to have a family scaramouche x gn!spouse!reader... maybe a small bundle of joy too (MODERN AU AND PURE FLUFF FLUFF FLUFF)
Tumblr media
the small baby sucked and attempted to bite into a toy with his teeth that haven't even grown in. once he realized it wasn't going to work, he flipped the toy upside down and was bound to chew on the other end before his father snatched it from him.
chubby, grabby hands reached for it, followed by quiet whines as scaramouche tutted, "come now, you should eat actual food."
to his surprise, the baby started biting on his own fingers instead and scaramouche panicked. "h-hey, don't do that, you'll hurt yourself!" he exclaimed, gently trying to tug his son's fingers from his mouth.
scaramouche picked up the child from his crib and sighed.
"your favourite parent is going to be here soon, rest assured, kuzushi." he deadpanned as soon as he saw his son's eyes light up. scaramouche jutted his chin in pride with a scoff, "well, i'll always be the better cook."
walking to the kitchen with the baby in his arms, he settled him into the high chair so he could open one of the cabinets, grabbing a jar labeled as baby food.
he popped out the cap and dipped a small spoon inside before making his way back to the fussy child, who began to whimper and cry. scaramouche pulled up a chair, "papa's little baby is hungry, hm?"
it's surprising, just how identical kuzushi is to his father. with big, round, violet eyes and long indigo hair that usually had to be tied back, the only thing he inherited from you in appearance would be your fascinating skin tone.
kuzushi already had his mouth wide open, making quiet sounds of, 'ah, ah', indicating he was indeed, hungry. scaramouche chuckled and fed him a spoonful of vegetable puree, which kuzushi ate up to his content.
"eat a lot so you'll grow big and strong just like your papa." scaramouche cooed as the baby giggled. the sound of the doorbell caused the both of them to glance at the entrance out of instinct.
scaramouche put down the jar of puree and rushed to open the front door. "my love," he sighed out with a grin. you smiled back at him, his heart fluttering in his chest.
"hello, darling! i trust kuzushi wasn't too much work." you greeted as scaramouche helped you bring the grocery bags inside. kuzushi leaned over his high chair, babbling incoherent words when he saw you.
you made your way to him in long strides, "and hello to you too, baby! mwah!" you kissed his rosy cheeks, your son giggling. scaramouche groaned and jokingly commented, "and nothing special for me after i took care of our demanding son?"
you laughed and caressed your husband's face, placing a lovely kiss against his frown. your mouth enveloped his so perfectly; scaramouche adored your kisses. his lips gradually curled up into a smile that was only meant for you and his son.
kuzushi suddenly shouted, knocking the puree jar off of the high chair table. scaramouche rolled his eyes, "looks like someone's jealous."
you grinned, relaxing in scaramouche's embrace and you kissed him one more time. "i love the both of you, there should be no competition between my favourite boys." you ruffled kuzushi's hair as he glared at his father.
kuzushi grabbed onto your shirt with a pout, striving to keep you with him. you nervously chuckled as scaramouche clung to your other side. the two threw dirty looks at each other.
"baby... he's a one year old-"
"he's a mastermind."

Oh I forgot to ask a question!
😂
Ok, here it is: Who’s your inspirations for your artistry?
Big question, I know.
^__^
hmmmm you're right, that is a big question! since you asked "who" i'm going to assume you mean other artists?
for painting i'm particularly inspired by Anthony Cudahy, Alex Beck, Sterling Hundley, Ashley Wood (all contemporary,) Euan Uglow, Joaquin Sorolla, Sargent, Arkady Plastov, Ivan Shishkin, Konstantin Yuon, Ferenc Pinter, and a number of names in the Brandywine school like Mead Schaeffer and NC Wyeth.
i reformatted my brain a little in 2021 by reading Fujimoto's Chainsaw Man. Other mangaka are Hirohiko Araki, Kosuke Fujishima, Otomo, Inoue, Urasawa, Miura. the 2S artist Brandon Hoax is a HUGE inspiration to me. same for Chase Conley, Peter Chung, Freddy Carrasco, Xia Gordon, Ron Wimberly, Chris Kindred, Mel Tow, Hiro Isono, mozame_mo, Yoshitake Yamane, @maxbanshees @potogawaryuiki @coshkunz @cparrisartand @fourcorneredgod @newjackcole @choodraws @doctop @hirosemaryhello @nocturnalwalkr @fanficciera @oak-n @purenonsens @juangeedraws @plaest2k @blackblobyellowcone @turndecassette2 many more friends and strangers whose work i'm delighted to spend time traveling thru (and whose names i'll add in once i publish this enormous reply lol. rn i'm afraid of tumblr eating it!!)
