Do you think Rose Tyler went through a degree of parentification with her mother?
I'm not calling Jackie a bad mother. She clearly loves Rose a TON and did her very best in difficult circumstances. She was a young woman suddenly a widow having to look after a child all on her own in the midst of her grief. Grief that she clearly hasn't gotten over as she attempts to cover over it with lines of new men and a blur of personal, televised, and printed gossip
But it is Rose who was supporting the household in the first episode we see her. Rose who has to find a job once it's been literally destroyed around her. As far as I remember it's never even considered that Jackie would take on Roses load for a bit.
Jackie likely never got a reprieve after Pete died before she was thrown straight into single motherhood, no matter how overwhelming it must have been. This is likely why she has no clue how to offer Rose a rest to get over what was a likely traumatic event. she even describes it as such on the phone (the fact that Rose is not actually in fact going through symptoms of trauma is I feel pretty irrelevant to this, though it contributes to the feeling of Roses mental state being brushed off)
Jackie's dislike for Roses 'airs and graces' from working a high end shop, the negative tone towards how the doctor changed her, even for the better, I think it all stems from the fear of Rose leaving. If Rose becomes better than what she can offer and leaves, she takes Jackie's entire world. The last reflection of Pete, a potential and invaluable source of income, and most of all simply the person she loves and cares for most. She'd have nothing but a council estate flat, friends to gossip with, media to consume, and bills to pay.
My thoughts on all this were triggered by a gif set I saw where Rose on new year's tells her mother something along the lines of 'don't stay out too late' and Jackie's reply is 'you try and stop me'. In most situations this would be the other way round. It should not be the daughter half jokingly cautioning the mother about a night out. The ease and familiarity of the exchange makes me think that this would not have been the first occurrence of this. This isn't to say that mothers shouldn't have proper nights out, my own does, but the daughter should not be the one worrying if they are being safe.
And that episode with the absorbalof (I think that's how it's spelled) where Rose comes out at the end enraged on her mother's behalf. It is completely understandable, and I would probably be EXACTLY the same, but in the context of everything else I'm thinking about, it's a bit too fitting that it is Rose coming to Jackie's defence after a bad not-quite boyfriend.
The woman who sat with Pete as he died, who Jackie uses as a single piece of comfort to pass on to her daughter? That's also Rose.
And the alternate dimension is really more Jackie's happy ending than Roses, though they both get an alternative version of the man of their dreams. But Rose loses a big part of why she chose to leave home over and over. Her monologue at the chippy pre- bad wolf shows that, although the doctor is an appeal on his own, the life of going out there and seeing the universe, making a change, is something that the loss of gets under her skin like a restless itch. And she didn't get a choice, she had to learn to deal with it.
Jackie loses nothing. It's all gain for her. She has her daughter, who she cares about most in the world, her husband, who seems more devoted and successful than he ever was in her reality, and she has the money and big house that she never got previously. She never has to learn to work through her grief without covering it, it is undone for her (though I'm sure the ghost of the 'real' Pete will still linger in her mind)
Again I want to reiterate that Jackie is NOT a bad or neglectful mother. She is incredibly and realistically concerned with Roses safety (in a way that I've only really seen RTD write). But she is a woman who has her own issues to tackle and very few resources with which to do so. Rose would have had to grow up navigating around that.

Summary: Nikolai and y/n have been friends and nothing more. But what happens, when the feelings between them change? Part ll of Is it chill that you’re in my head?

