I'm not invested in knowing a single thing about the series, but even from this distance it looks like a complete trainwreck
"Our tribe has been through some tough times, too. He's basically Jewish!" - bruh what. What is it about Knuckles that always prompts this kind of stuff, lmao
I don't know if I want to learn the context or leave it alone and maybe hope that it was fake. "bruh" is really the only reaction you can have.
Isn't that a bit antisemitic, too? Just shoehorning a reference to the Holocaust for shit and giggles? I honestly have no idea. Even ignoring the fact that they're comparing a cartoon echidna who is literally the only survivor of a slaughter (IIRC the second movie) to a real life population that survived similar tragedies... it just rubs me off the wrong way. What is the punchline? That Jewish people compare everything to the Holocaust, that they have to make it all about their past? I'm confused and uncomfortable.

Eggman: Would you like to be? :)
Which idw characters could be redeemed?
The comic itself is too far gone at this point, but I assume you mean if they appeared in the games or another media with a clean slate, which would presumably include not being written by hack writers who continue to pine for an older, deader comic. So...
Could be salvaged: -Tangle -Whisper -Jewel -Starline -Lanolin
Nothing to salvage: -Belle -Mimic -Clutch -Rough and Tumble

Sonic and Amy have better chemistry as friends because there's not this looming aura of expectation hanging over their heads. Frontiers was a bit of a missed opportunity in that it wanted to offer such a dynamic, but the somber mood put a damper on things; Amy sounded depressed and Sonic sounded bored.
I like it better when they get to riff on each other every once in a while, a la Amy joking that she'd let Sonic out of prison if he agreed to marry her (keyword here being "joke"). He's literally in a prison cell and he's still like "No way!" xP
Half the time the running gag behind SonAmy consists of forcing Sonic to be uncomfortable for comedy's sake, which doesn't allow him the grace of just being himself. At this point, that particular angle's overplayed.
The main issue with Sonamy is that they keep teasing the idea of it and how amazing it would be, but they never actually go anywhere or do anything with it. Why should anyone care if Sonic and Amy ever get into a serious relationship when all of their chemistry is either a shallow gag that isn't all too funny or unearned drama that doesn't fit either character?
There's also the fact that Sonic has far more interesting chemistry with other characters, but certain fans aren't ready to acknowledge that part.
To be fair, they don't have much of a choice since, as the games largely aren't about extensive focus on romance - for the better BTW, since that's best reserved for fanfics - there's no way it would ever actually become canon for real. So I can't really blame them for not being able to go anywhere with it... not that I'd want them to be able to do so anyway, lol.
However, since they're no doubt aware that it's never going to go anywhere, I can blame them for beating you over the head with it even with that knowledge, since all it does is cause fans to cry Sonamy Is Canon every time Sonic so much as remembers Amy is a person that exists, only to then realise it's another dead end, to which they throw the usual blueball accusations at SEGA or whoever else that's relevant. So fans of Sonamy keep setting themselves up for inevitable disappointment, and those who aren't fans (ie: me) once again fail to see what's so great about it.
Not only that... while I understand that different people will have different perspectives, headcanons, etc, especially in a fandom that's known for divided tastes, I think it's extremely telling that for all the hype surrounding Sonamy, there have been so many contradictory interpretations on how they would actually work. So I'm left wondering what the "real" Sonamy is supposed to be, which is surreal considering its popularity, and yet the answer I get tends to be along the lines of "idk but it's canon, deal with it hater".
On an unrelated note, my opinion on Sonelise has gone up considerably over the years.

Incidentally your analysis of Shadow's self dehumanization in Battle is what pisses me off with what Ian did with Shadow in early Sonic Universe. He took the "weapons aren't supposed to have hearts" severely out of context, applying it to all weapons even though we know Shadow was made more than just being one, and Emerl was modified in an attempt to no longer be one. He had Shadow randomly try to appeal to Omega and Metal as though they actually had individuality or thought to think of themselves when they never showed it. Metal fucking calls Shadow out on his "purpose" , but Shadow still naively keeps wangsting of "oh woe, another weapon didn't become good" which is stupid. Omega meanwhile had to have Gamma's "soul" uploaded to it to even change. Add to the fact that all attempts of Shadow doing this failed and eventually was abandoned, it's doubly infuriating
And then a couple Universe issues later he's being a sub wuss to Rouge being 100% with nuking Blaze's dimension just for gems :/
Flynn write moral dilemmas one way, and that's ripping off Batman Star Wars:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kind of makes Shadow's refusal to give Blaze the Sol Emeralds in Team Treasure Tango even stupider in hindsight because this exchange occurred before TTT. Somehow he regressed from offering Metal mercy to refusing to let Blaze have the Sol Emeralds just because Rouge really, really wanted them.
