nana rewatch notes- episode 16
-nana leaving with misato really struck hachi huh
-even now, yasu is a tough egg for me to crack. he’s probably the character i have the most difficulty understanding
-hmm why did nana come over?
-so misato might be in a similar situation to shin…
-based off of nana’s body language and (mostly) the shots paying attention to her eyes, i’m lead to assume that nana behaves around yasu in a similar way she does with hachi in the future. ie. there’s reluctance (but also desire) to show them her vulnerability.
-did she want to tell him about the other night? or did she go to yasu because she felt things might’ve been over with hachi- so hachi is actually reflective of ren in this scene?
-as a teen i mostly paid attention to nana and hachi’s relationship so i feel like im reading nana and yasu for the first time lol
-yasu telling nana he thinks she came over because something was wrong and that she wanted to talk about it feels like a confrontation to nana. she apologizes for coming “with no reason”, which isn’t true, and then leaves.
-i also dont think nana really knows how to spend time with someone without an exchanging something ie sex or band practice. her shame and fear of depending on others works well into it as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-so nana definitely has feelings for yasu lol
and this seems to be the first time yasu has been made aware of them. we as the viewer don’t know that much either. how long have nana’s feelings for yasu been a thing?
-i really like the make up scene between hachi and nana… a lot.
-for one, you can tell that arguing/fighting is out of both their comfort zones. neither of them are very confrontational (which will end up being a part of their demise).
Tumblr media
-nana’s expression really says it all. she’s so relieved that hachi made amends. i don’t think it’s a reach to assume that nana thought this would end up being a permanent stain on their friendship.
-it’s just nice to see them make up is all. probably because this will be the only time we’ll see them successfully communicate with one another :)
Tumblr media
-hachi is not stupid. i think her ability to connect past things nana has said to her that were subtle references to ren was actually very intuitive of hachi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-it was just last episode that she was fantasizing about nana having sex with misato. this girl is out of control. yes this scene is meant to poke fun at how romantic and idealistic hachi is...but cmon this is GAY. why is she getting a nosebleed??
-hachi asking everyone but nana about her relationship with ren lol. one of many examples to show how scared hachi is to upset nana in case of jeopardizing their friendship.
-nobu told shin when he was drunk LMAAOOO. someone pls get shin out of here. let me not get into how fucked up it is the way all these characters expose shin to alcohol and relationship drama. i worry about him.
-okay paying attention to nobu and yasu is really important in this scene. it seems ooc for nobu to so strongly disagree with hachi’s fantasy of nana and ren getting together, but it makes a lot of sense considering it was that same stubbornness of his that was beaten down after forcefully facing the flaws of his ideals after their break up. yasu is silent until asked a question: is it possible that ren still has feelings for nana? and yasu says yes. yasu has nothing to gain from saying this, and we know it’s what he genuinely believes, and that is basically confirmation.
-the small gags of hachi not doing her work bc she’s too busy blatantly obsessing over nana at her desk are SO FUNNY. nana lives in her mind rent free and hachi doesn’t even question it.
Tumblr media
-LOOK WHO’S BACK!!! god im so obsessed with this small interaction. for one, it’s pretty obvious this is a regular occurrence. now the show is adding yet another relationship that we need to know more about. yasu was the only person ren consolidated in about leaving the band. even now, after going a-wall on nana and nobu, yasu is someone ren goes to and whom he trusts.

Hiya! Can i request a prompt where hux one day from the corner of his eye discovers a little girl just wandering around.- a force sensitive orphan taken in by ren. Only he diden’t tell hux who is very confused
There’s a story on board the Finalizer, a tale that is told by officers when the lights go out and the skeleton crew tends to the engines. Ensigns quiver behind their pillows as lieutenants recite the newest ghost story to them as though it’s a rite of passage into their crew, to listen to each chilling detail, get to the end and still be able to sleep.
A story of a ghost girl who wanders the corridors in a black nightgown, her white hair floating around her like an eerie fog. Barefoot, the girl can be no older than seven or eight standard years, walking alone in the cold night of the ship as though she’s in a trance. No one dares to talk to her or approach her, freezing with fear if they get too close to the lonely ghost and then falling to the ground in a deep sleep.
But Hux isn’t fearful of anything on board his ship, especially not silly stories that sound more akin to something his fellow cadets would have told each other in the dead of night to prove who was the bravest. Little Armitage always thought such tests were ridiculous, choosing to ignore his frightened classmates and, instead, bury his head beneath his bedcovers so he couldn’t hear them.
Even Mitaka, one of General Hux’s most trusted officers, claims to have seen the wandering girl. Hux had rolled his eyes and told his Lieutenant to stop drinking on the job but a tiny shiver runs down Hux’s spine once he sees the fear in Mitaka’s eyes.
The very next night, Hux’s eyes hold the same flash of fear.
He’s been working in his private office, running tests and simulations for one of his newest weapons, and time has gotten away from him. It’s late into the night cycle, leaving droids and the bare minimum crew members present in the corridors. In the silence, Hux is suddenly aware of his lone presence, succumbing to his nervousness and checking over his shoulder for any small figures dressed in black that may be following him.
But he finds nothing.
“Childish worries,” Hux scoffs, straightening his greatcoat upon his shoulders. “Ghosts aren’t real.”
He rounds the corner towards the turbolift that will take him to his chambers and the very fear that his officers have spoken of overcomes him, freezing his core, his skin, and almost stops his heart.
Just ahead, there’s a figure. Small, with long white hair. A child, no doubt, walking slowly as though lost, so light on her feet that her footsteps don’t make a sound. Hux swallows hard, rooted to the ground. His shuddering breath and trembling hands are his only company; does he reach for his blaster and stun it? Will his attack pass through her and result in his death? Hux cannot know but regardless, he reaches for his blaster and pulls it out of its holster, raising it slowly.
The child stops. She turns. Her eyes are open, shining like amber jewels, but the rest of her pale face is vacant. Truly, a ghost of these haunted hallways.
Hux hadn’t imagined that his end would be at the hands of a little ghost girl in the bowels of his own ship but as his finger hovers over the trigger, he’s certain that his death is nigh.
“Neeva!”
At the other end of the corridor, a familiar voice calls out a strange name, which gives Hux slight comfort that his co-commander may have come to rescue him, perhaps sensing his terror through his mystical Force powers. But Kylo looks as though he’s just leapt out of bed, barefoot in a casual pair of baggy pants and a loose, grey shirt and his hair unkempt. His dark eyes flick from the girl to Hux as he walks slowly towards the girl, every step careful and calculated.
“Ren!” Hux whispers loudly, scratching his throat. The Knight clearly has no regard for the ghost stories and approaches the girl without making any sudden movements. Hux fumbles to hold his blaster in the shooting position but Kylo holds his hand up and freezes the General’s moves without needing the Force.
“Neeva,” Kylo says again, only softer this time. His voice is laced with concern, eyebrows furrowed. The girl stops walking, shuddering to a halt. “Neeva. Wake up. Come back.”
Neeva? The ghost girl has a name, it would seem. Her amber eyes loose a speckle of their glassiness with each mentioning of her name as though being drawn out from a spell. Hux frowns, watching with a concoction of fear and curiosity that roots him to the ground as Kylo kneels down in front of the girl and takes her hand, reaching to tuck a portion of her white hair behind her ear.
“It’s just the Force,” he says, her hand dwarfed in his. “Come back to me.”
“D-Dad?”
Hux hadn’t remembered that he was still holding his blaster until it drops from his hand and clangs to the floor, startling him—though it doesn’t make him jump in surprise even nearly as much as the word that the girl has just uttered; ‘dad’.
“Yeah, brave one,” Kylo whispers. “I’m here.”
“Daddy!”
The girl blinks and suddenly, her ghostly aura seems to disappear as she throws herself into Kylo’s arms, holding on tightly to him. He’s whispering calming words to her but part of Hux wishes that someone were here to do the same for him; his heart feels like it may give out at any moment.
“Ren?” Hux picks his blaster up, noting his hands are still trembling. Kylo stands up with Neeva at his side, her arms wrapped around his waist and one of his hands rests protectively on Neeva’s back as though he thinks that Hux is still going to harm her but the General holds his hands up defensively once his weapon is back upon his belt. “I would very much appreciate a little light shed on what the kriffing hell is going on here.”
Kylo smiles, clearly amused by Hux’s lingering fear. “This is Neeva.”
Neeva raises her hand in a small wave, yawning but still managing to give Hux a smile afterwards. She looks like a perfectly normal seven year old child now that she’s snapped out of whatever strange Force-veil was covering her.
“H-Hello,” Hux replies. “Uh. Who is she?”
“My daughter,” Kylo says, and Hux’s mouth falls open. “Not...biological, before you assume anything. I adopted her when she was young after she was orphaned on a small moon.”
Neeva yawns again and Kylo picks her up, holding her effortlessly on his hip whilst she snuggles into him and rests her head on her shoulder.
“Daughter,” Hux parrots, shocked to the core. “How in hell’s name have you managed to keep her a secret? All this time!”
Kylo shrugs casually, “It was easy when she was a small child and I was living on my own ship. When we moved here, it began to stress her and caused her to begin sleepwalking.”
“You look amused, Master Ren,” Hux folds his arms.
“I am. Your officers have created ghost stories about her, scaring each other until they’re afraid to walk the corridors at night.”
“You have to admit, Ren, that there’s something eerie about her when she’s...sleepwalking.”
Kylo looks down at Neeva, who’s fallen asleep in his arms. “She’s strong with the Force, like I was when I was a child but I didn’t have anyone who understood me. But Neeva has me, and I won’t let her down.”
In his arms, the girl stirs and snuggles against Kylo’s shoulder, her arms wrapped around his neck as she smiles in her dream.
“She sees you as her father.”
Kylo’s expressions turns stern, “That’s because I am. I found her when she was no more than a toddler on the streets, lost and alone. I couldn’t leave her. She doesn’t remember her parents. From what I’ve felt in the Force, they’re dead. The only things she remembers of her life before me is hunger and cold. I’m her father.”
Hux can see the passion and the love that Kylo has for this child burning in his eyes; he’d truly Ro anything to protect her. “And the, uh, sleepwalking?”
Kylo ponders, “Perhaps isn’t it isn’t sleepwalking per se but a waking Force coma. Sometimes, the Force guides her to things in the dead of night, putting her under its hold until the trance is complete. She can’t be stopped by anyone except for someone with a strong connection to her.”
“But my officers have seen her. They’ve described her perfectly.”
“Yes,” Kylo nods. “The white hair, the bare feet. But they haven’t seen her for very long. It takes a while for our Force energies to connect so Neeva may have been walking for a while, and officers may have found her before I do. I use the Force to put them to sleep before altering their memories and carrying my daughter back to her bed. The next morning, Neeva is safe and your foolish officers think that they’ve seen a real, supernatural entity.”
Hux sighs, relief lifting a weight off his shoulders, “So there is no ghost girl haunting the halls of my ship. I knew it.”
“Liar, Kylo scoffs. “I sensed Neeva’s wandering presence and found her here. When I came around that corner, I thought the ghost was you. You were so pale, Hux.”
“I’m pale anyway.”
“Paler than usual, then. Your projecting, terrified emotions nearly knocked me over.”
Hux huffs. “Well. Do forgive me for thinking that your secret, white-haired daughter was a ghost.”
“It’s alright,” Kylo closes the gap between them. “And now that you know of her existence, I need two things from you.”
Oh, hells. “What two things?”
“One,” Kylo begins, holding up one finger. “I need you to continue to keep Neeva’s presence here a secret. It would only jeopardise her safety. She’s powerful, some would seek to exploit that.”
“Of course, Ren.”
“Two. I need you to continue to the rumour about the ghost.”
“Why?” Hux exclaims, wanting to put all of this behind him. What purpose could that possibly serve to you?”
Kylo shrugs, giving Neeva a little kiss on her head before turning away to head back to their chambers, “It’s funny.”