Author’s Note: After WEEKS I finally present part two. Constructive criticism is always appreciated since this is the first thing I've posted online.
Nikolai regretted leaving you standing at the lake within five minutes, but he found it quite stupid to go back now. So, he continued his walk towards his room. His mind couldn’t decide what to think about. It was like watching a tennis match between you in that dress and that stupid guy that had asked you out and whether you said yes or no.
He was such an idiot. He should’ve done something to stop that Inferni from asking you out. Nikolai didn’t trust that guy and besides, his best friend deserved something better. Like a king maybe. There was a slight possibility that Tamar had been right and he did have feelings for y/n. After brooding for what seemed to be another hour, he decided to seek you out.
You hadn’t been on any dates for quite a while. Trying to help your new king, you spent most of your time with Nikolai, not having a lot of time for your love life. The prospect of going on a date filled you with anticipation, though your thoughts always swayed back to a certain blond. The way he looked today seemed to be glued to the inside of your brain. Your mind kept switching between thinking about his arms, his back and his abs. God you felt like your head was going to explode with how red your cheeks were. Genya, whom you had asked to help you get ready, misinterpreted your more than noticeable blush.
“The way you’re looking right now, this guy has to be the most gorgeous man you’ve ever seen.”
“What? No, I wasn’t thinking about… Actually, I was thinking about the way Nikolai acted today. It was a little confusing.”
Genya had a huge smirk plastered on her face.
“You’re about to go on a date with someone, and everything you can think about is Nikolai?”
“Don’t say it like that.”
Genya’s smirk grew even more, if possible.
“Oh, come on, everyone knows how infatuated you are with each other.”
“He’s not infatuated with me, we are friends and nothing more.”
“Y/n darling I hate to break it to you, but you can be as oblivious as a goose.”
“A goose?”
“Oh, you know what I mean. Did you know that some of us have bets going on about who will confess their feelings first.”
“Well, that’s lovely. You’re telling me my love life is so pathetic you guys are betting on it?”
You were growing a little impatient with Genya. First, she was trying to tell you that Nikolai was in love with you, which was impossible, right? Yes, he was often flirting with you, but that was just how your friendship worked. Plus, he was king and couldn’t be in a relationship with a heartrender. While Grisha were generally more accepted in Ravka than for example in Fjerda, a Grisha could never sit on the Throne. Why were you even thinking about this? Genya had really gotten into your head. Nikolai wasn’t in love with you, end of discussion.
“Either way, I have to be on my way now or I’ll be late to my date with Dmitri.”
“Dmitri? He’s a nice guy. Although I suppose a certain king is a little more appealing to you, considering how hard you were staring at him the second he took off his shirt.”
“You were at the lake today?”
Genya snickered. “Oh, yes. Though I could have probably seen your staring from a mile away.”
“Will you stop it? You’ve obviously been in the workshops with David too often and lost your mind.”
“If that makes you happy. Have fun on your date.”
Dmitri and you had a lot of fun and tons of things to talk about, and the hours between afternoon and evening had become blurry by the time the two of you decided to eat dinner together. Walking side by side, his hand occasionally brushing yours, you couldn’t help but think about how nice this felt. Even though you had banished Nikolai from your mind during the date, thoughts of him were in the back of your head, waiting to jump back into the front of your mind. But you wouldn’t think of him. Not when you were having such a great time with Dmitri. After a dinner with lots of laughter and jokes, Dmitri offered to bring you back to your room.
“So, I had a great time today.” you tentatively began.
“Yes! Me too. I’d like to go out with you again if you’re up for it.” He seemed happy that you had brought the topic up. Before you could open the door to your room, he quickly took your hand and placed a chaste kiss on the top of your hand.
“Goodnight.”
He was gone before you could reply. Cheeks still a little rosy from his kiss, you went into your room and closed the door behind you.
"How was your date?"
"Saints! Nikolai what are you doing here?"
"Waiting for you obviously. So, how was your date?"
Nikolai was laying on your bed as if it was his. Well, since he was the king, it probably did belong to him. He looked at you expectantly, waiting for you to answer his question.
"It was ... nice"
He nodded slowly, as if in deep thought.
"So, what did you want to talk about?"
His eyes snapped up to yours as he started to make his way over to you. A grin was forming on his stupidly beautiful face.
"I wanted to talk about how freakishly handsome I am." You couldn't help the chuckle that escaped from your lips.
"I always knew you were vain but breaking into my bedroom to talk about your appearance seems like a new low to me."
By now he had reached you, standing close, leaning slightly towards you, so that your faces were only breaths apart. Both of your faces turned serious again, both breathing the same air.
"Y/n, when you agreed to going on a date with this guy I could only think of two things. How much I hated that guy and how stupid I was for letting him get to you first. I wanted to be the one to make you laugh. I wanted to be the one to take you out for dinner. If you don't feel the same -"
"Shut up" You breathed out before grabbing the kings collar and pulling his lips against yours. He immediately answered your kiss. Wrapping his arms around your waist while yours were tangled in his hair. When you both broke apart to catch your breath, Nikolai looked very happy with himself.
"Now lets get back to the reason I came in here." You raised your eyebrows in question.
"To talk about how freakishly handsome I am"
"Oh shut up" You said before pulling him in for another kiss. He smiled against your lips and you felt as if you were on top of the world.

Here's my Ao3 wrapped for 2023!
Although it's nowhere near as impressive as some people's, I'm really proud of my writing achievements this year, both on and off my Ao3 account. This is just for my own motivation, so I've collaged together a few different templates I've seen online. Feel free to use it for your own if you like!
Words written this year: 45,705 words published over six months! Now where was this motivation to write during my degrees...?
Works published this year: Five published works for Jujutsu Kaisen, four of which are complete.
Work I'm most proud of: Over the Threshold — for a million different reasons! I've never approached a work with this level of attention to themes and motifs before. I lose perspective sometimes, but it's very fulfilling to write, especially because the setting is personally important to me.
Work that readers enjoyed most: Rivers Crossed, Mountains Scaled — at least judging from kudos and bookmarks. That was a surprise to me considering it's only around a week old! However, the investment readers have shown in the comments on Over the Threshold means *everything* to me.
Fastest work to write: Dream a Little Dream — I wrote it over a few hours at work because of a prompt that captured my imagination. This is *wildly* fast for me!
Slowest work to write: I would say Over the Threshold because it's still a WIP, but let's go with Rivers Crossed, Mountains Scaled because it was in my drafts for six months before I did anything with it.
Number of WIPs I'm taking into 2024: Including Over the Threshold, I think 10 or 11? Most of them are part of a series about Megumi and Gojō's relationship that I've been working on for ages, and there are tons more half-baked ideas flying around that I hope I can flesh out eventually. I wish I was a faster writer!
Favourite character to write: Basic of me, but it's Gojō. No matter how much I write him or study his character, I still never know whether I'm getting it quite right. I find that really addictive!
Favourite line/passage I wrote this year: I feel spoilt for choice which is a pretty nice feeling to have about myself! I'm really proud of the celestial imagery in chapter five of Over the Threshold. It's woven throughout the whole chapter, but if I had to pick one passage, it would probably be this one:
It was simply the truth of the universe that some stars burned brighter than others, and Satoru’s was among the brightest. He shone so brilliantly that the rabble were forced to avert their eyes, bowing their heads in worship of his lonely light.
Suguru didn’t want to be part of the rabble. [...] If it was the price he had to pay for really seeing Satoru, Suguru would rather let his retinas burn than look away.
Honourable mention to this description from Dream a Little Dream:
Her eyes instantly found his — wide pools of endless blue in motion peering at her from across the room. He was silhouetted against the window frame, shōji pulled open to reveal the clear and colourless dawn that was breaking beyond. It was still too early for the sun to paint the sky in daubs of orange and rouge, but the monochrome world outside cast the Six Eyes into even sharper relief.

