for my new ttrpg campaign, Choir (scifi, multi-system, set in a homebrewed universe based on the machineries of empire books' setting), we've been playing a bunch of worldbuilding games in preparation, including one- or two-shots for each PC to play out specific moments from their backstories. (for more general campaign info, see this post!)
anyway, i thought i'd write up brief summaries as to how these backstory games have gone, because they've been a blast and i highly recommend doing this for a campaign that'll involve deep character exploration.
1. Love Triangle in a Death Cult Regency
PC: Idona Noci (they/he)
TTRPG: Good Society, "a collaborative regency rpg that seeks to capture the heart, and the countenance, of Jane Austen’s work."
Backstory situation: How teenage Noci chose duty over love.
Present-campaign Noci is a trained torturer and professional indoctrinator, but they were just a teen once who had to choose between an arranged marriage or a continued relationship with a lower-class boyfriend. We played out one week set 25 years pre-campaign to show how Noci chose marriage and responsibility over love. The setting was a space station that floods with time-keeping tides, set during a week-long celebration of the faction's revered saints. Good Society was such a fun vehicle to play out the intricacies of a death cult space society, and the two-shot was honestly so moving???? i have not stopped thinking about it???? A++++.
2. Chase Through Space
PC: Moment's Pallor (she/zie)
TTRPG: HOUNDs, "a dice-stacking roleplaying game about the bond between a mech pilot and their robot companion."
Backstory situation: How Pallor was caught trying to run away with a stolen, sentient spaceship.
Present-day Pallor is a coder, a scientist, has already been executed once, and doesn't understand why it didn't stick. We changed HOUNDs to be about a computer coder/hacker and a sentient space-moth that had been harnessed and augmented into a ship. Five years prior to the campaign, Pallor connected to said moth, realized that it was sentient, liberated it and tried to escape the empire. Zie was caught and executed for this, then brought back to life under mysterious experimental means. HOUNDs was so much fun and did a great job ramping up the tension of the chase and allowing touching, calm moments too. (We play online, and used Tabletop Simulator on steam for the dice-stacking, which worked very well!) I love this mothgirl and i can't wait until zie can be with hir moth again wahhhh.
3. Divorce Negotiations
PC: Attra Rose (she/her)
TTRPG System: A Long Night in the Mech Bay, "A TTRPG about Relationships Reforged in Conflict."
Backstory situation: Rose and her wife (an NPC) negotiate a divorce while reminiscing about their relationship.
One year before the campaign starts, Rose got divorced (but they will be on the same crew once the campaign starts, oops). We used an albeit incredibly hacked version of LNitMB to play out the seven years of Rose and Han's relationship, from meeting up until and through the divorce negotiations. This was mostly accomplished by completely rewriting all the questions so that they were specific to this couple, and reversing which kinds of questions were asked first, so that it started with happy memories before we entered The Agonies. We also added NPC opportunities and setting description stuff so that the other two players could contribute, but the basic framework was still really useful for this kind of exploration, and I love the idea of starting a brand-new campaign with scar tokens lollllll. anyway i am unwell and having a GREAT time.

a disorganized pile of ninefox ttrpg thoughts
Tumblr media
it is HERE! also it was late in shipping by like, a day? or two? so android press sent me the PDF version also, which was very very nice of them. For this I will forgive them the weird jank in the PDF version’s character encoding. (Maybe like 5% of characters consistently copy-paste as different characters. I think they fucked up the font subsetting somehow. It’s fine, it’s just weird. Makes quoting it a little bit of a hassle. Might be less fine if you use a screenreader.)
So pleased with several little random details which are not at all relevant to like, gameplay or the worldbuilding at large but which I just kind of wanted to know. The calendar months! The full set of Kel rank symbols! Signifiers for Kujen and Tseya! <3 Also, an additional set of symbolism for the factions per the calendar months? If I’m reading this correctly it's Rahal/Wood (!?), Andan/Bells, and Vidona/Knives. [We basically knew the other three, which are Shuos/Eyes, Kel/Pyres, and Nirai/Stars.] As a visual artist I am contractually obliged to be hype about all my little guys getting Symbols, they make my life easy and fun.
