You and your boyfriend, Miles, had been dating for around 10 months or so. He didn't have the best reputation with the faculty, skipping out on certain classes, having the lowest participation score out of most of the students, and overall wasn't a very happy camper. It's not like his grades were bad, oh hell no! He just wasn't a very optimistic person and opted to fade into the background of most people's lives. Which for some reason had the opposite effect, inducing random girls and, very very rarely, boys to throw themselves at him just to say 'I know Miles.'

Now when he decided to join his school's basketball team, shit only got worse for him. He used to eat his food in the lunch room until a pool of girls decided to sit near him in an attempt to snatch his attention. This obviously pissed Miles off even more, pushing him further back into the shadows and closing himself off even more from the people around him. So he decided to eat in the library. It was empty for the most part, with about 5 students eating together and talking, one of them being you. There you sat with your group of girls, chatting away about random topics, ignoring the rather aggressive slam of the library door. For you, it was just another lunch before you went back to your classes.

As you skipped to your 5th-period class, you parted ways with your friend Kayla as you prepared to be assigned the 2-person project your teacher had gone over yesterday. You obviously weren't a fan of work, but you were excited regardless to choose your partner. So when class got started and the teacher announced he would be ASSIGNING your partners? Honey, you were pissed off. The class erupted full of irritated groans and 'Oh my god's as he listed off the names, choosing the oddest combos you'd ever heard in your life. He called your name, and then Miles as you rolled your eyes slightly. Really, you wanted to be with your best friend Amai, but you didn't have much of a choice, did you?

When the teacher finished reading off the list of pairs, everyone scattered across the room to sit next to their partner. So you moved accordingly, scooting your desk over to Miles's with a couple of noisy scrapes. He wasn't exactly rude, just didn't really seem interested. You really didn't feel like explaining what you wanted to do to someone who wasn't listening, so you just decided to compromise.

"Look, we don't have to talk at all, but at least come find me today so we can work on this project. We don't even have to speak, just correct something or write notes on the slides."

So you met every day for the next 2 weeks in the library, with Miles gradually warming up to you as you spent more time together. He went from saying 2-3 words a day to you to having full-fledged debates on random topics. Even when the project was over, he still hung around. Inviting you to watch him practice for his games, putting you on his cfs story on insta, and stationing you in the front row every time he had a basketball game without fail. So it wasn't necessarily a surprise when he asked you out.

You snuck around together for the next 10 months, not really wanting to deal with questions about each other. You had grades to keep up, and he didn't want to attract any attention. Spending minimal time together during school hours but hanging out in Miles's dorm or his house after hours, spending countless nights in each other's arms. He asked you to come to yet another one of his basketball games, to which you happily agreed to make an appearance.

You sat on the benches as you silently cheered for Miles, giving him discreet little heart signs and blowing tiny kisses in his direction every now and again. He winked at you, and no sooner than he did you heard a girl behind you begin to blab on.

"Bitch he winked at me! Oh my god!"

You felt a vein in your temple tense, exercising all of the strength in your body to not turn around. She stepped down a row, sitting slightly close to you as you watched her wave frantically, which Miles ignored. The game went on for about another 45 minutes, with Home scoring the winning shot. The court erupted with loud cheering, you had that same amount of school pride as you yelled along with the crowd. As the team celebrated in the middle of the court, a few players walked over to whoever was important to them in the crowd fixed on the benches.

Miles made a quick glance at you before briefly nodding backward, indicating for him to follow him to the back like you would usually do. Just as you were getting your stuff ready, that dumb bimbo quickly hopped up to grab at his arm. He wasted absolutely zero time in pushing her off, giving her a rather stern "I have a girlfriend. Back the fuck up, thank you." with a grimace that said nothing but pure disgust. He jogged up to you, pulling you from the front of the bleachers and pulling you into a deep kiss. A couple people perked up at the action, watching as two people who seemingly didn't even know each other casually kissed in the middle of the court.

Bitches were mad that day, their delusions coming to a very sharp halt as the reality of Miles's girlfriend smacked them like a backhand from Floyd Mayweather. But you didn't give a single fuck as Miles cooed a gentle "I love you, mi amor." Into your ear. You knew who he preferred over everyone in the school; that mattered to you.

I did catch on to that part of it with him bouncing between jobs so frequently, and some of the other things like the fridge freezer, but they were still included in the jumbled up thoughts I listed out partly because I was thinking about them before coming to an answer, and partly because I'm not fully sure if those answers are all there is to it.

Cause, yeah, there’s the newspaper clipping rebuking him for being “unprofessional and brash” (which damn that’s also just rotating in my head because Vince was clearly reading this specific clipping earlier and blatantly lied saying Rody hadn’t been mentioned at all, later scribbling out the section talking about the waiter), he’s very clearly messy and unkempt in pretty much every aspect of his life, and even if he gets the to-go question right in the tutorial, Vince appends the "Good work." with "keep tone in mind."

But, the thing is, he does know a lot of the basics. Much of the tutorial is really just for the benefit of the player to know how the mechanics of the game works, Rody meanwhile nods along and does whatever task is needed without comment, only getting tripped up when Vince mentions the way the menu for his bistro works, and when the aforementioned customer asked if he could get boxes to go or call in his order ahead of time. Which I think are reasonable things to get tripped up on! Those seem like things that would vary depending on the establishment he was working for.

I keep thinking about his reaction when Vince pivoted the conversation of "do you actually like your job" onto Rody. His awkward response that it paid him money. Vince voicing specifically “I doubt you wanted to wait tables for a living-”, and that being met with how there was “something” Rody went to school for, that he was too hesitant to tell Vince, feeling he’d get made fun of. The impression that its some passion he had that just didn't work out. The revelation later that the “something” in question was him majoring in hospitality.

He was afraid he'd be made fun of for actively going to school and choosing to study for skills that, either ironically or purposefully, would've been useful for his current job of waiting tables. A goal that he flunked out of. He has had 28 jobs in the service industry over the course of 7 years. He keeps losing his job, but he also keeps getting hired.

I keep thinking of the post-credits scene of the Best Served Hot, whisky lemon cake ending. "I can't keep watching you ruin any semblance of progress you make with yourself while trying to make me happy, it's exhausting-"

He's only 4 days into this job when he approaches Vince for a raise. He already figures he'll have enough to do something nice for Manon, his "girlfriend," by the end of the week, but he wants more to make it really special. He is very clearly told 'no.'

On the 5th day, when his shift is finally over and done, we don't next see him as we usually do, back at his apartment. He's still at the bistro, all the lights turned out. The only other person presumably being Vince hacking away at the meat in the freezer that'll be used for the meals in the morning. The first time I went through that night, I presumed Rody had just been selected to stay late and help clean up for the night, with whatever Vince was doing in the background ominous horror ambience to be unsettled by.

But we can't really do anything while there that would support this initial assumption. There are only two things you can do. Snoop around in Vince's office, and... steal from the cash register. Whether you avoid doing the latter as I did or not, it has no bearing on whatever ending you get, but just the fact that it's even an option to Rody...

How many other times did he allow his love for Manon to rule over his decisions, making choices in the pursuit of what he believed would make her happy, no matter the cost, before finally facing a price for his obsession beyond the scope of his worst nightmares?

And after all that I do want to defend the rollerskates a bit because

Rollerskates in restaurants are kinda a thing, in the 1960s (the year this game is set) they were a pretty popular gimmick/tool for diners in the U.S. at least, not sure about elsewhere in the world unfortunately

Yeah he canonically brought and proceeded to wear rollerskates to work at a fancy bistro. But that also means Vince watched him show up to work one day, wearing rollerskates, and just let him do it. Just watched Rody roll around his fancy bistro attending to customers that expect the highest of professionalism, and said nothing.