＂ DAAAAI-CHAN !＂ a bright & cheery call toward daisuke as she trots to catch up with him, always so warm & filled with energy even so early in the morning. once the distance was closed she moves to walk in front of him spinning on her heel before presenting from her schoolbag a little bundle wrapped in a cute cloth in red hues of which inside holds some homemade fudge & cookies. ＂ my dormmates & i made a ton of treats for all our pals for valentine's day so here is your share !＂
a grin before she plops the bundle within his hands with a sense of pride. her cooking was not something to bat an eye at after all ! each little piece of fudge was shaped into little hearts & stars, decorated with white or milk chocolate & even confetti ! the cookies as well all had little decors of various sorts. all from scratch made with love borne from minako's ever abundant wealth within her.
for a moment, however, her mirth is dropped & her voice low. reaching once more in her bag to procure a matching small bundle( one would note just as cute, though the cloth of which the confections within was a swirl of blue & purples. ) that she tosses over toward daisuke with much less enthusiasm. ＂ oh, right. this one is for him.＂ && within seconds after the second gift was passed over she's back to being all smiles, ＂ anyways i hope y'all enjoy ! happy valentine's day dai-chan !＂

' wow . she sure is lively , isn't she ? try as he might , he's never been a morning person . abrupt ( and deadly ! ) awakenings in tandem with his regular nocturnal excursions only made everything worse . the fatigue of a heist still weighs on him ; in the ache at his calves , or heavy on his shoulders , itching down the now empty space of his back . between trying to keep up with his homework and his family sending out one card after another to keep him occupied , he's been so busy , that valentines ---
' ah ... w-wait , it's today ?! ' already ?! the panic doesn't take long to reach his expression . his cheeks flare like he's been caught marching to school with no pants on , which , thankfully , even in a post-heist grog , he had at least managed to remember for himself . ' i mean --- w-wah , you guys did all that together ... ? ' and she was willing to bring even him something ?
there's a little longing , a strange blend of emotions --- for an instant he could have confessed that he never had even imagined that chocolates could have been made as a group , rather than a solitary , intimate endeavor wherein one person alone tried to make chocolates for others . daisuke can't help but wish that he could have gone with her and learned to make something more himself , but it was impossible , wasn't it ?
he might have been nothing more than an awkward stranger . he had his own isolating curse . moreover , besides the likes of his family , the artworks , himself and just a few others --- he wasn't sure that he even had enough friends to possibly hand out chocolates to .
nevertheless , minako's gift drops itself into his hands . ' this is ... ' even without any talent , he still had an eye . for skill and luxury , red irises shimmering the instant he peeks through the cloth . ' you made these , arisato-san ?! ' it's something that should have been obvious by now , but if anything , his vocal disbelief should have served as a compliment . ' they look amazing ! i've never seen anything like them --- '
... ah .
it's a second bag . ( uh oh . ) a purple one . ( oh --- oh no !! ) where minato's enthusiasm seems to shrivel up and die in an instant , daisuke's own speechless alarm and hidden , not-so-hidden anxieties elevate themselves into a pale stare . although a hand readily , instinctively snatches the tossed bundle out of the air without at all rattling or cracking its contents , he still really can't believe it ! it's just as shocking to be the recipient of two valentines gifts as it was to realize and acknowledge that minako had actually given something to --- to 'him' ?!
'his' face flashes in the boy's mind . it's one he desperately hopes his own wasn't already changing into as he balked and stared . ' the ... wuhhhh ? ' he doesn't really want to assume , but it's kind of obvious who it should have been for , right ?! but what was he supposed to say ?! what would anybody have said in this kind of situation ?! thank you so much ?! i'm sorry ?! actually , he's never even told her about being dark , so what exactly was this for ?!
' you --- i ... ! ' was it just because he was from azumano , and she decided it would have been nice ( huh ? ) to lend him something to throw onto the offering pile that every other student was practically foisting all sorts of chocolates and alluring gifts onto ? he clutches both of the bundles in his hands ; watches as minako waves and sparkles in the morning sunlight , no doubt ready to skip away to her next delivery . dark himself might have been sleeping , always a drowse in daylight hours , but even so ... ' uh , thank you , arisato-san ! i ... i'm sure he appreciates it ?! i mean , i'll do my best that he gets it ?! i mean , i really like what you've given me ! thank you ! thank you --- ! '

Book Katniss and Movie Katniss.
What key point or best qualities of Katniss' that lost in the movie adaptation?
What do you think about Jennifer Lawrence portrayal of Katniss?

