I sense an Auradon Mapping Project in my future…
I’m still making my way through the giant stack of Descendants tie-in books I bought a while ago, and the more I read, the more I want to dive into the actual kingdom divisions of the “USA”
(it’s critical that you all know I am making the most exhausted possible air quotes around USA - if the mashed up fairy tale kingdoms in this franchise are mostly referred to as KINGDOMS and REGIONS they would not also be STATES! It’s a weird choice for an acronym that doesn’t make that much sense in the first place!)
anyway.
This page got to me:
Let me break the start of this one down—
Sherwood Forest is six hours away from Auradon City.
Sherwood Forest is located in Westerly.
Westerly is one of the nineteen (19) regions of Auradon.
great, makes sense!
Except, does it? Because this raises SO many more questions for me, and I’m not even getting into any of the maps that are provided earlier in the book, because frankly they’re sort of a nightmare and provide NO useful sense of scale.
My initial questions:
Sherwood Forest is six hours away from Auradon City. Great! This gives us a sense of scale to measure from for the other kingdoms.
The other kingdom/region pages don’t mention how far they are from Auradon City, so this probably means six hours is pretty far.
Because they’re measuring from Auradon City, we can reasonably assume that Auradon Prep is located in Auradon City, or possibly a small town directly adjacent to the city.
In the movies it looks like Auradon Prep is on a pretty big campus, with open space for sports fields, and a forest on the edge of the property. Cities don’t…..usually have that much open green space to allocate to a school, so Auradon Prep is probably located in a smaller town close to the city. Maybe they’re making an effort to be walkable, and the Museum of Cultural History is on the edge of the city closest to Auradon Prep? Maybe they want the students to be involved in the Auradon City civic processes, so they take students into the city regularly? We don’t know for sure!
As a follow up question, is Sherwood Forest six hours from Auradon City by car? Carriage? Ship? Moped? Private jet?
Because they’re calling this the “USA”, I’m going to assume the answer is car. That feels like an appropriately US-centric method of measuring travel times.

WHAT ARE THE OTHER REGIONS??? ARE THEY NOT STATES?? USA???
It’s fine, I’m fine, this is all cool. Regions. Nineteen of them. With towns within them, like Sherwood Forest and Locksley, Robin Hood’s hometown. Both located within Westerly. One of the nineteen regions.
if we’re going back to Robin Hood lore, these locations all get way more complicated . I’m choosing to believe that Locksley is the smallest town/holding, located within the larger Nottingham/Nottinghamshire County, which is located in the region of Westerley, in the USA. That’s four levels of governance to deal with. Yay, local politics!
Are the nineteen regions of the USA mostly kingdoms? Do they each have a royal/noble family? We know that each of the classic Disney Princesses has a kingdom, but are there multiple kingdoms per region? Are some regions not considered kingdoms?
In conclusion:
I’m more confused than when I started.
Someday I’m going to make a master list of all the movies I want to fit into this world and just spend an entire weekend making a region/kingdom/town map for Auradon so I can keep track of the nineteen (19) regions.
I got really fixated on this nineteen regions thing while reading, and will be structuring my personal headcanons for Auradon government around this number.

