the struggles of writing smut (general edition)
repeating the same specific actions in one scene
too much descriptions
not enough descriptions
“does this position make any sense?”
stepping away from the computer/laptop/phone/notebook to try and re-enact an action to make sure it’s possible
“where should the hand go?”
on multiple partners: which limb is to go where again?
too much kissing
not enough kissing
how do I write the next kissing scene differently?
“is this even possible?”
spends hours searching for a synonym to replace certain anatomy/body parts after mentioning them too often
opening multiple tabs to do research on body parts and verbal sounds
doing research on various sex positions/toys/other things to be added into the story and then forgetting that we still need to WRITE
double checking the characters’ height differences to make sure that their positions can work

Phei of the Wind | Draft 3 Complete
Tumblr media
Hiya all~ It's been a while, but today I've finished the third draft of my fantasy novel Phei of the Wind. As many of you know I've been working on this novel for more than twelve years now, and this is the most definitive version I've ever made. It's still going to be revised and worked upon, of course, but most story beats have now been completed. It's composed of 29 chapters with a hefty 109000 words. I'm writing my thesis this semester, and I realised that I was so close to finishing that I couldn't think about anything else. So I went burn-out mode and wrote some 20000 words these two weeks, and now while I'm sitting in my eco-literature class (which is very interesting but my brain is too obsessed to stop writing), I've typed up the last few words.
So for those who have somehow missed me talking about this, it's a story about Phei, a halfling-harpy who lives in a world above the clouds. She is a priestess of sorts, and she notices that the world is slowly growing pale and empty. When she learns of a possible cause she runs away to the world below the clouds, the world where her people exiled themselves from. There she travels across the lands, figuring out not just what's happening to the world, but what happened to her people as well while meeting a cast of eccentric characters.
As in regards to the third draft, the biggest change is the endpoint. The previous draft ended at a point that made sense for a single novel, but would require another novel to tell the whole story. This new draft doesn't stop there. I shuffled around a lot of things and added some 40k words after that point. I wanted Phei's story to be composed of one big book. It doesn't mean that don't want to tell other stories in this world, but Phei's story is done when this book is done.
So what's next? I'm going to go through the entire book once, since I have a pile of notes that I thought of when writing this draft. And then I want to send the book out to a handful of beta readers. I'll send a post out for that tonight or tomorrow, so keep your eyes peeled if you're interested in that!
And lastly I'd like to thank you all for your nice comments and support! Every time someone commented something nice about the story it kept me going, so I think it may have taken a lot longer without all of you. <3
I'll leave you with a snippet (picking something that has no spoilers was haaaard), and hope you will all have a wonderful day!
xx
The wind causes Phei to lose her grip on time. Hours blow past as Phei glides, effortless. She knows of birds being able to sleep in the sky, and wonders if her people used to glide in their sleep too. Her dream quickly fades when she dashes to the right again, a sliver of upwards current catching her attention. Agile, yet absent-minded, she crosses past the forests until she can see the sands of Iekin edge towards the mountains, there where the narrow peaks and pillars of Sunde come into view. Without the stormy clouds Phei is able to take in the mountain in its entirety. It is a lonely mountain, imprisoned by the hundreds of spikes surrounding it. The evening sun shines over it, making the golden chains draping down all around the mountain glitter in sinful light. Glistering like that, Phei imagines the mountain as almost peaceful. It shows no sign of the great horrors that have been committed at its feet. It is like a passive observer, nothing more, nothing less.

everything begins with something inside of something else. a man in a woman , a child in a woman , a woman in a child , a man in a box , a girl in dreams. all round and round till everything blurs and your holding a person off the edge of themselves.
now our everything here begins with a boy in a house . a boy well aged - and sweeter than sweet. a lick of sugar so tender it melts your tongue to hold prayers at his feet. everything begins with something else inside. and this boy begins with a fear of teeth . of walls falling over to feel him till they get inside to hold him down.
everything is a lot to measure , but in the space of the boy and the house and its simply the way the house watches the boy. the way it wants to be a man to stuff itself into the boy like he sees on the dirty little shows the boy sneaks of to wet himself on.
so we enter on a set of players - the hunter and prey . a trap inside a person , ticking hunger down a night of wanton desire. here cannibalism lies sweetly to the side for everything begins when a need to devour the one you love arises. where everything begins with a boy in a wilderness that plays itself as a house. a cold thing with long limbs and secrets in every corner , peeling off the walls to sit itself in god.
as it goes everything begins with something else inside of it.