In terms of which one is my favorite, I like them both. Although I think we definitely get more of Katniss in the books considering we get to read her thoughts and reasonings for everything she does which is lovely. I imagine them both the same since I watched the movies before I ever read the books, so as I read the books I was imagining movie Katniss.
I think the best qualities of Katniss that were lost in the movies were her thoughts. I enjoyed being able to read her inner dialogue, which would not have really been possible to put in the movie unless there was constant narration lol. I feel like movie Katniss and book Katniss are very similar. I liked Katniss's humor in the books though, and her love for Capitol food. I thought it was funny how she described each meal she ate in the first book with such great detail, and it made since that she did so considering she'd never had such flavorful, quality food. I also liked how in the books we got to read Katniss's thoughts when she had sympathy for the other tributes of the 74th Hunger Games. She realized the Capitol was the real evil, not the brainwashed children. And these realizations were so important to the story, and to the message of The Hunger Games. I find that due to our ability to see in her mind, Katniss was much more anti-establishment and anti-fascist in the books.
I really like Jennifer Lawrence's portrayal of Katniss, I struggle to imagine anyone else being Katniss. And I especially like her considering that Suzanne herself picked Jennifer, so she must have been very similar to how Suzanne imagined Katniss when she created her as a character. But, although I love Jennifer as Katniss, I also enjoy everyone's headcanons/fancasts of Katniss, especially the ones where she is a Native American woman! :) I think Jennifer made an awesome Katniss, even though there were some differences in the character that some people disliked, I think they were just fine. I've seen some people say Katniss should have been short, but I can't recall the books ever explicitly saying she was short, and even if they did, it was not a defining character trait for her. Also many people say Katniss should have been very skinny or gaunt, but unless they casted a very naturally skinny girl, it would not have been appropriate for them to force Jennifer to lose an unhealthy amount of weight (which, according to Jennifer, I think there was a casting director who tried to convince her to lose a ton of weight). I agree with Jennifer when she said it was best to keep movie Katniss at a more healthy weight so girls who look up to Katniss wouldn't want to lose weight to be super skinny like her. So I am fond of the decision to keep her looking more healthy, and I don't feel it is very unrealistic for Katniss's character. During the events of the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss was 16 and had been hunting for years so she had access to fresh meat which other District 12 citizens did not have-- she wasn't a starving 12 year old anymore. She also hunted daily, and for hours at a time. Access to quality protein and fat and hiking through the forest while hunting with a bow will make you gain some muscle. And, regardless, Jennifer was not super muscular at all so I am not sure why people make a big deal about that, her body type is incredibly "average".
But anyways, I love both movie and book Katniss, and I like Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss, but movies can't show the complexity of a character's thoughts and decisions the way books can. Hence why the books are generally considered better in most series.

Since I'm working on that vampire project I asked my favoritest customer in the world for vampire movie recommendations and she came back to me with 'Let The Right One In', citing it as the most perfect vampire movie ever not a single thing wrong with it and christ alive she really delivered.
It's one of those films that's so perfect I can't even think of much to say about it. It's so incredibly soft and filmed so beautifully. The captions I was using were translated wonderfully, as well. I felt that the voice of the characters really showed in little aspects of how their speech was written out. I've seen movies with very poorly translated captions so while it might seem like a given that they should be good it's just not something I can expect.
The effects were very well done although as usual I do feel that the scene with all the cats didn't mesh as well but given that it was made in 2008 and it can be difficult to cgi animals I'm not giving it a ton of flak for that. It's one of my usual peeves but I feel it more than makes up for that small detail with literally everything else up to and including every other effect utilized. My favorite was the change in Eli's eyes thought in general the blood and prop effects were phenomenal with the blood in particular being better than many movies of its kind that I've seen.
Like I said, it's the cinemetography is a standout. Nearly the whole movie is just shot after shot of the most perfect framing and shot length I've ever seen. Eli's eyes, the final interaction between Eli and her caretaker, the pool scene oh my goooood. Speaking of I love the final scene it's soso cute I couldn't believe how soft this movie could be despite it all. My horror bestie was not wrong this is the most perfect vampire movie I've ever seen <3

oooo good question lemme pull up my bookmarks. most of these are probably gonna be ones I've recced before just bc I don't read a ton of fics so my favorites usually stay the same for a long period of time. also, I'm just gonna put the favorites of mine that I specifically get writing style inspo from. I have a lot of other fics I adore that I just didn't really get a ton of writing inspo from that I'm not gonna include here.
maggot tongue by birdfeet - I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love eli's writing so goddamn much. they have some of the best crimeboys characterization I've ever seen in fics, and the way they write environments and atmosphere is so gritty and raw, it just scratches this specific part of my brain so perfectly, I read literally everything they write. maggot tongue is my fav fic of theirs though (at the moment, they have a wip going on rn that I helped them brainstorm and I know once it's done that's gonna be my new fav). maggot tongue just has fantastic characterization and such a gritty atmosphere, their descriptions make my skin crawl but in the best possible way. I really admire their word choice for descriptions, and their work is definitely something I've taken a lot of inspo from for my own writing
ritual purposes by thanotaphobia - again, i've talked about this fic before but I'm literally never gonna get over it. roxy writes so much amazing stuff, but there's just something about this fic that hits so hard for me. there's so many tiny details in it that just put me right at the archaelogical dig site the fic takes place at. I think my favorite part of roxy's writing here is the way they describe tiny physical interactions. there's one line in particular I always think of, and it's just this bit where phil has his hand resting on tommy's back, and his shirt is still warm from the sun he'd been standing in only minutes before. it's such a tiny line, but it's just so specific and I can think of exactly what that feels like—to have your hand on a child's back and feel the warmth soaking from their shirt into your hand. this fic is full of tiny moments like that that just make it so easy to place yourself in phil's shoes, and not to mention the subject matter is so interesting. I love when authors use really niche knowledge they have and make a fic on it.
His Curse of Binding by bari_astralis - ignore the fact that the link says orphan account, poor bari's ao3 account got fucked one day and all her fics from before got orphaned but she's the author of this. ANYWAY, his curse of binding was probably my first Favorite fic in this fandom. I read it while it was still ongoing, and I remember how excited I would get anytime it updated. I love so many of bari's works because she's an excellent author, but his curse of binding is always gonna hold a special place in my heart. bari has this really perfect instinct for how to balance humor and drama in a way that doesn't lean too far on either side. his curse of binding is one of the funniest fics I've ever read, but it also made me sob. although a lot of my fics don't have a ton of humorous moments in them, I really admire bari's ability to balance those two contrasting moods, and also how distinct her voices for all the characters are. love her stuff.
still life by meridies - if you haven't read any meri meridies fics... I'm so sorry for your loss but you are missing out. I don't actually read or talk about meri's fics a lot mostly because they often hit me so hard, it takes me a lot of time to process my thoughts on them. still life is probably the one that's impacted me the most, but so many of their fics are just fantastic, I highly recommend reading any of them. meri has this really distinct writing style where they don't over describe anything and somehow that says so much more than anything else they could do. they don't dive super deep into thought process a lot of the time and focus more on character actions, which lets the readers make their own interpretations about what the characters are thinking or feeling in any given moment, and it creates a really powerful effect. everything they write feels so raw and human, and while it's drastically different from my own writing style, I love keeping their writing in mind when thinking about ways I can switch up my own methods if I ever want to. just go read their stuff you won't regret it.

