20 questions for fic writers!
tagged by my loves @storybookprincess and @clood! ty for the tag friends!! <333
1. How many works do you have on ao3?
40!
2. What’s your total ao3 word count?
310,790
3. What fandoms do you write for?
A slapdash of whatever I'm most interested in atm! I kinda consider hxh fandom my home base, but I also have a number of Sandman, HQ, and Natsume Yuujinchou fics.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
gonna take a leaf out of both liv and claudia's books and skip this one! instead, here are my top 5 personal faves instead of kudos :D these are my most recent favorites haha:
streetlights in the dark blue: gomens, ineffable husbands, 6.9k. my s2 vent fic! about healing and giving crowley a loving community, dammit.
circus freak: hxh, hisoillu, 1.8k. murder husbands! proposals! it's all here folks.
blue roses: yuri on ice, gen, yakov & victor, 2.6k. all my love for victor nikiforov through the eyes of his grumpy coach.
a city of love scenario: hxh, killugon, 5k. I had SO much fun writing this one! set during the greed island arc my beloved. hisoka is there.
Let the River Rush In: hxh, leopika, 18k. my submission for the 2023 hxhbb this year! reunions, pining, you name it. also art museums!
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
yes!! sometimes it takes me a second, but I do respond to nearly every comment (unless it's spam).
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
definitely dusk, a sandman dreamling fic! MCD isn't usually my thing, but I really wanted to explore that in this fic.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
oooh hmm. "happy ending" is super vague to me ngl, but for most traditionally "and they lived happily ever after," I'll go with my soukoku royalty AU, thy kingdom come.
8. Do you get hate on fic?
oooh I've never gotten explicit hate! I've gotten unsolicited concrit and some more bizarre comments that I've ignored before though haha.
9. Do you write smut?
nope! I've written some more suggestive scenes in some of my fics (Let the River Rush In and circus freak, for example), but for the time being at least I'm not really interested in writing it.
10. Do you write crossovers?
Yes! The Promise of the World, which is a natsuyuu/howl's moving castle crossover, and Letters from Heaven, which is a HQ/Violet Evergarden crossover. Crossovers to me are really fun thought exercises; I like to see how certain events or characters can be interpreted in another canon.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
not that I'm aware of!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I've gotten a request to have one translated, but now that I think about it I never got a link to it! so who knoooows haha
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I can't believe I'm saying this, but no! I think I'd like to one day--it seems really fun :D
14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?
a cruel question! i can't choose one. well, a bit of a lie given by pfp haha, so I'll just say killugon ahdkdjf
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t?
oooh, i have a kawoshin fic that lives rent free in my drafts and in my mind. i started it maybe 7 years ago? it is, in theory, a semi-canon compliant multiverse fic that combines manga, anime, and reboot movies canon, all centered around kaworu my beloved and his relationship with shinji. maybe one day I'll pick it up again! (I still need to see the last movie...)
16. What are your writing strengths?
ooh! hmm, I'd probably say interiority? love me some good introspection. a lot of my more recent fics especially are just excuses to dive into my faves' heads while something else happens in the background
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
PLOT lmao. most of my plot-heavy fics are crossovers bc they're based on events that are already lined out for me! which gives me more room to explore how my charas act and interact in an established story. surprise, even my plottier fics are really just character studies in disguise >:3 still, I would like to improve on this one day! just need to think of,,,an idea ajsldkfj
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I've never done it before, but like with any kind of writing tool, I think it works if you do it right. no bella, where have you been, loca? pfffft
19. First fandom you wrote for?
the first fandom I've ever posted/written for was Free! Iwatobi Swim Club! what a time ahhhsjdflks
20. Favourite fic you’ve written?
my favorite fic is almost always the latest thing I've posted LOL, so rn it's streetlights in the dark blue! lovelovelove anthony j. crowley with all my heart <333
this was so fun!! no pressure tagging uhhhh @perexcri @aboxthecolourofheartache @dodici12 @applepi00 @macavitykitsune @feralrookie @silverinerivers @runawaymarbles @three--rings @that-banhus and literally anyone who reads this and wants to do it!

For the anime ask: 4, 12, 15, and 24! 💜💜💜💜
(From this ask HERE)
Thanks friend! I'm so excited to answer these!!! There are a few minor spoilers so be wary. Also, these are just my opinion and this is all for fun!
Let's start!
4. Least favourite anime character
I'm sure I could pick some horrible villain like Shou Tucker, but that's obvious. No, my least favourite anime character is Sasuke Uchida from Naruto. There are many reasons, but to sum them up I dislike Sasuke because I feel the cast immediately forgives his terrible actions and attitudes. It doesn't feel organic and instead it feels like they're clinging to an "ideal" of Sasuke without seeing who he really is. Just feels like Sasuke got a free pass to be a terrible person with little to no consequences. (Though I should note this is just from my memories of Shippuden which I haven't read in years. I'm also not watching Boruto.)
Also, Sakura could have done so much better.
12. Anime that should get more attention from others
To Your Eternity. Please, I'm begging everyone: watch this anime. The story's central questions of: What is the meaning of life to an immortal being? Can an immortal being ever understand humanity and what makes us human? What makes up our humanity? are fantastically explored. It's a character driven anime, but the plot and richness that comes from the characters is breathtaking. The emotional weight of the story also makes this anime a "I will cry watching this" series, but when it comes from the same director as A Silent Voice, what else would you expect?
Just... please I need someone else to to SCREAM WITH ME at all the plot twists and excitement over S3.
15. Anime you never get sick of watching
There are a few, so let's get to it.
-Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood: FMA is my favourite shonen anime/manga series of all time. The story, the characters, the plot, the action: it's all perfect in my eyes. While I know Brotherhood can feel a little rushed at the beginning (because they felt they were re-hashing elements from the 2003 version), I promise once the manga bits hit, the series goes full force and never, ever misses a step.
-Cardcaptor Sakura: I know the original anime stretches out the number of cards to 52, thus making it follow a "monster of the week" formula for a bit, but I don't care. There is something so pure and sweet about this series, as if CLAMP really bottled and captured childhood joy, imagination, and delight all into a bottle. There is just the right amount of action and tension to add danger, but doesn't cross the line of whimsical magic and wonder.
-Fruits Basket (2019): I know the reboot has only been out for a few years, but if FMA is my favourite shonen series, Fruits Basket is my favourite shoujo series of all time. The manga was there for me at the perfect stage of my life and I'll never ever not be grateful to it. The plot, the characters, the emotional journey: all of it breaks my heart but also mends it.
-Yu Yu Hakusho (S2): Okay, finally we're at the series with a few stipulations. While I don't dislike S1, S3, or S4, nothing will ever top the Dark Tournament arc. It's perfection and despite the 90s animation style, I think it only adds character and depth to the series, which makes me enjoy it all the more.
24. Popular character you hate
Hate is a bit of a strong word here but a popular character I'm not really into is Makima from Chainsaw Man.
I didn't trust her from day one and I have no attachment to her what so ever. Now, her character concept is fantastic, amazing, and interesting. On paper and executed? Yeah, just never got into her as a character. I couldn't get into her when the series tried to play her as "mysterious with dubious morals, don't 100% trust her" or as "The veil has been 100% lifted and you know her entire motivations and powers".

