Id like to say that my life is good, that I’m happy where I am but I’m not. I’m upset and frustrated; but most of all I’m living on the street, preforming stupid acrobatic tricks just to feed myself. I’ve left everything behind. My family and wealth but most importantly someone I never wanted to live without.

I’m upside down when I see them; soft flames coming from the soles of my bare feet. Resting on my forearms and twisting and contorting my body.

“You.” A teenaged girl approaches me and I turn right side up, “you’re a fire bender aren’t you!” She says, “what’s your name?”

“Uh” I stare at her and smile nervously, “y/n Huǒ” I repeat slowly, and quietly. People of the fire nation know the traitor I’ve become outside the walls of the fire nation. Meeting the avatar, going against my friends for his life. All because I believed in something greater than all of this.

“I know you” a boy says, bandana around his forehead, “your grandpa, Yújìn. I know- or knew him” He says

“Oh.” Realization hits my face, “you’re the avatar!” A short girl slaps me.

“Wow way to tell everyone!” She retorts, god are little kids sassy.

“You could teach Aang firebending” Katara says, it’s hard not to know someone’s name when there’s wanted posters all over town.

“I’m good at fire bending but I’m no master” I say, “I thought Prince Zuko abandoned the throne to teach you” I ask

“Well he’s uh.. learning a new way to firebend” Toph laughs a little and I smile awkwardly.

“I don’t bend very traditionally” I reply, “but if it will get me off the streets I guess why not” I stand up straighter and brush my hair out of my face.

“You brought that back?!” Zuko shouts, we’ve had a long history. One that includes a betrothal, and a knife to the gut. He looks at me with disgust which I’m not surprised at.

“I’m a girl. Not a thing!” I cry out, “the only reason I’m here is because Aang needs a firebending teacher because you suck!” I scoff out at him, there’s fire burning in his hands but I never raise mine.

He groans at me, “you’ve always been like this! Even when”

“Zuko I don’t want to talk about that” I warn, there’s a plea in my voice but he accepts that, “it was a long time ago”

“Yeah like it was that long ago” he sasses and I roll my eyes.

“Zuko!”

It doesn’t take long for things to settle down; I’m essentially useless now that Zuko has gotten his bending back. Even if he did it how I told him to do it all along but whatever.

The bickering still happens, and I want to throw a knife at him but part of me still loves him. I didn’t hate being betrothed to him as much as I thought I did.

“Did you ever miss us?” I ask him, “after you were banished. I refused to Azula to give away your location and then the Avatars when you wrote me” I confess, “so I left”

“I think. At first I did, but I don’t— I don’t think we would’ve worked together. We fight all the time. I hated you at first. And you hated me” He admits, looking down slightly. He sighs heavily

“Yeah. I guess. But I didn’t really hate- hate you” I admit, “I missed you. I liked knowing you”

He nods, “I did like knowing you too, you’ve changed so much. I mean your fire it’s pink” he laughs

“Maybe it’s from my bubbly personality” I tease, he laughs

“You. Have a bubbly personality!” He laughs and it’s so good to hear, “you were so shy, like if I sneezed too hard I would scare you”

I smile softly, “I’ve changed so much sense I was twelve” my hair falls around my face and he tucks the loose strand around my ear

“What now that you’re fourteen?” He teases softly, his hand lingers behind my ear. But he removes himself quickly.

“Zuko. Im fifteen” I remind him, it’s embarrassing when he says he knows how my heart flutters and I feel weak in the knees.

“I remember, once you turned eighteen we would’ve” he looks away with a blush on his cheeks

“Yeah. Gotten married” I laugh, and I keep laughing because the thought of getting married feels so small and childish to the war we’re supposed to be preparing for.

He laughs; rolling laughs that make me keep laughing. My laughs turn short and wheezy before his face straightens, “are you ok? Can you breathe?” His face turns to me and he smiles seeing my smile. It’s a smile that makes my cheeks hurt and heart race.

“As the Prince of the fire nation. I’m supposed to hate you. Because you’ve betrayed our nation. But as Zuko. As your Zuko. In this moment I don’t feel anything but hate. I feel love for you. A fire that I never want to put out” he tells me, scooting closer to me. I let him cradle my face, “I never hated you”

“I never hated you either” a weak laugh escapes me but he kisses me before it truly develops. It’s a kiss that devours me whole, wrapping itself into my heart and soul.

