what are kannas judgmental opinions on the gaang (+mai and ty lee?)
okay i’ve written before on how kanna feels about the gaang, but you specifically said judgmental which is a whole other question. bc I do think that kanna can be a massive cunt when she wants (or needs) to be :)
katara: she is gonna get their whole village killed, not because she inherently has a target on back, but because she insists on making one anyway. literally one day of quiet and she’d never ask for anything ever again. literally just one day where she sits inside and doesn’t yell and doesn’t run off somewhere and give kanna a heart attack. she’s too fucking old for this….. please katara. just go inside and do your chores, quietly. you are killing your grandmother. is that what you want, katara, huh??? to kill your grandmother? katara catches a cold one day and stays curled up in bed and doesn’t speak because she has a sore throat, and kanna just spends the whole day bringing her soup and katara is so cute and cuddly the whole time it’s literally the best day of her life.
sokka: exact opposite problem, which is that he’s too obedient and it kinda scares her. please fight back just a little. just take one day off. breaks are important! she was a rebellious child, so as much as katara exhausts her, she also understands her very well. she does not understand sokka at all. he literally does everything she would ever ask from him before she even has to ask (to the point that katara thinks he does nothing, because kanna never forces sokka into doing anything). she has no idea who raised him to be this obedient, because it certainly wasn’t her. he used to be funny and curious and full of life as a child, but now his miserable depressed aura saps the vibes out of every room. at least when she’s doing chores with katara they chit chat and make jokes, but with sokka, she doesn’t even want that boy in her house. absolute vibe killer.
aang: he’s a bad influence on katara. or maybe katara is a bad influence on him? either way they should know better than to go into a fire nation ship. say what you will about sokka’s wet miserable aura, but he simply would not do that. but he’s also really cute, so. it’s ok :)
toph: this girl clearly thinks that she is too good to visit the south pole and she has no idea why sokka speaks so highly of that rich snob. and the first time she meets her, toph isn’t even all that polite to her?? this kid is yet another delinquent bad influence on her grandkids. (she grows on her.)
suki: she has absolutely nothing bad to say about suki. next!
zuko: invaded her village + attacked sokka + grabbed her and shoved her rudely + kidnapped aang + stupid hair + pure evil. (once they are introduced properly after the war, though, zuko apologizes and he’s really sweet about it so she forgives him and basically just likes him from that point forward.)
mai: katara hates her but sokka loves her so she doesn’t know what to think. on one hand, katara is her favorite, but on the other hand, sokka exercises better judgment. she barely talks in her presence, so she genuinely has no clue. she kind of gives off scary vibes though. who can say.
ty lee: the most charming girl in the world, second only to suki. kanna has nothing bad to say about ty lee. in fact she once suggests to katara that she could stand to be more like ty lee, and katara throws a hissy fit. which is exactly the kind of behavior kanna was referring to. oh well.
appa: perfect creature. no notes.
momo: his green eyes are staring directly into her soul. for the love of god please get him some brown contacts.

Zutara Week 2022 Day 1: Tradition
Zuko takes SWT tradition too seriously...
...until someone had been pranking him. Telling him that "people from the other nation who wishes to court a water tribe girl must kiss a fish before offering it to a penguin seal, to symbolize his/her love".

Number one beauty for my artist's ask (31. Beautiful women) - Kya (the First) of the Southern Water Tribe
Sokka takes after her a lot, so I headcanon her as very beautiful and very emotional. I wish we could see more of her in the show.
Also nose piercing was common among women in some circumpolar cultures, so it's another headcanon of mine.
If you feel like it you can support me on Ko-fi. And your feedback will make the artist really happy!

