Honestly, every time I rewatched with ATLA or LOK, this fic idea would brew in my head, but I never actually took the time to write it.
Over the years, I’ve added to the idea and outlined it little by little. With my most recent rewatch, though, I fully outlined the fic and became OBSESSED with writing it!

ART PROCESS!
I’ll be sharing my art process below!
WARNING: This is gonna be a roller coaster ride! The process is not linear AT ALL and the end result will be different from the initial sketch because I’m just an amateur fool who tries to do art and I think it’s funny. Posting it here as a reminder for me us, artists, writers, to keep pushing through until we're satisfied :D. Now, on to the process:
The idea was pretty simple: Piggy-back Tokka. This piece was quite a challenge for me because: Side profile is my weakness, also, I've never drawn piggyback rides before but I was pretty satisfied with how the sketch turned out.
2. Then I had this idea where I wanted Sokka to look back because "intimacy", so I changed it up.
3. And then I colored it..... and then...
4. Changed my mind about the "intimacy" part and went with Sokka looking straight ahead.
5. And THEN I noticed that the anatomy was fundamentally wrong and that Toph was practically sliding off Sokka's back so I was like FUCK THIS SHIT back to the drawing board it is :)
6. Started by tracing Sokka again. And then tried to imagine the correct position for Toph. DO YOU SEE IT NOW?? HJASHASHKASKASJSAK
7. .............aaand it went pretty smooth from this point on (kinda). Changed up Toph's position. Changed up Sokka's face for the millionth time. And I was finally done! Why couldn't I have figured this out from the start I'll never know :)

I just wanted to let u known how much I’m loving your toph and sokka series. You do such a wonderful job writing a mature toph (in other fics they make her seem so heartless and overshadow her relationship with her daughter) I hope u consider writing more for them. Can’t wait for the next update ♥️
Eeeeeeeee thank you so much!!! Toph and Sokka are my favorite characters, and I think a lot of vulnerable Toph moments in the show are kinda forgotten in favor of the ‘Melon Lord’ and “My name’s Toph. Cuz it sounds like Tough. And that’s just what I am” vibe. I’m so glad you like how I’ve written her!!
I’ve actually never read any other Tokka or ATLA fanfiction, but I feel like I’ve had this fic bubbling in my brain for about 15 years or so haha.
Now that Toph and Sokka are in my fanfic wheelhouse, I do think I’ll write more stories about them once I’m done with this one. (I also have a Beast Boy/Raven fic i haven’t updated in a while that I need to get back to once I’m done with this one).
In conclusion, thank you so much for being so kind and reading my little tokka fanfic. I’m sending you every blessing💙

Summary: Toph and Sokka become unexpected partners for a top-secret undercover mission. Their cover is that of a newlywed couple -- but as the mission drags on, the line between fact and fantasy start to blur for these longtime friends...
A/N: The premise just tickled me, so I wrote a small scene from the larger story I imagine. Could I write the full thing out? Yes, probably. Will I actually, given how busy I am recently? Not sure.

