Growing up, all I knew about Barbara Stanwyck was that she was some old movie star & was the mom on 'The Big Valley'. It was on after Gilligan's Island & we used to watch it after school, if it was raining outside & we were done with our homework.
As I got older I watched some of her old movies, but it was just recently that I learned of her true fame, the volume of her work & that she was a Ziegfeld girl a hundred years ago.
I met Lee Majors & thought he was an ass, so I enjoyed finding this...

From a very old archived magazine article:
Why Barbara Stanwyck Disliked Lee Majors (The Six Million Dollar Man) - & What He Did To Deserve It
by Julie Jackson
Of all the stars in Hollywood, Barbara Stanwyck, the gracious, gallant lady who grew up an orphan on the streets of Brooklyn is perhaps best loved. Of all the young men and women with hands reaching for the next rung of the ladder and eyes focussed on the main chance, Lee Majors is perhaps the most disliked. "The only kind of love Lee knows," says a member of the "Big Valley" organization, "is self-love. He treats members of the crew and extras - the unimportant people by Hollywood standards - as though they were less than human. Barbara Stanwyck would be kind and gracious to a visitor from skid row.
The Extra With Connections
"A few weeks ago a pretty girl was hired as an extra for one episode. This girl dates a man who has a technical job on the show. Between scenes she walked over to talk with him. Lee watched her for a while. Then he stalked over and interrupted their conversation. 'Why are you talking to her?' he asked the man. 'She's an extra.'
"You want to know something? The girl was Sherry Smothers, sister of Tom and Dick Smothers. If Lee had known she was the sister of the Smothers Brothers, he wouldn't have been so rude. In fact, he probably would have asked her to marry him, because he's so impressed by anyone with connections."
There are many kinds of love and many ways of failing at it. Barbara Stanwyck knows that. Lee Majors does not.
Stanwyck & Majors
From Barbara Stanwyck, Lee Majors could learn many things about love. He could learn first about "the feeling of benevolence and brotherhood that people should have for each other," as Websters' Dictionary puts it.
Several years ago on a boiling summer day, some of the grips working under the white hot arc lights on the Barbara Stanwyck film took off their shirts. An officious assistant director dressed then down, asking how they dared take off their shirts when they were in the presence of Miss Stanwyck.
"On a day as hot as this they can strip naked," Miss Stanwyck said, and sent out for beer for the entire crew.
When the "Big Valley" series started, Barbara Stanwyck saw in Lee Majors, talent, ambition and a certain screen magnetism. She was as graciously willing to help him as she had been to help William Holden, Robert Wagner, and half a dozen other young men cast opposite her early in their careers. But Lee Majors did not respond with the gallantry of Holden (who stills sends her flowers every year as a token of his gratitude) or the charm of Wagner. Before a season passed, Lee had announced to the press that Miss Stanwyck was jealous of all the fan mail he was receiving.
The most generous interpretation of his gaucherie is that it came from his over eagerness to be successful. Stanwyck ignored his tactlessness when it was merely directed towards herself. But she refused to tolerate his lack of consideration when it affected the crew. She gave him a bitter tongue-lashing in front of the entire crew. It included phrases like: "You have to learn to crawl before you can walk. Then, maybe you can run a little.
Lee's agent made him apologize to Barbara Stanwyck a few days later. She accepted the apology. But Lee's insensitivity had closed a door. He had lost for himself all the help and consideration that one of Hollywood's great stars was offering him.
I don’t see any difference between getting along with people in Hollywood and any other place. You treat people with dignity and respect their opinions as being as valuable - or as valueless - as yours.
I’m sentimental in all respects - and not ashamed of it I think people would be better off if they were more sentimental. Some say it’s sloppy to be this way. All right, let’s be sloppy then. Kindness of people affects me a great deal and I get misty-eyed about the smallest thoughtfulness.
- Barbara Stanwyck

