BSD and Shipping

Since Valentine's day was coming I was interested in discussing a huge part of the BSD fandom: Shipping

( ⚠️ RANT INCOMING. DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE EASILY OFFENDED ABOUT OPINIONS ON SHIPPING. PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL TOWARDS OTHER PEOPLE'S OPINIONS IN COMMENTS AND REBLOGS. ⚠️)

So where to start?

For a long time I have been noticing one specific trend in the BSD subreddit. And that are posts that talk about unpopular opinions/Headcanons/fav or least fav ships etc.

What I find interesting about these posts is that one thing is always in the forefront, and it's the debates about the sexualities of the characters in BSD. While Headcanons can be annoying and some people do push their opinions on others, there is nuance that is lacking in the community when discussing some topics. Finding posts about Mori being a pedo and how Dazai is unlikable or overrated is very easy and the discussions surrounding topics like that are always the same. People would pick sides and end up writing a lot about what their opinion is and while that's valid, it also ends up in fandom wars where it's hard to like or dislike something without your head being in the chopping block.

Now let's go to the original topic: shipping. To examine the environment of shipping culture in BSD fandom we have to start with the headcanons that people have adopted for sexualities of the characters.

1. THE PROBLEM WITH HETRO-NORMATIVITY

Now, the posts about shipping often contain a lot of people writing paragraphs and paragraphs about what ships they like or dislike.

One of the ships that takes the most bullets for its existence and popularity is Soukoku or Shin Soukoku. There are lots of comments about these ships that "remind" us that canonically Dazai, Chuuya, Atsushi and Akutagawa are all straight. They should not be shipped with each other because they are straight.....

Dazai flirts with women and wants to commit a double suicide with a beautiful woman. Atsushi is very clearly set up to end up with Lucy. Akutagawa couldn't care less about romance as we see how dismissive he is with Higuchi. And Chuuya.......wears fashionable outfits and has a slutty waist, but we won't comment on that.

Dazai and Chuuya have a lot of queer subtext that anyone can see. Akutagawa and Atsushi are pointed out to complete each other and complement each other several times. These ships don't exist out of thin air.

Now there is nothing WRONG with anyone having the headcanon of any of these (or any other) characters to be straight, after all we are not given enough information about their sexualities. But by stating "Dazai is straight, he likes women" or "this ship doesn't make sense because they are not gay" not only does it imply that characters can't have other preferences but also that being straight is the default, which it isn't.

This is coming from a straight woman from a very conservative country where we don't have exposure to queer media. It took me a long time to stop being so heteronormative. I think assuming someone is straight until they prove to you or tell you directly is just as bad and as assuming someone is gay. I think we have come far along as a community to understand that it shouldn't be our first instinct to assume everything is heterosexual until we get some sort of proof or stamp of approval from its creator.

Asagiri isn't going to stand up in a stage in front of the world and say "yeah Dazai and Chuuya have gay feelings for eachother" because the manga is from Japan. If there were explicit queer characters then BSD would no longer get the label of being universal because of certain censorship laws. Even if it's getting more acceptable in Japan to show queer characters in manga and anime, BSD isn't a romance or slice of life story. It's a seinen, not a BL/GL. Besides, Asagiri shows little to no interest in romantic relationships in his story.

So by saying "______ character is straight because we don't have any other information proving otherwise " isn't a valid excuse to tell shippers not to ship certain characters, it's making it seem like heterosexuality is the default state of being.

That also doesn't mean you can say "Dazai is gay, don't ship him with women" because that's the same thing. If you think Dazai is gay/bi/pan/etc. then that's your opinion, pushing that on others only worsens the rep of skk shippers especially.

You have the right to like or dislike certain ships or have your own Headcanons. This is why even feminising certain characters also isn't as problematic as people call it. It's just a different take on a character (but that time people were correcting those who called Sigma a "he" instead of "they" was genuinely wrong). Headcanons of some random online stranger doesn't make anything canon. So if you find yourself around annoying people like that, just leave the conversation.

2. WHY SUBTEXT MATTERS

Subtext is really important when discussing media; in case of BSD whether it is the anime, manga, anthologies or LNs. BSD is not new to subtext, even from the start of the story there is a lot of queer subtext that people can figure out easily.

When we are introduced to Dazai and Chuuya's partnership in the first season, it's clear as day to see the dynamic and its underlying tension. We can see how close those two are that their relationship can't be explained just as simple partners turned enemies. Time and time again we get so much queer subtext between Skk's interactions. The entire 15 arc and well as Stormbringer shows us the bond and trust between the two as well as the intense amount of gay scenes. At this point I am sure Hoshikawa is a hardcore skk shipper. All of their official art is also gay (that could be queerbating though). Asagiri must know what the public thinks about Skk and still writes subtext about them. It makes sense why this would be a popular ship; it's not made out of thin air with no context (*ahem* Kousano *ahem*) but has actual roots and the proof to back it up too.

SSKK is a similar story, it's not my favourite but it has been growing on me ever since S5. Similar to skk, we get a lot of subtext and homoerotic moments between Aku and Atsushi. They are yin and yang. They are enemies that sought to kill eachother but still team up to fight together. Atsushi is literally the centre of Akutagawa's life since the beginning. Atsushi and Akutagawa grow together as characters and as different as they appear are similarly looking for one thing: validation and acceptance. Their relationship is so compelling in so many levels that it too makes sense why their ship is as popular as it is (especially regarding recent events in the story)

Ranpoe.....let's be real, those two got married a long time ago. They are the definition of "be gay, solve crimes". They are undeniably a cute ship regardless of whether it's one sided or not. Fyolai as well makes complete sense with the context behind Fyodor and Nikolai's relationship, while I also consider it quite one-sided as it's mostly Nikolai that is fascinated by Fyodor (and wants to kiss kill him) Fukumori isn't my cup of tea but it too has enough subtext to back it up, same with FukuFuku.

While I would love to talk about other ships, I wanted to show the reasoning behind the most popular pairings.

