And you know the ones I mean:

Shido, we can see right up your nose. But let's talk about the text on these. First, the really big bit on the left:

獅童正義 shidou masayoshi

Look at the kanji there. His given name is twice the size of his family name. Plus, his given name doesn't have the furigana (tiny text to tell you how to read it) that you can see against his family name—despite it being easily misread as a common noun.

Because, as eny fule kno, Shido's given name is spelled the same way as 正義 seigi, meaning "justice". This will be important later. The game lampshades this, by the way, in gossip chats around the election:

"Shido-san really lives up to what his name means. He's like justice personified." Okay, gossiping person, you do you.

At the bottom, in tinytext next to his spooky Illuminati-esque Whole World In His Hands logo that isn't megalomaniacal at all, we have the name of his new splinter party:

未来連合 mirai rengou United Future

未来 mirai means future; 連合 rengou means a bloc, a coalition, an alliance or union. 連合ヨーロッパ rengou yooroppa, "a federal Europe"; 連合国 rengoukoku, "the Allied powers". So we get "United Future", perhaps less catchily "The Alliance for the Future", which is very much the sort of name new Japanese political parties tend to have.

what about that other bit

Hahaha, you mean this little thing?

This is Shadow Shido's slogan. This sums up his mission, his motive, the whole reason he wants power. And what does it say?

私のために、民衆は尽くす watashi no tame ni, minshuu wa tsukusu The people will serve me.

What a nice thing to say! What an excellent sentiment, befitting of a public servant in a democracy! And what an unashamed piece of shit, eh? You can see why Japan is underwater in his head.

Constructions of the form X no tame ni tsukusu are quite common; my dictionary lists several. So this little phrase is a play on words in at least two ways:

First of all, it's an adaptation of a well-known phrase, 民衆のために尽くす minshuu no tame ni tsukusu, "to serve the people". Shido has taken this and inverted it: the people will serve him.

But second—remember how Shido's given name, Masayoshi, is written the same way as seigi, meaning "justice"? One of those common little example phrases in my dictionary, under tsukusu, is the following:

正義のために尽くす seigi no tame ni tsukusu to work for justice

This is why his given name is in massive letters on the poster: because this play on words is deliberate on his part: Shido is justice, as his name should tell you; he defines what is good and right and true—and what's good and right and true is what is in his interests. And so the people will serve him. The same way they'd serve the nation, or society, or the public good.

It's a really interesting line. And, of course, it calls to mind Akechi—supposedly a detective, in the service of justice, and yet in reality....

BTW, don't forget this is Shido's Shadow talking. How much does Shido himself, the guy walking about upstairs, delude himself about all this? That's an exercise for the reader.

DP AU where Phantom feels no pain but any and all accumulated injuries hit him when Danny switches back to fenton (originally proposed by @paenling). Lovingly dubbed the Pain Train AU by The discord.

Okay so headcannons we have come up with:

-Danny avoids switching to Phantom at all costs. His drive to fight ghosts and protect Amity is still there, but he combats ghosts using teamwork with Sam/Tucker, modified gadgets and a lot of improvisation - He only ever switches to Phantom as a final resort. When he does, he milks it for all its worth before he has to switch back after a battle and the pain hits - As a result, Phantom form is extra powerful because excess energy isn't shed through regular use and some ghostly attributes bleed over to his human form - his eyes seem to glow a green tinge and he has a white streak in his hair ever since the accident. He ends up looking hella ecto-contaminated - Because he can't fight like he does in canon (essentially just throwing himself at an enemy until something sticks), his fighting style is a lot more strategic. He uses weapons/gear he steals from his parents that he modifies and as many ghost powers as he can manifest in human form - Sam serves as a secondary fighter, but usually leaves the heavy hitting to Danny. She helps with planning and often sets up traps to help catch ghosts. Tucker, as always, works as the tech guy but also is the team medic. Together, the trio work as a ghost fighting crew and have backup plans in place whenever Danny is out of commission - Danny usually wears a face covering when fighting and an inverted sweatshirt, but the trio's ghost fighting is kinda an open secret at Casper High. Who the fuck else has hair like that? - His Phantom identity is something much less well known because it's much more monstrous looking and is rarely seen ever. He's more of Amity's local friendly Cryptid than it's superhero

- When he switches back for the first time, he finally realizes the scope of his situation. Sam and Tucker thought he was dying for real the first time he switches over. After that, he learns very quickly to avoid using Phantom form

- As a result of the combination of how powerful Phantom is when he does switch over and the pain he experiences every time he switches over, he quickly comes to resent Phantom and associate the destruction and pain with ghosts as a whole

-Lotta self loathing here. Sorry not sorry

- Surprisingly, it's Vlad, who's in the same situation who shows him that his ghost form isn't an inherent evil

- The other ghosts get in on this action and show him the little, enjoyable things about being a ghosts

- His friends and sister help him slowly change his mindset about Phantom after that. They never saw Phantom as a force of evil, unlike Danny

To Ragh; or, On Fatness

Hi! Below is an actual play mini-essay. These are written as part of a personal writing practice of thinking critically about actual play. I hope you find this reading engaging and know that all I write reflects my own interpretations rather than as an official representation/canonization of these shows. Keep reading for my interpretation of Ragh Barkrock's fatness as part of queer representation in Dimension20.

