Marinette’s Lucky Charm Bracelet

So, while I was working on my next major ML fanfic I got to thinking about the lucky charm bracelet Marinette “gave” to Adrien (I totally believe that she only meant to lend it to him, but he neglected to give it back, and since it’s Adrien Marinette was just like “okay. It’s his now”.) Namely, I was wondering about who made it.

This turned into a long post, so to see who I think made it (spoilers: I don’t think it as Marinette), check below the break.

It’s pretty obvious to me that Marinette didn’t make the bracelet, for multiple reasons. 1) She clearly didn’t make it while they were playing the video game, so she didn’t make it specifically for Adrien to cheer him up (unlike his birthday gift for Marinette... boy’s got a crush <3). 2) She didn’t make it for him before he came over because she didn’t have the time. She had to rush around to remove all of her pictures of him, especially since he zipped right over after school. I think he only took just enough time to convince The Gorilla, Nathalie, and/or Gabriel that it was alright to go hang at Marinette’s. 3) She wouldn’t have made it for him before the tournament because a) she didn’t know about it, and b) he was the best player before she showed him up. And that’s saying something since Adrien beat Max, and the game was Max’s life at the time. So, even if she did know about the tournament, and had some time before meeting up to practice, she had no reason to think he’d need a pick-me-up. 4) She didn’t make the bracelet for Adrien way ahead of time and was just waiting for an opportunity to give it to him. It’s a sweet idea, and I’ll gladly read any fanfic that uses this idea. How cute would it be to read a story where she makes the bracelet and just sort of walks around with it in her pocket, just waiting for an excuse to give it to Adrien? I’ll gobble that shit right up! Canonically, though? I don’t buy it. I mean, look at this thing? Really look at it.

There’s no rhyme or rhythm to any of it. The closest thing to consistency is that there’s a pink bead at each end, and two beads between the pink ones and the large center bead. We can also give credit to the fact that the “weight” of the bracelet - largest, flat, decorated bead in the center, large pink beads to the end, and two smaller beads in between for each side - is pretty decent.

Still, does this look like something our meticulous fashion designer Marinette would make? Would it be a pattern she’d build? I don’t think so.

“She could have made it when she was younger,” I hear a lot of you say. True, but why would she still have it on her? How many of you, when you were 13, still carried and/or wore a bracelet you made when you were like 5? It was a fun project, but I doubt it was done well enough that you’d be willing to keep it on your person, even if you did keep it for.... reasons. Something that mismatched? If Marinette is still carrying it around, it has to have emotional significance. I mean, Adrien carried it around because Marinette gave it to him for luck (read as much into that as you want). Maybe if it was a friendship bracelet given to Marinette I could justify her holding onto it, but given how quickly she attached to Alya, I, sadly, don’t believe she had anyone she was close enough to for it to be a friendship bracelet.

What about a gift from Manon? It looks like something a child Manon’s age would make. I just don’t think Marinette is emotionally attached to the “little angel” enough to warrant carrying it around, and she definitely pulled it from her pocket when she offered it to Adrien.

I think the key to this mystery is the fact that Marinette specifically equates the bracelet to being good at video games.

And who does she play video games with?

That’s right. I think the bracelet has some “balance” to it, but is still kind of clunkily made because Tom Dupain was the one who crafted the bracelet for his daughter.

Here’s how I see it going down:

Tom comes home from cleaning up the bakery to find Sabine dealing with a mopey 5yo Marinette. Tom tries to cheer his daughter up by offering to play a video game, but it just makes things worse. Marinette isn’t good at video games no matter how much she plays with her dad, and her 5yo brain doesn’t get that she’s not as good simply because she’s young and inexperienced. Playing video games is the thing that JUST Tom does with Marinette, so he’s devastated that she doesn’t want to do it anymore. Sabine and Tom manage to do one of those silent conversations people who have known each other for a while can do, and Tom shifts gears. He asks Marinette to show him how to make jewelry since she already has her beads out. After Marinette gives him a lesson, Tom decides to make a bracelet. Sabine cuts him a length of red yarn, since red was Marinette’s favorite color before it became pink. Tom then puts on a huge production - with some assistance from Sabine - in finding the Perfect BeadsTM for his bracelet. It gets Marinette’s attention and makes her excited to help him finish the bracelet. Once it’s completed, he gives it to Marinette, telling her that Sabine knows a little about Ancient Chinese magic, and she had taught him a little bit. With that knowledge, he made this bracelet, which will bestow good luck on any video gamer who wears it. Marinette excitedly asks if they can try it out. The Placebo Effect instantly kicks in. The added confidence sharpens Marinette’s focus, reflexes, and eye-hand coordination (I believe being Ladybug does the same thing since she was still Goofy and Clumsy Marinette when she first became her superhero persona; it’s the confidence that gives her the grace, etc.). Marinette becomes 1000% convinced the bracelet helps her play games better, and always wears it. She does quickly improve now that she has the confidence and focus, and their Father/Daughter bonding goes Next Level. As Marinette got older her belief in lucky charms, Ancient Chinese MagicTM, etc. waned. Even though she knew it was practice, not the bracelet that made her good, she still kept it on her always for a few reasons. 1) Her father made it for her to try to cheer her up. 2) It was a nice reminder of the love her parents had for her whenever she felt down and need a confidence boost. Sort of her own WWJD bracelet... 3) There was always a nagging thought in the back of her head that MAAAAAAYBE Tom wasn’t lying and it WAS a magical good luck bracelet. In the end, she was willing to give it up to Adrien, because, like Mary Poppins, another child was in more need than her. Plus... it’s Adrien. She’d give that boy the world if it would cheer him up.

So, uh, yeah.... that’s my headcanon about the origins of Marinette’s Bracelet. And now I reaaaaaaaally want to see that! Come on, Fanartists, pleaaaaase draw this? And heck, Fanfic Writers, get in on this too. I’d love to read your take!

The Falcon and the Winter soldier just makes me more frustrated and sad every episode because of what the writers did to Steve in Endgame. Really. I’m heartbroken.

I can’t believe I’ve spent seven years reading fanfiction with Steve and Bucky living together in Brooklyn, helping each other to deal with their PTSD and nightmares, cooking together, arguing, going out for coffee together, having Natasha and Sam over as they brought donuts; and now I watch Bucky living alone, sleeping on the floor, the kitchen is empty, and there is no one to comfort him after his nightmares. No one to hug him, give him advice, comfort him.

You killed Natasha, you made Steve abandon him, and Sam is not really a friend yet.

I hope at the end of the show, Bucky finds Alpine and starts taking care of her. He realises he's not just good at killing, he can take care of living beings. Alpine relaxes him, and gives him love and affection, and doesn't require him to talk about his trauma. She doesn't judge him either (unlike his SHITTY therapist). Plus : cat therapy !

So far, the only thing I don’t like about “The falcon and the winter soldier” is the consequences of Steve’s SHITTY ending in Endgame. I plan on writing fanfic to fix many things about it, but first... It think once all the episodes have aired, I’ll go cleanse my soul and read the “Not easily conquered” series and CRY because it is stunningly, achingly beautiful.

I do wonder what the authors are doing right now. Are they writing using another ao3 account ? ARE THEY ALIVE? Are they published authors and we don’t even know ?

I have just finished watching the first episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and I really liked it. It takes the time to establish things, to let Sam do his thing, have action and also be with his family. We really see Bucky in his daily life, trying to adapt, trying to make amends, trying to connect to people. Hell, he got a date when Steve never could. But he’s also so lonely. We really see the fallbacks from “Steve” ’s decision to go live in the past and... It made me so sad and so freaking angry. Steve abandoned Bucky. It’s pure and simple.