most importantly, my partner Anka @kingfisher-cove charmed and captivated me from day one. the personality and dynamism of their work, specificity of place, time, body, personal effects, there's always been so much life in their art. i have little to no interest in stories/characters without limits, where mobility is never a concern, especially featuring the wealthy. stories where people don't sweat or pee or have "bad" teeth or talk too loud. Anka's always portrayed peeling paint and rusted metal as a fact of life. you get a sense of dimension/volume in their art— the way material hangs off a body, and that body's form, how gravity and weight conform feet to the ground— and the same goes for the personalities and ideas populating it. the viewer too has a home here beyond "representation." it's not just window-dressing, nor ponderous hyperrealism. there's cartoon whimsy and cartoon stakes. i wish i could describe the extent it's meaningful to me. i feel lucky to see it! plus i really making them yell and art is a good way of accomplishing it.
so because this is veering into WHAT inspires me...
other than like, transness and communism and everything that entails, i'm inspired heavily by pornography and leather culture, and (mostly vintage) magazines like Honcho and Juggs, 70s italian erotica/nunsploitation. relatedly, the lush scenes of Pierre et Gilles and Tarsem and Christian Riese Lassen. i'm also deeply inspired by hyperlink/multimedia art, such as that by Olia Lialina of @oneterabyteofkilobyteage or projects like Ted's Cave. places and delights of my childhood like Myst/Riven, Fin Fin, rural river water, rocky beaches, soft glowing glades, sharks in coral outcrops. autonomy and dissociation, too.
with a lot of the artists i mentioned, there is a handiness, a presence in their work, a dedication to indulgence and/or experimentation, in subject, setting, medium, whatever. an interest not feigned. i also love maximalist colour and texture... in drawings, in textiles, anything! worldwide and through history. i'm inspired by golden age illustration and Iranian turquoise and carpets. miniatures. iconography. lotuses. magnolia.
you can fake sincerity of course. when it comes to making art that seems like a waste of precious effort. when i get a sense that the artist really loves People beyond serving up a telephone game of vibe-mood-aesthetic... that is cool to me. if the art isn't well-lived, then it's well-cared for. a lot of the nostalgia fodder is based on a memory of a memory that was sold for mass market consumers, so i'm a bit distrusting of it. which isn't to say that i don't love a tone poem (i do-- Legend is one of my favourite films) nor that it requires "realism" to accomplish either. i love being sold on the ridiculous. i respond well to like, an artist (in whatever respect) showing me something absurd with 100% unbridled earnestness and fearlessness about being silly. my top 3 favourite series are JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Metal Gear Solid, and Ace Attorney. these are objectively as exaggerated in their drama as they are serious about their intent, and populated by straight freaks. one of my favourite directors is Michael Mann (Miami Vice, Manhunter, Heat, Thief, Collateral) who is known for his obsessive, even illustrative details but also, Audioslave plays during an emotional night drive. they don't let Audioslave play during an emotional night drive anymore. all these things are related lmao. let me go on a further tangent
there's an internal logic, right? and when it's flipped? that's the best. i don't mean a "twist," either. it's something else-- the author/artist revealing that, emotionally, things were always more complex than you were lead to believe, and it recontextualises the entire piece. if surprise is the best part of comedy then i think the same goes for melancholy. i love when the rug is pulled out from under me through something as simple as the reimagined N'doul episodes of the JJBA OVA. (YES! YES! I'LL TALK ABOUT IT FOREVER! I'M CRAZY! BUT I'M RIGHT!) is it a twist? nothing's actually changed about where the story is headed. you know where it's headed. but the meaning of that story has-- by creating an emotional trapdoor like that, it establishes a particular sense of suspense.
i'm mentioning these because i rewatched them recently-- films like Solaris and Sunshine and... you know what? Terminator are bigger to me than their subject matter because the emotional space they create is unnerving, where hope is fragile if it's present at all. something hard to accomplish... the bittersweet potency of ironic regret.
