What do you call that stage of depression when you've been a published author for 13 years, but in the last year more and more bookstores have been scared to order your books, thanks to the new Hungarian anti-lgbt laws, and now you make less than you used to?
Tumblr media
Always wanted to help with my stories. Never to hurt. And somehow I'm being punished because of these goddamn laws. Lucky to say that I have amazing readers. But still.

When fighting for lgbt rights in the European Parliament, do it in Ed Teach colors. (I swear it's purplish, ok?) I got to meet amazing people who are fighting the good fight, and I spoke about the effects of the anti-lgbt child protection law in Hungary. Loved it!

Let me explain why Jojo Rabbit means a lot to me.
They made the film at a time when everyone wanted to be a Nazi again. That's what Taika said. It was a good reminder for us all.
I wrote a book in 2018 with the same intention in mind. It's about a weird Hungarian neopagan guy who's completely misunderstood and is taken for a neo-Nazi.
I think that says it all.

How to get ahead in life? With visualization. Imagine it, work it out in your head, see it all before your mind's eye as a clear picture, plan ahead, think it over, shape it. Then get to it.

I got an email today that might just be a game changer in my writing career. I'm speechless. I'm frightened. I'm not OK, while being extremely OK at the same time. Feeling like I was just pulled into a parallel universe. Ohmygod.

A guide to my novels
For my followers who might not have a clue about what sort of stuff I have bled out of my soul and fingers so far. All of these books have only been published in Hungarian. Should that situation ever change, then please find me ridiculously drunk in a comfortable sitting nook.
Tükörlelkek 1-2. (Mirror Souls 1&2)
Tumblr media
A young adult duology telling the story of two very different teenage girls: the most popular girl in school, Kriszti, a smart, beautiful dancer, and the uncontrollable, rebellious rocker, Orsi. Two parallel romance stories showing the everyday struggles of Hungarian teens.
My most known work, and a compulsory reading in many schools.
Bolyongó (Wanderer)
Tumblr media
The story of 19-year-old Norbert, a somewhat modern viking, a follower of Germanic neopagan faith, and an outsider in his town and in school. While trying to finish his studies, he falls in love with an atheist girl, who helps him overcome his demons emerging from his childhood.
The Hungarian IBBY student jury’s choice as best young adult book in 2019. Read an excerpt in English here (pages 12-15).
Rúnatánc (Runedance)
Tumblr media
24-year-old Norbert, a neopagan wanderer living in Berlin at the time of the pandemic, trying to come to terms with his feelings on the anti-vaccination movement and the Russia-Ukraine war, while exploring Berlin with his ex-girlfriend and facing a new, scarier world.
Helena-trilógia (Helena trilogy)
Tumblr media
A fantasy romance set in Oregon, USA about an 18-year-old orphan living by the rules of a menacing monster within her, as she meets three siblings with healing powers, one of whom she falls in love with. She discovers her suppressed powers given to her by Mother Nature, and fights for survival in the time of the climate crisis and human destruction of nature.

Made this originally in Hungarian for my readers, because the protagonist of 'Bolyongó' happens to be a long-haired, tattooed, kinda soft motherf*cker as well.

Two years ago in January I was working on a book about a Hungarian neopagan "viking" guy's adventures in Europe, when I heard that something terrifying was boiling in Russia and in Ukraine.
I stopped writing for a while.
And realized that I wanted to write about the invasion.
Not specifically about the invasion of Ukraine, rather about its effects that rippled through the youth of Europe. I was extremely angry with the reaction of Hungary, meaning our government. They do NOT represent how all Hungarian people feel about the war in Ukraine.
I was torn for days whether to even start the rewrite, for this subject had to be approached very carefully. I wanted to show how young people of the EU became part of the fight through social media. I made the Hungarian protagonist living in Berlin one of the leaders in this fight.
I felt like I had to do my part, and my part as an author was to explode from the grief and shock and guilt I felt. I wanted to assure my younger readers that their confusion and sadness was valid, and that the trauma they have seen on social media needed to be processed.
Norbi, the protagonist of Rúnatánc (Runedance) has the Tiwaz rune tattooed on him, which, in his Germanic neopagan faith, represents Tyr, the god of war, justice and courage. The story is about his internal struggle caused by the anti-vax movement, the war, and his reappearing ex.
I guess I had to write these things down at last in English. Norbi wouldn't have gone far without his English knowledge and his international friends. And he is partly of me.

I spoke up against Hungary's anti-lgbt laws a few months ago in the media.
People threatened to spit on me at my next book signing.
Our Flag Means Death has been a safe space for me, where I feel truly free. Understood. Healed. I'll keep fighting for this show.

Scrolled all the way down to the first accounts I followed on Twitter back in 2009. I am an emotional wreck now. Just like back then. And that's okay.

Wrote a couple of letters, and now we have our first Hungarian article on the SaveOFMD campaign. It may be short because they basically only copied my letter, but give them a couple of clicks as a thank you!

I've been here for over a month now, so: a bit of an introduction then.
My name is Dóra, I'm from Hungary. I'm 32. I write books. Been a bookworm since I was 8 and been writing since I was 13.
Got into My Chemical Romance at the age of 15. Gerard and the gang kindly showed me that "art is the weapon, your imagination is the ammunition" and I'd like to think that I haven't strayed from that path since then.
Fed my braincells with Tolkien and Gaiman throughout my teenage years.
My first novel was published in Hungary when I was 19.
Got a degree in American studies. Wrote my thesis on stereotypical portrayal of witch characters in contemporary American literature, focusing on GRR Martin's Melisandre. I'm so obsessed with the topic of witch-hunts and the collective feminine trauma that stems from it that I kinda wrote a fantasy trilogy about it.
I've also written books about Hungarian neopagan vikings. Honored to have been chosen as the best Hungarian young adult author in 2019. I'm fascinated by outcasts and weird teens. Yes, I'm the writer who tells the story of the unhinged fun ones.
Yes, I'm obviously obsessed with David Tennant, why is that even a question?
Yes, I wish I'd started using this fantastic hellsite years ago. But I'm here now anyway - thanks to Neil Gaiman.
If you want to say hi or if you have questions about storytelling, books, or the situation in Hungary, I'm right here. Love y'all.
