“What did you say this was again?”

“Apple crisp—that’s what the humans called it long, long ago.”

Slender legs swung back and forth, boots brushing against the back of yours and leaving a refreshingly cool breeze in its wake. Every now and again her heel would bump into yours, but you didn’t mind or realize such until it nudged your foot out from where it was settled against the grass. One arm was wrapped over your shoulders and made itself home there, her opposite hand expertly fiddling with a fork that scraped against the metal tin before you. Zero Two had finally stopped the swaying that left your heart falling out of your chest in fear that she would get hurt, but that didn’t persuade the hand around her hip to move. In fact, she seemed to rejoice in the touch. Her touch was so new and unabashedly physical that it still took some getting used to, but you couldn’t say you didn’t like having the love of your life so close.

When she presented the offer to join her for a new snack she found after a disappearing act, you didn’t have a reason to say no. Zero Two looked so excited that you didn’t want to be the one to change that, even if your favorite activity was waiting for you elsewhere, so you agreed. Promptly ignoring Ichigo’s pointed and suspicious look as the two of you passed by, your girlfriend clasped your hand in hers and guided you out the front door, quickly ending up in the courtyard where a small table sat in the center with small decorations and cutlery top with a single chair pushed into it. She let go to gesture to it proudly, keenly watching every twitch of your expression and asking how you liked it. You stopped asking questions like “Where did you get this?” long ago, but she must have read your mind because she winked and pressed a finger to her lips.

You weren’t really sure what you were looking at when she slid you the most generous slice of...well, whatever this was. It wasn’t like anything you had seen before, and you briefly wondered if this was a food meant for adults. Your cluelessness must have been embarrassingly obvious because she started to giggle, laughter gentle on the ears and soft like wind chimes. It was round like a cake, but strangely flat, less squishy around the outside, and lacked any kind of frosting. There were some sort of golden brown crumbs along the top that made it difficult to see what was beneath it or what it was until Zero Two took a knife to it and plopped your piece in front of you. Slices of baked apples layered on top of one another slid out and were coated in some sort of golden syrup that was neither honey or what Zorome slathered on his pancakes.

She seemed to take satisfaction from your overall positive response because she dropped into your lap seconds after you sat down and started digging in herself.

“I have to say,” she started as she licked the sugar syrup from her fork. “I wasn’t much of a fan before, but I think I have a new appreciation for it!”

“Oh yeah? What made you change your mind?”

She peered down at you with an impishness she didn’t bother in trying to hide and you could only prepare yourself for whatever she had up her sleeves. She wrapped her other arm around you and abandoned the utensil with an unceremonious flick of her wrist, pulling you close until your chest was pressed against hers. Her breath washed over your skin and caused the hair on your arms to raise, a strange fluttering coiling within your stomach that you were still getting used to, like most concepts she introduced you to.

“Isn’t it obvious, darling? I’m eating it with you. Although...” Her free hand came up from the base of your neck and crawled up to your chin with a near ticklish touch, tipping your head upwards just a little higher. “Who’s to say I won’t eat you up, too?”

The intensity in her gaze caused you to stammer out a response—or try to, at the very least, but nothing came out coherent or comprehensible. Zero Two didn’t seem to mind, her impishness settled into something akin to prideful satisfaction as she flicked a lock of pink over her shoulder. You wondered just how truthful that question was, but you knew she wouldn’t actually do that. She tipped her head and let her eyes flutter, your noses brushing together. Assuming she was going in for a kiss, you leaned in to reciprocate it but you were met with empty air and your disbelieving eyes wandered upwards to her. She turned away and sat a bit straighter, but you could see the trembling of her lips that started to chip at her composure. She released your face and the two of you the same space as before, that was to say very little to begin with.

Zero Two knew what she was doing and that went without question, but she was busy cutting up another piece of her admittedly tasty snack to pay your lighthearted and ultimately playful glare much mind. If she noticed then she chose to ignore it. Instead and happily oblivious to any sort of self-restraint when it came to her snacks, she scooped up yet another generous helping of this apple crisp along the tongs and held it out to you with an infectious smile.

“Now, open wide, darling!”

She was absolutely flirting with you the whole time you were friends

And you were oblivious

Even used pet names with you

You just thought that's how she was with everyone

She wasn't going to be the one who asks you out either

She'd want the satisfaction of saying yes to you

So she was basically trying to see if you had any interest in her at all

And when she seen you did?

She started flirting even more

Just trying to make it obvious

Everyone thought you were already dating

You were confused

But after knowing that you did realized you liked Zero Two

You made her a small little flower headband

To put around her horns

Basically in replace of her normal one

You asked her out and gave it to her

She laughed and told you it was about time

She happily lowered her head to let you put the headband on her

And when she lifted her head?

She gave you a kiss and grinned

Laughed at your expression

You were blushing

But you were happy

The both of you were

She wasn't the one to confess first

While she may have had feelings for you?

She wasn't going to risk your friendship

Just in case you wouldn't feel the same

Or thought less of her somehow

She would always give you little gifts

Just to make you feel special while you guys were friends

And mainly just to show affection

Without it being obvious

Minus the flirting that you were oblivious to

Though one day you confessed to her

And you gave her flowers with chocolates

Giving something in return when you confessed

For all the time she's given you things

Overall she seemed really happy

Of course she accepted

She was confident and took you on a date right then and there

Probably to a restaurant

Or a nice walk along side the beach

Keeping it a secret or not and talking about many other things

Needless to say at the end of the day you were both happy

She keeps trying to build up the courage to ask you out

Despite her bubbly and happy attitude

It's obvious something is up

She's not good at hiding her feelings

She seems anxious and sometimes on the verge of tears

She's contantly writing down ideas in a notebook

On how to ask you out

And all the possibilities that come with it

One day you two were talking

And she was going to ask you out

She had made a cute little hair clip for you

Though when she tried to ask you out?

She started crying

Because she was worried you'd turn her down

And that she'd ruin your friendship

You comfort her for a while

Then ask her what's wrong

When she's finally able to speak?

She pulls out the little hair clip

And tells you she likes you

You of course accept

She seemed surprised though really happy at the same time

You lower your head for her

And she puts the hair clip in your hair

And you embrace eachother in a hug

And happily go on about your day together