different anon here lol. enough people who like billy/find him interesting ignore this aspect of his character so i feel like i have to ask. are you someone who recognizes that billy's actions towards lucas in s2 stemmed from racism? i feel like it was pretty obvious subtext but a lot of non-billy haters ignore that and it makes me uncomfortable so i just wanted to check.
yes, i think we are supposed to read billy as racist. that was my read on him when i first watched s2, with no exposure to fandom. i much prefer the fanon billy to what i see on screen.
i think the fundamental problem with billy (as relates to fandom) is this: it seems to me like the duffers were just like ‘wouldnt it be fun if we just put all the 80s bully cliches into one guy?’ so in s2, hes a) a straight-up racist AND b) intensely self-hating homoerotic AND c) he’s lashing out because his home life is abusive. and i think the problem is exacerbated because even though those first two points are fairly obvious imo, they are entirely subtextual.
this leads to a situation where people who deeply related to or empathized with points b & c (and maybe missed a) get online and express that and get called horrible racists. some of them, in turn, erase that part of billy’s canon because it’s uncomfortable and doesn’t fit into the character in their hearts, which is, ironically, racist.
however, i think it’s worth taking into account that this is a show that essentially soft-reboots every character every season. because of the unstable nature of billy’s characterization in the canon, i think it’s perfectly legitimate for a fan to take what resonates and leave what doesn’t. i’ve seen some beautiful interpretations of billy in fanon. i really root for that guy. i don’t really see him on my screen, but i like seeing what people do with him on my dash.
i appreciate that you came to me with the benefit of the doubt. i hope this answer is satisfactory. billy is not My Guy, but i have billy mutuals, and i’ll continue to post billy stuff whenever i like the stuff. if it makes you feel better, you can rest assured that i understand the guy in the show is racist, and the guy i’m reblogging is a more of a hive mind fantasy of a different guy in the same skin. my favourite piece of billy fanart is him on the beach with max, sun tanning comfortably in a speedo. i like that guy. he does not exist in canon.
also, for any of my followers reading this, i’m not really anti-anyone. i think anyone can take any character and play with them like a barbie inside their minds. i don’t see the harm. if that makes you uncomfortable, feel free to unfollow now.

Not sure how I feel about the comics skipping S2... I mean, I think Darkar deserved a bit more spotlight. He's one of my favourite villains; his design is metal as fuck, and he was responsible for Dark Bloom, everybody's favourite source of angst headcanons. But then again, his backstory is somewhat confusing and I question why a Satan-equivalent was the villain of just S2. Wouldn't he have been a more logical final boss than Valtor or the Ancestrals? They were obeying him during the genocide!
That's what I mean when I say the comics are good, but can't stand their own without the show. Too much relevant stuff happens off-screen. They already skipped most of s1, but with that season they did it by occasionally referencing something as having happened already and otherwise leaving you to guess when an issue was supposed to take place. On the rare occasion that they did show their own version of it it was typically a downgrade
It is a bummer not to see more of Darkar, but just skipping to the end of s2 helps avoid a lot of confusion. And honestly s2 wasted a lot of time, while there's a lot I love about the story and its potential, it was in execution basic enough that you don't lose much by just doing a quick recap. Its strength was mostly in its filler episodes, and since the comics are basically all filler episodes they're better off sticking to their own than copying the ones from the show
Anyway, Darkar!
I totally see where you're coming from in thinking he made more sense as the final boss, and I agree that he should be (or have been but I'm always thinking of reboot potential) portrayed as the biggest threat of them all. The thing is that I don't necessarily think going with a more powerful villain every season is the best model for tv shows, and imo there's a lot of reasons Darkar and Valtor work best as the villains for their respective seasons both as the cartoon is now, and in how it could be in reboots
For one thing, I think most of the fandom agrees on Dark!Bloom trauma as something we'd like to see in a reboot. If Darkar was the last villain there would be no time to explore that trauma at all because the show would be over right after it happens. In theory s3 would be the best place to cover all of that as its own plot plays out. After all there's a lot of story beats that could easily be turned into introspective moments*
I also just consider Valtor himself to be the ideal final villain. He's nowhere near as intimidating as Darkar(who scared the SHIT out of me when I was little), but he feels very different from all the villains before him. In the past every villain has had this goal of obtaining the Dragon's Flame: The Ancestrals pre-canon, the Trix in s1, and Darkar in s2. With Valtor that goes out the window because he already has that power to begin with. It makes it so that his goal feels more original, even if it still comes down to world domination in the end. His interest in Bloom comes not from a desire to take her power, but from the connection they share. It's still classic Winx but a departure from what's become the formula at that point. It's a nice way to shake things up that only works if you already have that pattern there to break. Which means you need to put the villains going after the Flame first
Finally, even though Darkar was the guy commanding the Ancestrals during the genocide, Valtor had a much more personal hand in it. In the cartoon as it is he's Bloom's closest connection to her birht parents, and as a result a lot of the season is basically build-up to her reuniting with them(which is part of why, despite it feeling like final season in many ways, the finale itself feels very unrewarding). I tend to favor versions of the story where Bloom's birth parents don't get brought back at all, but in that situation his history with them could help set up a character arc where she finally makes peace with it. If you make it so that he actually is the one that killed them, then you can have the bonus element of her getting justice for them as well
Really, the main thing I would change about Darkar/s2(outside of exploring the lasting effects more) would just be making it so that they never truly defeat him? The final battle takes place in this pocket-dimension no? Just have Bloom land a crazy powerful surprise attack on him once she breaks free from his control, maybe have someone use that moment of confusion to toss one part of the codex into the abyss for him to chase after while they all rush out of the portal and seal him inside. The threat is still neutralized, but he's still framed as a powerful enough enemy that the Winx couldn't actually beat him in a straight up battle. That way Valtor feels like a bigger threat than he did originally because the Winx haven't already defeated someone that's a much bigger deal than him
*To name a few options: Bloom going back to Earth could be about her parents helping her start to work through what happened to her. Their journey to Lynphea always felt like the perfect callback to s1 Bloom's innocent love of the magical world, and could represent a point in the story where she starts to feel that joy again. Bloom's entire Enchantix arc already has a lot of her self-destructive behavior+her being alone with her thoughts that you could easily combine with her angsting over s2. And so much more! There's enough there for a separate post tbh

Christopher Pike for the headcannon ask please!
Ah, my favourite Space Hufflepuff! (You lot are entirely asking me about my favourites and it’s great ;)
For the character ask meme.
Sexuality Headcanon: Bi, bi, bi Gender Headcanon: Cis male A ship I have with said character: Burnham/Pike. I love them both...the shipping just happened; I do like competent character pairings. A BROTP I have with said character: It’s between Pike & Spock and Pike & Number One. For the few scenes they had together, s2 did such a good job of showing the depth of history and trust between them all and I’m into it. Though I’ve recently found myself thinking that we were robbed of Pike & Culber interaction in that season... A NOTP I have with said character: Pike/Vina. Nothing against other people shipping it, but I find the dynamic troubling at best. Everything about how they meet is pretty horrific in terms of agency. Unfortunately, that makes his canon ending... less than satisfactory for me. A random headcanon: I love that Pike is canonically absolutely enamoured with horses. What would be even funnier, though, if the whole thing started because he was trolling Number One or Spock (large Earth equines? Oh yeah, love them. See, isn’t this a great bonding experience?) and they were so adorably dubious that it snowballed from there until he was in too deep. Even odds for Number One/Spock seeing through him immediately and just waiting to see how far he’ll take it, or finding out years later and absolutely murdering him. General Opinion over said character: I love what they did with his ‘reboot’ in Discovery. Yes, having another white dude in charge during s2 wasn’t progress, but if we are having white dudes, let them be white dudes like him, eschewing toxic masculinity. Thoughtful, kind, good leaders without being harsh/mean/aloof to achieve that, respectful of his crewmembers.

Ninjago Unpopular Opinions
Following on from my watch of the entire old series (combined with already having seen the last two series), I have enough material to work with to make a sort of unpopular opinion list. Some of these are lightweight, some of these are...uh, not so much.
These aren’t in any particular order, this is more of a “I’ll just put them down as I remember them” sort of deal. That’ll be why they appear so messy.
-Even after all this I prefer the newest seasons to the older stuff. There have been a surprising number of good to great older seasons, but I just love that hit of S1/S2 campiness with the more developed writing of later seasons.
-Cole sucked as a leader, aside from in the pilot episodes. In the series proper he varied from complete meathead I hated (first part of S1), to having the same mentoring personality as everyone else (S1 - S2), to being consumed by the love triangle which made him pull a really shitty move (I don’t need to tell you what that refers to). He eventually gets ironed out in season 4, but Lloyd had already taken over as leader at this point. And rightfully so, even if Lloyd’s material got knocked from season 3 as a result.