Author's note: I think it's been about 3 years since I first had a vague idea about wanting to write a fic like this, which started out as merely a cute slice of life fic (without all the filth y'all are about to witness lol), went through many different changes and was abandoned as many times, until through lots of inspiration and ideas it finally took on the form it has now. And I'm really happy that I was finally able to turn it into an actual fic and not just a few unfinished drafts! I hope you guys have fun with this and enjoy~

Draco's Motivations in the Book 7 Room of Requirement Confrontation

I just reread the Fiendfyre sequence and based on a close reading Draco's motivations and actions are a lot more complex and sympathetic than I remembered. Not to mention, once again, here there be drarry.

First, the context:

After the incident at Malfoy Manor, we know from Harry's psychic connection to Voldemort and from the Carrows' overheard discussion that Voldemort's wrath was exceptionally terrible. The Malfoy family became virtual prisoners in their own homes for months and were subjected to especially brutal (even by Voldemort's standards) torture that was also likely quite protracted. Lucius has visible marks on him months later - which, given what we know about magic in that world, really speaks to the level of what has been going on. While he probably got the worst of it, it's certain that none of his family members escaped unscathed. After their other failings they have at this point probably permanently fallen out of favor and have nothing but a (likely short) life of misery to look forward to.

Draco bears a lot of responsibility for this state of affairs since it was he who chose not to identify Harry. This likely adds to his sense of conflict as his conscience tells him one thing and everything he has ever been taught tells him something else. He presumably feels responsible for the suffering his family (we know from book 6 that he does genuinely care about them) has to endure.

Not to mention that he himself is suffering along with them. It would be unsurprising therefore if he felt tempted to "rectify" his earlier moment of what he probably perceived as weakness and made a last ditch attempt to save his parents' (and his own) lives and prestige. While Harry has been taught that love and mercy are noble and valuable impulses, Draco has not. In his world love and mercy are called weakness.

Quite possibly as he suffered and faced death alongside his family, part of him must have felt ashamed of the impulses that led to his choices when Harry was a prisoner at the Manor. Everything he has been taught tells him that Voldemort's victory is inevitable and that his moment of shameful weakness has accomplished nothing except to fail his own family and condemn them (and himself) to a likely short life filled with suffering.

At most what we see in the Room of Requirement is a replay of what we saw on the Astronomy Tower - where Draco is deeply conflicted and when confronted with the reality of violence in support of Voldemort cannot go through with it even under tremendous pressure and even though his failure to carry out these acts of violence will inflict danger and suffering on himself and his loved ones.

But, is that even what actually happens? In my opinion, the answer is "no."

The scene in question:

If we actually look at the text it's not even clear that's what's going on at all. Draco's motives are ambiguous at best here. The scene starts when Harry is stretching out his hand to take the diadem. Draco, Crabbe, and Goyle come up behind him and he is completely unaware of them. Draco then announces their presence, alerting Harry that he is being watched. He could've very easy simply stunned Harry or attempted to put the Imperius Curse on him (or killed him) while his back was turned. But he didn't do any of those things. Instead he talks, thereby ruining the element of surprise.

And that's not typical of Draco at all when he actually wants to attack Harry. He's never beaten Harry in a face-to-face confrontation. (In fact, the last time he tried - in 6th year - he almost ended up dead.) The two times he has managed to incapacitate Harry - when he petrified him on the train in 6th year and when he hid and caught Harry for Umbridge with a tripping jinx in 5th year - he did so by using the element of surprise to his advantage.

Given that Draco knows that Harry is a very formidable opponent (AND that Harry's friends are nearby) if he truly simply wanted to capture or kill him, announcing his presence is the last thing he would ever do. Then he says "That's my wand you're holding." He still doesn't cast any spells - not even to try to disarm Harry. He also doesn't say he wants to hand him over to Voldemort. He doesn't even tell Harry to drop his own wand, attempt to take him prisoner, or even threaten him.

It is Crabbe, not Draco who says "We're gonna be rewarded...We decided to bring you to 'im." Draco doesn't say anything about his own intentions other than that he wants his wand back - and we certainly know that even in 6th year he didn't trust Crabbe and Goyle, much less now, and thus is unlikely to speak openly in front of them.

At this point Ron comes to investigate and Crabbe tries to use magic to cause a mountain of debris to fall on Ron and crush him. Harry counters the spell and Draco then grabs Crabbe's arm when he tries to repeat the spell. He gives as his justification the need to avoid the diadem being crushed but since we know he doesn't trust Crabbe it's likely this isn't truthful. Especially since Voldemort has not said anything about wanting the diadem (and even if it wasn't a Horcrux it likely wouldn't be damaged in any case).

Crabbe points out this very thing and Draco argues with him at which point Crabbe says "Who cares what you think? I don't take your orders no more, Draco. You an' your dad are finished." So arguably he was not even including Draco in the "We" he imagined would be rewarded. Crabbe then tries to use Crucio on Harry.

Draco then again intervenes and tries to stop him.

"STOP" Malfoy shouted at Crabbe, his voice echoing through the enormous room. "The Dark Lord wants him alive--"

He doesn't even just say it. He shouts. We rarely see Draco shout. He is someone who generally keeps his deeper emotions hidden - it's why he's so naturally gifted at Occlumency to the point that he is powerful enough at a young age to lie to both Snape and Voldemort.

What he says here doesn't really even make sense because Goyle isn't even trying to kill Harry; he's just trying to hurt him. However Draco is so distressed by this that he actually starts yelling, something we NEVER see him do at ANY other point in the book. "The Dark Lord wants him alive" is also exactly what Snape says to Bellatrix as they flee in book 6, and we know that Snape's real intent was to protect Harry with a believable excuse. It's the only thing Draco could reasonably say in that moment as a justification.

Crabbe (rather sensibly) points out that 1) he didn't even try to kill Harry and 2) Voldemort ultimately wants Harry dead so it probably doesn't matter that much. This makes perfect sense. And yet Draco is inordinately concerned with preventing harm to Harry & Co rather than with taking any action to capture or even disarm any of them.

Clearly he did not expect to lose control of Crabbe and Goyle like this and as a result is now losing control of the situation (and himself). (Unlike Harry, Draco is more of a planner and is not as good at reacting in the moment.) Also the possibility that Harry could be killed seems to drive him nearly to the point of hysteria - rather like how Ron reacted to Hermione being in mortal peril at the Manor. This is not just a general aversion to killing. This is something more. He finds the idea of Harry dying truly unbearable. (I don't need my ships to be canon; this one just happens to be.)

At this point they start fighting and Draco loses Narcissa's wand. Wandless, he STILL tries to intervene. Crabbe and Goyle are both aiming their wands at Harry and Draco once again starts yelling - "Don't kill him! DON'T KILL HIM!" and is obviously in significant distress and is not at all happy with what is going on.

After that the Fiendfyre gets loose and the rest of the scene goes down without much dialogue.

At NO POINT does Draco 1) actually say he wants to hand Harry to Voldemort OR 2) attempt to attack Harry or Ron or Hermione at all OR 3) use his Dark Mark to call Voldemort OR 4) tell anyone he's seen Harry after they get out of the Room of Requirement - even in a later scene when he's been cornered by a Death Eater who is considering killing him he doesn't reveal this information even though that probably would've proven his loyalty or at the very least distracted the Death Eater.

Conclusions about Draco's motivations:

So, where does that leave us? What went down there and what was Draco trying to do?

We really have 3 options.

Option 1: Draco tried to hand Harry over to Voldemort in order to save himself and his family, got cold feet and couldn't really go through with it, and then lost control of the situation due to Crabbe and Goyle's changing loyalties.

Verdict: Possible but unlikely given the remarkably bad job he does of it and how inconsistent his approach is with his usual MO. Even if we assume his heart wasn't in it you'd think he'd at least have got as far as disarming Harry before announcing his presence. Especially since Harry almost killed him last time they fought (and Draco probably doesn't know Harry didn't know what the Sectum Sempra curse would do.)

And if his heart WAS in it then then this makes even less sense since he not only didn't attack Harry while his back was turned but also didn't call Voldemort or even inform anyone that he'd seen Harry.

Option 2: Draco wanted to get himself captured in a way that looked convincing so that he could take the chance Dumbledore offered in 6th year, only it went quite badly wrong.