This is a slim little volume, so it’s light on lore details that you couldn’t find either a) in the actual series or b) on Lee's dreamwidth. That said, one new bit was that it was not previously clear to me that the nominal arrangement of power in the heptarchate was explicitly unequal between the Liozh and the others — I thought the extant six turned on the Liozh as one of their fellows, not that they deposed the ruling faction. Interesting.
Disappointing: there are no mechanics for the calendar besides the ability to tag the current festival/remembrance. :( I wanted to roll dice about calendrical rituals!! Funnily enough there's a whole little caveat section where he’s like, inevitably someone will want to have space battles, which can be accommodated by keeping them character-focused bc this system is not designed for battle sim crunch. No similar apology for those who might want magic system crunch, if anyone wanted any further evidence that Lee and Jedao are the same guy, lmao.
Other than that I’m not actually that much of a crunchy rules guy myself so I like the system itself fine. I enjoy the concept of every check involving not necessarily skills but character traits. And also the commitment to sixes. You need A LOT of d6s for this game.
If you’re really committed I think it would be fun to play with a set of these (normal d6s except instead of numbers or pips they have clock faces showing hours 1-6):
Tumblr media
Jedao’s character sheet is so funny. “Complications: I have abysmal taste in lovers.” BE NICE TO HIM LMAO
It’s not entirely clear to me under which circumstances you wind up the Hexarchate Clock. Is it actually only if Kujen is in play? Does that mean he’s literally required if you want to run a long take-down-the-whole-hxx campaign?
The prewritten scenarios are neat! I don’t have a lot to say about them. They look like they would be fun. I like “The Field of Diplomacy” and the concept of the adjacent polity a lot. Oh also the note at the end of “A Heretical Sacrifice” that is just like “if the ‘human sacrifice’ bit is too vague for you and you want to add more torture, here are some ideas!” is 1) funny and 2) appreciably graphic and wince-inducing. HXX-typical gore: delivered on!
This is a petty note, but excluding servitor PCs on the grounds that this is a game about moral complicity and thus only human faction members can be PCs sure is a Statement. I know servitors are slaves and thus the moral calculus is certainly different, but like, the complicity is the entire point of Hemiola’s arc??? And faction servitors quite obviously often consider themselves to be legitimately part of that faction? The one Shuos servitor we meet is as interested in games as any fox, the assault on Shattered Needles is made possible because the Unspoken Law’s servitors consider themselves Kel, the Aerie interlude with sin 𝑥² is about a servitor who considers itself so deeply Kel it wants to go down with the hivemind. I understand they complicate things mechanically but excluding servitors for thematic reasons is silly.
That said, I feel like a servitor hack wouldn’t be too much more mechanically complex. None of the prewritten scenarios work with an all-servitor group, but I think they could all be run with one or maaybe two servitor PCs. You’d have to do some pregaming to figure out how you’d open communication between human/servitor PCs. Lore-wise, the faction traits are clearly not meant to represent the faction exotics or the Shuos wouldn’t have one; they read more like “specialized skills developed as a consequence of picking this faction” than calendrical stuff, so faction servitors could have standard faction abilities, with the caveat that a lot of interpersonal Edges may be hard for Andan servitors to hit on account of social interaction between servitors & humans being, well, you know. Alternatively, no faction abilities for servitors, but all servitors +2d6 to anything involving grid-diving and/or mechanics. Servitors can have ranks just like human PCs, though these ranks are only relevant to other servitors (and possibly moths). Servitors can probably tag calendar traits like humans, they just can’t participate in formations or affect calendrical gradients (neither of which have explicit mechanics in this system anyways). Heresies are the same for servitors as humans.
This really made me want to dig out that calendrical cryptocurrency heist concept I had to see if I can put together a scenario. And maybe also make some cardboard game spinners for a tactile clock experience...