Personally, as a multishipper, it's very fun for me to have so many characters to examine and spend time obsessing over.

Now, there are straight ships that I like too as well as ships I don't ship for myself.

The reason I don't like Yosano and Ranpo together is because I see them in the same position as Kyouka and Atsushi. The scene of Ranpo recruiting Yosano (who worked with Mori) into the ADA parallels Atsushi saving Kyouka (who also worked with Mori). I consider them siblings and like how they are platonic instead of it being the typical "a boy and girl can't be besties". Another ship I love and cherish is AtsuLucy because it's so adorable, Lucy is my fav Guild member and her and Atsushi are "Girlboss and Malewife". I ship Tachihara with Gin, Higuchi and Gin as well as Kunikida with Yosano (surprisingly I don't find the appeal of Kunizai; though I still like that ship from time to time, just don't ship it actively). I prefer not to ship Sigma with anyone (he is still a baby to me)

So it's not that BSD doesn't have straight ships, when you make a majority male cast and have them be rivals or enemies, obviously people will ship m/m more. Especially if there is more subtext and tension behind the male characters and they have little to no interactions with women.

And I might get some heat for saying this:

It is okay for most of the BSD characters to be considered queer because if comp het is so normal in anime/manga then why can't the opposite be the case? We already have enough series with little to no representation, so why can't we have a bunch of queer characters?

3. TOXIC SHIPPERS AND THE FALL OF FANDOM CULTURE

I have been raving for the past two sections and defending the shipping community. But it isn't a conversation with nuance if I don't address the problem of a small group of people that take shipping too seriously. The reason why fandom itself gets a bad rep is because of shipping more often than not. I will admit, it's not all sunshine and rainbows when people argue about their fav ships. And a lot of the aforementioned ships are to a point, toxic. Yes, some shippers are annoying and ruin everyone else's fun. There are ships that don't make sense at all.

But that doesn't mean that a small part of people should represent others who are just having harmless fun and don't even believe their ships to ever become canon. Let's be real it's highly unlikely we will have any couples by the end of the show (the closest could be AtsuLucy). Sometimes people are too intense about ships and that goes for both antis and pros. Both of the extreme are toxic. And instead of shoving down our opinions down other people's throats, we should be celebrating the very story that brought us together in the first place.

Yeah it can be hard for those who don't like shipping at all to enjoy the story and have discussions. But we have to remember the roots of fandom culture start with shipping. It's always been the case and it's always been the most popular way to discuss one's favourite fictional work. From Sherlock to Genshin to boy bands to streamers, everything has been shipped and will always be. There is a reason why AO3 works so well.

4. SO WHAT?

The ships are what brought me to BSD in the first place. I wanted to explore the world of BSD because of its characters and their dynamics. And a lot of other people have gotten into this fandom for the exact same reason. While there are unflattering moments in our fandom, that doesn't mean it's not a place for people to come together and have some fun. Whether you ship or not. Whether you like fanfictions or not. We have to accept that there are a lot of pros to shipping too. It brings our ideas together, makes us feel giddy inside or tears our heart apart, it produces beautiful fanarts and fanfictions, it makes us analyse characters, it makes us look deeper into the story....and it makes us wait for what's next to come.

And I want nothing more than to be able to enjoy shipping without the guilt that comes with it.

Shipping isn't free from its flaws, but it is not defined only by its flaws. It might not be for everyone, but it is someone's everything. So even if you don't like it in particular, let's not spoil other people's fun. One's trash is another's treasure.

- you'd be the balance between the two of them, able to compromise in situations to please both of them, and to calm them down from petty arguments.

- they'd do anything for you—including losing an argument because you told them to knock it off—especially since they've known you for so long; you have an unbreakable bond with them, you would protect them with your life, and them, you.

- they're also very in-tune with your emotions, all those microexpressions you have? they can pick them all up, and know exactly which emotion is behind them, even if you try to hide it.

- they care about you a LOT, so if they can tell that you're upset, they'll try to help.

- Wukong is the type to shower you with gifts, or to spend time with you, to take your mind off of it, while Macaque would want to sit down and talk it out with you, offering advice or a shoulder to cry on.

- but they are both very physically affectionate; Wukong moreso, since he has no shame, and Macaque gets a little flustered with PDA.

- behind closed doors, though? they are so CLINGY.

- cuddle piles anyone? of course, it wouldn't just be the three of you—cuddle piles are open to ANY of the monkeys on Flower-Fruit Mountain.

- but there are times where it is just the three of you, embracing each other, quietly enjoying each others' presence.

- this may be an unpopular opinion, but i've always thought of Macaque as a little spoon; he deserves to be held :(

- they would curl their tails around yours and each others, holding each other as close as physically possible, unconsciously purring.

- ..they aren't the best at sharing, though...

- most days start with one of them getting close to you, and the other getting jealous and trying to one-up them by getting even CLOSER to you.

- and if you give one of them a compliment? the other is batting their eyelashes like, "me too, right? i'm better than him anyways, right?"

- this happens, like, everyday, and it always ends with you like, "boys, pls—please, you're both pretty—".

- it may escalate into rough-housing, and you'll get dragged into it, too.

- if it's while you guys are still kids, one of the elder monkeys is gonna drag you each by your ears while scolding you before anything gets destroyed.

- the three of you don't exactly have the 'normal' strength of a monkey..... if you aren't careful, one of you will be thrown into the mountain and cause it to COLLAPSE.

- lets hope that never happens, yeah?

- in modern times, though, you have to be more cautious; especially since there won't be anyone willing to get between the lot of you.

- MK may get dragged into it at some point LOL

- the boy will be minding his own business, when he's suddenly getting HAULED across Flower-Fruit Mountain, with laughter in the distance behind him.

- speaking of the successor, you'd totally end up as a lowkey parental figure to the guy—knowing that he's been dragged through a LOT between the other two mystic monkey's, and feeling somewhat bad about it.

- he's just a lil' guy :(

- back to the past, when Macaque died? you were, obviously, heartbroken, and had to distance yourself from Wukong for a while.

