#But idk I think Zuko knew it was Sokka and that his friend was going to help him

bestie yes i have decided we are besties
don’t know why i do this but in liab the arc yes arc where sokka helps zuko escape zhao’s tent and then sokka helping zuko bathe in the log cabin i always go back and read it
there’s just something so intimate about it that it keeps pulling me in to read like every other week
Tumblr media
EYYYYYY BESTIE!!!
I’m really glad you liked that scene!! It wasn’t Sokka’s most clearly thought through moment, but it was really sweet because of how tenderly he cared for Zuko. Sokka really wanted to wash away his friends hurt and make everything better…
I think he kind of regrets it now, looking back and realizing how intimate it was after such a horrific thing happening to Zuko,,, but I think Zuko appreciated it.
Maybe the boys will get a bath again soon… one can only hope.

well since requests are open i wanted to request a zuko fic?
zuko x waterbender reader in which someone from team avatar walks in on them kissing?
i feel like it’d be funny idk lol 😂
a/n: i love this trope it’s so funny. also it’s like subtly mentioned reader is a water bender since i didn’t wanna just shove it in there awkwardly. anyway hope you enjoy!
summary: a private moment between you and your boyfriend is interrupted by your unsuspecting friends
Tumblr media
“Are you sure no one saw you come in here?”
“Yes, I’m sure,” Zuko says with a huff after closing the flaps of your tent. “You know, I’m starting to think you’re embarrassed to be seen with me.”
“You know that’s not true,” you argue with a frown. “I just enjoy having some privacy. I know those guys are going to make a big deal about us being together, and I just want to enjoy our relationship without having to deal with any prying eyes.”
“I know,” he admits with a sigh. “I’m just tired of sneaking around. Do you know how difficult it is not to kiss you or check on you after a fight with my sister? It’s torture.”
“It’s just until the war is over. There’s a lot at stake right now, and it would be a weird time to come clean. It’ll be over before you know it.”
“I hope you’re right,” Zuko murmurs with a frown, one that immediately melts away at the feel of your arms wrapping around his midsection. It’s hard to be upset when you’re smiling up at him with the purest look of adoration in your eyes. Despite everything, all of his flaws and mistakes and cruelty, you love him, and it fuels the warmth inside of his heart knowing he has someone like you. Maybe he would have joined the Avatar and his friends sooner if he knew it would lead him to you.
“At least we’re finally alone,” he notes with a faint smile before leaning down to press his lips against your own in a long awaited kiss. He hasn’t been able to give or receive affection all day, and it isn’t until now with your chest pressed against his own that he’s finally able to truly feel relaxed.
Unfortunately, you’re both too engrossed in each other to notice the rustling of your tent flaps as Sokka and Toph let themselves in without a second thought.
“Hey, y/n, Toph and I are gonna head into town, do you want to- oh, gross!” He cries after catching Zuko and yourself mid lip lock.
You both jump at the intrusion, knocking your head together on accident and groaning in unison at the impact.
“Sokka!” You cry out in embarrassment. “Monkey feathers, don’t you knock?!”
“It’s a tent! There is no knocking!” He yells back defensively, equally as upset as you are. “I can’t believe you guys were kissing!”
“We weren’t kissing,” Zuko argues, his face red with embarrassment. “We were… hugging… with our… mouths?”
“Oh, spirits,” you groan, your palm hitting your forehead in embarrassment at Zuko’s horrible attempt at lying. For a Prince, he has a terrible way with words. You’d think all that time spent with his Uncle would make his vocabulary more eloquent.
“If Toph could see she’d be very upset right now!” Sokka scolds, but the girl beside him simply shrugs.
“Actually, this works out great for me. Katara owes me five gold pieces now,” she says with a grin.
“You guys knew they were dating and didn’t tell me?!” The water tribe boy says in offense.
“I had a hunch, but Katara disagreed, so we made a bet.”
“Enough already! This is mortifying enough as it is,” you groan impatiently. “Sokka, we’ll talk about this later. For now, I need both of you out!”
After getting the two to leave the tent, you shut it closed with an irritated sigh. You’re absolutely humiliated, and you don’t think you can show your face to your friends ever again.
“So much for keeping it a secret,” the fire bender mutters.
“You,” you say with an accusatory finger pointed at the Prince, “need to learn how to lie better.”
“I know,” he admits meekly, awkwardly scratching the back of his neck. Sighing, you open your water pouch and tend to the growing bump on his head from your previous collision. You can’t stay mad at him when he looks so flustered and sweet, so instead you merely throw your arms around his neck and pull him back in for another kiss.
You can focus on coming clean later. For now, you just want to enjoy your moment of peace with the boy you love.

i read somewhere that, after the war, zuko at least hands hama over to the swt instead of keeping her in fire nation prisons 'till the end of her life. Which is nice, I think. But I'm also curious as to how that would work out.
Most notably: how do you think it'd go down if she were to meet Pakku? given they both have some sort of connection to kanna's life, the idea of them being forced to interact even once entertains me very much. like, old waterbending master pakku—white lotus member—who has grown up in a patriarchal society and actively forbidden women from training to fight, under the precedent they are somehow ontologically weaker, fragile, and belonging in the healing huts... THAT guy, meeting his former fiancé's old friend: (or current wife's if you go by canon, which, eugh) A woman who not only fought in the front lines but ended up becoming one of the most skilled, creative, and deadly waterbenders in history. How would he react when finding out that a woman came up with blood bending? How badly would Hama mind-fuck him?? Because I'm confident they'd hate each other's guts-- no way she'd tolerate him,,,
And on a similar note—how would Kanna feel upon reuniting wirh Hama and discovering what she put Katata through, in your opinion? Idk, I'm just full of puppetmaster thoughts today. Hama is incredibly interesting and I wish she wasn't handled so much like a Halloween Specisl creepy witch, (even though katara herself is handled and written pretty well in this episode, i think. but i digress.)
i mean obviously i think about this all the time. i personally think that zuko hands hama over to the swt upon katara's request, and she and aang personally deliver her on appa (sokka is not there, for the very deliberate reason that if he knew what they were doing he would very vocally disapprove). and so katara is sort of retraumatizing herself by doing this, but she also feels like it's necessary specifically because she needs to be able to look hama in the eye and tell her why they're not actually the same (especially now that she actually did bloodbend someone in cold blood). katara has the love and support and safety to step back from her anger and her pain and her grief and hang onto her own humanity and allow herself to be the bigger person even in moments of abject rage and acute trauma, and hama doesn't. hama is a victim of her circumstance, and that's part of what makes her so uniquely terrifying to katara, because katara has that same capacity to make people hurt, she has the same tools at her disposal, and she has the same justifications to exercise that power. but unlike hama, she hasn't actually been pushed past her limits. sometimes she can see the cliff's edge, and sometime she even teeters on the line, but hama was fully just shoved off without a parachute, and that's really what separates them above all. i think katara should be allowed to acknowledge that and forgive herself for that, even if hama doesn't directly apologize to her (although in my mind she does, and it's not enough, but it's also so much more than katara ever expected to hear). even if it is too late for hama, katara deserves to heal.
frankly, i don't really give a shit about pakku or his reaction to hama. i also don't actually think that he thinks woman are ontologically incapable of being talented waterbenders of whatever; he's a pretty worldly guy, the reason he clings to these traditions isn't born of the belief that they're grounded in logical evidence like sokka's is, it's because he believes in the preservation of a system that benefits and valorizes him. pakku thinks katara belongs in the healing huts because he comes from a culture that dictates that women belong in the healing huts. like, he might also subscribe to the bioessentialist logic that women are better healers and men are being fighters, but that honestly doesn't really matter, because (unlike sokka) his epiphany lies not in the fact that woman can fight, but in the fact that his role in upholding these systems has actively driven his loved ones away due to his cruelty. he decides to be kinder, to women and in general, because he realizes that being an asshole has negative consequences. but frankly, who cares what he thinks of hama. realizing that your sister tribe in the south deserves aid and protection after being subjected to a century of genocide is kind of too little too late imo. unlike katara, sokka, aang, or kanna, who can approach this situation from the perspective of being a genocide survivor who even remotely understands hama's trauma, pakku really has no place in this conversation to me.
as for kanna...... god. hama/kanna reunion is genuinely one of the most heart-wrenching concepts to me in all of atla. as a sidenote, hama/kanna fanfic goes so hard every time. there's a total of like 15 fanfics for them on ao3 (last i checked) but they're all sooooooo. fucking delicious. tide locked........... ugh. anyway. i cannot fathom kanna's reaction upon learning that her closest friend once upon a time is not only alive, but also a convicted felon, for crimes including but not limited to manipulating her granddaughter, violating her (and sokka's) bodily autonomy in cruel and perverse ways, and forcing her to participate in that mode of violence in a way that traumatized her forever. even if you don't read them as former lovers (although it is indubitably better that way) it's so gut-churning. kanna lost so many people over the course of her life, and to learn that one of them has returned but in the worst way possible must be mind-boggling and distinctly unreal. like how do you even process that. first, how do you process how much pain she must have went through to become the kind of person who is capable of doing this, and then, how do you process the knowledge that the person you once loved most in the world irreparably hurt the person you now love most in the world? obviously she would always prioritize katara's safety over anyone else's no matter what, but god. kanna has led such a fascinating and impossibly difficult life, and it's not over yet.

okay at this point we're gonna have to accept that any attempts of a live action ATLA will always be cursed and will never be a good alternative to just watching (pirating cause fuck nickelodeon) the cartoon because what the fuck do you mean they're taking out gigantic chunks of Sokka, Katara and Aang's arcs/development/characteristics, showing the genocide at the Southern Air air temple and more of the Agni Kai between Zuko and Ozai while simultaneously having the gall to say "I mean, the characters, we had to dimensionalize them-"
Tumblr media
The Big Netflix Avatar: The Last Airbender Producer Interview: 'This Is a Remix, Not a Cover'
Tumblr media
There are certain scenes that you never saw in the original, whether it's the attack on the Southern Air Temple or the Agni Kai between Ozai and Zuko. And those are things that I knew we needed to see in order to make it feel much more grounded as a live-action show. So it was about feeling your way throughout the process. Where can we take the story into the new directions that still feels true to the spirit of the original? And that's what it all comes down to, making sure it feels like it was Avatar in spirit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bending the Rules
And going back to those narrative liberties, was there anything in particular where you were like, “no, this is set in stone. This can’t change”?
AK: There's a lot of things like that, starting with the characters. I mean, the characters, we had to dimensionalize them, but there are certain core ... I would say there's a core DNA to the characters that you don't want to mess with, whether it's Aang, like I said, his childlike goofiness, his sense of humor, the burden of his responsibility, Sokka and his humor and his pragmatic outlook on life, Katara's warmth and her optimism. Those things had to carry through into our version. So you start with the characters, and you say, "What's the essence of the characters that got a big change? And what's the room where we can expand it a little more?" The cartoon, for as great as it was, was 15 years ago. And so, things have changed. There are certain roles I think that Katara did in the cartoon that we didn't necessarily also do here. I mean, I don't want to really get into a lot of that, but some gender issues that didn't quite translate.
My friend just watched it for the first time, and she's like, "Sokka's an asshole." I was like, "Yeah, no, he kind of is."
JR: Yeah, especially in the first season.
AK: Yeah. So we had to guard against that kind of stuff. And so, those are things that aren't really changing a character as so much as updating them a little bit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think one of the big questions is, despite all the remixing, is the point A and the point B still the same as the original?
AK: Pretty much. Yeah, I mean, I think the state of the world and the stakes of the world are still the same. So we decided to make Aang's narrative drive a little clearer. In the first season of the animated series, he's kind of going from place to place looking for adventures. He even says, "First, we've got to go and ride the elephant koi." It's a little looser as befits a cartoon. We needed to make sure that he had that drive from the start. And so, that's a change that we made. We essentially give him this vision of what's going to happen and he says, "I have to get to the Northern Water Tribe to stop this from happening." That gives him much more narrative compulsion going forward, as opposed to, "Let's make a detour and go ride the elephant koi," that type of thing. So that's something, again, that's part of the process of going from a Nickelodeon cartoon to a Netflix serialized drama.
And they say in regards to the original creators leaving: "But sure, having them leave was a blow. And we had to think about whether or not the vision that we had set forward really reflects and honors the spirit of what they had created. And we felt like it did, so we went forward with it. " idk y'all should've taken the hint goddamn ...
Tumblr media
AK: But sure, having them leave was a blow. And we had to think about whether or not the vision that we had set forward really reflects and honors the spirit of what they had created. And we felt like it did, so we went forward with it.
Tumblr media
If you could send fans who are anxious about the live-action show any message, what would it be?
JR: I think, as a fan of the show, they're going to get the live-action version of the show they've always hoped they would get.
Albert, anything to add?
AK: This is the version of Avatar that I would want to see as a fan.