Hi, everyone!
I wanted to get the ball rolling on some fandom events for The Rings of Power, since that’s going to be a good way to help creators gain visibility and keep the fandom thriving while we wait for season 2.
I’m kicking the year off with Rings of Power Valentines Week. This event will run from 2/14/23 - 2/21/23 and is focused on celebrating all of the relationships we love in The Rings of Power. Please read the pinned post on the blog for rules, FAQ, and further details!
Here are the list of daily prompts I’ll be posting so you can start thinking about what you might want to make to share!
This is not an exchange. No sign-ups needed. Just start posting content when the event starts and I’ll be reblogging all of it here!
PROMPT LIST:
Day 1 - OTP - absolutely anything and everything to do with your OTP or OT3, romantic or platonic or anything in between!
Day 2 - Family, Fidelity, Fealty - what are your favorite parent-child, sibling dynamic, found family, or fealty-based relationships? Explore and celebrate them!
Day 3 - LGBTQIA+ - what it says on the tin. A whole day dedicated specifically to your favorite queer relationships.
Day 4 - Gray Spaces, Friendship, Self - what relationships do you feel exist on that border between platonic and romantic. Which relationships are unrequited, or simply unfulfilled? Explore your favorite friendships, or take a second to think about a specific favorite character you have in mind and how they think about themselves, or what their own relationship might be to romantic attraction.
Day 5 - Date Night, Meetcute, Love Languages - how do your favorite ships like to spend time together? How did they first meet? How do they express and want to experience affection?
Day 6 - Cultural Traditions and Differences - worldbuild, if you want. How do the Elves of Lindon celebrate love? What are some courting or marriage traditions of the Harfoots? How might two characters from completely different backgrounds run into trouble when trying to court each other?
Day 7 - FREE SPACE
These prompts are absolutely optional and you do not need to complete a prompt on a specific day. They’re just here to hopefully jog some creative juices.
Please reblog this post so others can see it, and participate if you feel up to it! I want to see this fandom thrive.

book recommendations?
Gideon The Ninth and Harrow The Ninth!
Tumblr media
Part 1 and 2 of the Locked Tomb series, with the third entry coming out later this month. Pitched fairly accurately as "lesbian necromancers in space" what I love most about it is the worldbuilding - the ten thousand years of history that turned our world into this world. It's an absolute treasure trove of buried lore and eldritch nightmare fuel obscured constantly by unreliable narrators and fluctuating narrative tone. The narrator of the first book is too bored and checked out to noticed 95% of the crazy foreshadowing she's faced with, and the narrator of the second book is, for spoiler reasons, an extremely unreliable witness of the events going on around her. I will say that the opaqueness of the actual events of the story can make these books better on a reread than on the first read, and if I hadn't gone into Harrow The Ninth with a hefty bank of spoilers I probably would've tapped out about halfway through, because the book spends about half its wordcount actively gaslighting the reader about the events of the first book. It's weird and I love it.
Iron Widow!
Tumblr media
Described as "pacific rim meets the handmaid's tale." Giant robot combat plus hefty political drama set in a futuristic sci-fi setting based strongly on Chinese history and mythology, starring basically a reimagining of Wu Zetian, a serious contestant for the coveted History's Baddest Bitch Award. Features one of the only instances of "should I choose the bad boy or the sweet, safe best friend? orrrrrr maybe we can all just fuck each other" polycule love-triangle resolution. A portrayal of socially systemic misogyny so frustratingly on-point it actually set my teeth on edge and made it very easy for me to root for the heroine burning the world down for funsies and catharsis. Awaiting a sequel!
Elder Race
Tumblr media
A relatively short read that's 100% worth it just for the fascinating language barrier portrayed between the two protagonists - the spunky princess of a sort-of-medieval fantasy kingdom setting out to slay a demon and prove herself to her mother, and the anthropologist from earth stationed on this planet to observe the cultural development of this human colony over the centuries. Each chapter is written from the perspective of one of these two characters, and at times we see events/conversations from each of their perspectives. The book is written in modern english, but this is explicitly a translation convention, as what the anthropologist says and what the princess hears are two very different things - something that frustrates him immensely. I want to see more stories written in this setting and it bums me out that I probably won't get any.