- you couldn't bare to face him after coming across the aftermath of their fight,, and this would make Wukong second guess his life decisions leading up to this moment; not only suffering the loss of killing Macaque, but the loss of YOU in his life.

- after a few centuries, you come back, willing to connect with him again—to which, he is SO grateful, and swears to make it up to you, and to never upset you again, afraid of ever losing you again.

- as happy as you two are together, now, it isn't the same without the third piece to your hearts.

- you're still lowkey mourning Macaque, since you never doubted your love for him, unlike Wukong, who was willing to fight him for threatening Tripitaka.

- but when he's revived? OH boy...

- you weren't happy with his little scheme on MK, but you were willing to put that aside for the moment, overtaken by the overwhelming joy you felt seeing the dark simian alive.

- while Wukong is busy with MK after the fight, you sneak off to find Macaque, concerned.

- by the time you went after him, though, he'd already left through his shadows.

- Macaque has definitely checked up on you, though—through his shadows, just to make sure that you're doing okay.

- he can't lie, he feels upset/betrayed that you're still with Wukong, despite his past actions, but he forgives you after learning that you'd practically ghosted him for a few centuries (and he knew you were too kind to leave him forever, after everything you and Wukong have been through together).

- at some point, you're going to try convincing him to move back to Flower-Fruit Mountain with you and Wukong (even if you have to fight the latter on it), but he'll probably reject the offer until AFTER the Lady Bone Demon has been defeated.

- even then, he won't live directly in the mountain with you, still not being on good terms with Wukong, and will move to a seperate area of the island (which you accept, since it's better than nothing, but you just wish things could go back to the way they used to be with the monkeys you love <//3).

- SPEAKING OF THE LADY BONE DEMON, it hurts you so deeply to see Macaque working for her; neither of you want to fight each other, but obviously you're going to put your trust in Wukong and follow along with his 'plan'.

- Macaque will straight up refuse to genuinely fight with you, going as far to hold you down with shadow clones, or straight up CHUCKING you as far away as possible from the battle, so by the time you've made your way back to everyone, it's over.

- you are totally upset with Wukong when you realised that he didn't really have a solid plan, and THEN you're freaking out over the enemy literally taking control of him.

- first Macaque, now Wukong? can she leave your monkeys alone, please?

- despite the tension between those two, you are DEFINITELY forcing a three-monkey cuddle pile after all is finished.

- they are very passive-aggressive at times; Macaque being flirtatious with you? Wukong's sprinting over, chucking an arm over your shoulder, and raising an eyebrow, "don't you have some scheming to be doing, Macaque?"

- tell Wukong to shut his jealousy hole.

- okay, but after having only you and Wukong for ages, you probably smell PURELY of him; so Macaque is gonna be all over you, trying to even out the scent with his own, since we can't have people assuming that you're ONLY Wukong's, smh.

- but everything goes to shit again after Wukong is pulled into the scroll, and as MK goes to his friends for help, you're running to Macaque in tears, afraid that you're about to lose Wukong after everything.

- and as you're doing that, without your supervision, MK has gone and released Azure Lion while losing all his friends to the scroll, too.

- whoop, whoop! great job, kid.

- obviously you're joining the 'Wukong Rescue Mission', although you are a little suspicious of Azure Lion.

- whether you were a part of the Brotherhood or not—you were still friends with them via your monkeys.

- your heart drops when you see Tang as Tripitaka; you may not have taken part in the journey, but you still knew the guy and made conversation with him time-to-time.

- when Yellowtusk and Peng are released, you have to try not to LOSE YOUR MIND.

- they point you out, like, "ayo? what're you doing here, lover of those monkeys?"

- "ha ha, uh, i gotta go—"

- and when you go through the memories with Macaque and MK :(

- obviously you're in some of them, but it hurts your heart SO MUCH, you stick close to Macaque for comfort; you're secretly wrapping your tails together for support, since you know he isn't great with PDA and MK is right mf'ing there—

- give lots of love to Wukong when everything's said and done, these events would have had a large emotional toll on all three of you, especially with watching the downfall of three people you used to be close friends with, and the trauma Wukong had to witness again.

- okay, but pretending that everything is okay and you all still love each other, and nothing bad ever happened—

- PICNIC DATES at the most scenic spots on the island.

- with a picnic blanket (probably Monkey King branded merch), a basket full of the freshest fruit found on the island, and a jug of peach juice, the three of you set off to the highest point on the mountain; with a full view of the forestry below and the fading sun.

- by the end of it, you're all cuddling under the stars, cockblocked by the monkeys that wanted to join the cuddle pile.

For the Ask Game - Love to hear your thoughts on Xanxus and Squalo

It took me a bit too long but my babies deserve all my undivided attention. So here we are.

Do I ship them? Well. They are my beloveds. One of those OTPs that have been with me for 13? 14? years at this point. The one ship that dragged me back into this fandom and that resides in my head constantly. The amount of scenarios, sagas, headcanons I have about them is outstanding. A bit concerning, maybe. I think about them every night to sleep and I have done so for at least two years. That is the level of brainrot I have. That is how much I love them.

What made you ship it?

Well, they are just them. They're one of thos ships that you don't have to look for. You don't have to invent anything. They are just there, written in the manga for everyone to read. One could say that they are fated, but honestly? They chose each other, and that's one of the most beautiful things. Squalo chose Xanxus when he was 14, and never relented for a moment. He cut off his hand, he grew his hair to an absurd lenght. Waited for him to come back for 8 years not even knowing if it would ever happen and then stayed. What is more touching than such devotion?

Talking about Xanxus... I know we see much less of him in that sense. But even then, we do know that Squalo is the one he cares for the most. We know that in the future arc he was at his grumpiest without his rain. There is much more that can be "made up" about him, but isn't that what makes characters more interesting?

What are your favorite things about the ship?

I think i have already answered this one. I can just add that I love their complementarity. The black and the white one, the loud and the silent one, the outgoing and the introvert one. The crazy one with his life togheter and the other crazy one that needs to figure it all out (don't you tell me Xanxus has anything figured out, please).