Verdict: This would be an interesting possibility but I think it's also unlikely as it's simply too risky. He doesn't know Harry was there on the astronomy tower or that Harry would make the same offer. His family would also likely be murdered if Voldemort realized this had happened.

Option 3: Draco wanted to cut a deal in order to improve his family's situation without actually handing Harry over - perhaps he hoped for some kind of exchange where he could get his wand back and bring Voldemort the diadem as some kind of consolation prize - but overestimated his control over his cronies and lost control of the situation.

Verdict: I actually think this works best given his behavior during the scene. He initiates a conversation because he wants information about what and where the diadem is (and what value it would have to Voldemort) and because he wants to make some offer along the lines of 'give me my wand and the diadem and we'll let you go.' This could get him what he wants and help his family without actually harming anyone.

Also it hedges his bets a bit because if Harry wins he will owe Draco. The problem of course is that Crabbe and Goyle aren't happy to just take orders anymore and have their own goals. At that point, instead of caving and going along with what Crabbe and Goyle want to do instead, Draco actually tries to intervene, albeit in a way that doesn't actually expose him as questioning Voldemort.

Draco made his choice at the Manor. If he wanted to hand Harry over he would have. But he couldn't. He cares about him too much. But he also feels tremendous guilt and fear over the price he and his family are still paying for that decision. This is his attempt to try to fix things - to try to find a middle ground between the conflicting imperatives that are tearing him apart. The reality though, as he shortly discovers, is that there is no middle ground. And when he sees that, once again he chooses Harry.

i love karna fate grand order so fucking much because in serious grail wars he’s an extremely fascinating, imposing, and badass character who just has this unique, grand air about him, he looks almost otherworldly and speaks with such purpose yet personality, and he has a huge amount of power, but he's dangerous because he does hold back until he either feels the need or is instructed to just explode everything

but nearly all the rest of the time he exists he is an autism creature in the shape of a gender man who just happens to have godly powers

he may look pretty and composed but do not be fooled. this is the glowy body horror god baby. he is a Huge Dork(tm). he never knows what to do with his face. when given the choice to wear whatever casual clothes he wants he dresses like an arts college student who just tossed on 2-3 layers of whatever was laying around on their dorm floor before heading to the nearest whole foods. his ass is the posterchild for flat fuck friday. he absorbed the meathead jock braincells from the guys he hung out with in life and during christmas he goes full unga bunga about it

in vibes alone karna is like a goofy baby albatross compared to his brother who may as well like the perfectly sleek and beautiful adult ones with the perfect eyeliner in comparison. which is ironic, because karna already has the natural makeup (also, once again, do not be fooled, arjuna is a screaming disaster on the inside, but that's a love post for another day)

i think one of my fav examples of the contrast between ~beautiful ikemen~ karna and absolutely clueless fucking loser karna is that bit in the 5th anni pv where there's that shot of him oh so cooly popping open a bottle of champagne, and he's got the bishie sparkle going on, and looks sooooooo pretty in his fancy clothes,

and then you realize

he just soaked arjuna with it, probably entirely obliviously

Celebrating You!

Hi guys! I’ve been on here for a bit now and while I never had a follower goal, I do appreciate you guys who have decided to follow me! So now I’d like to celebrate you!

In light of TBB ending, and how much we'll be missing the boys, I thought this was as good as a time as ever!

Here’s the idea! I’m opening a prompt request for the dates of April 5th through May 5th, 2024 (you may start submitting now though!) and choose from the prompts below! You can choose one from each category, or just one category. It’s ok if it is just the prompt or the prompt and a brief idea. If you have a fun idea or prompt not listed, please share!

Rules: I only write SFW. I typically write for clones; I reserve the right to refuse requests which make me uncomfortable for whatever reason. I have had a few requests in the past that really unsettled me for various reasons. Or if I don't know the character. I'd hate to try to write something then upset the person because it is so ooc that it's cringy. (But if I said I would write your request and haven't yet, I just honestly haven't gotten to it :D I like to do well on the stories you guys entrust to me so it does take me a bit :D)

- [ ] Aquarius moon people I’ve met, most of them act against the norm. For example, if most of their co-worker follow some stupid rules in a workplace, they won’t follow that.

- [ ] Leo stellium = strong Leo characteristics (I said Leo because it’s the most obvious one)

- [ ] Pluto trine Ascendant natal are just smooth, get along well with people and also make people feel at ease and calm when being around these natives. They are really charming and people seem to trust them even in the first meet.

- [ ] Also Pluto trine Ascendant from my experience, they don’t exude s*x appeal much. not obvious like conjunction and square ones. S*x appeal is subtle for this aspect(trine)

- [ ] I’ve noticed that some Scorpios (Rising or moon) will try to avoid holding too long eye contact when talking or interacting with people. As if they just know that if they do that, it will make people uncomfortable and intimidated by them. (Not sure tho, let me know if you do this). Also can apply to Pluto-Ascendant harsh aspects.

Now I wanna start this off with these are my personal observations and what I think makes sense. So some things may not apply to everyone, and always keep in mind you may have aspects to certain planets and other contributing factors to negate some of the stuff I list!

You don't know how much I want this character. You don't understand but I just gotta ask

Is This ATSV Character Thai?

aka a crash course in Thai tattooing and Buddhist tradition

Please correct me if I'm wrong - but I was really interested in her tattoo.

And looking at the tattoo they singled out beside her - it made me question:

Is that a Traditional Thai tattoo? Is that supposed to be Sak Yant?

And immediately I saw the opportunity to infodump about Buddhism and Thai cultural tattooing! (And my personal experience with it)

It makes me think that maybe this character was meant to me Thai - because her tiger tattoo resembles the twin tiger Sak Yant tattoo.

If you're unaware, Sak Yant is a type of traumatic tattoo native to Thailand.

Connected deeply to the Buddhist faith, Sak Yant tattoos are specific designs that are claimed to have spiritual power.

Typically done with a traditional needle and stick rather than a machine, Sak Yants are tattooed by a Thai Buddhist teacher, an Ajarn.

Each Sak Yant design grants the wearer fortune, protection, or a virtue relating to a Buddhist value.

Each Yant comes with conditions though.

In order to preserve the spiritual power of the tattoo, the wearer just act in accordance to certain standards of Buddhist teaching - simple things like no murder, no adultery/cheating, no lying, etc.

They say if you do these things, your Yant becomes useless over time.

Many Muay Thai fighters have many Sak Yants, typically for protection - which could be the reason she's wearing herself.

However, that doesn't necessarily mean that she's Thai - for one, the tattoo might not be a Sak Yant.

It doesn't exactly match a true Sak Yant design, however, it's fairly close.

It seems as if the creators mixed the Suea Liaw (left) and Suea Koo Maha (right) designs, combining them to form the unique design for the character.

This would be an interesting choice.

The Twin Tigers are one of the favorites of Muay Thai, as it represents protection, power, and authority, which could be useful to sometime working a bar like her.

However, it also seems similar to the Yant 'Suea Leaw Lung' - tattoo similar to Suea Liaw - except with a raised paw, much like hers. Leaw Lung is said (grain of salt unless you're hearing from a Ajarn though) - to bring positivity and safety to those struggling in life.

So the tattoo might not be a Sak Yant - or it could be a Yant style created specifically by the creators of ATSV (as they may have wanted to avoid using a real one, as they're really hard to do unless you're an Ajarn and know the symbols and language).

And also, not everyone who gets one is Thai - though many who get it are Buddhist.

Like me!

Angelina Jolie is popular for the number of Yants she has on her back.

Angelina is in fact a Buddhist and has raised her children within the religion*.

She, like most other Buddhists, got hers done traditionally, under the hand of a Ajarn.

The one in the center of her back - is actually the one I have as well.

Religiously, I am a Theravada Buddhist - though I more focus on the Plum Tree Tradition of Thigh Nhat Hanh.

Theravada Buddhism is the type most prevalent in South East Asia, in contrast with the Nepali and Tibetan Mahayana - which the Dhali Lama belongs to.

