When Comes the Dawn, book 1 of 2

Slide 2: wdym my fantasy story has to have magic?

Set in a fantasy world loosely set in the late antiquities/early middle ages., where everyone alive has the capability to harness magic. But actually using it requires strict and intensive education (and maybe a phD or 5) so most people only know very basic spells.

In Trinitarian belief, it’s believed that the goddess Meidther gave her blood to bring humans to life, and because of that people are imbued with magic. No living person can be alive without magic because it’s literally impossible! Wait -- the emperor of Aetier has a what????

So there’s this weird phenomenon where on very rare occasions, babies will be born without magic. Called “deadbornes”, these babies are incompatible with life and usually end up passing away minutes to days later. With one notable exception (we’ll circle back to this later)

Slide 3: the set-up

The Empire of Aetier (or if you ask any local: “the gods’ specialist little empire”) has a very unique way of handling succession in the imperial family. That way is murder. Just murder. All heirs plot against one another in a formal-informal system called “The King’s Game.” It’s supposed to be a competition of skills, but it’s kind of warped itself into state-sanctioned fratricide (NOT to be confused with a battle royale. That’s just uncouth /j)

The last King’s Game ended 22 years ago, when Dantalion vi Aetier defeated and killed his half-sister in battle. As the victor, he crowned himself the new Vasilier of the empire and proceeded to bring in a new golden age of prosperity for his people. And nothing is wrong and everything is beautiful, and there is no way this can go wrong

... right?

It all starts on the day Fenice was born... where instead of being the healthy and uber powerful child Dantalion expected her to be, Fenice turns out to be a deadborne. Deadbornes are considered harbingers of ill omens, and siring one is a terrible way to start your new reign. And even stranger still is the fact that Fenice...doesn’t die? Someone call the priest and ask them what does it mean if your death omen refuses to go away

Slide 4: The plot

The end of the Hesperia-Aetier war brought new lands under the Empire’s rule, and with it, new ways to gain power and prestige in the Imperial Court. The biggest thorn in the empire atm is that Hesperia’s last king is still wandering the lands somewhere, waiting to strike.

Imperessa Fenice vi Aetier (who’s still alive and kicking) just lost her mom in the war, and now she’s desperate to prove herself to her estranged father that she’s more than a disappointment and wasted potential. And what better way to do that than to succeed him as the next Vasilier?

The problem? Only those that undergo an Ascension are considered legitimate contenders for the throne. The other problem? Dantalion won’t give her one.

Fenice: “Trade offer: I receive my own province to rule and an Ascension. You receive the head of the deposed king of Hesperia.” Dantalion: “Deal. But you have to marry his brother though” Fenice: “What”

Now wedded and gifted with a province of her own to rule , Fenice actually has to set-up her own power base and follow through with her end of the deal to find and kill the runaway king, as well as extinguish the rebellions he’s so keen on igniting.

But the more she looks for him, the more she realizes he’s being backed by someone much more powerful. But who?

And on totally unrelated note, there seems to be some weird rumors going around of some guy claiming to be Aretos vi Aetier, the son of the very same person Dantalion killed during the King’s Game 20+ years back. But that’s obviously fake news. Surely no one will fall for it!

the opposite of a wife guy, the only person he hates more than his wife is his father-in-law loves his family, would be nice to see them though.

generally a nice guy but recent events has him very stressed and angry 24/7

has murderous urges almost all the time

how it started;

draft one totalled in at 102,130 words (after many, many failed attempts at draft zero).

how it's going;

draft two is currently at a healthy 62,361 words. if i average the number of words per chapter, this is looking to have a word count of 144k. which is insane!!!!!

not only have the first lines drastically changed but i like to think there's a lot more political agenda, magic with consequences.... and obviously cannibalism metaphors.

going into the future, i'm hoping to maybe get beta readers once i finish draft 3... which seems impossible but also i gotta do it for my gang wip girls (juth). so if anyone is interested keep an eye out for that in the next few months hehe !!!!

hii, im mouse! im nineteen, african and queer as hell. i've been around writeblr many times, under many different names, but now i'm back, and would love to make some writer friends with stories to share!

i'm currently writing a gothic horror novel, titled run rabbit run, and the wip intro for that should be soon floating around on my page.

i love writing about grief, family that was once lost, and redemption arcs. nothing better than your problematic fave getting called out on their shit.

when im not writing, im usually still writing research papers for work (working with frogs atm!! picture above is mine) or for uni (animal behaviour/zoology students rise up!!)