Angst, Tango x Vampire!Etho - Vampiric Glitches
There's been a glitch in the server. Not even Xisuma knows what it is, until a night attack reveals a vampire in their midst. Tango takes the job of confronting said vampire, even if the vampire turns out to be his love.
------------------------
I'm sorry not sorry for this one. It's mostly angst and kind of creepy, but there's some fluff at the end. Another Hermitcraft AU and mostly self indulgent, but I had a lot of fun writing it.
Obviously a warning for vampire stuff, it doesn't get too crazy but it's there.
For those of you ready for more fluff, I've got some cute requests coming, so just hold tight ;)
“We have an issue.”
Xisuma’s gaze swept over the assembled Hermits. Tango shifted uncomfortably in his spot, wondering what was going on. The admin had randomly told them to gather at the Town Hall a little while ago. He gave no context, and his voice was as calm as ever, but Xisuma didn’t normally call meetings with no warning, and every Hermit could sense something was up.
“There’s been a glitch,” Xisuma went on. “But this time, I can’t tell what it is to fix it. It’s either minor or hiding somehow. Although I hope it’s the former, I’m thinking it’s more the latter...either way, you all need to keep an eye out for anything strange. It could be anything, including potentially harmful things, so we have to be careful until we know what it is.”
Uneasy murmurs passed through the crowd of Hermits. Tango glanced at Impulse and Etho next to him. Impulse had a mixture of curiosity and concern in his gaze, and Etho seemed a bit uneasy but calm at the same time.
"I know no one has any real idea, but what do you guys think it is?" Tango asked them.
"It could be anything if Xisuma doesn't even know..." Impulse murmured. "I have no idea."
"Hopefully it's not anything too bad, but we'll see I guess," Etho said.
"Yeah," Tango sighed.
After more fruitless discussion about what it could be, the Hermits returned to their bases. By then the sun was beginning to sink, and Tango was more than ready to curl up in bed. He put the last few blocks away from finishing a build, then slipped into the sheets, sighing as he let himself relax. Still, no one had found the glitch Xisuma had talked about, but nothing had been affected either. Everyone was beginning to think it was just a minor issue.
Beeping from Tango's communicator woke him up not long after he'd fallen asleep. Letting out a yawn, shortly followed by a growl of annoyance when the communicator wouldn't shut up, he snatched it off the table and began reading the chat to see what was going on.
Impulse: WE HAVE A PROBLEM Ren: What's up my dude? Grian: Why are we being woken up before it's even midnight, come on guys Impulse: I THINK I FOUND THE GLITCH Impulse: OR SOMETHING
That piqued Tango's curiosity, all sleepiness fading. If Impulse was as scared as he seemed, it didn't sound like the glitch was something minor either.
Tango: What is it?!? Impulse: ETHO TRIED TO BITE ME
Tango had to do a double-take, and still the sentence made zero sense.
Tango: What?! Ren: Dude what? Impulse: He jumped out of nowhere and started attacking me, then while we were fighting he tried to bite me with like vampire fangs or something?? Mumbo: :0 Impulse: OH COD HE'S STILL HERE HELP Xisuma: Meet at Impulse's base everyone.
His heart beginning to pound, Tango shot out of bed. He spread his wings and jumped into the sky, beginning to fly to Impulse's base. He was worried about both of his friends--Impulse, who seemed to be in trouble; and Etho, who for some reason was attacking Impulse. His communicator fell silent halfway there, increasing Tango's worry, and he couldn't get to Impulse's base soon enough.
Most of the Hermits had gathered in the base or were heading to it when Tango arrived. Xisuma was questioning Impulse, who looked a bit shaken, while the others looked on and listened intently. Tango landed and made his way over, straining to hear Impulse and Xisuma as he neared.
“Tell me exactly what happened,” Xisuma was saying.
“I was just sleeping, like normal, when suddenly I woke up feeling unusually cold and uneasy for seemingly no reason. I didn’t see anything right away, so I started to go back to sleep. Then something shot out of the shadows and hit me with a sword, and I realized it was Etho. We started fighting, and he pulled down his mask during it. He had fangs and started trying to bite me. I got a pretty good hit on him and he disappeared long enough for me to chat with you guys. And then obviously we were fighting again when you guys started showing up,” Impulse replied.
“Bdubs and I were working on something in Aqua Town and we got here first. We started to help Impulse fight but then Etho vanished into the shadows,” Scar said.
“I guess he didn’t like being outnumbered,” Bdubs added.
Etho was a vampire? What? Tango was struggling to process the information. He couldn't imagine Etho with fangs and a taste for blood. Besides, he'd been fine earlier. Hoping Xisuma would have answers, Tango turned his gaze to the admin, who was currently silent, looking thoughtful.
“Well...assuming Etho being a vampire is the glitch...that makes it a lot harder to fix,” Xisuma said after a moment.
“It can be done, though, right?” Tango asked.
“I’m not sure,” Xisuma admitted. “I can code the server, but I can’t code a player. Etho has to fix himself, in a sense. We might be able to help him along, but ultimately he has to fix himself. And if he can’t...” Xisuma trailed off, and Tango’s heart twisted as he realized what the admin was going to say. “If he can’t, we’ll have to kill him. We can't have a vampire to worry about all the time."
In all honesty, Tango knew Xisuma was right. But the thought hurt a lot more than he wanted to admit. He’d never told anyone, and somehow no one had found out, but Tango had a pretty significant crush on Etho. He was a lot more than a friend by this point, and Tango didn’t know if he could deal with losing him.
“We need to talk to him, then,” Scar said. “Maybe we could talk some sense into him.”
“He’s not going to come out if it’s a big group, though,” Impulse pointed out.
“Maybe someone needs to go alone to somewhere Etho would be able to easily find them, while the rest of us stay here on stand by if they need help,” Bdubs said.
“I’ll go.” Tango didn’t even realize what he was saying at first. His heart spoke before his mind, needing to know that Etho was okay. But he didn’t correct himself once it was out. It could be fun, right? Exciting? Maybe?
"I don't like the idea of someone going alone in such a dangerous situation, but I guess we don't have a choice," Xisuma sighed. He glanced at Tango, the seriousness in his eyes making the demon hybrid shiver. "Are you sure you're okay with doing this, Tango?"
"Yeah. If I can build decked out and survive the ravagers, I can deal with Etho," Tango assured, with much more confidence than he felt.
"Oh, I don't doubt you'll survive him," Xisuma replied. "What I'm worried about is what will happen if you can't convince him. If he doesn't change, whoever goes will have to kill him, and I'm honestly not sure you can do that, Tango."
Tango swallowed hard. That wasn't something he'd considered at all, nor did he think it was something he could do. But...something told him he would be even worse off if he wasn't the one to go. This was something he had to do. He could only hope that death would be an unnecessary measure.
"I can," Tango replied, just barely managing to keep his voice firm.
Xisuma gave him a long stare, then sighed. "Okay, fine. Just please, be careful."
"I will," Tango promised. "Should I go now?"
"I guess so, while there's still plenty of night left," Xisuma agreed. "If you need help, we'll be a message away. Check Etho's base first."
Tango gave one last nod to Xisuma before taking off again. As he flew, he was painfully aware of his sword resting in its sheath against his side. He desperately hoped he wouldn't have to use it against Etho. On second thought, maybe he wasn't the right person for this job. But he wasn't going to turn back now.
The base that was normally so friendly and cheerful-looking now gave Tango chills as he landed. Structures of varying looks and heights cast eerie shadows throughout Etho's base, and the fact that it was dead silent didn't help at all. Tango struggled to stay calm as he slowly made his way through the base, his gaze flicking nervously from shadow to shadow as he watched and waited for Etho.
"So they sent you to kill me, huh?"
The whisper about gave Tango a heart attack. He spun around, frantically searching for the source of the sound, but he didn't see anything.
"Funny. I was wondering what your blood tasted like~"
Tango's heart was pounding as he continued to spin in circles, unable to find Etho. "E-Etho, stop, please..." he said, hating how his voice trembled slightly. It scared him, how much Etho had changed. "This isn't you."
"No. It's better." Etho's voice was a slight snarl, putting Tango even more on edge.
"At least come out!" Tango said desperately. He was terrified, drenched in sweat. This was by far the most exciting night he'd had in a long time, but he hated it with every rapid breath he took.
Something dropped down behind Tango. He whipped around, his heart skipping a beat as he met Etho's mismatched eyes, practically glowing with the menace they held. The temperature seemed to drop significantly, while Tango's heart rate spiked. He gulped, trembling with either cold or fear, he didn't know.
"Etho..." Tango whispered, not knowing what else to say. The now-vampire's stare didn't waver, but Tango noticed his hand slipping to his sword. "Please, Etho. Listen to me. Come back to me. I don't want to have to fight you," he begged.
Etho drew his sword. "Too bad," he said coldly as he raised the blade.
Instinctively, Tango pulled his sword out to block it. The weapons clashed, the sound breaking the quiet. Etho pulled his back to attack again, but Tango blocked. The cycle continued, neither of them giving nor taking hits. Soon, Tango's moves began to slow as he grew tired. He couldn't take this much longer.
"Etho, just stop. You're stronger than this. You can fight it," Tango said, praying Etho would listen.
"Why should I? I'm fine like this. No one can convince me otherwise," Etho hissed.
"I will!" Tango growled. "I'm not losing you, Etho!"
Fueled by his new determination, Tango began to overpower Etho. After a few more blocks and attempted hits, Tango tried a disarming move. Etho's sword flew out of his hand, leaving him defenseless.
"Now you have to listen to me," Tango said.
"I won't," Etho growled. He spread his arms, leaving his chest and ultimately his heart vulnerable. "Just finish the job, Tango. You can't change me back, and I know Xisuma gave you one other option if I didn't listen. Now do it."
"I..." Tango glanced at his sword, then at Etho. Tears pricked at his eyes and a sob escaped his throat. "I can't. I can't kill you, Etho. It would destroy me."
"Guess you're mine then." In a flash, Etho had pulled his mask down and lunged. Pain stabbed through Tango's neck as Etho's fangs sank in, and he let out a choked cry. He pulled away from Etho and pressed a hand against the wound. Etho stared at him, licking his bloody lips and fangs. Tango's stomach twisted at the sight, and his mind drifted to his communicator. Should he call for help? He was definitely in need of it. But if the others saw this, Tango had a feeling Etho wouldn't last long. Something told him there was still hope for Etho, he just had to keep trying.
"What's on your mind?"
Etho's voice, twisted into a demonic whisper, jolted Tango back to reality. He had an idea. Love confessions worked for this sort of thing in the movies, right? It was by no means sensible, but Tango was getting very desperate.
"You," Tango admitted. "I like you, Etho. A lot. And it hurts me to see you like this. I want to help you, but you need to cooperate with me."
"That's sweet. But I already told you, there's nothing to be helped. This is fine," Etho said.
"Is it?" Tango asked softly. "Are you truly okay with what you've become?"
"I-" To Tango's surprise, Etho faltered. "No. I'm not. But it's too strong for me..."
Tango's heart clenched, but he continued with new confidence. "Etho, I may not know how strong whatever this thing is, but I know for a fact you're stronger. You can beat it. I know you can."
Etho dropped to his knees, his fingers curling into fists. He whimpered softly, trembling. "It's...too strong..."
Tango sat in front of Etho and hesitantly placed a hand on his cheek, causing him to look up. "You can do it, Etho. Don't let it win."
Etho's eyes flickered and he closed them, releasing a low hiss. Tango watched anxiously as Etho battled unseen demons, mentally cheering him on. He slipped a hand into one of Etho's, and Etho's grip tightened as if it were for dear life.
Seconds turned to minutes as Etho continued to fight the glitch, urged on by Tango's words of encouragement now and then. Tango lost track of time, completely focused on Etho. It was painful watching Etho suffer, but all he could do was offer support.
Finally, Etho began to relax. His fangs began to disappear, and when his eyes fluttered open Tango noticed the normal sparkle was returning to them.
"I think...I did it..." Etho gasped.
"I think you did too!" Tango grinned. "I knew you could!"
Etho cast Tango a tired smile. "Thank you. I couldn't have done it without you, Tango."
Holding back tears, Tango wrapped his arms around Etho and pulled him close for a hug. Etho snuggled into Tango's arms in response. "I love you, Etho," Tango whispered.
"I love you too, Tango," Etho replied.
Both gazed into each other's eyes for a long moment. Then, both leaned in to meet the other's lips, letting their worries fade away as they kissed passionately.
-------
"It's been over an hour." Impulse turned to Xisuma, biting his lip anxiously. "You'd think if everything was fine they'd be back by now. I think we should look for them."
"I'm not sure. These things can sometimes take a while. I don't want to disturb the process," Xisuma responded.
"I'll be careful, I promise," Impulse said.
Xisuma sighed. "Okay. But try not to be seen, and don't engage unless it's absolutely necessary."
"Understood." With that, Impulse was off.
He flew over to Etho's base and landed on one of the upper areas. It was oddly quiet, and Impulse began to get worried until he looked down. Tango and Etho were curled up together, both sleeping soundly. Impulse smiled, reassured, and happy to see them both sleeping well.
As he made his way back to Xisuma, though, Impulse made a mental note to tease them about it later, like the amazing friend he was.

First of all. A big thank you to everyone who liked or reblogged my little story/drabble I posted yesterday. It's good to know that there are people who like what I'm writing.
So here is another piece. Still untitled. Suggestions are appreciated! It's another part of the bigger story in my head. Regarding the timeline...I think this happens a few days before yesterday's chapter. Confusing much? Let's see.
Untitled 2.1 / Against all odds
Part 1
Part 2.2
Henry Cavill x mc / ofc
Summary: Walking the dogs and confusion...again
Warnings: none
Unbeta'ed!
******
"Oh, sure. Poor little Henry. You really are to be pitied"
Her voiced dripped with sarcasm.
"I'm serious" he replied, stopping in his tracks.
"Of course." She rolled her eyes but the smile playing on her lips gave away that she was rather amused than annoyed. Sitting down on the nearby bench she eyed him pointedly from bottom to top. "A man as attractive as you had problems finding a woman." she stated. "That's ridiculous"
"Attractive?" he said raising his eyebrows in surprise as he sat down besides her.
"Oh heavens, please don't fish, Cavill. You know exactly how handsome you are."
"You're right. I think my looks are quite okay". His smile, innocent and playful at the same time, almost killed her.
"But up to now I haven't been aware that you find me attractive". He emphasized the personal pronoun by patting her knee a few times.
"Of course I do." she admitted. "Is there even one single person in the world who wouldn't agree you're good looking?"
"I just considered I might not be your type."
"I don't have a type."
She avoided Henry's gaze pretending to watch the dogs who played on the meadow on the other side of the path that had led them on top of the hill right behind Braxton Castle.
"You don't?" He wasn't convinced. "You're ex boyfriends all looked differently?"
"They were all tall. But that's it. Different hair colours, different eye colours, different body types, different looks." She tried to shrug it off.
"All right" he drawled the words more than necessary. She could tell by the way he looked at her, that he wasn't ready to bury the topic.
"Shall we?" She got up from the bench, calling her uncle's Labradors Byron and Shelley who rushed to her side immediately. "Good boys." She gave them the expected treat and leashed them.
Henry whistled on his fingers and Kal came trotting almost in slow motion. "Come on, mate. You can play with your noble friends again tomorrow." He gave Kals soft fur a few strokes before leashing him. "Good boy" he whispered tenderly. That was one of the many things she loved about Henry. His undying devotion to his animals.
"You know that dogs can't be noble, don't you?"
"Their owner is. And it makes Kal feel good to think he has some aristocratic fellows." Henry replied with a wink.
Her warm laugh was music to his ears. He loved the rough edges around it.
"Maybe we should knight him. What do you think. Sir Kal-El of Krypton?"
"Sounds fantastic. See, he already loves the idea" he replied pointing to his dog who wagged his tail somehow knowing they were talking about him.
Continuing their daily morning walk they had a lot of fun imagining a ceremony to make Kal a knight. Henrys ideas were hilarious and she almost peed herself because he made her laugh so hard. Another thing that had made her fall in love with him. His great sense of humor. She tried not to think about her feelings for Henry. It never led to anything good. Just frustration and heartache. And the nagging feeling of being a coward for not confessing her feelings to him. For just secretly fantasizing. About his lips on hers. His body on her own. Here we go again, she thought. The carousel of dreams turning endlessly, coming to no stop. But then again. It made no sense to confess feelings to a man who friendzoned her right away. Literally the first time they've ever met. He had frankly explained that he was planning on going solo. Just him, his animals and his freedom. That he was still hurting from the last breakup and that he wasn't willing to fall in love again any time soon. Of course she fell for him anyway. And she fell hard. But she was used to it. Her heart had the fatal tendency to choose the wrong ones. Maybe that was her type of guy. Mr. Wrong.
When they arrived at Henry's house she expected the usual short goodbye before she would continue her walk back to the castle. But not today. He was not willing to let her of the hook.
"So you really don't have a certain type of men you like?" he asked when she was just about to leave.
"No. Is this so hard to believe?"
"Who's your favorite actor?"
"Is that a trick question?" she eyed him suspiciously.
"No. I promise." He smirked. "I know it's me, of course." Another billion dollar smile. Another heartwarming laugh. It was a gift from god that she never blushed
"Just tell me. An actor you like and find attractive."
"Okay...Patrick Wilson from Aquaman."
"Oceanmaster, huh?" Henry internally crossed off his attributes.
Tall, blond, bright eyes, likely blue, high cheekbones, classical adonis.
"Who else?"
"Adam Driver" she said without hesitation.
"Ok. Kylo Ren it is?"
"You bet, Darling" she confirmed, giving him a pushy grin.
Well. This guy was a hulk. Black hair, dark eyes. Not the typical handsome guy, big ears, big nose, big face. But with tons of charisma, talent and charm.
"Next."
"Next?"
"Yeah...go on."
"Henry..."
"Come on, don't be a spoilsport"
She gave in with a sigh.
"Christian Bale."
Tall, light brown hair, no idea regarding the color of his eyes. Handsome guy, sharp cheekbones, broad shoulders. Strong personality.
"Ouch...Batman...that hurts." He dramatically pressed a hand on his chest.
"Don't worry, Superman. I liked him best in American Psycho. He was the perfect potrayal of Patrick Bateman."
"A serial killer. How romantic. Give me just one more."
She made a face at him but told him the next name anyway.
"Last, not least. Nicolaj Coster-Waldau as Jamie Lannister. "
"Uh-hu...the Kingslayer"
Tall, dark blonde hair, green or blue eyes. Henry wasn't sure. Stereotype of the evil but sexy prince charming.
"Satisfied? Very different looking men. Nothing in common."
"On the contrary, mylady. There is one big similarity."
"Really? Well...enlighten me, please." she said with a prompting gesture.
"It's pretty obvious. You like the bad boys. The Alphas. You have a soft spot for the villains and assholes. And mass murderers" he said snickering like a schoolboy.
"Oh fuck...I guess you're right." She couldn't help but laugh along with him. Almost unable to stop. Like a silly teenager in front of her crush. When she finally managed to calm down she smiled at him.
"I better get going now, before you start analyzing why I'm drawn to the dark side."  She winked at him and waved good bye, starting to walk away. But just when Henry was about to enter his house, standing on the doorstep, she turned around to ask one last question.
"So now that you know my type. What is yours, Cavill?" She expected him to give a short, vague, slightly funny answer. Something like "sexy blonde fitness model of course", topped with a sarcastic smile and a sweet blink of his eyes. But Henry went a little deeper into details.
"Oh, that's an easy one. Tall...estimated 5'90... dark blonde curls, beautiful green eyes, sensual lips and fantastic curves. Very smart, sophisticated, humble and kind with a great sense of humor. There's noble blood in her veins but she's never snobbish, only a little posh from time to time. Bookworm to a nerdy extend, with a weird but good taste in music. Librarian. Vegetarian. Introvert. Tattooed. She can be a terrible nuisance and a smartass. Little Miss-knows-it-all, but that's part of her charms. Plays the piano perfectly. Is afraid of horses but adores her cats and her uncle's doggos. Loves her twin brother, her uncle and his husband. Her friends and to my personal irritation her ex who is still one of her closest confidants. She doesn't know how stunning she is. Which is her biggest strenght and her biggest weakness. She's a wonderful person, the woman of my hottest dreams and simply irresistible. And thats all I guess."
And with a wicked smile on his lips he closed the door behind him, leaving her speechles with a racing heart and a bunch of wild butterflies in her belly.
*****
That's it. Thanks for reading. I'm planning to write about their first encounter soon. Maybe this is going to make everything a little clearer.