I got my Sak Yant done under the hand of an Arhat as well, traditional needle style about 3 years ago in Chiang Mai (Northern Thailand)

The one I have is Yant Putsoorn - the 5 Buddhas yantra.

Although there are many vague ass descriptions of what each Yant means online - my Ajarn personally told me Putsoorn is aimed at raised compassion mindfulness towards yourself and others as well - usually known as loving-kindness.

So she could be specifically Buddhist as well, if the tattoo is supposed to be Yant.

I think the idea is so so cool, because you may see traditional Japanese tattoo designs, many breathtaking , but it's rare you see other forms of traditional tattoo in day to day media!

I really really want to see her in action now! Just to see that tattoo up close. Plus she's so bad-ass!

I was SO SO SO excited to see her tattoo, and I really hope it is one! More Buddhist characters please. You can be hardcore and Buddhist too!

But does anybody have any other theories of what this tattoo could be? Do you know why traditional designs outside of Yant that this could be? Do you agree this could be Yant?

* Just a bonus: I wanted to highlight my use of the word religion in reference to Buddhism. Often in the West, Buddhism is reduced to a 'philosohy' or 'a way of life' rather than a legitimate religion. This is reductive. Buddhism is a religion, with monks, nuns, plains of existence, 'heavens' (very different context than Abrahamic - being reborn in heaven actually makes it harder to reach nirvana, because you are tempted by more comfort. Being born on Earth is the easier way to reach nirvana). Buddhism has ceremonies and centuries worth of text and practice - like Sak Yant. Although it is centered in mindfulness, acceptance, and love - and these teachings can be used by anyone regardless of religion - Buddhism is a religion. Just one far removed from the western Abrahamic understanding of religion. You can read and encorporate any of the teachings, it's very very very open. There are no borders between people, and any heart that is open or desiring it can engage with Buddhism as much or as little as they need to. But I think it's important to refer to Buddhism as a religion so the world conversation on religion isn't centered on Abrahamic, Western ideals and history - when in fact there are many loving, kind, and rich religions out there. From Hoodoo, to Sikhism, to Buddhism and beyond :)

Self-care for the Soul: Hinamori's Edition

(Or, my 2am rambles on Hinamori that briefly touch on nonviolence while I lightly express some fandom guilt ft. one mention of Frankenstein and some Tobiume hc 🫠 Thank you @bleachbleachbleach for your encouraging words on this post! <33)

TL;DR: Much of Hinamori’s external life has been chosen for her. She thrives at exercising a form of internal non-violence of the spirit, where despite the lack of tools (as a Rukongai ghost) and later in spite of the master’s tools (the Seireitei), she asserts her power through choice - choosing to love, defend, create - through which she fights back against the institution that created and enabled the violence inflicted upon her. This is in her nature, always has been since she befriended Hitsugaya to rescuing Hisagi.

Sometimes I feel like such a fake Hinamori fan because I worry that my interpretations discredit her character, which isn't what I want at all! With regards to Aizen and forgiveness, I get a sense that the popular belief is that it is in Hinamori's nature or best interest to come to reject everything about their relationship, that she would even hate him, want to enact some form of violence on him. And that's all fine! I mean, anything is believable if you come at characterization from the lens of “what would make a character do XYZ?"….but I just can't help but feel like this is us (or at least me) moving on without her - which is how Hinamori canonically felt post-Winter War (and I would go so far as to say she's been feeling like this for a long time, since before leaving for the academy).

Like, would it help Hinamori to hate everything about him? To reject all of him? What is she, someone who deeply values her relationships and what she gets from them as much as she gives, choosing to leave behind by doing so? So much of her (external) life happens to her: she has to enter the academy because her powers awakened, she was pre-selected to join the 5th division for a plan that started decades before her and would be put into motion a few decades later, and of course both stabbings.

Given this, I think Hinamori is someone who appreciates making a choice of what she's given, often internal, often against the status quo, and gains exactly what she needs. She chooses to befriend Hitsugaya despite the village's rejection of him (and finds herself a lifetime partner); she stays behind to give Hitsugaya a proper goodbye even though it'll make her late to the academy on her first day (to keep Rukongai close which feels especially important given Seireitei wants to neglect, forget what's outside their walls); she chooses to save Hisagi against his orders (and years later she can look back and know she's brave); she chooses to defend Renji despite Byakuya's authority and Kira's acquiescence (and realizes that to stand up for what she believes in she may be the only one in the room left). And if she chooses to hold close the fond memories she created with Aizen and the lessons she learned from him, she'll know that under all his power laid her power too.

These choices she made are all born from her internal character and I think that's something she tries to hold onto (even when it feels like everyone is moving on without her, that the narrative is moving on without her, that fandom sometimes moves on without her).

And it's not because of the naivety or delusion that's so often attributed to her. It's this instinct to create, to save, to love, despite the lack of tools (and then in spite of the tools). I don't think it's far-fetched to believe that she, an artist who spends her free time reading (about history and fantasy, about the past and the future) would try to create what she needs, imperfect as it is. Hinamori has always been a "be the change you want to see" type of person.

Unlike Hisagi who fears his power in his own hands, Hinamori fears her power in the hands of others. In a way, it's a rejection of the Seireitei. In a way, it's a rejection of the institution that created and enabled the violence inflicted upon her.

(Another reason why I feel like a fake Hinamori fan is because I don't think she needs bankai to tie up her arc or to prove/reclaim her power. Like I mentioned above, I think Hinamori does a pretty solid job of reclaiming her power outside of Seireitei's tools. Bankai feels almost like a resignation to me. It's hard to explain without needing 2000+ words and referencing Frankenstein, the internal/spiritual nature of nonviolence of a solider, and elaborating on Hisagi and Kaname because these two are very much part of the same conversation.

But anyways! My Tobiume hc plays into all of this. It's pretty much the same as the rest of the fandom's - some iteration of a phoenix + forest (I love the seagull cry when Tobiume releases and this imagery of being rooted deep in the earth with an expansive sky to soar above this middle space where the man-made sits), but I hc that she's never really been able to see Tobiume. That Tobiume always wants to keep just out of sight, perched high in the trees or a shadow over the sun to keep her wondering because Hinamori is an artist (who once had no brushes), a life-long learner (who once had no books), and I think it’d be neat if her inner world was something she created out of imagination and hunger for somewhere beyond her body and something beyond the constraints of their society. What does Elsa want?

Since I’ve been on a bit of a Frozen binge recently, I was having some thoughts:

If anyone’s been in the Frozen fandom for as long as I have, we’ve all wondered whether Elsa would ever become attached to someone. The early Jelsa shippers, Helsa (which I do ship, I have my reasons, don’t @ me), #giveelsaagirlfriend trending on twitter, the newer Elsamaren shippers, and so on. Ever since Disney realized the franchise potential of this story, that's been the big question brought up for the past decade.

I will say I can definitely understand the perception of Elsa being aromantic/asexual because honestly, think about it: considering her past struggles with controlling her powers and her fear of hurting those she loves, it’s probably very difficult for her to be vulnerable with other people, even platonically with her own family. If she was that uncomfortable being around others and trying to manage her issues, how uncomfortable is she with being in love? Being desired? Wanting to be with someone?

No matter what options they go with for her in the 3rd sequel, it might be an interesting perspective to see this more vulnerable side of Elsa, if they choose to give her a romantic partner, because for the past two movies we’ve only gotten the perspective of her focusing on herself. She wanted to learn the truth of who she was and to make her peace with it, no longer denying her magical abilities or trying to shove them down out of fear. She wanted to reconnect with her sister and try to have a family again. But what does Elsa want for herself beyond that? Who can really stand on her level and approach her?

In spite of her connections with her sister and the rest of her family, there is still a level of unapproachability to her because of the dissonance between her humanity and the almost mythic nature of her powers. Even though Anna loves her sister, we can observe that even she struggles sometimes to understand Elsa’s powers, especially her role as the Snow Queen/the 5th Spirit, and Anna falls back in awe of her like everyone else. It’s like this quote from the movie The Philadelphia Story (which is a great movie btw, highly recommend):

“You're like some marvelous, distant, well, queen, I guess. You're so cool and fine and always so much your own. There's a kind of beautiful purity about you, Tracy, like a statue.”