Episode 2 of ATLA LA
THERES MY BOY ZUKO’S EXPLOSIVE RAGE
"He's a coward!" That's part of his character arc, Zuko. Just like yours I'd growing hair.
"[Before] you kill someone?" And then Aangs sigh of grief feels so on brand.
Also, aang, baby, I know you want to avenge your family but you have to know you are allowed to be a child. Even in war.
"Idk about you, but I can't go back" paralleled with "No! I will never turn my back on people that need me!" (Painted Lady)
Gran Gran giving Katara the scroll instead is such a nice touch. Because Gran Gran was always proud of her "little waterbender."
I still hope Katara steals a scroll though. It feels important to her character. Where she feels she's right, beyond logic or practicality. But she morally feels in the right. Which we see her demonstrating a lot in the original series.
Aang's apology to gyatso 🥺
"I bet you taste like chicken." Sokka. I don't think there's chicken in the poles.
Zuko raging at his Uncle trolling him is perfect. And then him bringing in logic/his "General" ideology.
Zuko doesn't have tact Iroh.
IROH GETTING OFF TASK FOR FOOD IS SO ON BRAND
LADIES WITH MURDER FANS
Suki, my love
The wariness of the Kyoshi Island leader seems genuine to the original source
"I know I don't belong here. Thats something I've been feeling a lot lately."
"If I can learn to be the Avatar, maybe I can bring the place I knew, a world where people are happier, back."
I truly think Aangs actor has nailed his character. It feels so genuine and accurate.
Kyoshi didn't benefit from the kindness of strangers, she terrified them if I remmeber correctly.
SOKKA, STOP TRYING TO GET PUSSY.
Him stumbling because of a pretty girl omg.
Aang laughing at Sokka. Yes, he's a little more serious, but are we all watching the same show???? He still has a sense of humor, he's still a little shit <3
Sokka covering himself like a blushing maiden, omg
Aang is such an optimistic. "It's more than you knew before, though, right?"
Yes, Katara! Tell him he can't avoid the responsibility. "We're not going anywhere. "
AND THEN THE TARGET PRACTICE
My sweet children.
Sokka is unimpressed with bending. Since 2005.
Katara saying he'll save the world by making connections. Because it's true. We learn throughout the original series that there's good and bad everywhere. Primarily, because of Aang connecting with others.
Zuko’s crew dissapointing him 20 years ago, and now.
Suki's stealth feels like a nice touch. Pretty girl just shows up all the time.
WHERE ARE SOKKA'S CHARACTER FLAWS
At least he seems a little arrogant and tooting his own horn too much.
He might not be sexist, but his masculinity is still fragile in the first half. Feels important to acknowledge that.
Humble that man Suki. Thank you.
HE STORMS OFF! What a little bitch. Love him. He's so pathetic.
Aang terrified of hurting people, and seeming so hurt by people being afraid of him. The doubt!
"How many people will I hurt??"
My boy, this is war. You can do it. You have so much to learn.
Sokka. I expect an apology and DRAG.
Sokka loves getting beat up by women.
Ew. Wait. Why is fighting always so flirty.
Aangs inner turmoil. Aang asking for help.
Here comes the SPIRIT REALM. NO TOILETS, ONLY SPIRITS.
"There's a lot you don't know." No shit, Kyoshi.
Zuko having a reflection about his banishment paired with, "Sometimes hope can be a cruel thing."
Solka is so enamored about being tackled.
WHERE IS THE KYOSHI DRAG
Suki taking off her makeup and armor, potentially symbolizing her showing herself to sokka as a girl not a soldier. Showing her insecurities, allowing her vulnerability.
Aang, now is not the time to talk with your former life.
Kyoshi mentioning roles of the avatar without including, "human," "friend," feels so intentional. Because Aang just wants to be human. He just wants to be himself, but the Avatar cannot afford that.
The pai sho anecdote, omg
Strong leader leady!!! What a bad bitch.
ZUKO IF YOU HURT KATARA I SWEAR TO AGNI
Katara double checking on Aang before going to fight on Kyoshi in the LA vs thr North Pole.
"But, what if I hurt someone along the way??" Poor airbender just wants to live a peaceful life. My boy, it's not your fault. You were born too late. However, you are the only one to fix this.
"Being the Avatar means putting your duties above all else. Even your life!"
Kyoshi. He's 12. He just woke up. Aang needs an adult. Aang needs a protector. In the animation and LA. Katara. Your role in his life is this. Protect his gentle spirit.
SOKKA USING THE FAN
BUT WHERE IS THE DRAG
Katara. Honey. You can't fight a small army.
I love seeing her PTSD being accentuated in the LA is so amazing.
Avatar shape shifting carries from animation to LA I see. Does this count as drag? You think Aang identifies as genderfluid?
Aang is constantly fainting. He's always confused but rolling with it. He always feels guilty. He NEEDS love.
"..a reason to believe again.."
YES
Give aang recognition and respect despite his mistakes and flaws. He's a child and he's doing great, for all that he is.
"Thank you.. for bringing the world to me."
I can accept the lack of drag if I see Sokka fighting like a Kyoshi Warrior with a murder fan.
Kyoshi = Scary Lady
"Don't worry, kid. You don't have to do this alone."
Such a pissing match between Zuko and Zhao.
Sokka feels okay, a little bland. Zuko’s character needs to be more dramatic. Once again, Aang's character feels amazing.
Aang this episode has had to come to terms with the idea that his life is not his own. His right to live is a privilege. His existence is transactional. And he will never know the peace he craves for long intervals.

alright living up to my reputation as a tipsy anon :) how about that halloween party idea I mentioned? is it original? no. do I wanna write it anyway? yea :D
also, I know I promised a part 2 on a different drabble but I didn't like that one & I (think?) I do like this one so maybe there will be a part 2 idk
---
---
"You good, buddy?" Sokka asked, laughing and patting Zuko on the shoulder as Zuko stumbled out of the porta-potty, swaying on his feet.
Zuko rolled his eyes, flipping Sokka the bird as his friend went into the porta-potty next. The massive event was winding down. A girl in a catsuit was holding back her sexy nurse friend's hair as the nurse puked in the bushes nearby. The food trucks had all closed by now. A handful of 'whooping' kids were still playing a game of beer pong at a folding table. Zuko had worried he would run into Azula tonight, but so far - no sign of her. He knew she'd started this semester, a freshman and two years behind him, but he'd yet to bump into her on campus. It had been just over six years since Zuko saw his sister - since the day he was taken away by social services and sent to live with his uncle after his father scarred the left side of his face beyond recognition on a hot stove.
Halloween was the biggest party of the year for Caldera University students - it took place just far enough into the autumn semester that everyone was desperate for a chance to unwind. Plus what twenty-something didn't love a good excuse to dress up ridiculously and drink enough booze to destroy their liver? 'A Halloween Party's a rad excuse, to put your body through mad abuse,' Zuko thought, amusing himself with the reference.
"What are you grinning at?"
Zuko turned at the sound of a piercing voice nearby. A very beautiful girl in a very tiny red dress was leaning against a tree, smirking at him. Her lips matched her dress. She was wearing red stiletto heels with straps showing off her perfect calves. Her dark hair fell across her shoulders in soft locks, and she wore a red and black masquerade-style mask. She was also wearing a headband with curling deep red goatlike horns on top.
"Here to tempt me into another drink? Or maybe into bailing on my buddy and walking back to my dorm alone?" Zuko asked, opting to ignore her question.
The girl chuckled. "Why would I do that?" She was trying to convey a sense of certainty, but Zuko heard the slur in her voice.
"Well, you're the devil, right?" Zuko said.
"Perhaps not original," the girl said. "Granted. But it's fitting, trust me." She winked. Then she walked a little closer, touching the white mask covering the left half of Zuko's face. It was just them under the trees. A shiver ran down Zuko's spine at her touch. Her fingernails were long and painted black with intricate blue designs on each of them, like flames. "And you're what - hiding a horrible deformity?"
Zuko glared. "The Phantom of the Opera is a very popular book."
"Most people have only seen the movie," the girl said. Her hand was still on Zuko's face. "But I get your point." She narrowed her eyes, peering at him through her masquerade mask. "Do I know you from somewhere?"
"Don't think so," Zuko said. Then he frowned. "You seem kind of familiar too."
"Oh trust me," the girl said. "I'm not the kind of person you'd forget." She laughed, and it was a surprisingly cute sound, soft and uncertain. So far this girl had come across as cold, maybe even a little mean. "I'll admit I'm new here and I haven't met a lot of people worth talking to. Do you want to go back to my dorm with me?"
Ten minutes later, Zuko found himself in the cleanest dorm room he'd ever seen. Unlike his and Sokka's shared space, there were no clothes or books scattered across the floor or on the desks. The single-bed dorm was so spotless it would be easy to mistake it for empty. Zuko sat on the bed while his mystery friend dug in a drawer, producing a bottle of Kors Vodka, Gold Edition.
"You have expensive taste," Zuko said as she sat beside him on the meticulously made bed.
The girl laughed, taking off the lid and drinking from the bottle. "Well, consider yourself lucky I like you." She handed him the bottle. "Normally I'm rather stingy."
Zuko smirked, taking a drink. "You must not have met many people worth meeting here."
The girl frowned, looking down as she took the bottle back. "No, not really. Then again, I have a way of chasing people off."
Zuko moved a little closer on the bed, instinctively putting a hand on her knee. "I'm not going anywhere."
The girl smirked, and Zuko's insides warmed up. "No, you're not."
Zuko found his eyes wandering the girl's body now. He might have had more shame if it weren't for the booze flowing through him. As it was, he ran his hand up her thigh, pushing the ends of her skirt up. She leaned into it, touching his chest with her hand. Zuko's eyes were drawn to the low cut of her costume, showing off the edges of a black silky bra.
The mystery girl pressed her lips to Zuko's then and it was sweet for a moment - hesitant and shy. Then Zuko pushed her backward on the bed, climbing on top of her and kissing her with everything he had, running his hands across her curves and exploring her body. Zuko wasn't sure what compelled him to do it - if it was the booze or the intense attraction. He thought maybe though that something about this girl was just begging for it. The soft, surprised, sound of pleasure she let out as his hand slid between her legs, playing with her tiny panties, confirmed that she was enjoying the way he was holding her down.
"Are you always this forceful?" she panted, a challenge in her gold eyes, still encased in the mask.
Zuko grinned, sliding his fingers under her panties and teasing her as he bit down on her neck, making her cry out. "No," he said, kissing lower, until his face was between her breasts, kissing the exposed cleavage. "You're special."
The costumes make total sense, and hell yes she's special! If that's how extra horny Zuko was just by looking at her, imagine once he knows it's Azula AND has moved on from the shame of "I can't sleep with my sister (again)."
Always great to see your scenarios! I live for them!