Thoughts: if the 911 characters played themselves but in a horror or action movie, what would their roles be? Aka, you know how there’s those characters in action movies or horror movies who are really funny and crack jokes (unintentionally) when they’re under intense pressure? You know those characters who figure out a way for everyone to escape the danger? What kind of person would each of the 911 characters be in either of these kinds of movies?
Ooooo this is such a unique question thank you Ren!
I don't really watch that much horror even though I know most of it's tropes but I'm just gonna stick to the action tropes if that's okay bc that I know a lot about aklhsjhs
Okay, so the first things that comes in my head is that even though we have Bobby as the captain so he's like the automatic leader of the group (for both the horror and the action roles) but given how these beloved dummies are they would all come up with different plans and argue about who's plan they should follow. I mean look at the scene at the end of 5x03, Buck and Chim specifically are definitely the ones who would try to lead and think they should follow their plans.
Chimney: Your plan makes no sense Buck! Buck: You make no sense
And then Bobby tells them to stop and then he comes up with an entirely different plan to which both Chim and Buck try to say that it was their second choice.
Okay, so as like individual tropes, though, I'm thinking of all the different tropes in action movies/shows that have a team. And this is what I came up with:
Bobby and Athena: The Leaders who come up with the plans together and decide strategy and are obviously still the Mom and Dad of the group (I'm getting very Nate and Sophie from Leverage vibes)
Chimney: The right hand man and comic relief but also the one who gets all the intel and their access to anywhere bc he always knows 'a guy' bc he makes friends easily. Also I can see him be a bit like Sophie where if it's on the mission he's the main person to go under disguise and do it extremely well, but outside of it he's the worst liar ever (like how Sophie is a terrible actress outside of the job)
Hen: I def get genius vibes with her but I feel like she'd be one of those badasses who can kick all the ass like a master fighter who knows all the different degrees each move can hurt someone/cause the less damage. She kinda reminds me a bit of Katara in the sense that she's still very healing but then can also be the most lethal.
Buck: Also the comic relief who's actually a big ol nerd and genius (kinda like Chris Evan's character, Jensen, in The Losers) but instead of being like a tech genius he's like a macgyver where he's very resourceful and get out of basically any situation. Also can kick ass. Oooo maybe he's like a thief like Parker is (lol now this is just turning into a sorta Leverage)
Eddie: Okay so Eddie is tough. bc on one had he kinda gives me the 'cool/hardened sniper vibe (yes I'm fully aware of the irony 😂) like Bucky or even the sniper from Losers or even the hardened muscle like Elliot from Leverage bc both Bucky and Elliot have that traumatic/hardened solider vibe that I think fits Eddie. But at the same time Eddie also gives me more of a Sam Wilson vibes bc Sam has trauma from being in the military too but just wants to do good. They're also very family oriented too. idk where that fits in the group tropes, but like Sam followed Steve and kept fighting for what was right, I can see Eddie do that. idk I feel like he's a mix between Bucky/Elliot and Sam. idk if this makes any sense 😂
Maddie: The tech genius who can also go on field and is great going undercover and obviously still together with Chimney
May: Also the tech genius who is Maddie's protege and obviously still Athena's daughter
Karen: The tech/engineer who builds all their gadgets for them who is obviously still married to Hen
Michael: They're inside man who often gives then their blueprint
David: They're doctor
As for Buddie they definitely still partners and battlefield boyfriends but bicker all the time and definitely on missions they have married couple banter ('No Buck we are not painting our bedroom is fine like it is.' 'Chris agrees with me that we should paint it' 'Our son agrees to everything you say' *stops talking as they proceed to fight a goon* 'As I was saying-)
idk if any of this makes any sense but this was really fun to think about. Thank you so much my beloved!!

P5R: Rebel Girl (A FeMC Story/P5R Rework) Chapter 45: Old Wounds
Ren was a little anxious waiting on the confession. Yusuke had been keeping them updated about Madarame’s condition, and it seemed good, but Madarame was old. She was worried that all of this might have put too much strain on him, and he couldn’t handle it. Then again, if he had the power to abuse his students, maybe he could make it though.
Still, he felt best to alleviate some of her worries by going to talk to Dr. Maruki about her concerns, both in and out of the metaverse. She shot him a message first, in case anyone else had plans to see him.
Ren: Hey doc, are you available?
Dr. Maruki: The coast is clear.
Ren: OMW then.
She headed over. Once she got there, she knocked on the door. “Come in,” Maruki instructed. Ren walked in. “Have a seat.” Ren did so. “What’s on your mind?”
Ren put her head in her hands. “Well, right now I’m just a bit worried.”
“How come?” Maruki asked.
“Well, it’s just our latest target…” Ren responded.
“Ah yes, I heard about that,” Maruki said. “Madarame, huh. I would never have guessed.”
“Well, it’s becoming more and more apparent to me that not everything is as it seems,” Ren said.
“True” Maruki retorted. “So, what’s the issue then?
“Well, I’m just worried that because of Madarame’s advanced age, the combined stress of almost having his palace taken over and his treasure stolen, it might just be too much for him,” Ren explained.
“I see,” Maruki said. “While it is true that your emotional standing can take a toll on one’s physical health, I don’t think there’s too much to worry about.” Ren looked up. “Remember, the shadows are incomplete, and that includes the shadows of those who have palaces. So, them losing their palace and treasure is more akin to them running out of steam. So long as someone is taking care of him, he should be fine.”
“Hm,” Ren said. “He should be fine then.”
“Well, that sure seems quick,” Maruki said. “Is there anything else you’d like to talk about? How are you outside of being a Phantom Thief?”
Ren seemed a little puzzled. “Fine enough, I guess.”
“Well, you certainly are a strong one,” Maruki remarked.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Ren asked, slightly indignant.
“Well, it’s just, not a lot of people would say they’re fine after getting falsely accused of assault,” Maruki noted.
Ren sort of pouted. “I guess that’s true.” There was a bit of silence. Ren sighed. “I’ve sort of noticed that Tokyo has changed me.”
“In what ways?” Maruki asked.
“Well, for starters, I have friends now, '' Ren said. She then realized what she had said. She panicked for a second, but decided to keep going. “Back home, I never really connected with anyone. Well, maybe when I was younger. But as things changed, no one really wanted to be friends with me.”
“I see,” Maruki observed. “Might I ask, how did you make your first friend in Tokyo?”
Ren looked at him. “Well, that, um…” She took a deep breath. “On my first day at school, I came across Ann at a crosswalk. Then Kamoshida pulled over and invited Ann in the car. He invited me as well, and we both agreed to it. I went solely to make sure Ann was alright.”
“Hm,” Maruki said, jotting things down. “So, you didn’t know her, but you wanted to keep her safe?”
Ren looked at him. “That’s right. And then when we got out, we just stuck together for the rest of the day. Well, except for when Ann had to use the bathroom. And just my luck, Kamoshida called me to his office then.”
“Oh my” Maruki said, surprised. “What happened then?”
“He tried to make a move on me,” Ren said. “But before anything could happen, Ann came in and took me out of there.”
“Hm. Well, that certainly was lucky, don’t you think?” Maruki asked.
“I guess so,” Ren said.
“Sorry, but that wasn’t entirely the answer I was expecting,” Maruki said. “She saved you because you were friends, correct?”
Ren was shocked. “I guess. But I don’t think Ann was just returning the favor. She felt really bad about not telling me about Kamoshida before that happened.”
“Hm. It seems like you have all the pieces, but you’re having trouble putting them into place” Maruki said.
Ren was confused. “I don’t suppose you have an answer then.”
“I may,” Maruki said. “But let’s see if you can’t find an answer first.” Ren thought for a moment. “If I may, let’s jog that thought process. What do you suppose would happen if you hadn’t met up with Ann but were still called to Kamoshida’s office?”
“I’m not sure,” Ren responded. “I’m not sure what would have happened between me and Kamoshida had Ann not interrupted.”
Maruki laughed. “Sorry, but you sort of touched on the answer.” Ren was perplexed. “You’re wondering what would have happened if Ann hadn’t shown up. But that’s not what I asked.” Ren was surprised. “All I asked was ‘What would happen if you hadn’t met Ann, but Kamoshida called out to you?’ Nowhere in that scenario does it state that Ann wouldn’t come.” Ren was shocked. “I think we’re sort of getting to the heart of the issue.”
“And that would be?” Ren inquired.
Maruki gave a serious look. “It’s hard for you to accept kindness at face value.” Ren was stunned. “This is just a hypothesis, but I’m guessing that due to that lack of connection you talked about in your hometown, you’re not used to receiving kindness from others. So when it does happen, you’re not 100% sure how to handle it.”
en thought about this for a moment. “I’ve been told...similar things...recently… You’re good.”
“I didn’t go to college for nothing,” Maruki said.
“What do you suggest I do?” Ren asked.
Maruki paused. “Well, like most things, this isn’t an overnight fix. But I think this is a case for Ockham's Razor. You have friends now. You should work on accepting their kindness when it is offered.”
Ren seemed a bit disappointed in herself. “I guess that makes sense.” She sighed deeply.
“I guess that’s a bit harder than I thought,” Maruki reacted.
“No, it’s just…” Ren said. “I get what you’re saying, and I think I’ve been getting better at that, but after spending so long putting up walls, it’s hard to know how to take them down without breaking.”
Maruki clearly saw Ren was troubled. The idea that people would be nice to her without reason is something that rarely crossed her mind, and in turn it made her keep people at arm’s length. In an instant, Maruki decided to do something a bit drastic.
“...as Rumi” he said, seemingly randomly. Ren looked up at him, confusion strewn about her face. “‘I’m not as good a cook as Rumi.’ That’s what I was saying at the clean up.”
Ren was curious about this sudden topic shift, but decided to roll with it. “And, who is Rumi?”
“My ex-girlfriend,” Maruki stated.
“Oh” Ren said, trying not to push it.
“Heh,” Maruki chuckled, catching Ren’s attention. “Our break-up was a little unusual.” Tears started to stream down his eyes. “You see, we were engaged to be wed. However, fate can be cruel sometimes. Her family home was robbed, and her parents were murdered. She went into a catatonic shock, and fell into a coma.
I visited her every day in the hospital. I was at a point where I’d give anything to see her smile again. Fate can be funny too. I had been researching cognitive psience a bit, and in the moment I wished for anything to get Rumi back, she woke up. However, she had no idea who I was.
I think whatever power I had was starting to manifest. After she had woken up, the doctors had examined her. Her memory was scuffed, but she was Rumi all the same. However, I decided that if I were to stay in Rumi’s life, it would only serve to hurt her. So, we split up.
After that, I grew even more involved in my research. I was more dedicated than ever to use cognitive psience for good. To make sure no one had to suffer like Rumi did. And when that was taken away from me, my palace appeared. But that didn’t last either.”
Ren was awestruck. Maruki had just said a lot, all the while his eyes were flowing like a river. “Why did you tell me all of that?”
“Well,” Maruki began, tears still erupting from his eyes, “I figured I needed to lead by example.” Ren was a tad puzzled. “You were worried about how to be more accepting of kindness and changing how you relate to people without breaking. The answer to that is break. Breaking is good. It shows that you’re responding to someone’s honest feelings with honesty of your own.”
“And that’s why you decided to spill your guts about what happened to you?” Ren asked.
Maruki nodded. He took his glasses off, dried his eyes, and put his glasses back on. “To be honest, I’ve never really gotten past what happened with Rumi. And I guess that led to the creation of my palace. But now, I have to face it head on if I wanna get anywhere else. And I suggest you do the same. You’re probably stronger than I am, which is why you seemed to hold out in your sense of justice this entire time. But if you wish to let Tokyo mold you into the best person you can be, then it’s important to show weakness when needed.”
Ren nodded. “Right.”
Councilor-Takato Maruki: Rank 2
She got up and bowed. “Thanks doctor.”
She was about to leave, but before she could, Dr. Maruki called out “Wait!” she stopped. “Before you go, would you care for a snack?” Ren smiled and picked something out of his bowl of treats.
As Ren was heading out, eating her snack, Morgana popped out “Um, don’t take this the wrong way, but it seems like you were already doing the stuff Dr. Maruki suggested. So why thank him?”
“Well, it’s complicated,” Ren said, between bites. “It’s like when you have a question in your mind, and it’s plaguing your every thought, but when you say it out loud the answer is crystal clear. I might have been growing, but now I have more of an awareness of it. Does that make sense?”
“I guess,” Morgana said, a little embarrassed. “It’s like when you picked up on my crush on Lady Ann when I told you I only have the mission to think about.”
“There you go,” Ren said. She continued eating and heading out.
Later that night, she arrived at Untouchable. “Hey,” Iwai said.
“How’s business?” Ren asked.
“Business is going fine,” Iwai said. “But I’m also working on something.”
“I hope it’s more customizable parts,” Ren said.
Iwai grinned. “Ha. But no. I’m looking into the information we acquired from the diner the other day.”
“Oh” Ren said, deadpan.
Iwai looked forlorn. He sighed. “I guess I gotta tell ya. Otherwise things won’t make sense. At least, if things play out as expected. That guy, Masa, and the guy he was talking to, Tsuda. Back in the day, the three of us were mafia brethren.” Ren was a little stunned. “Back then, I was just a dumb kid lookin’ for a place to belong. And I found it. At least for a while.”
“What happened that you gave it up?” Ren asked.
“Well…” Iwai began.
The door then opened up. They looked over to see a boy a bit younger than Ren. “Hey” he said.
Iwai was a bit shocked. “What’d I tell you about coming here unannounced?”
The boy was stunned. “...Sorry.”
Iwai sighed. “No. I’m the one who’s sorry. I didn’t mean to snap at you like that.”
The boy looked at Ren. “Who’s she?”
“She’s just some hired help,” Iwai explained.
The boy was surprised. “You hired someone?”
“Yeah, well…” Iwai lamented.
“That’s great!” the boy said. Iwai was surprised. “You've been stressed out lately, so it’ll help to have someone lighten the load.”
wai was still shocked. “Heh. Careful now. With thinking like that, if you start a business of your own, you might run me out.”
The boy’s face was now flush. “Aw stop. You’re embarrassing me.” He turned to Ren. “I’m Kaoru. Kaoru Iwai.”
Ren was a little surprised. “My son,” Iwai said, hoping to clarify, but only serving to confuse Ren some more. “He’s a third year in middle school.”
Kaoru nodded. “And what’s your name?”
Ren was still trying to process everything. Still, she composed herself and introduced herself. “Ren. Ren Amamiya. Second-year high schooler, and part time worker at your father’s store.”
“Wow,” Kaoru said. He bowed. “Nice to meet you.”
“Likewise” Ren said.
“So, what are you doing here anyways?” Iwai asked.
“Oh, right,” Kaoru said. “I’m wondering if you’ll be home for dinner tonight. I headed out shopping and was wondering if I needed to get enough food for the both of us, or just me.” Ren took note of that particular line.
Iwai checked his phone. “You say you just left to go shopping?” Kaoru nodded. “Alright. Get enough for both of us. I’ve gotta finish a few things around the shop, and then I’ll join you, and we can go home together.”
“Oh. OK” Kaoru said. He started to leave. “It was nice meeting you, Ren. Ah. I should be calling you ‘Ren-snepai’.” Ren blushed just a little. “See you later!” He left.
Iwai looked a mixture of relieved, disappointed, and amused. “So, what happened to Kaoru’s mom?” Ren asked.
Iwai was now more surprised than that strange trio of emotions he felt a second ago. He sighed. “Well, for starters, Kaoru isn’t my biological child” he began explaining. Ren felt confused, concerned, and weirdly, relieved. “Do you want the lie or the truth?”
“Both, if possible” Ren said, defaulting on her natural playfulness.
“Hm. Figures” Iwai said. “I told Kaoru, and pretty much everyone who doesn’t know me, that Kaoru’s parents died in a car crash, and I took him in. I figured something must have happened to him. When I first came across him, I noticed he had this scar shaped like a gecko.”
“You mean, like yours?” Ren asked.
“Well, that came after,” Iwai said. “I got it to show solidarity with Kaoru. It’s like a family crest.”
“Softie” Ren teased.
Iwai smiled, unable to deny that. He grew serious again. “What really happened was that Kaoru’s birth mom came to some of us in the Yakuza asking to sell Kaoru for drug money. When we said no, she just left him there. I decided to take care of him then. And that meant going on the straight and narrow.”
Ren was surprised. “Damn and I thought you were a softie with the lie.”
“Heh” Iwai grunted. “I just figured that this kid needed a fighting chance.”
Ren rolled her eyes. “So, Kaoru doesn’t know you are ex-yakuza?” Iwai shook his head. “Why not tell him?”
“Because…” Iwai said. “I don’t want him being dragged down by me. I know my parents never gave enough of a shit about me, so I’m trying to give enough of a shit about him. If he finds out I was a mafia guy, he’ll know I’m a failure, and all of that will go down the drain.”
“I still think you should consider it,” Ren said. “If you’re so worried about him finding out via him walking in, it might be better to explain it on your own terms.”
Iwai thought about it. “Maybe. But he’s got a lot to focus on right now. I don’t wanna drag him down when he needs to focus on things like high school entrance exams.”
“I guess that’s fair” Ren said. “But maybe you should tell him before things get out of hand.”
Iwai sighed. “You’re probably right, but I have my own hang ups.”
“That’s fine,” Ren said. “I’m not hang up free either, so I get it.”
Iwai smiled. “And you call me a softie.”
“What can I say? Birds of a feather…” Ren noted. Iwai got a good chuckle out of that.
Hanged Man-Munehisa Iwai: Rank 3.
“Anyways, you should get going,” Iwai said. “In case you forgot, I've gotta get home for dinner.”
“Right” Ren nodded. She gleefully left the store and went back to Leblanc.