I feel silly that I get nervous before starting on big chapters, ones that are a little more important than the rest. That can be a gateway for procrastination and writers block, fighting the resistance can be hard, but that’s what it takes I think.
It’s easier for some writers

The Cat and the Murderer
(mentions of death, revenge, hints of violence)
The cat sat on the edge of the hole. An open wound in the earth too deep for the cat's paws to dig.
She sat with her tail curled demurely around her paws, gazing down into the space. It smelled of fresh clean earth and recent death.
She twitched her nose delicately, scenting the stirring current of air swirling around her, ruffling her fur ever so slightly.
She sat and she waited. The human would return. The one who had spent the last two hours cursing and throwing dirt from the hole, smelling of sour sweat and anger.
She had waited to find the human. Searching, sniffing them out. Deep into back alleys and far off fields. Patient and determined.
She remembered the first time she sat near a hole like this one. She had watched it being crafted. The human grunting and sweating, stopping to rub their lower back, glowering at the wrapped up bundle tossed aside.
"serves you right" the human grumbled. hitting the bundle with the shovel and going back to digging.
The cat watched the bundle being dragged and rolled into the hole, hitting the bottom with a thunk. Her nose twitching as the familiar scent of her protector, now smelling wrong, of fresh blood and urine and death. Wrapped carelessly and dumped into the hole. She had sat beside the hole when the human walked away to get something. Sat and watched and waited, then fleeing as she sensed the return.
Now here she was again. A new hole. This one empty, for now. She felt the ground vibrate and she made herself flat, digging claws into the earth, flattening her tail and her body, chin nestled in cool earth. Blending into the dark night and dark earth, her mottled fur a foil to human eyes, blending with the leaves and tossed up soil. She stopped breathing, and she waited.
The human came over the rise, carrying this new bundle huffing and sweating and muttering curses.
They didn't see the cat. The bundle was tossed aside as they prepared to dig a little more, and that's when they stepped on her. She came alive in a fury of flying fur and slashing claws, running up the nearest leg and across a broad shoulder, kicking and clawing at a joweled face, watery eyes, sinking her sharp little teeth into a fleshy cheek.
The human cried out in pain and confusion, flailing at their eyes and face. The cat was a blur, screeching her rage and sadness and loss. She leapt away as the human lost balance, and fell sidelong into the empty grave, hitting the ground with a satisfying thud that shook the earth.
The screams of cat and human attracted attention from other humans, far off but curious.
One by one a small group gathered, staring dumbfounded at the bundle, and the grave. From inside the hole there came a rattle, a dying breath.
Nearby, concealed by foliage, the cat groomed. Carefully chewing at her claws to remove blood and mud, stretching out her toes to clean between them, settling her ruffled fur and rapidly beating heart.
Her work is done.

