ff7 headcanon vignettes
in which aerith is tired of zack's adorably insufferable shyness when it comes to actually making a move
august [ ν ] - εγλ 0001
They’re jumping into a fallen reinforced concrete pipe to shake him, like it’s a slide at the park—which, all discarded things considered, it is. Sector 5 is a playground of topside rubble and trash, repurposed debris, and Zack’s hand is in Aerith’s and she’s the line leader. Hide and seek with Tseng is nothing new, just that Tseng never knew the rules changed or that today Zack is playing, too. He swings Aerith half onto his lap so she won’t ruin her skirt, skids them to a stop with the heels of his SOLDIER boots just before the pipe ends and a bad fall would begin. She has her arms around his neck, clinging. He has his arms around her waist, clutching. Both are choking back sounds of thrill lest they give away their hiding spot. Silent whispering, instead. Mouthing: Close call! Nice save! Nose to nose, wide- and wild-eyed, flushed and flustered. Across the way, a potato sack snagged by twisted metal whips in the wind like a flag. Aerith can feel her heartbeat on her tongue. She grabs Zack’s face and he goes, “Huh?” and on his half-open mouth, she plants her own. Zack breathes in sharp through his nose. He smells like running in the sun and something else earthy-sweet, distinctly him. Aerith doesn’t see when he closes his eyes, too, but certainly it’s just before he’s kissing her back. The Cetra told an old, old story, that a soulmate was part of one’s life force that had been bottled and sent away, and all the time you spend alive, you’re just following its call home.

thinking about that post of people assuming ao3 has an algorithm and also about how bonkers persistent the view is that ao3 is social media lite. like with startling regularity I get comments saying something along the lines of "it's probably weird to comment on a fic this old--" no it isn't!!!! this is an archive I am literally just assuming you searched for a selection of specific tags or sorted by kudos or looked back on my pseud or any other number of completely normal ways to use an archive site ?? kill the tiktok ghost in your brain and comment on old stuff it's NOT weird

EVERY SINGLE DAY there are MILLIONS of characters in their late 20s who get falsely accused of being father figures to teenagers when in reality the description of "weird older cousin" or "step-sibling that moved out before you were born" is 1000000x more apt

people telling you they reread your fic is the biggest compliment you could ever receive. there are thousands of stories out there begging to be found, to be explored, but your story meant so much to someone that they came back to it eagerly, they went over every word again. to love is to return and loving a fic is rereading it. thank you to all readers and rereaders <3333

Far worse, in my opinion, than the famous “he wouldn’t fucking say that” is “he WOULD fucking say that, as part of his facade, but you seem to think he would mean it genuinely”

love at first sight april [ ν ] - εγλ 0001
It happens like this—love, that is: a crash, then sunshine. Angeal, the war is over.
A church, a girl.
It isn’t a playground rhyme, but it sure is like one. Hands clapping, laughter scintillating. Jump-rope games in Gongaga sun. Little girl, little girl, go upstairs; little girl, little girl, say your prayers . Little boy, little boy, get your Shinra employee number; little boy, little boy, now you’re a man (a monster). Boys become men and some men get woven with mako, and these mako men survive crash landings into flower beds from heights higher than there’s any business surviving. It had to have been the flowers.
Feathers.
“Hello?”
Maybe, Zack will end up wondering one day, she wasn’t ever afraid of him at all, then afraid of exactly that.
What do angels dream of?
When she turns, hands behind her back, her hair whips russet brown and shot through with gold in the sun, as it pours in through the jagged teeth of the place he’s just fallen from. “Aerith,” she says. It’s her name. Is he OK?
He’s Zack. He’s OK. (And he is, actually, in the moment; he’ll feel it later, and it’ll be gone in the morning.)
He says something stupid, of course, because it’s his specialty. Girls from Corel, they get along so well, boys from Junon, they always do things wrong . She tells him it’s stupid, and her laughter scintillates. Girls from Midgar, they never see the stars, boys from Gongaga, they — Clap clap clap, jump. A date…?
“Don’t step on the flowers!”
Zack never wonders why it seemed so easy, so possible—to just reach out and tuck loose hair behind her ear. There’s not much to wonder about. A crash. Sunshine.

Reblog for a larger sample size!
No "show results", if you're not a fanfic writer just be patient.
I saw a post about an anon saying it was embarrasing to have an ao3 account in your 30s (it's absolutely not), so I want to do a poll and see what the age range actually is.

Ao3 is actually massively culturally important and very very good at being what it is. I’m so serious when I say that ao3 needs to be protected as the anti censorship, by fans for fans, nonprofit, volunteer run, expertly designed archival site that it is. You don’t have to read or like fanfiction to understand that on principle, ao3 is a site that should be defended.