To which Katharine Hepburn’s character replies:

“I don't want to be worshipped. I want to be loved.”

Does Elsa want that kind of love? So far, the answer’s been a tentative “no,” at least from the writers and cast. Whether it's because of the potential conservative outcry or disappointing the lgbtq community yet again is anyone's guess, but for now I can only assume that leaving her unattached has been the safest option for Disney so far.

But since we’ve already crossed the threshold of Elsa’s self-acceptance and self-realization of her powers, where do we go beyond that in terms of her character? It’s only natural to wonder what she wants beyond understanding herself, being comfortable with her powers, and being accepted. She has a supportive family, is making friendships with the Northuldra, and has a kingdom that loves her, but does she stand alone or can someone meet her at her level? Romantically or otherwise? Who can challenge her, really?

Tracy Lord: "I don't seem to you made of bronze?"

Macaulay Connor: "No, you're made out of flesh and blood. That's the blank, unholy surprise of it. You're the golden girl, Tracy. Full of life and warmth and delight.”

Does she have to remain this mythic goddess that everyone admires, who has to have a dress transformation/inspiration anthem about self-actualization every movie? What if she had a moment where she was grounded and had to focus on something besides her powers? What if she lost them? How would that affect her character then?

Those are questions I hope might be answered in Frozen 3. I'm fine with whatever choices they make in terms of her sexuality, as precarious at that may be, but I just think it would be an interesting aspect of her character to explore whether or not she could have an equal, or whether or not she can finally come down to earth.

Tracy Lord: "How do I look?"

Seth Lord: "Like a queen. Like a goddess."

Tracy Lord: "And do you know how I feel?"

Seth Lord: "How?"

Tracy Lord: "Like a human. Like a human being.”

So, you get asked about PK and WL a lot, in part because you're realistic about them being nuanced. I've rarely ever seen folks ask you about the Radiance, though, even you've mentioned you give her the same treatment. So, you got any headcanons, heartcanons, and gutcanons for her? Feel free to do as many as you want!

Okay so I long forgot the headcanon, heartcanon, gutcanon ask template because I've been chewing on this since [checks date] September 5th 2020, so instead you get a long ramble on the Radiance vs individual hcs for her since I don't really talk about her as much as I do the pale fam

Radiance...hm. She's a very complex character who frightens me on some personal levels, but I really am quite fond of her reguardless, because part of what scares me about her is how closely her anger mirrors my own (and that of my immidiate family). She reminds me very much of the aspects of myself and a few choice individuals in my blood relations that I do my best to avoid, rather than have a delight of a time pointing and laughing at, like I do with the flaws of myself I see in the Pale King. Except Radiance doesn't just have those flaws, she's also got the added Christian crusader imagery that decrees the death of anyone who opposes her that also reminds me quite a bit about certain things in my life I'd very much rather go without (I was raised Muslim. I'm sure you can connect the dots). So there is a level of discomfort there that keeps me from engaging with her character on the same level that I do with Hollow and the Pale King, which is something that I am sure many Radiance fans feel in turn about PK himself. No judgement there.

But that's personal, so I'm not going to get into it. Just putting a note of it here because it does very much influence how I write her.

The Radiance is someone who is, at her core, very very lonely, and is also fundamentally afraid of being lonely. She is Grimm's twin in my headcanon (or, as much as one can be a twin when you were both divinely spawned from the same event), but Grimm is also her opposite, and so he never really did much other than highlight how deeply different she was from the only ever person that she knew. They were spawned in a place outside of Hallownest, in the creation of the Dream Realm where there was nothing around them but other hungry Higher Beings grasping for power, and that in turn did little other than prove to her that the whole world was against her and that the only way that she could persist was to eliminate all threats to herself before they had a chance to attack her first (Grimm, on the other hand, was fascinated by death and the play of power among power-hungry gods, and was much more inclined to observe until they clearly became a threat to him, ao that he could learn from them first. This difference is something that lead to the schism between the realms).

She is an extremely emotional person, acting on raw passion before all else- but that's because being rawly emotional never let her down in the past. How could it, when her fury burned with the force of a thousand stars, and incinerated all that dared threaten her? And how could she be anything but furious, when she had nothing but proof that the whole world conspired against her, and it was her burning rage that beat back the darkness of the cold, unfeeling Void, the one thing that could destroy her and her sibling? She was not always angry- more often than not, she was lonely, wanting nothing more than something to care for and protect- but anger served her well and so it became her first line of defense against anything that threatened her, and she was always right because nothing bad had ever come of her in the past.

(This is because she killed most things that she feared before they had a chance to move against her. The utter destruction of the Void Civilization was one such occurrence, happening after she had settled in Hallownest, created the moths, and deemed those who worshiped the dark below as a threat to both her and her newborn children.) I also believe that the Moths were created just before or right after the schism between her and Grimm, her barely-younger brother; because if he would not listen to her and allow her to care for him and be her family, then she would simply make one of her own, a family that she could dote on and adore and had no choice but to love her. And while she very much drove that schism, it was still a betrayal that stung her to the very core. He was her brother! He was supposed to agree with her, to love her and listen to her! She only ever tried to protect him, so what does it mean for him to defy her? That he doesn't actually love her after all, and that if she truly desires a family of her own, she must make it herself. One that will actually love her. One that will not defy her.

So, to recap: the Radiance is a fundamentally lonely person. But she is also fundamentally a very, very fearful person, to the point of overwhelming paranoia. And she grew up in an environment where this paranoia was not only unchecked, but encouraged.

This is what lead to her overcontrolling nature- because when she was able to control everything, she was able to see all of the problems before they became too hard to control, and thus eliminate them from the very start. I headcanon that the bugs of Hallownest had no free will under her control, but it wasn't the same as the malicious infection that we see in-game; it was genuinely because she cared, to the point where she had to look through a thousand eyes and ten thousand minds in order to nurture her kingdom the way she thought was best. She didn't kill all of the Void Civilization- the beetles persisted, as we saw- but she had to control them anyways, to wipe their minds of what she did and to prevent dissent. The Moths had a level of freedom that the others did not, but this was only because she created them and placed them first before all other bugs, and so thought that they would never have a reason to dissent against her. Why care for freedom when you can have security, after all? She never once in a million years thought that they would betray her for the Pale King, because she never once in a million years ever thought that anyone could ever want something like freedom in exchange for an uncertain, self-made future. It's too risky, too dangerous. Too lonely.

(This is also why I headcanon that the moth civilization collapsed after they abandoned Radi- they had been coddled for so long that they had no notion of independence, and thus could not survive on their own in a civilization that made itself with free will. This absolutely does not excuse PK of potentially being involved in their downfall, because I do think he played a huge part in it, but it does account for their diminishing numbers without any indication of physical genocide. I've seen some think that they were hit the first and the hardest by the Infection but I don't believe that Radi, even with her vengeful qualities, would have done that-or if she did, then Seer made no mention of it, likely because of her tribe's guilt about bringing back the Radiance even if it isn't their fault.)

(Part of this headcanon also ties into another hc I have about Radi, which was that she was very involved in her rule and would answer to almost every prayer- including ones that involved illness or injury. If you prayed for the sickness to go away, then she would answer the call and abolish it. The Moths got first treatment, because they as her children knew exactly how to call her, but this also meant that when they switched to PK's rule where he advocated for independence and self-sufficiency based on problem solving, they suffered far more than the others who had to reply on learning their own medical care when Radi was too busy to hear their prayers)

That's not to say that Radiance was a bad ruler by any means, but we do know that she and PK are opposites, and we have records of how distant he was from his civilization, which indicates that Radiance was deeply involved by contrast- likely suffocatingly so. That's part of why I love to play with her and Grimm being siblings, to be honest, because he acts as a sort of neutral zone between the Pale King's style of ruling (by almost zero personal involvement) compared to the Radiance's obsessive control- he holds power over those under his command, but he also relinquishes that power when they fight back, and makes the break from the trope relatively stressless by wiping their memories and leaving them with a defensive charm (if Carefree Melody is any indicator). Likely this is because Grimm is a scavenger-god who has seen how many a kingdom has fallen to ruin, but I can also imagine how an exposure to the Radiance would have encouraged him to give his people more freedom of will while also continuing to engage with them at all, which the Pale King didn't do. But that's a Grimm tangent right there- the point is that I do believe the Radiance did everything out of a love for her people.