hey! i love your zuko fics so much and was wondering if you’d like to write this, because the idea just popped up: maybe a zuko x reader fluff that takes place before/during LOK? maybe they’re reminiscing about their past adventures w the Gaang while helping out the new Team Avatar? idk it’s just that every time I see old zuko it makes me soft and emotional 🥲🔥❤️ anyways, much love! (and don’t feel pressured to do this at all, I was just thinking abt who I could submit this request to, and obvi my first choice was you 💕)
reminiscence - zuko x fem!reader
summary: just because you and your husband are retired doesn’t mean you don’t have amazing advice for the new team avatar.
a/n: this is so cute omg!! thank you so much for requesting this and thank you for much for your kind words i'm honored <33 im so sorry this took so long
sorry im posting so much lately im trying to stop slacking and publish things that have been wips for over a month sdkjfh
wc: 1.3k
warning(s): none bc i choose to ignore the news of zaheer’s plan right after this scene
-
Retirement was… nice.
You had spent your childhood fighting with the Avatar to end the Hundred Year War, a feat that was only made more difficult with your Fire Nation roots and connection to the banished prince. But all that’s well ends well, and you ended up getting your happy ending together — you had to fight hard for it, though.
You married Zuko at nineteen, three years after he ascended to the throne, and spent the subsequent years balancing your duties as Fire Lady and taking care of your daughter. Ruling the Fire Nation was a lot, but you knew you could get through anything with your husband at your side.
When he told you his plans to abdicate the throne, you were more than supportive. One of Zuko’s biggest fears was becoming his father, and by giving up his position willingly to Izumi, it guaranteed that he wouldn’t fall victim to the power-obsessed ways of his ancestors. It also gave him a well-deserved break after decades of being Fire Lord, and you were more than ready to get out of the world of Fire Nation politics. You had sat through enough meetings to fill multiple lifetimes.
But just because the two of you weren’t as involved in every day affairs of the world didn’t mean that you were completely out of it. No, that was far from the truth. You and Zuko were still some of the most important people in all of the nations, which meant it wasn’t a rare occurrence for your husband to be called off on some sort of mission.
One such mission was stopping the Order of the Red Lotus for the second time; Zuko had been part of the team that stopped them from kidnapping Avatar Korra as a child, so it was no surprise that he had been called to help for a second time. You knew even in his old age that your husband was powerful, but you couldn’t help but feel concerned about everything he was doing.
This concern was ultimately what led you to join Zuko on his trip to meet with Chief Beifong and Chief Tonraq in the Misty Palms Oasis. He had originally been against your involvement, claiming that the Red Lotus was far too dangerous, and he didn’t want to risk you getting injured in any way. You, of course, weren’t having it. “The Avatar’s in trouble, and I’d like to think I know a few things about getting out of trouble.”
One thing was certain after you arrived — it had been far too long since you had ridden on the back of a dragon. You truly adored Druk, and you felt bad for everyone that would never have the opportunity.
After conversing with Lin and Tonraq inside, you all exited to greet the new Team Avatar. If what you were told was true, then they had been through quite a lot since leaving Zaofu. For as long as you had been involved in foreign affairs, you had never met Avatar Korra nor her friends, so you didn’t know what to expect — an awestruck boy that could barely speak wasn’t at the top of your list though.
“Oh my gosh. It’s Lord Zuko and Lady Y/N. I can’t believe it!” He stared at the two of you with wide eyes, his voice getting higher and higher as he whimpered. He looked like he was going to fall over until another black-haired boy pulled him out of the way, his tone apologetic.
“Uh, forgive my brother,” he said as he put his fist against his open palm, his brother following suit. “We’re just really honored to meet you both.”
“It’s no problem,” you smiled as you and Zuko returned the greeting. It had been years since someone had reacted that way towards you, and you would be lying if you said it didn’t amuse you. “It’s a pleasure to meet you as well.”
The two boys straightened again as the taller one gestured to them each in turn. “I’m Mako, and this is Bolin. We’re Korra’s friends.”
“Ah, she’s got her own Team Avatar?” You inquired with a twinkle in your eye. “You know, I traveled with Avatar Aang years back along with my husband.”
“Of course I know!” Bolin exclaimed. “Oh, I’ve heard so many stories about your adventures, they’re all so amazing!” His eyes widened and you actually thought that he was going to fall over. “Oh, oh, could you tell us about some of the things you went through?”
“Bolin, we really shouldn’t bother them—” Mako started, but you laughed and waved it off.
“I assure you, there’s nothing to worry about. It’s not often I get to relive my journeys to such avid listeners. What would you like to hear about?”
He thought for a couple seconds then shot back up again. “What was it like when you escaped the Boiling Rock together? You guys were the first people to ever break out, right? That had to be amazing!”
You and Zuko both laughed as you shot him a look. “It was… interesting,” he said.
“By interesting, he means it was a complete disaster,” you corrected. “Everywhere something could’ve gone wrong, it went wrong. They had originally come there to rescue Sokka’s dad, but instead they found Suki and I. Then Zuko got found out and thrown into prison, our first escape plan failed, Sokka almost got found out, Azula showed up… it was honestly a miracle we made it out at all.”
“It wasn’t that bad!” he protested. “Getting thrown into prison was part of the plan, we wouldn’t have been able to get the cooler out if I hadn’t been found out.”
“I guess I can’t complain,” you chuckled. “I did get to punch you a couple times.”
“They are so cool,” Bolin whispered as the two of you went on in the background. He elbowed Mako in the shoulder and gestured towards the couple with his head. “Come on, ask them something! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity!”
“I’m not going to ask them something, Bolin—”
“Excuse me, my brother has something he wants to ask too!” Mako shot him a dirty look which quickly disappeared when you and Zuko turned to him attentively.
“Oh, um…” He coughed and scratched his head. “I guess.. is there any advice you have for us? With this whole Team Avatar thing, I mean.” You smiled at Mako and took Zuko’s hand.
“The friendships you forge during your journey are the most important thing — they’re the things that will keep you going during your darkest moments, and they will last a lifetime. There will be mountains and valleys, ebbs and flows, but no matter what, you will hold an unbreakable bond.”
You felt Zuko squeeze your hand and turned your smile on him as you returned the sentiment then nodded for him to continue. “Never take anything for granted, and trust in fate. You’re where you are for a reason — everything will end up working out in the end.”
You grinned and kissed him on the cheek, humming in agreement. “It did, didn’t it?”
-
After a few more minutes of talking with the two brothers, they went off to join the rest of their group. It was strange being on the outside of it all after how intense your childhood was, but it was… refreshing not to have the weight of the world on your shoulders anymore.
“The world’s in good hands with them,” you murmured as you leaned your head on Zuko’s shoulder.
“They all have that same fire you had when I first met you,” Zuko chuckled. You watched the four of them conversing and a smile graced your lips.
“Oh? Then I think the world’s in very good hands.”

Sparring Partners
Pairing: Zuko x f!reader
WC: 2.5K
A/N: howdyyyy I’ll be honest idk what this is besides self satisfactory fluff oops. send in some requests pls, I’m bored as heck!
Tumblr media
Never let (Y/N) and Zuko spar.
That was an unspoken rule on Team Avatar after Zuko joined the group. The group had witnessed the aftermath of their practicing one too many times; angry gatherings of flames licking at the bark of uprooted trees scattered around piles of rubble and burnt grass.
Simply put, the pair were a force of nature. That wasn’t the reason they weren’t allowed to fight, though. No, nobody really paid much mind to their destructive tendencies, as long as they weren’t too close to camp.
It was their moods after the fight was done that brought about the rule.
Zuko would slink away to his tent and brood, grumbling at anyone who ventured too close to him. (Y/N) would stay with the group, a grin stuck to her face the whole time. It wasn’t a smile that put anyone at ease, though. It was feral, the snapping teeth and predatory curl of her lips more suited to a big cat than a young girl. Even Katara, who was usually found near (Y/N)’s side, avoided sitting too close.
(Y/N) was never mean to the others, but she had a razor sharp edge to her for hours after the duel that made Aang shift nervously in his seat and Sokka focus more on being the meat guy than the sarcasm guy. Suki would stay on edge until it was finally time to split up into their individual tents. Her fighting instincts would be on alert at the scent of scorched earth coming from (Y/N), a completely different smell from the smoke from the campfire.
Zuko, of course, would be the one to start said campfire. There was a tense, almost shy set to his shoulders as the weight of wild eyes bore down on him from near Toph. Toph, incidentally, never seemed to mind the rumbling of thunder in (Y/N)’s voice after a fight with Zuko, or the way Zuko’s heart beat staggered whenever (Y/N) so much as walked past him.
Toph didn’t care if the pair sparred, as long as it would get them over their timid dance around camp. She thought it was an entertaining break in the monotony of training and hiding, and the feeling of (Y/N) earthbending with such raw emotion was as sappy as any romance story there was. It was truly hilarious to her that nobody else could connect the dots between the unbridled chaos of their fighting and their quiet moments together around a campfire.
**
It had been a few days since the last incident when Toph finally decided to ask (Y/N) what their deal was during a training session.
“So, what’s up with you and Sifu Hotman?” She asked, a slightly maniacal laugh falling past her lips when she managed to catch (Y/N) off guard and nail her in the side with a boulder. Toph had taken to using Aang’s ridiculous nickname after she realized how quickly she could get under Zuko’s skin with it. Payback for Zuko burning her feet, she had justified.
Coughing and sputtering from the blow, (Y/N) tried to deflect the question with a volley of rocks she’d been keeping suspended in the air long enough for Toph to half lose track of.
“Hey, that’s cheating!” Toph huffed indignantly, dodging the attack before shifting her feet and sending the slab of earth below (Y/N) tilting sideways.
“No, I just saw a weakness and used it,” (Y/N) laughed and leapt from her crumbling perch to position herself in the middle of the sparring area, knowing that Aang, Zuko, Suki, and Sokka were somewhere behind her. Toph wasn’t stupid, she knew (Y/N) was trying to get into a position that would make Toph go easier on her with their friends in the line of fire.
Oh (Y/N), you really think you’re clever, don’t you? Toph thought with a smirk as a plan formed in her mind, pressing her knuckles into the dirt and twisting them sharply. She felt (Y/N)’s growl before she heard it, knowing that the other girl hated when Toph locked her feet into the earth. This time, though, she kept her hold on the rock, sitting down and waiting for (Y/N) to answer her original question.
“Toph, c’mon!” (Y/N) whined, trying to free herself as Toph sat a few meters away laughing.
“Just tell me and I’ll let you go!” Toph called back, bending herself a chair from the earth with one hand while the other kept it’s grip on the rocks around (Y/N)’s ankles.
“You’re such a little jerk,” (Y/N) answered instead, looking around for something to help her. She was weak without being able to use her feet as her center, something Toph had been hounding her about forever.
“I thought best friends told each other everything,” Toph mocked as she felt the others stop fighting to watch the scene in front of them.
“Yeah, but you also told me you’d throw me off Appa because I took Momo’s seat last week,” (Y/N) replied, crossing her arms stubbornly. Toph was a stronger bender, but (Y/N) had more patience, knowing Toph could get bored or frustrated pretty quickly. That’s how they’d always been, ever since (Y/N) had been sent to live with her helpless, blind little cousin all those years ago.
“What’s going on?” Aang asked the pair, scootering over on a ball of air with a peeved looking Zuko trailing behind him.
“(Y/N)’s keeping secrets from me and acting like I won’t find out,” Toph accused, watching as Suki and Sokka joined the group. Katara, who had been assigned camp duties for the day, drew closer at the lack of fighting sounds.
“Toph,” (Y/N) warned, a sharp threat in her voice as the sound of a tree being pulled up at the roots echoed around the clearing as (Y/N) clenched her fists.
“Yes?” A challenge in her voice, her fist twisting further into the earth and sinking (Y/N) up to her waist in tightly compressed rocks.
“Enough.” Zuko stepped in between the pair, and Toph couldn’t help but notice the spike in his heart rate when (Y/N) dropped up to her shoulders in rock.
“Zuko, stay out of this. Toph’s just being a pain,” (Y/N) huffed, having a hard time breathing with the merciless press of dirt and rock around her chest.
He didn’t stay out of it of course, his heart beating faster than a bird's wings as he watched (Y/N) struggle in the ground. Toph thought the duo were nauseatingly oblivious.
She let out a frustrated growl and slammed her foot on the ground, sending Zuko sprawling flat out next to (Y/N) and encasing his hands and feet in earth.
“Fine. You can both stay here until one of you tells me, then.” Toph declared before standing and walking away from the pair. The rest of the group looked from Toph back down to their friends buried in the ground, and decided that maybe they didn’t want to end up stuck next to the pair. They walked off, promising to talk to Toph and have her fix this.
“Spirits, she’s such a little bastard,” (Y/N) mumbled, turning her head to look at Zuko. She blinked in shock, not expecting his face to be quite so close to hers. A tricky little bastard, the girl amended in her head.
“What were you two fighting about?” Zuko asked quietly, not having to speak much above a whisper with their proximity. Had his eyes always been so golden?
“She asked about what was going on between us,” (Y/N) answered, closing her eyes and turning her head away from him towards the sky. The sun pressed red kisses against her closed eyelids while the breeze played with her hair, making her feel for a moment that she was laid out next to Zuko in a spring meadow by choice instead of locked into the dirt by Toph.
“What did you tell her?” He kept his voice low, tone conspiratorial. He stared at (Y/N), the sun loving her throat and pressing kisses to her cheekbones. He thought, just for a moment, that Toph had done him a favor by locking him into this view.
A laugh, and then, “I didn’t tell her anything.”
“Why not?” He prodded, wishing (Y/N) would turn her head so he could… could what? He thought to himself, images of him wiggling closer and closing the distance between them flickering in his mind without warning. A warm blush crept up his neck at the thoughts, wishing he wasn’t so affected by their proximity.
“Because sometimes you need to let Toph think she holds all the cards so she’s a little less of a pain in the ass. And so she wouldn’t question what we really do when we spar,” (Y/N) whispered, opening her eyes and turning to face Zuko. She met his amber gaze immediately, a grin pulling at her mouth as she leaned closer to him, feeling the heat radiating off his body.
“Oh, you mean that thing where you torment me with your comments all day around camp and then try to play innocent when we’re alone?” Zuko huffed with a smile as he wormed his way closer.
“Hey, don’t get mad. I just saw a weakness and used it,” (Y/N) giggled as she leaned in towards him. Her gaze flickered briefly from Zuko’s eyes, to his lips, and then back to his eyes in a way that made him feel like the ground was falling out from under him. He leaned up to meet her halfway, falling just short of being able to seal their lips together. A soft groan from (Y/N) pulled a chuckle from Zuko’s throat, before his head flopped back down onto the packed earth.
“Such a little bastard,” he heard (Y/N) mutter a moment before her face contorted and rumbling from around them was heard.
Zuko’s hands and legs were freed from their earthen prison, letting him roll away only a second before (Y/N) rose up from her hole on a pillar of earth. She hopped down gracefully and brushed her clothes off before helping Zuko to his feet, that wild look back in her eyes.
“You couldn’t have done that earlier?” Zuko asked, brushing the dirt out of his hair.
“I can put you back, if you’d like,” (Y/N) hummed, stepping closer to him and giving him that sharp grin that sent his stomach fluttering.
“I’m fine right here, thank you,” he replied, a deep blush staining his cheeks as (Y/N) pulled him close and finally, finally, pressed her lips to his own in a slow kiss. He returned the kiss eagerly, loving the warmth of her hand cupping his jaw with gritty fingers as the other tangled in Zuko’s mop of hair.
The pillar she’d used to free herself moments before was now scraping against his back as (Y/N) traced a lazy trail of kisses along Zuko’s jaw. He let out a sound that was suspiciously close to a whimper and felt a thrill go up his spine at the glint of absolute trouble reflected in (Y/N)’s eyes when she pulled away.
“How long do you think we have until they realize we’re not stuck anymore?” She pondered, pressing delicate kisses up the side of Zuko’s throat and along the edges of his scar.
“Enough time to get a head start and cover our tracks.” His eyes moved deliberately to the forest away from camp, before flicking back to hers with a bashful quirk of his eyebrow. His breaths trembling, he tried to ignore how his nerve endings were alight with the feeling of (Y/N)’s lips on his skin.
“Very tempting, but I don’t feel like listening to Mother Katara yell at us for ‘running off and worrying the group,’” (Y/N) whispered back, pressing a kiss to Zuko’s chin before moving to pull away. His arms snaked around her waist quickly, locking her against him.
(Y/N)’s brows shot up in pleasant surprise at his actions. She had been the one to make moves from the start, more accustomed to touch that wasn’t soured by pain or anger. Zuko figured she’d like to have more physical affection from him, but the long nights spent untangling his emotions in return for a kiss were enough to keep her happy and moving at his pace. Zuko had been without a loving hand to hold for so long that he forgot how simple and sweet an embrace could be, how the pad of a thumb rubbing across bruised knuckles could soothe his aches better than any balm.
Feeling bold between the column of earth and (Y/N), Zuko leaned down to her height and pressed a gentle kiss against her lips, retreating before she could respond. The girl only grinned widely, wrapping her arms around his muscular torso. A puff of air left Zuko’s lungs as he was pulled into her strong arms, before tightening his own arms around her waist and pressing his face into the crook of her neck.
“We have to at least make Toph think nothing’s changed, or we’ll never hear the end of how she’s so right and it's everyone else who is really blind,” (Y/N) told him, pitching her voice in Toph’s bratty little sister voice she used when she won arguments.
“Let her. I’m tired of not being able to be like this whenever we want,” Zuko replied, his warm breath against the side of her neck sending a wave of goosebumps over (Y/N)’s skin. It shocked her in the most pleasant way possible to hear him say that to her, since they’d agreed to keep things quiet until he could figure out his emotions.
“Alright, but don’t say I didn’t warn you when she makes you wish you were hard of hearing,” (Y/N) laughed, nudging his head back up to face her. Her senses were filled with Zuko, the smell of smoke filling her nose as the heat from his body scorched a pattern into her heart. Their noses brushed once, twice; their lips a breath apart.
Before either could close the distance, Toph marched around their column of rock, almost slamming straight into them. In a breath, she was gone again, back the way she’d come.
“I knew it, I was so right! You losers are so blind!” She shouted to the others.
Her sudden appearance had shocked the pair apart, making (Y/N) quirk an eyebrow and pulling a rare grin from Zuko at the astounding accuracy of (Y/N)’s impression of Toph.
“Just remember, you brought this upon yourself,” (Y/N) laughed, turning to walk back to camp. Zuko’s hand shot out and grabbed her wrist, reeling her back in towards him so he could seal a lingering kiss against her mouth.
“I know, but that was worth it,” he hummed, walking alongside her back to camp, their fingers tangling together without a second thought.

