this interaction: a short analysis because i'm so insane about this

so first of all, i want to hit on the fact that dick and bruce have a thing for using names at certain points, taking off/keeping on masks during interactions etc that hold a lot of meaning to each other. a good example of this is batman #416, where dick and bruce argue about jason becoming robin. during this time, dick immediately takes off his mask and demands that bruce takes off his cowl as well. it's shown in a 3 panel sequence that bruce is hesitant, but takes it off as the argument becomes more personal and bruce becomes more vulnerable.

to dick, arguing with batman is different than arguing with bruce. he knows that bruce uses the cowl as a form of protection to not have to face emotional vulnerability. almost immediately after he takes it off, he becomes stoic at first, then angry, then admits the real reason he wanted a new partner (being that he missed dick). notice how he calls dick 'nightwing' during this, even without masks and cowls. he doesn't want to face the fact that dick isn't his partner anymore and is ashamed that he admitted it in the first place. he tries to shift the tone of the conversation back to professionalism (and fails) because of that. meanwhile, dick has been calling him 'bruce' throughout the whole thing, almost calling him out for that, but also because he wants the truth, which is personal to him.

anyway bringing this back to the panel from a lonely place of dying. jason has BEEN robin. jason has died already. his first response when he hears dick? "robin". after they had that whole conversation in batman #416 where he was able to keep the name nightwing fresh in his head. jason's death has put him so far out of focus that he's literally reverted to hearing dick and thinking of the name 'robin'... its so over for me. anyway i don't know if i worded half of that correctly enough to get my point across but these panels bring me so much pain

Ok so about your grumbo monster apocalypse au

(This got away from me a little bit but I’m kind of obsessed? Thanks)

I’ve been rotating it for a bit and I have this idea in my head where Mumbo finally decides to leave and grian’s like “wait no I have to say goodbye” but before he can he notices a monster sneaking up on mumbo and kills it. Mumbo didn’t notice and continues moving forward. So grian keeps following him farther and farther away, but he just gets so caught up in killing the monsters approaching mumbo that he realizes he’s been led too far away from home and wouldn’t be able to make it back on his own. Plus, he figures mumbo would be pretty mad if he discovered how long Grian’s been following him for. So he just keeps secretly following mumbo and killing all the monsters around him, with mumbo completely unaware that he is being followed and pleasantly surprised by how few monsters he’s encountered.

Eventually he makes it to a civilization of survivors. They welcome him in (though they are all a little surprised on how he’s made it this far). He doesn’t tell them about grian. Grian, meanwhile, continues killing monsters around the outskirts of the civilization, not really having anything better to do. There’s a joke going around the settlement that mumbo is good luck, since monster attacks have gone way down since he joined. Mumbo figures it’s a coincidence, and is just happy that for the first time in a while he can be of use, setting up broadcast systems and repairing electronics and such.

One night, a group goes out on patrol, making sure that no monsters sneak in, when they come across grian, who’s finishing off some poor beast of darkness a little closer to camp than usual. In a panic over being discovered, he shifts into the only thing he can think of: Mumbo.

a group of survivors, hm? looks at xisuma and some of the hermits. yeah i think i could make that work.

this would take place after a certain other huge event that I have not talked about- but perhaps in an alternate timeline where that event goes horribly worse than it does in mine and ange's canon, since the event as we have it brings grian and mumbo much closer together...

it could happen before that event, also... hmmmm...

(the event, in brief, involves mumbo having a big breakdown about the apocalypse and running away- prompting grian to have his own breakdown about not fitting in to human or monster community anymore- involving mimicking mumbo's cries to himself and pearl trying + failing to calm him down. mumbo does return eventually, it's a whole thing)

now my brain is swarming with ideas. LOL

but it does track, grian's species is known to mimic not only people they are replacing, but also each other as a way of communicating and showing love. grian learns a lot about how to emote like a human from mumbo, and tries to look more human for mumbo, so it would make sense that the first safe form he would choose wouldn't be his own human-ish form, but one resembling mumbo himself.

though it would be obvious to the others that grian 1. is not mumbo and 2. is not human, because he is like a walking uncanny valley...

hopefully they wouldn't try to kill him on sight though

scar’s skin was dry, in the heat of the desert sun, it was tinged red and a little bit warm. it was comforting under the callouses of grian’s hands, weathered and worn, with grains of sand stuck to lines of his palms.
