my favourite manner of royal succession (aside from the obvious choice, abolition ofc – be it voluntary or guillotinous) is substitution-made-permanent
which we have one record of, from the 19th century BCE (about a century before the infamous Ea-naṣir and his subpar copper), when a king of the Isin dynasty that appears towards the end of the Sumerian King List, Erra-imittī, was succeeded by Enlil-bāni, a gardener that he crowned himself
this comes from my favourite ritual from the ancient world, the ritual of the substitute king. you see, when an omen predicted that the king was in danger, a servant would be chosen to take his place – the substitute would be given the crown, dressed in royal attire, live in the palace and be treated as king for the duration of the danger not only by the (other) servants/subjects, but hopefully (crucially!) also by the gods. after the danger passed, the real king returned and if the gods hadn't taken care of him already, the substitute was ritually slaughtered
Erra-imittī is notable because once he placed the crown on the substitute, Enlil-bāni, a gardener from the royal palace, he went on to choke on some hot porridge and dropped dead. clearly, the gods saw through Erra-imittī's ruse. by way of this "gastronomic mishap" Enlil-bāni simply did not return the crown and continued to rule for another 24 years
*because of some inconsistencies in the different versions of the SKL in this part, it is also possible that this is a secondary explanation for the break in dynastic succession, invented later to legitimize an usurper's taking of the throne. but even if this is the case, the fact remains that this was then apparently a conceivable, plausible scenario

"Good thing you have chemistry"
"Oh shut up, his girlfriend is right there" you rolled your eyes
"So what? She doesn't care. Didn't touch him once since we got here"
"Don't say that, maybe she doesn't like to show affection in public" you shrugged your shoulders looking at your friend.
"(y/n), she looks like she came alone." she laughed. "You don't isolate yourself in a wedding"
"Okay I get it, she's VIP and all that" She rolled her eyes ironically and you laughed at her expression.
"Oh look he's going to get her" your friend said maybe too much excited. It was like watching live TV.
You look in her direction to see him. You were lying if you said that wouldn’t be interested to see their interaction.
He look at her with a little smile and hugged her waist. His white shirt constrasted with her bany green dress and made the perfect color match. They look perfect for each other.
The interaction looked weird from that perspective. He tried to kiss her but she moved her head slightly, so he ended up kissing her cheek.
He frown and pouted, he was looking adorable with that puppy eyes looking at her in awe but somehow she rolled her eyes and looked away.
How could she didnt gave herself away at that look? You thought to yourself.
“What was that for?” You could read his lips.
“For nothing” she responded.
“What i have done now?” He asked close to her ear.
Another J balvin song started and he wanted to dance with her but she was ignoring him.
“Why do you bring me here? I wanted to go at the begining and you just ignored me and abandonated me“
“Im sorry but i have to talk with my friends!”
“Brad you’ve been drinking, you know i hate that!”
“Dance with me” he asked defeated and she looked at him with a dead glare.
She sat on her chair. he stood there in the same spot. His eyes took a glance around the room until found yours.

At this point you didn’t look away. You gave him a small smile, cheeks flushed as the room darkened and envolve around you.
His expression softened as his gaze grew. He coudn’t look away either.
He started by admiring how pretty you looked. The way your hair got perfectly spotted out of your face into that flower crown.
He moved to your dress and saw the softiest combination between champagne silk and your silver heels. The way you kept simple for a country wedding. Only adding a few details in jewlery such as a simple necklace with your initial and a couple of light rings.
He loved to see you in dresses.
He loved to see you in everything.
He loved to see you with everything off.
…
You entered your hotel room with your heels in your hands. You trow them away and got off your dress. Took your make off and got ready for bed.
It was precisely 3.45 am when your phone started to ring.
With your eyes still close, your hand was searching the noise in your nightstand. Without looking you answered.
“Hello?” You grunt frowning
“Hey” you noticed his voice and quickly sat up.
“Brad?” Your other hand was scratching your eyes and you checked the call ID
“B🐻”
It was him endeed.
“What’s wrong?”
“I’m outside…”
You were caught by surprise and sat up quickly. The room spinning.
“What-Here? why?”
“I can’t go another night without you”