Tumblr media
It was supposed to be a relaxing day. Zuko swears on Momo’s soul that he wanted it to be that way, too.
He just… didn’t see them coming. And he means that in the most literal sense of the phrase.
It was rare now that Zuko got to see all his friends at once since everyone had their own responsibilities to take care of in different parts of the world, but after about a month of back and forth letters, everyone was able to carve out a week to get together in the Fire Nation.
Zuko’s council advisors didn’t get the memo, though.
The entire week, he had been frantically running in between meetings and trying to spend time with his friends as they had planned, but the amount of running he was having to do was stretching him thin. He was exhausted, physically and mentally, and eventually, his friends decided to do something about it.
In Sokka’s exact words, Zuko “needed a break from stinky old men with opinions” for at least one full day, which would also give them all a chance to hang out. Zuko found himself caving and before he knew it, Aang was dragging him by the wrist around the capital, Sokka trotting behind Zuko to give him a push when he was moving too slow.
Zuko was careful to wear normal street clothes, forgoing his hairpiece as well in order to keep interactions with the public at a minimum. Today, Zuko was not the Fire Lord; just Zuko. And he intended to keep it that way. Even a few close calls regarding his scar left him ending the conversations with “No, his scar is on the other side, but I get that a lot,” and even one, “Fire Lord Zuko has a scar?” though the last one (rightly) earned him a weird look from the stranger. He walked away before they could think too much about it.
The boys had split from the girls about an hour into their excursion. Toph wanted to look for a specific item to bring back to the Earth Kingdom, but Sokka had kept whining about how starving he was, so the three set off to the vendors and restaurants to find food while the others venture off with Toph.
Which meant that every time someone Sokka deemed even remotely attractive, Zuko would get a poke in the back and a motion towards whatever random person Sokka had found next.
At first, Zuko thought Sokka was pointing them out for himself, which he thought was weird, considering he was ninety-nine percent he and Suki were still together, but he didn’t say anything. But it was clear these random people were for Zuko’s benefit whenever Aang started agreeing with Sokka because Zuko knew Aang hadn’t looked at anyone romantically since he’d met Katara. And he knew this because Aang had told him himself.
Zuko had no clue why they decided to spend their time trying to set him up with someone, but no number of dismissive answers from him got them to stop, so he accepted defeat.
He didn’t want to say it, but their badgering was a little irritating. It was bad enough that he had all his advisors breathing down his neck about his marriage predicament-- the predicament being that he didn’t have anyone to marry-- Zuko thought that he was going to be able to get away from all of that when he was with his friends, but it seemed they were just as obsessed as the “stinky old men with opinions” that Sokka has so easily made fun of earlier.
His advisors seemed to have it in their head that just because he hadn’t dated anyone since his break up with Mai, that meant that he was never going to again and that he would spend the rest of his reign spouseless, depressed, and with no heir. Time was ticking for them, and every day he didn’t explore his options was another day older and another day closer to death.
He would date eventually… probably. He just hadn’t met anyone who he liked like that-- certainly not enough to spend the rest of his life with. And he wasn’t interested in anyone they most likely had up their sleeve, either.
And he knew they thought it was because of his breakup with Mai. He knew they avoided her name because they thought it would bring him pain or whatever, but he was fine and he didn’t know how many times he was going to have to say that. The break-up was mutual for Shaw’s sake-- neither of them were feeling the relationship anymore so they called it off. End of story. Mai was even seeing Ty Lee, and despite their contrasting personalities Zuko had to be honest-- they were oddly perfect for each other.
He just didn’t know how many times he was going to have to explain to the same people that he had more important political matters to worry about than marriage.
But today was his off day. So, for now, all Zuko could do was listen to Sokka point at some random person whose hair was apparently nice and try to refrain from strangling the two of them whenever Aang enthusiastically backed Sokka up.
They were standing in line to get the aforementioned person a bowl of fireflakes when Zuko overheard a conversation behind him.
“... doing. Sometimes I wish I could just go to the palace and see what Fire Lord Zuko really does up there, you know? ‘Cause it’s definitely not ‘run a nation.’ Probably just sits around throwing treats to his pet lizard while the council does all the work.”
Now, it had taken a bit, but Zuko had learned to control his temper over the years. It was a skill he learned from his friends and most of all, his uncle, and he prided himself on this improvement very much. But he had had a rough week, and sometimes, there were people that just pissed him off too much to care about self-control.
Zuko worked his ass off for his country; so much that it almost ran him into the ground most of the time. His advisors were just that-- advisors. And Zuko knew that there were obviously some people in the Fire Nation that still didn’t like him, but he would be lying if he said hearing some asshole shit talk his work ethic didn’t make his temper flare a bit.
“I thought the Fire Lord had a dragon?”
“Dragon, lizard-- same thing. Don’t know why he hasn’t just killed it like the rest of his family. Do you know how many chickens I have to deliver to the palace every day for that thing? I’m gonna have major back issues when I’m older.”
Zuko’s shoulders tensed and he forced himself to take a calming breath even though he could feel his blood start to boil. He didn’t even try to conceal his glare as he turned around to glance at the mouth-breathers. He began to hope they would see him, or even better-- say something worse and give him an excuse to jump in.
Zuko faintly heard Sokka say something like “Hey man, you alright?” to his right, but the question was shuffled to the back of his mind as he stared down the guy that apparently had an issue with him and his dragon.
“Maybe he’s waiting for it to get bigger so it’ll be more impressive of a kill,” the burlier one suggested to his shrimper friend.
The shrimpy one, and Zuko’s number one hate-mail sender, apparently, scoffed. “What, like he’s ‘waiting’ for someone to come along for him to marry? Yeah right. Probably still pouting that knife girl left him. Honestly don’t blame her. I wouldn’t want to be associated with such a half-assed world leader either. Agni, he’s even worse than the Earth King that didn’t even know about the hundred-year war.”
Zuko liked to think that he could’ve eventually calmed himself down and walked away. But the moment he brought Mai into the slander, all hope for that was gone.
Zuko whipped around and barked out an aggressive “Hey,” before swinging his fist directly at Shrimpy’s face.
However, Shrimpy’s reflexes were better than Zuko anticipated. He quickly swerved out of the way, his friend doing the same out of instinct despite not being Zuko’s target, leaving Zuko’s momentum to carry him past the now-empty space where Shrimpy had been and directly into you, who had been standing behind him.
Zuko registered too late what had happened and without being able to stop himself, landed a solid punch to your nose.
A sickening crack sounded from your nose, followed by a grunt of pain from you, and the scuffling of feet on stone and you stumbled back in shock, hands flying up to your nose.
“Fuck!” you exclaimed at the same time Zuko hissed out a “Shit,” both in regards to the situation and the pain now prickling in his knuckles.
“I’m so sorry!” he fumbled out, all traces of anger leaving his body just as quickly as Shrimpy and Burly had left the scene of his crime. “I’m so fucking sorry. I did not mean to punch you, that was meant for someone else.” He could feel Sokka and Aang gaping at his back, but he kept his eyes on you-- who he now noticed was wearing a restaurant uniform of some sort-- the person he’d just punched in the face. They would get their answers later.
A short, weak laugh left your lips, but Zuko couldn’t tell if it was weak from pain or because you were trying to hide the fact that you were actually really, really pissed.
“Do you try to punch every stranger you meet?” you huffed out, tilting your head to look Zuko in the eye while still delicately pinching the bridge of your nose with one hand.
Zuko was coherent enough to register that you were really cute, but that thought was immediately interrupted by a waterfall of blood pouring out of your nose and splattering onto the pavement.
An alarmed squeak left your mouth and Zuko rushed in front of you to shove his hand under your jaw and tilt your head back. Blood trailed down your mouth and chin, and you winced at the sharp taste of it as some got in your mouth.
Zuko kept his hand on your jaw, bringing the other one up to cradle the back of your head as he walked you over to sit on the lip of a nearby fountain. “Keep your head tilted back like that-- don’t move,” he instructed while slowly removing his hands from you. “I’m gonna get some supplies really quick.”
You directed a thumbs-up at him with your unoccupied hand so as to not move your head and sat quietly, focusing on breathing through your mouth so you wouldn’t sniffle up blood on accident. Something itched in the back of your mind from when you glimpsed at your attacker, but the pain throbbing from your nose prevented you from thinking too much about it.
Zuko returned after a few minutes with some cloth, a bowl with water in it, and a pool of guilt in his stomach. Sokka and Aang trailed after him and stood awkwardly to the side as Zuko set down his supplies and began dipping some cloth into the water.
You glanced over to the side while Zuko busied himself to look at Sokka and Aang while they stood there, earning a sheepish grin and wave from both in unison. From what you could tell, since you were still mostly looking at them out of the corner of your eye, one of them had something blue on his forehead with orange robes on, the other dressed in a Water Tribe outfit that looked to accommodate for the weather of the Fire Nation instead of the Poles. You briefly wondered for a second if you had acquired a concussion along with a broken nose, or if the Avatar was really watching you try to not choke on your own blood until a cool sensation on your neck brought your attention back forward.
Zuko gently dragged the wet cloth up your throat, acutely aware of the lingering presence of his friends and the awkward tension that built while he caught a trail of blood that had escaped past your chin, before suddenly pausing in the middle of his movements.
“What,” you cautiously asked, eyes automatically flitting down to look at the top of the mop of dark brown hair that you could see.
Zuko looked up at you even though you couldn’t see his face with the angle your head was tilted at. “Nothing,” he rushed out, moving to hastily wipe the blood off your mouth and chin. “I just realized I could’ve used the fountain water instead of wasting time looking for a bowl. Sorry.”
You choked on an astonished laugh and leaned away from him as much as you could. “Please don’t clean my wound with water that people have most certainly peed in,” you begged, hoping that he hadn’t actually just gotten a bowl and stuck it in the fountain.
This confused Zuko, so he stood up, making it possible to lean over you and look you in the eye when he asked you his question.
“People pee in the fountain?” he inquired, surprisingly genuine. His head blocked out the sun for you, his eyebrow sloped up in concern so adorably that you had to physically stop yourself from staring, or worse, smiling. Instead, you took the moment to calculate-- and appreciate-- how handsome he actually was. Not that this changed the fact that he’d decked you in the nose, but it was worth noting at least a little bit. The scar that covered the majority of the right side of his face in an eerily similar fashion to the Fire Lord’s was also extremely worth noting. The itch in the back of your head vanished as you realized the possibility of who you could be talking to.
Your eyes briefly flitted up to his hair to check for the Fire Lord’s distinctive gold hairpiece and came up empty. So you quirked an eyebrow and challenged his remark. “What reality do you live in where people don’t pee in public fountains?”
A look somewhere in between horror and disgust dawned on his face as his eyes flicked to the fountain water in the pool behind you. He leaned back to stand up straight, recoiling at the image his mind conjured of someone openly peeing into the fountain completely naked and was about to respond to you when you suddenly snatched the cloth out of his hand.
He thought he heard you grumble something along the lines of “Mother of ozai, if you won’t do it, I will,” while gingerly resting the cloth against your nostrils to stem the flow of blood, but before he could do anything to make you not mad at him (or at least try), he was interrupted.
“Hey, what’s-- oh my Shu, what happened while we were gone?!” Katara exclaimed, signaling the return of her, Toph, and Suki from their excursion.
Zuko whipped his head over to the girls and backed a couple steps away from you to catch Katara stalking over to where you sat on the fountain ledge, tending to your nose the best you could.
“Uhhh... ” he attempted to explain, but Aang caved in the presence of his girlfriend and beat him to it.
“Zuko punched them in the face.”
Katara’s head snapped to look at Zuko accusingly over her shoulder from where she stood in front of you to examine your face. “What?!”
Zuko’s mouth flapped open and closed as he stammered to defend himself before Katara could get super mad at him. “Wha-- wait, it was an acc--”
“You punched some rando in the face in public? Damn, Sparky, gotta admit, didn’t think you had it in you,” Toph commented.
“It wasn’t--”
“Eh, it kinda was,” came Sokka.
Zuko fumed. “Are any of you going to let me finish? At any point?”
Sokka snickered slightly. “Sorry, it’s just too fun seeing you mad. It’s harder to piss you off these days.”
“Guys,” Katara interjected, still observing the interaction over her shoulder before turning back to you. “I don’t even know why I bothered asking,” she muttered, then kindly smiling down at you as you listened to the conversation, already having concluded from hearing your assailant’s name that you were, indeed, spontaneously punched in the face by the leader of your nation. “My name’s Katara,” she introduced.
You half-heartedly raised your hand that wasn’t busy holding the blood-soaked cloth in acknowledgment. “(Y/N).”
“Nice to meet you,” she returned. Katara then bent the water out of the bowl Zuko had brought you and covered her hands in it. “This may sting a bit.”
Katara got to work healing your nose and any other miscellaneous cuts that were formed as excess damage, and Zuko, finally freed of the bickering with his friends, took the opportunity to sit on the ledge next to you and observe you fully.
If Zuko had known someone as attractive as you had been living in the city all this time, he would’ve been visiting way earlier and way more often. You wore an apron with a restaurant name painted on it, so he assumed you worked somewhere nearby. Then with the realization that you were probably heading to work when he punched you settled over him and guilt pooled in his stomach again. He didn’t want you to get in trouble for being late or anything, seeing as the entire situation was his fault.
Zuko studied you and wracked his brain for possible ways to see you again, preferably while also not dooming his chance for a possible relationship with you any more than he already had. By the time Katara was finished with you, he had a few fragments of an idea put together.
You were feeling around your nose, easing the residual pain of having it set after Katara had fixed it. You still hadn’t looked over at him, even after Katara had left to talk to Sokka and Aang about what had happened, so Zuko decided to make his move.
He cleared his throat, catching your attention. “Um… I, uh, I’m really sorry. About.... punching… you.” Zuko winced as he finished his apology.
You raised an eyebrow at him and opened your mouth to say something.
Zuko sensed that this was going to be a bad thing and quickly beat you to the punch (pun not intended). “I, uh, I’m sorry if I made you late to work or anything,” he began, gesturing to your apron. “I can go talk to your boss or something and explain the situation so you don’t get in trouble.”
You stared at him. The thing was, you had been planning on holding your grudge for quite a bit longer, but having the Fire Lord vouch for your lateness would definitely save your ass from getting fired. And the utter guilt that molded his face into the puppy eyes you were faced with now was making it very hard to stay mad at him.
You sighed and dropped the stern façade you’d been keeping up. “That would be nice, thanks.”
Zuko nodded enthusiastically. “No problem,” he reassured. “And um,” he started, growing bashful again, “If you want to, of course, you don’t have to say yes, but if you’d let me, I’dliketotakeyouonadatetomakeituptoyou.”
By some miracle, you were still able to catch what he said. “You want to take me on a date?”
“Like I said, you don’t have to say yes--”
“Okay.”
Zuko paused. “Okay, like ‘Okay, I’m not saying yes,’ or--”
“No, okay, as in I’ll go on a date with you,” you interjected, rolling your eyes. “If you mess it up, though, I get to punch you back. It’s only fair.” you proposed.
Zuko, thankfully, was able to detect the slight hint of playfulness in your tone and laughed quietly. “Deal.”
You nodded, a smile beginning to creep up on your face, and call him naïve, but Zuko got the smallest feeling that his advisors wouldn’t have to worry about his love life for much longer.