-I couldn’t really warm up to Ronin that much for some reason. I get the reason why he’s popular, since it was pretty obvious he was supposed to be like an off-beat mentor figure to Nya, but...I dunno, unlike with Dareth, it felt like his skeevy moments were more off-kilter, plus I didn’t really like his arc in Skybound (even if that was written out of reality). That being said, his was strong in Possession even with said moments. Maybe I just need a future appearance to see how I ultimately swing with him.
-I mentioned this in my Hunted overview, but I think Skylor’s just bland. Part of the problem is that she’s mainly just wedged in as an action girl and doesn’t have too many moments to interact outside of that. That’s mostly reserved for moments where she acts as Agony Aunt (which is fine, that shows that being supportive is in her nature), but she needs more to work with. And as an obvious offshoot, if Kailor is the intended endgame it sucks in its current form. They don’t have chemistry or a decent dynamic.
-The other Ninjago ship I don’t particularly like out of all of them is...actually Geode. Yeah, Rebooted obviously wasn’t good for it considering the love triangle, but what actually did more damage to it for me was Skybound. It went so far in trying to oversteer back that it beat you over the head with the fact they were making Cole and Jay best friends after said love triangle (made really obvious when Jay is worried about Cole’s reaction to him seeing Nya in his reflection in both Possession and Skybound, when Cole isn’t even phased when he’s told). It was just really off-putting.
-Jay is a better big brother figure to Lloyd than Kai. Yeah, Kai’s true potential moment in Rise of the Serpentine hinged on realising he (and the others, mind) were supposed to protect Lloyd, they all spent Legacy of the Green Ninja’s first half being Lloyd’s proper mentors, Zane’s death prompted Kai to hover with thoughts of the Green Ninja again (which seemed to me for different reasons to being envious of power at the start, although its handling was very clunky after that), and he had the first episode in Possession which was arguably the strongest showing of a dynamic with Lloyd, but Possession didn’t have much about it outside of said episode, and the show seemed to just forget it from that point beyond some very, very fleeting and sparse bits. In the more modern seasons, it feels like Jay’s stepped up to be more supportive of Lloyd on a more consistent basis (which would make sense with the common fanon that Jay is the youngest of the original Ninja, he’d be closer to Lloyd’s age). It’s something I kind of want tapped into in a proper way at some point.
-Sensei Garmadon is a bit overrated. Just a smidge. When he’s good, he’s good, but most of the time he’s no more interesting than Wu would be in the same position. And I feel like they didn’t really develop his fatherly bond with Lloyd too well despite that being what his character was there for. Again, aside from moments where he was really good.
-Most underrated season of the old batch for me was the last minute shock, March of the Oni. I did enjoy Day of the Departed (which has a worse reputation), but I can understand why someone wouldn’t like it considering how bare it was. March of the Oni is far from my favourite season but I thought it came together really well, so the fact it’s generally panned legitimately confuses me. I guess Hands of Time would be a contender too, but I think opinion on that has swayed in its favour after the new seasons came out (and Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjutsu would be here if I included the new batch) so that’s why it’s edged out.
-Most overrated season for me was undeniably Tournament of Elements. It’s not my least favourite season, but Rebooted and Hunted are pretty maligned to begin with, while Tournament of Elements is usually considered one of the top ones. It starts strong, has an interesting premise and there are ideas that are executed well. The thing is that the elements that people tend to praise the season for are ones I actually think the writers dropped the ball on, hence why this ended up the toughest season to get to the end of, even more than Hunted. It’s a shame, but it’s just not for me.
-Best ninja suits...honestly, I don’t really notice the suits unless they’re really bad, because I’m used to franchises where costume changes mark radical permanent redesigns, and are not just par for the course of the brand (it makes perfect sense with a toy brand who want to sell you the same characters over and over again but still). Not counting the S11 suits since they weren’t part of the old batch, I guess I’d honestly say the ZX suits, maybe? They’re simple, but they’re cute and very distinct. Also Sons of Garmadon Cole channelling the Movie costume was a very good move (and arguably looks even better ripped up in Hunted aethetically), and Kai’s suit was bleh in Sons of Garmadon but its overhaul in Hunted was way better. Also, just as a wildcard, Rebooted Lloyd looks like a more finely tuned ZX suit. Actually, just one last bit on a tangent to note a difference the show makes to the figures that demonstrates the figures’ limitations. For Kai and Jay’s S11 suits, their figures invoke similar feels (because underneath the accessories they do have a lot in common), whereas they feel very different in the show because while Jay sticks to the figure and looks snug, Kai has a lot exposed around the neckline, as if his gi is hanging loosely on the shoulders and should join Cole in the “For fucks sake it’s an ice realm wear a jacket please” club.
-Worst ninja sui--what the hell happened to Cole and Nya in Hands of Time?! Nya’s main issue is that it’s trying to work too many colours and they just don’t mesh well. I think this was the time they were partially adapting the movie’s change, but they were clinging onto her having red to both represent Samurai X and her ties to her brother, but they should have just picked one or the other because it just doesn’t work the way it did in Skybound. And Cole’s outfit is just hideous. Its balance of colours and accents is all off-kilter, and to top it off the shoes just don’t work and somehow look like socks with sandals. I didn’t know that was doable with a whole suit. Finally, on a general note, I’m not a fan of when the suits are all very similar bar some very, very minor differences. One could argue that it makes them look more like a team, but I prefer the individual personality to come out.
-It’s hard to judge the best and worst episodes, honestly. The seasons from Tournament of Elements onwards are done so tied to each other that picking an episode is rather difficult outside of designated finales (or the odd Jay-focused/Zane-focused episodes that happened in seasons 7, 8 and 9). I guess for best I’d say stuff like The Quiet One, or The Fall, or Grave Danger, or stuff like that would be up there. Worst episodes in those seasons are even harder, because usually it’s how arcs over episodes are written that get to me, not individual episodes.  This all being said, it’s much easier to do this with the more episodic first three seasons, and to that end I would still say that Tick Tock is my favourite standalone episode still, and Home is still my least favourite. For all the times the writing has dropped the ball, nothing has legitimately pissed me off more than what this episode did because it’s in its own category of bad writing.
-There have been some concepts thrown in that, while they definitely wouldn’t work out in the long term, make for interesting snippets of what-ifs. Like, I loved the bit where Jay was a show host and got around the stage using his lightning powers. That seems like such a natural fit outside of his ninja identity I wish I’d thought of it. Imagine Bradley Walsh using lightning to get around the studio, that would be metal as fuck.
-On the other side of that coin, the bizarro Ninja are the single most overrated concept in the show. I don’t like Scourge the Hedgehog to begin with, but he at least had some efforts to make him unique (that fell flat, but eh). The bizarro Ninja are the equivalent of Evil Sonic; cliche and undeveloped. They’re not even useful for the cliche idea of framing the actual Ninja since even though they’re seen doing delinquent behaviour, this is never addressed. Heck Nadakhan was more effective with this idea. Thing is that I can’t blame the show at all for this. While the concept is naff, the show itself treats them as they actually were; Garmadon’s puppets and the scheme of the episode. Aside from bizarro Jay’s behaviour to Nya being full of unfortunate implications, there is no greater purpose for their existence, and the show never tries to do it again. It’s really the fans that have inflated their appearance in this case because I guess the idea of “take this nice character and give them an evil version” is just so appealing to the teenage demographic. Screw that, corruption is way more fun and interesting.
-What I can blame the show for is the single worst execution of an idea, because to this point I still consider Kai’s green ninja “arc” in Tournament of Elements to be the single worst executed arc (yeah, even worse than the love triangle, but that one is still bad). The sad thing is it managed to convince me that it wasn’t such a bad concept when they explained it by being an offshoot of his depression following Zane’s death (before that I was very sceptical it could fit it in naturally after the last three seasons). But then it was used once when Skylor tried to get Kai to stab Lloyd in the back during the skating match (which Kai completely rebuffed and seemed over his depression-rooted negative vibes on Lloyd), and once more when he was overcome by the power of the staff. The latter is especially infuriating since this would have been the perfect opportunity for a character moment. Like, Lloyd and/or Skylor could have fought to get Kai out of the trance of the staff and see that his friends mean more to him than having power. It practically writes itself and is a perfect set-up. What happens instead is that Cole is technically the one to save Kai from himself as he rams the Roto Jet into the chamber and makes the rocky serpentine structure come crashing down on Kai. Maybe interesting to read into if you want a Lava reading of the show, but in that moment is just a wasted opportunity. Come on!