It's just them. Unseparable. Dependent on each other to function. Beautiful.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

This one might make me salty. I don't have an unpopular opinion on the ship per se, but more of its perception in the fandom, I guess? I might unwillingly offend someone. But. I truly cannot stand those who make Xanxus the abusive boyfriend and Squalo the poor victim only to then have him fuck someone else. That is the shallowest interpretation of them, and takes away the complex feelings that form their bond. Also, more in general, I am disbelieved too by the fact that so few people seem to get them. Dears. It's all written there. There is nothing to imagine even. Only the part where they kiss and fuck for the rest of their lives. What is so difficult about it. Why am I almost alone on this ship. Uff.

favorite thing about them: i love it when a character has a stoic exterior to hide a warm heart. like he never even told touka and ayato that he was their uncle (at least im pretty sure he didnt, at least not until much later), but he still always looked out for them

least favorite thing about them: hmmm i cant rlly think of one 😭 i guess as with most characters in tg, i would defintely liked to have seen more of him. especially since his kagune is cool as fuck

favorite line: its not really a "line" per se but i like how he's the only one to call kaneki "ken" regularly. since he's a more quiet type, affection doesn't really flow from him easily, and i think if he didn't refer to kaneki that way it might come off a bit like he doesn't care for him, which isn't true

brOTP: uta & itori ofc. i love how they balance him out

OTP/nOTP: combining this to say that i am not necessarily for or against him with uta. i guess i just don't think about it enough to form an opinion

random headcanon: he's either one of those people who doesn't listen to music ever, or he listens to every kind of music

Current Impression

MURDER HOBO, AUTISTIC BASTARD MAN WHO LIKES TO READ AND LIKES TO GAME AND HAS SPECIAL INTERESTS. He has latched on to Dream and will never let go. Touch his friend and Die.

Favorite Moment

He just fucking dropped TNT on those maids and he looked really hot doing it. There's nothing quite as delightful as him logging out right after like it was a Statement. I can imagine him doing a little two fingered salute as he leaves. All the finale stuff was awesome but nothing lives in my mind quite as rent free as the image of some ordinary hoodie gamer boy gently kicking tnt off his little perch to smite the catmaids harassing a giant demigod.

Idea for a story

listen. listen. I have like 300000 stories about him. But if I wanted to write something that wasn't those it'd probably be him running errands around the dsmp. the entire story would start out really average and slice of life but it would slowly get more ominous as his errands stop including blocks and baked goods and saying hi to Niki at the bakery, and start becoming Spying On XYZ, grabbing supplies for the drunz experiment bunker, preparing the traps to catch their latest test subject. Fun stuff like that!

Unpopular Opinion

this implies I know what other peoples opinions are fjghdfk

uhhhhhh I don't think if Dream decided he wanted to forgo The Plan that Punz would get upset and leave him. I think Punz would be really disappointed, but ultimately "being Dream's friend" and "being a bloodthirsty murder hobo who longs for godhood" are not mutually exclusive things. I've seen a couple of fics handle it really well, and I adore the conflict of Punz caring about Dream but also disagreeing with Dream's desire to make nice and do peace when it comes up, because Punz just. Doesn't have faith in humanity. Punz has the people he cares about, and everyone else can go to hell.

Favorite relationship

I'm the usual sucker for Drunz. If that's too obvious, then Punz and Foolish also makes me really happy, along with Punz and Sapnap and maybe Punz and Techno? You can get a lot of mileage out of Punz's surface nature of being really easy going while hiding a lot of anger and bitterness, even misanthropy if you want to lean really deeply into it.

Actually, wait, a friendship I really like to think about but don't often get to talk about is Punz and Niki. Niki goes through a disillusionment in her character arc that I think Punz could really understand. Punz would be cheering on her villain arc, but the thing that Punz doesn't get that Niki does is an opportunity through the Syndicate to find faith again, faith in her friends, in hope and humanity.

Niki and Punz could have a lot of interesting conversations, she could even give him an offer to join the Syndicate. I can see her reaching out to him the way she was reached out to, if only to try. I can't say whether or not Punz would take that offer, its entirely dependent on what story you're writing, but as easily as I think they could see each other in the darkness, I think they could see each other in the light, too.

Favorite headcanon

Punz is autistic. Listen to me. He fixates of his Special Interests and he loves to have Opinions About Things and he is a stickler for things being On Time and Done The Right Way. I'm projecting my mental illness on to him. I just want him to complain endlessly about books and have a favorite genre and have an eye for the quality of metalwork because my mom was a goldsmith and Punz wears jewelry. Let me have my insane man.

First impression

So I'd heard that SecUnit Three was the second rogue SecUnit we met, and when I got to the dock fight in Exit Strategy i thought that Hostile Three, one of the two SecUnits deployed with the CSU, was the Three everyone was talking about XD

When I got to Three for real, i was like HEYY HERE YOU ARE!! I think the thing that hit me the hardest in its first conversation with 2.0 was that little pause before "Thank you for that information" when 2.0 tells it Two is dead. That was an Oh. moment for me. It's doing it's best but it just lost someone it cared about :(

Precious!! Sweet!! Sad :( It is having SUCH a time. It lost its two best friends, its entire world, and any semblance of protocol to guide it in one fell swoop. Given all that, it's doing an admirable job, but It's gonna be a while before it really settles into itself. I think even underneath the people-pleasing search for protocols to follow, it's sweet and wants to be helpful. It wants to be friends with Murderbot (more than Murderbot wants to be friends with it). It misses One and Two.

Favorite moment

"There is a lot going on here that I don't understand, but I am participating anyway." Iconic line, sums up its character in a single sentence. Confused, but wants to help. Also, a mood.

Idea for a story

Ages ago, I started writing a time-travel fix-it where Three gets thrown into the past just in time to save One and Two. I needed the pure catharsis of it getting a second chance to protect them <3 I stalled out on it a while ago, but System Collapse did give me some new ideas....