i swish you would write a fic with zukka as rival roller derby/skateboarding competitors!
oh my god i wish i knew anything about roller derby or skateboarding 😭 all i know is that elliot page movie and the lil rundown my friend gave me abt competition skateboarding vs street skateboarding in relation to the olympics
ignoring the fact that im not an expert in any of these areas tho … like what if. what IF. zuko and sokka first meet as 12 year olds at the skate park, sokka’s got five billion bandaids that barely cover the scabs they’re trying to protect, zuko’s got pads on every joint imaginable and an absolutely ridiculous helmet. they insta bond and quickly become best-skateboarding-buddies. if they’re not skateboarding together, they’re watching videos of street skaters doing tricks.
it only takes a year and change for ozai to realize ursa’s been letting his son do Hooligan Activities. he wants to eradicate skateboarding entirely but ursa convinces him, it’s not Hooligan if it’s an official competition format! z is torn. he’s sad he can’t hang at the park anymore, and he and s both decided a while back that the competition people were boring stiffs with no creativity. but at least he isn’t losing skateboarding entirely
without the skate park bonding, z and s disappear from each other’s lives. also, zuko’s family moves away.
fast forward … hmm like 6ish years. z has Made It in the competitive skate boarding world — ozai has only kept allowing it b/c that sponsorship money got real 🤪 also zuko now has a RIVAL! they’re constantly battling for the unofficial spot of Best Young Male Upcoming Skateboarder. ppl in the community, ppl looped in the culture, mostly agree that while zuko’s technique is irritatingly flawless, his rival has this flow and artistry that just make him a joy to watch.
zuko finally meets the rival at a local comp. it’s Jet. they do NOT get along, at all, and their clash is so bad it results in zuko’s first ever scandal/bad press coverage. ozai and ursa are Not happy abt it until they realize that ppl are eating this rivalry shit UP.
fast forward another 2ish years of the media and also z and jet fueling the flames of their rivalry, z’s balancing college and competitive skateboarding. he and jet are set to face off at another competition. z’s fired up, he’s zoned in, he’s doing his usual pre-comp routine at the venue when …
“zuko?”
zuko almost wipes out just standing on his board for the first time in forever. “… sokka?”
sokka grins, comes over w/ a bro hug. “shit, dude! it’s been a long time, how are ya?”
but they’re cut off by the competition starting. “I’ll find you after,” sokka promises and then goes … to where the coaches stand?
cute, zuko thinks. bet he looks so cute mentoring some lil skateboarding tykes.
competition blah blah, zuko’s runs go well, but then Jet flawlessly executes his last run. even zuko’s a little breathless from watching him. the scores go up, jet’s clearly the winner, he shouts victoriously and then runs over to the coach’s area and … grabs sokka in a headlock and plants a big wet kiss on his forehead????
sokka has been jet’s young genius coach for the last 4 years, zuko learns. sokka’s the one choreographing jet’s routines [bro idk what they’re called]. sokka’s the one drawing the creativity out of jet, the artistry that zuko’s convinced has everyone liking jet’s skating a touch more than whatever technical perfection zuko can manage. so, in a sense, sokka’s the one standing in the way of zuko becoming the Best Sk8r Boi [of his age bracket].
zuko declares that they’re rivals. sokka humors him (also jet was watching). unfortunately for both of them, they’re bad a maintaining a rivalry when the rival in question is so. u know. cute and talented and hot when they skate oops
BOOM. skate bros-to-rivals-to-lovers (to boyfriends lol).
Send me an anymous (or not) summary of the fic you wish I would write. (maybe I will write a tidbit)