“If we make it through this. Let’s make good on that betrothal”

Another old show rewatch rant. This is more generalized but we as older watchers need to be mindful of the fact that these are KIDS shows.

Like I’m not saying a kids show can’t have substance but some of yall be taking scenes that are literally made for rule of funny or rule of cringe way too seriously.

Like omg yes Danny’s parents are hilariously incompetent and lowkey neglectful but to apply real life abuse to a cartoon about halfghost please be for real. If they were attentive parents you wouldn’t have a show, like the only reason Danny is able to get away with idk being a ghost superhero is cause his parents are oblivious it’s made for plot.

Aang kissing Katara without consent isn’t some makings of a future pedophile. My dude is 12 and about to possibly die tomorrow like- and it’s not like a stranger, they’ve kissed before in the cave of two lovers, had multiple moments of flirting and what not. Was it dumb yeah the whole point is to show how jealous and stupid Aang was being and people take it way more than it is.

So there you have it. I honestly enjoyed the frick outta this show. It’s very different, there are a lot of changes (some I don’t like but can live with and others that I love), and if you’re only gonna watch it to compare it to the original series and not as a completely different thing, then you’re probably gonna hate it. And that’s okay, just don’t hate on those of us who enjoyed it. Let us enjoy it!

The latest chapter is giving me hints about the Cave of Two Lovers episode. Here me out.

It’s the fact that Zuko and Aang were both in a snowy tundra of a cave and they only had a limited amount of fire left, similar to Aang and Katara in the original from that episode. Honestly, even though Aang and possibly Zuko haven’t reached that point of understanding where they are on their feelings for each other, I would totally understand at the spur of the moment, a few seconds before Katara and Sokka showed, Aang would have kissed him regardless. Considering all the pent up stress and emotions going on since Zuko went missing and the situation at hand. He wouldn’t even be thinking clearly, and honestly would make things more complicated in the near future. I mean, if Katara and Aang DID kiss in the cave, we didn’t really get an establishment afterwards, just a sense of affirmation.

If only Katara and Sokka had waited a few more seconds

I wasn't even actively thinking about the parallels to the Cave of Two Lovers when I wrote that scene, but maybe it was in my subconscious while I was working on it, because it makes a lot of sense now that you mention it lol.

I'm definitely going to touch on that moment a bit in the next chapter, or at at least Aang's thoughts on it since we didn't get to see his POV in that cave scene, so stay tuned :)

I thought I’d do a liveblog reaction to the ATLA live action so this is just a chaotic stream of my thoughts as I watch. Spoilers ahead (fyi I’m going to be tagging these as “atla stream of consciousness”)

Episode 1 (Part 1)

The fire nation theme already got me excited lol.

Earthbending CGI is slightly sketchy. You can tell firebending got the whole budget

Firelord Sozin doesn’t have enough gravitasse imo. Like the music is out evil-ing him.

I don’t recognize anyone bending in the intro but it looks cool (who’s narrating though?-they’re not doing a good job)

I know people have complained about him being able to fly but it doesn’t really bother me. New universe, some new rules can apply (within reason).

I can see the Tibetan influences more evidently in the Air Nomads that’s cool.

Edit: I’ve been told that he does find out but months before he runs away, and the thing that sets him off is being told to leave (thanks @ragnarssons !) For me it makes a little more sense the original way but I don’t deeply care.

Gordon’s delivery on “I never asked to be special” OKAY THIS KID CAN ACT.

This Aang and Gyatso scene has me emotional wow. Do more of this and less burning people.

I already knew that Aang didn’t run away and I get streamlining some stuff but I do think it was a pretty core trait to change and having him be slightly more morally grey would have been more interesting, especially because his monologue was already leading there.

The Fire Nation people do not need to say “we’re gonna kill everyone” so many times. Do they think we don’t understand?

Airbending CGI looks pretty good too.

I get why they’re showing people burning and it makes sense I just really have trouble watching it.