run rabbit run; draft one gothic horror; wip intro

charlotte oberon has a penchant for lying, and getting herself into trouble. but for once, it's not her fault. her brother lies dead, and stretched thin from holding her family together, she is naturally relieved when oliver oberon comes back from the dead. but all is not as it seems. when strange things start happening, charlie must begin to face the truth, before she drowns in her own lies, alongside those she loves. set in an oppressive autumnal heat, in the hinterlands of queensland, australia, can a family crumbling from inside out ever heal from the grief haunting them?

when siren blood runs; draft two, on hiatus fantasy

tahjuddin youssef doesn't know how to face his family. 5 years ago he ran away, seeking fame and fortune on the red sea. well. he got one of them. luckily, his family welcomes him back with open arms, and as he relearns the motion of life off of the high seas, he begins to enjoy life again. less luckily however, is the fact that there is a bounty placed on his head. and the sirens are ready to have their pound of flesh. when tahjuddin is ordered to stand trial beneath the waves, and enemies are circling, waiting for the first sign of weakness, tahjuddin must learn who his real allies are, and in doing so, heal the wound in his family's heart.

In the heart of rural Arkansas, Ana Finch's world shatters when her father falls victim to a malevolent creature lurking in the woods behind their home. To survive the growing menace that now fixates on her, she must unravel not only her own grief but also the long-buried family secrets.

The buzzard above us croaked. Something heavy and unwelcomed settled in my gut. Daddy coughed, a hacking, wet noise deep in his lungs. The sound cracked across the small clearing like lightening. It made me jump out of my skin. Still the buck did not run. But the noise stirred it, finally. It’s head tilted, ears twitching when Daddy’s cough turned into a fit. His big weathered hand fumbled against my shoulder, looking for support. The leaves rustled as the deer took a step forward, its face coming center. The antler I hadn’t been able to see swung into sight. A coyote’s half-rotten head dangled from one of the long tines, pierced through the roof of the mouth and eye socket. Cold dread squirmed under my skull and fear roared in my ears.

“Go on get!” I shouted, clapping my hands together. It stopped mid-step, head veering again to fix its gaze on me. It looked at me like Wafer did. Like it saw me and knew me. Bile rose up in my throat. I repeated my actions, my pitch rising in panic. Daddy wheezed beside me like he couldn’t catch his breath. At last, the buck let out a rumble of a noise, nasally and low, before it’s tail shot up and it darted with unexpected speed to the left. Deeper into the woods. Daddy fell to his knees, a strangled cry of my name on his lips.

Vampires in Rio - WIP Intro

Synopsis:

Bia was excited to start college. After years living with her dad, under the shadow of her distant mom, she felt like this was her chance to carve out a place for herself. She wasn’t expected to meet Erick, a mysterious boy with strange habits and golden eyes, that turns her world upside down when she’s dragged into a world with fae, vampires and werewolves that seem to know more about her mom than she does.

THE WRITEBLR GARDEN'S ADVENT CALENDAR / day 1. holidays

for today's prompt i decided to go with the holidays in the unsuperverse! mostly the history ones bc i love unsuper history and also bc a lot of these happen during the story so i might as well talk about them once.

THE BURNING OF 2168 - AUGUST 15

referred to as the burnings, this was the four month period the selected destroyed the earth. the anniversary used to be a three month period in the bunkers where they mourned and celebrated the past. since it's been 580 years in unsuper, it's now just an annual day of resentfully remembering what has led their world to what it is.

BUNKER FREEDOM DAY - MAY 7

for 464 years the remnants of humanity were either ◾◾◾◾◾◾◾◾◾ or underground. as soon as the world realized the selected was truly going to destroy the world, they immediately began evacuating as many as they could into whatever bunkers they knew of. whether or not they'd survive was a problem they'd have to face later. the survivors were made up of a majority of government, military, and of course- those who paid their way in and those who earned it. despite their struggles in the bunkers, one day in may 2632, the survivors of a bunker in france came out and discovered the world was not the same, but it was livable. their survivors began exploring the new ruined land, unsure if they'd be able to find other bunkers with the new formations and destruction. bunker freedom day is celebrated with parties, drinking, and feasts.

SAVIORS DAY - NOVEMBER 21

the first sector, central, was built promptly later in 2632 and was originally just a small city in the remnants of what they assumed was france. it would later be called ground france, after the floating city was formed a couple decades later. central was only possible thanks to the ideas of the saviors, a group of charismatic scientists, architects, and rich men, who discovered the earth was likely habitable. their group was the one responsible for humanity moving forward again. saviors day is celebrated with parades, parties, and the savior's ball in the governor's mansion.