Ragh Barkrock may be one of the most beloved NPCs in Dimension20. It would be easy for Ragh, a bloodrush player good enough to potentially play professionally, to be presented as hypermasculine. In fact, the freshmen year art for Ragh, when he was antagonist rather than beloved ally, showed him in a muscular, inverted Dorito shaped body typical of a jock.

He's, obviously, built, and his cut jaw and cheekbones only bolster that image. As Ragh comes to terms with being gay at the end of Fantasy High, his countenance changes. When we see him again, the new art reflects a chubbier, happier Ragh.

The show aligning weight gain with acceptance and happiness already works against prevailing stereotypes that use weight loss as a quick metaphor for improving yourself and being the "real you." Moreover, connecting Ragh's acceptance of his sexuality with what seems like a larger comfort in his own body is a strong indictment of hypermasculine gay culture. As Gabriel Arana writes, gay men "must reconcile their sense of masculinity with their failure to conform to its heterosexuality." Not doing so has negative mental health outcomes, as Arana points out, and contributes to a culture that devalues fat queer people (see the popular "no fats, no femmes, no Asians" that often is touted in masculine gay subculture).

All of this, I think, is why Ragh's art for Junior Year was particularly impactful for me as a fat queer person. If being a gay man (or half-Orc, in Ragh's case) means having to situate your life in relationship to failing compulsory masculinity, then it seems there is an inherent queer aspect to embracing, celebrating, and showcasing a beloved NPC in an explicitly fat and happy body.

Ragh is still strong and he is still fat. His body radiates a commitment to the power of fat bodies to exist in spaces they are often violently unwelcome in, such as gyms. Existing in gyms and sports spaces as fat people means dealing the "impossible standard that rejects nearly all of us" and upholds a diet culture rooted in impossible, Eurocentric and colonial body standards. In TTRPGS or actual plays, there is a unique opportunity to think about how bodies might exist in worlds different from ours, to imagine bodyminds as otherwise. However, as queer critics like Paul Preciado have noted, sci-fi and fantasy representations of cyborgs and other transformative bodies often lean into "fixing" disabled people or moving gender nonconforming bodies more easily towards technologies upholding a normative standard rather than questioning the standard all together.

Spyre is a world that deals with similar issues to ours, even without direct one-to-one correlations, so it, too, is a place where the narrative and artistic choices should be examined in how it helps us interpolate the world the audience resides in. From the Applebees cultish adherence to a deity-based nationalism to the various representations of parental neglect and abuse and every side story in-between, Dimension20's flagship show does not shy away from difficult realities even when recasting them through fantasy. Ragh, as a half-orc gay son of a disabled single mother, then, I see the arc his fat body goes through as meaningful and intertwined with his self-acceptance and queerness. He moves away from the toxic masculinity engineered into his blood rush team to instead pursue coalition comraderie with his friends to the point that he and his mother end up joining a communal living situation with those friends and their parents. Ragh's body expands as his family does, as his ties to community do, and to me, the gift of his fatness is the invitation to expansion that it holds out to us as viewers.

Excuse me, do you work here? (DC x DP)

This is sort of based off of the core idea behind The second, secret Justice League, so mayhaps consider reading that if you haven't? It'll take you 2 minutes max. Also, here's my masterpost.

So, Danny frequently works with the JL headquartered in the Infinite Realms. Basically, every League-Adjacent hero who died in costume chose to continue their work and make the Violent Afterlife a little safer. It's lead by Jason Todd as Batman (he never revived after Joker killed him in this AU - ....yet?) and has whomever else you like it in it. It's still just called the Justice League because with the zone inhabitants being long dead, never born or aliens, enough of them are unfamiliar with Justice League Earth.

They're better than ghost cops because they all died within the last decade. They remember what it is to be alive, they remember living people who they love and it changes the way that their minds think about crime and criminals in the zone. Their criminals are still people, not just obstructions to their obsessions.

And in a fun swap, Jason lives in mortal terror of the day anyone dares to kill the Joker. He hopes that asshole lives to the age of 108 and dies peacefully in bed so the chances of the Joker becoming an ecto-entity are as low as possible.

The regular, non-secret Justice League are kidnapped by a cool Alien species who want to make them fight. Not to the death, unless you feel like it, but more as a exhibition match. Martian Manhunter, Superman, Green Lantern and Constantine are not pumped to be kidnapped but the Lantern explains that doing well in this tournament will be super great going forward. If other planets hear about Earth's robust defence, they're all going to be less likely to fuck around and find out in future.

So, Constantine, in his infinite wisdom decides to - while they wait for the whole thing to start - summon the "best equipped" Justice League member to fight on their behalf. This other member (he assumes it will be Wonder Woman or Plastic Man) will probably not love being taken to a new planet. But, it's for the greater good and they'll all be taken home later.

But he didn't specify which Justice League - not knowing there are two. A 14 year old (looking) boy shows up. Superman is furious. Constantine, trembling with horror in what his hasty actions have done, explains everything.

Danny's thrilled, he's on a NEW PLANET?! He's met a MARTIAN? And he gets to do a low-stakes fight that could save millions of lives someday? This is the best day ever!

Danny tells them he's gonna fight, and he's gonna win, and they're going to help him get in touch with Batman on Earth when he's done. As payment.