I might ship Stucky, but it doesn’t mean I don’t value friendship. Actually, friendship is one of the most important things for me. Steve and Bucky were childhood friends, then brother of arms. Steve planned to walk from Italy to Austria, with almost no training except basics, no bulletproof gear, no real shield, no real helmet, on the off chance that Bucky would still be alive and could be saved. Steve went from “I don’t want to kill anyone” to “I won’t stop until all of Hydra is dead or captured” when Bucky fell from that cliff. He mourned him. He crashed the Valkyrie while still being inside when Peggy was right there asking for his coordinates and he could have jumped. Steve was clearly suicidal, not trying to survive. He could have tried to have this life with Peggy after the war, and he didn’t try. He chose death. When he was defrosted, he couldn’t move on. He still acted recklessly, with little regard for his own safety. He couldn’t follow Natasha’s suggestions to find someone to date. He tried a bit with Sharon in Captain America : the Winter Soldier, but the deleted scenes and that kiss with her felt very forced and awkward and I died from second-hand embarrassment. He grieved Bucky until the Winter Soldier’s mask came off and Steve recognised him. Sam told him “He’s not the kind you save, he’s the kind you stop”. But Steve never gave up on Bucky. He fought him on the helicarrier, but always tried to bring him back, and never tried to kill him. He believed Bucky could return to him. He believed Bucky could recognise him, get his mind back, get his life back, be freed from Hydra and be with him again. Steve was defrosted in 2011. He spent three years in the present, without Bucky. After being saved from drowning in the Potomac, he looked for Bucky for more than two years. Then Civil war happened and Steve still believed in Bucky, he fought for Bucky. Steve lost half of the family the Avengers were, he opposed and fought half of his friends FOR BUCKY. He brought Bucky to Wakanda and they were surely happy there. Then there was the snap and Bucky was gone for five years (and Sam too !!!!) and Steve told everyone to move on but he couldn’t. Though he had evidently moved on from Peggy’s death. She had been dead and buried for years before Thanos appeared.

And you want me to believe that Steve, who loves Bucky so much he did everything I wrote above, is going to go back in the past, fuck up a timeline or two, to marry someone who had had a full and happy life, with a husband and children, an amazing woman who had the time and strength to grieve Steve and move on from him ? That he is going to marry a woman literally living in the past ? A woman he saw in her last years and he buried ?

When Bucky has just returned, HE IS RIGHT THERE ? Bucky, unlike Peggy, didn’t get to live his life. He was brainwashed, tortured, turned into a killing machine. Bucky was given a second chance. Bucky can live the life he never got. Steve can be with someone he has deep affection for, someone with shared life experience, he can be with his best friend from childhood. The writers wanted to keep it heterosexual ? FINE. (No). Steve could have perfectly returned to the present and found someone new to date. He would have been with his friends. He would have been with Wanda, with Sam, with Bucky. But that’s not the choice the writers made.

They made Steve abandon Bucky, his childhood friend, (one of) the person(s) he loves the most in the world, someone who was essential to his development as a human being but also as Captain America.

I saw Bucky waking up from his nightmares, alone in a flat. There was no one there to comfort him. The entire time Bucky has scenes, I imagined how different it would be if Steve had been there. They would have been flatmates in Brooklyn. There would have been a bed, the appartment would have been decorated. There would have been pancakes on the kitchen counter. Steve could have helped Bucky. But no. Bucky is lonely. Trying to recover on his own. His therapist said she’s the only person he called in a week. You think he made a real friend but he’s trying to make amends because he killed his son. Guilt is eating him. He hasn’t replied to Sam (and I am so glad Sam is trying to take care of Bucky, at least check on him, since they were both Steve’s friends).

Steve abandoned Bucky. Bucky is lonely. And I am angry.

Friendship is so important. I met my best friend when I was 12. We became good friends when we were 14. We’re 26 now, going on 27. The age these two were when they went to war. If my best friend died, I would be devastated. If she abandoned me, I would be devastated and FURIOUS, I would be so angry at her.

I can’t imagine how Bucky feels about Steve leaving him alone in this new and surprising world, to fight off his own demons and nightmares. They said “til the end of the line”. Well mayyyyybe toxic masculinity and heteronormativity created the end of the line and ended the relationship for us.

Friendship is a kind of love. Amour. Amitié. I say “I love you” to my friends. In french, in english.

They made Steve abandon his friends, abandon Bucky, I am NEVER getting over it, and while I loved this episode, Steve’s absence is so obvious and heartbreaking. WHAT KIND OF DOUCHEBAG DOES THAT TO THE PEOPLE HE LOVES ?

We’ve all read the fanfics, since 2014. We know what it could have been like. Even without the queerness. But we’re not getting it on screen.

So, thank you, fanfiction writers. You are doing an amazing, necessary job. We love you. We are grateful for you. Every word you write is a gift.
