Tolkien and long hair: what do the books say?
Any time Tolkien describes the length of Elves鈥 hair, it鈥檚 always said to be long:
- Glorfindel: 鈥楬is golden hair flowed shimmering in the wind of his speed鈥 (FOTR - Amroth:聽鈥楾he wind was in his flowing hair鈥 (FOTR) - Celeborn:聽鈥楾he hair of the Lord Celeborn was of silver long and bright鈥 (FOTR) - Elves even made bowstrings from their hair: 鈥楢 bow such as the Galadhrim used, longer and stouter than the bows of Mirkwood, and strung with a string of elf-hair鈥 (FOTR) -聽Celegorm:聽鈥楪olden was his long hair鈥 (The Lays of Beleriand) - The Elves of Valinor: 鈥榃ith their gleaming hair in the wind flying鈥 (The Lays of Beleriand); 鈥楾here blowing free unbraided hair is meshed with beams of Moon and Sun鈥 (The Lost Road) - The Teleri: 鈥榃ith their long hair gleaming like foam鈥 (Morgoth鈥檚 Ring) - Olw毛: 鈥楾he hair of Olw毛 was long and white鈥 (Morgoth鈥檚 Ring) - Thingol: 鈥楨lw毛 himself had long and beautiful hair of silver hue鈥 (The War of the Jewels) - Fingon: 鈥楬e wore his long dark hair in great plaits braided with gold鈥 (The Shibboleth of F毛anor) - And then there鈥檚 this quote which implies that long hair was seen as desirable among the Elves: 鈥楢ll the Eldar had beautiful hair (and were especially attracted by hair of exceptional loveliness), but the Noldor were not specially remarkable in this respect, and there is no reference to Finw毛 as having had hair of exceptional length, abundance, or beauty beyond the measure of his people鈥 (The Shibboleth of F毛anor)
But it鈥檚 not just Elves鈥擬en are also described as having long hair:
- Aragorn:聽鈥楬e threw back his hood, showing a shaggy head of dark hair flecked with grey鈥; 鈥楬is hood was cast back, and his dark hair was blowing in the wind鈥 (FOTR) - The Witch-king of Angmar:聽鈥楬is hair was long and gleaming鈥 (FOTR); in an earlier draft of the scene, Tolkien wrote that all the Ringwraiths had long hair: 鈥楿pon their long grey hair were crowns and helms of pale gold鈥 - Boromir: 鈥楾hey combed his long dark hair and arrayed it upon his shoulders鈥 (TTT) - The Rohirrim: 鈥楾heir hair, flaxen-pale, flowed under their light helms, and streamed in long braids behind them鈥; 鈥榃here is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?鈥; 鈥楾heir golden hair was braided on their shoulders鈥 (TTT) - Eorl the Young: 鈥楬is yellow hair was flying in the wind鈥 (TTT) - Th茅oden:聽鈥楬is white hair was long and thick and fell in great braids鈥 (TTT); 鈥楾he hair that flowed beneath his high helm was like snow鈥 (ROTK) - Men from the South:聽鈥楾hey have black eyes, and long black hair鈥; 鈥楬is black plaits of hair braided with gold were drenched with blood鈥 (TTT) - Faramir and 脡owyn:聽鈥楢nd so they stood on the walls of the City of Gondor, and a great wind rose and blew, and their hair, raven and golden, streamed out mingling in the air鈥 (ROTK); this would only be possible if Faramir also had long hair - T煤rin:聽鈥楩or his garb was of the wild woods and his hair was long鈥 (The Book of Lost Tales)
What about Maiar?
- Gandalf is described as follows: 鈥楬is long white hair, his sweeping silver beard, and his broad shoulders, made him look like some wise king of ancient legend鈥 (FOTR); 鈥楬is snowy hair flew free in the wind鈥 (TTT) - Even the Balrog is described as having long hair: 鈥業ts streaming hair seemed to catch fire, and the sword that it held turned to flame鈥 (The Return of the Shadow)
Interestingly, I only found a few instances of characters cutting their hair short, and all of them are women:
- L煤thien cuts her hair in The Silmarillion, although it does not say how short, but in The Lays of Beleriand, it says she 鈥榗ut the hair about her ears, and close she cropped it to her head鈥櫬 -聽V谩na cuts her hair too in The Book of Lost Tales:聽鈥楾here follows an account of how V谩na...cut short her golden hair and gave it to the Gods, and from her hair they wove sails and ropes鈥櫬 - In The War of the Ring, 脡owyn is described with shorn hair when she goes to war, although this was changed in the final version of ROTK:聽鈥業n the passage that follows, 脡owyn鈥檚 hair is described as shorn upon her neck鈥
In conclusion, long hair is clearly the norm in Tolkien鈥檚 books. No Elf is ever described as having short hair apart from L煤thien, and no mortal is ever described as having short hair except for 脡owyn in the rejected draft. If anyone should have short hair, it鈥檚 certain female characters, not male Elves. Fight me!
