WelcomeToWriteblr brings you another prompt event, this one themed around the planets of our solar system! Like our last prompt event, this month is a redux of an older event that we’d once again like to bring to the community!
From MAY 25TH TO JUNE 2ND create something in response to that day’s prompt and post it. WTW Ghost Gala Day 1 - Pumpkin Carving
Pumpkin Carving: You have to kill off a character. Who do you choose?
Some of my books/WIPs already include character deaths in them, so I will answer this question hypothetically as "who would I, as a reader, expect to die, or who would make an interesting death?"
ALiCE: Christopher is living out a slasher film, one with shaky ties to reality as it is. It makes perfect sense for him to be the not-so final girl and end up dead at the end of it all, if he isn't already.
Like Falling Stars: This is a cozy fantasy, so technically no one should be expected to die here, but if the genre were shifted slightly to a darker fantasy then one of the faeries would probably be expected to kick the bucket and Nicolas be blamed for it. The truth of whether he is guilty or not would be a significant plot point for Ann to pursue.
Stellar Eclipse: There are so many characters that have nearly died in this series! Readers may be relieved to know that Baltan was once slated to be dead in a distant epilogue but has since been spared because I simply didn't have the heart to kill him off and make the planned ending any more bittersweet than it already is. If I was going to kill someone off for real, it would probably be Keida or another member of the Kwoltan Gera extended family.
The Alliance Saga: There are a few characters whose fates I know readers are anguishing over while they wait for the release date. Some deaths are already known. I will say that the one I am most eager to kill off...one of the main cast...WILL survive the first novel, Shifting Roots. No guarantee beyond that.
Familiar Ties: Would be interesting to see what would happen if either Ripley or Freyr were killed, given that the other (and their parents) would unleash an absolute bloodbath in vengeance for their beloved.

Wednesday Love
I talk about Castien a LOT but what about his boytoy boyfriend??? Since he's in beast form doing stuff right now, we get some neat stuff I can do since Castien is a deer :D
Avalon’s winds howled shrilly through out the abyss of the sky. No light touches the fur of the red wolf stalking forward. He is half mad with hunger, saliva forming foam around his mouth. He was no better than a rabid hound. He smelled blood nearby and simply could not help himself.
A doe looks at him with big brown eyes. The trees barely shield her. Her entire body quivers like a leaf about to be torn from the branch.
Wednesday looks at her, drooling again despite the meal he ate moments ago. He knows he shouldn’t. No. He can’t. If he kills this one deer, who’s to say he won’t go mad and try to kill Castien next? The doe freezes, her blood thrumming like a wild river washing.
The doe regains her senses and bolts off, leaving the odd wolf to his moral crisis.

Not much was done for October. I'm nearing the end of my (hardest) semester so most of my time and energy was spent on school.

Probably not. I'm spread too thin to even think of writing 50k this year. I have a hard time with that even on my best and least busy months lmao. But even though I'm not participating in NaNo, I'll still be participating in events! I signed up for @/writeblrgarden's Grow A Plant event with a goal of writing 20K this month :D I'll be spreading that goal out over multiple projects though for my own sanity lmao

Yeah so I watched a movie in October and it inspired me to write a master-apprentice assassin novella, so that's been simmering in the back of my mind.