For all the potential spin off shows we could have for AtLA, one thought I actually kinda want to see is about Kanna.
Tumblr media
She left the North to go live in the South, during a war.
And I have so many questions as she had to travel across the world. During a war.
Did she travel alone? Or was it that the North and South were making trade at the time and she hopped on? Even if she joined warriors or merchants, there is a war going on. There'd be Fire Nation ships and pirates and what adventure did she go on? Is she a badass non bender that Hakoda and Sokka inherited? Or was she surviving by the skin of her teeth and had to rely on her wit?
Did she have to travel through the Earth Kingdom?
If "all old people know each other", who did she meet? Did she ever join the White Lotus too?
I just really wonder what was her adventure traveling from the Northern Water Tribe to the Southern Water Tribe. Cause it couldn't have been all smooth sailing the whole way.
Also possibly getting to see Hakoda's father. Like, presumably she got with a man from the Southern Water Tribe, but there's so little mentioned of him, which is kinda odd as SWT is typically more close knit community. Was he just not in his family's life that much? Was Hakoda's father someone from the Earth Kingdom, who wanted to fight in the war and that's why he didn't go with her? Or did Kanna have some spicy romance with a pirate who ultimately didn't want to settle in the SWT or had to keep moving as the FN and EK were after him?
She's a very minor character in the grand scheme of it all, but she has such an interesting background set up, I want to know what did she come across as she traveled across the world to be with the SWT. If AtLA got spin off shows covering iconic characters, she is one I want to see what her adventure was like.

i know that a lot of people take issue with the fact that pakku only agrees to teach katara because he realizes that she’s the granddaughter of the woman he tried to get with a bajillion years ago, but i actually see that moment of him realizing that kanna left to escape their marriage as a moment of self-reflection from him. like, imagine having to contend with the fact that your rancid vibes drove the love of your life away after having just publicly humiliated her fourteen year old granddaughter who was begat on the literal other side of the earth because how that’s far she went to escape him. sokka gets the moment of realizing “oh, men and woman are ontologically equal in their capacities, and divisions between genders are socially assigned and arbitrary,” but that isn’t really pakku’s deal at all. pakku’s deal is more like, “oh, my unyielding insistence on adhering to and imposing unjust patriarchal traditions actually makes me deeply unpleasant to be around and drives my loved ones away. maybe I should take a fucking chill pill perhaps.”
like, the fact that katara ultimately loses the fight and nothing she actually says or does persuades him is interesting, because it means that his reflection is internal, his moment of revelation not brought about by didactic moralizing, but through taking a long, hard look in the mirror, and realizing that being kind is more important than being right. and that’s why he seems to make an effort to be friendlier and more helpful, more so than making any effort to become a male feminist and fight for women’s rights. sokka, for example, initially has a narrow view of gender because his worldview is limited and then it expands, but pakku, by contrast, is literally a member of the white lotus; he is old and worldly, so he clearly already understands that their tribe’s traditions are not ontologically necessitated, but he nonetheless supports them because they benefit him. it is only when he learns that the love of his love literally escaped their tribe and left behind everything she ever knew just to avoid him that he decides to reevaluate his staunch insistence on clinging to his patriarchal values. and who wouldn’t. i mean, that’s gotta fucking hurt!
i know that katara’s fight against him does feel like a grand feminist moment as she fights for her ideals and her rights as a girl, and to her (and to us as the audience) it certainly does feel that way, but to pakku, his change of heart is one of realizing that he should probably stop being an asshole to every woman he’s ever met while he still has a few good years left. a core motif of katara’s arc is that she cannot actually preach her ideals and simply enlighten every asshole she meets, as much as she’d certainly like to; enlightenment comes from within. and so it is pakku’s regrets that motivate him to be kinder, because it’s never too late to change for the better. and that’s kind of beautiful actually.

zuko immediately sweating around kanna and hakoda whenever he's in the swt is so funny and my fav hc ever. it's even worse for him bc his bf will NOT help him whatsoever bc he thinks it's the most amusing thing ever. zuko will look over at sokka with the most pleading eyes whenever hakoda is like "come fishing with me, son" or kanna is like "have you not been eating!?" and sokka is just like "figure it out jerkbender"