The implication is supposed to be that Shadow's learned that he's more than a weapon, but the message I'm getting here is "he can turn his moral scruples on and off like a faucet"
---
Metal fucking calls Shadow out on his "purpose" , but Shadow still naively keeps wangsting of "oh woe, another weapon didn't become good" which is stupid.
It's funny too because Shadow pretty much takes the opposite approach in Battle. He's all gloom and doom, waxing poetic about how destruction is the fate of weapons of war.
Flynn really telling on himself with how much he hasn't played Battle xP
---
Omega meanwhile had to have Gamma's "soul" uploaded to it to even change. Add to the fact that all attempts of Shadow doing this failed and eventually was abandoned, it's doubly infuriating
Then he doesn't have free will? Then he's possessed? Then Shadow has no reason to be all "come to the light"? lol wtf there was no reason to assume Omega didn't have free will in Heroes, given that he has a personality and expresses anger towards Eggman.
tfw the peak writing raises even more horrifying existential implications than the original
---
And then a couple Universe issues later he's being a sub wuss to Rouge being 100% with nuking Blaze's dimension just for gems :/
Even worse, Blaze told him if she didn't get the Sol Emeralds back that her world would end horrifically.
Actually, no, he admitted he didn't know how Blaze's world would end, just that she needed the Sol Emeralds back. Which smacks of pedantry to me; did he really need to know the gory details to know that apocalypse is bad?
Amy told him that Blaze's world would end in more general terms and it took him at least three Sadboy Glances(tm) to get over himself.

"Shadow isn't always an aggro douchebag, look at all these times where he was slightly chill for three seconds in a row! Sure there are just as many if not more examples of Shadow being a raging knob, but I personally do not like those instances and therefore I am going to say they were bad writing and ignore them in favor of the reading of his character that personally appeals to me more!"
What is it about Shadow that makes people be trippin so much? lol
How hard is it for people to just wrap their heads around the idea that Shadows chemistry is different with everybody? He has a MUTUAL competitive relationship with Sonic BECAUSE they have just as much in common as they have differences. Rouge is probably the most trustworthy person in Shadows life currently but it's more like they're co-workers than friends. Amy seems to be able to tug on his heartstrings and get him to do whatever she wants with her earnest personality even while he acts all tsundere about it. Ect.
The way Shadow is isn't mutually exclusive, but folks seem to want to just disregard interactions they don't like because they're different from interactions he has at other times under different circumstances. If your view of Shadow requires trimming fat and going "yeah well that time he was being 'OOC' so I just ignore it" then maybe your view of Shadow isn't accurate.
>>me @ me: the damage is done. you've said your piece. do not drop the Even Spicier Take(tm)
>>me: instructions unclear, failed step one
Tbh, I didn't want to say this because quite frankly, I didn't know how to word it in a way that wouldn't come across as though I was passing judgment since that's not my intention. But… ever since Shadow dropped that "go help your teammates" line in Sonic Forces Overclocked, this general notion has percolated in the back of my mind...
...Well. I think this idea of Shadow as modern fandom conceives him is... made up. And that's the lightest way I can put it.
Over time, I've come to suspect that fandom's constructed this mental image of Shadow as a noble protector archetype, soft-spoken and who always strives to fulfill his duty, and they've become quite attached to it to the point of rejecting other aspects of his character… like the pettiness and the bullheadedness.
It's possible the reason for the backlash against Sega's current portrayal is because the image doesn't match reality. His canonical pettiness chafes against the grain of who he "should" be. I'm not sure how well I'm explaining myself, but I hope the sentiment is received in the spirit in which it's intended.