-Actually, also talking about other bad concepts, I don’t miss those weird energy dragons they could summon starting from Tournament of Elements. The dragons in Rise of the Serpentine/Legacy of the Green Ninja were fine because they had a logical reason for being there and actually were integrated into the plot (so you got to watch them being maintained and having moments with the ninja). The energy dragons in Tournament of Elements existed for one character as a plot thing (Zane’s, because he always had the good plots in the earlier seasons), but then everyone else suddenly could do it too and they became convenient plot devices and nothing else. Airjutsu I was more okay with because it seems more like a tool they’d use and could be integrated better, but I can also see why that stopped being used (outside of that one bit in Prime Empire).
-The Elemental Masters are both over-hyped and underdeveloped. The normal civilian cast really got the shaft once the series decided it wanted to explore this lore, yet the only ones I really got interested in in any way were the villain EMs and Karlof. And even Karlof is overlooked by the fandom, by the looks of it.
-Jay actually came off the best in the Rebooted love triangle. He’s not entirely perfect, but he is essentially the biggest victim as a result of it in that season, and what Nya and Cole did either bordered on or was outright callous for different reasons. I think if people gave Jay the biggest shtick for Rebooted’s events, it’s influenced with how Skybound botched trying to patch it up.
-The movie was a net positive influence on the show. Aside from me preferring the designs of the movie anyway, it forced the characterisation to actually pick a lane for each character and stick to it, mitigating a lot of the haphazard characterisation issues. The inconsistency in later seasons is tone instead, which is maybe why people thought the characterisation was inconsistent between Sons of Garmadon/Hunted and March of the Oni/SotFS (when really, they weren’t that different if at all). The show also made a good call in ignoring movie Zane’s characterisation; as much as I enjoy it in the film, it really didn’t gel up with what the show had done with him, so trying to force it in would have been more of a characterisation jolt than any of the early season stuff.
-I’m generally fine with Jaya and Pixane. The former I can see why people would be off about it because there have been some badly written periods for them, but I think on the whole it manages to hold it together. The latter was written in surprisingly smoothly given the circumstances, so it’s no wonder I don’t see discourse about it.
-Oh yeah, I don’t get Wu/Faith as a ship. Like, she was the cool drill instructor/aunt to everyone, including Wu. This is a quick one because it’s just a very small aside.
-Also I can’t really get behind Polyninja either. If the characters had a fairly even spread of interaction and moments between each other I could, but the spread ends up like lots of moments between Cole and Kai varying from little moments to huge dollops, and Cole and Jay having a whole best friends affirmation arc due to the fallout of the love triangle, to Kai and Jay having barely anything to work with and anyone with Zane getting a couple of table scraps occasionally. It’s not even enough.
-Following on from that though, Zane feels the least integrated with the group dynamic in general. He’s has some of the best plots and stories in the show, but nearly all of them have been focusing on him solo. And not even SotFS or Prime Empire helped with this one. Hopefully MoM can smooth this one out a bit.
-Finally for this post, after going through all those seasons I still prefer Nya’s movie voice to her show voice by a significant margin. Sorry Kelly Metzger.
I think that’s it. I’ve actually been on this for a week but I’ve been allowing time for more thoughts to come to me, because there have been a lot of thoughts coming in batches. I think I’ll leave it at this though, because I think most of it is covered pretty well.
I have at least two more text posts like this planned, but they’re not strictly about the old seasons so I’ve left them for after. I’m looking forward to them though, because they’re on specific topics and that is my bread and butter pudding.

2019 in animation - very selected summary
So, I dunno if anyone’s noticed, but this year was crazy strong when it comes to animation, both in terms of amount and quality of it. No matter what type you liked - traditional...
Tumblr media
...3D...
Tumblr media
...cell-shaded...
Tumblr media
...hyper-realistic...
Tumblr media
 - oh, wait, wait, no, my mistake, that’s clearly live-action.
Anyway, no matter what type of animation is your favourite, this year gave you something. and I’m gonna go chronologically, listing those that I have been able to see. Keep in mind, day only has 24 hours, so I couldn’t see every new season or premiere (for example, I had no interest in OK KO, or She-Ra). Some spoilers below. And Gifs. LOTS OF gifs.
In January: we were still riding on the Spiderverse bandwagon from last year,, which culminated with an Oscar in February. And though as I’ve said, the movie would have worked better imho as a, say, Netflix series, as only two of the spider-people were properly fleshed out, I have to admit, it was a well-earned prize.
Then we were hit by the finale of Steven Universe, and while some complained about the another redemption of cosmic regime, it was an incredibly satisfying ending to a great cartoon... so much so that a whole movie and an epilogue series was made.
plus, it had a segment animated by James Baxter, so it’s automatic win..
Tumblr media
January also blessed us with a reboot of another old-forgotten property, Carmen Sandiego, with her second season arriving in October. And it proved that reboots do make sense, but only if you actually do something with it. The story was fresh, creative, and yet, similar in its serialised form to capture the imagination of viewers. Also, grappling hooks for the win.
Tumblr media
February was the month of dragons. Not only we got the conclusion of How to Train Your Dragon franchise, but Netlfix gave us second season of The Dragon Prince. While I still consider HTTYD 1 as the best movie of the franchise, as it cleverly told the story of a conflict without any obvious villain, HTTYD 3 was a satisfying conclusion, strengthened by the Homecoming special in November.
TDP S2 on the other hand, did everything season 1 did, except better. For once, the studio finally broke their piggy bank and bought a new graphics card, so the choppy 15FPS animation of S1 is gone. The story got darker, more mature, yet whimsical, and it only made us hungry for more. Luckily, S3 was just around the corner.
Tumblr media
March gave us season 2 of Craig of the Creek. I have to admit, I missed out on this cartoon in 2018, and it was a humongous mistake. CotC is quite possibly the most wholesome cartoon out there, telling amazing story about a boy, his friends, and his family, glorifying the mundane adventures in the creek to truly epic proportions. The family is especially important part, I do not remember a cartoon where bonds between family members were as well written as here. Definitely a must-watch if you have missed it as well.
Tumblr media
On 8th of March, the International Women’s day, DC Superhero Girls 2019, aka My Little Pony But Humans And With Superpowers, started, and it was a blast. Creator. Lauren Faust, has once again proven that whatever she touches turns into gold. The shorts were funny, clever, and changed just enough of the DC universe to feel familiar, yet show us new, interesting scenarios.
Tumblr media
In April, Missing Link had its premiere, showing that traditional, stop motion animation not only has place in modern times, but it can deliver spectacular scenes, though of course, we expected nothing less of studio Laika.
Tumblr media
In May, one of Disney’s long-running series, Star vs The Forces of Evil had its finale, and that brings us to the first screech of the list. Many people complained about the direction the show has taken, some claiming it has gone off-track in S3, some saying it was S4 that dropped the quality. Some, like me, saw nothing wrong with it, but the finale let people dissatisfied. If anything, it was too short, and definitely could use an epilogue movie that would tie some of the remaining plot threads in something bigger than one single pan-shot.
Rest in piece, laser puppies
Tumblr media
Wait, they’re alive? Well, then... rest in piece, Hekapoo and her puppies.
Tumblr media
This month also presented a first contender for this Summer’s line-up, Twelve Forever. The cartoon took us into wild, bizarre land of imagination, and offered quite a few very mature lessons about growing up and acknowledging one’s responsibilities. It also provided much needed representation, both in terms of colour and sexuality.
Sadly, amidst scandals with its creator, the show was canned, though it’s also Netflix’s fault for not marketing it enough.
A-and maybe the show was just a tad too... creepy....
Tumblr media
Also somewhere in May some Games might have been lost and some Thrones burned, but no one cares about it anymore. i think it was popular for a while, though.
