The Causes of WWII

The origins of the Second World War (1939-45) may be traced back to the harsh peace settlement of the First World War (1914-18) and the economic crisis of the 1930s, while more immediate causes were the aggressive invasions of their neighbours by Germany, Italy, and Japan. A weak and divided Europe, an isolationist USA, and an opportunistic USSR were all intent on peace, but the policy of appeasement only delivered what everyone most feared: another long and terrible world war.

Finnish soldiers nicknamed DP light machine gun as "Emma" after popular folk song written by Väinö Siikaniemi. when plate-shaped magazine of this light machinegun rotated on top of the weapon during shooting just like record in record-player.

Thousands DP machine guns were captured by the Finnish army in the Winter War and the Continuation War and partially replaced Finnish made Lahti-Saloranta M/26.

Suomalaiset saivat talvi- ja jatkosodan aikana sotasaaliiksi tuhansia pikakivääreitä että se syrjäytti rintamakäytössä suomalaisvalmisteisen Lahti-Saloranta M/26-pikakiväärin toimintavarmuutensa ansiosta.

An Ethiopian resistance fighter photographed in 1941. Patriotic resistance persisted throughout the occupation despite Ethiopia's military collapse in 1935–1936 after the Second Italo-Ethiopian war. From the beginning, many patriotic Ethiopians were committed to carrying on the fight, despite the military might of the occupying Italians. The struggle continued for another three years until most of Ethiopia was "pacified" just before the outbreak of the Second World War. However, the Arbegnoch (Ethiopian guerrillas) were still in control of nearly a quarter of the Ethiopian highlands through late 1939. By the eve of World War II, they were still in control of Harar and the Galla-Sidamo Governorate and remained active in Italian East Africa from 1936 until 1941. In 1941, during World War II, Ethiopia was occupied by Allied forces, mainly from the British Empire, in the East African Campaign, but an Italian guerrilla war continued until 1943. The ATLANTIKWALL in Raversyde is one of the best-preserved remains of the German defensive line during the First World War. Thanks to its exceptional preservation, for decades the ATLANTIKWALL was carefully walled in and today it is the only intact original wall from the 1914-1918 world war that can be found in an urban environment.

Although some of the officers and reinforcements came from other regions, the combat troops of the Rukajärvi Front were mainly made up of men from parishes in Ylä-Savo, Pielisen Karjala and Kainuu.

The soldiers, mostly farm workers and foresters, were competent and capable fighters. They were used to life in the wilderness and surviving in harsh conditions. Sleeping in the open or making a campfire, even in the coldest of winter weather, caused no problems.

The Rukajärvi Front is also known for its fine commander, Knight of the Mannerheim Cross, General E.J. Raappana. The commander valued every one of his soldiers, and he was respected by all his men.

Despite heavy losses, Finns kept the positions they achieved in Rukajärvi up to the end of the war. •••••••• Konepistoolimies vartiossa Rukajärven suunnalla, 4.5.1942.

Jatkosodassa Rukajärvellä taistelleet joukot oli koottu Pielisen-Karjalan, Kainuun ja Ylä-Savon alueilta. Osa upseereista ja täydennysjoukkoja oli muualta Suomesta. Sotilaat olivat taitavia taistelijoita, maaviljelijöitä ja metsätyöläisiä, jotka tiesivät miten selviytyä kovissa olosuhteissa. He olivat tottuneet liikkumaan luonnossa, yöpymään taivasalla tai tekemään nuotion kylmimmällä talvisäällä hetkessä.

Rukajärven suunta tunnetaan myös sen taitavasta komentajastaan, erämaasodan taitajasta, Mannerheim-ristin ritari kenraalimajuri E.J. Raappanasta. Hän arvosti jokaista yksittäistä sotilastaan ja oli korpisotureidensa kunnioittama esimies.

Taken by the German photographer Willi George in the summer of 1941, one of his unauthorised series of photographs that shows life in the Warsaw Ghetto. The Warsaw Ghetto was the largest of the Nazi ghettos during World War II and the Holocaust. It was established in November 1940 by the German authorities within the new General Government territory of occupied Poland. At its height, as many as 460,000 Jews were imprisoned there, in an area of 3.4 km2, with an average of 9.2 persons per room, and forced to survive on meagre food rations. From the Warsaw Ghetto, Jews were deported to Nazi concentration camps and mass-killing centres. In the summer of 1942, at least 254,000 ghetto residents were sent to the Treblinka extermination camp. The ghetto was demolished by the Germans in May 1943 after the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising had temporarily halted the deportations.