NaNoWriMo writing update
Original word count goal: 20,000
Adjusted word count goal: 15,000
Total words written during NaNoWriMo (so far): 7,969
Total words written for my wip: 49,719
Total word count goal for my wip: 80,000
Here's a writing update about my NaNoWriMo experience that nobody asked for. This will contain mostly statistics and my overall writing process. I apologize if this is very boring; I might talk more about the story of my novel in another post. Good news: I passed the 50% mark of my first draft! On the first of November, I hosted a virtual live write-in. We started off strong and had a lot of fun! Thanks to my wonderful writing family @writeblrcafe, I felt motivated to reach my word count goal. Plus, I joined @welcometowriteblr camp.
The second week of NaNoWriMo, I got bedridden sick. Sadly, I couldn't write a single word for my wip Drachenbrut. The original plan was to write 5,000 words every week. To keep myself motivated to write, I adjusted my word count goal to 15,000. University and my part-time job took a lot of time and energy out of me. I managed to squeeze in some writing sessions and concentrated on finishing one scene during one session.
Reviewing the length of my chapters, I realized they are very long in the middle of the book. In comparison, the beginning and ending chapters barely have scenes. So I restructured them and put some scenes of chapters two to four into chapter one, while still staying true to the plot. Then I added another (now empty chapter) as the second last one for all the plot points that haven't been resolved in the previous chapters. So on average, every chapter should have 10.000 words. I planned 8 chapters, so in total my book should have 80.000 words. So far, I don't know if I'll make it, but I keep telling myself:
Slow progress is still progress.

WTW Ghost Gala - Day 1: Pumpkin Carving
You have to kill off a character: who do you choose?
For this month's Ghost Gala event hosted by @welcometowriteblr, I will be filling the prompts as relates to my WIP Fate is Just the Half of It, a queer post-apocalyptic sci-fi.
Now, let me preface by saying that I don't kill characters off, and neither do I generally 'make X happen' in the story. I'm a pantser through and through, and I let my characters drive the plot, while I take notes in the backseat (and occasionally get yelled at when I point out their bad choices).
That said, for the purposes of this prompt I'm prepared to entertain the possibility of an unauthorized character death, a 'what if' where someone dies before their time. And wouldn't you know it, there can be no better candidate for this than one half of the main duo, Mr. Jack Howard himself.
(Jack says: wait, what?)
So here's the deal. The main body of the story is set some 200 years after a nuclear apocalypse (Fallout stylez), and follows the two main leads, Rowan and Jack, who were together before the end of the world and then find each other 200 years later, two improbable survivors. Except one of them... isn't. Because, you see, while Rowan skipped ahead in time by taking a cryo nap, the Jack he will find post-apocalypse is a sentient android who was given human!Jack's digitally preserved memories and personality. The original human owner of those memories and personality (Jack Howard prime, if you will), did, regrettably, perish on early post-apocalyptic Earth.
He did, however, make it almost a decade, and kept a journal through that time: a document that will Rowan will come across as he searches for Jack in the future present day, after getting a tiny shred of evidence that his man is a survivor like himself.
So, what would've happened if past!Jack didn't spend a decade traipsing through the apocalypse and taking down (mostly very irate) notes? The main difference would be that his diary would never have existed, and Rowan would not find it.
And here's the irony: when Rowan sets out to search for Jack, he's convinced the latter is somehow alive. Except when he comes across the diary, he finds confirmation of Jack's death from the man himself, as in his last entry, Jack writes about being badly wounded and preparing for imminent demise. And if that were not enough, Rowan follows the 200-year-old trail to Jack's alleged place of death, and finds remains and effects that strongly suggest that Jack Howard had, indeed, died there.
So had Jack died sooner, had his diary not existed to fall into Rowan's hands, would it have made Rowan's search for him easier? Yes and no. On the one hand, without Jack's own account leading up to his death, not to mention physical evidence, it would've been a lot easier to keep believing that the man he saw on recent security footage really was Jack. But on the other hand, it was exactly when Rowan was faced with the impossibility of reconciling his burning certainty vs. the evidence in front of his eyes that a new hypothesis re: Jack's survival presented itself, courtesy of another sentient android character who was helping out Rowan at the time. Without having his search for Jack driven into a temporary dead end that inspired this idea, who knows how long it would've taken Rowan to track him down (especially seeing as android!Jack was spending most of his time literally on the moon at the time...)
If asked at the time, reluctant-apocalypse-survivor!Jack would say that it didn't matter at all whether he died one day or ten years after the bombs fell. His world was gone, and he knew he would never see the love of his life again. He had no way of knowing the future. But ultimately, it was his stubborn determination and will to survive that would help Rowan find the way back to him 200 years later.
Because, as so many parts of their story will show, fate is, indeed, just the half of it.