In terms of showing the Air Nomad genocide, I can understand why they did it. When you’re doing a reimagining, especially with the tonal shift, it’s good to have a new beginning or a new something to set yourself apart from the original. It’s a different story and that’s okay. That being said, I don’t like how gruesome everything is. I feel like a lot of the same fear factors could be achieved without showing everyone (especially Gyatso) burning, and it feels like it’s violence for the sake of shock value trying to be edgier or something (I also don’t like gruesome stuff generally so that may be me).

Sure! For context this was supposed to kind of tie together this post about Sokka and disability and these posts (and a ton more like it) about the issues and trauma he's always dealt with and how he would be after the war. We see a lot (including from me) about Sokka helping Zuko through some stuff after the war, but it's time to flip the tables

So this was meant to be Sokka learning how to be vulnerable and accept help from others and we would have seen some cute scenes of Zuko taking care of him on his bad days, like using his firebending to heat Sokka's leg, omg

anyway im rambling again. i didnt get to a LOT of the cute stuff before this got too long and out of hand and begged to be abandoned but here are three of my favorite dialogue scenes I'd written

between sokka and katara:

You can ask for help. Zuko was right there for you this whole time and–” “Old habits die hard, I guess…” “Sokka–” “How are the kids?” “...They’re fine... Kya’s coming along really well with her bending. Episode 3 thoughts: 

Having Jet and the mechanist in one episode was a risk that didn’t entirely work, but is something I am impressed with. I would NOT have written these episodes together, but I think it's a pretty interesting take. It really pits Katara and Sokka against each other in a very interesting way, whilst placing Aang in a middle ground. 

I mean I HATE that they go “omg…you are the bad guy” like NO REALLY. But also like…assigning BAD and GOOD to people through just SAYING they are is soooo odd. Like no thanks. Let US work that out, have Katara be betrayed and hurt, not her just casually calling him a bad dude. 

Oh also the no bending zuko vs aang fight? Pretty interesting it showed Dallas’s tallents with martial arts in a really fun way because I could actually see it beyond the fire bending! PLUS the use of props in the fighting was fun! Zuko breaking that stick off and using it, Aang defending with the plates and baskets, it was all really dynamic! Oh plus zuko being hit by a broom. Oh and then the fights in the carpet drapes!?that was filmed interestingly (though the music was…a choice). 

Katara and Sokka riding the postal delivery carts up to the castle was a cute throw back to the original show, and also interestingly explored omashus own culture and how it can be used in ‘fights’. It was a neat addition rather than just walking there. 

 “You have my notebook” is such an odd line. I wish they went into more detail as to WHY this notebook is so important in the first few episodes because currently it means literally nothing. Like it seems to hold a log of his journey? Or his knowledge of the avatars? But like…a little more depth please! Cuss it IS interesting to know that Zuko put EFFORT into his research and it’s almost funny that he’s the one that teaches aang parts of what past avatars have done. Like its very comical! And Zuko losing it over it being missing is even more funny. 

Iroh unironically going “for the fire nation” was….a choice. And not a good one in my opinion. Especially since it FEELS like they are planning on keeping the white lotus plot line (they did show Iroh buying a lotus tile) so for him to so casually do that it just feels odd. Like him protecting zuko? Normal. Him doing that??? eeehhhhhhh.

Okay so I have watched like, three Avatar live action episodes so far and here are some quick thoughts on it. (Spoiler alert this is a positive post, negativity DNA unless you want to make me sad)

- Right off the bat it should be noted that my standards for good tv / movies are pretty low these days. Due to the general state of tv / movies, I have been forced to place the bar of acceptability at « I can see what is happening on the screen and the character’s costumes have colours ». NATLA passes both criterias with flying — well, colours.

- Secondly I actually like the way the show handles the character arcs. I feel like people who are complaining just noticed that they changed or toned down some aspects of the character arcs, and were so angry that they straight up stopped paying attention instead of noticing all the new and nuanced things that were added in. Every character is getting an interesting and intriguing storyline, they just don’t look exactly the same as in the original. If that makes you froth at the mouth, may I suggest not watching any adaptation ever maybe? Because huh that’s kind of what adaptations do.