Eccentric artist reader where you hole yourself up in your studio aka tiny apartment for days on end. You don’t know how you’ve made such a living in such a small space, but it’s what you prefer. A cramped space that thrusts all of your ideas in your face, all your successes and failures plastered on the wall to help motivate you further.
Your newest project is a life size sculpture. It takes up most of the space in your living environment and you’re typically too cramped up to sleep comfortably. But it’s worth it—all the long days and gruesome nights.
You’ve created the infamous Dynamight. Hand carved into a heavy stone a couple of moving men had to dump into your apartment, much to their chagrin. It looks just like the hero—tall in stature, wide in attitude, so big that even it towers over you. You still feel the ache in your upper arms from the stretch to perfect his chiseled features despite standing on a stepping stool to reach.
His muscles are sinewy and thick, veins bulging from the marble, and if you close your eyes when you touch it, you swear the marble radiates warmth. Even though it’s void of color, the riotous spikes of his hair seem to glean an ash gold and his hardened eyes shine vermillion when you look at it from the corner of your eye.
When it debuts in some big time museum after going viral online, you don’t expect Dynamight himself to show up. He stands front row when the statue is exhibited, a cloth ripped off, showy, despite millions of people seeing it already online. In person, to him, it’s breathtaking. It’s scarily accurate—the hard look on his face, determined in a strenuous battle, the hard and rigid lines of his body, the softness of his lips, the thickness of the muscle. It’s eerily similar, and he can’t help but flick his eyes between the statue and yourself as you stand beside it with a humble smile.
They ask him to go up beside the statue, mimic the pose so everyone could see just how amazing and accurate the portrayal was. And he does, more in awe than anything at the details and the realism of something so cold, so fake. He bends slightly at the waist, twisted a little to his right side, both arms bent slightly as he raises them above his head, palms pointed to the sky, glowing, his face strong, mouth set in a determined line. It’s the same pose he used when there was a crumbling building resting on his shoulders, the weight of it great but nothing that could overpower him. It’s a beautiful sight, strong and powerful, he parallels an old god meant to be worshipped.
He invites you out to coffee after the exhibit is over, and you accept his offer. It’s a surreal experience, to see and touch and smell and hear the actual person you’ve spent months studying. He’s not as loud as he is during post battle interviews, you realize, and it makes you smile when he praises you in a quiet, gruff breath. He’s warm too, as he lets you hold his cheek when you ask for confirmation that he’s the real thing and not some cold marble you’ve become all too accustomed with. Something is stirring between the two of you, neither of you know what yet, but it’s something that you both would like to explore more. Maybe even on an official date the next time.

the more i think about poor things the more i dislike it lol. i think i kept waiting for the horror shoe to drop and it just never came.
when candles says 'it's your body to do with as you wish bella' or whatever i thought it was this really ironic, haunting line to show how trapped she truly is (it's god's body! it's victoria's body! it's candles' body!) and that bella would subvert it by the end. but looking back i think it was intended as a sincere moment to show how decent a guy he is along with his 'your body your choice' slogan shirt and some clap emojis.
it's soooo twisted especially since right before this bella has just met felicity, the Other woman candles and godwin have Also dug up and mangled. i really wanted to learn more about her but she's played for jokes the whole time and belle never gets a second conversation with her. i thought that would've been really fascinating for bella to get an outside perspective on what that early dynamic between her and god|candles looked like but if the last scene is anything to go by it doesn't look like bella has any interest in building a relationship with her. such a wasted opportunity to not explore that.
and candles' response to creating her is just 'we missed you' AUGH ? horrifying! bella calls him and god monsters for it and there's literally no followup. the 'it's your body to do with as you please' bit feels so obviously hollow when like, what happens when bella dies? are they just gonna pluck her brain out again and try again because it bums them out too much? find Another Another girl to do this with? it's soooo fucked and there's such a cool horror thread to follow there but i think they just didnt realise they were writing a horror film? in their frankenstein retelling? god it's so WEIRD
i love the conversation with god where bella talks about being mother and child at once. i wish that's what the movie was about! her relationship with victoria and trying to build an identity from inside her mother's corpse like HELLO . the runtime is so long and it feels like all the interesting stuff is just on the peripherary the whole time, just out of frame. but like we're looking at victoria's face this whole time, hearing her voice! obvs it's not the story they were interested in telling but for Me. the specialest girl alive. i wish they didn't shove that whole plot into the last 20mins, there wasn't any time to really sink their teeth into it then.
i dunno like. even trying to read the film as this bildungsroman exploration of identity and living and life, the final scene just being bella back in her walled garden but now she has her childbride husband and her socialist girlfriend and theyre all drinking martinis. it feels like such a restrictive incurious ending that really soured me on the rest of th movie. All That Shit That Happened Was Fine Actually.