He wants to tell Earth Batman that Ghost Batman loves him and never blamed him etc etc. Things Jason didn't exactly tell Danny to tell Bruce, but that he's mentioned to the team as wishing he could reach out and tell Batman before. (Why doesn't Jason go to Earth? Maybe he doesn't know which one, maybe the idea of being on the same planet as Joker sends him into a destructive rage, maybe he thinks telling Bruce he's still out there would do more harm than good... idk)

4 adult heroes watch in awe as Danny does a magic girl transformation into Inverted Danny and starts pulling more and more powers out of absolutely nowhere. Danny obliterates his competition and everyone is scared to hell of him. He gives an unwanted speech about what an honour it was to represent his solar system (he's thinking of his new bestie Martian Manhunter's culture's safety too).

It's only on the way home in the spaceship owned by the tournament mangers that it occurs to any of the Normal Justice League members to ask how this kid they've never even heard of is a member of their team and what he wants to discuss with Batman.

Spider-man Villains and Hands

If you're paying attention you'll notice often times in Spiderverse that villains are far less expressive with their hands than the heroes. That is unless it's to attack.

Kingpin clicks his pen to relieve rage he's only barely controlling and in Peter Parker's death scene, the only time we see his hands is to kill him.

With Doc Ock, we see her doing a lot of excited gesturing with her hands (pushing up her glasses, studying Peter, etc.).

But after her reveal, it's her tentacles that does most of the talking.

Moving on to ATSV, when we first meet Spot, he's experimenting with his Spots with (you guesses it!) his hands and it's a lot of trial and error. It's also a lot of slap-stick comedy in his first fight with Miles managing to take him out briefly by making him punch himself in the face.

However as he becomes more confident with his powers, we see him use his hands less and less to the point he doesn't need to use a spot to teleport between dimensions. Instead of attacking them, Spot starts fighting by letting the heroes attack him.

And by the end of the film, his mere presence has become such a threat to Miles that all he has to do to invoke fear is stand still. This is why after his colour scheme has been completely inverted, he doesn't fight or do anything with his hands anymore and it's why our last focus on his hands is when he watches it completely turn from white to black.

When we first get a good look at Miguel, we get a close-up of his claws before panning up to his watch. Firstly this shows us how unlike the other Spider-people Miguel is. He has claws and wears a cape. Peter says in the first movie, "Spider-man doesn't wear capes." Then we see a better look at his watch which tells us this character isn't just scary and powerful, but is powerful in their access to other dimensions without having their cells decay - which by the end of the movie proves to be another problem for Miles. Immediately this shot warns us that Miguel is an unstoppable and dangerous person and the sirens in his leitmotif only emphasise that, even if the characters don't realise it yet.

Likewise with Fisk and Doc Ock in the previous Spiderverse installment, Miguel also doesn't have a lot of hand animations outside of fighting and we see this visual language in his meeting with Miles. Miles offers Miguel an empanadas and calls him 'Tio' ("uncle" in Spanish) as an offer of respect and solidarity, but Miguel's response is to grab the box and throws it aside before resuming his stance.

Here Miguel isn't just refusing Miles, he's also refusing the subliminal coding of a heroic character and I feel this has a lot to do with how our human brains work. The way we understand people and animals is by the way they mirror us. We like patterns and to draw parallels to ourselves. When someone is excited, we're excited. When someone's confused, we're confused. When someone's sad, we're sad. And so on. However when we're faced with something that doesn't react how we expect or reacts unpredictably, like Miguel throwing the empanadas back at Miles, it's sets off a warning in our brains. It's kind of like a predator hunting prey, which is the exact dynamic between Miles and Miguel by the end of the film.

However in Miles' mind, he has no idea why Miguel is being so antagonistic towards him. Even when Peter says, "He's always like this." Miguel remains stoic when Mayday is crawling around him and only moves to catch her and hand her back to Peter. Like with the empanadas, this is another example of Miguel's lack of ability to connect with the people in his environment other than through aggression and violence. It's why Miles calls out, "You have claws? Are you sure your Spider-man?" Because Spider-man is defined by his ability to connect with people - hero or villain.

Then we get to another clawed antagonist who hunts Miles for the duration of the first Spiderverse's runtime. Much like Miguel, Prowler's movement is mostly unstoppable aggression. That is until he learns Miles is Spider-man. Aside from presenting as Aaron Davis, Prowler is most identifiable by his giant claws and the camera makes sure of it.

It's only when Aaron learns who Miles is does he take off a claw to hold his hand in his final moments. Unlike Miguel, the claws are not exclusively attached to his suit - they are removable and thus Aaron is able to connect with the people in his environment outside of his identity as the Prowler.

Which finally leads us to our other Prowler, who likewise is able to put on and take off the claws. But where am I going with this?

I feel like in this scene the lighting and colour grading is doing the most work in making Prowler intimidating. Because unlike Aaron's Prowler, Miles' Prowler design is very casual for a villain. Which works for the character but without the claws and the mask, Miles looks just as scrawny as his Spider-man counter-part. It's almost too casual without those key identifiers. Which is why I think we're going to see a lot of Miles' Prowler without the claws and interacting with his family in the next film, as well as dealing with his own identity. Like Aaron in the first film and unlike Miguel in the second, we're going to see how Prowler connects with his environments beyond serving as a antagonistic foil to Miles.