Crowned by the devil - ch. 12
Summary: you knew that you had to talk to Kylo, but you also knew that it wouldn’t be pretty.
Warnings: Kylo is a dick, child abuse mention, slavery, trauma
A/N: it’s been a hot minute since the last time I update this and it makes me feel bad, I really like this story and to hera your feedback, but College has been really intense and working things out has been hard.
Despite that, I really do hope that you all like this, just beware of the warnings as usual and be safe. Love you all.
My masterlist
Previous Chapter
Tumblr media
You woke up in the warm bed, but this time it almost seemed cold when compared to the boiling guilt pumping in your veins and making your stomach hurt. You opened your eyes to discover that Kylo wasn’t laying by your side anymore and the fact made you feel relieved, the last thing you were looking for was the knight prying on your confused mind once more before trying to convince you that everything was fine.
Everything was most certainly not fine, he wanted to own you and you had given into his wishes the previous night, you who promised that the only owner of yourself would be you for the rest of your life. No matter how much Ren could please you, it shouldn’t be enough for you to betray everything you had become in your life and everything you had fought for.
The problem with the realization was how you would make him understand, you knew that Kylo always had his way, after all, he ruled most of the Galaxy, and you were also aware that it wouldn’t be a pleasant conversation since both you and him had a temper. And so you decided that for the time being you would enjoy your time without Kylo.
After you sort of figured things out, getting ready for your day was surprisingly easy, you were actually excited to work with Mitaka in the project, excited to show your side of the story to the powerful old man sitting in chairs while deciding who deserved to live and who deserved to die. Even if you and Kylo didn’t work out, you would leave your mark in the Order, you would represent the millions ignored by their politics.
Determined, you walked through the halls, passing troopers and other workers as you headed to the meeting room where Mitaka would wait for you before heading to the library, it was research day.
When you finally got to the room, you saw the lieutenant, seeming as excited as usual, sat at the table, his face holding a gentle smile as his eyes turned to you.
“Miss y/n” his voice echoed through the empty meeting space and it caused you to smirk, his usual formality towards you seemed funny.
“Good morning, Mitaka. Quit the miss as I said please, we are friends now” as he assimilated the words you could see redness spreading and staining his light coloured face.
“Thank you, y/n” he said your name with a certain caution as if he was testing it in his tongue, almost like it was a foreign word, something entirely new. “Are you ready to head to the library? We have a full day ahead of us”.
You nodded still amused with his reaction, it wasn’t very often that anyone would treat you with such respect and kindness and you admired his capacity to do so.
Once again, you followed him through the endless amount of halls in the Steadfast, walking past empty bucket faces and hoping that you wouldn’t be found by or find Kylo, knowing that the encounter would ruin your day.
With a bit of anxiety, you kept on following the man watching as he paid his respect to some of the other officers and as they ignored you just as much as you ignored them.
Your anxiety, however, dissipated as Mitaka stopped, the library coming to view and the thousands of books, archives and documents taking your breath away. It was the first time you had ever seen something like that and in your wildest dreams you would have never imagined that so many books even existed.
In your astonished state, you failed to realize that Mitaka was already inside the library and waiting for you with a look that seemed sad and you knew it meant that you were staring too hard at the books. Ignoring his pity, you followed his lead trying to act as if nothing had happened.
——————————————————————————
He watched his Empress drowned in the paper with the lieutenant he didn’t bother to get the name.
Seeing her in such a different context and yet with the same amount of hunger to achieve and conquer what she wanted made his buried heart beat faster.
It scared Kylo how much he liked her, how each day the number of hours he spent thinking of her increased, how the sheer thought of seeing her made him nervous and yet excited. The worst part was that the knight knew that she still wasn’t ready to be his, she had shown sometimes that she could give into her feelings like in the tub the previous night and in his room when he cooked breakfast, but it didn’t take her too long to doubt his intentions and her feelings.
It wasn’t like Ren imagined that it would be easy, when he decided to get her, he already knew that she was a fighter and she would fight him at all costs, but then things took a turn in the hospital after he decided to show her a little bit of how much he cared about y/n and when she finally surrendered to what she wanted, to what her body begged and to what she consciousness hated to even imagine. These turning points gave him a sense of hope.
Another turning point happened in the tub, when Kylo won the unannounced battle over control, when he proved to her that her body responded to him and wished to belong to his, when he made it clear that no one would ever please her like he would and when he showed her that her mind could not avoid her body showing her true wishes.
But he knew that things wouldn’t be as smooth as he longed to be.
For the time being, he could be satisfied with watching as his Empress discovered new sides of herself.

Through the thousands of pages that you and Mitaka could find about slavery, you saw yourself and your life, you read about your own abuse through the pain and writting of others and it was trully overwelming.
Mitaka kept looking at you, trying to figure out if you were okay through his own pile of paper as he also tried to get some useful information in whatever he was reading.
What truly hurted you wasn’t even the amount of abuse and pain you had been reading through, it was the fact that this information, that watching millions being abused and having their lives torn apart wasn’t enough reason for the men in power to abolish slavery. You knew that they had to have economic and politic reasons to spare their lives, to imagine them as beings deserving to be their own owners and to be free.
——————————————————————————
“Where did I come from, master?” you asked Kreat, fear already in your veins.
The question filled your mind constantly, but the courage to ask him never accompanied the need to know. You weren’t that clueless, after master taught you how to read you found some books here and there and you heard people talking, so you knew that Kreat couldn’t be your father.
The first evidence was that he never treated you like one of his blood, the second was that you didn’t look like him at all and lastly there wasn’t a woman that he had a relationship with.
Kreat never told you how he found or bought you, you weren’t sure which one was the case, all he ever said to you was that you owned him loyalty and love because he took care of you when no one in this Galaxy wanted to do so, that he gave you a warm home and food when you were supposed to perish in the hot Tatooine’s sand and he didn't even ask too much of you.
“Oh Angel, I was starting to wonder when you would ask me that, you are twelve after all” the man said with the sweet voice he used with you whenever he wanted something or when you had pleased him enough. “But I regret to inform you, that you are here because your parents could never love you and so they gave you to someone that could do that” he took his hand to your face, gently caressing your skin.
——————————————————————————
You entered your quarters tired, more emotionally than physically, but it all added up in a gigantic ball of stress spreading through your body at a speed never seen before. You knew that the research had to be done in order to achieve - or try to - a greater good, this motive and Mitaka were the only things keeping you motivated.
All the excitement you had felt in the morning as you walked towards the meeting room vanished as your traumas, one by one, were brought to the surface, feeding your internalized fears as a hush of adrenaline kept on pumping in your veins. This self feeding system with no apparent end happened all day and as you lied in your bed, not bothering to take your clothes off, you still felt the results on your mind and body.
And when you believed that the cycle couldn’t get worse, the door opened, revealing the same tall figure that had paid you a visit the previous night, his dominant energy filling up the room.
You immediately sight, the frustration you had been dealing with quickly increasing followed by anxiety. All the guilt you had been able to pull away also mixing with the rest of your overwhelming emotions.
“Kylo, I really want to be alone” you informed politely, doing your best to disguise your feelings, but your request didn’t seem to be enough reason for the knight to leave, since you could still hear his footsteps getting closer.
“And why is that?” his deep voice resonated and unlike the last time you heard it, all it did was increase your discomfort.
“Not in the mood to talk, leave” you stated your request one last time, taking your head off the bed and staring at his emotionless brown eyes.
“I can feel your unease about me” he said, still ignoring your request and doing whatever he wanted, as usual.
The action caused you to close your hands in fists, feeling your nails touch your skin, the small gesture helping you to keep it together, the last thing you needed was to fight with Kylo.
“Not now” you tried once again, but he ignored your needs once again and in that moment you knew it was a lost battle.
“You are still holding on, let go” you heard him as he towered your figure on the bed, his eyes still not leaving yours as he studied you.
His request did nothing but anger you further, it wasn’t like you expected him to be any different, but his level of selfishness and his complete difficulty to understand that you just couldn’t give away everything that made you who you were kept on surprising you. He was truly an infuriating man.
“Why should I do it? Give me one good reason to betray everything that I am Kylo when you can’t even respect one simple request” you spitted the words and you could already see his body tensing up as he assimilated what you had said.
Despite his tense posture, his voice didn’t come up harshly, it almost seemed broken as he tried to make you understand, trying to convince you once again to give into his needs, to give into his needs.
“There are plenty -” he started.
The way he spoke wasn’t enough to stop your outburst, however, as you walked towards the other end of the room, getting away from the bed you had been seeking comfort on and away from Kylo, you allowed your doubts to finally be said out loud.
“Are they? I don’t even know you Kylo while you know everything about me. You know things that I wouldn’t want anyone to know, you are in my fucking head all the time, but you never show me a piece of yours”.
Closing the space between you and him, his face allowed you to see his feelings perfectly, his twitching chin, his frown and lips in a furious pout were enough proof of his anger.
“You know everything you need to know about me” he said, abandoning the soft tone in which he had spoken to you just moments ago.
His statement made you laugh dryly, in fact his audacity to even suggest that you already knew enough as a whole did.
“You must be insane. You want me to marry you, but you can’t even bring yourself to tell me about your family, about your story. Where did you grow up, Kylo? Are your parents alive? Are they nice people? What did you want to be as a child? Because there’s no fucking way for you to have been the Supreme Dick of this place since you were born” you didn’t exactly think before speaking, you never did when you were angry. However, as soon as his face changed to a much darker expression, you knew you had crossed a line and, for the first time since you got kidnapped by him, you were genuinely afraid of what he could do to you.
“I will not stand this kind of insolent behavior, I will tell you what I wish to tell you. You have no right to do any requests, you are just a no one I saved. All you really need to know is that no one gave a fuck about you a few months ago, if you died, no one would even grief over you. All you need to know is that at least now you have someone who cares about you, and that someone is me and I’m not letting you go anywhere.”
His words echoed through your head mixing with the fresh memory of what Kreat had said to you many years ago. All the anger you had been feeling vanished as disgust took over, disgust of his behavior and, most of all, disgust of yourself for getting in this situation with a monster.
Closing your fists as tears streamed down your face, you punched his chest still so close to you with as much strength as you had, hoping and begging any greater power that it would be enough for him to leave you alone as you screamed the word ‘leave’ as loud as you possibly could. You never wanted to see him again.

Nosu Koshu’s return combines the Black Mercy from Superman with a Dragon Quest isekai plot that doesn’t really deliver much in the way of innovative gags and, in terms of plot, only perpetuates vague hints at larger schemes by Uneras. But maybe Ren’s sister Rin is going to get to be more relevant, so that’s good.
“Nosu Koshu of Illusions,” Magu-chan: God of Destruction, Chapter 56
By Kei Kamiki, translation by Christine Dashiell, lettering by Erika Terriquez
Available from Viz
Spoiler Warning for the Dragon Quest animated film.
Nosu Koshu, the dream god, is like the Black Mercy from Superman mythos. First appearing in the comic “For the Man Who Has Everything” by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, then adapted for Justice League Unlimited and Supergirl, it is an alien being that lets you dream of your most ardent desires–but usually with some catch, not just that, to remove the Mercy from yourself is to lose that perfect dream, but because even within that dream, like any utopia, there is always some dark side behind it. When Nosu Koshu popped up first in Magu-chan, she gave Ruru the dream of being reunited with her dead father, at the cost of being with Magu and living a healthier life of coping with loss and finding new opportunities despite that loss.
Nosu Koshu gave Magu-chan the best arc it has had up to this point–so bringing her back now for a parody of Dragon Quest and isekai storylines is tiresome. Hell, I hated that Dragon Quest animated film for its twist at the end regarding isekai stuff, so unfortunately that example tainted my appreciation for where this chapter was going.
I’m not being entirely fair to this chapter: there were details I liked. I admit some of those details were gags that I should have seen coming: Magu being reduced to a Dragon Quest Slime monster, or Uneras being shown as the final boss (which, as I’ll talk about in a moment, is potential foreshadowing to her being the Big Bad all along for this series). And I laugh heartedly when Ruru said they’ll just skip the maze level and thanks Muscar for the warning; as repetitive as their dynamic is, I do like the groove the series has set, Muscar struggling to be fearsome and intimidating and Ruru, not out of simpleness but kindheartedness, looking on the bright side and taking Muscar’s remarks as helpful rather than intimidating.
But isekai storylines have been done to death. “Magic technology goes out of wack” like Uneras putting Izuma to sleep, then having magic eyemasks to put the others into Izuma’s dream, are plot details I expect from some of the worst manga that repeatedly persist with that trope. If I want the mad scientist who keeps making magic-like objects that cause wacky hijinks, I’d get back to writing Mei Hatsume fanfiction, not sitting through G-rated To Love-Ru.
I’m trying to judge the series by its own previous examples: if you’re going to invoke a certain type of video game, even if it is an RPG, I am stuck comparing how this same series handled the fighting game tropes, offering a funny version of Smash Bros while also having more clever gags that invoke the invitation envelope from that franchise as well as even designing a bulkier headband-wearing Magu to look like Ryu from Street Fighter.
But even still, I think how another series would handle this kind of plotline about Dragon Quest-style RPGs and isekai plotlines–because I’ve seen Gintama do it, not only to parody the same content but to do the exact same plot, that being to get into someone’s body (more specifically for Magu-chan, someone’s mind) to help them through a health-related problem. And when there are so many isekai stories out there, it is ripe for parody–and there have been enough of such parodies in other series, or even isekai that are parodying their own genre and undermining their own narrative conventions.
The gags in this chapter also felt less impressive than those in previous chapters. The problem the series has had since depowering Muscar has been Uneras, and I hate saying that when she is, for better or worse, a character who resonates for manga and anime fans like us, someone portrayed as ostensibly a Western fan whose fixation on the tropes of Japanese comics and animation shows an outsider’s perspective that just gets details wrong and invokes cringe. Maybe it is naive for me to think this is all innocent: as a fan in the United States, who is going to misread cultural aspects of works that are created in cultural contexts outside of where I am, I really try to be aware and not make claims I cannot support.
So, maybe Uneras is a warning for people who think they are being reasonable and having good intentions but whose misreadings are doing actual harm. It’s not that difficult a way to measure her, given her other problematic behavior: her reaction in this chapter of thinking “hawt” upon seeing Izuma oppose her, after the series has already presented Uneras as a pseudo-maternal figure to Izuma, is all kinds of Oedipal squick that, no, ew, stop, please.
When you keep making Uneras’s behavior the instigation for the plot–creating the problems for the characters to solve–her role as the trouble-maker, as the troll, lacks the same complexities we saw earlier. When she first appeared, her antics inadvertently caused problems: if she had told Ruru that the cookies she ate would make her too powerful, then Ruru would not have accidentally blasted Izuma and Magu. In her subsequent appearances, she was carefully placed in alternative positions, sometimes purposefully trolling the characters, sometimes unintentionally causing problems that thankfully were harmless enough to be corrected by story’s end with minimal ramifications and no malice. Then she depowered Muscar, bringing the story back to square one in terms of giving him a potential redemption arc, and invoking colonialist imagery that shows her cultural ignorance is not necessarily amusing but dangerous.
If we don’t want to read something deeper behind Uneras’s behavior, within the plot of the manga itself, there is an easier understanding for why she is trolling people, tricking them, and now pulling such a dangerous Black Mercy god like Nosu Koshu into her ranks–and it’s been obvious since Uneras’s first introduction. When she premiered in unlucky Chapter 13, she made it clear that she is playing the humans and gods against each other, that she sided with the humans against her own kind to keep the gods in check. She is not the traditional notion of a hero, she is not a good-hearted cliche like Ruru: she is a puppetmaster, and that opens up more potential for what to do with her in this manga, and I tense up either because she will emerge as an antagonist in this story or because I am now attached to this idea and will feel disappointed if my prediction does not pan out that way (which, seeing as I am wanting to see every tiny cute creature as a potential villain–e.g., Nezu in My Hero Academia–may be my problem and not that of the stories’: “When you’re a hammer, and everything looks like a nail…”).
That leaves us with what the story does with Nosu Koshu. Since her introduction, she has been a passive character, fitting for a god whose ability puts people to sleep in the dream that best serves the reality they want to enter. That power gave Magu-chan the kind of storyline even the goofiest gag manga needs, one that showed how Ruru has mourned her father’s death and gave joke characters like Naputaaku a chance to rise to the occasion. But now that Nosu Koshu’s threat has been diminished, the manga is trying to figure out where to position her–and the conclusion they reach is to give Ren another god to look after. I had enjoyed how Magu-chan added more gods but made sure to give those gods their own human Pokemon trainer, so introducing Nosu Koshu but not giving her her own unique human is retreading whatever characterization we could get from Ren without developing a currently present human or a new human character we could add. It’s like when Transformers Prime introduced Smokescreen and gave him Jack as his human partner: Jack already has Arcee, and that choice diminished opportunities to give Arcee the spotlight, as her storyline faded more and more into the background while Smokescreen’s role got larger and larger. Diminishing the only woman-coded Autobot to the background didn’t help either.
But speaking of sidelining women characters, if we are going to have Nosu Koshu at the Fujisawa restaurant–and, as they do have a beach stand, it does make sense to apply this god’s talents there after Mother Fujisawa exhausted herself in an earlier chapter–pair Nosu Koshu with Ren’s sister Rin. While I have enjoyed Rin’s dynamic with Naputaaku, he is already Ren’s god partner, and Rin’s schtick has been rather stale: in the beach stand chapter, we did learn she desires to rise to the occasion to run the family business, belying her slacker demeanor. But if we’re going to move beyond the tiresome slacker schtick, having her be the partner to a literal sleepyhead like Nosu Koshu makes sense and could help both characters, contrasting how Rin’s passivity differs from Nosu Koshu’s, and showing that Rin has actual dreams she is trying to reach in her own way while Nosu Koshu has been content to force other people to literally dream without having any goal of her own. Like I just said, I tend to write ideas that I hope a story will take, then I feel disappointed when they don’t go there, and that unfairly influences my reviews. But I hope I got this one right, because after the previous chapter and now this one, it feels like Magu-chan needs an emotionally impactful chapter to give more direction to where the gags should go.