i'll keep adding to this. i could go on and on lol

Writer's Block and Creativity [a ramble]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photo credits: Left (@life-and-love-in-a-myst) Center (@shakespearesdaughters) (Right (@hotch-girl)
Let me put a poll in here before I start the rambling part of this post. I've got two pretty fluffy story ideas. One is for Aaron and one is for Emily. Which would you like to read first? They will be reader inserts as always. Hotch's is with BAU reader and Emily's is a Non-BAU reader. I'm equally excited for each, thus letting you all decide. (The poll will be up for 24 hours)
Now to the rambling. I was close to feeling very burnt out and having lots of writer's block at the start of this week. I just couldn't think about anything new like I normally do. And I think this process is natural for any writer or artist. It's bound to happen eventually. That feeling may hit me again tomorrow. But now that I'm back in my own apartment (I was at my mom's place for a little over a month for the break), I feel the spark again. it's not a raging fire, but I hope to stoke the flames gently. Writing is something I've been working on for some time. It's been my friend for years. So I guess I just want to encourage those who are feeling like they have nothing left to give that that's normal and fine. You can take a break. You can rest. The ideas will come when it's right. And I'm proud of you for ever having put a single word on a page (published or not). [I'm telling this to myself too.]
I'll probably delete this later, but just felt like saying that I don't always love what I put out. And that's okay. I still did the hard thing, and I'm proud of myself for it.
Love you all! Levi - ❤️

*This list is NOT exhaustive. There are simply too many stories which evoke the underworld, the seasons, or any of the gods who rule over either for me to put on one list. In fact, you'd be hard-pressed to find a myth that doesn't eventually get tied back to one or the other. These are the most essential players whose key significance is tied to the chthonic cycles and themes.
Thanks for reading and I hope you found it helpful. I hope to do more quick lists like this, if others are interested, so feel free to let me know which pantheons and domains would most help.

Tumblr media
you can just taste the salt pouring from this man lmao. I only dismissed an entire medium as never being able to be art, why are you all whining
Tumblr media
1.) Myst released in 1993, the same year as Sonic CD. Calling it an example of games "from the infancy of the form" following the video game market crash of the '80s is laughable
2.) "I particularly didn't want to play one right now, this moment, on demand" - uwu I just shittalked this entire-ass medium and now people are saying I should try to know what I'm talking about before I talk about it and I don't wannaaaaa
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is just. Rude? Idk how else to put it. Your friend goes to the trouble of offering to fetch a game and a console for you, installing everything necessary to set it up - even offering to send the console back to Sony when you're done so you don't have to spend a single dime - and your response is to make some excuse as to why you can't do it.
You could have just said "no," Roger.
Tumblr media
yeah it's almost like talking out of your ass "purely on theoretical grounds" without engaging with the thing you're slagging off makes you seem too ignorant to hold a valid view on the thing you're slagging off. or something.
also "This is the gratitude you get for responding to comments at all" lol these salt levels could dry out the Dead Sea
Tumblr media Tumblr media
my man has never heard of video games with linear narratives before
Tumblr media
Billy cracked dick jokes, Ebert. Billy wrote his plays to appeal to the common people's interests, Ebert.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
then why are you talking about video games if you don't want to be told to play one? real "I'm a Sonic fan who hasn't played the games, stop telling me to play the games you're picking on me" energy
Tumblr media
The fuck is up with this weird capitalistic pitting of one art form against another? This isn't some zero-sum game where literature loses if video games win. Gamers read too, Ebert. In fact, many games take inspiration from literature, such as SH2 drawing inspiration from the themes of Crime and Punishment; The Witcher being based on Andrzej Sapkowski's book; and Metro 2033 springing from the self-published book of the same name.
I could name more. I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream (Harlan Ellison even voiced AM!). Classic RPG Parasite Eve is a spiritual successor to Hideaki Sena's 1995 sci-fi horror novel. Beev will probably want me to add Castlevania as an example as well, taking the titular character from Bram Stoker's Dracula.
Category:Video games based on novels - Wikipedia
Acting like games and literature are two disparate mediums with no overlap is... frankly, deeply disingenuous. You spoke with fucking Clive Barker, Roger, you should know this. FFS.
Besides, anti-intellectualism runs a lot deeper than New Medium Bad. It has more fascist roots than simply "The kids want to play Fortnite all day and don't want to crack open a book!"