The fun thing about One Piece is that it's so long and picked up its own momentum to the point that Oda really can just pick something he wrote two years ago and expand on it because there's so much to choose from. He can plant as many seeds as he wants, and some will grow, and some won't, and there's a feast to be had. Anyways I posit Mumbo has the Simple-Simple fruit, that can invert the simplicity of anything (from complex into simple and vice versa). (He's not in limited life but I can't resist)

THIS IS SO TRUE. and also that is SUCH an inspired devil fruit power for mumbo to have he absolutely has that, canon to this au now. i think he's not a pirate or a marine or anything in this au, i think he's just like, some guy. i think he managed to accidentally eat a devil fruit (who does that anyway) and is now like. well i guess this is my life now. do i need to be a pirate. i really don't want to be a pirate. and has, so far, managed to figure out how to mostly hide out as a decently well-regarded shipwright who can make building complex ships simple and make trying to EXPLAIN that really complicated. he owes grian several favors and grian owes him several favors back, so grian shows up to bother him and try to convince him to join his crew periodically. one of these days it may even work.

been thinking about the dinvali-kilvali split in blades. on the surface i think it seems to us a more "progressive" way to view relationships as it's reminiscent of the split-attraction model and is very aspec friendly as the only thing actually needed for marriage is emotional loyalty, not necessarily romantic or sexual at all. QPRs can be married without the usual romantic and sexual associations attached to it as is for many in real life.

however, in a diegetic sense, this structure of relationships is to the detriment of elves in blades the same way romantic and sexual monogamy (and even polygamy in some cultures) can be for many in real life. these relationships do not work in a vacuum and this structure of relationships was directly influenced by religion - the old gods made it so in order to exercise (unjust) power over the lives and bodies of elves, and that included their interpersonal relationships. to elves, to be monogamous is controversial. that tyril creates a whole new word to describe his (in-universe) monogamy is radical because it goes against the hegemonic control of dinvali-kilvali philosophy.

this also extends to tyril's kilma, who never took a dinvalir. tyril wonders how much she must have suffered for doing so, i.e. not conforming to elven customs.

i choose to view this as a critique on how pervasive power systems and philosophies extend their power down to the smallest units in society, starting with the interpersonal foundations of the "family" - the smallest unit of such. it does not matter if one is strictly monogamous or more in favor of "open" relationships as is with the elves, the fact is that these relationships are strictly mandated by institutions of society - in this case religious ones - and that to not follow is to risk social rejection and lack of support. changing the model of relationships on the surface does not erase that the foundations of setting that "standard" were done with imperial and controlling intent.

same can be said the with "matriarchy" of orcs. to many of us living in patriarchal societies, the idea of women having power is an appealing one. however, that does not erase that despite the orcs in blades being a matriarchy, elements of imperial monarchic control remain. inverting traditional gendered power dynamics does not remove the fact that the hegemonic, unequal rule of a gender binary remains. the overturning of one system without destroying the root of said system only allows for the continuation of inequality in society but with a different face.

A few of my characters!

Drac Dliw, or just Drac, is an immortal shapeshifter. Their gender is yes, and they are about 2,044,169 years old. They enjoy shapeshifting and spying on people, and they definitely don't have an irrational fear of inverted cursors. Their soul is eternally bound to their body, so they cannot die or feel pain except for headaches.

Shifter, the other immortal shapeshifter. He is 16,199 and male. He enjoys alcohol the wilderness, and he doesn't really like shapeshifting. He also HATES the word discord. He has no idea why. He can't die, but he can get hurt. Shifter's powers are more.. limited than Drac's.

Talon the lizard mermaid! She is female, and is roughly 19. She also enjoys spying on people and the woods, and has a genuine disliking of water, specifically oceans. She isn't a shapeshifter, but she does have water bending abilities. She also has a very rational fear of capybaras.

Flower the tortle! She is almost 7 years old, and she loves just about everyone and everything. The big flower hat on her head somehow never dies, and is very durable. (She's the least traumatized, as her backstory is still in the making)

Sade, the half-robot lizard guy. He's about 28 and male. He used to enjoys engineering and mechanics, and he hates bombs. (i wonder why AHEMGHH *intense coughing* excuse me) He always wears a black cloak.

whatever cdream's classpect is i don't think he's utilizing his aspect the best way for his class; he's definitely found a way to use it, but to his own detriment and not to the potential of what he could be doing. i'm not sure about his aspect but i'm wondering about a mage?

FIRST THINGS FIRST CDREAM WOULD BE AN ACTIVE CLASS. and i really really think he would be light. LISTENNNNN to me. okay i do really nbeed to establish aspect first because in my understanding of aspects is that the class works around it, so it just doesn't make sense without it.

light is about The Meaning, The Answer. This aspect proposes with it's own existence that there is meaning to be found in every place, that there is a correct meaning or action. This doesn't mean it's good, mind you. Just that it's right (or Just, if you will). Light also means clarity and importance, and all light characters are crucial to the story (Rose, Vriska, The Other Vriska..) — which like, while we have argued to death the idea that what made the dsmp important was how there wasn't A Main character, cDream as an antagonist/villain was this presence that loomed above every character and arc. When he logged in shit was about to go down. HE'S IMPORTANT. and he's focused with finding Meaning within the story. Why does he do half the things he does? from a metatextual perspective, it's because the server needs someone to go against the main goals, but then it's revealed that he only actually wanted to go back to where things made Sense (the beginning. when everyone was friends with each other). It made sense to live in the same server when everyone was collaborating with each other, not so much when there's literal nuke threats against each other.

