I love Cinema Therapy. I love how they break down the psychological aspects of various movies, good and bad, and how they bring their expertise as a licensed therapist and professional filmmaker to discuss some of the best movies out there. I'm always excited to see what they have to say, and I was especially thrilled to see their latest video, ranking some of the best bromances in the MCU. I discovered them through their videos where they cried over the LotR bromances, so it sort of feels like coming full-circle ^_^

And of course I was pleased that Jono put Steve and Bucky's friendship at the top, because that's where they belong <3

The only thing that bugged me about what they had to say in this video was the implication that Steve and Bucky's friendship isn't entirely healthy. Obviously they can't get into all the little nuances of this relationship that spans several movies in their little five-minute spiel about it, and of course they're entitled to their own opinions, but their opinion is wrong I think they're misunderstanding a thing or two. And I wanna talk about it.

I agree whole-heartedly with everything they had to say, except for a couple things in this bit here (25:52-26:30).

Jono: "Tony is not willing to see Bucky. Once he learns it's the Winter Soldier, it's just the Winter Soldier. And Steve is the opposite, where he barely is acknowledging that the Winter Soldier is in there. He's like, 'This is Bucky. We're gonna get him out.' And Steve endangers people, including himself and his other friends, and also lets his friendships--with Tony, his friendship with Tony sours, because of his loyalty to Bucky. And he's been criticized for that, there are different ways he could have done that, that wouldn't have had the outcome that they had, and that's true. So maybe I shouldn't have put this at number 1, but for sheer love and loyalty..."

Alan: "This is hard to beat."

It's been almost seven years, and people are still watching Civil War and thinking the only reason Steve and Tony are fighting is because of Bucky. That the reason Steve's relationship with Tony soured is because he's blindly loyal to Bucky, that Steve should have done something differently.

Now, if you're just talking about the final fight in Siberia, I guess this holds a little more water. Tony doesn't see Bucky, a brainwashed victim; he sees the Winter Soldier, the murderer of his parents, and he's fighting to get revenge. Steve sees Bucky, his best friend, and is fighting to keep Tony from killing him.

But the implication in the video, particularly because of the clips used (which, granted, could be entirely chosen by the editor and not what the guys were thinking of when they were talking about it), is that the conflict of the entire movie hinges upon Steve and Tony's different views of Bucky. They seem to be saying that the only reason Steve and Tony are at odds is because Bucky is on the run from the law, and Tony wants to take him in while Steve refuses because his loyalty is to Bucky first.

That's a really common takeaway from the movie, but it's...so incomplete. Steve and Tony were already on opposing sides long before Bucky came on the scene. The conflict between them in this movie begins with the different positions they take concerning the Sokovia Accords. Even if Zemo hadn't done a single thing, they would eventually have found themselves on opposing sides of a fight, because Tony signed the Accords and Steve didn't. As soon as an Avengers-level threat cropped up, Steve wouldn't be able to just sit there twiddling his thumbs, especially if there was a delay while the committee decided what to do. Steve would be in the thick of things, trying to save people, and sooner or later he would run afoul of the Accords (because they're stupid and violate a whole slew of human rights, but that's a rant for another time), and then Tony would be forced to fight him, because he signed them.

(Aside: People seem to take Tony's line "Your judgment is askew" as indisputable fact. I wish they would do the same for Steve's line in the same scene: "You [tore the Avengers apart] when you signed.")

The bottom line is, though Steve and Tony's relationship was certainly damaged by how things went down in Siberia, which is centered around Bucky, they were always on very rocky footing and they were already at the point of shouting at each other over their disagreements about the Sokovia Accords. Their relationship does not sour just because of Steve's loyalty to Bucky. That would have happened with or without him in the mix.

