Is there anything about your new location (the terrain, the local culture, the physical sites, etc) that has given you a new perspective on regional events of the War of 1812?
This a wonderful ask, thank you! I have been mulling over how to answer it all day! This ended up getting so long I put it behind a cut (I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT THIS).
Tumblr media
The Maumee River, as seen from Fort Meigs Historic Site.
One thing new in my life is a heightened awareness of important rivers facilitating the movement of trade, supplies, and settlement. Particularly in the Old Northwest/current Midwest of the USA: regions that I grew up perceiving as a land-locked "flyover country."
Like, to give one example, I had a vague idea that there was a city called Fort Wayne, Indiana, but I thought it was just in the middle of a cornfield for no reason(?). But actually it's at the confluence of the St. Joseph, St. Marys, and Maumee Rivers, leading to the Great Lakes! The strategically important location is why General Anthony Wayne—that guy again—built the original fortification in 1794. I am downriver of all of this, connected to many inland waterways.
I also have a keen sense of living in the Great Black Swamp, despite how dramatically the land has been transformed by deforestation and drainage. There are the terrifying drainage ditches everywhere (the locals seem less perturbed by them), and many other signs of the natural state of the terrain—the swamp is just barely at bay. My coworkers have said "Black Swamp" unprompted in our conversations; I've seen it mentioned in local Facebook groups talking about the need for back-up sump pumps. The idea that people of northwest Ohio have no sense of history and are unaware of the Great Black Swamp isn't true at all.
I look at the pools of water that form in every hollow and think of the words of Alfred Lorrain, marching to Fort Meigs:
We had frequently to pass through what was called, in the provincialism of the frontiers, "swales"—standing ponds—through which the troops and packhorses which had preceded us had made a trail of shattered ice. Those swales were often a quarter of a mile long. They were, moreover, very unequal in their soundings. In common they were not more than half-leg deep; but sometimes, at a moment when we were not expecting it, we suddenly sank down to our cartridge-boxes.
Swale is a new word in my vocabulary, and now I see them everywhere!
Culturally, I think there is a great appreciation of history here: a very positive difference from the Chicagoland area. Even if the average local is probably not deeply into it, they have a consciousness of major historical events that have shaped their region and take pride in it. It's a lot more like New England that way.
Because of my focus on the War of 1812, I notice the absence of Indigenous people and voices—absent from historical accounts and from the demographics of Perrysburg and its environs today. I can't single out Ohio as being a uniquely violent settler-colonial state when this is ALL of the United States; but it hits different when I have this much greater familiarity with who was forcibly removed from this land, and how. The same US military leaders who fought in the War of 1812 were behind the (very much related) campaign for the removal of Native Americans from newly acquired territories, including the infamous Trail of Tears.
Once again, it's probably hypocritical for me to notice this so much, when I literally grew up on Wampanoag land where King Philip's War was fought, but here I am. Suddenly aware of General Wayne's name on everything, etc.
Tumblr media
General Wayne's spurs in the Fort Meigs Museum. Not pictured: the can of Maumee Bay Brewing Co. Fallen Timbers Ale that I am currently drinking.
I haven't had the chance to explore physical sites with historical significance beyond Fort Meigs and Fallen Timbers. I know I will get to the ruins of Fort Miamis soon, and I really want to explore a lot of wetlands in local parks and nature preserves (that will double as birdwatching excursions). I am always thinking about what this place looked like 200 years ago, and what I can see today that might still look familiar to a person from that time.
I had a great trip to the National Museum of the Great Lakes today, which is closer than I thought! Local maritime museums are also on my agenda, even if they're not specifically War of 1812-related.

Any Valerie Gray headcanons?
Ohohoho now where did I put that soapbox...