Light players are obsessive and cunning, and they love to appear mysterious and disconnected. However......you changed my life with what you said about him not connecting correctly to his aspect through an invesion, and thus I propose: Prince of Light cDream that, as the session progresses, inverts to Seer of Void (and gets punished for it by the narrative). You get what I think? I think this guy getting too much on the out of the cameras, in the background "manipulation" is what ultimately drives him to his own detrimentem. He doesnt stop being Light: he's looking for answers re: the three deaths system and the revival book and what the fuck is wrong with the server, but he no longer has access to prime prince of light powers, Manipulating light passively and voiding the world, creating blankness (aka DESTROYING not through his aspect). DO YOU GET MEEEE DO YOU HEAR MEEEE

How do the Neutral, Pacifist, And No Mercy endings work?

Good Question! Lemme just cook up a rough draft of them..

Neutral: No matter what you do, at the end of the Asgore fight, he... Well, he finishes the job for you, to say the least. Flowey tries to stop him every time, but can't. The souls are then freed from their containers, and Flowey, who just accidentally absorbed ASGORE's Soul, accidentally absorbs the Six Human Souls as well. Instead of fighting good ol Omega Flowey, you fight this Amalgamate-like version of Asriel, with flowey's melting face and some other melting parts. You have to remind all 6 Souls on who they are so they can let go of Flowey. When that's done, Flowey apologizes to Frisk and begs them to kill him, because he ruined everything. You don't get an option. Frisk spares him, and walks out of the barrier with Flowey.

True Pacifist: Flowey tells everyone his plan up and front. Once he absorbs everyones souls, however... something else happens that's.. Not Ideal. Asriel feels everyone's hearts beating as one, and feels.. Chara? No, that can't be right! Frisk would have told him.. Asriel feels betrayed that Frisk kept the fact Chara was still there a secret. You have to remind all 9 lost souls who they are. (Original 6 + Noelle, Woshua, and Vulkin.) And then, you have a heart to heart with Asriel, along with Chara, who with the power Asriel has, is able to manifest a physical form for them, sorta like how Inverted Fate does it. He apologizes to both of them, and they both give him a hug. Like with Sparing Flowey, this isn't your choice. He then breaks the Barrier and releases everyone's SOULS, becoming Flowey again. Everythings back to normal again, with the slightest difference. Chara's not gone. They're alive.

No Mercy:The ending is pretty much the same as in Undertale, but Flowey (And noelle) don't express how they think this isn't a good Idea, Until after the Sans fight and Asgore's death. After that you have the final battle against Flowey and Noelle teaming up.

I really like your classpect system, do you think you could explain it a bit more? Like, how does the abstraction system work, and what’re the opposites of the other aspects like kettle? (Also, I’m curious as to how a Kettle of the Devil works)

Thank you so much!! I Would LOVE to talk about the No Dignity Classpect basically anytime lmao.

So the thing about No Dignity is it is %500 percent about personal interpretation. It's essentially a big running joke about the nature of classpecting in general? My personal view on canon classpect is very much influenced by the sort of universal symbolic nature of the archetypes involved? Like what's a "knight" in the canon of western storytelling? What does the concept of "time" symbolize?

No Dignity takes that idea to extremes- what your No Dignity classpect does and how it works comes down almost entirely to how you expect it to work, what things you personally associate with those symbols. Meaning, two people could have exactly the same classpect and it might work completely differently for both of them.

This brings us to the concepts of Aphortheosis and Abstraction.

"Aphortheosis" (aphorism + apotheosis) is the measure of how closely a title adheres to a known aphorism, something which has a broad, well known interpretation. "Can of worms" for example is a well understood aphorism, so a lot of people are going to interpret it a similar way, and it's going to apply broadly to a lot of things. Therefore it conveys broad, versatile power.

"Abstraction" is a measure of how far a title moves away from a known aphorism. There are twelve "recognized" aphorisms (but more are being discovered all the time, I've already added a bunch to some of those graphics I made lmao) so abstraction is calculated based on the "official" recording of those recognized aphorisms. So a Cup of Tea is not abstracted, abstraction score of 0. Cup of Roses is one time abstracted, Cup of Laughs is three times abstracted, ect. The more abstracted a title becomes, the more opaque the interpretation of the aphorism becomes, the more influenced by the player's personalized interpretation. The result is a reduction in broad, versatile power, but a concentration of power in whatever the specific Domain of the title is- Domain being whatever the title has power over. Therefore, a Cup of Tea would have influence over a wide domain of anything related to comfort, gossip, preferences, interests ect. They wouldn't be wildly powerful at anything in particular, but they could do a wide variety of things. A Cup of Ass on the other hand, would be able to do like, one thing, but they would be hugely powerful at that one thing (as a, uh, conveyor of fertility I'll leave it up to the imagination what that one thing would be...)

Additionally, the traditional "classes" can be used as "aspects" and vice versa, at the cost of an exponential abstraction multiplier. So an Ass of Dumb is 2x abstracted. An Ass of Kettle is 4x, Ass of Dog is 8x, ect ect. Meaning an Ass of Cup is 4,906x abstracted. Not sure where I got 112 in the original graphic... What this means in practice is that these highly abstracted titles would be almost powerless except in an incredibly specific circumstance, in which case their power would be practically unlimited. For an Ass of Cup that circumstance might be.... destroying someone else's victory? Going on a quest to seduce someone?