Dame Fanny Moody (1864-1945) of Redruth was known as ‘The Cornish Nightingale’. Her father could, it was said, play any instrument he had ever seen. Her mother was a pianist, and their large family were exceptionally musical, in particular the daughters Fanny (Francis), Lily (1867-1950), Mabel (1874-1952) and Hilda (1876-1961). Newspaper reports show that all the sisters performed locally as young women. Fanny went on to become one of the great singing stars of her age. Hilda joined the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company in 1896, and later toured with her elder sister’s opera company. Lily, mezzo soprano, sang with J. W. Turner’s English Opera Company (1887-1902).
Fanny, allegedly seen dancing on a shop counter when young, became a pupil of Robert Heath of Redruth. Her first reported performance was in Ponsanooth on 26 March 1879 at the age of 14. Later that year Fanny’s mother died and her father was left with seven children. Nevertheless, in the winter of 1879/80, Fanny performed over a dozen concerts, mostly in Redruth, but also in Penzance and Falmouth. This intensive pattern was repeated in the next two winters, during which she built a large local following.
Her talent was recognized by Lady Mary Basset of Tehidy, who in late 1881 paid for her to train in London at the Vocal Academy of the renowned Mme. C. H. Sainton-Dolby. Fanny made her London début at the Steinway Hall, Seymour Street in June 1883. In April 1884, with other students, she gave a concert in Newcastle. All was loyally reported in Cornish newspapers.
In Newcastle she was heard by Charles Hallé, who offered her a series of return bookings. Through these she met Carl Rosa, manager of a prestigious opera company, and when asked by him to sing a ‘top C’ she gave him a ‘top D’. She made her début with the Carl Rosa Company in Liverpool on 15 January 1887, in The Bohemian Girl. Later that year Fanny’s father James died, but having seen three of his daughters on their way to operatic success. In 1889 Fanny, her fiancé, the noted bass, Charles Manners, and her sister Lily made a triumphant return to The Druid’s Hall, Redruth. The packed event was a both a celebration of Fanny’s success and of her Cornish roots.
In 1892 Charles Manners and Fanny were married. Fanny went from success to success as an operatic soprano. In 1892 she and her sister Lily sang in the first English performance of Tchaikovsky’s Yevgeny Onegin. Fanny sang many roles, including Wagner, but she was most suited to those like Cio-Cio-san, the tragic heroine of Puccini’s Madam Butterfly. Later, she and her husband formed the Moody-Manners Opera Company which operated from 1898 to 1916.
Most of Fanny’s performing life was spent touring Britain but she also travelled abroad, notably to North America and South Africa. There in 1897, after a concert, expatriot Cornish admirers followed her back to her hotel. A newspaper reported ‘There was an assemblage of enthusiastic but strangely silent and peaceful Cornishmen; this congregation of robust Romeos waited for their Juliet to appear upon the balcony…To the silent she sang Cornish songs. And as she sang, these big men of Cornwall wept.’ She was presented with a tiara with the Cornish coat of arms picked out in diamonds, which was donated for auction in the Second World War with the proceeds going to the Red Cross.
Although she travelled the world Fanny was still seen as a ‘Cornish maid’ and regularly reported in a positive, almost avuncular way by Cornish papers. Her reputation, repertoire and audience were international, but her identity was Cornish, and her success, and that of Lily and Hilda, grew from the Cornish musical environment.
Laura Alex Smith published an interview with Fanny Moody in the Cornish Magazine in 1898 which provides an insight into the singer and her world.

Wrapping up the day in today's Australian Open was the Quad Wheelchair Doubles finals match between Donald Ramphadi/Guy Sasson, who advanced after first seed Sam Schroder/Niels Vink's withdrawal that happened during the latter's singles semifinal match, and Andrew Lapthorne/David Wagner, who stunned second seeds Heath Davidson/Robert Shaw 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals earlier today after being rained out yesterday. Knowing both pairs, this should be an exhilarating encounter, but a little experienfe might have helped Andy/David while Donald/Guy fought all the way out.
Andy/David had a dominant start in the first set before Donald/Guy started to absorb some pace and even some things out midway. Right in the second game, the latter already faced a break point until Guy's forehand winner right at the deciding point helped putting his and Donald's name into the scoreboard by holding to 1-1. After Andy/David held their service game to 2-1, Donald's forehand errors created the former's break point before their pass converted it to 3-1. Somehow, after consolidating their position to 4-1, Andy came up with a forehand winner for the equalizer to 4-1* 15-15 before David came up with a volley to create their break point. It was then converted (5-1) after Guy's failed down-the-line shot.
However, in contrary to the first five games, where Andy/David appeared more aggressive and Donald/Guy seemed to be erratic, the latter pair suddenly had some inspired return games, increasing their anticipation while putting some more weight on their shots. Donald's cross-court forehand slice secured a crucial point winner before Guy came up with a topspin forehand winner for a crucial equalizer. It was followed by David's double fault before Guy's failed smash saved one of those points, but it was insufficient to serve the first set breadstick as Donald's forehand finish resulted in the break of serve to 5-2. Donald/Guy then minimized the gap by holding their serves to 5-3.
The next two games became intriguing, considering the direction of the match could have gone either way. This time, while Andy/David should have served for the first set for the second time, Donald/Guy dug deep, with Guy's backhand winner making a significant damage to *5-3 30-30 to precede Donald's forehand winners that created and converted the break point (5-4). Subsequently, Andy/David had ideas, with David's volley securing them the 2-point lead after Guy's failed volley before the set point was created due to Donald's netted volley. Thanks to a working drop shot, the set point was converted for Andy/David to break for the first set 6-4, allowing themselves to be ahead in this match.
Senior German officers - Rear Admiral Wagner (centre) and Admiral von Friedeburg (right) at the British camp on Luneburg Heath to sign the “Instrument of Surrender of the German armed forces in Holland, northwest Germany, and Denmark,” Germany, May 4, 1945. At 18:30 British Double Summertime, at Lüneburg Heath, south of Hamburg, Field Marshal Sir Bernard Law Montgomery accepted the unconditional surrender of the German forces in the Netherlands, northwest Germany including all islands, in Denmark and all naval ships in those areas. The surrender preceded the end of World War II in Europe and was signed in a carpeted tent at Montgomery's headquarters on the Timeloberg hill at Wendisch Evern. A German delegation arrived at his tactical headquarters by car on 3 May, having been sent by Großadmiral Karl Dönitz who had been nominated President and Supreme Commander of the German armed forces by Adolf Hitler in his last will and testament on 29 April. Dönitz did not think it appropriate to negotiate personally with a field marshal as he had become the head of state following the death of Adolf Hitler. He therefore sent the delegation headed by the new Commander-in-Chief of the German navy Admiral Hans-Georg von Friedeburg.