Thud!
Tumblr media
Uh oh! How'd this Discworld novel get here? Looks like you'll have to read the other City Watch novels (Guards! Guards!, Men At Arms, Feet Of Clay, Jingo, The Fifth Elephant, Night Watch) to have sufficient context for this one! A fantasy police procedural (like all the other City Watch novels), this story centers on the eternal blood feud between dwarves and trolls and how it threatens to boil over in the cultural melting pot that is the great city of Ankh-Morpork, spurred along by the anniversary of a legendary battle between the two peoples that was left unresolved. Caught in the middle are the city watch, trying to keep the peace and solve several thefts and murders while wrangling two extremely insular communities that would rather be left to their own devices to murder each other in peace. There's also some absolutely incredible worldbuilding about dwarf culture and the unique texture the multifaceted concept of the dark takes on for a civilization that lives almost entirely underground. This is also explored in earlier City Watch books. Oopsies! I seem to have once again recommended six other books! Oh well!

apollo justice trilogy ideas
because capcom fucking WASTED the potential they had with aa4 and the storytelling of the trilogy deserved to be replicated with more characters
notes under the cut
aa4
keep everything basically the same, but add some references to clay, make sure apollo doesn’t exist in a vacuum outside of being a lawyer, yes its really fucking funny but objectively shit for worldbuilding
other than that, change nothing. this is my maybe favorite game in the series for a reason (not the cases)
aa5
scrap everything in this game. some bits and pieces can be kept, but it’s not a lot. there was momentum coming out of aa4 that capcom fucking WASTED with this game
rival prosecutor can be sebastian, detective can be kay
sebastian is friends with klavier and knows apollo because of that
when they meet there’s a scene where sebastian is like “it’s you! mr. forehead!” and apollo replies “what on god’s green earth did you just say to me” or something along those lines because it would be really really funny
klavier and ema are referenced, but not shown. in case 2 apollo can say/think something along the lines of “i wonder who i’m going up against, since ema is studying to retake the forensics exam and klavier is in germany”
speaking of which, klavier is reflecting in germany, spending time with his remaining family, figuring his life out. BIG miles in aa2 vibes but without the incredibly worrying note
trucy is in school more, which means clay can be co-counsel occasionally
background notes about what phoenix is up to (ie apollo thinking about how the first thing phoenix did with his badge back was defend a whale, mention of how he visited maya in khura’in, etc), but he’s still around for the cases. not really doing anything, but he’s there and kind of helpful
there are references to kristoph throughout the game, he is NOT brushed off or swept under the rug
case 1 is turnabout countdown without athena and apollo in the hospital, phoenix co-counsel maybe? basically ted tonate kills candice arme without any of the stuff relating to the cosmic turnabout
case 2 is the monstrous turnabout without athena, sub in trucy since jinxie is her friend anyways
case 3 is completely new, apollo’s landlord is killed, clay is co-counsel
case 4 is also completely new, a murder at a science lab maybe? but clay is co-counsel again
case 5 is the cosmic turnabout without athena and the cliffhanger to set up turnabout for tomorrow
clay and sol switch because i care about clay
culprit can be the phantom disguised as yuri cosmos, he escapes and remains at large when game ends, sets up aa6 nicely
aa6
canon has been thrown entirely out the window, khura'in can exist but it has nothing to do with apollo, it's just "where mr. wright's sister is working"
clay references come back, he's still in space, went up on hat-3 instead of sol because reasons
ema is the detective again, she passed the forensics exam and i love her
simon is the rival prosecutor, we can bring athena in gradually (and maybe set up an athena cykes trilogy but shhh i'll worry about that later)
i'm not sure what the cases are, but the central conflict is between apollo, klavier, kristoph, and the phantom
also klavier is back in japanifornia, tags along on investigations sometimes maybe?