Project Lock and Magi
This entire premise comes from the depressing genre of mature magical girl animes and Path to Nowhere.
Basically, magical girls -- or boys* -- (known as Magi or Magus in the singular) come about from certain circumstances. Their powers are awakened by exposure to magical energy, extreme emotional turmoil, being in the Prescence of a dying magi, or all three which will definitely awaken one's powers. The type of powers a Magus has varies from individual to individual but can be overall classified as:
Conjuring. The ability to summon items of a specific type (see Sayaka Miki and Mami Tomoe from Puella Magi Madoka Magika).
Manipulation. The ability to affect certain elements, materials, and in rare cases energy. These are your telekinetic individuals or “Benders” for an idea.
Amplification. The ability to enhance an aspect of his-*/herself. Whether it be muscle strength, intelligence, or endurance. (See Rinne Berlinetta from Vivid Strike**).
Summoning. Similar to conjuring except its living creatures instead of inanimate objects. If it moves on its own, it is summonable.
Control. Like Conjuring but instead affects more complex systems. these include living organisms, toys with moving parts, computers, etc.*
There might be more, but this is what I came up with so far. And while there are categories, each one is further subdivided by a specific type or how the magus in question uses said powers.
Now if you are wondering how that sounds a little overpowered. That’s because it is. Which is where Locks come in. Locks are the older male/female* counterpart of Magi with only one ability. What is that ability? To bond with a magus and control the intensity of her/his* powers. Locks are pretty rare, less in number than Magi, their powers manifest from emotional overload and/or discipline and even that happens after they passed twenty years of age, meanwhile a Magus will manifest at younger ages. Locks can control the intensity of said magus' powers through will and certain hand gestures (“Turning the valve”). When doing this gesture, a sigil will manifest in front of the Lock’s hand to indicate the power level he/she* is allowing. Said sigil is personalized by the Lock in question but is always easy to read and has scalable signs. Such signs include a circle of eyes with the ratio of opened to closed eyes indicating power level, a ring of padlocks doing similar, a rose bud in stages of bloom, etc. a “Chain” of similar aesthetic will manifest winding around the Lock’s arm when using his/her* powers.
Now a thing about magi. Their powers without a lock become uncontrollable and will continue to grow, think of a magus as a faucet, the water flowing through them is in constant flow and overtime the faucet will degrade until it breaks entirely. When that happens, the Magus will, in order:
Go crazy.
Lose control of his/her* abilities
Physically mutate.
At stage three they cease to be human and become a ravenous beast. Their mutations reminiscent of their former selves (e.g. a Magus with a Steampunk Aesthetic becoming a skeletal brass beast of gears and pipes with a Boiler in place of a heart). Untamable and destructive they are considered highly dangerous in the world. This led to the creation of organizations to stem the tide of such monsters. How they do this is by enforcing any recently awakened magi to be paired with a Lock, suppling the locks with weapons and armor to help accompany his/her* magi on the field, and provide tutoring and training for the nascent Magi.
The policies and sponsorship of these organizations vary. They could try to provide an emotionally supportive environment for both magical members, or they see them all as nothing more than tools/weapons that must be kept. they could be privately owned, or state funded. The less said about their reputations and the scandals, the better. *
Not to mention that most of these agencies also have a policy of making sure that the Lock and only the Lock survives no matter what. If the Magus the Lock is paired with dies, then it’s the equivalent of smashing a nozzle, messy but manageable. When the lock dies, then instead of experiencing the gradual increase of arcane energy, that unfortunate Magus will experience the pent-up force all at once, a dam being broken. Five out of five times this surge results in the Magus breaking. It is of these organizations' top priority that either the Lock survives, or that both die.
Such policies could also explain the existence of rogues. groups of Magi and/or Locks not aligned with any organization. At their worst, they are considered a bigger threat than the monsters.
All that said, there is a tendency for Magi to be females, while Locks are most likely to be males. but biologically male Magi and female Locks are not unheard of. though their appearances never fail to shock the rest*.
*Editions made thanks to NoMoreFsToGive.
** Its been a while since I first wrote this. I am no longer sure it is the case for her.

Nations on Sanghia: Nake'Pira
Nake’Pira: Current Ruler- Drah’harak Tiaman and his Court
Though more has been learned in the thirty years since their alliance with Rovai, Nake’Pira is still a nation with many secrets. Shrouded in the jungled oasis covering the southernmost tip of the continent and protected by a 100ft wall of flaming stone, few have ever set eyes on the nation. Reports and rumors suggest they pride themselves on culture and tradition, electing to wear slightly updated versions of ancestral garb and maintaining their spiritual customs. Worshipers of the legendary celestial dragon, Tira’Kah[6], Nake’Piran’s place profound importance on the stars and the world’s place among them.
Arguably the oldest civilization still alive today, it is said much of their history has been spent studying and mapping the heavens from their tall temple pyramids. On the field of battle, they have been described as ferocious and efficient beyond compare, and in trade they exude shrewd solemnity and mutual respect until such courtesies are not shown to them.
[6] Tira’Kah is said to have visited and mated with the earth of Alsahra, conceiving the first Ko’atl, aka Dragonkin.