Ship-bingo: Raeda? LuzxWillow?
Raeda:
Raeda is so good. i love everything about it. i don't read fic about them just because i pretty much exclusively read fic about Hunter because There Are Things Wrong With Me but like, every so often i keep thinking that i should. (although i do also have a somewhat particular characterization of Raine that doesn't quite gel with a lot of the fan content i see, but since i don't actually seek it out, i can't speak to whether that's a broader trend or if i'm just coincidentally seeing stuff i don't quite vibe with.)
like god. it's SO good. the friends-to-lovers-to-exes of it. the way they reconnected years after the fact in their adulthood after living such massively different lives, and they didn't even have time to actually make anything of it or see how they fit together now that they've both grown and changed so much because they were both desperately fighting against a swiftly-approaching genocide.
the way Raine was just immediately down to do a double-murder-double-suicide with Eda. i love how absolutely ruthless Raine Whispers can be, they are a stone-cold motherfucker in many respects and i absolutely adore it. if anything, between the two of them it's Eda who's the sentimental one.
i really love how their highschool flashback meetcute showed us more of Raine's goblin bastard energy and how the two of them work really well together that way. they're both very chaotic people with very strong personal convictions. i think Eda has a very like, person-based morality, where it's about the people who she cares about, while Raine has a more ideology-focused morality, where it's about The Cause and The Goal, which can cause conflict but also can lead them to balancing each other out and shoring up each other's weak points.
the impression i've gotten from what i've seen (and i want to stress that there's a ton of Raine fanworks i just have not interacted with, so i am not trying to say this is a general pattern, it's just what i've seen) is that some people tend to play up Raine's uwu soft bean quotient, the anxiety and the gentleness and the warmth, but the most fascinating core of their character to me has always been that sense of ruthlessness and willingness to get their hands extremely dirty if they think it'll accomplish their goals. and it's such an interesting contrast with Eda, who comes across as very practical but is willing to throw all of that away for the sake of people she loves.
They Mean So Much To Me. also Raine is 100% the world's best most gently, warmly ruthless brat-tamer dom, you will never convince me otherwise. ALSO that bit in the finale where they rip Eda's arm off to save her life and then collapse into her lap to die is the most romantic shit i've ever seen, thank you Dana for my rights and life.
Luz/Willow:
Willuz? Luzillow?
this is a really cute idea! i don't think i've ever like, seen anything for it, but it definitely has potential. they could have had a super cute friends-to-lovers romance arc, and i can see them working very well together.
like it would mean a lot to Willow that Luz stood up for her against her bullies, and that Luz also understands what being excluded socially feels like. loser's club! and Willow can definitely exert a bit of a grounding, more realistic influence on Luz - she's a bit calmer and more level-headed, more prone to thinking things through, and that's something she can offer Luz as a friend or girlfriend.
(but then they also both have that self-sacrificing thing and that tendency to assume that if something goes wrong, they must be at fault, and it must be evidence of some kind of deep personal failing, which they could easily reinforce in each other...)
and also you know, Willow has that whole "if i don't think about it then it isn't a problem!" thing which Luz also very much has, so, like, there's potential for some really fun communication problems there! i think they could work it out, but they could also really end up getting twisted up in it and lost in their respective fantasy worlds and just not talking about stuff.
...and Willow/Luz/Amity is a fascinating potential ot3 here because like, Oh Boy. i very firmly feel like the whole thing between Amity and Willow has shades of Baby's First Lesbian Drama* and this would just absolutely crank it up to 11. the buried resentment. the yearning. the weird tangle of bizarre emotional stuff. the landmines Luz is going to step on without even realizing it. 10/10 tbh i'd love to see it.