However, 12 Forever was just a start. June gave us Amphibia, my personal top-bingeable cartoon of the year. Disney has hit a jackpot, giving us an incredibly creative fantasy show with rich mythology and enough emotional conflict to create fantastic storytelling. The only slight complain was the scheduling, as episodes aired daily, meaning the season was over by the end of the month. But honestly, the amount of humour and adventures with Anne in the forg world we got compensates that thousandfold. Book 2, coming in 2020, can only makes thing more interesting.
Tumblr media
Going for a hat-trick, in August we got the premiere of a cartoon that I was betting would be my personal favourite, Infinity Train... Until I learned of its schedule, even weirder than Amphibia’s. While Amphibia took a right turn, and gave us 20 episodes, a perfect amount for both plot and filler stories, Infinity Train... turned out to be a mini-series with just ten episodes, airing daily, two per night. And that, in my opinion, was a fatal mistake. Not only we now know that the story is not over, as Season 2 arrives in January, but the short episodes and its density gave very little time to leave an impact on us. If it was at least spaced out, then maybe I wouldn’t be so judgemental, but for me it was a blow that deflated the balloon I was clinging to since 2016 pilot. Still, there is more to come, and the story was more than interesting, so we’ll see if I get used to the pocket mini-story arcs.
Tumblr media
September. Remember Steven Universe? That cartoon that ended? SIKE, HAVE A TV MOVIE. And by gods, old and new, what a phenomenal movie it was. A musical telling its own, contained story of betrayal, trust and finding yourself, based on Rebecca Sugar’s mis-adventure with a phone that reset itself... I have seen this movie at least ten times, and its OST is one I come back to constantly on Spotify. The songs are amazing, catchy, incredibly-well written, deep, and, as usual, send very adult messages about growing up and finding one’s identity, which SU was already famous for. Must watch.
Tumblr media
Continuing the theme of reboots that actually make sense, Ducktales finished its second season after duck-bombs in March and May, with a heart-breaking story of Della Duck and humongous finale, extending DT’s universe to other Disney Afternoon shows. Season 3 promises even more, and DT is a golden standard of making a reboot that stays faithful to a more than half-a-century old material, while adding enough material to keep things fresh and funny for modern audience. What I’m saying is, Disney could really learn from Disney (pictured below).
Tumblr media
But while some things start, some have to finish. October saw the end of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, a show that has taken Internet by the storm in 2010 and...
Tumblr media
...okay, cringy brony things aside, this was a clever re-imagining of the decades-old property, and its popularity, especially amongst the people outside the target demography is a proof of its quality. The ending was perfectly serviceable, nothing that stood out, in my opinion, but it definitely didn’t disappoint either. MLP FiM will live in history as the cartoon about pastel tiny horses that made adult men cry and gave them enough passion to create years of of visual crack. And porn. Lots of porn.
Tumblr media
November:  Just In case if one season of human and elf adventures was enough, The Dragon Prince Season 3 arrived in November, and it provided a thrilling conclusion to its first smaller story arc. Though I wish the season was longer, and it dived into the history of Elves’ and Humans’ animosities, I would be lying if I said I didn’t binge-watch it all in one sitting, gripping my chair.
Tumblr media
Do you like Green Eggs and Ham? Yes, yes, I do, Sam-I-am. Question: how do you take a classic poem, made purposefully of limited vocabulary, and turn it into a thirteen episode series with a beginning, middle, and end? The answer: You add bunch of weird stuff and the mother of all complicated backstories... at least by the original’s standards. And here’s the thing: this is the first Dr Seuss’ adaption where it works. Somehow the writers were able to stretch each verse of the famous poem into a surprisingly emotional story about friendship, losing and restoring hope, as well as following your dreams. Plus, it gave us Fargo-esque team of Bad Guys. Come on.
Tumblr media
And just in time for Christmas season, we were blessed with Klaus, a clear contender for a Christmas classic in my opinion. This STUNNINGLY beautiful traditionally animated original Netflix movie is a very, very clever reinterpretation of St. Nick’s mythos, telling a deep, and very realistic story of greed and selfishness, and how can one turn their life around by changing their life, one present at a time.
Tumblr media
We’re about to end the year, so HOW ABOUT SOME EMOTIONAL TRAUMA, KIDS? Yes, Steven Universe Future is here, and from the looks of it, Steven’s problems are just beginning, since they mature with him. The show’s too real, man. However, it also provided much needed levity, giving us a familiar taste. Nothing more to say, as the show is still airing, and it will surely give us more emotional moments.
Tumblr media
And that’s a wrap for 2019. As I’ve said, it is not exhaustive by any means, and from the looks of it, 2020 is gonna be as packed as its prequel. So yeah, the world might be on fire, but at least we got some nice cartoon to binge-watch.
Happy new year everyone! At least I have time until 6th of January when the first episode of Infinity Train Season two arriWHAT DO YOU MEAN IT’S OUT ALREADY

Why is jason your favourite character in TGP? I love Michael, his sense of humour is so good and relateable. The way he disses humans is so true. Im on s2 and i find it weird how in s1 it took eleanor a bit of time to start to become a better person but in s2 after shes been rebooted she seems like she finds it easy and is good pretty much straight away. Its like they emphasised what a shitty person she was in s1 but dont do that again in s2 after shes rebooted. Eleanor is my least fave.

Eleanor is my least fave. I find it a bit annoying how she always is the one to come up with a solution to things, it makes it seem that shes smarter than the rest of them.”
Jason is my favourite character for all the reasons I listed when – I’m assuming it’s you — asked me if Jason gets development in season 2. I love his humour, there are a couple of jokes that make me roll my eyes but for the most part, I think they’re stupid-smart or shit you’d say if you were high
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
or they’re just so genuinely naive or dumb in a way that would absolutely be frustrating to deal with on a day-to-day basis but because of how sincere they are it’s also charming.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Manny can straddle that line unbelievably well where I’m simultaneously like “Jason Mendoza is a treasure” and “Jason, honey, no” and I find his comedic timing excellent. Like I CACKLED at this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The way the other characters react to him also help because it’s relatable
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
so it makes the joke funnier.
I also love how emotionally honest he is.
Tumblr media
I love that he is a guy who literally gets along with demons because they’re obnoxious bros but at the same time is sensitive to other people’s feelings and is also very upfront and comfortable with his own
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I very rarely wholeheartedly agree with the #pure tags on tumblr but when it comes to Jason, I’m like it’s true though because look at him!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I just find him to be an entirely lovable character.
For the rest of it, I’m not as interested in Eleanor as I am in Jason, Chidi and Tahani because I generally don’t love protagonists as my favourite character (I’m the same way with Harry in HP or Buffy in BTVS) and I appreciated the writing for Eleanor the most in season 1 because there was well-written development there but I understand why they can’t continuously do season 1 in the next few seasons because they want to do other things, to be frank she has a lot of lines and attitudes that I relate to and I think Kristen Bell is a solid actress but there’s always been something about her acting that’s seemed inaccessible to me or removed that I just don’t fully take to any of the characters I’ve seen her play even if I respect them as characters.
I think Michael is absolutely necessary to the fabric of the show and yet he’s the character I remember the least. I don’t find him memorable, I just know he has to be there for the show to work and I wouldn’t want him gone and yet I’m always like, oh right you’re there.

I was tagged by @vildeliens thank you Queen (of clowns and headcanoons) ❤️
Pick 5 shows, then answer the following questions, don’t cheat. Tag 10 (or however many) people.
Oz
Skam France
The Walking Dead
Doctor Who
Torchwood
1. Who is your favourite character in 2? Well that one is easy as hell. Lucas Lallemant, without the shadow of a doubt. I just adore that boy... I really do believe that he’s the most developed character of the whole skam universe. Also, i relate to him so so much, being parisian and 17 and queer and just, globally similar. And that Acting (TM) sure helps (will i ever be over axel’s acting? I dont think so)... I am gonna stop before i write essays (you all think this is a joke but i actually write random stuff about Lucas when i get bored in class, thats how bad it is). I just really love this boy folks...