The problem is just that emotions are her fatal flaw, and when they don't suffocate, they burn. We know that she isn't just pure emotion made manifest- she's an insidious manipulator, and quite skilled at it, too. She didn't win over the Traitor Lord or break the minds of the bugs of Hallownest through sheer force alone (though I'm sure she had to in some cases...like the Hollow Knight). But everytime she makes a bad decision, it's because her emotions got the best of her. She is the inverse to the Pale King, whose fatal flaw was that his logic blinded him to the emotions he felt towards his children, and to realizing the Vessel Plan was doomed until it is far too late. She got herself to where she was by blazing forth in a fit of fury, and turning the hurricane of her betrayal into a punishment that the entirety of Hallownest got caught up in, whether they were innocent or not. She wormed her way into the minds of those who listened to her and brutally slaughtered the rest. She might have had some justification at first, when she was clawing desperately out of the dark of near-death, but that justification was snuffed out quick. Her anger is brutal, grotesque, vengeful, and all-encompassing. She hates you, the player character, Little Ghost, for what you represent and who you are, and she hunts you relentlessly, using the corpses of the friends and siblings she's killed to try to murder you. But it's not just self-defense: it's hatred. When Ghost challenges her in the Dream Realm, she didn't have to answer, but she did. Because she is fury incarnate, and she will not suffer the mockery of the void-tainted scion of her enemy.

She might have been a benevolent goddess once, but no longer. She's beautiful and majestic. She's also a genocidal monster. Her actions have justification, for they were self-defense and retribution for her betrayal- until she began to destroy the lives of innocents in her hunger for power. She's a complex character, a sympathetic one even, and is even more terrible for it.

So yeah, she scares me, even though I love her. But can you really blame me?

lemme know what you guys think! I love reading comments left on my work! :) I'm enjoying this mini-series, and it'll likely have 2 endings. One for Sebastian, and one for Garreth.

Disclaimer: You aren’t the MC from Hogwarts Legacy in this, and I’ll most likely refer to the MC as ‘MC’.

I have yet to play the game as a Gryffindor, so I'm using my knowledge of the books and movies to describe the inside of the common room. I don't know exactly how it looks in the games.

"Whatever it is, you can tell me." Garreth says gently, MC is sat across from Garreth, wringing their hands together. They look anxious, and Garreth knows that if he keeps pushing they will tell him what happened.

"I can't hurt Sebastian like that." They said finally and it took all of Garreth's strength not to roll his eyes. Why does everybody care about protecting Sallow so much? Is he the only one who cares about you?

"You haven't seen how he is with Y/N. He's controlling, and overbearing, gets jealous really easily. He won't even let her see me anymore. I don't want him to hurt her. Please...help me protect her." Garreth pushes, his eyes pleading with MC.

"I want to help Garreth I do, but this information...could seriously screw up his life if you decide to go blabbing it to the entire school." MC says decisively. Hearing that makes Garreth's stomach turn, what on Earth did Sallow do? What did he do with the very hands that have touched you? You're too good, too pure for him. He doesn't deserve you, he never has. Deep down Sallow knows that, which is why he's so hostile towards other men.

"I think Y/N should know the truth. How could she hope to build a life with a man she doesn't even know?" Garreth argues back, leaning forward so his elbows are resting on his knees. MC bites their lip, and Garreth can tell they're so close to telling him the truth.

"Sebastian is different now Garreth. Y/N is helping him, her love is saving him. If he looses her now, then he is lost as well."

"So you're fine with lying to her? Keeping secrets from her? She's never let anybody down, is always there when you need her. I want to be there for her, but you and Ominis care more about Sallow than anybody else." Garreth is frustrated now, leaning back on the bench he's sat on with his arms crossed tightly over his chest.

"...If she finds out about what Sebastian did...then she might never speak to him again." MC's voice is quiet, their eyes downcast. He can see their resolve breaking, he's wearing them down. They're going to tell him the truth, he won't stop until they do.

"Let her decide that...instead of making these choices for her. She wants to spend her life with him...and there are far too many skeletons in his closet." Garreth says softly, MC's gaze lifting to meet his.

"Garreth...I trust you alright? I trust that you'll tell Y/N and nobody else. If this gets out, it's not only Sebastian's reputation that will get trashed but anybody close to him will be put under fire as well. If this gets out...you'll hurt her more than anybody else." MC says, their face suddenly getting very serious. It makes anxiety rise in Garreth's chest.

"I won't tell anyone else, you have my word." And Garreth really does mean that. As much as he hates Sallow and would love to tarnish is reputation, he could never do the same to you.

"Okay...during 5th Year Sebastian began to...well-" MC took a deep breath, almost as if saying the words were too difficult. They glance around them before moving to sit next to Garreth on the bench.

"He began to explore the Dark Arts- to save Anne. He taught himself the Unforgivable Curses...all of them." MC whispered lowly and Garreth's eyes widened. Sallow knows the curses? His heart falls into his stomach, this was clearly worse than he was anticipating. You're in love with a very dangerous man.

"He...I mean it was just an accident! He- He didn't mean to do it, he just got carried away." MC began to stammer, tears burning in their eyes as they recall a memory that clearly brings them pain.

"What? He didn't mean to do what?" Garreth pushes, he's so close to figuring out why MC and Ominis keep protecting Sebastian.

"Sebastian...he accidentally killed somebody during 5th Year. With the Killing Curse. He hasn't used the curses since and hasn't touched the Dark Arts since he began dating Y/N...but that's why he's different. Why he emerged from 5th Year a completely different person." MC finally whispered, and the first tear fell. They quickly wiped it away and turned their eyes to Garreth's stunned expression. Sallow is a murderer. That's worse than anything Garreth thought MC was going to say.

"Was it an accident? You have to mean the curses when you cast them. That's no accident." Garreth snaps, his jaw locked. You're dating a murderer. A murderer who as likely touched your skin, and seen the beauty of your naked body. It makes Garreth sick, you don't know who Sallow is- not really.

"Y/N has to know what he's done." Garreth says firmly, standing from the bench and setting off to find you.

"Garreth! Please just try to reconsider- I don't want Sebastian to do something he regrets." MC says before Garreth can walk away.

"And I don't want to wake up one morning and discover Y/N is dead because her and Sallow had a disagreement. If something happens to her, and I could have stopped it, I'd never forgive myself." Garreth fires back, turning and walking away before MC can say anything else.

All MC can think as they watch Garreth walk away is what have I done?

You had been avoiding Garreth, ever since that night in the Library. You're lucky Sebastian had been so forgiving, that he'd only been angry with Garreth and not you. You missed Garreth, you'd be lying to yourself if you said you didn't. He was your closest friend, your best friend and you two had been attached to each other since you first met him at the Train Station in Hogsmeade. His unruly mess of curly red locks and freckles peppered over his face like constellations drew you in, his playful nature and knack for trouble made you want to know him. You admire how deeply he cares for his siblings, how he never brags about being a Pureblood, he's good and kind to everybody. You missed him, and you know it would crush Sebastian to know you feel this way.

You don't know why. You love Sebastian, you tell him that every single day. You wished you knew why he was so afraid all the time, why he was so paranoid. Eventually you hope that you can coax him to open up to you, there are secrets he hides from you. Maybe he's just protecting you, maybe he's protecting himself. You try not to think about it too much, lest you start questioning everything he's ever said or done. You doodle in your notebook, sitting in the grass and enjoying the warm breeze. You're watching Imelda fly around, practicing for Quidditch.

"Y/N, there you are." You hear Garreth say, and you look up at him with a smile. He looks out of breath, like he ran to get here.