They've been at this shitty little hole-in-the-wall bar for what feels like hours, now, hashing out all the details they need for their joint cover story: where this couple met, how they got together. Their dreams, their ambitions, and their plans: past, present, and future.
They keep the details similar enough to their own to remember, but with just enough changed that they won’t reveal their true identities on accident.
And it's just as they're close to winding up that Sokka finally works up the nerve to spring it on her.
“We should kiss,” he says, trying for casual and unaffected, like it's the most obvious thing in the world.
Toph smiles and finishes off the last of her drink, like he's just told her a joke.
“Heh. Good one, Sokka.”
“No, I'm being serious,” he insists, and although he knows she can't see him, he fixes her with a serious stare, anyways, as if he can somehow convey the gravity of the matter to her that way.
She must sense the genuine shift in his tone, because she looks flustered, then. Well, as flustered as he’s ever seen her, and she’s hard to rattle to begin with.
“Why ?” she says, voice pitched low.
“Well,” he explains, “I don't want to look surprised the first time it happens in public.”
“Who’s to say it ever will?” she counters, and there’s an unusual hardness in her voice, one he’s never heard from her before.
“Really, Toph?” he says. “You know far better than I do how unpredictable these things get.”
She sits back in her seat from across him, slumping ever-so-slightly as she mulls it over. In the low, warm light, which glints against her metal armor, he’s struck by how authoritative she looks, despite it.
“Fine,” she says at last. “But it should be you kissing me, not the other way around.”
Now it’s his turn to be confused.
“Why ?”
“Because,” she says tightly, “my assumed cover is a blind woman who doesn’t have seismic sense. If I initiate a kiss, it could tip someone off. I don’t have the benefit of a low profile, these days.”
“Besides,” she finishes, “I don’t want to have to pretend to feel for your face before I kiss you. That would look objectively ridiculous.”
Sokka finds he can’t argue with that. Though he’d kind of been hoping she’d be the one to take the lead, here.
But it’s fine. It’s not weird. It won’t be weird.
“Go ahead,” Toph says, and despite the brusque tone, he knows this is the best he could expect.
So he goes for it. Sokka stands up and leans over the table. Lets one feather-light hand push the dark hair out of her face before he puts his hand on her cheek and guides her mouth to his.
It’s somehow both unnatural and yet also the most natural thing in the world, to kiss his best friend of over a decade.
She doesn’t kiss him back, per se, but that’s not really a surprise. He pushes past that and kisses her the way her ‘husband’ would: gently but firmly, a hint of familiarity beneath it all. Takes note of the little things, in the moment: the way her lips are slightly chapped against his, the fact that she tastes faintly of the lychee beer she’d just finished off.
He pulls away a beat later.
The moment is over just as it started -- abruptly. He sits back down in his chair.
She nods once, leans back again. He notices, absently, that her arms are still crossed on the table.
“Okay, got it,” is all she says. He’s passed this little test of hers.
Sokka exhales, then. Takes a swig of his own bottle, briefly abandoned on the table’s far corner.
“Next time,” he murmurs, “do you think you can pretend to like that?”
Her tongue darts out, tracing out her lower lip briefly, and if he watches her a beat too long, well, she’s none the wiser.
“Yeah,” she says simply. “I think I can.”

I’ll share my absolute favorite Tokka hc: Toph taught Sokka the basics of seismic sense.
I imagine Sokka, being the curious guy he is, is pretty fascinated by how the ‘seeing with her feet’ thing works for Toph. So, she explains it to him, then shows him the basics.
They can communicate silently via seismic sense, too, because they make patterns of foot taps that they know mean certain things. It’s very convenient when they’re in big groups.
However, Toph regrets it when Sokka starts using it to tell when she’s lying 😆

Hello, Anon! Thanks for the ask! 🤗
About Toph
The simple answer would be: because she's such a badass! I was around 13 when I watched the series and good ol' insecure me saw her and decided this girl right here! I want to be like her! Like her, I had somewhat overbearing parents growing up. Therefore, I have always liked characters who lead double lives lol. And so Toph, she's perfect! The traits that drew me to her was: she's self-assured, confident, independent and true to herself.
Why Tokka?
I can't help it!! Sokka and Toph are my absolute favorite characters!! I'm just drawn to their overall dynamic! The bond that they share is soo precious. The show is always hella alot more enjoyable every time they are on-screen together. Also, I have a thing for best friends to lovers trope, especially when it starts out one-sided and grows overtime.
Picture this :
Two people, who later become best friends. They GET each other, they fought alongside each other, they are unapologetically themselves with the other, they always have more fun whenever the other is around, they miss each other when they're not together, they can be stupid and silly with each other, they can be vulnerable with each other and trust each other with their innermost secrets. How rare is that kind of bond?
And all the while, one person harbors a secret crush on the other without expecting any reciprocity, which makes their dynamic even more enjoyable to watch (well played, Bryke).
AND... AND!! Imagine: Finally getting together with said best friend after YEARS of solid friendship? Isn't that the most beautiful kind of relationship there is? S.O.U.L.M.A.T.E.S !!