Valerie eventually has to come to terms with her own ghostly nature. She has been imbued and empowered by nanobots and ectoplasm, and even when she isn't using any of it, she is different now
Technus is capable of mind controlling Valerie. Fortunately, he is stupid. He doesn't think to do so for a very long time, and it's obvious the moment he does
They never actually figure out how to prevent technus from controlling her. But thankfully he never gets good at it. Instead, he learns to fear being beaten like a pinata by teenagers
Eventually, the GIW is able to pick Valerie up on their sensors due to her super suit living under her skin
Valerie is not a halfa. She doesn't have ghost powers. To any ecologists, she seems highly contaminated and likely overshadowed.
Any attempt or even success in removing the ectoplasm and nanobots from her system will kill her.
Valerie was that kid who never missed a day of school even if she had the flu and everyone would have been safer if she had stayed home. Being sick just makes her stubbornly determined to persevere.
(Valerie stays home from school the day she realizes the anti-ecto acts apply to herself)
If Valerie were to ever come into contact with blood blossoms, she would feel pain within her entire body, followed by muscle spasms as if being jolted with electricity, and—with prolonged exposure—sores would open on her skin and start leaking ectoplasm.
Blood blossoms alone wouldn't kill her, unlike Danny. But they would weaken her immune system enough that something else likely would.
Valerie eventually develops a sort of sixth sense for electromagnetic fields
If Danny transforms into a human and keeps a lid on his powers, he can hide from the GIWs sensors. Valerie can never hide.
Valerie's eyes are opened to her own behavior toward ghosts after the GIW treat her as subhuman.
It's not Danny who saves her. It's Sam Manson.
Valerie's dad and Sam's parents work with the teen girls as they spearhead the ecto rights movement. Valerie becomes a figurehead. She hates it, but she hates the GIW more
Eventually when Valerie joins team Phantom, she learns that Tucker has been able to track her location using her nanobots this whole time
The more she learns about Danny's weird friends, the more she comes to respect them
Hey friendship with Sam is frightening to behold. The bond over the destruction of their enemies
She doesn't touch romance with a ten-foot pole, and is thankful nobody brings up feelings. Team Phantom have flashes of rage or betrayal or yearning, usually followed by an awkward silence. But mostly it's because they're low-key being hunted by the government
(Publicly, the government isn't hunting them at all. They strike indirectly, or when ghosts can take the blame. They place substitute teachers in Casper High, which is always badly understaffed. It's a strange cold war.)
Valerie never has the problems with controlling her nanobots that Danny did his powers, but sometimes her reflexes get the better of her.
Valerie would rather get angry than cry
She almost shot her dad once when he tried to wake her up from a nightmare. She bawled for two hours while he held her
Valerie sees herself as an adult after becoming a ghost hunter. She occasionally doesn't see Youngblood bc of this
She's honestly such a daddy's girl tho it's kind of embarrassing. If Young blood tried to sneak up on her while she was with him, he would immediately be spotted
Valerie never becomes one of the popular kids again, but rises above it all. She's the kind of powerhouse of a girl that kids part like the red sea to get out of her way
She doesn't become a leader so much as a linchpin of teenage civil disobedience
She knows everyone in Casper High. She has their phone numbers. She has their secrets. And she knows most have been trained with Fenton Blasters and are willing to use them
With a single mass text that the GIW is cornering Phantom, a flood of teenagers takes to the streets for their hero
Valerie isn't the leader of a teenage militia. But isn't not NOT a leader iykyk
Valerie eventually develops an affinity for controlling technology
Technus decides that she is his daughter
It's like a much less dangerous version of the relationship between Danny and Vlad
He still wants to take over the world but also considers himself to be a good father who does not fight his daughter
Team Phantom can recruit him as an ally
As an unrepentant daddy's girl, Valerie is filled with unquenchable rage at the presumption of this undead weirdo
Technus might have tried challenging Valerie's dad if team Phantom didn't keep gaslighting him that he couldn't tell humans apart "omg Technus that's not even her dad. He has a completely different eye color"
Valerie accidentally activates the nanobots inside of Jazz. They can't do all of the things that Valerie's does, but between the two of them, they figure out how to strengthen her, as well as make her immune to overshadowing
Nanobot buddies:)
Tucker is a mite envious
Dani is the little sister Valerie always yearned for; she feels like a partner in crime and like her baby girl all at once.