The opposite of Kettle might be Silence? Oh unless you meant the reversed associations, I do have a thing for that. Un-inverted associations included for clarity.

Keep in mind these associations are extremely malleable! These are basically just *my* associations with these words.

The biggest thing to remember is that you can't really define the class and aspect separately! You can't really say "well the aspect of Worms is associated with decay so they can all rot things, and Can class is associated with preserving things so they can all make, like, forcefields around stuff..." You have to treat the title as a whole thing. A Dog of War is not a Dog Class imposed on a War Aspect, it is a Dog of War, it's own whole thing. The way a class or aspect manifests and what domain and powers it conveys is strongly dependent on its relationship with the other half of the title. For example, a Dog of War has domain over soldiers, military action, state sanctioned violence, looting, the abandonment of polite society. They might have powers relating to removing the inhibitions of other towards violence, or steering the movement of armies and mobs. A Dog of God on the other hand, implies worship and intense loyalty. They might have powers related to self sacrifice or doing great violence in the name of whatever they're devoted to.

A Kettle of the Devil is a very interesting title! If I imagine the metaphorical meaning of the Devil's Kettle, I'm put in mind not of a tea kettle, or the large pots for cooking fish referred to by the original aphorism, but of the practice of "kettling," the police tactic of forming up around large crowds and then advance, forcing them into a smaller area where they can be contained and arrested, bottled up like steam in a kettle. The Devil's Kettle conjures an image of surrounding and trapping a large group of people in a particularly hellish situation, like preventing them from fleeing a burning building. So a Kettle of the Devil might have powers related to trapping and driving people into something horrible. You could interpret that literally (makes a slowly shrinking forcefield that pushes enemies into a fire) or metaphorically (knows exactly what buttons to press to make someone feel trapped and as though they have no choice but to do something they know will end horribly).

Alternatively! My girlfriend interpreted the Devil's Kettle as something a baptist grandma would say about some kind of drink she disapproves of (ala The Devil's Lettuce). Something nourishing but inherently sinister and addictive? So their powers might be related to healing, but have dangerous side effects.

But both of those are less meaningful than what Kettle of the Devil implies symbolically to you, personally. Maybe you have some personal associations with Kettles or Devils that most people don't! Maybe you drank a lot of tea growing up and associate Kettles with a kitchens, domesticity, your mom. Maybe you burned yourself really badly on a Kettle when you were young and you associate them with heat and danger! Maybe the first thing you think about when you imagine a kettle is the whistling, so your association is about piercing sound! It's all fluid, as fluid as language and symbolism and association always is. The lists of associations are merely a place to start if nothing jumps to mind.

Ok ok so I've never really tried to put my thoughts into words before so this might be a bit of a mess usually I'm just rotating him in my mind but yes yes yes I have Dan thoughts I want to share my Dan thoughts

I only focus on agit at the end so this is pretty spoiler free for that I think maybe. Thumbs up emoji

Dan is a fun character because despite only having one episode we can still tell alot about his personality and such, as he's rather bold with it and is a fusion of two characters we do see alot, and it really shows! I flip between saying Dan or more Danny than Vlad and saying that they're basically equal in the fusion, but I think a good way to describe it is that he takes different aspects from them, for his appearance and memories he very much takes after Danny, but his personality and how he acts n talks oozes Vlad. Yknow??? If I'm saying the right words here. Dan works so well as a fusion because he also manages to feel like his own character as well

Dan is made from the two's ghost halves, so I'm a fan of the theory/thought I do believe I've seen before that he's based on the ghost halves. Like. Vlad used his ghost form and powers for scheming, attacking, gaining power, and so on, I'd easily imagine he doesn't use it nearly as much as Danny. Danny had to use his ghost form mostly for fighting other ghosts, very frequently, and also used his powers for his own benefit as well, though not nearly as extreme as Vlad. As Danny was in his ghost form more, and as it was more connected to his ghost form (phantom just being an inverted Danny VS Vlad's completely different from himself ghost form, even down to body type) it makes sense why Dan would be more Danny focused, especially in terms of his relationship with others and memories. Vlad's things don't matter to him nearly as much. I mean, he seemingly couldn't find Vlad's new hideout that was under a Welcome to Wisconsin sign, and its ghost zone entrance behind a football

"The only remaining portal, the one my idiot cheesehead archenemy has? As soon as I find it that's going too."

He doesn't respect Vlad in the slightest or seem to care about him. Danny found Vlad's portal almost immediately. So either Dan simply couldn't remember things Vlad liked well enough to guess, and/or, he truly couldn't care less and didn't bother too hard with the search. Both makes sense, and since Vlad is fully human that very likely adds to the contempt and not seeing him as threat enough to find the portal quickly.

Something interesting, is the fact Dan knows Vlad had a portal at all, Dan partially destroyed Vlad's castle after being formed and its clearly in a different location now, unless that cave Vlad is in streaches all the way to his castle's basement Dan hasn't bothered checking? Which is. Unlikely. Which means Vlad had to make a new one. And Dan knew he did. Much to think about there I believe.

