i actually remember thinking when i was watching as a kid that the pupil jeong jeong was talking about was zuko, only to be Very Surprised when it was actually zhao but it actually makes so much sense that i'm not totally convinced it wasn't intentional on the writers' part. it's a microcosm of zuko trying to be the main antagonist of this book, only for zhao to show him up in that regard, but there's also very much a thematic idea that zhao is who zuko could become if he gives into his father's worldview fully and lets his rage and hate completely overtake him and uses his firebending only for destruction. in a way, zhao is who iroh is trying to prevent zuko from becoming. and the thing is, though zuko obviously still has a loooong way to go, by zhao being the main antagonist of this episode and zuko, in fact, not showing up at all, the episode sends the subtle message that zuko isn't there yet, that there is still hope for him to break away.

it's too bad that jeong jeong hates teenage boys on principle bc the entire episode sokka's like "hey how about we DON'T pursue this firebending thing, it seems dangerous" and that's literally exactly what jeong jeong's been saying. sokka's like "hey maybe we SHOULDN'T go find a crazy firebender in the woods" and jeong jeong's like "please do not come and find me"

i know this makes no sense cus iroh had only just met zhao in 1x03 i believe but i saw this in a fic a long time ago (or i hallucinated it idk) where jeong jeong also trained lu ten and i Just. lalalalalalaaaaa

Piandao/Jeong Jeong?

oh yes, the classic chad/incel ship. never really saw the incentive here beyond them both being fire nation guys in the white lotus who kind of give off a gay vibe, but I guess now that I say it, yeah, that’s enough. I know jj has fans and I do get why, but there’s something about his hair that I simply cannot get past it’s like a mental barrier that prevents me from considering him at all. I also feel like piandao, being a 12/10, wouldn’t really fuck w a guy who lives in a shed. like piandao has a giant fuck you mansion, they don’t really seem compatible to me. their lifestyles are extremely different in every possible way. as foils that does make them interesting, especially taking into account how they interact with being fire nation and the implicit violence of that role: piandao seems to just not really care that he is implicitly profiting off of colonial exploitation? whereas it consumes jj’s whole life obviously. so I guess it would be cool to see them interact. but jj would definitely consider homosexuality part of his “burning curse” and I don’t think piandao could actually be bothered to deal with all that. also, if piandao ever found out that jj called sokka an oaf for the crime of literally just sitting there, he would slice jj into one million tiny pieces with his least favorite sword. the verdict: undeniably compelling, yet fundamentally incompatible.

the firebending masters is a good episode but as a jeong jeong fan i resent it a little bc if anyone talks about jeong jeong at all it's usually to say that he was wrong and needs to see the dragons and like, i don't think it would hurt but imo jeong jeong's problem is less what he believes about firebending and more how he feels about firebending. he's taken his feelings of guilt over what he and others have done with firebending and decided that's the truth. he feels cursed, ergo he is cursed. just straight-up refuting his beliefs, letting him know that firebending in its original form was not meant to be destructive, certainly wouldn't be a bad thing, but it wouldn't get at the underlying issue and i don't like the way it's presented as a he's wrong they're right instant fix

I have a lot of thoughts but for now, yall are getting this awkward interaction.

Its always interesting what you discover when rewatching atla, here we have Azula and Jeong Jeong doing the same Fire Bending move in Book 1 and Book 2.