That's not to say the archetype or the better parts of his personality are necessarily wrong in every circumstance (mandatory disclaimer that I am speaking in generalities and am not personally knocking your fic), but rather, insisting that noble side is all he is and lumping the less palatable traits under that umbrella paints an incomplete picture of his character. Although nobility and pragmatism do inform important parts of his character, they aren't his only traits.
It's like if people took umbrage with Sonic saying "I have no master except the wind that blows free." What, precisely, is there to take umbrage with? If part of the character's personality rubs you the wrong way, that doesn't necessarily have to indicate OOCness, especially when the character is supposed to be an anti-hero.
I have no legit idea what folks even mean by "Vegeta!Shadow" anymore because, for one thing, never watched DBZ, and for another, he gets slapped with the label regardless of his behavior. I can't isolate the offending variable because there doesn't seem to be one, aside from "Sega sucks." Forces!Shadow is relatively chill but still Vegeta!Shadow because Reasons. Flynn fucks up issue 19 so therefore his portrayal is evidence that Sega wants Vegeta!Shadow, because that's how logic works I guess. Shadow goes on vtube and his rivalry with Sonic gets acknowledged? Vegeta!Shadow. Like, is there no sense of scale or degree with which people apply the label? These are three different portrayals. I don't understand.
Obviously I don't want to be all "you must have a high IQ to understand Shadu Le Hedgehog(tm)" because that's very not much the message I want to convey. Lol and lmao I would be so far up my own ass if I did.
But it is interesting how discussing him specifically results in particular problems of communication. The issues with discussing Shadow appear to be that A.) folks tend to think your personal opinions and gripes are indicative of those of all Shadow fans AKA the SA2 fan problem, and B.) you're always going to miss some nuance that someone else is going to point out, and sometimes you have to decide to take the L for the sake of conserving energy.
I've written about his character at length, sometimes embarrassingly so (he rotates in my brain like a TV dinner. hehe Shadow go brrrr). And I think anyone who follows me at this point knows my attitude on Shadow is always changing in subtle ways, because there are as many ways of looking at him as there are facets of his character.
On the other hand… I get that people flanderize him, and his multiplicity can be difficult to capture in the limited space a post can permit. But also, there are times where I'm tired and can't English(tm) and I just don't feel like including footnotes every time I'm like "hehe Shadow's kind of an asshole <3," you know what I mean? It should go without saying that Shadow's character allows enough berth that "hehe Shadow's kind of an asshole <3" does not inherently preclude those moments where he's not-an-asshole. Or less-of-an-asshole. Whichever. You know what I mean.
Despite being frustrated with fanon, I'm not trying to pass indictment and say This Is How Shadow Ought To Be Characterized Forever. Rather, I'm just expressing frustration at how fandom continuously refuses to accept the most baseline traits, like (checks notes) "annoyed by Sonic sometimes."
Like it or not, he does have some rough edges. It wouldn't be fair to sand down the bad boy side of Sonic, and indeed some subsects of fandom complain about its erasure. So why is it okay to do to Shadow?

Can you do an analysis on shadow's line in battle where he says "if the world wants peace they'll have to destroy us first" ?
Sorry for the delay; I'm pretty sure I've discussed this particular scene before but since Tumblr's search system is massively unhelpful, naturally I can't link you to the post. So we'll be looking at it again :P
This time I'll be relying on TheSinnerChrono's transcript of the game instead of screenshots because this post would otherwise become way too long and unruly. Here's the link:
Sonic Battle - Game Script - Game Boy Advance - By mtkennerly - GameFAQs (gamespot.com)
---
First thing to note is that Shadow is experiencing a lot of internal conflict about being a weapon of war vs. being an autonomous being with a heart and mind of his own.
The way this conflict presents itself is via stubborn denial for much of his story. Shadow tends to reject emotion for the most part, considering it weakness, but for a few notable exceptions.
Tumblr media
When he encounters Sonic for the first time, Shadow's story noticeably omits his demand that Sonic hand over Emerl and the ensuing fight, in the usual Rashomon style these Adventure-era games tend to tell their stories with.
However, Sonic's "He's at Tails' place" and "Why are you after him, anyway?" imply this is not the first time he's pursued Emerl. I would argue that this omission fits Shadow's general trend of denial.
What we get from here is an interesting back-and-forth between Sonic and Shadow about the Chaos Emeralds, the Gizoid, and whether "weapons" have hearts.