Tumblr media
Roger goes on this tangent about how it's difficult to find a definition of art that would preclude video games. Even the one he settles on, his view that art ought to teach him empathy for other people - which... has its limits and when taken too far, borders on requiring moral didactism in art; my man has never heard of art for art's sake - doesn't necessarily rule out games. Because video games literally require you to step into the player character's shoes.
Tumblr media
you are such a condescending ass, oh my God. could you not?
"I don't personally know how gamers can learn about other human beings despite the entire conceit of the medium requiring you to assume the role of another person, but whatever, I'll give you guys this one because I've run out of things to say. Perhaps one day gamers will learn to have refined tastes like me, the Movie Review Man. anyway y'all losers, I got better things to do despite the fact that I typed out this wall of text poorly defending my position"

Hi Caro 🥰 would you be willing to do a top five ranking for 1. Top Five best love/sex scene writers for romance and 2. Top five best love/sex scene writers for specifically historical romance?
Hi! Of course I would, my filter is liberal and I love talking about sex scenes so much.
So generally speaking, I think the top 5 for me would be:
Sierra Simone--just the queen; she writes so many different types of sex scenes so well; monogamous, polyamorous, f/f, m/m, m/f, any combination of the above. The scenes feel varied and unique; there is a vast difference between the intense but also kind of funny sex you'll read in The Last Crimes of Peregrine Hind versus the weird, dark-yet-hot orgy scene in A Lesson in Thorns. Even the types of domination and give and take are different. Like, both Lesson and New Camelot feature an m/m/f dynamic, but the way Auden conducts himself as a dom is so different from the way Ash does. And the way Poe and St. Sebatian submit shares so few similarities with Greer and Embry's submission to Ash. She's amazing.
Joanna Shupe/Mila Finelli--there is obviously a big difference between the way she writes sex scenes as Joanna versus Mila (I would say that even the pretty intense sex in Joanna's self-published novellas isn't quite as high octane as what she writes as Mila). But either way, I think she manages to make the sex feel unique to the couples, and she makes it very interesting and at times funny. Like, even when characters are having rough sex, there's an element of humor to it when appropriate; like the scene in Mafia Madman when Enzo has Gia chained to his bed spread eagle and is fingerbanging her while his employees work on renovations in the same room, lol.
Tiffany Reisz--I think a lot of Tiffany's work straddles the line between romance and erotica, and I'm including her because like... she can write a really dark scene that does not express love in the way I imagine a lot of people see it, while still conveying the love. I mean, she wrote a Catholic priest who's an actual sadist and literally cannot get it up without inflicting pain... But I still found him very compelling and completely believe the love he feels for his lovers. Does she go too far sometimes? Yeah. But when she hits, I think she hits very well and Tiffany at her best is provocative while also creating this amazing emotional connection between the characters.
Kresley Cole--writes some of the most insane paranormal sex scenes (blood blowjobs, fucking on an altar in the jungle, heroes literally hulking out during sex) while somehow keeping you in touch with the romantic connection between the leads? Her non-PNR sex scenes are just as good. I just enjoy her creativity and total commitment to the cause. Like, I still think of her kicking IAD off with things like... Nikolai commanding Myst to come while holding her magic chain, and Lachlain chasing Emma through the woods in full beast mode to deflower her, lol.
Adriana Anders--I've only read one of her books thus far (oops) but Possession really blew me away in terms of sex scenes. Not just in terms of the kink involved (I mean, there's a consensual kidnapping) but in terms of the total acceptance of kinks and different means of sexual expression. You can feel the love and respecting for that world in her writing.
Historical-specific:
Joanna Shupe--all the same reasons as before, but I also feel like Joanna does a great job with writing sex scenes that are more inventive for trad historicals. I loved Lockwood being into rough sex, and this being treated as valid and not abusive. It feels like a lot of trad heroes have to apologize away even super light kinks to satisfy readers.
Grace Callaway--Super explicit and creative, with a focus on acts that aren't super common in historicals (butt stuff). I enjoy the kink positivity and normalization of like... the sexually voracious heroine. She writes with humor AND heat.
Elizabeth Hoyt--The icon. I love the individualized distinctions in her sex scenes, her commitment to writing sex in uncomfortable places (like death row) and the general earthiness with which she writes. It's very evocative.
Scarlett Peckham--Scarlett explicitly explores kink in her books, and writes a rarely truly submissive historical romance hero (it's not just "let her ride me" it's "thank you mistress may I have another"). At the same time, she also writes great dominant heroes. Her most recent book allowed the hero and heroine to have a random threesome with a buddy in the middle of the book. I so appreciate that approach.