thinking about
a no hundred year old war au where zuko goes the southern water tribe with his family, and he’s grumpy about the cold.
but he’s not grumpy about spending time with katara again. (he’s ten, she’s eight and they met two years ago.)
when they see each other, they get excited and bow traditionally, then give each other a big hug.
and of course, sokka and azula tease them about it.
they tell their siblings to shut up and walk off together.
zuko tells katara about the plays he sees on ember island. “i can take you to go see a play sometime, princess katara—but only if you want to, of course,” he looks at her, cheeks pink, fiddling with his fingers. “you don’t have to go if you don’t want to.”
“i would love to go see a play with you, prince zuko,” katara tells him, her cheeks pink too.
they make eye contact, and look away from each other quickly, their pink cheeks turning a bright red.
zuko and his family spend a few days at the southern water tribe, and zuko spends a lot of time with katara there, of course. he loves penguin sledding and watching katara waterbend.
(spoiler: he thinks she’s so cool.)
when zuko has to leave, she quickly kisses his cheek and tells him she can’t wait to see a play with him. zuko blushes hard and says he’ll take her soon.
he leaves.
they write letters to each other for months (and they send each other gifts on their birthdays like they always do), then zuko comes with his family again to take katara to see a play. kya and gran gran go along with katara, and they talk with ursa on the ship (hakoda is on a hunting trip with sokka during this time, but he knows it was gonna happen and is okay with it). zuko and katara spend time together on the ship, and he tells her he can’t wait to see the play with her.
a few days later, they’re on ember island.
zuko tells her that he should hold hands with her so he can show her around better (yes, uncle iroh gave him this tip) and katara agrees (she wanted to hold hands with him anyways). he takes her to their house on ember island and shows her around. he shows her where she’ll be staying, and she tells him how excited she is to be spending time with him on ember island.
(she’s only been to the palace before, not ember island.)
she asks about azula, and zuko says that azula is spending time with her friends and doesn’t really like watching plays anyways. but he assures her the play is really good and that if she doesn’t like it, that’s okay. (she jokes that it would be a bummer if she came all this way just to not like the play, and zuko laughs and agrees with her.)
they play together and talk together until they have to go to the theater. they don’t hold hands this time, but katara loops her arm with his. ursa, kya and gran gran sit by them, but not too close—they don’t want to disturb katara and zuko’s little date (even though they both insist it’s not a date).
zuko glances at katara throughout the play just to make sure she likes it, and he thinks she does. he asks at the end of the play (just to make sure) how she felt about it and katara beams. “i loved it! thank you for taking me, prince zuko,” she hugs him.
he pulls away and slowly shows her a bracelet he had in his pocket. “this is for you, princess katara,” zuko smiles timidly. “i thought of you, and i got it...um, for you. well, actually, uh—i made it. i know, i could have done better, but i just really wanted to make you something—“
“thank you, prince zuko. i love it, it’s so pretty,” katara giggles and nudges him gently. she points to her wrist, “so, can i—“
“um—here, let me,” zuko ties it around her wrist securely, cheeks red. it’s a black, cotton string with a charm on it: a silver crescent moon connected to a gold sun.
“do you really love it, princess katara?” he asks quietly, fidgeting in his seat.
“i do,” she nods and kisses his cheek. zuko smiles at her. “and...i may have made you something as well.”
his jaw drops. “wait, what? really?”
“yeah,” katara grins and hands him a bone dagger with blue handle and a fire carved into its side. she looks at him nervously as he holds the dagger.
she rambles: “you mentioned in your letters that your cousin got a really cool earth kingdom dagger and that you wanted one, so i—i made one for you. well, my dad helped me, but—“
zuko hugs her. “this is so cool, princess katara! thank you so much!” she hugs him back, both of them feeling butterflies in their stomachs.
they get up and join their family members, and they all go back to the ember island house. then zuko admits that he has another gift for katara. “wait here,” he tells her when they’re in the living room. he runs up to his room and runs back downstairs.
“here,” zuko whispers as he blushes and holds out a fire lily, “for you, princess katara.”
“oh—thank you, prince zuko,” katara whispers, grabbing the flower as her cheeks get hot.
(yes, she knows what a fire lily means.)
they hug again.
when zuko travels with her and her family on their journey back to the south (with ursa, of course), they bicker about cloud shapes (katara swears it’s a flower and zuko swears it’s a baby turtle duck) and when it gets to be night time, they argue about what a constellation is named.
“it’s the little penguin named tuka,” katara insists.
“no, it’s a baby dragon named eyala,” zuko shakes his head.
“no, it’s not!”
“yes, it is!”
“last person to the other side of the ship has to admit that they’re wrong!” katara calls out and they race to the other end of the ship, laughing as they do so.
they tied, then played a game of elements (the atla version of rock, paper, scissors. idk if that’s the name of it though?) to break the tie.
katara won. (and zuko didn’t mind saying he was wrong all that much.)
when they make it the south pole, and they hug, it’s zuko who kisses her cheek this time. “i’ll write to you soon, princess katara,” he whispers and pulls away.
“you better,” she whispers back, and watches as zuko gets on the ship. she waves goodbye until she can’t see him anymore.
they keep writing to each other.
but then, gradually over the course of a few years (she is eleven now and zuko is almost thirteen), zuko’s letters get shorter and more vague, and they don’t come in as often as they used to.
then he completely stops sending letters by the end of the year, and she remembers how, the last time they talked in person, he admitted to her: “listen, so—um, i don’t know what’s going on with my dad—but if i ever stop sending you letters, katara, please know i had nothing to do with it. you’re my best friend—and i’ll always want to talk to you.”
(then he placed his hand over hers, his thumb stroking her skin. “you’re my best friend, and...i love you, katara,” he whispered it like it was a secret. she whispered it back, and they hugged.)
(and they had a joke only written in their letters to each other—that she was his, and he was hers. she’s gonna be honest: she doesn’t remember how the joke started, but she knows she keeps it going even when he’s not around. mostly because she thinks about it all the time. he’s her zuko, her zuko, her zuko. she’s his katara, his katara, his katara.)
she’s very worried, angry and sad all at the same time. and she never liked ozai in the first place if she was gonna be honest with herself.
as three years pass, she doesn’t hear from zuko. once, she wrote to azula asking about zuko, and azula wrote back with a vague letter that gave no information on zuko. she tried two more times and got vague responses each time. (she gave up writing to azula after the third try.)
all she found out was that ursa left, and she had to find out through her dad.
but why doesn’t anyone know what happened to zuko?
she doesn’t want to think negatively, but she’s fourteen now, and if her dad knew anything about zuko, he would’ve told her by now. she often stares at the bracelet zuko gave her when she was nine. she was six when they met and they wrote to each other until she was eleven.
she misses him.
(a messager arrives and gives a letter to hakoda. he reads it in his office. he doesn’t know how to tell katara, but he knows he has to.)
hakoda goes to katara, and tells her gently that zuko was burned and banished by ozai three years ago, and she feels sick to her stomach.
her zuko?—burned by his own father?
and he could be anywhere in the world right now?
and he could be—
no.
she can’t think like that.
she tells hakoda that she needs some alone time. he hugs her and walks out the room.
she starts writing to her friend, aang—who has an air bison—and hopes that he’ll agree to help her find zuko. and aang is also friends with zuko.
(they can find zuko, can’t they?)
unfortunately, though, hakoda intercepts the letter (the messager dropped it, and it popped open, and he recognized katara’s handwriting.)
he tells her that she can’t just leave and they argue. kya was trying to be the mediator. it did not help.
katara attempts to leave at night on a boat, and sokka catches her. he tells her, “katara, you can’t leave—“
“—oh, not you too—“
“—without me,” sokka finishes.
katara looks at him, confused. “what? you wanna come along?” she notices he has a bag slung over his shoulder.
sokka nods. “yeah, why not?”
“okay, then, come on, sokka,” katara motions for him to hurry up and get on the boat. sokka gets on the boat and informs her that he left a note for hakoda and kya.
she grumbles something like, “whatever,” in response. (she’s still grumpy about the argument with hakoda.)
she uses her waterbending to make their trip to aang’s temple faster. sokka sleeps while she waterbends, and sokka rows the boat while she sleeps. and the cycle repeats until they’re at the air temple.
aang agrees to help them (he’s also very concerned about zuko after katara tells him what happened) and they all get on appa. aang says that zuko once told him that if he ever ran away, he would go to the earth kingdom. so they head to the earth kingdom.
“i think he mentioned gaoling,” aang tells them. “so let’s head there.”
they search for a few days.
and...
they don’t find zuko.
instead, they find toph, an amazing earthebender who didn’t want to be miserable with her parents anymore.
(basically, they went to an earth rumble, and watched toph fight, and aang was like, “she’s so cool, can she be part of our group?” and sokka was like, “if you can convince her to join us, sure, why not?”)
(by the way, sokka didn’t mean it.)
(he also didn’t think aang would do it—or that toph would agree.)
either way, they ended up with a confident, blind earthbender who ‘carries her own weight’ in their group. (at least she brought a bag full of money with her. they were already running low on funds.)
(sokka has a bad spending habit.)
(plus, him, aang and toph have big appetites for their sizes.)
(seriously.)
“i heard there was a good fighter in ba sing se with a big scar on his face,” toph tells them as she picks at her feet. “they say he’s a firebender. it could be this zuko guy you guys are looking for.”
“we can try ba sing se,” sokka nods. “especially since we don’t have any other leads.”
“i hope we find him,” katara mumbles, staring at her bracelet. she’s scared—because he can’t be dead, he can’t be dead, he can’t be dead. she can’t accept that possibility. “i mean, he’s been by himself for three years, and we just found out about him. he—i hope he’s okay.”
“well, you know how zuko never gives up without a fight, katara,” aang says to assure her and to lighten the mood, “after all, you knew him best out of all of us.”
“yeah,” katara smiles a bit. “he’s so stubborn—in fact, he’s more stubborn than me.”
“okay, let’s not go that far, katara,” sokka snorts. “because you are—nothing,” sokka whistles when katara raises a small water whip and raises an eyebrow at her brother. “i mean, i wasn’t—i was just—i think you’re great, katara,” he says quickly.
“i know i am. thank you, sokka,” katara laughs.
they travel for about two months (appa needs rest, he’s not used to traveling for so long.) they make a stop to omashu mostly because aang insisted it would be a good idea (and appa needed a break too), and aang’s friend, bumi, joins them in appa. (toph is more than delighted to meet another earthbender on her level.)
all of five of them head to ba sing se, bumi talking excitedly about ba sing se and the great deserts they have. and this, of course, leads to a discussion about food, and then—of course—everyone gets hungry.
so they have to stop and make camp, and katara goes to get some water for the rice, when she sees someone sleeping on the other side of the river next to a small fire, wearing a—a blue spirit mask.
her heart races.
a blue spirit mask.
it’s—that’s—that’s zuko’s favorite ‘love amongst the dragons’ character.
it couldn’t be.
could it?
katara puts the pot down. she doesn’t hesitate to swim over, with a water whip in case she’s wrong, and quietly gets out fo the river. katara gently shakes the guy awake, cautiously trashing her water whip in case she’s wrong.
the guy sits up immediately and draws his swords at katara. “what are you doing?” he demands. (her heart beats faster—that’s his voice. it’s his voice.) “do you—wait...katara?” he sheathes his swords slowly. “is—is that really you?”
“zuko?” katara whispers, tearing up. “it’s you. oh, spirits, it’s you.”
she bends the water out of her clothes, and moves to hug him, but zuko scoots away before she can touch him.
she frowns, hurt. “zuko, why did you—“
“i don’t want you to see—it.” zuko awkwardly adjusts his mask. “i don’t—you—i want—just...katara. trust me—you’re not gonna like...it. you’re not gonna like me.” his voice breaks with vulnerability, with sadness, and katara does her best not to cry.
how could he think that?
because—
she loves him.
“are you kidding, zuko? i’m your best friend. i’m always gonna love you,” she sniffles, and zuko doesn’t hesitate to hug her tightly. she hugs back, her head in the crook of his neck.
“i love you, too,” zuko tells her softly, holding her. “i missed you.”
“i missed you, too.”
a beat.
“katara, i’ll show you...my scar,” zuko swallows.
“are you sure?”
“yes, but—but i’m just scared. i don’t want you to think i—that i’m...ugly,” zuko confesses, “i’ll show you, and then i’m, um, gonna put the mask back on.”
“okay, zuko,” katara nods and gently pulls away from his arms. she misses his warmth already. it’s been too long.
she sits across from him, watching him patiently.
zuko’s hands shake as he takes off his mask, and puts it beside him. his eyes are closed tightly.
katara gasps softly as she looks at it. her zuko—he—it must have hurt so much.
she leans forward, and carefully cups his cheek. zuko tenses up, then relaxes. he leans into her hand.
“my zuko,” she whispers, fingers brushing against his scar.
“my katara,” zuko whispers back, opening his eyes, and placing his hands over hers.
“it’s not ugly,” katara informs him as his fingers curl around hers. “and you’re definitely not ugly. my zuko—how could you ever be ugly?”
zuko stares at her, almost as if trying to see if she’s lying, almost like he doesn’t...believe her. “katara, you can’t be serious,” he gently pulls her hand away, but keeps holding it as he grabs his mask with his free hand.
“i am,” katara says, eyes soft. “i’ve never lied to you before. can...can i heal it?”
zuko frowns. “it’s a scar. you can’t heal it, katara.” a beat. “but it itches, sometimes.”
“can i...?”
“you can.”
katara summons water around her right hand like a glove. she cups his cheek with her left hand, tilting his head to the side. zuko closes his eyes and katara presses her water gloved hand on his scar. she watches as the water glows, and feels the scar change, somehow. (yes, she wishes she paid more attention to her healing classes. she knew enough, but she didn’t know everything.)
when she’s done, she puts the water back in the river. “it feels...better,” zuko admits. “thank you, katara.”
“of course,” katara grabs his hands and squeezes. “anything for you, zuko.”
they smile at each other.
then katara remembers—“i still have to get the water for the rice!” she gets up and zuko looks at her, confused.
“i’ll tell you everything later, just—please,” katara reaches a hand out to him. “come with me, zuko.”
zuko nods slowly, and grabs her hand. he gets up, and puts his mask on. “okay, katara, i’ll come with you. after all, we still have a lot to catch up on, don’t we?”
“we do,” katara smiles brightly, holding his hand, and intertwining their fingers. they go into the river, and katara puts water into the pot.
then they head to camp, both of them smiling like idiots.