2. Who is your least favourite character in 1? Well that’s an easy one too. Vernon Schillinger, because he is a neonazi, which is enough. And he is just plain BAD (rapist, murderer, coward, blackmailer... you name it)... And it’s not even a love hate situation, i despise the guy so  much, he makes me wanna crawl off my skin whenever he is on screen. Also i think he’s quite one dimensional which is very weird for that show but yeah. He is The Bad Guy.
3. What is your favourite episode of 4? Well that’s a harder one lmao, because you know, the show has been going on since 1963, which means i have many many favourites... Imma go only with reboot, cause thats the one i know better and i have to say it’s the one i enjoy the most. I think my all time fave is the two parts one, The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances, because those are just so perfect in every aspect imo. But i also love love love the library arc from season 4 (i think lmao) because KUDOS FOR MAKING US INSENSITIVE ABOUT A CHARACTER’S DEATH ONLY FOT IT TO KILL US LATER (and overall the episodes are so so good). Also, because i’m a hoe for big dramatic moments, the episodes with the Master (end of s3 and end of s4 mainly, i dont really like Missy) and the two parts The Stolen Earth/Journey’s end (i remember being so hyped by all of them squading up). Also, it’s not an episode but it deserves its place there: the entire season 6. Because Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Alex Kingston and Arthur Darvill are just so good. I didnt really enjoy seasons 8 to 10 (even tho i adore Peter Capaldi), but season 7 also has some that i loved (Angels in Manhattan and The Name of the Doctor killed me). And the 50th anniversary. I MEAN THIS IS COMPLICATE I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH IT HAS SO MANY GOOD EPISODES (and it’s the first show i got obsessed with so theres that)
4. What is your favourite season of 5? I think i’ll go with season 2 (?), because i love the og squad and they were all in it in s2, and i think the arcs were done really well (and the last episode, haha, me dead)... S3 and 4 i enjoyed less cause i think the teams didn’t really work without Tosh, Owen and Ianto... I couldn’t really find that magic again (and yes i’m still bitter).
5. Who is your favourite couple in 3? It’s hard to find ALIVE people to form couples with lmao so i’ll go with one that is in kinda stand-by... it’s complicate...  Rick and Michonne cause i loved how they were best friends first and how their whole story was built... It made a lot of sense to me. Also i love the show less nowadays but i think those are still strong characters (minus Rick now lol)
6. Who is your favourite couple in 2? I had to snort. I know, it’s going to surprise you all, but it’s Manon and Charles OF COURSE. Kidding (pls. break. them. up). It’s Eliott and Lucas (how many of you all are surprised) because. Do i need to explain. Just. Everything. I can’t even put it into words. they’re just a perfect match and so in tune and so in love and i should stop now but i won’t so i’m sorry. I love how they complete each other and understand each other, and i loved how Lucas made Eliott’s dream real (polaris), and i love how they arent perfect yet they learn with each other and they make each other better . I love how cute they look and how in love and how raw. I love the way Lucas’ voice softens when he talks to eliott, and the way eliott’s eyes are so full of wonder. Also the way they fight sometimes but always come back to each other and love stronger. And their ship names literally means “chosen one”, how could I not ship? LISTEN THEY JUST FIT OKAY AND I WONT TAKE ANY CRITICISM
7. What is your favourite episode of 1? oh god i don’t remember them all at all lmao but imma try to come up with one (not 22838 like i normally do). So i’d say 4x11 (revenge is sweet)?? but honestly the show is so continuous that its hard to choose one ep... id say s4 is my favourite hands down though
8. What is your favourite episode of 5? YES THAT I CAN!! it’s from season 1, even though i love s2 better overall, Countrycide. I loved everything about that ep, and it still sends shivers down my spine when i think about it. I particularly enjoyed how it depicted the team’s relationships and how it showed that monsters can be amongst mankind (which, we been knew, but still. it was very well done for a show that fights aliens to fight humans)
9. What is your favourite season of 2? Another easy one! Season 3, as my entire blog can attest. It’s just. A masterpiece. That’s it that’s the post.
10. How long have you watched 1? I bingewatched it in like two months (cause i had to take breaks because school) in 2016. It’s a show that ended around 2000 so it’s not like i HAD to wait, and the episodes aren’t really stand alone so i had to watch them in a row.
11. How did you become interested in 3? I started watching with my dad because he is a cinephile that shows me loads of movies and tv series, then showed it to my mom. And now my dad stopped watching so i watch it with my mom exclusively even though i dont enjoy as much as i used to (still love it though).
12. Who is your favourite actor in 4? Matt Smith (even though i adored Eccleston, and couldn’t appreciate Tennant’s AMAZINGNESS cause i was too sad to see 9 go aoimjdk). But Matt Smith is the funniest, most Doctor-ish one imo.
13. Which do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5? This is gonna sound like a betrayal to shows i’ve watched for so many years but Skam France, hands down. (i’m obsessed okay)
14. Which show have you seen more episodes of, 1 or 3? 3 because it has more eps and i’m caught up with both, so logically its 3.
15. If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be? Umh i think i’m kinda similar to Clara in some ways (?). Maybe. Like in the way we’re both hopeless romantic in search of an adventurous life. Plus, she is a lgbt+ icon and you can’t convince me otherwise so there’s that. i mean i think i globally identify with companions cause i wanna be them so bad lmao (imagine how cool it would be for my nerdy self ugh). But i look like a Sontaran so. Mayhaps i’d be one of those instead
16. Would a crossover between 3 and 4 work? umh that’d be funny as hell. The Doctor just jumping in a zombie apocalypse. Though i think they’d find a way to stop the apocalypse, so the second show would be annihilated by the first one. Mmh. Interesting still, up for it (i’m up for anything tbh)
17. Pair two characters in 1 who would make an unlikely but strangely okay couple? That’s the hardest one i had to answer GOD. I’d go with the crack ship, Ryan O’Reilly and Miguel Alvarez, tho they would both kill me and then burn my body if they ever saw this
18. Overall, which show has the better storyline, 3 or 5? Weeeelll i think The Walking Dead used to have an amazing storyline (the Governor’s arc was spectacular), but now i’d go with Torchwood cause sometimes (a lot of times), shows that don’t try to make it last for ages tie everything better. And Torchwood did tie things well enough imo (even tho i’m forever sad and bitter)
19. Which has the better theme music, 2 or 4? I don’ think Skam France has a theme music?? more like soundtracks (amazing ones)??? But i mean even if it did Doctor Who would still win cause the themes are fantastic (yes i went there)
This was so fun guys so imma tag @evnisak, @isak-valterssen, @jebentnietalleen, @demauryy, @srodvlv, @takaoparadise, @starcassstic, @thebananaslug, @sleepingthroughmyproblems, @akalousthings and anyone else i forgot, or anyone wanting to do this really

Strix, oh holy knower of Jug- Why do you think the serpent symbol on Jughead’s jacket is different from Sweetpea, Toni, and Fangs - when theirs is all the same, if you had to speculate? I didn’t even notice til today but now the thought is hopping around in my brain and the question won’t shut up, please help.
Also, I didn’t notice for a while that his tattoo had a crown on it (pre fandom, even though I watched the episodes more than once I just didn’t notice til I saw images of it lol) that’s kinda awesome.
Well official answer is that FP and Jug gave different logos because FP is the leader and Jug is his son. Idk. Everyone except the Joneses have a different one.
As to speculative answer, well, I have an idea.
The same reason, as you pointed out, Jug’s tattoo has a crown, why Jug’s beanie is a crown, why he was called canonically “Serpent Prince”. Jug is, arguably, white trash. He comes from a poor neighbourhood and literally had $18 to his name. But he’s also Southside royalty, in a way, and not just because FP is Prime Snake Papa. This ties-in with an implication from the new comics reboot. (actually, Jug’s poverty also is lifted from the older comics — in them, Jug had a Brooklyn-reminiscent accent and it was often implied that he was a weirdo outsider not because he was into burgers more than girls, but because he was from a different socio-economic background. this characterisation isn’t as popular in newer comics.) So in the newer comics, Jughead’s family was rich. FP then made some bad investments in a water company, lost his money, and that’s how Jughead got his name — the kids used to bully him for it, Reggie actually, I think. So Jug went from Riches to Rags like V did in the show (I think he was also a bratty kid, but don’t quote me on that. I haven’t checked the comics recently) This ties into this idea that the Joneses are a Riverdale founding family. Arguably, a so-called Riverdale “royalty”. I feel like this is hinted at in the show, but not outright said. So yeah Serpent Royalty status is one of the reasons why Joneses have a different logo.