Cat Sebastian--Cat's sex scenes aren't always as explicit as the above authors' (they kind of vary) but they're interesting and creative. Even when the pairing is m/f, they are not always straightforward heteronormative scenes in terms of their dynamics and preferences. She thinks outside the box.

What is Myst writing?????? Things! I'm writing things and then jumping to other things... and more things...
These things ofcourse are being done in a very haphazard way, a little bit here a little bit there. I've posted snippets randomly but haven't published any updates lately. I will I think and perhaps go on an announced hiatus as opposed to just not publishing any chapters quietly.
The following is a bit more work on the companion piece to 40 Days. Mind the tags.
Warning: Violence; Graphic; Cursing; Dark Harry; Murderous Harry; Dark Humor; First Person POV
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I turned on my side, ignoring the faint pull of the wet floor on my damp clothing, meeting the wide eyes of the man next to me. “You see I figured it out– I mean it took me awhile—I’m not Hermione Granger after all.” I gave a small laugh at that, thinking of Hermione back in the tent counting her syllables. She was a little stuck right now, but in the end, she would be alright.
I’d make sure of it.
“Listening to Dumbledore was where I went wrong. He meant well of course and I suppose his ideals were admirable. “ I mimicked his old man voice with its perpetual twinkly optimism. “It is important to fight and fight again, and keep fighting, Harry, for only then can evil be kept at bay though never quite eradicated.”
I sat up, the revelation rushing through me again with an almost mad glee. “But he was wrong! It can be eradicated!” I held up my wet and bruised hand, the cuts oozing. “You just have to be willing to see it through, to embrace the consequence.”
I turned to the man next to me, ignoring his flinch. “I almost had it when Sirius died and I went after Bellatrix. I felt the resolve inside me as I chased that fucking mad bitch.” The echo of the emotions from that day still burned, joining the fire already inside me that pulsed erratically, flaring and snarling. “Crucio,” I whispered and the man whimpered as he stared up at me with glazed eyes.
“I don’t even have my wand pointed at you, you stupid git,” I told him rolling my eyes as I leaned closer to his face. “We’re having a conversation here aren’t we?” Slytherin’s locket shifted on my neck its pulse matching my own. The man’s eyes shifted watching the faint swing of the locket and his eyes half closed as if he was being lulled to sleep.
I dug my fingers into the hole in his shoulder and his eyes flared wide again as he tried to scream. “Don’t fall asleep that’s kind of rude innit?” Satisfied he was properly awake again I sat back, crossing my legs and bracing my elbows on my knees resting my head on my hands.
“What Dumbledore got wrong — and honestly even Voldemort gets wrong— is that you cannot create a new society on top of the old. There is no re-education, there is no redemption. You have to destroy in order to create.” There were cracks of apparition outside and I smiled down at the master potioneer who had been supplying Death Eaters to survive.
“People like you are like fertilizer for them to grow. Your fucking weakness, your victimhood enables them to thrive. I have to not just destroy them—” I leaned close to him as the door slammed open. “I have to destroy you too. I will eradicate every single fucking root, so she can have a safer world.”
Three death eaters rushed into the room and stopped gaping at the sight. Blood was so thick on the floor it pooled, the dimness of the room making it appear like black toxic puddles. I could feel it clinging to me, spattered in my hair and face, and soaking my clothes. The pieces of bodies surrounded me, dripping and eyes staring vacantly while their mouths were twisted in screams cut short.
The lead death eater visibly leaned back at the sight. “What the bloody fuck happened here?”
The lead death eater visibly leaned back at the sight. “What the bloody fuck happened here?”
I laughed at the phrase.  Bloody fuck.  Yeah, that was kind of apt. These arseholes (forgive me Hermione) were unintentionally hilarious quite often.
The man on the left growled at me, “You think that’s funny boy?” He raised his wand. “Crucio!”
I dodged the spell, my wand pointing at his wrist, “Diffindo!” He screamed as he fell to his knees clutching the stump where his arm used to be. His voice shook as he screamed, his mouth opening wider than seemed possible.  The trilling decibels of his screaming almost seemed like he was doing some type of macabre opera.
My hand! Oh, my bloody hand! Where did you go…
“Fuck! Ernie!” The other wizard ran to the man on the floor his wand trying to stem the spurting blood.