Unpopular opinion

When SC came out everyone jumped on that one line at the end where MB tells Holism to talk to Three! I did not read anything significant into that when I saw it, and was pretty startled when I found so many people taking it as "MB set Three up with Holism and now Holism is gonna have its own rogue SecUnit companion." I will admit that that's probably where Wells is going with it, more or less, but honestly it doesn't excite me like it does other people. I knew Three was likely to get written off-stage, but I'd rather have a bit more time with it interacting with characters we know!

Favorite relationship

One & Two & Three :') I love speculating about what their interactions were like. The tension of caring about someone but being literally unable to tell them...losing them right before gaining your freedom, and knowing you'll never know who they would have been if they were free....this is why I had to write the time travel fic!

Favorite headcanon

The friendship was mutual!!! I go back and forth on whether I think One, Two & Three were able to communicate that to each other in small ways, or if they each had to live in the tension of not knowing. Even though the latter is now confirmed by canon (on Three's end), I'm still partial to the former.

3. Favourite character outside the main seven

Tim Shepard! I feel like Hinton threw mentions of him and Curly in there as a sort of foil to Darry and Ponyboy's dynamic but I have SOOOO many headcanons about him (and Curly and Angela too).

PS. The only reason I said Tim and not Angela is because she's not technically mentioned in the book. Angela is my favourite outsiders universe character ever and since theres not enough content for her I've decided I have to make my own lmao

4. Rank the main seven

OOF omg ok this was a hard one

First, Steve. Probably seems really random and unpopular but I feel like theres so much depth to his character that there just wasn't enough book to provide. We know he has a rough background and a soft spot for Sodapop and that Ponyboy's narration of him is biased since he thinks Steve doesn't like him. Tbh tho I think Steve really does care about Ponyboy in his own way, it's just hard for Ponyboy (and probably a lot of younger readers to see). My love of Steve was kind of an evolution but I can firmly say he's my favourite out of the gang atp.

Second, Darry. My man was a 20 y/o whose parent died who had to give up on his dreams to raise two younger brothers who he loved so much the feelings bled off the page. He NEVER should have hit ponyboy and it was such an out of character moment for him- AS IT WAS INTENDED TO BE. I have a LOT of thoughts about him but as someone who has grown that I'm almost the same age as him I cant IMAGINE having gone through what he went through and dealt with it as well as he did. My man needs more recognition.

Third, Ponyboy. He's such a dumbass and a weirdo but so reltable and sarcastic and profound. He's a main character who never gets in the way of other main characters and he's so quintessentially 13 that reading his story when I was that age fundamentally altered my brain chemistry and I haven't been the same since.

Fourth, Johnny. He was the gangs favourite for a reason and such a good friend to Ponyboy. I feel like the fandom infantilizes him sometimes, which is partially due to Ponyboy's narration, but the book makes it clear he's a really tough kid who looks like trouble but isn't. He's such a prime example of how the lottery of birth can fuck up someone's life. He is so tragic to me because he never had a chance.

Fifth, Sodapop. I know he's a fan favourite and I'm not saying I don't like him, but he's just kind of...boring? imo. Like, not much there, and not as much depth as some of the other characters. maybe its because we see a lot more of him in Ponyboy's thoughts but I'm not curious about him the way I am about some of the others.

Sixth, Dally. He's not likeable- but he is, as johnny said, gallant. I know it was by design that he's mysterious but I wish we got more backstory for him. I've just never connected to him the way I connected to other characters.

Seventh, Two-Bit. Again, probably unpopular and I know he's a fandom favourite but to me his issues have always jumped out more than his redeeming qualities. His alcoholism is a hallmark of his character, and i think at one point Ponyboy mentions he's a dead weight on his family's finances. He also has a little sister that's Ponyboy's age thats mentioned like once? I just feel like he's kind of a deadbeat for his family if that makes sense.

7. Favourite non romantic relationships. i could (and probably should atp, whoops this got long) make a whole other post about this but:

9. Favourite scene/moment from the book?

When Ponyboy runs directly into Darry's arms as soon as he sees him at the hospital. Gets me right in the feels every time.

Bonus: the moment when that guy tells Ponyboy he shoudn't smoke and he's all confused, like why? theres not a no smoking sign? and the dude is just like uh? but youre a kid? it's just such a stark reminder that while Ponyboy has grown up sheltered in some ways he has absolutely not been in others and his background is really rough and agh it gets me every time its such a clever scene.

First impression: I remember liking Duster a lot when I first played M3. The way the game gets you into his perspective at the start of Chapter 2 is really impactful… Wess shouting at him and degrading him, while he just loyally stands there and takes it without a fuss. And the care with which he's animated - always limping (even in his Pigmask disguise), takin' a deep breath before using Wall Staples, spinnin' his bass around when he performs - was endearing & impressive from day 1. I don't recall having any profound thoughts or headcanons about him, but I was glad to play with such a unique party member!

Impression now: I fuckin' love him. A man of such humble highs and lows. He goes from being a cooped-up undersocialized abuse victim to a rockstar celebrity to a world-saving hero, and does it all in the most gentle unassuming manner imaginable. What I think is most special & sad & remarkable about Duster is how painstakingly selfless he is. Dude who will drop literally everything on the spot to do what's asked of him, to help a neighbor in need, to look after a kid who needs him. Putting everyone else first, to such an admirable extent - and to such a dramatic fault. He was denied any sense of self worth growing up, which creates this fascinating & tragic double-edge. He doesn't know how to be kind to himself, but by god, he'll do right by others even if it kills him.

Favorite moment: When he plays with DCMC one last time at New Pork City. It's loads of fun, and so fucking sweet. His bandmates are overjoyed to see him, Lucas & Kuma are delighted to hear him perform again, everyone's gathered to listen. OJ tells him afterwards they could never replace him - DCMC's not complete without its bassist. I imagine he starts to realize here how genuinely loved he is. That he's not just a vessel for positive action, but a crucial part of the communities he loves! And a beloved & worthy person in his own right!!