- Unfortunately the pacing is kinda clunky and some of the dialogue is irritating, especially the recurrent thing where a character who would usually prefer to die before speaking about their feelings — or wouldn’t have the emotional maturity to even realize what they are feeling — just turn to the camera and loudly announce « I am feeling this thing! ». However, those two issues are obviously a result of not enough episodes. They had to cram A LOT in eight episodes and that is Netflix’s fault, not the showrunner’s. With eight episodes they basically had the choice between not having the time to properly « show not tell » and therefore having to cut out the character’s more subtle emotional states entirely, or try to work in conversations and monologues in which the characters just straight up say things to each other. So you get Aang telling Appa he’s scared of being the avatar and Zuko actually admitting out loud that he has hope that he might get to go home. It is what it is.

- They clearly ran out of money for wigs tho. Gran-gran’s wig is horrendous and the only thing I cannot forgive.

- Aside from some clunky pacing and gran-gran’s wig tho, everything else has slapped so far. Sokka is PERFECT. Suki was great too. Sad that they didn’t put Sokka in the full Kyoshi warrior getup but it does create an unintentionally hilarious moment where the kyoshi people are all like « um no we don’t have any outsiders in our village, no sir mister fire soldier » and meanwhile this idiot is just standing there all dressed in BLUE

- Aang is also perfect. Zuko is perfect. Katara is doing that thing where you bottle up all your anger inside and never make it anyone else’s problem and just keep smiling and being nice and polite and then you die, which unfortunately seems to make people think she just has no anger? Lmao okay.

- the cgi was hit and miss in the first episode but then got a lot better

- the fight choreographies are ON POINT OMG

- I didn’t remember why I didn’t like Jet (forgor most of his arc in the show) but just remembered I didn’t like him, which made for an interesting ep 3 viewing experience lol

- also Kevin from supernatural?????

- would prefer it if my husband stopped saying « okay Anakin! 🙄 » every time someone gets set on fire but I think that might just be an issue in my household

thoughts on atla live action. spoilers below. anyway it’s a 7/10 for me. good but… could have been better.

But watching it again recently idk I found this new appreciation for kataang, and aang especially! I just think aangs so charming and cute? 🥴

Yay love seeing people relate to the post I posted about becoming a Kataang shipper during my re-watch of ATLA 😘 (you can read it here if you haven’t already).

Firstly, yesss, watching ATLA is still fun after years. Ngl I think when I was younger (mostly because Netflix wasn’t really big), I watched Avatar but not thoroughly. It was more like, if the episode is on the TV, I’m going to watch it. I might have missed an episode or I’d have to wait till next week to see the next episode. This is compared to when I got older and I could do a full binge watch of the whole thing on Netflix (which I recommend 😉).

Secondly, haha I soooo relate to crushing on Zuko. Honestly, still do lol (literally have you seen what he looks like in the comics!?! I didn’t know his hair could get better than season 3 but 😍). And yeah, definitely understand using Katara as a self-insert for the Zuko love 😂. Love an enemies to lovers!!!

Aww yes, I don’t think I paid much attention to Aang when I was younger (other than him being the main character lol) because of how much I loved Zuko. But truly, every single character is so amazing that they all deserve the same amount of love and attention 🥹.

THAT DANCE!! I don’t know what’s in the air at the Fire Nation but Aang was too smooth. After watching that episode, my standards went up by 5000%. I feel like that might have been the episode on my rewatch that made me think a bit differently about Kataang. I think prior to that I was still fully on the Zxtara (going to x the ship name out again in case shippers don’t want to see this xx) train but then that episode happened and I thought this is fricking cuteeee (then of course proceeded to rewatch again).

I’m so happy they’re giving us more adult Gaang content!! So so excited for that movie 😍 and all the Kataang content to come.

Yeah, and on your final point, I do remember lots of Aang hate from some shippers (I do think there might still be some even now). Definitely not saying all Zxtara shippers hate Aang (and definitely don’t think that was what anon was implying)!!! I do think it was a small minority who were probably just trying to find an excuse to hate Aang but I have seen many Zxtara shippers who absolutely adore Aang which always makes me happy because he is a sweet sunshine who deserves all the love and appreciation ☺️.