Jazz is the big sister she never wanted
Danny will never feel like a brother tho lol
Valerie and Danny have solidarity in helping each other avoid therapy with Jazz
All of their parents (except her own dad) trust Valerie implicitly for some reason. "Well if Valerie's there then whatever you're doing is okay" kind of deal
It baffles, outrages, and amuses the trio, bc Valerie is just as bad if not worse
Valerie is a force of nature
Valerie will continue to hone her ghost hunting abilities. Not bc she hates ghosts; to protect the ghosts closest to her heart
Bc Vlad Masters is the real monster, and he is escalating. Someday, someone will have to put him down. And he's already in her sights.

The sheer exhilaration of talking people into buying Gideon at my bookstore... It's been years and it's just as exciting every time. Talked a pair of people into it today and they're gonna book club the whole series and I am both so excited for them and also feeling like an anime villain

Taliyah can hardly contain herself. She'd been certain that the world's cuteness potential peaked with goats. But this fluffy, hoofed, horned, winged, shiny little creature is rearranging her world order. She pets its mane, and her eyes sparkle with instant, unconditional love. There's only one thing she can say, and she can only squeal it: " Let. Me. Hug you! "

Oh but what a fascinating lady came to her! She smelled like one of the people from the south, but those rarely enter the metal city where he was in! Regardless, he couldn't process that right now as he was receiving MOTHERFRICKING PATS.
He remembers what mom taught him, does a small little vow, then leans against Taliyah's legs and nuzzles.
Hug request accepted!

so i keep seeing homestuck mentioned. im gonna ask. what is homestuck??????? (like ik its a web series and was popular in uhhhh the 2010's but aside from the candy corn horns idk anything else. something about a hive swap? idk man help me out gio
Homestuck is a story of a kid and his friends and a game they play together :)
and oh man i can't believe i googled this pic in the year of the lord 2022 but. alas.
Tumblr media
yes this is going under read more
OKAY FIRST OF ALL TECHNICALLY SPEAKING?
it's a webcomic except not really. the way it's written is heavily based on old text-based adventure games, with a few panels with art and everything else written underneath, either from the point of view of a narrator or with chatlogues/dialogues of the main characters the comic also has some animation (or "flashes"), some occasional minigames and RPG-like games and songs, some of which made by toby fox
and yes i'd argue that a lot of things in HS aged poorly or weren't well written from the very start but the songs are literally all bangers. like even if you don't follow homestuck i cant not recommend the songs a LOT of stuff was really a product of its time too. like there's a lot of lolrandom humor, occasional jokes that would likely not fly rn that while can be excused with "these are 13 years olds and also like all them is canonically dealing with internalized homophobia, undiagnosed mental health issues or both" some parts really aged like milk
the entire plot is divided in 7 acts, with sub-acts and intermissions between each one of them to "divide" the story in chapters. like the first one is all "outside" the game the, the second introduces more characters, act 5 is the best one, act 7 is only the final flash to conclude the entire story
...and yes okay the story is, again, about a kid and his friends and a game they play together. basically on the 13th of April 2009 best boy John becomes 13 years old and recieves a game to play with his pals. It's a game that literally alters reality and that, once an item in the game is activated, summons a meteor. just roll with it this is how this universe works. "oh the gang needs to save the world then?" nah lmao the world is literally doomed their goal is to reach worlds spawned from the game, become gods, defeat the final boss and create a new universe
of course however things dont go as planned :)
all of this is explained approximately 1% into the whole story by the way
other than this, the kids are also dealing with a bunch of trolls from another world (the candy corn zodiac dudes), a bunch of NPCs from the game, alternate timelines, the literal goddamn author and lots and lots of death. Like HS is kinda infamous for killing of characters left and right. It has it's own set of rules to keep most of them relevant, like introducing ghosts, "dream" selves, the alternate timelines (Dave especially is SUCH a fun time he gets time-related powers and he gets to see SO many version of him dying :) ) or the whole way death works once the characters become gods, in which they can die only if their death is "just" (so if they were fucked up and evil and their death was justified") or "heroic" (so if they sacrifice themselves to protect someone, basically)
and. yes again homestuck isn't a story to take lightly, reading it requires a LOT of critical thinking, but it honestly has some of the best written kid protagonists I've ever read? Like with some duds of course *cough*gamzee*cough*act6vriska*cough*calliope*cough*, but most of them are really well fleshed out, with lots of flaws and good qualities, funny as hell, and for most of them their traumas and problems are integral part of their character growth - and yes while you get kind of used to see them die over and over have some of them Actually Die is. genuinely shocking and hurts so much?