And...can I just say? I've heard a lot of people criticize Steve for the way he handled things in CW, like he's the one bearing all or most of the blame for the Avengers falling apart. But what else was he supposed to do? Blindly sign the Accords even though it would have meant violating the rights of every enhanced individual on the planet? Just sit on his hands and watch while Bucky is shot on sight for a crime he never committed? Let Team Iron Man take him in and stop him from going after Zemo (who, to his knowledge at the time, was planning to wake up the other Winter Soldiers that no one else knew existed)? Steve could not in good conscience do any of those things.

The Cinema Therapy guys, and a lot of other people I've heard over the years, seem to think that Steve fighting friends and people who might otherwise be allies in order to save Bucky from being outright killed for crimes he was not guilty of...is a sign of an unhealthy friendship. That going after Bucky and insisting that his friend is still in there, that Bucky and the Winter Soldier are not one and the same, that he is going to try to get him back even if it means putting his own life on the line, when he has reason to believe it's possible and is proven right...is Steve being blind to reality.

Is it unhealthy to love someone so much you would die to save them? Is it unhealthy to believe that they can be saved even when everyone tells you it's impossible? Is it unhealthy to devote entire years of your life to finding your friend and making sure they're all right? Is it unhealthy to pick the friend who has been there for you your whole life, over the career/legacy/duty you've built up over the past several years (or over the "friend" who just tried to kill him)? Is it unhealthy to defy the whole world to defend your brother who has been cruelly victimized, and know that he would do the same for you if your positions were reversed?

If Steve and Bucky's friendship is unhealthy, I wish all of my friendships could be as unhealthy as theirs.

My life is complete. I've stumbled across a "Billy stans don't interact we don't support racist sympathizers" blog and it's a blog that openly stans slasher villains. This is why I try to tell fellow Billy fans to block haters without engaging. They are hating just for the sake of hating and don't want to hear reason 🙄

Ah but you see, stanning slasher villains is completely okay because they hate & kill everyone equally. But if you're guilty of rahcism (no matter how vague that is), you're bad evil wrong and should be canceled. Even if you're a fictional character and it makes no fucking difference in the real world. 😂

But yes, engaging with them is pointless. Blocking annoying people only takes a couple of clicks and you'll never have to see their posts again. Some of them haven't even watched the show lmao - they just hate Billy because everyone else said he's bad, and so they're already biased against him. 🤪

Ok so I am trying to ask this in the most respectful way because I don't wanna snowball this into a huge discourse; but I wonder if you've been seeing the Dark Content Discourse here on Tumblr?

It basically entails that despite your personal preferences, attacking/ demeaning other ppl who create/ consume dark content is a big no no because it's their safe space to be able to explore these topics. This includes all sort of stuff like i*cest, r*pe, g*re and even p*dophilia. Now you may not agree with any of these things, most ppl don't, and they might disgust you; which is totally fine. But there is a huge leap b/w something that is fictional and something that is real.

Fictional characters are literal lines on a paper. Doing anything with a fictional child does not mean you are harming a REAL child. This might still disgust you and that's fine too. You can block that person so you don't have to look at it again but to call everyone like this and start a campaign against them is well...

I just want you to know that I am not defending that person. I didn't even know them at all before this...Neither I am advocating for anything they are saying or confirming/claiming that they are good irl. I don't know them.

I just want you look at this from a different perspective and know your thoughts about this ordeal. Like for one moment step away from your pre-existing feelings and bias and look at this objectively. Everyone likes something that's even a lil problematic, so if we went on these campaigns every time, literally no one will be left in fandom. I don't agree with p*dophilia but I don't agree with this either...AGAIN THIS IS NOT MEANT TO CONDONE ANY OF THIS BEHAVIOUR! But to paint someone as a bad person for things they do in fiction in their safe space no matter how problematic, is somewhat disconcerting.

I again wanna say that this is not any hate against you or anyone else. I don't want to cause any discourse myself . I think you are an amazing writer and a valuable member in our fandom. Which is why it's important to me to hear your stance on this. But if you'd rather not answer this at all that's fine too! :>

I appreciate your perspective and I sometimes enjoy certain dark content as long as they warn others but pedophilia— fictional or not— should never be written/glorified/accepted. If it’s written as a horrible incident or traumatic backstory (like Lolita) then I understand why it’s written but glorifying or romanticizing it in any way is unacceptable.