1. aang

when he’s not in the avatar state, absolutely nobody. aang’s the type of person to trap spiders and set them free outside. cries when he steps on bugs. so on and so forth. but when he IS in the avatar state, he’s probably killed about 20 people in total. so much destruction occurred in the time before he learned to master the avatar state. he doesn’t know he’s unintentionally killed these people and hopefully he’ll never find out.

2. katara

nobody. she threatens LOTS of people and has committed numerous acts of violence but never actually killed anyone. she can’t do it and she doesn’t want to. good for her.

3. sokka

so many people dude omg. everyone on all of those airships in the finale? dead. combustion man? dead. i’m sure there were a few during the invasion too, and where are they now? dead. he doesn’t like thinking about it and ofc he doesn’t actively make an effort to kill people, it just so happens he’s done it more than twice.

4. toph

hmmm. i don’t think toph would have a high kill count, but definitely two or three. i mean she trapped xin fu and master yu in that box, and what’s the bet they died as a result, right? also just general destructive nature with earthbending probably resulted in some casualties. toph’s the type of person to voluntarily squish bugs. throw rocks at birds. that sorta thing, yk? but not flat-out murder.

5. zuko

lmao definitely a few. similar to toph, probably only two or three people directly. probably lots indirectly, though. especially during his banishment. he absolutely WANTS to kill people, probably threatens it every two hours, but like katara he can’t bring himself to actually do it most of the time. came very close to killing ozai during the invasion but didn’t go through with it.

6. suki

at least like 10-15 idk. she’s an elite warrior, she’s definitely gotten her sword bloody more than once. it haunts her in her sleep, though, and she hates resorting to it. (but if the situation is dire…) however she WILL NOT kill bugs and will make others do it for her.

oh man. lots. so many. TOO many. a lot indirectly while she was going a little mad and making crazy dangerous orders. over time the numbers die down as she heals and grows, but she definitely has a pretty high kill count.

8. mai

30+ probably more. throwing knives go swishh. also like mai gives assassin vibes she’s probably killed so many people man. like. a lot. zuko (sarcastically) goes, “ugh i’m gonna kill that advisor” and then mai disappears suspiciously and then the next day the advisor is found dead in his home and mai goes, “huh that’s crazy.”

9. ty lee

18,000 people. (this is a joke ok she’s probably only ever killed a fruit fly and then had an existential crisis over it.)

So…about that Captured AU? 👀

Nothing quite says 'spring/summer 2020' like an intense and sudden atla relapse amiright.

Anyway. The Captured AU.

Immediately after the failed invasion, Sokka ends up separated from the group and gets captured. Since he's been ID'd as the idea guy behind the invasion plan, he gets sent to Boiling Rock prison and has, as the poet's say, A Bad Time since Azula wants answers about where the Avatar is. Unknown to Sokka, Zuko's defected and comes across Aang, who has doubled-back to see if he can track down where Sokka ended up. Zuko and Aang end up staging the jail break to save Sokka as Zuko's initial 'joining the Gaang' adventure. Guest stars Suki and Hakoda are also along for the ride, along with soon-to-be-defectors Mai and Ty Lee, with angst for everyone all around.

In the snip below, Azula just got done with questioning Sokka, with Hakoda there to put pressure on both of them, and Sokka's given a fake location for Aang et al, and as a "reward" they're given a couple of minutes alone.

Under a cut because it's a lil long:

Hakoda’s launching himself forward before the door is fully closed, falling to his knees in front of Sokka and reaching out for him. Sokka can’t help it. The reaction is out of his control--the pulling back, the curl in on himself, the small and afraid whine that works out of his throat. But Hakoda’s hands cup Sokka’s face gently, thumbs moving over Sokka’s cheeks. That hurts more, somehow, than the pain his body had braced for by someone moving so closely so quickly. Hakoda says, “Sokka--”

“It’s okay,” Sokka whispers. His voice shakes. “It’s okay. I didn’t--Aang’s--”

Hakoda shushes him, another swipe of his thumbs. Sokka leans into the touch. “They’ll be listening,” Hakoda says, voice wavering as much as Sokka’s. “But that’s good. You did a good thing.”

Hakoda’s crying and not trying to hide it. Sokka can’t talk around the sudden lump in his throat. Hakoda lets go of Sokka’s face to put one hand on Sokka’s arm, the other to the back of Sokka’s neck, pulling him into a loose hug, careful not to jostle any hurting places. Sokka drops his head to his dad’s shoulder and tries to get his breathing in order. 