like again shoutout to Dave but also Karkat because they start off as the "cool kid" and "angry kid" tropes and yet they get so much growth, learning to understand their limits and rationalizing traumas from the past. like the very last scene we get with Dave before the final battle is one of the best written pieces of media I've ever read
..........................................you just need to kind of. First of all pull a death of the author since they're kind of a douchebag and also remember that this started in 2009, likely with no intentions of making it a story as big as it ended up being. I don't think I would recommend HS to someone who "wasn't there" not for gatekeeping but specifically because. It's a product of it's time, and I think that if you finish Act 1 (in which basically nothing important happens, if not putting down the bases of the general tone) and aren't into it you likely won't likei t even when it gets so much better since
yes it's a story with very serious topics that WILL take seriously it's characters, but it's also a story that not only would drop everything from a page to another because the author decided to commit character assassination for his fav but. also one of the plot points is that the main villain of the first half went on a murder spree because he didn't want to dress like a clown. one of the plot points is that insane clown posse and guy fieri became presidents. one of the plot points is that the author has a crush on dante basco and rufio from "hook" is mentioned so many goddamn times. a plot point has buckets being used for reproduction. this is a canon line.
Tumblr media
so is this one
Tumblr media
and also it's a shame that they didn't do anything else afterwards :) that there is no hiveswap even if the kickstarter literally broke a lot of records :) that there is no epilogue :) that there is no sequel :) friendsim can stay but it's on thin fucking ice
TL;DR: homestuck is the most webcomic ever and also the ending was fine you guys are just mean

OKeyokey so you know I have been making Pokemon Designs for my Genshin fave characters so I will take this opportunity to talk about one of em! Shu is basically Chongyun obviously. I really wanted him be a Ice type and I decided on Glaceon in the end. I did think of maybe Alolan Vulpix to match with my Shenhe Alolan Ninetales but I love Glaceon so Glaceon I decided lol I used the tassels on Glaceon to make it look like his hoodie design with them fraped around his neck and I used different design elements of his outfit for Shu's markings! Just a bit more simplified ehe I think this design did turn out very nice!

I am turning EB around in my head like a microwave and I have a couple questions:
What is EB and EX's relationship like? I know they view each other as family and EX gets EB's booth, but will we see how they interact more?
Did anyone wind up telling EB that hels!zedaph is dead? If not, does he have suspicions that he is?
and a more general Hels question (that is totally not related no siree) - what is the upkeep for the remembrance walls like?
EB and EX are on friendly terms! They previously saw each other,,, not as rivals in the traditional sense. They didn't openly attack or oppose each other. But EB viewed EX as a challenge: How do I stay distinct from my brother's shadow? Anyone looking for it would find it obvious. EB got Bigger and Louder whenever EX was around, and he used to be much bigger and much louder than he currently is. It's less that he was mean, and more that he was prideful. Becoming friends with Helsknight changed him for the better in that regard. Since he's mellowed out, he and his brother have become closer. They enjoy visiting with each other during Colosseum matches [EB will often stand with EX in the box and talk both before the events, and during intermission] and EX invites EB to a lot of parties, where they shit talk the guests together. We'll see them together once during RnS, but EB is a secondary character, and outside of the one appearance, I don't intend to have EX very involved in the story. He's kind of the unspoken god of the world: he gets a lot of mentions because he's very important to hels, but he's not very important to the plot lol.