"Hi Garreth, have you been looking for me?" You ask, scooching over on your blanket to make room for him to sit next to you. He doesn't sit, in fact he looks anxious. It makes you anxious too.

"What's wrong?" You ask instantly, standing up from your blanket.

"Remember when you told me that you're worried Sallow is hiding something from you? I found out what it is he's hiding." Garreth asked and the solemn look on his face, the pity in his eyes...it makes your heart squeeze uncomfortably. Makes your insides twist and turn.

"Please tell me." You beg quietly, and you can only hope it isn't as bad as Garreth clearly thinks it is.

"Sebastian! Seb- I've made a mistake. I'm sorry I shouldn't have opened my mouth but I did and now-"

"What are you talking about?" Sebastian interrupts MC's rambling. He was sat in the common room, which was mostly deserted as the other Slytherin students were attending lessons. Sebastian didn't feel the need to show up for Defense Against the Dark Arts anymore. He knows how to protect himself, and he isn't afraid of the Dark Arts anyway.

"G-Garreth, he was asking questions. Saying Y/N deserves the truth! He...well I-"

"What? You what?" Sebastian rose to his feet, his entire body beginning to tremble. Silently begging that MC didn't tell Garreth what he fears they did.

"I told him. About 5th Year." They say finally, and the venom in Sebastian's eyes actually scares them a bit.

"Shit! Where's Y/N? I have to find her before he does." Sebastian snaps, remembering you mention last night that you were hanging out with Imelda today. You're likely camped out on the grounds somewhere then, Imelda is probably on her broom.

"Sebastian I'm sorry-"

"I don't fucking care. You're dead to me." Sebastian seethes, darkness in his eyes as he gives MC one last look before darting up the stairs to exit their common room. MC sinks onto the couch, hands in their hair as tears stream down their cheeks. What have they done?

Sebastian has never ran faster in his life, dodging students and throwing open doors to try and get to you before Garreth does. He can't lose you, he can't. If Garreth tells you the truth, Sebastian will lose you forever. The thought makes hatred and anger swirl around in his chest, pushing him closer and closer to becoming the person he's tried so hard to leave behind. His heart is pounding in his chest as he pushes through the main doors to the castle grounds. His eyes scan the faces he sees frantically before they finally land on you and when they do...his heart stops. Garreth found you first, and there are tears in your eyes.

"My love...can we talk for a moment?" Sebastian tries, he can still fix this. He can still find a way to explain this to you, tell you it was self defense. Which technically it was. Solomon attacked first, MC and Sebastian were merely defending themselves. Your body is trembling, your back is to him. You're facing Garreth, who has nothing but hatred in his gaze when he looks at Sebastian. Sebastian grits his teeth, his palms itching to beat into Garreth until he stops breathing. Garreth is taking you away from him, stealing you from Sebastian.

"Sweetheart please, just let me explain-"

Slap!

Your palm makes contact with his cheek firmly, tears flowing freely down your cheeks. At first you weren't sure about what Garreth was saying, but the more he explained what he learned...the more you believed him. Everything began to make sense, Sebastian's paranoia. Why he was so worried about who you were with, his possessiveness. Sebastian barreling through the doors frantically was the final confirmation that Garreth has been right about Sebastian all along. You wished you listened to Garreth, because now you- you love Sebastian. You love him so much, and this is worse than any other pain you've ever had to experience. When Sebastian looks back at you, there is desperation in his eyes and sadness. So much sadness.

"I never want to see you again. I-I hate you!" You cry, though you don't mean it. You could never hate him, not even if you should. You want to, right now you're so angry and you want to hate him. But you love him too much. Sebastian's eyes mist at your words, you don't hate him. You can't, he knows it's not true. He hopes it's not true. That this is just some nightmare he's going to wake up from.

"Dove, please you don't mean that. Just l-let me explain. You don't know everything-" Sebastian is begging, damn near close to dropping to his knees before you.

"Because you never told me! I don't want to speak to you ever again. Leave me alone!" You cry, sobs wracking through your body as you turn to press yourself against Garreth's chest. You miss the prideful smile he shoots at Sebastian over your head, his way of saying 'I won'. Sebastian could kill him right here and not feel a single ounce of guilt. Garreth wraps his arms around you, holding your trembling body close to his. You nuzzle against him, his warmth soothing the sadness in your heart.

"Garreth please take me away from here...I can't be near him anymore." You beg, feeling Garreth wrap his arm around your shoulder to hold you close to his side- the way Sebastian used to. Sebastian doesn't even know how to describe how he's feeling. His heart has just been ripped from his chest, by that snake Garreth. Sebastian resists the urge to torture him with Crucio, or perhaps make him torture himself with Imperio. Avada Kedavra is too quick for Garreth, too painless. Sebastian wants him to hurt the way he's made you and Sebastian hurt. You two were happy, and Sebastian would have told you what happened when he felt ready. Garreth never gave him the chance, he's so in love with you that he'll break your heart just to ensure that it's his.

And he says Sebastian is selfish.

You haven't stopped crying since Garreth took you inside from the courtyard. You held onto Garreth tightly, your fingers curling around his robes as he walked you two inside. He needed to take you somewhere safe, somewhere away from Sallow. He could feel your body shaking through the tears and while he hates that he had to hurt you, he feels better knowing that you know the truth. That you know what kind of person Sallow really is, hearing you say you hated him gives Garreth hope that you'll never take him back again.

"Gonna take you to my common room, okay?" Garreth whispers and you can only nod, pressing yourself against him as the tears continue to fall. Garreth has snuck you into his common room before, and the two of you have been caught by the Fat Lady as well. But luckily, everybody, including the portraits, love you. So by now she usually allows you entry if you're with Garreth, and if he begs first. You keep yourself pressed against him and he tries not to feel happy about it. Your heart has just been broken very badly by Sallow, but your sadness has allowed you to drop your defenses. Allowed you to let the feelings you have for Garreth surface.

Once the two of you arrive at the entrance to the common room, Garreth says the weekly password but she merely raises an eyebrow at you.

"C'mon please? Look at her, she needs me." Garreth pleads, and the Fat Lady is unfazed. Garreth groans in annoyance, but he reluctantly releases you. He knows what she's waiting for and so he drops to his knees, putting his hands together.

"Please?" He's groveling, and seeing the irritation on his face makes you giggle through the tears. Hearing the sound of your laughter behind him makes this whole ordeal worth it. The Fat Lady smiles before swinging open and allowing you to enter as well.

"She's just trying to humiliate me." Garreth insists with a huff, reaching to take you in his arms once more.

"You do that all on your own Garreth." You say weakly, a watery smile on your face as Garreth leads you to the plush red couch placed in front of the fireplace.

"You know I didn't do this to hurt you right? I wanted to help I promise." Garreth says softly and you lean against his side, your head resting on his shoulder as you take his hand.

"I know, you're the only one who's ever looked out for me. Thank you Garreth." You whisper, feeling safe and at ease here with him. He carefully wraps an arm around you, pulling your head against his chest. You cuddle against him, feeling your chest warm when he presses a soft kiss to your head. You and Garreth have always sort of blurred the line between friends and more, though you never fully took that step over it. Tears burn in your eyes again when you think of Sebastian, his smile, his laugh. The way he held you, the way he made you feel a few days ago when he took you to the Undercroft. You gave yourself to him, all of you. He has every piece of you, your heart, right this second. You don't know if you can ever stop loving him.

"Garreth..." You whisper, fresh tears falling from your eyes.

"Hm?" He hums, rubbing a soothing hand up and down your arm.

"I...I slept with Sebastian. A few days ago. I didn't know what he had done...oh how am I ever supposed to let him go?" You cry, burying your face in his neck. Garreth wraps both arms around you, his heart splintering at your confession. So Sallow did get to touch you, get to see your bare skin. Get to know how you feel, how you sound when you...Garreth couldn't even bear the thought. He feels jealousy flaring hot in his chest again.

