Hi, you said to resend if you didn't get to our ask a week after the 15th. I have a little over two year old female corn snake (about 325g) and I recently switched her from f/t large mice (about 19g) to f/t fuzzy rats (about 25g). She seems a lot more active, like she's searching for food, and I'm worried the fuzzies aren't filling her up. Do fuzzy rats have about the same nutritional value as large mice? None of the pet stores near me sell XL mice, so if that's the best option for her I'd have to either find a specialist store or order them online.
Slightly unrelated, but do you have any advice about getting her to stop climbing up the walls of her tank and going along the space at the top of her tank? I'm not worried about her escaping, but I hear her fall in the middle of the night and I'm worried she's going to hurt herself. She has tall things to climb in the tank.
Hello hello! The nutritional value of rats and mice are very similar, but on average rats are actually leaner than mice. Since you're feeding fuzzies, though, their age means they're fattier so it makes sense that she's feeling a little extra energy! In general, you get very similar nutrition from both, so it's nothing to be really worried about, I promise.
(If you're worried that she's still hungry, you could stand to go up a size. I prefer to feed my snakes about 10-15% of their body weight in each meal as a general rule, so a feeder for her could be in the 32-48 gram range and be appropriate.)
As for the climbing...a corn snake is just going to climb, I'm afraid! I wouldn't be too worried about a fall hurting her, though, thankfully. You can try providing novel climbing enrichment and see if it entices her! My corns really like ladder-shaped climbing toys made for birds.

has anyone figured out how much the dehydrator increases the value?
from 5 common mushrooms (200g at base) i got 325g (+60% or +125g) but i got more than double from dried salmonberries (62g, base value is 20g)
i wonder if it's different for fruit and mushrooms

Reminder to bake bread tomorrow, I really hope the instant yeast is not extremely dead. Photo from my last baking with double the amount.
Recipe, I cannot recall where I got it but all recipes for milk bread with tangzhong roux are basically the same:
tangzhong mixture: 3 tbsp flour (24g) 1/4 cup milk (60ml) 1/4 cup water (60ml)
Thicken roux over a low heat, stirring constantly, about a minute.
dough: 2 1/2 cup flour (325g) sugar (25-50g, to taste) 2tsp yeast (7g) 1 tsp salt give or take 1 egg 1/2 cup milk (120ml) 4 tbsp butter (56g) 1/4 cup flour for dusting
Warm milk in microwave, dissolve yeast into it.
Mix dry ingredients (flour, salt, sugar) in a bowl.
Beat egg into milk mixture.
Add milk mixture and roux to flour. It will look like an unmanageable mess, keep kneading for ~10 minutes.
Add softened butter, knead for ~10 more minutes until dough is smooth and a little sticky. Sweet The MI’s video doesn’t use the same recipe but it shows how bread dough goes from complete hell to a smooth ball if you keep at it.
Form into ball, let rise 1 hour.
(At this stage, you can store the uncooked dough in the fridge to bake the next day, I think the cold-ferment actually might improve the bread a bit. It just will need time to get to room temperature before the next step.)
Form into loaf or whatever shape you wish, proof 40 minutes.
Bake in 350 F oven for 35-40 minutes.

2 Jan 24 - My first bake of 2024, a nice sourdough sandwich loaf.
I think I've finally found a balance of effort and payoff that fits my schedule. Longer ferments give a more sour flavour (which I like!) but require more previse handling, and more adherence to scheduling (which hasn't been my forte).
I used a combination of active starter and discard for this bread, with a shorter BF than usual (probably a "normal" amount of time). This combination seems to give a bread with strength (gluten integrity) of a short ferment, but the flavour of a longer one.
This will probably be my go-to method from now on. It's incredibly satisfying to produce this bread in one (-ish) day!
Approximate recipe:
Mix together:
300g (active starter + discard, combined weight)
325g AP flour
225g water
1 tsp gluten
25g sugar
Let sit for 1-2 hours.
Add:
50g (spelt and rye flour mix)
22g sunflower oil
12g salt
Gently squeeze dough to incorporate, then knead gently.
BF approx 3h or until doubled.
Laminate: turn out dough and stretch flat. Letter-fold: fold in thirds. Shape: roll to form a tight sandwich loaf, tuck in ends.
Place in prepared loaf tin (line with parchment, dust with flour, sprinkle some cornmeal in bottom). Let rise 2.5-3 hours or until puffy.
Preheat oven, including Dutch Oven (DO), at 380F.
Slash loaf.
Place the loaf tin inside the DO, add a bit of water, cover immediately. Bake in oven at 380F for approx 10 min.
Remove lid of DO. Continue baking at 380F for another 30 min.
Remove from tin, cool on wire rack, cover with a linen (breathable) cloth overnight.