Idea for a story: There is something very existentially haunting about how Duster's the only Tazmilian who's had his memories wiped twice. Dude's lived three separate lives - four if the post-amnesiac epic adventure Duster we play with from Chapter 5 onwards counts as another. I gotta wonder how he reconciles his identity, especially after (presumably) recovering his White Ship memories sometime postgame. I like to imagine he's content to settle down as a musician first n' foremost, donning his stage name when he performs. But god knows what kinda horrors he witnessed, growing up in a world on the brink of apocalypse. And how he might convey this to his bandmates, who must have their own wild timetravel backstories to grapple with. And how he settles back into a village where he used to be a total black sheep. And how he carves out a new life for himself as an independent adult, after Wess deprived him of agency for so long. Just seems like there's a quite a few disparate Dusters for future Duster to sort out!

Unpopular opinion: My man is thirty or forty years old. Can scarcely fathom him younger. I put him at 37 post-timeskip, myself.

Favorite relationship: Hard to place which is my favorite, so I'll do a few. His situation with Wess makes me ache so bad. Some folks interpret Wess more charitably, which I can see & respect, but I personally read him as pretty explicitly abusive. The fact Wess does have commendable traits too, though, and that he & Duster do seem to care for each other deep down, complicates things in such a realistic way. Duster's not the sorta person to write off his aging father, despite how badly Wess has hurt him and let him down. Wess does love his son, but might be too stubborn to truly change his ways. Where do they go from there? Who's to say, but it makes my chest hurt. I love to imagine the way Duster treats Lucas & Kuma is in stark contrast to his upbringing. That he's endlessly patient with these kids, even at their weakest and worst. 'Cause he knows exactly how it feels to be berated & chastised for failure. I also think his time with DCMC feeds into that. Like, they taught him to play bass n' perform n' everything - surely it didn't come easy for an amnesiac with no prior social skills or musical talents. He learned patience and care from them. The thought of his new friends treating him gently for the first time, and Duster not remembering any other life, is so fuckin' sweet to me. Agh.

Favorite headcanon: He likes wearing Hawaiian shirts. He's dating OJ - let these gay men be mundane, middle-aged, and schlubby as hell. His postgame hobbies include sailing and, yes, again, smoking mad pot.

My first impression: “Oh who’s that guy again? Eh I’ll just look him up. Oh hey that one- WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED??” Other than that I basically just didn’t care about him cause I just wanted to get back to Kaneki.

My impression now: I love him so much he’s my little guy he’s so silly I want to run him through a meat grinder he means the world to me he is my world he deserves the world he’s ruined my life and made it better and I love him for it <33

Favourite thing about that character: Assuming I can’t say everything uh I love the irony of his character. Becoming everything you hated. Getting everything you wanted superficially but losing the reasons you wanted it in the first place. All that good stuff.

Least favourite thing: His ending :( “oh he disappeared and was never seen again and fought rogue ghouls as a half-kakuja-“ NO. FUCK NO. AFTER EVERYTHING HES BEEN THROUGH HE IS NOT GETTING THAT SHITTY OF AN ENDING. HE SHOULDNT HAVE TO BE INVOLVED IN THIS BULLSHIT ANYMORE HE SHOULD BE LIVING A NICE PEACEFUL LIFE WITH HIS LOVED ONES.

Favourite line/scene: Uh, god there's a lot to choose from... Honourable mention to his little speech about fear (mainly because it's so funny in context "oh you're scared of me cause I'm different" no I think its because you murdered their coworkers in front of them but go off ig). My favourite probably has to be his internal dialogue during the fight with Amon in the lab raid arc, a ton of great lines in there. But I also love every scene he's in so y'know.

Favourite interaction that character has with another: Probably his fight with Amon during Rushima and then his moment with Akira after. Gives me brainworms.

A character that I wish that character would interact with more: Shikorae! They may have only had one on-screen interaction but they are FRIENDS I swear. Also just the rest of Aogiri in general. I wanna see how this crazed ex-dove fits in with the rest of their organization.

Another character from another fandom that reminds me of that character: Uh... human Takizawa kinda reminds me of Matsuda from Death Note but that's all I've got.

A headcanon about that character: He adores boy band pop but is incredibly embarrassed about it. His sister likes the same bands as him and he always acts annoyed that he's being "forced" to go to concerts with her but he secretly begs her to buy tickets for him too. He has an ARASHI poster in his bedroom. Hide introduced him to Backstreet Boys and they listened to it together sometimes before, well, y'know.

A song that reminds of that character: I’ve got a few but I’m gonna go with The Mind Electric. Idk I think it fits his mental state pretty well and also a lot of lyrics could tie into parts of his character. Also quick shoutout to the Demo 4 version cause the “see how I laugh at you” part reminds me of that one scene with Ayato.

An unpopular opinion about that character: Don't have one really

I have two headcanons that make me go insane anytime I think about it.

(Actually pretty much all of my hcs but these are the ones that I think about most recently)

-Tar-Mirel as the Witch-King of Angmar. I'm pretty sure everyone who has read my writing knows how much I love the idea, considering I wrote two fanfics about it already. The hc is impossible considering the timelines, but I don't care what people say. Tar-Mirel is one of my favorite characters and the I am a sucker for corruption tropes so having both of them together is like the cherry on top. Anytime I'm reading the books of watching the movies, when the witch king appears I'm always like "That's Mirel!"

-This one is more personal-which is my trans Celegorm au. I feel like it matches him so well, its so unexplainable. He is so transmasc in my head, its crazy. Cis Celegorm does not exist to me. Obviously this one is a little more unpopular but I'm trying to spread the agenda 💪

Impression now: I was one hundred percent correct in my assumptions. He did in fact ruin me. This man has the range honestly. He is kind. He is an asshole. He is traumatised. He has every subtype of daddy issues known to man. He is a bitchy gay queen. He is aroace-spec (to me). He is autistic. He has NO idea what to do with himself when he is not in a courtroom. He is insane. Ive seen it. I enjoy it. Amen.