"He doesn't deserve you, he never has. Give it time, your broken heart will heal." Garreth reassures you softly. You close your eyes are more tears cascade down your cheeks. You know they say time can heal all, but you doubt it could heal this. You felt so connected to Sebastian that day, like you two had become one. How are you gonna live without him? Your heart is so broken you don't know how to feel. You sit back, looking into Garreth's eyes and feeling warmth bloom in your chest again. Maybe Garreth is who you were always meant to be with. Maybe you simply fell prey to Sebastian's wit, charm, and good looks. Maybe your heart has always been destined for another.

Before you can think about what you're doing, you lean forward to press your lips against Garreth's. His hands find your hips as you kiss him fervently, your fingers curling around his robes. Garreth feels like he's in heaven, you're here pressing your body against his, your lips sliding against his. But he comes to his senses far too soon, and pulls away.

"What's wrong?" Your voice is small, you feel embarrassed. Maybe you read the situation wrong, maybe you were wrong about his feelings. It seemed like he cared about you...maybe he didn't. You turn away from him, cheeks hot.

"Hey hey, don't do that. Come here." Garreth says, seeing you retreating from him. His arms pull you back to him, his hands cupping your cheeks to make you look at him.

"I want to sweetheart, I just want to make sure your heart heals before we do anything, okay? It's too soon since what happened with Sallow, your heart is still broken." Garreth explains softly, he knows that right now you're searching for comfort wherever you can find it. If you two are going to be more than friends, he doesn't want it to be some rebound for you. He wants to do it right, take you on dates, help you fall in love again. You know he's right, your heart still yearns for Sebastian. But it also yearns for Garreth, it always has a little. Maybe that's why Sebastian didn't like him.

"I'll wait for you, no matter how long it takes. I'll always be right here, waiting for you." Garreth whispers as you lower your head into his lap. You feel drowsiness taking over, your eyes struggling to stay open. Garreth cards his fingers through your hair, gently massaging your scalp as you finally fall asleep. He smiles, lips tingling and blood pumping where it shouldn't be.

He finally has you.

Mention of riize made me want to pick your brain on the current state of kpop. I find the longevity of the 3rd gen boy group popularity fascinating, given how things were for the generations previous. What do you think might be behind the dearth of 4th gen bg kpop musics resonating with the korean public?

I don't live in korea, so I can't comment on the lived realities of music consumption in the country. Given your experiences and music expertise, I'd love to hear your thoughts! My understanding is that 4th gen bg music was not an easy listening experience and the public was turned off by the burning sun scandal??

And the specific reasons why are linked to a couple other factors.

BTS is still pretty much a wall, even for 5th gen groups. K-pop generations typically last about 7 years, both tied to contracts and the typical life cycle of previous star idols at their peaks. For example, GDragon / BigBang was very popular from 2012 to 2018, for Girls Generation their peak years were 2009 to 2015. Both groups are active till today but even during their peaks, in 2015 and 2018, BTS was out charting both groups.

BTS is ~2 years into their hiatus and halfway through completing their military service and yet, nobody is anywhere near their critical acclaim and charting performance. Like, nowhere in the vicinity.

Like I keep saying, the biggest determinant for BTS’s success is their music. We know K-pop or ‘idol music’ in general is a somewhat niche space in Korea (Korea has its regular pop singers like Gaho, Junny, or Jimmy Brown who certainly aren’t traditional k-pop), but one reason BTS has had the widest appeal to the Korean gp is the quality of their music and lyrics. This is something I’ve talked about before so I won’t go into it lol, but on that note, it brings me to one of the factors I said was linked above.

That factor is song choice. A lot of 4th gen groups have never once not snorted the EDM garbage. You know the ones, the groups who have two hammers: dubstep and trap (EDM), and who see everything as a nail. And that’s before we get into the frankly atrocious writing. Some songs are great to jam out to mindlessly in the gym or the club, but there’s no real substance to it. In my opinion. I also think songs like that have limited (obvious) appeal for the Korean public (with time and exposure therapy they’ll learn to tolerate it).

I think it’s been clear for a long time that most 4th gen boy groups have had to rely on other tools besides music to build up their fanbases. But those kinds of tools result in an increase in dedicated fan girls, not gp support which is what BTS and most girl groups enjoy. And again, a big reason for that is song choice.

Which is why 5th gen boy groups are doing more actual consumable music (thank you NewJeans), groups like Riize, ZB1, TWS, and BOYNEXTDOOR, are making waves and charting higher than Stray Kids or Ateez ever have.

The one leg-up those 4th boy groups have though, is their performance credibility and experience. And that’s what’s going to lead to the resurgence of 4th gen boy groups this year. I actually expect 2024 to be the best year ever for 4th gen boy groups, a modest reversal to the trend so far of the girl groups far outperforming the boys. NewJeans will dwarf everyone else, but overall boy groups in 4th gen will close the gap compared to their peers, in 2024. Ateez and Enhypen (performance juggernauts), Stray Kids and TXT (solid soundscape), The Boyz and P1Harmony (for the really cool kids) will be groups to watch for.

This year is critical for most boy groups because it’s their last chance to gain significant ground with k-pop fan girls (including ARMYs), before BTS comes back.

Because once BTS returns, that wall goes back up reinforced and mutated… it’s going to be so crazy lol.

WELCOME TO OBX WRITING WEEK!

September 4th-10th, 2023

I decided to start this after noticing a lack of updates in the OBX tags. Since the writers and actors are currently on strike, we are in a content drought so I am hoping this can spark some more buzz around the show and beloved characters! Inspired by @jiaraweek.

GUIDELINES

Anyone who writes can participate! It doesn’t matter if you’re new, don’t think you have enough followers, or if your account isn’t OBX centric.

Each day will have a prompt and suggested character to write for. You do NOT have to write for this character if you are not comfortable writing for them! (Please try to stick to the prompt if you decide to write for someone else instead, though).

I am releasing the prompts EARLY down below so writers can plan ahead, please do not post before September 4th. However, feel free to post a teaser if you'd like.

These do not have to be full-length fics. Oneshots, drabbles, blurbs, and even social media AUs are appreciated as well!

Don’t worry if you miss a day or have to post twice to make up for it. You can opt-in and out at any point of the week.

The goal is just to generate more content in the tags, so have fun! :)

PROMPTS

day 1: monday september 4th - AU w/ JJ Maybank

starting off strong, let’s move away from the outer banks for a second. write a drabble or fic where JJ and y/n are in a different universe. maybe they have odd jobs or they’re vampires, make it as crazy or normal as you want!

day 2: tuesday september 5th - the very first night w/ John B.

forget an established relationship, how did y/n and JB meet? was it a meet cute or did they have an enemies to lovers arc? childhood best friends that fell in love through treasure hunting? write a drabble or fic that describes the very first time JB and y/n met.

day 3: wednesday september 6th - reluctant friends to lovers w/ Sarah Cameron

sarah and y/n end up together somewhere someplace. maybe one of them holds a grudge against the other. perhaps it’s a life or death situation and they need to work together. write a drabble or fic in which sarah and y/n unexpectedly grow close and become more than just friends.

day 4: thursday september 7th - second chance w/ Rafe Cameron

give me angst. give me fluff. give me butterflies. give me betty by taylor swift. write a drabble or fic in which either y/n or rafe gives the other person a second chance at love. because we all deserve it.

day 5: friday september 8th - how you get the girl w/ Kiara Carrera

write a drabble or fic where either kiara or y/n are yearning for the other. show us how they’re planning to ask out the other person, the pining and waiting, make it as slow or fast burn as you’d like.

day 6: saturday september 9th - childhood friends to lovers w/ Pope Heyward

arguably my favorite trope. think ‘you are in love’ by taylor swift. you can either write about the present day or give us a flashback scene from their childhood! write a drabble or fic in which y/n and pope grew up together and one day or over time realize they are in love.

day 7: sunday september 10th - 5+1 w/ your choice!

the tried and true format. five times your character was jealous and the one time y/n was. five times your character almost asks y/n out and the one time they did. this is not limited to fluff either, it can be angsty too if that’s your thing. it also doesn’t have to be 5, it can be less!