I do also think Dan actually doesn't remember his past terribly well. I know I know I just said he's focused on Danny's memories and life, and he is! But also. Its a bit separated from him, the episode itself actually points out him forgetting things about his family several times, it really does feel like they're trying to stress to you, really hammer it in that he's forgotten them some way. It's mentioned offhand like 2 or 3 times.

When Jazz confronts him and admits she knew about his ghost powers he says "You knew?" So??? Softly???? Like PLEASE listen to that line especially after hearing how he usually talks oh my GOSH??!?!!?!?!?! AUGH. slamming my hands on the floor I could make a whole separate thing just thinking of that interaction alone. God. He never knew she knew, it took him by genuine surprise for a moment. And just????? Augh??!???!?!!?!?! He had one family member always in his corner and secretly looking out for him, she believed in him and knew he was trying to do good and she had been waiting for him to reveal it to her in his own time but that time never came because she'd died and haiabsjahasguaaaai u ghjjfhdhfjshauhghhhhh

When Danny enters the future Valerie immediately thinks he Dan, she doesn't question it in the slightest, or question him saying "I have really bad feeling im the one responsible". Before attacking she says "You can't fool me this time Phantom". I take this as either meaning Dan has disguised himself as a young Phantom before, or Valerie is so used to his tricks and and finding new powers that him suddenly looking younger doesn't phase her in the slightest. I do like the idea him disguising as a young Phantom before more. It seems very probable considering he can be Danny Fenton. But this interaction also makes me wonder if Valerie knows, or ever learned that Fenton is Phantom, the trick from before easily could've been Fenton. "The explosion at the Nasty Burger, you, Tucker, Danny's family- and it was all your fault!" She's points her blaster at Phantom while saying that last bit. It makes me wonder if her saying "Danny's family" is showing how she doesn't know he's Danny. There's still other options like her knowing but not admitting he's Fenton, or her knowing he was Danny once but isn't anymore, hence saying "Danny's family" instead of something like "his family". Honestly, her knowing or not are both equally likely. As I said in my tags before, Dan seems to like to get a rise out of people, to get a reaction, he very easily could've told her in an attempt to anger or devastate her, and at the same time he simply could've not bothered at all. I think I prefer the option of her not knowing personally

I don't think I could describe Dan more concisely than I did before, he likes to get a rise out of people, revel in reactions. He twists the past to credit himself for the Nasty Burger explosion after he more than likely blamed himself for it as Danny. He likes to seem in control. He's dramatic. He hates being insulted. Hates losing. He's very casual about alot of things he does.

He caused destruction in both the human and ghost world, the first thing he did upon entering Amity was completely destroy the ghost portal, with plans to destroy Vlad's. I'm not sure what his plan in the end was, but after destroying both portals, I must point out that Dan has the power to summon his own ghost portal with ease, a power I believe is quite rare, I think other than Dan only Wulf has it, though do feel free to correct me on that. So he would've been one of the only people who could go in or out

He was actively trying to/did ruin the lives of the ghosts he knew

Powers. Ohhh boy powers. When I started my DP rewatch my initial plan was to actually take note of every power Danny uses to know what he can do, and by extension Dan. I didn't. Oopsies. So most I can focus on here are what Dan shows in the episode, other than the obvious

I do like thinking on ice powers, and what that means with Dan, obviously he's never shown to know them as they're not introduced until season 3, the writers themselves didn't know it'd happen lol. But in universe, that's something to chew on, Dan never met Frostbite, so if he ever unlocked this power he would've had to figure out the problem and train it on his own, and then there's the potential that Dan never learned, and the ability for ice powers eluded him due to fusion. The ghost sense is a result of his ice powers after all, and Dan's ghost sense isn't a breath of cold blue air, so that could be a sign of this power being one he doesn't have

But moving onto more straightforward powers

Dan destroyed Amity Park in a very short amount of time, all on his own, as while the Fright Knight had been there after the shield went down, he's simply never seen again after that, makes me think Dan just ordered Fright Knight to chase Valerie to Fentonworks and leave after

Related to Amity Park, while there are other destroyed buildings around, the land surrounding the ghost portal is a completely barren wasteland, no doubt from Dan's attempts at destroying the forcefield over the years, and simply scaring residents.

One could argue Dan was the reason lighting was striking around the forcefield, weather manipulation I wouldn't doubt is in his wheelhouse, especially since he's shown to have electrocution powers, at least it looks that way to me

Dan has fire powers, at least immunity to fire. Fire rises after he enters the lab through the cracks he put in the floor, and when he's thrown into truck it bursts into flame. Both instances of the fire happening I suppose you call coincidence, but his immunity to fire at least is undeniable

Dan can force Danny to detransform, and shorted out Danny's powers while holding onto him. This is also the moment where it seems like mild electrocution

Dan can suspend people in ectoplasm, Sam and Tucker also seem frozen completely for a scene, and in a later scene move their heads n such around

He can use a time medallion to enter the exact time and place he needs/where Sam and Tucker went

He specifically used the word fused to describe putting the amulet in Danny, which I find interesting. Entering something while intangible seems to be what causes fusion. Though more to it than that since ghosts can possess other ghosts (or was that a special case since the only example I know is Poindexter possessing a still half ghost Danny🤔)

Dan can form ropes of ectoplasm that can wrap around and trap people, as well as using ecto energy to cover people's mouths to stop talking