“You’re doing so well,” says Hakoda. 

Which is wrong. Sokka isn’t doing well at all. He’s been left behind and caputred and messed everything up, just like he messed up the invasion. Just like he messes up everything. They’re both going to die here because Sokka wasn’t smart enough, fast enough, good enough, and he can’t talk around that knot in his throat, not even to apologize for messing all of this up so badly, all because he thought he could handle this when he can’t.

“I’m so proud,” Hakoda says, and Sokka wants to ask why.

Thinking thoughts about potential atla fic(s) i wanna write (namely with my kataang fankids) 

here’s just some spitballing under the cut

a lot of this is just my stream of consciousness/opinions so take it with a grain of salt

So, given that this is purely an AU i can address certain elements I didn’t particularly find appealing that were introduced after the atla show and put my own spin on them

One element is... how Aang treats his kids. I’m definitely not one of those people thats like “omg Aang needs to be a perfect father they ruined him in TLOK by giving him flaws” but... some of his parenting choices are questionable at best. Like it feels like he focused on primarily and practically only educating Tenzin on Air Nomad culture?? Like bro... your other kids might not be airbenders but that’s still their culture. And also water tribe culture is their culture too. Idk it just feels like its very one or the other with this family (and honestly even with other characters of mixed heritage in TLOK) and that always squicked me out. Like... blended families with blended cultures exist - they shouldn’t be made to choose one or the other. They make a big point of this in the comics and even have a pretty good character representation of it with the character Kori but then in TLOK they just kinda ... don’t do that as much? The Kataang kids and Mako and Bolin feel like big offenders of this. That’s just my take anyway. TL;DR I want to make their family feel like a blended family and not one that has to choose sides. All Kataang kids would be able to immerse themselves in the cultures of their parents. I guess its less of an Aang parenting issue so much as it is a Bryke writing issue but either way... yeah

Another element is... the way the air nomad genocide is “fixed”. Idk as a Jewish person who has a lot of personal ties to genocide survivors the way it was handled in TLOK always squicked me out. just woop turned the magic lightswitch off and on again and bam more airbenders. it just felt deeply cheap to me and really inconsistent with the more reality-bound themes of ATLA. I would want to address this more realistically than that. One element I enjoy from the comics and TLOK is the introduction of the air acolytes as converts to the culture who, although they are not air nomads or descendants of them, still help preserve the culture and keep it alive by participating in it and educating others about it. I think it would also be interesting to explore possible descendants of air nomads who could maybe be given an opportunity to learn to reconnect with a culture that they never got to know about due to their grandparents/great-grandparents having to hide their culture for fear of being killed. I’d also be interested in exploring the possibility of maybe small pockets of airbenders living in hiding somewhere who have been existing in diaspora and how their culture may have adapted over the years as a result of that. If the Sun Warriors can hide on that tiny ass fire nation island then there’s definitely some descendants of air NOMADS hiding out somewhere sorry Bryke. they may be a sub-culture in similar style to the sun warriors/foggy swamp tribe/sandbenders. I may also bring in “The Guiding Wind” from Avatar Legends to some degree. I’m like 99% sure its implied Ty Lee is the descendant of a guiding wind member so that could be fun to explore. 

Another element is........ idk I just think Kataang would have more than 3 kids. This is totally a me thing but I definitely see the Kataang family being on the larger side. Lots of family, lots of siblings, lots of pressure from being the kids of the Avatar and how they all deal with that. I’d also make the kids... look more like both parents to a degree instead of Kya and Tenzin basically just being Katara and Aang the remix. Because I don’t want to retread TLOK canon in this AU all of these kids would be completely new but I would recycle some bits from Kya, Bumi, and Tenzin into these new kids. 

This isn’t a fix-it fic really so much as a “here’s what I personally would do” sort of fic. If I do actually pursue this I hope to do it justice and do it respectfully. I’ve been an ATLA fan for an eternity and wanted to contribute to the ever growing pile of ATLA aus and fan content. 

I probably have more thoughts rattling in my brain that aren’t quite rising to the surface at 12 am but yeah... these are my basic ideas