Favourite moment: "thanks to you i am saddled with unnecessary.... feelings....". Everything about turnabout goodbyes. The talk with Franziska at the end of aa2. The talk with phoenix after the earthquake in aa3. I could literally never pick Just One moment sorry.

Idea for a story: ... I've brainstormed two (2) aus that involve Edgeworth with two different mutuals. The first one is the Eurovision au where vk just sends miles to represent germany in Eurovision and the second one is the ace attorney/παρά πέντε crossover me and @alalumin have been driving ourselves insane over. Out of the two, the first one is the most fleshed out but the second one i might actually sit down and write for one day. Thats about all the concrete story ideas ive had for this man so far dkskks. Everything else is just a jumble of vague angsty daydreams.

Unpopular opinion: hmmm a lot of people tend to ignore the fact that he was canonically suicidal after aa1 so i suppose that could count as an unpopular opinion? Like if he wasn't actually suicidal, the note meant that he straight up faked his death which makes him an even bigger asshole that he usually is, which in turn makes phoenix's misdirected anger and blame seem a lot more justified? Also a lot of people tend to ignore the fact that phoenix would NOT handle Edgeworth admitting that he meant the note literally well. And honestly im not really blaming anyone here. Their aa2 dynamic is sooo complex, Edgeworth hurt the people that cared about him by hurting himself and not all of them are ready to forgive him immediately and thats fine. I just wish more people would explore this whole thing instead of oversimplifying it yknow?

Favourite relationship: narumitsu obvs but honestly? The Franziska and Miles fucked up sibling relationship means the world to me, its like a really really really close second.

Favourite headcanon: does it actually count as a headcanon if its strongly supported by canon? Idk but he definitely avoids elevators as much as he can and considering that his office is in the twelfth fucking floor the man walks up a lot of flights of stairs. He must have thighs of steel skkskaka. Also i like to think that at some point after the investigation games he went to therapy and he finally (!) got some help for that unmedicated and undiagnosed canon ptsd hes been drowning in since he was nine years old. Also he got Pess because i love her. Maybe she is trained as a service dog. He would love her with all his heart and her death would kickstart a major depressive episode because god knows this man can't handle grief but in the end he could get over it. Maybe even get a second dog or learn how to deal with loss in a less self destructive way. Also i don't think he would ever be able to fully enjoy Christmas? Like sure his fathers death doesn't hurt as much anymore but i like to think that the nightmares rear their ugly head during the Christmas season. Sure, he IS doing better but some things never really go away. He can hang out at the prosecutors office or Wright anything agency Christmas parties without feeling utterly miserable but he doesn't enjoy the holidays as much as everyone else. Some people don't understand why or think thats its just another aspect of his charming personality but the people who do are sympathetic about it.

First impression: γουαου ποιός είναι αυτός ο μαλάκας λολ. Ειλικρινά νομίζω την πρώτη φορά που είδα το παρά πέντε δεν με ένοιαζε πολύ σαν χαρακτήρας.

Impression now: κοίτα. Έχεις δει το μπλογκ μου. Ξέρεις πως νιώθω για αυτόν τον άνθρωπο. Ο Ανδρέας έχει θεματάρες. Έχει παγιδεύσει τον εαυτό του σε μια θέση στην οποία είναι και θύμα και θύτης και από την οποία δεν έχει τρόπο ή ιδιαίτερη θέληση να βγει. Κατά την διάρκεια του σόου πηγαίνει από την αδιαφορία για τους ανθρώπους που σκοτώνει, στην εμμονή με το να πιάσει τους πέντε και μόνο όταν τον συλλαμβάνουν και όλα τελειώνουν συνηδειτοποιεί πόσο μάταια ήταν όλα αυτά και πόσες ζωές έχει καταστρέψει συμπεριλαμβανομένης και της δικής του. Επίσης ο άνθρωπος είναι μούναρος 😔😔.

Favourite moment: το τηλεφώνημα στον Σπύρο στο φινάλε με στοιχειώνει τα βράδια.

Idea for a story: πέρα από το ο Σπύρος επισκέπτεται τον Ανδρέα στη φυλακή fic που βρίσκεται αυτή τη στιγμή στο wip hell μου έχει καρφωθεί στο μυαλό εκείνη η ατάκα που ο Παυρινός αποκαλεί τον Νίκο πρεζόνι και το τι μπορεί να υπονοεί για το Ανδρέας/Νίκος μπακστορι. Επίσης εκείνο το όνειρο που είχα δει ότι έχει κόρη και redemption arc, angst fic για την γενική κακομεταχείριση που τρώει από τον Παυρινό, το Ανδρέας/Νίκος καφενείο au το οποίο κάποιος πρέπει να γράψει σας εκλιπαρώ και το προαναφερόμενο ace attorney/παρά πέντε crossover στο οποίο εμφανίζεται ως μάρτυρας στην δίκη της Αγγέλας. Το πόσα από αυτά θα καταλήξω όντως να γράψω ποτέ είναι πολύ αμφιλεγόμενο τβχ αλλά το γεγονός είναι ότι μου τριβελίζουν συνέχεια το μυαλό.