If no one is left in the fandom after going on these “witch hunts” then the fandom is toxic, preditory, and unsafe.

As for the huge leap between fiction and reality, everything starts as a thought or fantasy. The more you think about it the more likely you are to commit or watch such an act.

Tumblr should under no circumstances be a safe place for pedophiles.

hi, i would like to make it very clear that i do not condone nor support in any way behavior of that nature, nor am i into that it. like all people, i have certain boundaries and topics that trigger me and this is certainly where i draw the line—which is anything that involves sexualizing minors, in any form or shape.

it is even more nauseating to me as someone who’s been a victim of sexual assault in the past, when still a minor. so, people coming to my inbox and calling me disgusting is really hurtful bc, trust me, i’ve called myself disgusting. a lot. i hate how insensitive people can be here, without having a single clue what the person behind the blog might have gone / be going through.

despite having a traumatic experience firsthand, i still choose to educate myself, even if it’s closely related to something that might be triggering for me.

my intent behind that reblog was 1) first of all, to bring awareness about an actual condition (POCD and how it does not equal p*dophilia) that was carefully explained in the said post and i have no intention of covering in my reply to this ask, you can all go ahead and read it or do your own research on it 2) to stress once again on the fact that it is fiction we’re talking about; i do understand how appalled everyone might be upon witnessing works / art that involve underage characters. i am too, like i said—i do not condone nor support it, i curate my experience and choose what to create and consume—but just bc you touch upon such a topic in a work or art IN GENERAL and not in the light of this discourse, does not make you a p*dophile, and it does not mean you seek it out in real life as a way to sexually get off of and no actual human being is harmed in the process of it. thoughts do not equal actions.

i do not know the person who is being accused in the callout post, i have no clue what their intention is behind their works. i am not aware of any of that and i do not defend nor support it regardless of their intention. but it rubs me the wrong way how the word p*dophile is thrown left and right so lightly solely bc someone interacts or creates or reads works of fiction regarding that IN GENERAL, once again, and not in the light of this discourse.

there are thousands of doujins with mature content out there that involve fictional characters and that doesn’t make the author a p*dophile. there are books that are centered around this topic and it does not make the author a p*dophile. there are movies about it that dooes not make any of the people involved in the process of bringing it to screen a p*dophile. just because you create something that revolves around a taboo topic does not mean you are sexually attracted to it, that you condone it, or that you actually mean to experience it in real life.

we as a fandom community, that indulges in content both as creators & consumers, put ourselves and characters in situations (speaking of DC) that would be greatly terrifying and traumatizing for us if they were to happen in real life. like noncon, yandere, incest and etc. and i do understand how these are abysmally different from when characters that are aged down are involved, bc children are sacred and they are to be kept safe and this is the tabooest of all taboos that should not be touched upon as it raises questions about your morals. i do get it, i understand why everyone is so shocked and appalled, i really do, trust me.

but i choose to have an open mind IN GENERAL, once again, stressing on the fact that this is not regarding the discourse or defending anyone. bc we always talk about and complain how people on this app can’t separate fiction from reality but sometimes we’re just such hypocrites, right? it shows. when the pill (DC) is harder for you to swallow you go and label someone as a freak. while this might be the only way for them to overcome their trauma, in a way at least —bc, once again, this might be a condition they didn’t willingly choose to have but developed overtime (and i am not talking about the person that is being accused in the callout post but in general) and you’re taking away their only way of battling their internal turmoil. and not just that. by being so harsh to someone who already hates themselves you can make it worse and incur suicidal thoughts in them, you know? and how does that make you feel?

so please just tag things properly and curate your experience. do not engage in content that makes you sick. block whoever makes you uncomfortable or whose posts and content aren’t your cup of tea. but don’t go around labeling people when you do not know what they’re going through or fighting against.