I laughed harder as I dodged the green killing spell of the leader.  The changeable beat of my heart lurched again, twisting inside me as I rolled, endorphins rushing through me like a drug.  Ernie? Voldemort has a death eater named Ernie.  Like fuck, these guys…. So hilarious.
like father, like son scaramouche x gn!spouse!reader and baby kuzushi (fluff, modern au, mentions of scaramouche sibling au)
Tumblr media
"ah. what's this?"
scaramouche queried, using his index finger to open kuzushi's mouth. kuzushi babbled and instantly trapped his father's fingertip. scaramouche gawked and pulled his finger away. you approached the two, "what's what?"
scaramouche deadpanned, wiping the saliva on his shirt, "some sort of nub in his upper gums." your eyes lit up, "really? he's probably teething at this point." you smiled at the baby who looked up at you.
"say, 'ahh', for me, kuzu." you cooed and kuzushi complied, "aaah-" with his mouth wide open, you gently prodded at the bump. scaramouche watched closely. you took your finger away before kuzushi could bite down on it.
"his teeth are growing in alright. oh, i should've bought teething toys ahead of time..." a lightbulb instantly went off in your head. you innocently smiled, looking over to your husband, who raised a brow.
"kuni, you have a high pain tolerance, right?" you queried. scaramouche scanned you up and down, "...why are you asking?" kuzushi took his father's fingers into his mouth once more.
you nodded with a hopeful grin.
scaramouche sighed.
so for the next few days, scaramouche's fingers were a substitute for kuzushi's teething toy. what he thought would be okay, was simply put, hell. "fuck-!" scaramouche winced, holding his hand in pain. kuzushi looked at him with big eyes.
"fu-"
"don't say that."
scaramouche hissed, examining his fingers that were red and sore with kuzushi's nibble marks. "it feels like damn knives, holy shit," he muttered, rushing to the kitchen to run his hand under cold water.
kuzushi began to fuss, having nothing to dig his "tooth" into. when suddenly...
"kuzushi, don't eat that!" scaramouche panicked, pulling the baby away from the play-pen's plastic fence. his pupils dilated with horror. "you practically chewed it up! that could've been my fingers!" he yelped, looking at the guiltless baby in his arms.
scaramouche settled kuzushi back into the play-pen and like a savage, he crawled all over the area before finding something to feast upon. an innocent teddy bear... torn to shreds by kuzushi's dangerous bump in the gums.
scaramouche's breath was trapped in his throat as kuzushi giggled and tumbled about the colorful puzzle mats.
that night, scaramouche did research. a lot of it. not the type of research like, "what to do if your child is eating everything like a wild beast," thankfully, but, "alternatives for teething toys."
scaramouche was not going to lose his fingers to his own... one-year-old. you looked up from the book you were reading in the bed next to scaramouche, who was still on his laptop.
"maybe i could invite childe over to be kuzushi's teething toy... but i don't know where that fucker's hands have been. damn germs." he murmured, adjusting his reading glasses. you gently nudged him with your shoulder, "is it that bad?"
scaramouche put his computer aside and collapsed his head onto your lap, "you have no idea, love." he closed his eyes as you ran a hand through his hair. he re-opened his eyes to glance at kuzushi, sleeping soundfully in the crib.
scaramouche sat up, taking off his glasses to place them on the drawer, "that simple nub in his gums could be the answer to another archon war." he joked and you laughed. scaramouche placed a kiss on your lips and you promptly kissed back.
"goodnight, sweetheart. i'm sure you'll think of something." you said, resting your head on his chest as he laid down. scaramouche stared at the ceiling, "yeah..."
the next morning, he was more than determined to solve this issue. kuzushi creepily glared at his father from the pile of shredded toys, or so scaramouche would describe it. with nothing to chew on, kuzushi scooched closer to him in anticipation.
scaramouche extended his arm with a closed hand. and opening it, he instantly shoved a marshmallow into kuzushi's mouth. the marshmallow, much too big to swallow, kuzushi began chewing on it. the baby clapped his hands with satisfaction.
scaramouche beamed, "success! i knew that one stupid godfather of mine would come to use one day."
scaramouche and mona have taken a strange liking to marshmallows since they were kids when venti fed it to them even though he wasn't supposed to. for what reason, i wonder.
Carmen Sandiego Dossiers
One of my biggest video projects currently is an epic, lengthy deep dive into the making of the original 1985 version of Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? I've corresponded with everyone involved in the game, from the CEO to the guy who designed the box art.