Unpopular opinion: δεν ξέρω είμαστε στο παρά πέντε φάντομ, είμαστε δέκα άτομα όλα κι όλα κάθε άποψη μετράει για unpopular κσκσκσ. Αλλά απλά και μόνο για να πω κάτι. Νομίζω όντως προσπάθησε να αγαπήσει τη Ζάνα. Στο μυαλό μου ήταν από αυτά τα ζευγάρια που έχουν ημερομηνία λήξης και το ήξεραν και οι δύο. Μετά έπεσε στα βαθιά με τις δουλειές με τον Παυρινό και πήρανε επιτέλους διαζύγιο. Επίσης δεν νομίζω ότι με τον Νίκο τα έχουνε, έχουνε. Νομίζω έχουν μια ελαφρώς fucked up relationship όπου δεν επικοινωνούν τίποτα εβερ, απλά πηδιουνται περιστασιακά on and off και μετά απλά πηγαίνουν και τα φτιάχνουν με άλλους. Τουλάχιστον στην αρχή. Τώρα αν μετά το τέλος της σειράς βγουν ποτέ από την φυλακή θέλω να πιστεύω ότι θα μπορούσαν να φτιάξουν λίγο τη ζωή τους αλλά αν δεν βγουν ποτέ. Well. Πώς νιώθεις όταν συνηδειτοποιείς ότι αγαπούσες τον καλύτερο σου φίλο χρόνια τώρα αλλά δεν έκανες ποτέ τίποτα για αυτό επειδή απλά δεν τολμούσες να αλλάξεις τίποτα στην μοναδική σταθερή σχέση που σου είχε απομείνει στη ζωή σου και ταυτόχρονα ήσουν πολύ απασχολημένος να σκοτώνεις κόσμο; Πώς νιώθεις όταν συνηδειτοποιείς ότι τώρα μπορεί να είναι πια πολύ αργά; Γενικά head full many thoughts.

Favourite headcanon: ναιιι δεν νομίζω ότι αυτός ο άνθρωπος είχε καλά παιδικά χρόνια. Ή καλό πατέρα. Ο Παυρινός κυριολεκτικά του πετάει πράγματα και αυτός ο καημένος σκύβει να τα πιάσει 😔 babyboy έχεις τραύμα. Η μάνα του είναι νεκρή (ναι κυριολεκτικά αναφέρεται έτσι throwaway σε ένα επεισόδιο και δεν το έχω ξεχάσει ποτέ) και επιλέγω να πιστεύω ότι την σκότωσε ο πατέρας του. Μισεί τον πατέρα του και κατά βάθος μισεί και το γεγονός ότι μεγαλώνοντας έχει γίνει σχεδόν ακριβώς σαν αυτόν. Ξεκίνησε να καπνίζει στο γυμνάσιο. Επίσης δεν πιστεύω ότι τελείωσε ποτέ το λύκειο.

First impression: "oh my god, they really did write him like that" I'll be honest, I did not believe my friend when they told me about Knock Out catcalling Optimus in his first episode but god he really did.

Impression now: I can *slaps the hood of his alt* fit so many feelings, emotions, trauma, love in this bad boy.

Favorite moment: hmmmmmmmm what to pick....this is cheating because its my favorite tfp scene in general BUT its the scene with Knock Out and Starscream trying to convince Soundwave to pull the plug on Megatron. There is something so beautiful and horrible about them lying with the monitor showing he is still fully there. I don't know. It changed me.

Idea for a story: ihavesomanysoi'llpickoneiprobablywontbewriting. I have an idea for a fic of him and Breakdown meeting for the first time, before the war, on Velocitron. I actually started writing it like a year ago but its so out of character and I don't love it so its been scrapped and probably abandoned. The premise was Knock Out just having a one night stand with Breakdown with the assumption of "oh he just wants to say he's gotten with a racer, thinks I'm superficial blah blah blah" except Breakdown doesn't care about any of that and is just really sweet and Knock Out having to experience his first emotional relationship.

Unpopular opinion: hmm hmm hmm do i have any? i tend to agree with most of them? I will say, its not often we see softer, pining Knock Out and I personally love the idea of him being very smitten with Breakdown (i do have a wip for it winkwinkwink)

Favorite relationship: obviously him and Breakdown omgomgomgomg. but, platonically (maybe??) I love whatever he's got going on with Starscream. Clearly, they don't trust each other at all and want to use each other, but on the other hand, they get each other and find genuine enjoyment out of each other. I think they are goofy.

Favorite headcanon: i have so many god uhhh- his obsession with human culture which is already a canonical thing in the show, but I like extending it to cultural things he learns from movies and shows and trying to implement it into his own life despite it being very un-Cybertronian.

My first impression: the reason i got into tg as much as i did. before i watched i hadnt watched a whole series since i watched death note bc i couldn't find a main character that was as interesting to me as light...and then i found KANEKI

My impression now: i still love him, especially once i read the manga. similar to how i was w death note, i haven't been able to get through another series since tg bc i can't find another mc that interests me as much as kaneki or light. he's so cool and fucked up what a silly guy

Favorite thing about that character: i love when they're insane (pt 400049589208520). i also feel like aggravatingly similar to him sometimes so that's always fun. analyzing him is like analyzing myself

Least favorite thing: analyzing him is like analyzing myself. also anime kaneki is...not as badass as manga kaneki lets leave it at that...

Favorite line/scene: where do i even start...ig this is more of a haise moment but it's also a kaneki moment lowkey at the beginning of re when he's going against nishio and haise is like losing his shit and brain kaneki is whispering in his ear yeah that was so cool and sent chills down me idk. also when he broke half of ayato's bones what a sick lil dude i love it

Favorite interaction that character has with another: back to the beginning of re when haise kinda switches into the kaneki personality when he's going against nishio and he says "i don't think you want to know me" and does the finger crack ooooh lemme tell you i was kicking my feet in bed at 4am watching that bc first i was like ohh its kaneki (as we know the anime doesn't explain shit) and then i was like if i was nishio i would run away bc that was so scary ooooh i love it

A character that I wish that character would interact with more: i think we needed more kaneki and hide interactions like i know we got a decent amount but like. there should have been more.

Another character from another fandom that reminds me of that character: im so bad at this ummm mello from death note bc the world beats them down and tells them theyre not good enough throughout their childhoods, so they grow up with this idea that they're always inferior and it eventually turns into rage but also a deep incurable loneliness. and if you go with the theory that kaneki actually died and was not saved by ayato at the end of the series (which i enjoy bc i love pain and suffering), then they both die alone unable to protect those they care for or fulfill what they think they're life's purpose is okay im gonna go cry now

this was so hard because ishida's art is beautiful, but this had to be it. this kinda encompasses everything i love about ishida's art - the portrayal of emotion, the use of ink heavy pages to show tension and conflict, the despair, like its just so good