a character that i used to love/like, but now do not:
I don't really have anything for this, or at least not that I can think of beyond like. Kaku from Galley-La, who seemed like a really chill dude until he wasn't lmfao. Maybe like. Usopp's gf from waaaaay way back in the beginning, though it's not even that I liked her and don't anymore and more that I just do not. Ever think about her lmfao. Usually my instincts aren't super wrong in this series, everyone I've loved I love still.
a ship that i used to love/like, but now do not:
Again I don't really have anything for this, its less that I liked a ship and don't anymore and more that I've cycled through things I liked earlier that just don't really have my attention now bc the story has been off of them for so long. Usopp and his East Blue GF are like this, I used to be pretty hardcore Nami/Vivi, and I still really love the pairing!!! but I haven't seen Vivi in like. 400ish episodes? and so my attention has sort of cycled off into more recent/immediate things.
my ultimate favorite character™:
At the end of the day it's Luffy, isn't it? No matter how dearly I love anyone else, my heart always comes back to the best boy, oh captain my captain, I'd literally sail into hell for him. I think there's just something so beautifully, tenderly, viciously human about him, no matter where the story takes him, and I can't give the top spot to anyone else. There are lots of facets and contexts to which love and interest can be attributed and in other contexts the list might look different, but in terms of overall, objective favorites? It's Luffy forever. <3
prettiest character:
Genuinely not sure how to choose between Ace and Sanji and Law for this one. There are TON of like really really gorgeous people in this series by like varying metrics of attractiveness, but these three are like. The prettiest people I've ever seen, like. Got me on the actual floor every day, they're just breathtaking.
my most hated character:
I've got a couple of different answers for this bc it feels like I need to. Blackbeard, for literally everything he's done. Garp, for not being able to summon enough fucking humanity to tell a 10 year old that it's okay for him to exist, and that he isn't guilty of the sins of his father. Doflamingo, although this one is complicated by how interesting and necessary to the story I feel he is (juxtaposed with Blackbeard, who is v necessary to the story but is a spineless little cowardly worm that I'd like to squish with my shoe. 0/10 not interesting also killing him with beams).
Squard. Whitebeard may have forgiven you but I fucking don't.

Let me start by saying I've never watched Legend of Korra. like, the most I've watched was any bending scenes/fights and all the Zuko and Toph clips (admittedly, I didn't watch any of the Katara clips because..well..honestly I didn't want to see her be so meek). But I've always felt kinda...bad for liking Mako since the few posts I did read made it seem like both Korra and Asami were better off without him and I didn't want to accidentally fall into the category of sympathising with a man who didn't treat women right. Even when I watched what few clips he was in -Mako seemed a little serious but not anything bad- I thought it was just because I didn't see enough of him to see why he was so bad for Korra and Asami.
And then I read your post on Mako and how he had to do anything and everything to take care of Bolin and my heart kinda broke. I don't know if this is right, but it kinda feels like Mako is being treated a bit like Katara's being treated. Like, they both fit the sibling-turned-parental-figure roles and some of the fandom seems like they can't accept that both are still teenagers who...well, still act like teenagers. seriously, I'm gonna be mad if I ever see another 'take' about how Katara is bad for acting more teenager than mother 😤. And the parallels between the non-con kisses that their respective Avatars gave them, with both Mako and Katara shouldering the blame (though in Katara's case it's more of a "she's supposed to like it! She's the Avatar's girl uwu") . It just rubs me the wrong way how neither of them get any slack for acting less than amazing when they both spent years carrying their trauma and shielding their siblings from that same hurt.
Sorry if this is bothering you or if it doesn't make sense; I'm just kinda fed up of seeing people side with the Avatar no matter what the situation was, especially when Korra and Aang were actually in the wrong *coughnon-conkisscough*

Honestly all of this makes a ton of sense, someone who's never seen the show and only has fandom's word to go on could be excused for thinking Mako's a fuckboy who was intentionally leading the girls on rather than a kid who'd been raising his baby brother alone on the streets since he was eight years old and maybe not the best at navigating personal relationships and didn't know how to deal with the fact that he had feelings for two incredible girls at the same time. That shit's hard to deal with even when you have parents and had a happy and comfortable life and are just in high school trying to get through the day, but you throw that in the mix with 'became a parent at eight years old' and 'struggled to get enough to feed his brother, nevermind himself, while they lived on the streets' and then everything that happened during the series, and it's like, cut this kid some slack maybe????
Also the comparisons with the way the fandom treats Katara are also spot on. Obviously in Katara's case there's also an added element of racialized misogyny, because she's a dark-skinned girl and the only dark-skinned girl in the main cast, so that gets added to the fact that she was also the gaang's 'mom friend' and you get fans unironically calling her a 'bitch' for -checks notes- getting reasonably upset after being pushed to her limit and losing her cool--but in Mako's case, he actually fills the same niche in the krew that Katara did in the gaang, and he gets a lot of the same treatment, which I think winds up coming at him from the opposite side of the fence so to speak. Because he's a boy, he automatically gets the blame for anything that goes wrong with the love triangle--up to and including the avatar violating his boundaries and kissing him without his consent--because Korra and especially Asami are precious girls and could do no wrong.
And the thing is that it gets kinda complicated because Korra did also get a lot of racialized misogyny flung at her by the racist&misogynistic dudebros of the fanbase who hated that a brown girl was now the avatar, but that wound up overshadowing the very real and reasonable criticisms that can be made of her character and her behavior. Especially in Book 2, where she gets angry enough at Mako for -checks notes- doing his job and not wanting to jump to conclusions that she TRASHES HIS OFFICE!!!!! IN A FIT OF RAGE!!!!!! (which of course Mako gets blamed for and a lot of fans will frame that as Korra getting 'reasonably upset' which lol no)--and the fact that this occurs in the same season as Bolin getting trapped in an explicitly toxic and abusive relationship with a Water Tribe girl (who happens to be Korra's cousin) that is played for laughs the entire fucking time makes me think that Bryke just have very troubling ideas about how it's ok for women to treat their significant others, particularly if they happen to be men.
(Although let it not be said that they didn't write toxic relationships from the other side, Varrick spends the entire series mistreating Zhu Li and then at the end he decides he's in love with her and they get married [in a very Western ceremony, incidentally], and nothing is ever mentioned of the awful way he treated her for the entire show.)
So yeah like, it really, really bothers me that Katara and Mako share similar niches in their respective teams and both of them get a whole lot of untoward hatred for -checks notes- being teenagers and having feelings and sometimes expressing them. They both deserve so much better from their respective fanbases, and I think the biggest reason Katara has a bigger and more devoted defense squad is because atla is still pretty widely regarded as the best installment of the franchise and a lot of people just don't care to even watch lok. The bulk of the lok fanbase is anti Mako and it's hard to maintain any resilience as a fandom in the face of that lmao.
But I'm always happy to talk about how much I love him and if I can only turn the tide one anon at a time then that's ok.