do you have any advice for growing your writeblr?
i don't know how qualified i am to answer this, but here are some of the most helpful things i've learned over the past 3+ years of being on writeblr 🫡
engage with other writeblrs
if you see someone rb an ask game, send an ask ! if you see a tag game with an open tag, do it ! if you see a post actively asking for wips like yours, rb it ! it might seem a little hard to put yourself out there at first, but when people are offering a chance at engagement you should take it. if you find yourself drawn to certain people (and maybe even become mutuals 😳) ask them if they'd like to become critique partners or even just a friend to bounce ideas off of in the dms.
if that still seems a too extreme, here is loml maddie @veneritia's posts on starting your writeblr & writeblr etiquette, as well as hottie @helioselene's crash course for navigating writeblr.
post consistently
by my standards that could mean bimonthly (twice a month or once every other month) but yes, consistent content for consistent projects is the place to start. even if i'm working on multiple projects simultaneously, i only ever post about 1-2 at a time to keep things less confusing. it's also generally a green flag to your taglist that the thing they are interested in is being actively worked on.

"it's writeblr, not graphicblr" iykyk 😮💨 i'm not saying you have to immediately learn graphic design, digital art, etc. in fact, when i started out, i literally had no idea how to make any fancy graphics. a good moodboard can do just as much, but imho presentation matters. there can be a bit of a learning curve though, so i'll link some of the free resources i use:
photopea - it's like photoshop but on desktop
canva - has a bunch of free assets, fonts, & templates without watermarks. very beginner friendly 💞
unsplash - high quality, free-to-use photos
dafont - tons of free fonts
psds - i've linked @cavalierfou's resource navigation page, since they have a lot of free, beginner friendly templates to help you get started !
but quality content isn't all smoke and mirrors. make sure it has substance to it as well. if i post a last line tag, i am not going to ping my entire taglist just so they can look at three out-of-context lines. if i make a character moodboard on a whim, i'll be sure to add a relevant, decently-sized piece of writing/information to go with it. not every post has to be a party, but it's super important to not abuse your taglist 😤

yeah ik, my intp ass hates having to say this, but it's really the most important point on this list. join discord servers ! join @welcometowriteblr ! (#notspons) slide into those dms (respectfully) ! it can be hard, it can take time, it can even seem impossible, but having a creative, supportive, & super hot friend group to hype and get hyped by really makes all the difference.

Wednesday shenanigans! Content Warning for animal death and almost drowning + a poll!
He bounded towards it, still panting heavily. A lone lamb that must have strayed from the flock. The poor wretch could only bleat brokenly. On nights where the Goddess of Nothing reigned, both moons were strangled from the sky. This little lamb never stood a chance.
‘Are the Gods watching right now? Can She see what I’m doing. Will She always hate me?’ As his mind whirled, his paws moved closer on their own accord.
It didn’t matter. The veil of darkness in the sky snuffed out all eight of the planets. He didn’t need to see Ravana’s blue and green mess in the sky. He didn’t want to, either.
He sunk his teeth into the soft, warm flesh of the little beast. Red drops stained snowy fleece.
To Wednesday’s great remorse, it didn’t even bleat. No screaming. Not even a twitch. Only quiet acceptance. As the lamb looked at Wednesday, no emotion registered on its face.
He leapt over the ground like it caught fire. Now he needed to get away. From what? He didn’t quite know. What kind of thing would want to chase a wolf? He didn’t want to find out.
The only salvation was the rushing river. The form of a red wolf diving into the rapids of a river. The ice cold force swept over him, propelling him ever forward. He went head over tail several times, bumping against the rocks.
Wednesday tried to inhale, but only caught water colder than the blizzards that rage across the northern depths of the Unseelie Court. The cold force of water rushed into his nose and ears as it finally propelled him upwards.
Finally, he could get some control over this situation.

Plot developement
I was wondering if I'd just let one of my characters in my book die to create more drama, but I can't do it. It's too heartbreaking. I'm attached already.