THE END OF FLOOD SEASON - JUNE 20*

flood season begins in late march and ends in the middle of june. the end is an unofficial holiday where once the final storms have ended and the waves have passed, flood season is over. there is no real celebration except a collective sigh of relief as everything goes back to normal.

SECTOR COALITION DAY - FEBRUARY 1

each sector in union is made up of whatever countries were remaining in europe after the burnings. many of them did not want to join with france and the saviors at first, until they showed what they could do by building the first sector. the first three floors came the quickest, which is why they are currently the richest and most exclusive floors. the next two floors were a bit more difficult to get to join, so when they finally did they commemorated it with sector coalition day. every year since, each new sector in every city is celebrated.

FLOOD PLAGUE REMEMBRANCE DAY - JULY 27

at least four million people worldwide have died from the flood plague, which continues to be a problem in current unsuper. remembrance day is celebrated with mourning and visiting the tomb sector- a dedicated graveyard in each city. some bodies are kept elsewhere, but plague related deaths must either be brought to the tombs, burned, or thrown out of the city.

FENICE VI AETIER, a portent of ill omens and the estranged daughter of the Vasilier, ignites a dangerous succession game between her and her half-siblings, where losing means death and winning means an empire.

The end of the Hes-Aei war brings with it a chance to prove her worth to her father. The challenge is simple: bring him the head of the deposed king of Hesperia, and Fenice will be granted an Ascension, marking her as a legitimate contender for the throne. But finding the defeated king in his own lands would prove to be harder than Fenice imagined— especially when the remnants of her father’s last war starts rearing its head.

A system decreed by the first emperor of Aetier that whoever among his children is the most skillful shall inherit his crown. But time has warped the rules of inheritance dramatically. The only way to survive is to win, and the only way to win is to be the last one standing.

FENICE VI AETIER ◇ the contender | The worst-kept secret of the imperial family, and now an unknown factor in the politics of the Aetier court. The King's Game is her chance to stake her place in history. What she seeks is glory eternal, and she will do whatever it takes to get it.

NIKEPHOROS DEOMINOS ◇ the serpent | The prince of a conquered kingdom, now nothing more than a war prize. He muffles his anger with practiced smiles, playing the game of deception even as it tears him apart at the seams. He will lose either way, all that matters is deciding what he can bear losing.

CHARLES VI AETIER ◇ the favorite | The Vasilier's son with the world at the palm of his hand. The lonely prince with a gentle heart and a willingness to turn a blind eye to the cracks in his perfect family.

SOLA EIDOS ◇ the hound | A man of of unknown origin and a shadowed past, his real name buried beneath the soil of his homeland. He is an information broker, a spy, an assassin-- if you pay the right price. The one thing that can never be bought is his loyalty, a worthy master is hard to find.

SARTORE VITAE ◇ the enigma | An eccentric noble from Leohnthal who can charm his way to a seat at every table. Great with words and even better at half-truths, he is a man that sheds faces as easily as a snake sheds its skin.

SYNOPSIS;

Victorian London is on the precipice of destruction.

Happy Storyteller Saturday!

How would your main wip change if it was a short story instead of a book? (Or vice versa!)

Thanks so much for the ask! My main WIP at the moment is The Crescent of Fools and Forgotten Time, which is a feature film, so I'll modify the question and answer for if it was a show; maybe something in the 20 minute episode range.

As a movie, I wanted it to hit the roughly 1.5 hour range because that's what felt right for a comedic fantasy heist. I love what I put out but converting it to a show would open up some interesting possibilities I haven't explored.

I'd show Lott and Jayce on a completely unrelated heist to establish them as thieves and explore how the thieving guild works in this world.

I'd add in a visit to Lott's family - maybe even a whole episode - because I think his past is really interesting.

I'd stretch out the final showdown (not commenting on who it's between for the sake of spoilers) just a little bit because I'd love to have a visually explosive spectacle.

I think Amara is a really interesting character and her doddering about in her workshop could be given more time.

Lucille would go on to recruit more than she does in the movie as it stands at the moment.

I think a show format really just allows you to flesh out the world some more beyond just the main plotline simply because it gives you more time to do so. There's also minor arcs created by breaking down the story into each episodes which lends itself to greater possibilities, and you can even pause the overall arc for an episode or two while you go off exploring something else.

Jayce and Lott find themselves in the twisted grasp of Lucille Carmine, one of the most dangerous Overlords of the criminal world, in a fantasy-heist, splicing the thrill of walking the edge of a knife with fantastical malevolence.

This is a feature film, the script for which I've submitted to a competition where the grand prize is the winner's movie being fully funded and produced!! You get a say in who this is and literally all you have to do is read the script and give your honest opinions (psst your honest opinion is that you love my movie).