In the interest of being thorough, I decided to ask around about the identities of the Broderbund employees who posed as the "suspects" in the original manual (back before dossiers were included right in the game). Here's what I found:
Carmen Sandiego was played by Marsha Bell (née Goodman) whose job title was Advertising / Marketing Secretary. She also appeared on the cover of the sequel, but she is not the woman on the cover of the first game. The cover model's identity is still unknown.
Merey LaRoc was an anagram for Carol Emery, who was the Product Acquisitions Secretary or "Acquisitions Eminence Grise" depending on who you asked.
Dazzle Annie Nonker was a partial anagram for Ann Kronen, Product Manager on such programs as Dazzle Draw and The Print Shop.
Lady Agatha Wayland was Kay Wayland, who was an Admin Assistant in Product Development before becoming a Product Manager for programs like Fantavision.
Len "Red" Bulk was Ken Bull, who'd become the lead programmer on the Carmen sequels after Dane Bigham left.
Scar Graynolt was Carmen co-creator Lauren Elliott. It's a shame Gene Portwood and Dane Bigham don't also appear as crooks, seems like it would've been an obvious thing to do? The name is an anagram for company co-founder Gary Carlston.
Nick Brunch was Dane's roommate Scott Shumway, who programmed various ports (including Carmen C64).
Fast Eddie B. was Ed Bernstein, Editorial Director of Product Development who oversaw all the Product Managers. He later founded Palladium Interactive, who published the MYST parody PYST.
Ihor Ihoravich was Alick Dziabczenko, a programmer who worked on The Toy Shop. If this is an anagram, I can't figure it out.
Katherine "Boom-Boom" Drib was Katherine "Cricket" Bird, who was one of two Product Managers on this very game, taking over for the previous Product Manager halfway through development. More on that in the eventual video.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Harbinger
Original Release: 1996
Developer: Stormfront Studios
Publisher: Viacom New Media
Platform: MS-DOS
Tumblr media
DS9 Harbinger is a Myst-style adventure game. Each part of the level is made up of still images, with you clicking the edge of the screen to move around and turn in very limited places. This allows the game to look very impressive visually, especially in screenshots. The 3D models of the characters look vert impressive for the time and everyone is wonderfully voice acted, using the original cast of DS9.
You play a diplomat named Bannick, called to DS9 to assist an ambassador in speaking with a new alien race called the Scythians. These aliens speak in an unusual manner and nobody other than the ambassador has been able to figure it out. As you reach DS9, you get attacked by drones (in an impressive FMV cutscene) and crash land. The drones stat building up to attack DS9. To make matters worse, when you visit the ambassador you discover that he has been murdered. You need to solve the murder, work out how to talk to the Scythians and find a way to stop the drones.
The part of the game on DS9 is great (once you get your head around navigating the station), with lots of conversation options and an intriguing mystery. Puzzles are mostly self-enclosed, leaving you to focus more on the narrative mystery.
In a few parts of the game, you have to man the weapons of DS9 (and a runabout). These sections are just click to shoot, but are surprisingly difficult and not fun at all.
The latter half of the game, once you leave DS9, is much more of a challenging puzzle game like Myst, where you have to navigate a maze (not easy due to how you move, working out how to ger around DS9 was difficult enough), and is very much a chore, especially as you have large periods with no talking. That said, working out how to trick the AIs in charge and talking to them towards the ends is a lot of fun.
Unfortunately, they couldn’t get the full cast of DS9 for this game, so O’Brien and Bashir are said to be on a mission (Worf hasn’t joined the cast yet). You do get to spend plenty of time with Sisko, Odo, Dax, Quark and Kira, though, so there’s still a lot of interaction with the crew.
Do you know that Myst had to have its series of comics?
Don't worry, not many know this!
Dark Horse Comics published the first issue in the '90s... And there was only another one after that, not even linked to the first.
It was meant to show what happened before the event narrated in the game but was an absolute flop.
"The Book of the Black Ships" showed Sirrus and Achenar being... Well, themselves, so two brothers that are always on the brink of making some disasters.
The real problem? The Publisher switched the two boys' names and personalities and when Cyan asked them to correct those ENORMOUS mistakes they replied something like "Nah", so Cyan canceled the contract.
If you want to read it anyway, I got a pdf just for you!