the strings of the soulmate au
So I promised @astraskylark I would break down some of the strings. I’ll be explaining Weiss’ and the symbolisms of them, and then I’ll throw in a couple of random ones about other characters I couldn’t quite fit into the story. It’s a long post sooooo, yay.
First things first, you have to know where all of hers are. Starting from top to bottom, Weiss has strings around her ears that belong to her siblings, one around her neck from Ruby, Sun around her chest, Blake around her left pinky, Yang around her right wrist, and Pyrrha around her left knee.
The Ears
Let’s start with the Schneeblings, because I love them.
Weiss is connected to Winter from her left ear, Winter is connected to Whitley from her right, and Whitley is connected to Weiss from his left. Together they form a proper circle, when they turn their backs on each other, the strings get tangled, but when they face each other their bonds flow naturally and easily. I imagine that if they were raised in a better home their bonds to each other would be really quite strong, but due to what they suffered all of their strings to each other are patchy, the threads splitting off a little. I chose to connect them by their ears for a number of reasons, 1) it was the easiest place for them to be connected, 2) having them connected by the ears was symbolic, and 3) listening to people you care about is quite important, therefore ears.
They are connected by their abuse, but they don’t quite understand how yet. All three of them reacted to their home life in different ways, as most of you probably already know. None of them understand each other because they aren’t listening, not yet anyway. I also chose the ears because they’re near the head, closer to the mind than the heart.
The ears mean misunderstanding and acceptance. Well, right now they only mean misunderstanding, but eventually they’ll mean acceptance.
The Neck
Let’s talk about the neck string. Everyone has one of these, and the relationship between those connected doesn’t have to be explicitly romantic or platonic, this is just the relationship that will ultimately have the potential to mean the absolute most to you.
But, as seen in the story, this string also has the potential to do you the most harm.
The neck is a vulnerable place. Originally, I wanted the main string to be around the pinkies, as a homage to the ‘red string of fate’ but I decided to change it up, and I’m glad I did. This string means trust, vulnerability, and (obviously) love.
Weiss’ string hasn’t formed around Ruby’s neck yet, but it will. I promise.
The Chest
I went over this in a comment already, so I’ll copy paste it here and then add onto it.
“take the bond between sun and weiss, his string wraps around her chest (meaning things like protection and warmth and all that comes with the area near her heart) and her string wraps around his stomach (the center of his body which comes with strength and resilience i suppose)”
The way I see the relationship between Sun Wukong and Weiss Schnee is a complicated one. It’s supported entirely by my own personal headcanons of these characters, as they only had like one or two scenes with each other in the show. Sun, admittedly, is a himbo. I once saw a post that said the very best friendships are between ‘the himbo and the lesbian’ which, while funny, is a concept I took and ran with.
Though, my version of Sun is... not more knowledgeable exactly, but more aware of the people around him at the cost of his own self. It took me a while to characterize him the way I wanted, and I’m still working on it, but for now in this fic he is the type of person to see the emotions and want to help them no matter what, taking no time to take a good look at his own emotions.
Weiss also isn’t good with emotions, but eventually learns more about Sun to be able to actually see him, to make him feel understood.
(It’s a match made in heaven.)
So, Sun helps Weiss and Weiss helps Sun, it just takes a little while for it to get like that.
The (Left) Pinky
Weiss’ bond with Blake is different from the first two, mainly because while Blake’s string is around Weiss’ left pinky finger, Weiss’ string is around Blake’s right bicep. Weiss is left handed, and the fact that the bond is on her left pinky instead of her right means something. The pinky is usually the smallest finger on someone’s hand. When I decided to connect them, I was admittedly thinking of pinky promises.
So that area indicates honor and commitment, as Blake and Weiss’ relationship came with a somewhat rocky start, Blake not trusting Weiss because of her name and Weiss being... well, Weiss.
As their relationship flourishes, the words ‘honor’ and ‘commitment’ seem to fit them more and more. They are tied together by their desire to make things better, Weiss sees the destruction her father had wrought and succumbs to her own righteous anger, and Blake grew up fighting for the rights of her people. They both made promises to themselves, and that is what tied Blake to her. (Though the right bicep means something similar, ‘strength and endurance.’)
The (Right) Wrist
Similar to Blake and Weiss, Weiss and Yang have different parts tied to each other. (But of course, not that different, considering that Weiss’ string is tied around Yang’s left wrist.) Their relationship (once again similar to Blake) is rocky at the start. In the fic they don’t get along for the first two or three chapters because of the way Weiss reacted to Ruby, so Yang (the best big sis ever) was like “square up, bitch” and Weiss responded in kind.
(The relationship between them is hard for me to put into words so forgive me if I don’t make much sense.)
They reluctantly grow to care for each other, not broadcasting their friendship in obvious ways, so the first time that Yang is obviously protective of Weiss, little miss ‘I don’t need friends they disappoint me’ is understandably shocked. On Yang’s side of things, the first time Weiss is obviously attempting to correct her behavior between them she’s very much surprised.
The relationship between them sort of snuck up on them, I guess.
The wrist is used to move the hand, turning it and positioning it places—the movement is simultaneously restrictive and not. Operating under the impression that Yang is right-handed and Weiss is left-handed, I had their strings go on the opposite sides of the wrists they use the most.
Things between them are important, and maybe it’s not as obvious sometimes, but they need each other. Just like they need the wrists of their non-dominant hands to do things like tie their shoes, or easily pull on a pair of pants or a shirt or something. Though there are ways to do it with only one wrist, it’s easier when you have both, right?
So their bond represents a quiet sort of devotion, ‘consistent’ and ‘helpful’ are what come to mind when I think of their strings.
The (Left) Knee
I actually touched a little on their bond in the story, so I’ll put it here in quotes and then explain further.
“If you don’t mind me asking, where are we connected from?” It was a simple question, but she couldn't quite help the small tinge of unease in her stomach.
“My left knee to your right.” Weiss said hesitantly, looking at the aforementioned string. It was glowing just a little bit more than before, the fiery red slowly going lighter shades until it turned into the pale blue that belonged to Pyrrha.
“Stability, then.” She said after a moment, smiling serenely.
“Pardon?” Weiss asked, frowning a little in confusion.
“Well, knees are used to keep you standing, aren’t they? And you’re left handed, and I’m right handed—so we favor those sides of ourselves.” Pyrrha explained after a moment, looking Weiss in the eye and smiling broadly. The look on her face was so genuine and soft that Weiss felt that she had been punched in the stomach. “So, stability.”
Stability. They keep each other grounded, standing up. Weiss shows Pyrrha a rare kindness the first day they meet, and Pyrrha (understanding that the teenage girl in front of her isn’t often kind) responds in thankfulness. They are each other’s strongest supporters, in a sense that they would always be their keeping each other standing, or helping each other get back up.
Which, if after the story is over you choose to imagine what happened in the canon universe happening here, is all together heartbreaking.
Team R_BY’s Strings
It is here where I will write the information not about Weiss specifically, but the people around her. Most of it will be relatively short, as I haven’t fleshed as much of it out as everything else. You’ll notice that some relationships have different meanings. For example, the string between Ruby and Yang means different things on the different sides, though they are similar.
Ruby’s strings that haven’t been mentioned are: Yang around her left forearm (strength and admiration), Blake around her right palm (guidance and support), Jaune around her right bicep (working well together and acceptance), Taiyang around her left ankle (motivation and pride), Qrow around her right ankle (motivation and reluctance), and Penny around her chest (protection and intimacy). Summer Rose’s string used to be around Ruby’s stomach (balance and—similar to Yang’s—strength).
Blake’s strings that haven’t been mentioned are: Yang around her neck (love and vulnerability), Sun around her right elbow (flexibility and control), Ruby around her left palm (guidance and support), Ren around her left ankle (understanding), and both of her parents are wrapped around her stomach (balance). She used to have one to Adam, one that if you read the story you know she created herself and then had Weiss cut off. It was located on her wrist. This string meant nothing but what Blake wanted it to, in the beginning it was love, but it mutated into hate. Also Adam’s a douchebag. (Not important to the strings exactly, but it’s important to me that I put that there.)
Yang’s strings that haven’t been mentioned are: Blake around her neck (love and vulnerability), Ruby around her right forearm (protectiveness and strength), Qrow around her left pinky (importance and resilience), Taiyang around her right pinky (balance and gentle love), Sun around her left shoulder (support), and Nora around her left shin (encouragement and excitability). She does not have one to her mother, there is the potential to grow one of course, but you’ll remember that Yang had never met her. But I think that you’ll find it interesting that Raven will have one connected to Yang, it will be one sided, with Raven tied to her daughter and Yang free of her mother.
Some Tidbits:
Willow Schnee used to have her strings connected to her children by the right pinky, right ring finger, and right middle finger. Her strings mirrored her children, so the strings were tied to each of their respective fingers.
Jacques Schnee has only one string, and it has long since faded to almost nothing. I imagine that this might be to one of his parents.
Sun and Neptune are tied together by their necks.
Ozpin and Salem are tied together by their necks.
Winter will eventually meet the happy huntresses, and will receive strings from both Robyn Hill and Fiona Thyme, interestingly enough—they are both around her neck.
some grimm can pull on the strings (...i’m not planning anything for the next chapter stfu)
Poly STR was totally a thing back in the day
Qrow does not have a string around his neck, not till he meets Clover at least
Winter and Qrow are connected by the palms of their hands, their relationship purely one of bitter rivalry (they are both gay leave them alone)
a lot of people have onesided strings to Miss Pyrrha Nikos, heartbreaker extraordinaire
I imagine that as the years pass Penny and Weiss might develop a string; Ruby would be ecstatic
Winter and Penny have a string together, Winter having one around the palm of her right hand and Penny having one around the palm of her left hand
Team CFVY have strings together, I mentioned once that Fox and Coco have a platonic bond around their necks, I think
Team SSSN does not, only Sun and Neptune are tied together, but they do have the potential for it to develop over time

Rosebud part 14
Some days go by fast. Other days go by incredibly slow. For Ruby, it was the ladder. Deep in the woods of Anima she sat on the porch of Ren and Nora’s orphanage with kids around the age of ten circled around her in amazement as she told them stories of her adventures. Each one more amazing than the last until the Sun was setting on the crisp winter day. Funny, she’d never particularly loved the cold but lately it was so inviting. Most likely because she was in comfy sweatpants and being pregnant made her body feel like she was a furnace. The phrase bun in the oven never felt more real. Soon it would be over though. In fact, it would be considered a day over cooked right now.
Ruby:Ok, story time is officially over.
Children:Awwww!
Little girl:But I wanna hear more about the food fight!
Little boy:Yeah! Also how do you ride a locker. I wanna try!
Ruby:Hehehe, now, now, I gotta save stories for later. Plus I bet Ren is almost done with dinner. Don’t wanna miss that now do we?
Children:Okay….
They all slumped down with puppy eyes. Ruby wasn’t naive. She’s seen this tactic; she might as well be the inventor of it. Yet it was working on her!
Ruby:Tell you what, wanna hear the song I sing to my baby? It’s practically one of the few I can actually sing well.
Children:Yaaaaay!!!
Ruby:*clears throat* Dream of anything. I'll make it all come true. Everything you need is all I'll have for you. I'm forever, Always by your si-
The front door opened and Yang came walking out with baby Kovu in her arms. The little guy has gotten pretty big in just about a year. He was wearing a black onesie and enjoying being swayed.
Yang:Ren says dinner is ready for you little ankle biters. You have five minutes to get to the table if you want dessert.
Terror spread on the children’s faces before they ran inside.
Yang:Wash your hands!
Ruby:Look at that. You have one kid and now you know how to master them all.
Yang:I think you’re forgetting who helped raise you. If anything, you’re my first child Ruby. It’s actually very comforting seeing it like that.
Ruby:It’s also emotional and I’d appreciate it if you didn’t make me cry. I’ll need all the energy I can muster when this little procrastinator decides to be born.
Yang:Like mother like daughter.
Ruby:Ah! I don’t remember giving you this bedside manner when you were blown up like a balloon. Kovu, your mom is being mean to your aunt.
Kovu does nothing but giggle and wiggles his ears.
Ruby:Fine, take her side.
Yang:He knows better than to upset his food supply. Soon you’ll be on straight solids mister and I can be free.
Kovu looks at Yang for a moment in silence. She’s a bit stunned that he might’ve understood that. Then Kovu starts tugging on her tank top and Yang’s eyes squint at him while Ruby chuckles.
Yang:I don’t think he likes that idea.
Ruby:He’s a simple boy. Boobs are his life.
Yang:Don’t lewd my son or I’ll make fun of….whatever gender your kid is. Why can’t you be a normal person and know ahead of time.
Ruby:I like the surprise. Nora knows but that’s because her and the nurse here have done basically everything. I’m surprised she hasn’t told Jaune.
Yang:He still on patrol with the others? He should really be right by your side.
Ruby:I wish he was but we agreed keeping these woods safe is top priority. Can’t afford to get careless; not this time.
Ruby rubbed her stomach slowly as she remembered a time very similar to this. Hard to believe it’s been three years. Even so, the ache still felt somewhat fresh. Yang reached out and rubbed her shoulder. A comforting smile eased Ruby’s worries and she returned the smile genuinely.
Yang:Now is the time to look forward. Wouldn’t want your anxiety to harm the baby. Aren’t you the one usually preaching about hope?
Ruby:Yeah, the curse of being a good leader strikes again. All my advice coming right back at ya.
Yang:Gotta bring it up all the good ones so you’ll remember it for your little one.
Ruby:My little one had to come out first! I’m tired of being pregnant Yang.
Yang:Yeah I went through something a little similar. Due date was coming soon and this little guy stopped being as active. I started eating ice so the cold stirred him up. Ghira even tried spooking me into labor. Oh! Let’s try that. Kovu, scare your cousin.
Ruby:You’re so ridiculous sometimes.
Yang crouches down to Ruby’s belly and holds Kovu to it. His tiny hand reaches out and starts tapping it.
The two sisters laugh at his attempt.
Ruby:Sorry Kovu. Good atte-
Yang:Ruby?
Ruby:Yang...go get the nurse and Nora.
Yang:*eyes widened* Really!?