Ask Games! I love thinking about my writing and reading habits. Ask me things!
E: What character do you identify with most? Is there a certain fic of yours that captures these qualities particularly well?
I don't tend to write characters I identify with, because most of the time, they're not terribly interesting characters. Dutiful homebodies with active imaginations and pleasant work/life balance aren't the stuff of epics. (Although I realize I've just described a hobbit, so maybe they're just not the characters I want to read about.)
But let's face it, we're all here to talk about SoC, so let's turn the question around a bit; while I don't have a particular character I specifically identify with, I see at least a bit of myself in the crows:
Kaz: a smart, irascible schemer whose life is informed by trauma and arranges the world around him to get what he wants/avoid addressing his own needs. I don't love this, but of all of them, he's definitely the one I get the most.
More crows behind the cut!
Inej: a dutiful, pious daughter trying to make sense of her existence and make peace with a religion that doesn't quite fit her experience anymore.
Jesper: An impulsive boy whose brain doesn't quite work the way society thinks it ought to, and who self medicates in the best way he can.
Wylan: Privilege personified and still has been told over and over that he's not enough.
Matthias: Running head first into the discovery that the things he was taught are not accurate and struggling with his faith and world view as a result.
Nina: I love food, too. Nina is everything I am not, but I love her existence and I love seeing a fat, femme woman being unapologetically herself.
M: What’s the weirdest AU scenario you’ve ever come up with? Did it turn into a story?
I am extremely new to playing in AUs. I used to be one of those absolute assholes who would loudly proclaim the purity of my fanfiction consumption and refused to read anything that wasn't canon compliant, but I've (1) relaxed and (2) realized that some of the most astounding work I've read in any fandoms have been AUs, so I'm adjusting. (Sidebar: choosing kindness is important to me and it rankles a bit that I have not been entirely kind in this regard, so I'm trying to very conscientiously do better.)
It's still very alien for me to think about writing AUs because a lot of my interest in a property is tied to the worldbuilding. Modern Business is my first and only stab at one, which is mostly weird inasmuch as I'm attempting to write a Modern AU that goes into the economics of a modern Ketterdam while also addressing feelings. It's not something I've seen before and I'm spending a lot of time trying to meld a narrative about human trafficking and fighting against it in a modern context, in a way that makes the world still recognizably the Grishaverse, rather than vaguely European with the serial numbers filed off.
X: How would you categorize your fanfic reading? Are you a voracious reader? Do you carefully pick and choose? Something in between?
For recovering asshole reasons, I've previously been *very* choosy, but I'm trying to give fics I wouldn't have previously looked at a chance. I'm not reading a ton right now because I have limited time in my day to spend on hobbies, and I'm writing a lot more than I'm reading. I'm also trying to be very conscientious about leaving comments and have not been reading when I know I'm not going to have the bandwidth to engage meaningfully with the text, so my TBR pile is getting, uh, precarious.