Random writing thought. I feel like having extremely fleshed-out worldbuilding, with every nuance steeped in research and interconnected, is really thought of as the correct way to do fantasy because of Tolkien's influence. But I'm here to tell you that vibes are just as important, sometimes more important, than cohesive detailed worlds.

"main character should be relatable to your audience" WRONG. DEAD WRONG.
MC should be amusing to watch
like the most weird kitten in the litter, like your favorite fish in the tank, like that one branch on the tree under your window which always catches your eye, like a lone ant going somewhere away from its peers, like a bird building its nest from wires, anti-bird spikes and cigarette butts, like a passing cargo train with its assorted wagons covered in graffiti and markings, like moon reflection in waves formed by departing ship, like tall grass bending under heavy wind, maybe even like a carnival you suddenly stumbled upon while mindlessly strolling, or even like that construction site next to your home — like anything else what makes you think "shit, I really need to do a whole bunch of much more important stuff but I just can't stop looking".

the struggles of writing smut (series edition)
where were we?
going back to the previous chapter to see which room they were in
“…as he lifts her up and presses her against the wall”; previous chapter: they were on a bed
vice versa for this version: “she clenches her fingers around the bedsheets beneath her…”; previous chapter: they were in the living room
did this character give the other a nickname?
going back to the previous chapter to see if they’re naked yet
“…he rips her panties off her skin”; previous chapter: he already stole her panties
and vice versa for this version: “she falls breathless as she watches him smoothly taking his suit off and start unbuttoning his shirt…”; previous chapter: he’s already shirtless
when they’re climaxed/finished and the main/male character wipes his partner clean with his shirt that was tossed in the other room a few chapters ago
“…as he runs his fingers through her silky hair”; previous chapter: her hair is thick and curly

god cuts his stomach open to feed the angels one last prophecy - " man will not make it past the third day of my demise . " and he kneels into time , an old relic of something sweet - washed down by a carnal glazed fix of chance. god is fate and fate is sold to the highest bidder. who took the knife and slit his throat. preaching a new world divinity : god is machine , god is chance , god is i , god is you and so god is nothing at all. and god watches as time fills him with files. - and he slips his tongue over every misguide of this fraudulent prophet. tasting the bitter aftermath of a future that would bleed itself dry.
god takes out his eyes before he drowns, and leaves them with time to give to her child. time looks to them - broken hearted and gives them to her daughter, who puts them right into her mouth. swallowing whole - the nature of knowing . and time watches the eyes grow into roots to make her child a function of consequence . spreading her apart into thirds . the past that haunts , the present that wavers , and the future that believes.
the angles lament , they fall and they change . and even lucifer is crazed - for he only fell because he loved god and did not want to share. he pulls his wings out for he now had nothing to fly back and leaves a cesspool of dread in his steps over earth. raphael does not cure the plagues but briths new ones. holds her mouth so wide that she fills herself on the waters. leaving man parched with simper faced delight.
micheal takes the sword and kills himself. for if not for god there was no reason to guard man from sin and terror. while gabriel proclaims god's last words with such menace the world begins to cave. fate is god and if god is dead there is nothing to hold one up - for chance is a brutal bride that would oft take your head .