Out in the woods, Jaune makes his rounds around his designated area like the others. The only thing distracting him from the cold was the thought of his wife. This was all for her safety and peace of mind and for that reason alone, he’d put up with anything.
Jaune reached for his scroll and brought it up. He checked on his friends' aura levels. Still high; little to no fighting has happened then. That’s all he could ask for.
Jaune:Everyone okay?
Blake:Yep
Weiss:Naturally.
Qrow:All clear.
Raven:Not so much as a beowulf on my side.
Tai:Really? I’ve killed like five.
Raven:Stop worrying about everything and they might stop seeking you out.
Tai:Mmmm nope. I need the exercise anyways.
Jaune:You need any help?
Tai:I’m just fine. Don’t worry about me for one second.
Qrow:Says the worry wart. Besides, I think you have something coming your way kid. Can you see the sky?
Jaune jumps on a branch to see above the treeline. What he saw was plumes of black smoke and the sight of birds fleeing the scene. ”Someone’s killing grimm? In my area?” He said, confused. ”Who could be out here besides-”
His heart sank to his stomach and he gripped his tight. Without a moment of hesitation, Jaune darted towards the scene. “I’m checking it out now. Everyone be ready for the worst.”
“Roger!” They all said with conviction in their voice.
It didn’t take Jaune long to get where he was headed. Each step he took brought growls and the familiar sound of metal striking bone armor. ‘It’s not them, it can’t be them. We took every precaution.’ He kept telling himself as he slowed down and crouched into the shrubs. ‘Relax Jaune, don’t get impatient. Observe and go from there.’
He took a deep breath and parted the plants in front of him. There was a forest clearing. Dozens of Ursa laid fading away while a massive one stood on its hind legs and roared. Below him was a figure in a cloak. Jaune could only see his back but it was easy to see how worn out the person was.
The cloak was all covered in dirt and their shoulders rose and fell with an intensity that could only mean deep breathing. Still it looked like they remained calm. Their stance low and poised as their hands ready their cane to the side. Wait, Jaune recognized that cane.
The Ursa slammed its weight to the ground and a shockwave blew cloak back along with the person. Jaune popped up from his hiding spot. “Ozpin?” The figure turned around. Yep, it was him.
“Hello Mr. Arc. How-“ another roar interrupted the headmaster and the Ursa charged. Ozpin was caught off guard.
“Look out!” Jaune screamed as he cloaked himself in aura and rushed over there almost as fast as Ruby. He slammed his shield right into the Ursa’s head; making it stumble back. He kept up the momentum by spinning forward and chopping the head off in one swipe.
Ozpin:Nice form. Oh how far you’ve come.
Jaune:Oz, what are you doing out here?
Ozpin:I thought that was obvious. Killing grimm like the rest of you. She’s almost due, right?
Jaune:H...How did you know we were here in the first place? This was supposed to be tight lipped.
Ozpin:It is. The only one who was supposed to know I was here was Mrs. Rose herself but as you can see, things got a bit messy.
Ozpin took a knee and held his head down with his cane supporting him. If it wasn’t for the eye and white hair, He’d looked exactly like how Oscar did after training.
Jaune:How long have you been out here?
Ozpin:Not too long. About a month.
Jaune:A month!?
Ozpin:Yeah. That Ursa Major was number 257 by the way. All the office work is making me rusty.
Jaune:You know if the other’s saw you here then they might have some choice words with you right? I appreciate you being there for Ruby but your agreement-
Ozpin:I’m well aware. It’s why I’ve been trying to remain inconspicuous. This isn’t me trying to build good karma and I have no intention on asking anybody for anything. If anything this should be my way of thanking you all for your years of service and making sure you can continue living life the way you want. It’s the least I can offer. Besides some advice.
Jaune:I think I’m a little old to be your student.
Ozpin:Hardly. Humanity might as well be kids compared to my age. You’re never too old to learn regardless; you’ve all taught me many things for example. I’m grateful for that.
Jaune:....Fine, lay it on me professor.
He sat down in front of his old professor to humor him. Oz couldn’t help but smirk as he stood up like he was about to give a lecture.
Ozpin:This part of Anima is known for slow moving grimm that are spaced well enough apart that the success rate of a traveler running away is pretty high in comparison to other places. I imagine that is one of the reasons why the orphanage was built here.
Jaune:That’s right.
Ozpin:Not a bad idea. When I arrived, I killed thirty grimm at most in my first week. Next week they were more agitated and mobile. Makes sense; Mrs. Rose was here and so were you. Childbirth is an anxiety filled event that happens by nature. However, the grimm kept showing up by the dozens and I got very busy as you can see. Which means...
Jaune:More people showed up? I knew that. Practically everyone is here by now.
Ozpin:Yes but you have to think a bit bigger than that. More people showing up isn’t the problem. It’s everyone who showed up is on edge and attracting the grimm; you all are causing the dangers that you’re trying to prevent. No doubt you could handle them together but if it wasn’t for me then at least half of you would be needlessly exhausted. That would be a real problem if a grimm of frightening destruction showed up, or a rogue maiden out for blood.
Jaune felt his heart stop for a moment. Oz was right. He’d been so caught in his head that instead of being proactive like he thought he was being, he was actually just reacting to his own fears. The only reason the plan was working was because everyone was more than skillful to handle most problems.
Oz walked over to Jaune and got him on his feet. He put away his cane and rested his hand on Jaune’s shoulder.
Ozpin:Strength and diligence are very important but not the most important right now. You all have that in spades. I bet there’s a million things on everyone’s minds right now. All valid fears no doubt. Give them a chance to get it all off their chest. A leader protects the mind along with the body. Just you do as a husband, and just like you’ll do as a father. *smiles*
Jaune:You think that highly of me huh?
Ozpin:Well you are the one who has done the most growing. Then again, that’s only natural seeing how you were….let’s say a late bloomer.
Jaune:That was almost a complete compliment.
Ozpin:Hehe, my fault. You know, I never had a son but looking at former students like you and Ren really makes me feel like…
Oz’s words trailed off and he stopped speaking. Instead he stood right in front of Jaune and examined him thoroughly. Hair, clothes, frame. He’d really grown from his first day. Jaune looked a little embarrassed and confused as Ozpin nodded and smiled with what seemed to be pride. Then, he walked off. Jaune said thank you and got only a wave goodbye. Class was dismissed.
Jaune almost wanted to call out to him but stopped; his scroll ringing nonstop like an alarm. Everyone was messaging him. Yang most of all. ‘How have I not noticed this?’ He thought answering Yang’s call.
Jaune:Hey what’s-
….
Jaune:RIGHT NOW!?
xxxx
Yang:Yes right now! I know we had this system in place but I think you should be-
Ruby:AAAAAAAHHHH!
Yang:I think you should be here for the birth!!!
Jaune:I’m on my way! We all are.
Yang:What about-
Jaune:I’d Cinder wants to show up then that’s her death wish. We’ll handle her together.
He hung up before Yang could even respond. The girl sighed to calm herself before looking over at her sister. Ruby was sweating bullets on a hospital bed they have gotten earlier. The nurse was going back and forth with clean attire for the baby and making sure Ruby’s vitals were okay. She’d been healthy all through the pregnancy but better safe than sorry. Natural births could get tricky sometimes.
Nora had the honor of actually being the person delivering the baby. She’d done it more than anyone around and it was showing. Her face displayed laser focus on the task at hand and she was dressed in proper hospital attire except for her hair which was pulled back into a bun. Truly she was the rock Ruby needed right now.
Nora:You’re doing great Ruby! Keep it up!
Ruby:Agh, you...you’d think this would be easier the second time. Hehehe….
Yang:*grabs her hand* Jaune’s on his way. All of them are by the sound of it.
Ruby:That’s good...wouldn’t mind some more happy faces in here.
Nora:Then let's make them really happy by making them to the party. How about they see you with a beautiful baby in your arms? Ready?
Ruby:*tightens grip* To get back to a life of combat skirts? You bet.
Nora:*smiles* One...Two...THREE!
xxxx
‘Almost there. I can’t believe this is actually happening.’ Jaune thought as he sprinted through the forest. Jumping over tree roots and gaining speed along the way. The man didn’t miss a step.
The sounds of his boots going across the floor began to get drowned out by other footsteps. With each passing moment a friend came into his peripheral that joined him in the journey back to Ruby. Weiss was the first, followed by Blake, and then Tai.
Blake:You nervous?
Jaune:Hell yeah, but it’ll all work out. I have you guys. I don’t know how far I would’ve made it otherwise.
Weiss:Think nothing of it. This has always been a group effort.
Jaune:Not Just with this. I mean everything. School, adventures, regular life problems, you’ve helped so much in so many ways. I couldn’t ask for better friends and family.
Tai:That goes both ways you know? We’re thankful for you just as much as you are for us.
Weiss:We love you, you dunce. I can’t imagine anything we wouldn’t do for you or Ruby honestly.
Blake:And we know it’s mutual. Now and forever, we’ll watch each other’s backs.
Jaune:Thanks guys. *smiles*
Tai:Hey, where’s Qrow and Raven?
On que a bird flies right past them and gains some distance. “That’s totally cheating” Weiss pouts as she can feel the heels of her shoes getting a bit worn. The bird flies around a tree and transforms back into Raven. “Need some help you slow pokes?” She grabs her sword and opens a portal. The group smiles and happily jumps through it. They come out the other side in front of the orphanage with Qrow leaning against the door waiting.
Qrow:Good thing I looked so you all could just leap. What if I was inside the house when Raven made that portal?
Tai:Sounds about on brand really. The kids would’ve had a good laugh.
Jaune:Never mind all that. Is Ru-
“Waaaaahhh!”
A cry from inside was heard loud and strong. Jaune’s eyes widened. It could’ve any kid. From the small kids to Kovu, but somehow, he knew it wasn’t. The cry, it belonged to someone new.
Jaune said nothing and walked towards the door. Everyone fell in line behind him with cheerful smiles on their face. They gave him space. It was his moment more than theirs after all. Ren stood with a child in his arms when he noticed them coming in. He gave his best friend and leader a smile then pointed upstairs. Jaune nodded then went right towards them; the crying getting louder as he got closer until it reached its peak with him right outside a wooden door. His heart felt like it was about to fly out of his chest. Jaune grabbed the door knob but felt too anxious to turn it. A fire in his chest that didn’t frighten him, but made this moment surreal. Then, a voice cut through it all.
“Don’t worry, I got you. Nothing will ever harm you…”
Without anymore thinking, he walked in. From that moment on, the winter night felt incredibly warm. There she was. His closest friend. His wife. Holding their newborn child in her arms with such grace and gentleness that it took his breath away. Despite what Ruby would probably think, Jaune doesn’t think he’s ever seen her look this angelic. She hasn’t even noticed him yet. Her attention focused on soothing the baby with the same song she used all pregnancy; the same song for Dustin.
“I’m close by, I’ll stay here. Through all things I will be nea- Hmm?” Ruby finally felt the presence of multiple eyes and looked up. It was a pleasant surprise to see so many loved ones staring in awe from the door while. Then there was Jaune. Speechless in front of her bed with tears in his eyes. Ruby had already been crying for several minutes and smiled back at him. Though she hadn’t realized just how happy he was; why they were all thrilled. It wasn’t just the baby. It was Ruby herself. Jaune was looking at deep pools of silver that shined like the moon’s reflection on a still lake. For the first time in a long time, Ruby finally looked like herself again.
Jaune:H...Hey…
Ruby:Hey there stranger. Looks like you were right this time around. Come say hello to your daughter Carmine.
Jaune’s smile grew even bigger. He’d forgotten all about that silly wager from long ago. Slowly he walked to Ruby’s side and she held the little one up so he could see the new addition to their lives. What he saw was beautiful. Carmine had come out with already a full head of blonde hair that grew darker and red at the tips. Her cheeks were all rosy; he’d assume from crying but he hoped that maybe she had a natural blush.
Regardless, what really captured him was when she opened her eyes. Purity couldn’t describe them. They were eyes that stole his heart in an instant. Maybe it was because he was already so emotional. Or maybe, it was because it was because they were just as captivating as Ruby’s. An intense silver that showed him anything possible.
Jaune:Hey Carmine Arc Rose. Welcome, to the best family ever.

Rank the Sohmas based on how much you like them and why?
wow that’s gonna be a hard one to do..... i’m gonna put them in categories so i don’t have to strictly rank them.
not in any particular order!~
TOP 3:
yuki - first on my list! i already made a post about this but yuki is truly the character i relate to the most and i think his arc is not only my favorite but the most interesting to watch! he’s a treasure and the character i’m most drawn to. i always like to think he’d be the one i’d more easily befriend out of all of them!
isuzu - my sweet punk goth rebel... much like yuki her story and arc is one of the most interesting ones imo. in contrast to yuki, though, i think isuzu’s character allows us to see a very different side of the repercussions abuse has on a person. yuki presents well (overall) and keeps his problems to himself, but isuzu simply can’t do that. aside from that i just LOVE her will to fight and keep going, and her softer side. i adore her relationship with tohru.
kyo - how could i NOT have this absolute good of a boy in my top 3. i love love love his character and how much growth he’s able to achieve. i love his story, i love how he interacts with people!!!!! he has anger issues BUT i believe he is actually much softer with everyone around him than what it’s seen (which is often comic relief). super enjoyable character, and has everything i ask for in an orange haired anime boy. very cool of him.
love!!!:
momiji - very good boy. much brave. great fashion sense. really important member of tohru’s support squad in breaking the curse even if he’s not even aware of it. i think he just needs a tiny push to go at it like tohru and isuzu are doing. plus he really stands out to me for his courage. when akito hurts tohru in the beach arc momiji is the one who goes out to seek help and actively tries to stop the situation. meanwhile we see hatori, shigure and kureno (adults) standing in the back. vibing. even if momiji is scared to death he always does his best to make a change.
haru - adore him. love the way he takes care of people and his personality cracks me up all the time. his scenes are the best. although i wish he kept more of the attitude he had the moment he talked back to isuzu’s parents when he was younger!! he comes off as kind of passive sometimes even if i know he’s got it inside of him (hatori and kureno can’t relate). but anyway! truly love him. ((oh and the scene of his first kiss with isuzu didn’t sit so well with me.. anyone else??))
ritsu - i adore her. i think she’s relatable and a great portrayal of someone with anxiety!! (even if it is a litte clowned and meant for comedy) i don’t care if people find her annoying, i will forever defend her honor. she has a special place in my heart. how cute is she interacting with mitsuru??? how cute is it that she follows ayame around?? AND she’s a trans sapphic character hello?????? that’s canon. if i see anyone calling her a he i WILL throw punches. please refrain.
ok!!:
akito - hate them for obvious reasons BUT THEIR STORY... THEIR CHARACTER BUILDING............... OOF. super interesting, with an immense room for growth, they’re hot and they also make a great villain. pretty cool if u ask me.
kisa - baby!!!!!!!!!!! even though her story is short i love it and i wish we could have gotten more info abour her development in school. that would have been a really great chance to explore bullying without having it be based on flashbacks (also i’d die to see a scene where haru, rin and yuki go scare off her bullies. they’re terrifying. AND WHAT ABOUT YUKI BEING KIND OF HER MENTOR... oof) anyway i just love her. i’m also the year of the tiger so i couldn’t help but feel drawn to her when i first read.
hatori - i really like him but again, i wish he would MOVE MORE. take a stance. do something. please. if he wasn’t so much of a passive character he would be higher on my list. i find him interesting and you know i’m a sucker for emotionally distant characters but.. sometimes that just doesn’t cut it :/
hiro - essential for tohru’s growth!!!!!!!! he’s annoying but he’s so cute and has so much potential. i can’t help but find him to be sweet. i feel like we’ve all been a little like him growing up. belongs to the anger management (and bad bitch) trio along with kyo and isuzu.
ayame - can’t really relate to anything about him but he’s still pretty much here and queer, so props to that!!! also immense respect for mastering the art of being insufferable.
well,, :
kagura - find her kind of annoying to be honest. i still think she’s a cool character and i like that she helps out kyo in his growth + appreciate her humanity but eh... not really interested. her violent skits don’t really make me laugh and get old real quick.
shigure - love all his scenes, he’s incredibly funny and brings a LOT to the story. he’s ESSENTIAL. i just think he’s a deep, deep asshole. from what he does to akito (the ren thing??????), to the other members of the zodiac and to even mayu. i love him and enjoy him a lot but like.. dude. i can’t unsee that.
kureno - i like him and find him interesting but like............ he could have made such an impact and yet. kinda chose not to do anything. he has the potential to be a really cool character but. he’s disappointing.