Basic Training
This post has been sitting in my drafts for months now, during which I've come up with a few ways I wanted to write this post. This is what I've come up with.
Basic Training is the episode which made me hate Ben the most. The whole episode consisted him of being a stuck up brat only to be rewarded for it in the end.
This episode was the perfect opportunity to have Kevin in the spotlight and show how skilled and smart he is.
Gwen's presence in this episode was actually fine, there's no change needed for that.
Look, I know the shows named Ben 10 but we have seen Ben be the hero tons of times already.
And Ben being egoistic about his heroism is not something new in the franchise.
There have been episodes on the OS where Ben got a big head, yet I dont ever see anyone complaining about that.
Was is it because he was 10 that we excuse this behaviour? Nope.
15 - 16 is still pretty young and his attitude can be excused at this age as well.
My opinion? It was handled better in the OS.
There were times when Ben wasn't always the main focus.
In Lucky Girl, Ben has his ' who's your hero?' Moment.
They showed Gwen feeling jealous and hurt by the fact she wasn't noticed much.
It was realistic.
Then the epsiode proceeded to focus on Gwen , having Ben being kind of like a sub plot to the story.
Towards the end Ben compliments her.
So yeah Ben got big head, but at the same time they shifted focus so that the audience wouldn't find it annoying.
Gwen was in the spotlight for a bit, giving people a break from Ben.
Secondly , in Be Afraid Of The Dark, Ben again is shown to be slightly stuck up, but towards the end of that episode he learns and acknowledges Gwen and Grandpa for help and understands his crime fighting is more of a team effort.
In Galactic Enforcers, we are shown there are other heros besides Ben as well.
Ben wasn't the sole focus of that episode. Yes it was about him but also about the Galactic Enforcers.
I don't think he was shown to be over confident here , but it was nice to see some other heros in the scene.
The Ben 10,000 episode focuses on how Ben was too focused on his job and the lesson at that was Ben needed to relax and have them Galactic Enforcers take the lead instead.
Again , his attitude towards everything was brought in focus but towards the end he learnt something.
I recently started watching Generator Rex and I can't help but compare Rex's character to Ben's.
Rex is also proud , rushes into things and considers himself to be a hotshot. But they also show him being down ,having trouble with his nanites and actually voice out his insecurities.
He's still the hero, still has things go his way most times but it's not annoying like Ben.
( I've only seen like 7 episodes so far so I don't know if this going to go down hil or not but so far so good)
The issue with the sequels after the OS was that Ben was the focus a bit too much.
We as the audience were rarely ever given a break from him.
Other than a few conversations here and there about his attitude, nothing really was done about it.
Gwen should've been appreciated more for saving Kevin and Kevin should've been appreciated for stopping Aggregor.
But they weren't.
If it had been Ben , they would've made sure to show him getting some sort of recognition or trophy.
Back to the Basic Training episode.
We know he's the legendary Ben Tennyson, we know he's a hero. We didn't need another episode on it.
Instead the plot should've focused on Kevin. His skills, his abilities.
Ben would act the same but Magsiter Hulka should've put some sort of cover so Ben couldn't use the omnitrix.
Ben goes on breaking rules, and having a hard time being a hero without the watch.
Towards the end, it should've been Kevin who cracks the case and saves Hulka. Ben is mad he can't use the omnitrix but instead uses the guns and other weapons he's learnt to use at the academy
He's not amazing at them , but it makes him realise that he is hero , watch or not, something that has been emphasised in the show. Its not impossible for him to function without the watch.
Towards the end, Ben getting a 95 was a stretch. I'm sorry , but the guy wasn't great with using weapons and without the watch I dont think he would've been able to complete that hostage excercise.
I'm thinking more like 89%.
Gwen gets 98, that's fine and Kevin gets a 100.
Hulka comes in and awards the medal (?) to Kevin, suggesting he's becoming more like his father.
( im ignoring the ret con, plus the retcon I'm assuming wasnt thought off at this point by the writers)
Ben is shown to take one of the guns back to earth, because he thinks they're cool and he wants to practice and get better at them.
The whole hostage situation makes him want to get better at making strategies.
Yes he's good at improv, but he needs to learn to properly plan as well.
It doesn't matter if he's never shown to use the gun ever again, and he's back to relying on the omnitrix.
Or maybe some time down the line, he could use the weapon, even if it for a second, to show that he is improving and getting better.
Before you say 'he's already a hero, he doesn't need to learn anything ' sorry but no.
He's 16. He may have saved the world but he still has growing up to do. Different battles are going to arise all the time.
Saying he is perfect at 16 is dumb. Saying he's perfect when he's ben 10k , it'll make some sense. He's been around for a while and is pretty experienced.
The watch is a part of him, but seeing him try to explore other options would've been a fresher idea.
Another scene that made me mad was the court (?) scene in Vreedle, Vreedle.
Ben being a hero shouldn't make him above the law.
Domstol ruling in favor of Ben just because he's the legendry Ben Tennyson was stupid.
After Ben's little monologue , and destroying Domstols desk, the judge should've just informed him that being a hero does not excuse him from following the law.
Kevin could've had his little moment doing some negotiation ( would've been nice to see how he works as con artist) and Ben could've jumped in and helped while making some good points for the argument, showing us he's not stupid.
Then having Domstol rule in their favor would've made sense.
On the way back to earth there could've been a joke about how Ben watches Judge Judy too much which is where he learnt about trials and stuff. Or maybe Gwens dad taught him a thing or two at some point.
All this doesn't mess with Ben's character all that much, he's still the hero of the show, he still has his ego but it makes him more likeable, shifts focus from his attitude, and shows us he's pretty smart and is growing into a good hero.
Ben's not a bad guy. I mean he is the hero of the show. There are tons of scenes which show he's good , like the whole sacrificing thing so the ultimates could live and all.
But little scenes here and there tend to be enough for someone , especially for someone who isn't a super hard-core Ben lover to form negative opinions on him.
Although calling him a psychopath / narc is out of line because I don't find him to be like that. His attitude was magnified by him being in the spotlight too much and writers not having a good balance in writing situations.
Ben being the main character of the show is at risk of becoming hated or less appreciated just because he's the font runner of the show.
Admit it, side characters tend to get more love most times than the main agonist of shows.
I've been watching videos on YouTube on this topic as to why this happens , and what I've come up with is that writers of shows tend to focus too much on main character. Things seem to go their way most times and this tends to get on peoples nerves, consciously or subconsciously because it's not exactly realistic.
Having shows where everything focuses on one person most times tend to backfire.
I don't mind Ben having a big head, I dont mind him making jokes and being so casual.
It's his defense mechanism to protect himself from drowning into the struggles and pressures of being a hero. But always having him be that way isn't good.
The writers should've executed it properly.

I'm not going to stop anyone from replying to this because everyone has different opinions and we all have the freedom to express them.
Although I believe I've made my point and I've made sure to keep in mind all the arguments about why bashing Ben is wrong when he's not a bad guy while typing this out.
I don't think I've directed any major hate towards him , its mostly towards the writers for making the situations like that,but if you think I have you can reply to it.
I'm not gonna reply back though , because again I feel I've made my point.