I find this conversation interesting, and not just because it's the polar opposite of the scene in IDW 6. It's interesting in that it's a rare occasion where Shadow and Sonic bandy words without devolving into a physical fight, and those words furthermore tackle some pretty heavy concepts of identity, power, and war.
Especially war.
Tumblr media
Battle's anti-war message is about as subtle as a tire iron to the face. While SA2 only alluded to cultural fears of WMGs with its hint-dropping about the development of the Eclipse Cannon, Battle takes the ball and runs with it, making not only Emerl but Shadow question their very identities as instruments of destruction. And then furthermore has the other characters wax poetic about it.
Worth noting as well that Sonic's insistence that Shadow has a heart matches Shadow's vehement denial of that very concept, leading to a stalemate where Sonic surprisingly relents Emerl. Shadow wore him down with his angsty emo shit lol.
Tumblr media
The stark difference in Sonic and Shadow's mindsets becomes clear when you consider their word choice. Shadow strictly calls Emerl's power "power," while Sonic calls the power bestowed by all seven Emeralds "unlimited energy":
Shadow: "Right now, its true power lies dormant."
Sonic: "I've heard that he who collects 7 'Chaos Emeralds' will be granted unlimited energy."
To Sonic, this energy is morally neutral. It is not inherently destructive. His wording reflects not only his thinking, but his personal experiences in wielding Chaos Emerald energy for good.
Shadow, however, deems the pursuit of power an inherent path to ruin, tainted by mankind's thirst for war. As a living manifestation of that desire - or so he thinks - he insists on dehumanizing himself. Numbing the part of himself that feels and cares is the only way his conscience will stop screaming at him.
Tumblr media
As has been pointed out numerous times before, this scene directly contradicts the moment in IDW 6 where Sonic brings up Shadow's past sins in order to win the argument about Mr. Tinker:
Tumblr media
Instead, we have Sonic arguing for Shadow's heart, as well as the idea that Shadow once acted for the good of humanity and can do it again.
The real irony here is that Battle!Sonic is actually being a little bit of that bleeding-heart "everyone is good deep down" moral champion IDW fans think IDW!Sonic is, what with his whole spiel about "if you have a heart, there's no way you could use your power for the forces of evil."
The important caveats to keep in mind, however, are that:
A.) Sonic has seen proof of Shadow's heart for himself; he doesn't make his argument despite a lack of evidence, unlike Eggman, for whose supposed "goodness" he struggles to think of a single example. He clearly states "Maybe you've forgotten, but I seem to recall you saving humanity at some point." So his argument is not just him blowing flower petals up Shadow's ass - it's grounded in fact. Whether or not Shadow wants to face those facts lies on Shadow.
And B.) Sonic is probably waxing poetic this hard because Shadow's being equally stubborn in insisting that he's just a tool of destruction. His self-dehumanization, in fact, appears to disturb Sonic in a way we seldom see in other games:
Tumblr media
Sonic suggests Shadow and Emerl play some games together. Shit's probably getting too heavy for him and he's getting freaked out, in addition to simply wanting Shadow to wisen up.
Shadow regularly says stuff like "Weapons have no need for a conscience" and "There's no need for a weapon to have feelings," and it's clear the so-called "weapon of war" doth protest too much. He wouldn't be pointing out the folly of Real Boy Feelings(tm) if on some level he wasn't suffering the cognitive dissonance of having them. His disgust at Emerl acknowledging his own capacity for feeling joy and friendship at the end of his story pretty much confirms this.
But even more interesting than that is his dour outlook on humanity: he feels it's a given that mankind must destroy the instruments of its own destruction if it ever wants peace. That it's a weapon's fate to be used and discarded precisely because, in his misanthropic view, humanity is foolish, belligerent, and greedy:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, despite Shadow's brooding observations, the scene ends on a lighthearted note, with Sonic laughing "Some ultimate weapon you are!" in Emerl's wake:

actually I'm old enough to remember when Gens coming out was a huge deal because it was the first time we got to see Classic Sonic in 3D, and the idea of revisiting old levels was a novel concept back in 2011. people were really hyped over it
I have fond memories of it being the game my parents gave me as a high school graduation gift <3