The Do's and Don't of Copyright for Authors
Tumblr media
Note: I'm not an attorney. I'm a business school dropout who hangs around a lot of attorneys (it's the hazard of being a romance author). If you are a copyright attorney and would like to correct me or chime in to add additional information PLEASE do.
Do Post a Copyright Statement At The Beginning of Your Book
The easiest way and cheapest way to claim copyright over your book is by adding a simple copyright statement at the beginning of your book. The moment you do that you are legally claiming ownership of your book. Here are some samples that you can use in your book.
Don't Use lyrics of songs or poems
I used to love using lyrics and poems in the chapter headings of my books. But those lyrics or poems are someone's else intellectual property and the moment use them (EVEN IF YOU CREDIT THEM) you have committed copyright infringement. The only way you can get around this particular rule is by using public-domain songs and poems.
I used a John Keats poem in the heading of my book 'Fall into You'. I could do that because Keat's poems are public domain.
Do Get Your Book Copyrighted
Another thing that you should do as an author is to get your book copyrighted through the U.S. Copyright Office. It only costs $50 and you will have a legal document with proof of your ownership of your book. This comes in handy when someone pirates your book and you need to prove to Amazon that you are indeed the copyright owner. It's real, legal, concentrate proof that your book IS YOUR BOOK without having to go to court over it.
Also, if you ever need go to court over your book and sue for copyright infringement? This will make your life easier.
Note: People outside of the United States need to check with their own government's copyright office.
Don't Use Celebrity Images For Marketing
I don't know about you, but I used to be a fanfic writer. And fanfic writers have a habit of using celebrities and models as their faceclaims. And that was fine because your were not getting any money for your story. YOU CAN'T DO THAT ANYMORE! No, don't get it twisted, you might get away with it for a while, but the moment you are using unlicensed images for profit you can get sued.
No matter how small an author you are. You are a business using someone's intellectual property without A) paying them for their labor and B) without the consent of the model and the photographer.
Do Use Stock Images
I know it sucks you can't use celebrity images anymore but guess what? You can get license stock photos on the cheap. I pay for adobe stock every month and I get 10 images a month for like $30. You also find cheap stock photos in places like creative market or Depositphotos. You might be a lot less limited in what you can use but it beats getting sued by an angry photographer or model.
Do Use Public Domain Images
Public Domain images are so awesome. I use them all the time. The best place to get them at the official public domain directory but for quality photos you should absolutely use Pexles.com. Not only on Pexels most photos are free, but you can usually message the photographer about any possible licensing conditions.
Don't Use Pinterest Images for Marketing or Cover Photos
I love Pinterest to get ideas on cover art styles, fonts, and marketing ideas. I love using Pinterest to get character references that I use privately and NOT for public marketing of my book. But I saw an author use an image of a well-known model that they got off of Pinterest to use for the cover of their book. THIS IS COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT and you can be sued for this.
Oh, you can get away with it for a while but eventually, someone is going to notice and YOU WILL GET SUED. Always remember that the moment you started selling books, is the moment you have become a business. A business can be sued for various reasons. Ask Nike about this.
Tumblr media
(Custom Art from Seth Smith that I was gifted)
Do Get Character Portraits from Artists
Artists and Authors go together like peas and carrots. Every author I know is getting custom character portraits and clench covers. We love to see it. It's artists helping artists. I firmly believe in supporting the arts. And those custom art commissions CAN be used in stuff like merch or book promotions. Just make sure that your artist gives you clear instructions on how your commission can be used. Some artists will give conditions on how and when those custom art pieces can be used. Note: make sure you get all of that in writing.
Do Not Use A.I. Art or Avatar Generators In Your Marketing
I'm very anti-A.I. First of all, A. I generated content is a copyright landmine. Recently the U.S. Copyright Office stated clearly that only HUMAN-created content can get copyrighted. So if you are using A.I. stuff you may have no legal recourse if someone decides to steal your content. Another reason that using A.I. is awful is that A.I. is trained in other artists' works. A.I. generated art does not exist in a vacuum and the artists whose work is used to produce those pieces often did not consent nor get paid for people to use their work.
We talk about piracy all the time, but most authors don't realize that they are essentially committing piracy (and art theft) when they use A. I art.
Do Digital Watermark Advance Readers' Copies
Speaking of Piracy, You as the owner of your intellectual property have every right to protect your property in any way you see fit. One of the best ways to protect your advanced reader's copies is by digitally watermarking your Advance Reader Copies. There are also services in which they will take down any pirated copies they find on the internet for a monthly or annual fee.
Do Not Use Use Copyright Images and Stills from Movies in Your Promo!
Using book comps can be essential to marketing your book. Book comps are usually things like Beauty and the Beast X Avatar in marketing or when pitching your book to an agent. You can not use copyrighted images from your favorite tv shows and movies in your book promo. Remember you have to license any images you use in your book promo.
I accidentally did this in my book promo for 'More to Love' and I took it down the moment I realized it. As a business, you have to be aware of what assets such as music, photos, and videos you can and can not legally use.