uh yeah jet bby you’re definitely ashamed of what you did hate to break it to you HOWEVER I really do get why jet did do what he did bc he’s traumatised and also a teenager and so he was never going to think maturely and rationally (which like yes obvi that means he caused the problem BUT ALSO it’s not his fault he’s problematic) I just really need him to get some therapy dude
OKAY can I just say I love you showing toph as being affectionate outside of playful physical aggression?? it’s been ages since I’ve read a fic where toph has shown some form of affection that hasn’t been a punch in the arm! and I feel like that’s so important bc in the show most of the female characters are insanely talented in the art of combat and so often they then get reduce to Just being aggressive (like toph) or being overly emotional (like katara which is super ironic considering the ember island players tragic performance and how that was supposed to actively argue against katara being so one dimensional) WHEN REALLY they ARE BOTH tough and have feelings bc they’re literally human beings
yeah I have many opinions oops
I FEEL SO VINDICATED I LOVE YOU KATARA AND YOUR BIG SMART BRAIN she’s such a good actor my heart is squeezing in satisfaction oh lordy
shit. appa. fuck. goddamnit. REALLY?
omg this is so not gonna happen but imagine if zuko turned up in ba sing se and then all communication Issues are solved and he can help find appa like in the show :D
well not all communication issues but a fuck ton of them
YES RASU he’s such an icon I actually love him with my whole entire heart my flirty baby boy
lmao zuko had a crush on rasu
same.
shit. idk why but it’s so jarring to have be explicitly said that zukos death (even tho it’s fake news) is a casualty of war. like OBVIOUSLY but to have it put so bluntly is like damn. it’s like as a casualty of war, it matters fuck all that he was a prince or why he was hunting the avatar and everything that made (makes) him integral to the war effort bc in reality he really just is another kid who died in the war. and then THAT just makes you think, yeah he’s not all that special because the horrific reality is that so many people were casualties of the war and while they’re anonymous numbers on a large scale, in life they Mattered and now it’s all for naught. jesus crispy sreedie you’ve really got me grieving
FUCK YEHA QUON IS SUCH AN ASSHOLE HES DISMISSING JETS INTEL ALL BY HIMSELF THIS IS A WIN TEAM
sokkaaaa now is not the time to be bad at readying facial cues T-T
aang has so much more emotional maturity than people give him credit for fr. like there’s no way in hell I would’ve been able to regulate my emotions half as well as aang when I was 12 even WITHOUT factoring in the genocide of his nation
holy shit reho DESERVES SO MUCH FUCKING LOVE I WILL PERSONALLY FIGHT EVERYONE WHO DARES TO INSULT HIM AFTER THIS
also he’s so fucking wise “evil people don’t only belong to one nation, they are everywhere” LIKE PREACH they really fucking are war provides a platform for the worst people to shine
real talk if shen dies I’m gonna be devastated
ohoho nice like fic name drop right here
omg not zuko popping up at the MOST convenient time in the least dramatic way possible??? shocked but also not surprised bc it’s making perfect sense narrative wise
wheezing at zuko being consistently unpredictable bc ykw the only reason nobody can figure out what he’s planning is bc my boy simply does not have one!! ever!! and it’s legend behaviour actually I think it might be the reason he’s my fav character
okay okay okay at least sokka and zuko have bato with them for child wrangling purposes bc they need an adult. but oh no hakoda is aloooone
zuko you dumbass motherfucker did you just SURRENDER YOURSELF
ykw I take back what I said about him never having a plan being my fav thing about him I have come to my senses and have reconsidered.
ZUKKA KISS??? it’s tragic.
it’s so fucked up that ara and sokka are gonna become friends again bc their bfs got taken hostage but I’m here for it
HOLY FUCK SHIT YEAH SUKIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
MAI AND TY-LEE OMG MY GIRLS ALL MY GIRLS ARE COMING ITS HAPPENING ITS NOT A DRILL OMG SREEDIE YOU DONT UNDERSTAND IM GOING FERAL
A Z U L A
okay so obviously appa is under lake lagoli right
and yes I’m very relieved that shen and zuko are together at least BC NOW WE CAN GET SOME MORE QUALITY BANTER AND THATS ENOUGH COMPENSATION FOR THE TRAUMA RIGHT
RIGHT??
reunion soon :3
anyways why did I think this would actually end okay with zukka and bato off frolicking to ba sing se?? how am I that delusional?? it’s like I don’t know you
I HOPE YOU TAKE A REFRESHING NAP AND RECOVER FROM THIS DOOZY OF A FINALE BUT ALSO I AM WAITING IN ANXIOUS ANTICIPATION FOR THE NEXT BOOK ITS GOING TO BE THE LONGEST AND MOST HORRIFIC JOURNEY TO A ZUKKA REUNION EVER AND I CANNOT WAIT also bc you don’t write zuko pov that means we’re gonna get a lot more shen pov?? which I think will be really fun so that’s exciting too
LOVE YOU TO BITS AND PIECES
leekie <3
OH MY GOSH, if you keep flirting with me we might just have to tear up our divorce papers and move in together.
Hahah Hakoda’s reaction to the watchtower is exactly how I envisioned it. Sarcastic & pretend shock lol.
Katara’s honesty is finally catching up with her, getting her in trouble with the Dai Li that is. But she is a strong girl and she can hold her own, I know she’ll be ok!
Ok I love that you brought up toph because sometimes I feel like fics make her out to be a lie detecting, punching, sarcastic person and just leave it at that. But she is so much more than that, all the female characters are! I hope I can do them justice.
Zuko does have a plan!!! “Don’t let Sokka get hurt” - that’s it, that’s the plan. Haha.
I hope Shen doesn’t die… but also, I can’t make any promises.
SUKI IS ON THE WAY TO HELP SOKKA!!! & azula is on the way to bomb him lol.
Im sure it’ll be fine, I love you! You’re amazing. But I also hate you because we are divorced and GRRRRRRR, but secretly we’re still hooking up and it pretty obvious but shhhh don’t tell anyone. ;)
:D

I know ppl are yapping at you abt Dungeon Meshi so sorry but I’m joining in. Who in the Gaang (or Gaang-adjacent) do you think would enjoy the dungeon most and least? Sokka would be having a grand time, eating cool food and rescuing sisters and learning about biology and doing puzzles. I can imagine Aang on the other hand having a very bad time; even the plants are animalistic so he would feel weird about eating them. He would appreciate Senshi’s care for the ecosystem though.
idk why ppl keep saying that sokka would be laios.... like laios does say that he wishes he could take falin's place and clearly means it, but he also has the mental fortitude to step back and look at the situation more rationally when he needs to. he clearly loves falin a lot, but he's also able to pace himself and acknowledges not to push himself beyond his own limits, so that he can make grand sacrifices when the time calls for it (and even then, he pretty much knew that losing his leg wasn't gonna be permanent). like, my point is, if katara got fucking eaten by a dragon, sokka would not even bother going back up to the surface to the regroup. he would not be able to approach the situation rationally whatsoever. laios wants to take falin's place because he doesn't want to see her in pain (and also because i'm sure there's a part of him that just wishes that he could be a really cool monster too, lol), but sokka would want to take her place because he fundamentally believes that his role in life is to sacrifice himself for her?? and he would feel like he had failed in some grand, existential way if she sacrificed herself for him (but also, falin is not katara, and so katara wouldn't make those same sacrifices either). if sokka was in laios's shoes, he would be acting far more like toshiro, and we know this because "the boiling rock" exists. sokka is someone who is easily motivated by guilt, and feels guilty about basically everything. there's no way he would be enjoying his time in the dungeon if he felt that he had failed the one person he valued most in the world. he barely enjoys doing anything as it is.
that said, if he was simply in the dungeon for work and katara was there with him or safely on the surface or otherwise healthy and intact, yeah he'd probably like the hunting and puzzle solving and the learning about ecosystems. and since magic is something that can be taught, i'm sure he'd also be fascinated by the science behind it and learn as much magic as he can. aang would be fine food-wise because he'd simply pack enough food in advance, which is what most people do anyway. katara would love it because she loves going on any sort of quest-like adventure, and she loves getting to be the hero. she and aang are the resident healers, naturally. toph enjoys it because she likes hanging out with her friends and getting into weird little situations. suki is slashing up monsters with her katana but mainly she's just vibing. zuko is having a bad time unless he has a fixed goal, just like, in general, so he's only going in the dungeon (or anywhere) if he has a very specific reason. people see azula, mai, and ty lee in the dungeon and they're like "that party is way too small they won't last a day" and then they work as such a perfect and efficient team that everyone is just like "okay. i stand corrected." but anyway. if anyone is falin, it's yue.