Another is that maybe all of the old-guard have this logo. Idk. We’ll learn when they finally show Alice’s jacket.
And my favourite interpretation is because of Symbolism™: the two-headed snake done in a spiral, serpentine shape resembles the sign of Ouroboros — a circle where a snake eats its tail. It symbolises introspection and cyclicality — something that is constantly re-creating itself; an infinity cycle of life and death. And I feel like it plays into the notion that S2 tries to hammer in without prejudice — that for Joneses, life is a curse. That the son is destined to repeat the father. RAS has these half-baked notions of trying to portray Riverdale as cyclical, that River Parents had the same problems as the kids have. That Betty is like Alice in a new package, same as Jug with FP, or Archie with Fred, or Veronica with Hiram. Sins of the father and all that. “We’re not our families,” Jughead said, but in a way, they are because their families’ histories shape them on a subconscious level.

5 things meme
Working though some memes...I was tagged in this by @mardymaid some time ago, and have been picking away at the draft for ages. Thanks for the tag! :)
5 things you’ll find in my bag
Season ticket Multiple purses/wallets (I keep some cards separate, and got a coin purse at Christmas that I'm trying to use so change doesn't just fall out of my other purse into the bottom of my bag...aaaand I should just get one functional purse, really) Too much lipbalm Not enough (working) pens Hairbrush and spare bobbles (bobbles ever decreasing as I use them and forget to replace them)
5 things you’ll find in my bedroom
Glass of water Digital radio Make-up and toiletries Usually a suitcase or rucksack that's only mostly been unpacked Clothes on a migratory path to another room or the laundry basket (cardigans worn once that might be worn the next day or might need to go in a drawer in the spare room)
5 things that make me happy
Not that I'm copying mardymaid or anything, but a good pub with good people and good beer. Whether it's a whole range of things to try or just one solid ale, a weekend afternoon or a Friday night, with boardgames or without, this is one of my favourite places to be. Being outside, on my own, usually with music in. I don't mind what weather if it's not *too* wet, so long as I'm dressed for it. Grey, muddy fens that seem to have no colour, brittle reeds and yellow grasses, no one for miles around, no hurry to be anywhere. Dogs! Big dogs, small dogs, pub dogs, field dogs. I love dogs so much. One day I'll have my own, and maybe then I'll be less creepy around other peoples' pets... Mornings when there's no rush to get up, when there's nothing else to do that day, the house is in order and I'm not already thinking two steps ahead about how to get to a point where I can stop getting stuff done. Always certain songs or paintings or books, when I can just...immerse myself.
5 things I’m currently into
Oh hell, The Lymond Chronicles finally got me by its claws. I was fairly indifferent to much of Queens' Play and though I loved the finale of Game of Kings, it's a long time since I read it. Then I finally started The Disorderly Knights and, oh god, I am ruined. Star Wars, always and forever. Constant low level background hum of 'or we could watch [any of the OT and Rogue One]?' I'd start a re-read of the classics if I had my copies still (once done with Lymond of course). I keep meaning to catch up on reading and writing fic too. I have been into David Olusoga's documentary on all the historical occupants of a Victorian terrace in Liverpool. I love David Olusoga lots and I love Who Do You Think You Are like the old genealogist I long to be one day, and this documentary is kind of like WDYTYA but for a house. The Good Place! I spoiled myself for the major twists in S1 deliberately before starting watching, and love it. S2 has been understandably a little more disjointed, what with all the reboots, but it's rattling along now and I'm always sad after just one episode that I have to wait a whole week for the next (huh, talk about spoiled...) I'm worried it's slipping with the lack of free time I have right now, but exercise, when I have time to relax and enjoy it and not worry about how much time for other things I might be using up. Yoga and gym and kung fu, if I can get into the habit of going regularly. If only I didn’t need to spend so much time commuting.
5 things on my to-do list
Finish writing the articles I promised to do for a couple of conference proceedings. Finally make myself submit a book proposal now it doesn't matter so much. Arrange supervisions around work agh. Continue with at least one of the half-started fics I have, but certainly with the one I actually put up the beginning of recently... I really, really want to draw people and scenes from the Dunnett books. Jerott on horseback as a Da Vinci drawing, Marthe and Francis as Mucha panels. I am so so rusty though, I tend to start things and either give up after one go when it's not quite right or power through and then not want to look at it again because it turns out it's all a bit wonky (bad habit of drawing hunched over, it's always given my drawings a bit of a slant if I do too much of the draft too quickly). Books books books. So much to read.

let’s get started
Summary:  Five times Keith was able to maintain his Resting Bitch Face to hide his feelings, and one time he couldn't. // Unconsciously, he crosses his arms, and his face falls into what Lance calls his Resting Bitch Face. Keith thinks about what it would be like to hold Lance's hand, and stare deep into his shining blue eyes, and caress his soft cheeks as they kiss. Meanwhile, Pidge and Hunk wrap up their debate, with Pidge grudgingly agreeing with Hunk that it would make sense to cloak the Castle first, then add it to the lions. As their conversation winds down, Hunk looks over to Keith, who has been quiet for a long time, to find him frowning into the distance. "Oh, jeez," he whispers to Pidge. "Keith looks really angry."
A/N: Belated (by my timezone) for Keith’s birthday, but here. Based on @sabertoothwalrus‘s art, which I said I would write for only 3 months ago. Sorry this took so long! Special thanks to my IRL friend M for her encouragement, and my lovely beta @ducky33 who is the absolute best, ilu. Most of this was written listening to this playlist, check it out!
Set during the nebulous parts of S1 and S2.
1.
Four of the five paladins sit in the secondary lounge on the main floor they occupy in the Castle. Secondary, because it's a little out of the way from their rooms or the dining room, and because the couches are more for sprawling than sitting in a circle for Team Time.
Hunk and Pidge sit on one couch, Keith on another. Lance is draped over the back of Hunk and Pidge's couch, talking to Hunk about the various pros and cons of an old film that was apparently going to have a reboot made while they were in space. Pidge watches the debate with mild interest, while Keith eyes them in mild confusion.
"Pidge, pal, buddy, dudette," Lance says, turning his head in Pidge's direction. "Give me your opinion on it."
She shrugs. "I don't know the original, though it sounds pretty cool the way you describe it." With a wicked smile she adjusts her glasses. "Though, I'm thinking you may be embellishing it as usual, seeing as it's one of your favourites."
Lance gasps in mock hurt, and clutches at his heart. "The audacity-! You, you little gremlin, have no room to talk about embellishing favourites! I still feel betrayed about how utterly shit your favourite film was."
Pidge squawks in outrage--"it's a classic!"--and tries to hit Lance with a couch cushion, but Lance merely cackles and dances out of reach. He lopes over to Keith's couch and flops down, head nearly landing in Keith's lap.
"What about you, Mullet Man?" Lance asks, grinning up him. "Any thoughts on whether a masterpiece like this should be rebooted?"
Keith frowns. "I don't actually know what film you're talking about it."
Lance gapes at him, and turns on his stomach. "Wait, seriously! Oh, man, you haven't lived till you've seen Rage of Mars. It's, like, the best film ever made?" Then he grins cheekily and taps his bottom lip with a finger. "Though...given you lived in the desert for a year, like a dusty hobo, I'm not really that surprised you haven't heard of cinema's greatest work of art."
Keith splutters and Lance pushes himself upright with a low laugh.
"Oh my god!" Keith says. "Let that go!"
"Never!"
Lance manages to dodge the smack Keith aims at him, but only just. He seems about to open his mouth to say something else to rile Keith up, when the Castle intercom system goes off.
"Number Three, can you report to the decontamination chamber, you're on the chores list with me today!" Coran's cheery voice calls out.