Dan is very resilient, I mean, he literally flys through a light pole non-intagabily and doesn't even react. He, while injured from it, did pretty much tank 1 ghostly wail, and still got up after the second, but was weak enough after to be sucked into the thermos

Dan seems to have minor technology powers, nothing major, but like, he does make himself appear on Valerie's watch so he can tell her about the ghostly wail

The ghostly wail of course, which is naturally much stronger than Danny's version. Can destroy nearly all glass in future Amity Park, destroys all the ghost shield towers one by one in a line, makes the Fentonworks building fall down when directly hit. Flips tanks and makes helicopters lose control. Destroyed Ember's vocal cords somehow

He can duplicate himself very easily, and become one again with the same ease. He turns into to a gas form to dodge Valerie's grenades

I don't have the time to focus on his behavior in AGiT rn, but it lines up with my thoughts. I do like the confirmation that Dan wanted Danny to suffer as he had/didn't think it fair for Danny to get a second chance to save his family. And it deeply trapped by his own emotions and just unwilling to admit it. I can still skim the book to think about powers. I put AGiT powers in this own little section to be skipped if you don't want spoilers

-He 100% has fire powers no doubt about it now

-I should've described his ability to suspend people in ectoplasm as telekinesis

-Can make shields, usually briefly and by swiping his arm

-When Dan emerges from the rubble, he briefly turns it into lava, and then water, I cannot be sure if this is because of having Clockwork's powers, or just his own at work

-His powers seem to turn blue rather than green, but its hard to tell for certain. But we do know his fire is blue so it's not completely out

Other people have probably said this sooner and better, but I’m actually not done thinking about Everything Everywhere All At Once because the googly eyes represent on such a physical level the movie’s theme of radical empathy; not just in serving as the visual inverse of the Nihilism Bagel, but in that their presence literally inverts the concept of nihilism.

Does anyone else remember that Lindsey Ellis video essay from years ago where she talked about how aliens in sci fi movies are designed, and that by and large if the audience is supposed to empathise with them as characters then they’ll have big eyes with visible irises and pupils? And if they’re supposed to be unknowable and dangerous then they may not have visible eyes at all? Think E.T versus the Xenomorph or the heptapods from Arrival. Artists will do that because the eyes are the most direct way humans have of looking at a thing and understanding what it is. The more visible and mammal-like the eyes, the more familiarity we have with it, therefore the greater our empathy for it. Think of the amount of love your average person on the street will have for a random dog versus a random fly or snake or bird. Not to say that we can’t have empathy for the latter, but eyes make it easier.

In the movie, the first thing we see of the googly eyes is stuck on one of the bags of clothes Waymond stored upstairs – just in passing, he says something like “I think they’re happier up there!” while Evelyn’s shouting at him. She rips the eyes off and tells him to stop, keeps rushing around and ignoring Joy (ignoring joy, lmao). But they keep trickling back into the movie at every turn, stuck to washing machines and baseball bats, filling the world with friendly faces. Waymond, in a world that treats people like objects, treats objects like people, and he manifests it by giving them eyes. At one point he’s stuck them on a lampshade or something, shares a glance with it when he notices Evelyn’s noticed him and runs off like they’re conspiring together. When Evelyn finally comes around to his point of view, she sticks them on herself as a rock – this outermost physical form where she and Joy have un-personed themselves to the greatest extent they can manage, just rocks in an empty universe of rocks – and uses them to drag them both back into personhood.

And it works so well as a metaphor because the fundamental antagonistic force in the story is the refusal to empathise – Evelyn’s dismissal of Joy’s life choices and the partner she’s chosen, Alpha Evelyn’s literal use of Joy as an experiment, Gong Gong’s unwillingness to be proud of his daughter, Evelyn’s own refusal to be proud of herself. In the tax audit Deirdre is listing all of Evelyn’s business expense claims with reference to what they would make her as a person – ‘You’re telling me you’re a singer, a chef, a teacher, a novelist, well that can’t be right because you’re just a laundromat owner.’ The system she represents only has space for Evelyn to be one thing, denies her her complexity and humanity, so Deirdre acting as the arm of that system inevitably has to do the same (this is how her universe has to work, because it’s the one where she has a modicum of power and doesn’t have to think about driving her car through her ex’s kitchen).

And so it creates a feedback loop – Deirdre can’t acknowledge Evelyn’s humanity so Evelyn can’t acknowledge Deirdre’s. She can barely manage to love this person when her life literally depends on it. It’s only through Waymond’s approach of convincing Deirdre to confront the fact that he and Evelyn are people, the fact of what it really means for her to be coming after their livelihood like this, that a new feedback loop can be created. Deirdre can now acknowledge Evelyn’s humanity and give her a fucking break. Evelyn can acknowledge Deirdre’s and glimpse universes where they choose each other, spend their lives together.

(The cookies Waymond gives to Deirdre that initially persuade her to allow them a second chance have smiley faces on them).

The movie’s ultimate message is pretty clear – fuck nihilism, maybe nothing matters but also everything matters because I’m here and you’re here and I love you. But it doesn’t stop there. Fuck nihilism, maybe nothing matters but also everything matters because I’m here and this lampshade is here and I love it. I love this washing machine, this baseball bat, this bag of laundry. If I was a rock I would love all the other rocks with everything in my little rock soul. It’s can’t end at loving ourselves and loving each other, we’ve got to love the universe. On like, a molecular level.