RWBY Volume 8, Chapter 1 Thoughts and Opinions
HELLO, INTERWEBS!!! At long last, we are back with more RWBY, and with it, more RWBY Thoughts and Opinions! After the absolute roller coaster that was Volume 7's cliffhanger finale, I can not imagine the insanity that awaits us this Volume. So, without further ado, here are my various thoughts and opinions on Chapter 1 of RWBY Volume 8, "Divide"
SPOILERS BELOW:
Hmm, starting off with a mysterious woman scrubbing floors, and...wait, is that...no...
I really like the way they juxtapose Cinder scrubbing with her scratching the chair. Very symbolic.
Yick, something about organic architecture just gives me the willies. I mean, is the whale aware that they double as a building complex? Can they feel the diabolical ongoings of it's rib cage? Creepy stuff.
Oof, outright taking credit for grabbing the relic, Cinder? Yeah, no way that's going to bite you in the ass.
Oh my. Mercury, Emerald, AND Hazel have new looks this season. I'm sure I'll warm up to them eventually, but right now Emerald's and Hazel's aren't really doing this. For Hazel, the outfit is all right, but the hair is a bit boring compared to his originals. Mercury's is ok, but is it just me, or is he basically wearing Yang's V4-6 outfit? I mean, it works, but still.
"Without you, I am nothing." That...didn't sound like the first time she's said that. It almost sounds like something Salem's drilled into her head for years. Cinder may be irredeemable in my opinion, but I do love a good tragic backstory.
You know, I guess would make sense for the crater to be the slums area. Can't imagine living directly under a floating landmass would be considered prime real estate.
Ooh, this old man has badger paws. I don't think we've seen that kind of Faunus trait yet.
D'aaww, Nora gave Oscar a soft hug rather than her usual glomp. So cute ^-^
I'm interested in how Oscar not telling them about Oz is going to play out.
Ok, their is a lot going on in this bar-base worth talking about, but for some reason I am fascinated by the picture of (i'm assuming) the founders in the background. What interesting designs they have. I feel like they have a story, and I would like to hear it.
Penny's dejected demeanor is giving me all of the feels Q_Q
Not sure how I feel about the rift forming between RWBYJNRO, though I guess we'll have to see where it goes. At least we have people like Jaune playing mediator.
I will say, though, I look forward to seeing Ren and Nora apart. As much as I love them as a couple, I'd very much like to see them operate as individuals.
God, Ironwood trying to manipulate Penny like that.
And there it is. Ironwood has truly revealed his true feelings, and his motivation for his attempt to launch Atlas. He isn't making a tactical retreat in order to form a new plan altogether. He's abandoning the fight altogether, leaving Remnant to die so that he and Atlas can live. It's funny, he wanted to avoid becoming Lionheart, but he was a coward too.
"Everything that follows will be on your hands". That motherf-
You know, we don't see a lot of corpses on this show, do we? Penny got better, Amber's screentime ended as she died, Roman got eaten, Pyrrha got an express viking funeral, etc, and a lot of others were only corpses for seconds before we never saw them again. They did a good job selling how proper dead Clover is here.
Ok, I don't know squat about Hospital layouts. Is it normal to have the morgue right outside of an emergency room? I mean, I guess it saves some travel time should things go wrong, but still, seems like a great anxiety generator for the patient, especially with both rooms having windows. "That's where I'll be going next."
I like the new metal arm. The fact that you can see all of the internal stuff makes it feel like it was quickly put together for the sake of urgency, while still looking cool.
Man, that rendition of "Hero" in the background. Chilling.
Is Winter getting a new look already? I must say. I like the look of the braces, and the ponytail is a vast improvement over the bun.
JESUS H CHRIST IRONWOOD!!! I THOUGHT HE WAS GOING OUT THERE TO ARREST THEM!!! THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A PRETTY BIG FASCIST MOVE, RIGHT!? HE JUST SHOT CHAD JAMES IN THE FACE!!!
What really interests me is everyone's reactions. Elm and Marrow are incredibly shocked, Harriet and Winter share their little look of doubt, and then there's Vine who just...doesn't react at all. Either that or it's all in his eyes, which we can't really see from here. Either way, not a huge reaction from him. Methinks the Ace-Ops and Winter might be starting to doubt the horse they bet on.
I find it interesting that Salem doesn't know how the Relic works, but then I suppose it makes sense, seeing as Oz probably placed them into the vaults almost immediately after finding them, so this is probably the first time she's even seen one in person..
Ok, OP time, and buckle up, guys, gals, and nonbinary pals, because this one is going to be a doozy.
-First off, the song sounds pretty good, but it seems like it's going to go through the same cycle as the rest where it doesn't do too much for me at first, but has me headbanging like a metalhead by the end of the volume
- Mantle glitching out between peaceful and wartorn is a wonderful effect. Definitely fills you with a sense of dread.
-The individual shots of Team RWBY are absolutely gorgeous. Conceptually, it's the standard "where we started and where we're at", but the composition is worthy of a chef's kiss. I think I've found my new wallpaper.
-The Ace-Ops appearing on Clover's pin is nice, but what I find interesting is Harriet and Qrow appearing back to back, especially with Harriet looking so angry. Is Harriet going to double down on her loyalty to Ironwood and go after Qrow?
- It seems Robyn is going to be Qrow's main source of support this season, though the bars seem to suggest they might be in custody for a while.
-Oscar seems to be in Salem's stronghold, which doesn't bode well for our farmboy, also, WHY DOES SALEM HAVE DEMON WINGS!? Emerald's Volume 5 illusion wasn't this scary looking!
-I feel like their's symbolism showing Team RWBY's weapons paired together like that, but I feel like it's too early to say what of. Looks pretty, though
-Ren and Nora standing so far apart. It hurts my soul! Interesting how, while Ren looks away, Nora actually turns towards him.
-I didn't notice Winter's change of expression/outfit before passing by Weiss. She went from looking confident and slightly condescending to full with doubt.
-Not a lot to say about the quick shots of Whitley and Willow other then the fact that they both look worried. The image of the Schnee Snowflake shattering, however, is VERY interesting.
-I'm always a sucker for some good ol' chess symbolism. I find it interesting that while Salem's pieces dissolve into creatures of Grimm, Ironwood's simply dissolve, leaving him alone. Perhaps shooting a fellow councilman in the face right in front of his inner circle doesn't play out as well for him as well as he thought it would.
- Speaking of the classics, also gotta love me some reflection artwork. Watts seems to be working behind Pietro's back while Pietro (presumably) works to get Amity running, while secretly worrying about Penny, whose reflection cracks, possibly symbolizing her resolve. I worry for her.
- The snowflake turning into a flower petal in Ren's hand, while a similar petal passes Nora by. I don't know what this means, but I'm intrigued.
- It seems Ruby and Yang won't be completely be at odds, judging by the look they give each other before going into the action shot.
- Hmm, while Cinder pulls a Za Warudo on the fight scene, you can see a dejected Emerald and a pissed off Neo, still moving, among the heroes. Interesting...
-Almost as interesting as Cinder grasping her Grimm arm before being engulfed in flames. Perhaps Salem pulled a Wormtail's Silver Hand with that arm.
-Is this the first time we've seen the Staff of Creation in it's entirety? I remember wanting to include it and the Lamp in my RWBY Vol 7 spritesheet, but couldn't find any images of it's bottom half. I like the little jewel on the bottom.
-Wow, CRWBY went full Kingdom Hearts with the heroes falling through the ice, and I absolutely LOVE IT! This op has some of the most gorgeous visuals the series has ever seen.
-HAPPY EVER AFTER HAPPY? NEVER AGAIN Daaaaaaamn, that's awesome. It kind of reminds me of a line from Red Like Roses Part II, "This bedtime story ends with Misery Ever After". It's incredibly haunting.
-Almost as haunting as the sketchy art style that flashes in between the words, particularly the part that shows Penny's eyes going red before the rest of her does. Did we predict Watts hacking Penny a volume too early?
-The final shot of Crescent Rose alone stuck in the snow. Damn. The theme of this op seems to be "foreboding as all hell"
Damn. Damn! DAMN! This was, without question, the best OP RWBY has ever had. By, like, a lot. The visuals were some of the best the show has ever had to offer, the foreboding is through the roof, and the symbolism is incredibly clever. I don't envy them when it comes time to make Volume 9's, because this will be a very tough act to beat. I am so happy to have RWBY back, and I am both excited and terrified to see what this show is going to do next.

Hiii! It's me again! 😂❤️Can you do sfw and nsfw alphabet for van?
Hey love! I'll get to the NSFW alphabet tonight; sorry it took so long ;-; 💖
VAN KIRYUIN SFW ALPHABET
Argument: Do they argue? How bad does it get?
Van is all about keeping the peace. He's a relaxed and go with the flow type of person, but hes also very strong willed and does pass passive aggressive comments. So you have the option of ignoring that or, you know, starting a "heated discussion"
Babies: fur baby, scaly baby, or no baby?
Fur babies! A dog and a cat. I can see him getting a corgi because he likes to keep things small lol
Cocktails: are they extroverted? Introverted? Both? With their s/o?
Hella extroverted with and without a s/o. Life is too short to keep the party to yourself, ya feel?
Dance: would they encourage their s/o to join the industry? How would they take it if they did?
Much like Ren, he'd actually prefer if youd stay away from the idol aspect and like join the design industry or maybe like art. The idol life is just too hectic.
Exit: Do they like to travel? Where would they want to go?
Anywhere thats sunny and tropical! Or like, high end. Los Angeles, the Maldives, st. Barts. You name it.
Food: what's their favorite date with their s/o?
The home-y kind. A pizza and a movie, snuggled under a blanket. As much as he likes to spoil, he actually prefers the low-key moments with his s/o
Grease: what's something special they made for their s/o?
He didnt make it but he bought his s/o a music box and played around with it a little bit so it plays his songs for them.
Honesty: would they ever hide something from their s/o?
I dont think so. He's actually a pretty open book and doesnt like to keep secrets from his s/o. Theyre a team after all.
Independence: what type of lover are they? Clingy or carefree?
Carefree. He loves to feel free more than anything and as long as you give him space, he will always come back to you and stay loyal.
Jealous: are they a jealous person?
Hes the funny kind of jealous that, in a sense, he just cracks jokes and swings an arm around his s/o when he sees someone try to hit on you.
Kindness: how far would they go for their s/o? Ride or die kind of thing?
Depends on how serious he is with them. If he sees a future, he'd do close to anything for and with them.
Love: what's their love type?
Quality time. As mentioned above, he loves to just be free and by himself, which is rare in itself, so when he finds time and spends it with you instead of alone, that's his way of showing love.
Mouth: where's their favorite place to kiss?
Neck. He's very playful and just loves to blow kisses right there; bonus points if you laugh because it tickles.
No: anything they wouldnt do with or for their s/o?
Betray himself. If it goes against his own morals or character, he wouldn't do it.
Odor: what's their favorite scent? On a s/o?
Vanilla makes the boys go wild ~ it's just a really nice scent and he loves it on you.
PDA: how open are they to PDA
Pretty open. He has nothing to hide and loves to show off his s/o's and his relationship.
Questions: will they be an open book or not?
Oh yes. Again, theyre a team and teams stick together. He doesnt see the point in hiding much of his life and expects the same in return.
Reserved: what's something that only his s/o would know about?
How much he sometimes worries about his career. He does still get nerve wrecked and thinks he might not last much longer in the industry
Serious: how long until they start to get really serious with their s/o?
Its your typical high school romance until all of a sudden you stand in front of the altar and exchange your vows. It takes a while for him to realize how serious things get
Type: what's their type in a s/o ?
Someone very confident and self aware. Someone adventurous and light hearted. Someone as carefree as him who just goes with the flow and doesnt let anyone or anything dictate their life.
Untouched: have they been in a relationship before? How many?
Oh yes he has. Much like Ren, he has a wild history of being with the ladies, though his busy life and need for freedom have ruined many of them.
Very: what's something they're really good at outside of music?
Baseball! It's his favorite sport and he plays it when he has time.
Weird: what's something odd or weird about them?
He dashes out flirtations like its nothing but gets shy and flustered when someone does it to him.
Xylophone: their favorite part about you? Physically? Mentally?
Physically its your smile because he loves to see you happy. Mentally it's your love for life and you just live it to the fullest. Very inspiring
Yearning: would they like a family? How many kids?
Yes! A son would be nice! They'd be the greatest father-son duo!
Zebra: Do they change throughout their relationship? Are they truly themselves?
He stays as true to himself as he can be so there isnt much change. You just kind of get what you see with him

Why I Don’t Want Ben Solo to Die
Look, I am aware that Kylo Ren is a widely unpopular character with Star Wars fans. And that seems only legitimate, after all he killed his own father.
But reading and listening to fans’ comments, I come across the same judgement all over again: he is simply hated because he’s not badass.
The moment he destroys the ship’s console in a fit of rage it was already clear to most fans: what a baby.
Tumblr media
When he took off his helmet so we could see his vulnerable features: that is supposed to be the villain?! He’s neither ugly nor beautiful enough! He looks normal!! (How awful.)
Tumblr media
Kylo Ren / Ben Solo after the patricide, obviously traumatized. What a sissy. He did not enjoy the terrible thing that he did. He’s in pain and sorrow because his father is dead by his own hand, which means that he did love him.
A villain who loves someone? Who doesn’t enjoy the terrible things he does? My, my, how uncool is that. What a bad example to kids watching the show.
Tumblr media
Ben watches Rey leave with the Falcon, tears on his face. He’s more miserable than ever, kneeling on the ground, literally having hit rock bottom.
But he’s the Supreme Leader now, folks!! Wasn’t that what he wanted all along? Why isn’t he triumphant?!
Ben Solo / Kylo Ren, like Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader is a split personality. Many fans have never seen Ben behind the mask, not even in his interactions with Rey, because hey, if he was secretly a hero, he ought to be badass. And Ben is not badass, the son of Han and Leia is vulnerable and timid. So there can’t be a good guy in there somewhere, am I right?
Tumblr media
Sorry, but I can’t help wondering how people can be so blind. It has been staring us in the face from the start that this man is not the story’s villain, that he is on a painful but ultimately successful way to redemption.
And by “redemption” I don’t mean coming back to the Light, but finally finding and sharing the balance the Force and the galaxy so desperately need. It wasn’t for nothing that he had promised his grandfather that he would finish what he started.
Tumblr media
A guy I know claims that the wide-spread sympathy for Kylo / Ben (mostly coming for females) springs from the fact that for some unexplainable reason the role was given to Adam Driver, and that the actor’s personal charisma is leading fans to unhealthy and illogical conclusions. He never wondered why Disney gave Driver of all people this role in the first place, and that there actually might be a very good reason for that.
It’s easier to pretend that the saga is ruined, that Lucas has lost his magic touch and Disney is defiling the saga’s miserable remainders, than to sit down and try to think about it for just a minute. To listen, instead of believing to know everything by breaking down a 9-film-3-trilogies story to “it’s always black against white, ka-boom, the white ones win, the end”. Maybe, just maybe, Lucas had a good reason for telling the prequels the way he did and for selling the rights for the sequels to the Disney studios of all places.
One of the things that annoy me most is that so many fans keep calling Ben “Kylo Ren” and simply refuse to accept that actually they are speaking about Ben Solo, the son of Han and Leia and the nephew of Luke. Hence, also, the stubborn and unrelenting “it will turn out that Rey is a Skywalker / Organa / Solo / Kenobi”, even if in the first three cases these fans would actually be expecting her to kill her own cousin or half-brother.
Many of us have grown up with and loved the Star Wars original saga. I can understand that a lot fans are irritated by both prequels and sequels because used to stuff like Jaws, Rocky, Rambo, Alien etc. they of course expect a diluted and warmed-up rehash of the original story and not a development of themes and characters.
Tumblr media
But these antis never seem to consider that Ben dying, and dying unrepentant, is the very worst service the saga could do to the original story. It has been said and shown over and over that Rey is a nobody from nowhere. Ben is, thus, indeed the last scion and heir to the heroes from the original trilogy. If he “gets by his deserts”, all that his family suffered and went through was in vain.
His father sacrificing himself - for nothing.
His uncle - ditto.
But to these fans, Kylo’s miserable death would be the only thing that could still halfway reconcile them with the allegedly disastrous, or at least very unsatisfying, sequel trilogy. If they were “real fans” like they claim, in my opinion they rather ought to pray day and night for Ben’s redemption. If they would dare to look beyond their noses, they would realize that Ben has his uncle’s learning, his father’s slyness, his grandfather’s protectiveness and his mother’s empathy and that these qualities are only waiting for the right spark to ignite inside of him and light the galaxy.
I have my own, personal reasons why I’m hoping for Ben Solo to be redeemed, and I’m going to admit that they are pretty personal.
Yes, I like Ben Solo and I like Adam Driver: not because of their pectorals and arm muscles (although they’re nice to look at 😊) but mostly because I identify with them. I want Ben to change and be happy and I hope for Adam to make a marvelous job of this role. I know he and the rest of the crew won’t be capable to convince everyone, but I do hope that they will make Ben Solo’s character, life and development understandable to as many viewers as possible.
I don’t want Ben Solo to fail and die miserably, unrepentant.
Nor do I want him to become Rey’s pet, only good enough to have kids with her so that she will finally have her own family.
I don’t want Ben Solo to die “because that whiny sissy deserves it”.
I don’t want him to die because he’s sensitive and “a real guy isn’t sensitive”.
I don’t want him to die because “he’s done so much evil and doesn’t deserve to be forgiven.”
I don’t want him to die by Rey’s hand because she’s badass so whatever she does, it’s ok.
I don’t want him to die because “he’s not good-looking so he can’t be the hero”.
I want the last scion of the Skywalker saga, the oversensitive, doubtful, patient, emphatic, funny-looking Ben Solo to prove to the world at large that you can be a hero and find your place in your own place, as a man, even if you don’t come up with any of the common prerequisites for a hero in the common sense of the word.
I want him to show the galaxy and the audience at large that it’s never too late, that you can change, grow beyond your wounds and weaknesses, find your own place among humanity and a happy ever after.
I want him to be a role and an encouragement for everyone like me who is introverted, insecure, thoughtful, sensitive and overall not badass.
For the same reason, I was happy when I saw that my theory that Rey would take a plunge into the Dark Side was founded. Rey is being mistaken by most fans as the true heroine of the saga because we see the story unfold mostly from her point of view, so we tend to identify with her and to overlook the arrogance, stubbornness and aggressiveness that were already hinting at her personal development.
I hope that Episode IX will finally make abundantly clear down to the last fan that even the most pure and intelligent and well-meaning heroine can still go down a dark path. (Louder for the people in the back: Anakin and Ben had all chance to be heroes and they were turned evil by the events around them.)
Tumblr media
I want the Star Wars saga to end on the note “you don’t have to be badass to save the world.”
I want Love to be the triumphant end note.
I want vulnerability and empathy to be portrayed, in this action science-fiction world-wide known saga, as qualities that do not necessarily make you weak but can make you strong if you’re in the right place and employ them in the right way, instead of denying them and secretly admiring who has no qualms with going over corpses.
I know that many, many fans will never have compassion for Vader or Anakin. For some reason, if someone is frightening, they are likely to bow down before him and to think he’s right with everything he does, even killing and torturing.
Most fans hated the prequels’ depiction of Anakin Skywalker because he wasn’t a fearsome person like Vader but so desperately human.
They similarly hate Kylo Ren and wish him to end in the most horrible way because he’s conflicted and suffering instead of “enjoying” his crimes.
I know I’m being mean now: but I really hope that the expectations of these fans for “the badass wins” will explode in their faces when Episode IX comes out.
I predict that countless viewers all over the world will howl to the moon in frustration, claim that Disney ruined the franchise for good and sign petitions to start everything all over again.
But I hope that viewers who are less prejudiced will listen with their heart and find confirmation for what, in Lucas’ own words, the saga is all about: compassion and family.
And I also hope that future generations who will watch the saga on the whole, in particular boys and young men, will grow up with the message that you don’t have to be canonically handsome, formidable, violent and cruel in order to be a hero, but that loyalty and belonging to something bigger than yourself are more important; that a true hero is not someone who saves the world all by himself but who overcomes himself and creates a better place for other people and together with other people.
I don’t need to watch the lonesome hero, the cowboy riding away into the sunset. There are more than enough action films like that. Let Star Wars be a glorious exception for that cliché. I want it to give encouragement to people who, like me, are not cool and badass but for this are not useless, weak and have nothing to give to the world. If the saga ends the way I hope, I will assuredly not sign petitions for some of its chapters to be removed from canon but send George Lucas personally an enormous bouquet of flowers together with a card offering him all of my admiration and gratitude.
Do it for us, Kylo, Ben, Adam, George, please. Show the world that it’s always love that ought to win, not violence. Prove in a convincing way to whoever watches the saga that emotionality and doubts are not weaknesses but virtues, and that you can be a worthy and happy person without being cruel, vicious and creepy. I’m right here rooting for you and waving your flag.
See you in December. 😊