Lance groans and attempts to flop back over to Hunk and Pidge, but they both jeer at him teasingly. Instead, Lance sniffs at them and stalks out with his chin in the air.
"Fine, hasta la later, assholes," he says as he leaves.
The other three snicker as the door closes after him.
After a few moments to appreciate the quiet, Hunk and Pidge start a conversation about favourite films, which somehow meanders all the way through three genres (with politics slipping in there somewhere) before they end up talking sci-fi, which naturally leads to their current space adventure. From there they talk about the latest ideas they have for modifications for the lions or tech around the Castle, leading to a debate about which should get the cloaking upgrade first: the rest of the lions, or the Castle. As this happens, Keith lets their talking become low background noise as he sinks back into the couch and gets lost in his thoughts.
Talk of the films has him thinking back to the few times he went to the cinema with other foster kids, and once on a shitty date where he spent most of the film making out with a guy he was only vaguely interested in at the time. This leads him to thinking about dating. Which leads him to think about Lance. And dating Lance. And going on dates with Lance. And making out with Lance at the back of a run down movie theatre while some shitty horror film plays that neither of them are paying any attention to.
Unconsciously, he crosses his arms, and his face falls into what Lance calls his Resting Bitch Face.
Pidge looks over and snorts. "He's just being emo." She gets to her feet and brushes off her shorts. "Let's leave him to brood in peace."
Hunk raises an eyebrow at Keith, who seems to have startled a little when Pidge got up, and is looking at them with some disgruntled bewilderment. Hunk shrugs and gets to his feet as well, deciding he might as well go poke at some of Yellow's inner workings for a bit.
"See you at dinner, Keith," he says as he leaves, and Pidge throws something similar over her shoulder as she walks away.
"Oh, sure," Keith says in reply, watching them go.
After the door has closed, Keith sighs and tips his head back to rest on the couch. While it isn't cool to be emo, like Pidge suggests he is, it is better than Pidge, or any of the others for that matter, knowing what he is really thinking about. He groans and rubs a hand over his face, before scowling up at the ceiling.
He feels so wildly pathetic, getting lost in daydreams like that. About Lance, of all people! His self-proclaimed rival, the guy who couldn't help but constantly try to piss him off and goad him into doing stupid shit with him. The guy who...has one of the nicest smiles he's ever seen, and one of the sweetest laughs and...
Wait, fuck, no!

Technological nightmare
Today has been a very frustrating day, and in fact, yesterday was pretty frustrating too. On top of all of the emotional turmoil I've been putting myself through, I have also been experiencing technical difficulties to the highest degree possible. In a way, I don't really know why I'm writing this as you really don't need to know, but I guess I just need to vent.
It all started yesterday when I was trying to make some music on my laptop. I've been experimenting more with electronic music, finding new features on my music production program. I made an exciting discovery from watching a YouTube video, that I could seriously cut down the editing time, making it much easier for me to make a good song without having to fiddle around too much. All was going well until I need to save my track. The pressed to save and suddenly everything froze, and when I tried to listen to my track using Windows Media Player I discovered that this program was also experiencing difficulties. So I ended up in a situation where I couldn't listen to anything from my computer. And then the worst happened - the black screen of death!
Desperately not wanting to admit defeat I did a good old frantic Google search, quoting the file name that had been shown on the screen just before the laptop rebooted itself. It turns out this particular file had somehow messed up my sound card, or something like that. I found a forum where someone had posted a fix for the problem. It was quite complicated fix, but I decided to try to follow instructions - what else can I really do? It all seemed pretty straightforward at first, but then I realised once it was too late that I had missed a step in the instructions, therefore, the fix would not work and I didn't know how to go back and start again.
Feeling a wave of panic wash over me I was ordered to the only fix I knew: system restore. It was a long shot as quite often system restores fail on my laptop, and as I suspected, it failed yet again, however when I tested to see whether Windows Media Player would work, it did! All very strange! I don't know what had happened to fix it as the steps I had taken set me hadn't worked. Perhaps the whole problem was just a glitch.
Happily, I continued with my evening of song making and this little break had actually given me the opportunity to rethink my song and I ended up rewriting the lyrics. The final song turned out much better even though is it far from the best thing I've ever written.
After a strange night where I dreamt the S2 and I had tattoos on our feet, I woke up feeling worried again. For some reason, despite coming to the conclusion last night that S2′s flirtiness was not as rare as I had originally thought, the whole situation with still playing on my mind. I had to distract myself somehow so I set about planning and itinerary for my upcoming trip with Dobbs. I actually got quite into it and ended up making a video to send to her, showing her all of the activities I had found as well as places we could eat. I ended up re watching my video several times, excited that this was actually about to happen and not just some crazy idea that amounts to nothing.
After making the video I decided I had better get on with my uni work, and luckily it wasn't too much of a strain had some of the subjects covered in this chapter were quite interesting to me. While I was working I was listening to iTunes on shuffle, and I found myself really enjoying listening to some songs that I hadn't heard for a while. This gave me an idea that I should update my music on my phone, adding some of the songs that I had been listening to. Easy, right? Well, this is me we're talking about!
I deleted a bunch of songs from my phone that I have been skipping recently and after adding a few songs from iTunes, I decided to raid my CD collection and reacquaint myself with some old favourites. I knew this might not work as the last time I tried to use a disc in this laptop the disc drive has been making some really strange sounds and wouldn't read the disc at all. I was optimistic though, as it had been suggested that it might have been the disc that was the problem and not the disc drive. But of course, it was the disc drive that was faulty! I attempted to import one CD into iTunes and it appeared to be working, until I tried to play the track and nothing happened. Just to be sure, I put the track on my phone, but it wouldn't play on there either.
My next idea where to take the CD's downstairs and load them onto my mother's laptop. I've had my iTunes account on there for a while since my laptop started having problems a few months ago, but I don't believe I have tried to use iTunes to put music on my phone from that laptop before. I didn't realise, or had forgotten, that you cannot connect the phone to and iTunes library while it is still connected to a different one. After failing to get my songs onto my phone, I took to Google again and that is when I discovered what the problem was. I tried to find a way around it as I was worried that I would lose the existing songs from my phone yes I tried to add new ones from my mother's laptop, eventually finding something that seemed promising. According to a website I looked at, if you put your new songs into a playlist, you can actually put them on your phone without having to disconnect from the original iTunes library. This technique worked for one song, but when I tried to add more it all went wrong! Suddenly there was no music on my phone at all. Not even the songs from this new playlist.
Feeling utterly frustrated I resorted to the iTunes app on my phone to re-download all of my songs. It seem to be working, but a little while later when I tried to listen to some music I noticed that I only had 30 songs on my phone! What had happened? Clearly they hadn't been downloading. I had planned to go upstairs and pack a suitcase for my trip, but instead I found myself fiddling around my phone again. I connected it to my iTunes library on my laptop and instead of putting all of my songs back on one by one, I decided to restore my phone from a recent backup. Surely this would work... Nope! My phone began to restore, but then a notification came up on iTunes telling me that there was not enough space on my phone to complete the restore. I assumed that my phone would simply go back to how it was, so it just seems to hang as if it was still restoring, and then it turned itself off. I was really worried that this had ruined my phone, and it seemed forever until I was able to turn my phone back on again. After turning it on, I attached it to my laptop again thinking I would just be able to put the songs back on manually, but then more crazy shit started happening. It seems that my phone was syncing to iTunes even though I hadn't asked it to. I couldn't seem to stop it either and ended up pulling the cable out of my phone.
When I looked in my iTunes library on my phone I saw that some of my songs hadn't fully downloaded. Also, some had been duplicated. Still not wanting to admit defeat I went through the entire list deleting the duplicates, but all this did was glitch my phone out and it kept crashing. In the end I just let it do what it needed to do. Thankfully, in the end, I was able to download all of my songs again and so far everything seems to be OK. Somehow even the songs I tried to add from my mother's laptop where on my phone, however this does not inspire me to try that method again! I'm just thankful I have some music to listen to, even if most of the songs are ones I'm bored of.
Anyway, that was my technological nightmare. I just needed to get that off my chest. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day and I will have some more enjoyable distractions to take my mind off of S2.