It's the Tokka Tooth Fairy! 🧚🏻‍♀️ How do you think The Gaang reacts to finding out about Tokka getting together? How do you think they find out? 👀
Hi Tokka Tooth Fairy, thanks for stopping by! :D And good question, lemme think…
Aang seems like he would be a little oblivious to it all at first. Like, any time he does see Toph and Sokka and they do something that’s very couple-y, he just assumes they’re being weird/close like they normally are. Then maybe there’s this one day he leans over to Zuko and goes “Hey Zuko, do you find it odd that Toph and Sokka are so… close? Like, we’re friends, we don’t do that stuff.”//“Aang… they’re dating.”//“whAT???” LMAO idk if it would be that dramatic, but I think Aang’s view of intimacy and closeness with people is different, so he assumes that Toph and Sokka are just really close until he’s told otherwise haha!
Katara is much more observant, she knows her brother really well, and she knew that he was in love with Toph before Sokka even knew it. Still, with Toph and Sokka, their interactions before and after they started dating was kind of similar, so it was hard to tell, and she didn’t want to jump to conclusions (she did that once before they confessed their feelings for one another, and Katara never heard the end of that, even though she was right). So, one night when Sokka was staying over at her house, she just asked him, “You and Toph are dating now, right?” And he was just like, “…. Yep.” Did Katara gloat and say she knew it? Absolutely. Now, Toph and Sokka never heard the end of that.
Zuko likely learned about Toph and Sokka’s relationship from the others, or Toph let it slip one day. I like the idea that Toph and Zuko are super close and she doesn’t mind telling him about her relationships or things like that. Zuko was also one of the only people that knew Toph and Sokka were quietly pining for each other haha. So, sometimes she’d go to Zuko for advice (Toph went to Katara too, but for feelings talk, I think she sometimes prefers talking to Zuko). When Zuko finds out about Toph and Sokka, he seems like a guy that just nods and goes “Alright then. Now, anyone want some tea?” He doesn’t need much explanation about their relationship or how it came to be, lol.
Suki probably guessed they were together when she met up with the Gaang again, she was always really good at reading Sokka (I mean, the way he looks at her kind of gives it away). And I feel like because they’re adults and have this tendency to date within their friend group (lmao), Suki is really chill about them being together! In fact, I’d argue and say she thinks they’re cute together. There’s something special about best friends being in love with each other, and she knows that both Toph and Sokka will treat each other well.
Okay! Did I miss anyone? I don’t think so… LOL. Fun question! Thank you again for the ask, Tokka Tooth Fairy! Love me some good Tokka asks :) Hope you have a great day!
……
Send me asks about ATLA, or anything, really! :D

OK NEURODIVERGENT GAANG TIME BC I WANNA
these hcs are kinda halfway set in a modern au bc thats my context for this ! (gonna split it up so its not as long bc i drafted the original and it was LONG) water tribe siblings first !!!
Sokka
adhd/autism king 😌
Tumblr media
[ID: a screenshot of Sokka standing on a raised stone platform with a map of the Fire nation hanging behind him. He’s holding his arms stiffly by his side with a wide-eyed look on his face, brows raised as he has his mouth open, saying something. End ID.]
- schedules to survive, he likes to know what hes getting into and if you try to change plans on him without warning he’ll be very resistant
- smart kid who doesnt study, oh he tries, oh boy does he try, he ends up reading the same sentence over and over until he gets distracted by drawing something, working on the blueprint for his latest invention, or with researching something completely unrelated to what he’s mean to be studying. then he tosses and turns all night because he’s stressed by not having studied, but when he actually takes the test he makes a 105, despite there not even being a bonus question, he just answered the essay question so well the teacher gave him an extra 5 points
- special interests?? we got em!!! classic weaponry (think swords, boomerangs, but also, like canons and catapults and shit) engineering/physics, art/drawing, strategy games. he tends to hyperfocus within his special interests, so like for a week he was hellbent on building his own full sized trebuchet, much to the dismay of Gran Gran who just wanted to grow her tomatoes without them being crushed by said full size trebuchet
- (also he plays all types of games probably, but he def plays those ones where you take over the world, like the ones online and azula also plays them too and they end up being rivals, while not actually knowing who the other is outside of their usernames)
- he also talks a lot in his classes/is like the ‘class clown’ and ppl think this is him not focusing but engaging this way actually helps him focus way more than sitting silently, a lot of teachers dont understand it but the ones who do are actually paying attention and realize that he’s generally talking/joking about their current topic
- some observations (this shit is all canon babey!!!) - sokka is great at being a leader and communicating in groups he’s in but he really really struggles in front of crowds, one-on-one and sokka can talk well, joke and stuff but as soon as he’s separate from other people and everyone is just listening he clams up (solar eclipse pt 1). he also loves to joke and make people laugh, and a lot of the time he misinterprets stuff because he’s autistic but he also will realize this and do it anyway because he thinks it’s funny and he likes laughing with his friends (idk if this happens in canon but i do this and sokka does too bc i said so :^). He also takes up the protector/comforting role but despite his best intentions he can sometimes say insensitive stuff and not even realize what he’s done to upset people (when he happily told aang ‘the whole world thinks your dead!’) works best when he feels needed, if he feels unnecessary or like something doesnt matter he struggles to complete it (i feel like the beginning of sokka’s master rlly demonstrates what i mean here), and this goes both ways, he will put too much value into certain things that he cares about and can get his priorities mixed if he’s focused too much on what he believes matters more than what might be most pressing (zuko destroyed his suki sculpture, oh right bc he was attacking aang)
Katara
she also has adhd/autism, (so do both Hakoda and Kya 💙)
Tumblr media
[ID: a screenshot of Katara, Hakoda, Sokka, and Bato. Hakoda has his hand on Katara’s shoulder as they both look at Bato who is saying something, she has curious look on her face with her brows raised, while Hakoda looks exasperated. Sokka beside him his also looking curiously up at Bato, with one brow raised and the other furrowed. Bato has a neutral expression on his face as he speaks. End ID.]
- palms sweaty thoughts spaghetti, she tries to be practical bc she thinks someone needs to be but really her brain is like a runaway train, she sees something that needs doing and is like, guess ill do that now! and drops whatever she was doing first. she can get very anxious because of this because all the thing that need doing start to pile up because theyre all in her brain at once. that and as much as she tries to be practical she’s very impulsive, getting help from other people really helps alleviate this stuff
- interacting w ppl, when she was only part of her own smaller community she had a lot less toll on her, bc she knew everyone and was used to them, as she meets more people she gets really frustrated with how many people seem to refuse to say what they really mean. Katara is very straightforward herself and she says what she means, so even tho she gets more and more perceptive when interacting with new people, she resents how much she has to work just to decipher what people really mean half the time.
- caring for ppl, with people she cares about communicating is much easier bc she knows them, so she’s very open about her feelings around these people, and she can be hyper empathetic at times, but then sometimes she will say SUPER insensitive stuff off the cuff because she’s just very impulsive and she might regret it after the fact but she really struggles with apologizing because being wrong makes her feel like ppl are going to reject her
- perceptions, she knows what’s expected of her by the world, but she really rejects the idea that she has to stay in her role. still, she has internalized a lot of these expectations and tries to perform them, even when she sometimes struggles. beyond herself, she’s very certain about what she knows is wrong and has a strong moral code, she sees something wrong and she wants to fix it.
- she’s awful in school, not because she’s not smart, but she’s smart in ways that society does not appreciate. she doesnt care at all about all the worksheets and math she’s never gonna use, and all the history that got distorted, she’s much better at learning stuff on her own and she will go on deep dives of subjects she cares about and is super knowledgeable abt them.

Hear me out: Zukka! Percy Jackson AU
My head is too messy already, but I was listening to The Lightning Thief Musical and couldn’t stop thinking about it, so I put it here. This got very long, so I put it under the cut.
Zuko is basically the equivalent of Percy, except he’s the son of Ozai (Zeus. This one is perfect- lightning... Ozai’s a jerk... Zeus’s a jerk...)
He’s been living with him mom, Ursa, all his life. He never knew his dad, but he must have inherited his bad luck because he’s had a rough go. He’s been kicked out of school after school, he’s got ADHD, dyslexia, and weird things always seem to happen to him. But he’s got his mom, so everything’s fine
On a trip to a museum, his math teacher, Zhao, turns into a weird flying monster thing, and his history teach Piandao throws him a pen that turns into a sword, which he uses to kill his Zhao. He gets expelled yet again for “separating from the group”, and when Zuko asks Piandao why he isn’t backing him up, the wheelchair bound man simply shrugs
When he tells his mom what happens, she decides that’s it, and knows it’s finally time to tell him the truth and take him to Camp Half Blood
He’s in shock, to say the least. He’s apparently the son of a God, though his mom won’t say his name, and apparently his best friend, Aang, is a child of the long lost God of the Wild, Gyatso. He also has furry legs????
They’re almost to camp when suddenly, there’s another monster. The fight passes by in a blur and Zuko gets knocked out. The last thing he sees is his mom, disappearing in a blinding golden light
When he wakes up, there’s a boy staring at him quizzically. “You drool when you sleep,” is the first thing he says. Then he introduces himself as Sokka, the only human at camp
Zukos confused, of course, but this boy is very beautiful, so he decides to roll with it. Only once Piandao walks in, the lower half of his body a horse instead of a wheelchair, does he realize somethings off. Then he remembers his mom
Also Jeong Jeong is here too. He’s Dionysus, and he and Piandao are husbands. Sorry, I don’t make the rules.
Sokka is tasked with explaining things to him- he and his sister Katara have been at Camp Half Blood since they were young, when their dad joined the military or something, not quite sure on that
They have the same dad, but Sokka is human while Katara is the child of Hakoda and Kya (who’s Poseidon’s equivalent because I say so). Piandao (Chiron) agreed to let Sokka stay with Katara at camp because they were so young. Sokka has become super adapted to life at camp, and helps out with planning, administration, and strategy stuff
Basically, he works with The Mechanist kids (more on that later) and the Wan Shi Tong kids (he’s the only one I could think of who would be equivalent to Athena... it’s funny cause he’s an owl... and Athena’s symbol is the owl... yeah)
Basically cue Zuko freaking out about being a demigod and wondering who his godly parent is. Meanwhile, everyone is staring at his scar, whispering about it. He doesn’t pay any attention to it- he’s used to it by now, several years after he slipped and crashed his face onto the burning stove
He gets introduced to the campers, and they are... a wild bunch of kids
There’s Jet, the son of someone who’s the equivalent of Hermes, idk who though. He’s Zuko’s counsellor in the beginning
He ends up being the equivalent of Luke- I’m sorry. I love Jet, but he fits Luke’s character the best)
Suki, the daughter of Kyoshi (Artemis), is a skilled warrior with a sharp tongue, though she readily welcomes Zuko to camp and helps train him
Toph, the daughter of Poppy (Demeter), is a spunky blind girl with incredible control of the earth and plants
Haru is also a son of Poppy
Ty Lee, the daughter of someone who’s essentially Aphrodite- she’s beautiful and fun and everyone loves her, but she’s as deadly with a weapon as Suki
Mai, the daughter of Ukano (Ares), is deadly with knives; she takes well to Zuko, but she has the energy of the God of War flowing through her, so it doesn’t come across very well. She does like him though, even if she doesn’t go easy on him just because he’s new
Teo, the son of The Mechanist (Hephaestus), is a brilliant inventor who created his own wheelchair that still allows him to fight and participate in all the demigod activities
He and Sokka are genius inventing buddies. We were robbed of that in the show
Basically, on the day they play capture the flag, Zuko summons lightning that causes the field to burst into flames and the symbol of Ozai appears over his head
Everyone is shocked, and Piandao tells him it’s because there are rarely children of the big three: Ozai, the king of the Gods and god of the skies. Kya, the goddess of the ocean. Iroh, the god of the underworld and Ozai’s brother.
Basically he gets the prophecy, which is why everyone was staring at him when he arrived- it spoke of a demigod with a scar on his face, then Zuko, Sokka, Katara, and Aang go off to save Zuko’s mom and get back Ozai’s lightning bolt that they think Iroh stole
On their quest, amidst all the fighting monsters and crossing country, Sokka and Zuko discover they have crushes on each other, but they just kind of dance around their feelings since they’re busy trying not to die
Eventually they save the day, and discover Jet was the bad guy, but he gets away
Zuko gets injured by Jet and wakes up in the infirmary to Sokka sitting next to him, worried out of his mind. He’s so relieved to see Zuko awake that he kisses him. They don’t start dating because Zuko’s going back to school in the fall and Sokka’s staying at camp, but they both admit their feelings
After that, basically everything continues along with the rest of the series, including Azula coming back to life after the tree gets cured by the Golden Fleece
Eventually Zuko and Sokka start dating and the Gaang saves the day and everything’s great