Someone did wind up telling EB about hels!zedaph, though yes, he did suspect before he was told. EB hadn't gone looking for HZ for a reason. He didn't want to be the one to find out he was gone. If I can't see it, maybe its not really there.
And the Remembrance Wall Ramble got long so its under the cut!
[Hello future me cutting in here because I just realized you were probably talking about what individuals like EB would do to upkeep a name of a loved one. Mostly it involves regular visits. Keeping the stone clean, replacing it if it gets cracked, making sure it doesn't wear down. Nether bricks to me are a bit brittle, and the ones on the bottoms of the walls will crumble and break down over time. Most of the time, the Order of Remembrance is pretty good at getting them replaced, though they encourage individuals to do it themselves, to decorate the stones, paint or carve them, and overall keep the care personal. People will also sometimes leave gifts of food, flowers, and favored items at walls where loved ones names are kept. Walls are very colorful spots in hels, full of a lot of care.]
The Remembrance walls are, basically, graveyards. Alongside friends and family, who will make sure loved ones names are put down and remembered, the Order of Remembrance manages all Remembrance Walls in the city. We'll get into it a little in the upcoming chapters, but the Order of Remembrance church, and its knights, have a very active presence in hels. They are the cloaks seen most often roaming the streets, in twos and threes. They have regular routes they walk, with walls they are assigned to tend. They make sure the stones are stacked straight and don't fall, replace broken ones, and help people carve names. Many knights have prayer chants where they intentionally try to memorize every name on the wall. Their focus is on the idea that no helsmet is truly gone as long as some memory remains of them. They welcome helsmets approaching them with fond memories of loved ones, and will take testimony from people who know their time is coming. Their church is a glorified library and house of memorization. Part of their worship in remembrance of people is also in the remembrance of history, and they have at least one copy of every book, memoir, and journal in hels they can get their hands on. They have one private collection in the church, and one public library in hels, which they regularly update with copies of originals from the church library.
The only place outside the Order of Remembrance's domain is the shady side of town where Cleo's gangs keep the peace. For control reasons, Cleo doesn't like any opposing force on her claimed land, which includes Order of Remembrance knights. She does still have Remembrance Walls on her side of town, but they are up-kept by the people that live there as a community project. People get together once every few weeks, make food, talk about those that are gone, and make sure none of the stones are broken or stolen.
Erasing memory is a big taboo in hels, understandably. The universe is already cruel enough in taking people, and people, once taken, are woefully easy to forget [they were never meant to exist in the first place, after all]. On the sides of town where the Order of Remembrance upkeeps the walls, anyone caught stealing or destroying stones is tracked down by their paladins, and subjected to community service under close supervision. They're often roughed up in the process, but the paladins won't kill you for breaking a stone. Depending on whose stone you break, and how angry hels is that day, the same can't be said for anyone else who catches you. Repeat offenders, or people who destroy many stones at once with the express intent of erasing memory, are branded by the Order with a mark somewhere visible, normally on the hands. Anyone with that unlucky brand will see increased hostility from their peers, ostricization, lost of livelihood and home -- it's a great way to make everyone in hels hate you. Anyone on Cleo's side of town caught destroying a stone is hunted actively in the streets, and leaving her side of town will not save them. She offers high bounties for that kind of thing.

ok those cove screenshots are too good and I've heard good things about him on other polls too so I'll bite. what is our life and where can i play it. are you or any of your followers willing to write up a short pitch on why you like the game? im like 1 small push away from looking into and/or buying it for real he looks so squiggly
OK SO Our Life is a free visual novel dating sim on Steam. There's DLCs but they're cheap and not obligatory to enjoy the game.
You're 8. You live near the beach with your moms and your older sister. There's no other kid around cause all the other people living there are old. And then one day a dad moves in in the house accross the street with his kid that's the same age as you. And the dad is like "I'll give you 10 bucks to be friends with my son". And without knowing it you end up inseparable with the boy as you grow up with him.
