my boyfriend took me to see Hadestown for Ani DiFranco’s opening weekend as Persephone and when I told my therapist about this she did a double take and was like “wait..he’s a cis straight dude right? nice.”

Hadestown is really trying to branch out it's audience! First it caters to people who listen to bad pop music, millennials and gen x folk music fans, and now lululemon Swifties!

Ani DiFranco as Persephone
Here’s what I’ve got to say on the situation as your local Hadestown historian. And remember that if you don’t want to hear bad stuff about it, the #sephgate tag is the one to block.
On the one hand, it’s pretty cool that they’re bringing back someone from a pre-Chavkin production! It’ll expose modern fans to the early versions of the show.
On the other hand, I have some reservations about this casting decision.
First up is her politics. I’ve learned the hard way that I can’t always make a convincing political argument so I’ll keep it short: some time ago she held some retreats at an old slave plantation and got defensive when people said “hey maybe this isn’t the most considerate thing.” That, and she supported the exclusion of trans women at some women-only music festival, with some TERFy feel to it. That, and the issues with casting a white person as modern Persephone, which others have spoken in with more clarity than I.
From a non-political standpoint, I’m worried about how she might play the character. 2010 Persephone and Broadway Persephone are VERY fundamentally different characters. Hopefully some input from the directors will help with that.
There’s also the matter of lack of experience. I checked her IMDb and IBDb, she has two acting credits; one voice acting and one as herself on some TV show. Basically, she has no acting experience and is going straight to Broadway. It’ll be a minor miracle if she can pull it off with so little prep time.
Lastly, if I hear or see ONE MORE PERSON call her the original Persephone, I think I might actually lose my mind. With all this focus on the concept album, there’s going to be a very common misconception that the album is the first version of the show, but you all here know better than that. Still, it’ll bug me a bit.
I do want to hope that she can do good, but no matter what this is leaving a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. I suppose only time will tell!

Unpopular opinion maybe?: I don't hate the current Broadway cast of Hadestown?
While Betty Who isn't my favorite Persephone, I don't hate her like other people do? There aren't many clips of her but from what I've seen I like her actually And I do trust Ani Difranco since she's played Seph before.
Jordan Fisher was in Dear Evan Hansen and did great so I trust him with the role of Orpheus.
And other cast members like Solea Pfeiffer and Phillip Boykin are excellent! There was a boot with Solea on YouTube for a little while (it's gone now tho--) and I think I may like her a little more than Eva. And the audio and few videos of Phillip Boykin as Hades are awesome!! He vaguely reminds me of Ken Page.
Idk, I've just been seeing some negative stuff about the current cast and just wanted to put in my 2 cents. While I am a little worried about the implications of all the stunt casting, at least the actors are good. (in my opinion at least)
And I think everyone agrees the 2024 West End cast is great so at least we have that!
(there's also the small group of National Tour Cast enthusiasts like myself ^^)

Im sorry but what is mich fest and the transphobia?
Don't be sorry, it's a very intra-community issue and a lot of people may not be aware of it
Basically Michfest stands for "michigan womyn's [sic] music festival" and it was a music fest that existed for awhile and made it a point to exclude trans women. It'd been around since the 1970s and in the 90s they made it a thing to exclude trans women and make it for "biological women-born-women" only". The festival stopped in 2015, but the impact of the festival and its transmisogyny still remain
A lot of trans women and trans people in general contribute it to the rise of TERFism and general transphobia within the queer/feminist community
And basically, Ani DiFranco defended it, saying that she "saw both sides of the argument" -- meaning she sympathized with TERFs who were "pro-trans women being excluded from the festival" bc she thought that ~biological women~ deserved a safe space
As if trans women don't also fucking need safe spaces, and as if trans women are somehow a threat to afab/cis women?!?!?!
Tbh it is so disappointing and gross considering so many people see Ani as a queer icon. yet she holds so many terrible views about trans women and transfemmes