The Force or the Skywalkers? Love or Power? What is this really all about? (a final case on Ben Solo’s fate and the future of Star Wars)
So, you know, the final few weeks, oh it’s all fine, going in open-minded….
It’s all coming out now, isn’t it? (my smug subconscious is smiling rather annoyingly right now)
Tumblr media
I’m getting this all down now because it’s the last opportunity to do so, to speculate about what this means for me, what Star Wars is, and how that determines how I think, if done properly and adhering to this story as a whole, this saga should end. I also preface this by warning that I still believe, if executed well, other endings are well-deserved alternatives too. But look, I’m a fan and as fans we all have our owns feelings towards this work, and it would be hypocritical of me to say I don’t have nagging questions. This doesn’t mean I won’t accept or like the film if it isn’t something along the lines of what I am about to discuss. But I think it is important to be honest with yourself about your own true expectations and at the same time being able to appreciate what has been mulled over and worked over to death by creatives far more experienced than yourself.
Okay…. So now that’s out of the way…
I watched an interview JJ did somewhere recently and The Chosen One featurette, from way back during The Revenge of the Sith.
JJ talked in this interview for TROS, if I remember correctly, about how this story was a nine film saga, and therefore had to conclude the story as a whole and make sense if seen as the final part of this nine part story. He also talked about going back and really seeing what the story was ultimately about, in order to understand how to conclude the story.
And so here I am, questioning myself about what indeed Star Wars is really all about and how that determines the fate of our final Skywalker, Ben Solo.
Of course, on one hand, we can look at this all rather cynically. Disney wants to produce more Star Wars, of course it does, and the idea of concluding the Skywalker saga so they can move on and make their own content is blatantly clear. A passing on of the torch if you like. Skywalker = George Lucas’ material and they want to make their own stuff, make it their own. Makes sense, right?
But then I thought, well, what is Star Wars without the Skywalkers? It seems pretty obvious to me that, for George Lucas, when you talk about Star Wars, you talk about the story of the Skywalkers. When you watch the Chosen One featurette, it’s clear Star Wars = a family soap opera, the center of which consists of the most powerful force family in the galaxy, both victors and victims, whose actions determine the fate of the galaxy. For GL, it’s even more condensed. It is about Darth Vader and his redemption.
What makes Star Wars what it is? Is it the Force? The idea that GL created, a galaxy far, far away with Jedi (good guys) and Sith (bad guys) fighting over a power source which in itself wishes for balance? A little, one might say, like ‘a cinematic universe’, where multiple storylines can be total within this one galaxy? Disney, I feel, does look at it a little like this, and sees the opportunity of telling other stories (like the Mandalorian) where the central themes are still there, moral issues, corruption, power etc. But I feel that doesn’t really explain what makes Star Wars special, what makes it so ‘personal’ to so many people.
Ultimately….. I don’t think this is what Star Wars is. George Lucas is not Tolkien, he’s more like JK Rowling. What I mean to say, is what makes Star Wars George Lucas’ Star Wars, is it’s characters and the conflicts that ensue between them. It is a story about the Skywalkers ultimately, not the Force. The characters are the soul of the story, not the bigger themes at hand.
But is it as simple as that?
If you asked me what I thought, if this was a story about Skywalkers or the Force, which is it that makes Star Wars the iconic phenomenon it is, I would say….. Well, actually both.
Tumblr media
Why? Because the Skywalkers, their whole deal, is about the conflict between power and love. The Force and their bonds. Each being powerful in their own ways, not just with the Force but within the galaxy. Each has had a profound affect within this galaxy, and ultimately their bonds have been destroyed time and again because of a corruption within, because of power getting between their connections with one another. The Force/Power is both their blessing and their curse. And of course, this is no more true than for Kylo Ren/Ben Solo.
And for me, that is what makes Star Wars special. It is this conflict between a family and a greater power, the Force. It is this conflict which makes the story have it’s sense of gravitas and meaning, enveloping so many other major key themes and elements, but distilled this is what it is about. This is what makes Kylo Ren such a great character and therefore one half of the major focus in this trilogy. His connection with Rey is what makes her involuntarily part of this story, despite what Ben said himself in TLJ, she is, ironically, part of all this because of his initial connection with her. And the Skywalkers are all about their connections with their loved ones, despite everything.
We have to return for a minute back to this issue with Disney and the transition made between them and George Lucas. So, I made my case that for GL this is a story about the Skywalkers and how Disney wants to step away from that to make their own path, taking the main ingredients with the galaxy and the Force. It’s funny how this is reflected in the story, because in many ways, Rey represents their future, a Star Wars filled with the unfamiliar, not connected to any already established figures. Kylo Ren is the past, he represents Skywalkers past, the ghost of Darth Vader looming behind him. He wishes to look to the future but is stuck in the past, while Rey wishes to look to the past but is pushed into the future against her will.
This isn’t a question of whether Disney will do this. They will, eventually. I know some remain pessimistic over whether they would have the guts to truly say goodbye to the Skywalker family, but I believe if done properly, this is achievable. As long as they understand what made the Skywalkers so special, I believe they will be able to create similar personal stories exploring the same universal themes in a way that keeps to the same spirit that made the original trilogy so special. And in a way, they have already started this, with the central relationship in this sequel trilogy, between Rey and Kylo Ren. I don’t need to write any more on these two for now, since if you’ve read this far, I’m sure you already have read enough metas to know what makes their dynamic the central story of this particular trilogy and therefore legitimises the existence of this trilogy.
Tumblr media
Speaking of Kylo Ren then, if this is a saga about the conflict between love and power, how does that determine his fate? I thought long and hard about this, about what makes sense when you look at episodes one through eight, at what George Lucas thinks the story is, and what Disney wants out of this too.
It’s my opinion that you need to first of all make a clear distinction here between Kylo Ren and Darth Vader. For GL at least, one to six is about redemption, the chosen one’s redemption through the love for his son.
Will Ben Solo’s story also be about redemption? In a way, yes, I do believe so, because this is a fairytale and needs a happy ending after all. But that is not all. It is not simply because this is a kid’s film and therefore needs a happy conclusion for the Skywalkers. For Ben Solo, it is much more.
Does that mean I think it’s a rehash of Vader’s arc? Absolutely not. Redemption, yes, but that is actually as far as it goes. The distinction between the two, is that Kylo Ren is far more aware of the changes going on within himself compared to Darth Vader. Vader never admitted to an inner conflict within, Kylo Ren can’t shut up about it.
Vader’s choices, or should I say Anakin’s choices, including those he takes in the prequels, are all done with a certain naivety which GL talks about in the Chosen One featurette, as if he is unaware that he is indeed making choices, choices that are coming as a result to the dark side of the Force taking a hold of him. GL makes it clear that Anakin is unaware of this change within himself, his own tragic self-destructive path towards becoming Darth Vader. It is only his final act, when he chooses to save Luke, where GL makes it incredibly clear that this is a choice, a choice he consciously makes. There is a self-awareness that had remained dormant for over six films which finally reawakens.
In comparison, Ben Solo is aware of his choices, even if he is still tragically unaware of his own mistakes and misunderstandings concerning both himself and those around him, a similarity he does share with Anakin. Rey talks of Ben’s choice not being made in TLJ, but by the end of that film, it is clear Kylo Ren made the choice to create a new order and not join Rey. Luke may have set him on his path to becoming Kylo Ren, with Snoke seducing him in the process, but I still see this is a transformation self-imposed to a certain extent, with Ben knowing it is a struggle, a choice he is making, because he feels his family had rejected him, and therefore he cannot remain as Ben Solo, because Ben Solo was rejected by the world. This is a very different story, and despite their similarities, I think it is key to understand these are two very different people, though I know many would disagree. I feel however there is a lot more self-awareness going on with Adam Driver’s performance as Kylo Ren, and I do not believe it is without reason.
So how is this relevant you may say to the conclusion of his story?
Because, Ben has made conscious choices. Darth Vader had not. And what Darth Vader did, was only possible, because he was put in a dire situation, pushed to the edge, forced to make a choice, just as we all must do, when put in life-threatening situations. And to repeat this again, I believe, would be redundant and go against Ben Solo’s arc and the point of his story. What I believe therefore ought to be the final arc to his story, is his realisation of his past mistakes. His choices, his terrible choices, which, despite what happened to him, he made himself. A chance to realise this, is something Darth Vader never had the chance to do because he had gone too far down. I think it’s clear from The Last Jedi that this is not the case for Ben Solo and Rey, quite rightly, recognises this. The final shot between them, and the longing and regret I’d say we see from Kylo Ren, more than proves this.
Ben must realise the terrible mistakes he has made, to learn of his failures, yes, failure most of all, for the greatest teacher, failure is. And who better to help him realise this, than the one who has just learnt this himself, the most important lesson of all in the previous film, a film which is in fact all about failure? Luke’s purpose in TROS would then fit in perfectly, showing true growth in his character and also how TLJ connects with TROS.
Tumblr media
Darth Vader’s arc was about finding himself again, realising he had a choice and making it, redeeming himself in the process. We know from TLJ that the same does not apply for Kylo Ren, we were set up to expect it but it did not happen, so why would it work here, with simply Palpatine replacing Snoke as the bad guy? It doesn’t work in my book.
Having Ben Solo, with the help of Luke Skywalker, realise his failures and come to terms with regret for the past, is part of his journey. Not killing the past, but reconciling with it, just as Luke did in the previous film. And that kind of transformative epiphany does not take place when the love of your life is in danger of being electrocuted by some old creepy dude. It is a redemption of sorts, but one which would make sense for Ben Solo’s character as a self-reflective moment outside of his connection to Rey, rather his connection to his his past, family’s past, their legacy.
And now we come to the million dollar question. Honestly, I will be happy either way come December 18th and either scenario is understandable, but I will tell you why thematically Ben Solo ultimately should live.
We come back to what I think is the theme of Star Wars. The conflict between love and power, right? This conflict is what makes the story interesting, and therefore feeds the necessity I suppose to have nine films revolving around the Skywalkers. So how can it end? This family, if written into the history books of the galaxy, would ultimately be seen as powerful figures who shaped the fate of the galaxy. That is what makes them relevant. Plenty of people in the galaxy I’m sure have problems with sons, daughters, partners just like the Skywalker family do, but we don’t see them on the silver screen because their actions don’t have galactic sized consequences. A minor squabble doesn’t result in a planet exploding or the corruption of a galactic republic. Without the element of the Force or theme of power, it really would just be a regular sized soap opera like GL quite rightly says SW is, an episode of Gary the stormtrooper from Robot Chicken having an tiff with his wife over ‘take your child to work’ day and yelling at his daughter for not resisting Obi Wan’s Mind Probe or whatever but anyway I’m getting wildly off topic and it’s besides the point-
Tumblr media
What I’m getting at is that where there is conflict, must come resolution. The Skywalkers’ conflict between love and power must be resolved. And some resolution it would be, to simply say, well, love and power can never be resolved so inevitably the only thing that can resolve it is death and that puts an end to their conflict and therefore unfortunate influence on the galaxy.
A bit of a bummer… right?
And we can sit here and talk all we like about Rey, but she is not a Skywalker, and although I know she will represent the future of the Force and what I see as a sort of Age of Enlightenment/Renaissance for the force sensitives within the galaxy after this Dark Age which is how I see the Star Wars Saga, that does not mean she can wholly represent the conclusion of the Skywalker story. Ben Solo must be part of that.
So what to do?
Kylo Ren will be Ben Solo again, we all know it. I also believe it should be done in a fashion where it is a conscious decision which he makes, not under any pressures to do so. In doing so, he will resolve the conflict between love and power for his family, because he realises what is truly important and can finally grow beyond his family (we are what they grow beyond) and therefore no longer suffer from what has plagued his family for all these years. He achieves what he had, in fact, always wanted to achieve, to go beyond his family and finally finds balance between the power that resides within himself and his bond with those around him, but most importantly with Rey.
Ben also comes to terms with how destructive and seductive power truly is and how it has destroyed his family and the bonds between them. He symbolically, or if I was writing this, literally, lets go of this, lets go of the Force and steps down, thereby ending the story of how his family had dictated the path of the galaxy, returning to anonymity. With this, the Skywalker story ends, no longer a part of history as they once were, returning to who they initially were, as Kylo Ren says rather arrogantly in TLJ, willingly no longer having a part in this story. They can no longer be taken advantage of by anyone. They have grown beyond.
One final point I would like to say, is Ben Solo of course could be killed after all this. He could turn back as Ben Solo and then be killed, and this would still honour the basic points I have made above, but at the same time, this would be the easy way out. Less nuanced, because again, it suggests death is still the only option because of past mistakes. But that is the only reason, at least that I can think of, to have Ben Solo be killed off at this point. It would not be in service to his redemptive arc, which would already be completed by this point in time (I suggest after an epiphany with a conversation with Luke Skywalker over failure). So what would his death serve, as a purpose to his story? Not much, in my opinion, unlike with Vader where his death was an integral part of his redemption.
And as I have suggested, it is possible to never explore the Skywalkers again, if Disney so chose, by ending it this way, with Ben Solo disappearing into the mists of time. Yet the option of course is always still there for Disney, if they wish it. Best of both worlds. Though in this case, I would wish them not to and simply move on to other stories and new, unexplored places and characters.
Characters that are hopefully just as compelling as the Skywalkers were, with us as listeners still being compelled by stories about good versus evil, the conflict between power and love, with the Force a constant overseeing it all.
Please comment or reblog, as I would love to know what you all think! I had been meaning to say no more, but I felt like there were things here I felt like sharing, a final note on this fantastic saga, before we go see this final installment. Again, I am going in open-minded, these are more musings and what I would want the story to be, but not necessarily expectations. I have no expectations, aside from a cracking good film with a story that is finely executed, whatever that may turn out to be.