I absolutely love Our Life because it's one of the few dating sims where you can customize ever single aspect about yourself. Appearance? Check. Sexuality and gender? Check. Whether you know how to dance or like mayonnaise? Check. You don't want to romance him and just be his friend? Check.
It's really a cute childhood friends to lovers that made me cry more than once. The visuals and music are so pretty and it's so so heartwarming. It also really change from otome games where it's just drama after drama. This story is believable and you can really lose yourself in it, and not play as just some chick that's put into wacky situations. Just be yourself and kiss your cute neighbor that's also your best friend who loves you so so so much.

I hope this Scarian prompt is good: Sleepy avian Grian chirping and cooing at Scar to hurry up/stop whatever he's doing and cuddle in their nest immediately it is very important. Grian needs cuddles to fall asleep and by god if he has to ruffle some feathers he's gonna do it
“Scar,” Grian whines one night as Scar works on his plans for a new build project. It’s late, Scar knows that, but he’s just got this itch in his brain that he can’t ignore. The creative juices are flowing and there’s no way he’s going to intentionally dam them up. Nothing could drag him away from this right now.
Scar doesn’t look back as he continues sketching, distracted with how to angle the windows on the east side to let in the maximum amount of light. “What is it?” He asks, yawning immediately after.
“Come to sleep,” Grian mumbles, exhaustion lacing his every word.
“Grian, I have to finish this, or I’ll kick myself in the morning,” Scar replies. He feels a little bad about it, truly, but he’s often on the reverse end with Grian’s late-night insomnia-induced building, so Grian should understand.
“But I’m tired.”
“Then go to sleep?”
Nothing but silence answers him. Scar thinks that maybe Grian has fallen asleep but falling asleep so quickly is unlike him.
He’s just a little bit concerned when he swivels his wheelchair around so he can check on him.
“Gri?”
Grian is pouting and grumbling under his breath, feathers ruffled in annoyance or maybe anger or maybe sickness or—Scar’s getting ahead of himself.
“Sunshine, what’s wrong?”
“You won’t come to bed,” Grian says as if it explains his general state of discontent.
Scar sighs and sets his pencil down. “I will in just a little bit, love.”
“But I want to sleep now.”
“Why don’t you then?”
“I can’t sleep without you.”
Oh?
Oh.
Oh, wow. It makes perfect sense now that he thinks about it. Scar knows avians are flock creatures that form strong bonds and he knows that Grian never used to sleep well until they got together. He just didn’t know Grian thought of him as part of his flock. Oh, he could cry. He loves this man so much.
“Grian, have you pavloved yourself to only sleep when with me?”
“Shut up!”
“Oh my gosh, you have!”
“If you’re just gonna make fun of me then don’t bother,” Grian huffs and buried his face in his arms, angling himself away so Scar can’t see his expression.
Scar abandons his papers and wheels over to the side of the bed, locking his brakes and lifting himself on the edge, just outside of the nest.
“No, no, I think it’s sweet! You can’t fall asleep without me?”
“That’s what I said!”
“Gri, honey, look at me?” Scar grabs his arms and removes them from his eyes, gently, so Grian can stop him if he wants. Grian is teary when he meets Scar’s gaze.
“Don’t cry, love, it’s okay,” Scar shushes, wiping tears from Grian’s eyes and smoothing his thumb over his cheekbones.
“It’s just—I can’t sleep without knowing you’re safe and—”
“—the best way to do that is to cuddle me?” Scar finishes for him, grinning once again. Grian blushes but doesn’t deny it.
“Guess I can’t argue with that. Come here, pretty bird,” Scar whispers and draws his mate into his arms. Grian latches on like a barnacle and flops a wing over the two of them; out like a light as soon as he feels Scar relax.
Scar falls asleep to the sound of gentle coos and chirps, blanketed in soft feathers, safe in the arms of his love.
Flock is nice, is his last nonsensical thought before sleep claims him too.