@jackedup180 had a really good idea where there's kind of a matt engarde/shelly de killer vibe between kristoph and the phantom, kristoph makes the plans and stuff but can't commit any crimes because he is in Prison, the phantom can go commit the crimes and probably have more of an alibi
FUCK I ALMOST FORGOT but the phantom is disguised as bobby fulbright again, cause that would be a good dynamic and a decent enough twist. maybe at the end of aa5 they didn't realize that yuri cosmos was the phantom, and that can be brought in subtly now
the one case i AM decently sure of is 6-5, where the victim is metis and klavier is the defendant
no one really believes that it's him, big turnabout goodbyes vibes, but i'm doing that on purpose, dw
aura can still pull the hostage thing cause she wants justice for her wife, which leads to phoenix telling apollo about the Thing and bringing thalassa in at the end of the case because goddammit, capcom, it's been over a decade, you Need to tell them
miles can be the prosecutor cause klavier is still one of his best prosecutors and simon's too invested/not ranked highly enough and also wrightworth lol

What is the best order to read your works?
It really depends on what you like, anon -> Because I write across quite a few different genres!
If you like original stuff:
If you like contemporary / slice of life, then you might want to start with the Spoils universe, specifically Spoils of the Spoiled and subsequent stories!
If you like omegaverse, you might want to start with the Underline the Rainbow universe! (Careful though, this one's unfinished!)
If you like epic fantasy, you might want to start with the Fae Tales Verse, which is the main canon, with Game Theory as the first story.
If you like epic fantasy but you want to read a standalone instead of something over a million words long, that has a happy ending and is an OT3 (i.e. M/M/M), you might want to read The Wildness Within!
If you like epic fantasy but you want it to be a standalone and you want it to be really dark incest between two brothers that ends up having a hopeful ending despite going to some truly twisted places, you might like Strange Sights!
If you you like epic fantasy but want to read a standalone, and features diplomacy, meeting strange, alien cultures, and dealing with fae who have very unique ways of doing magic and interacting with the world, as well as childhood sexual abuse recovery, and a Mage trained by his father figure who also happens to be the King of the Unseelie fae, you might like the Lone Wolf series, and especially The Nascent Diplomat! (Careful though, this one's unfinished).
If you like fanfiction:
If you like fanfiction where you don't need to know much about the original world, as well as space opera and military / political plots, you might enjoy The Golden Age that Never Was!
If you like fanfiction where you don't need to know much about the original world, as well as classic fairytale fantasy elements, fights between Good and Evil, and obstacles that the heroes need to overcome, as well as a villain-turned-antagonist-turned-antihero, you might like From the Darkness We Rise and its direct sequel, Into Shadows We Fall! This is a GREAT introduction into the Fae Tales universe too!
If you like fanfiction where you don't need to know much about the original world, as well as epic fantasy in an elves/humans/etc. style world that's similar to DND, you might like Stuck on the Puzzle!
If you like fanfiction where you don't need to know much about the original world, as well as dark science fiction with an android/human relationship, you might like Eversion!
If you like fanfiction where you don't need to know much about the original world (and if you ever do, you can just ask me), as well as awesome fantasy/magic worldbuilding, ghosts, and exorcisms as well as fantasy BDSM, with two older lovers, you might like The Beast that Chose Its Own Bridle!
If you like fanfiction where you don't need to know much about the original world, as well as contemporary slice of life about enemies-to-lovers in a small country town you might like The Wind that Cuts the Night or even A Stain that Won't Dissolve (careful though, this one's unfinished!)
--
But I have no idea what kind of things you like to read or why you're here, or what you've read already (most folks who find me here have read something of mine already, if you haven't, then the above is a pretty good primer - just be aware that I put BDSM in everything, that it's all m/m and that there's always trauma recovery and hopeful or happy endings and you're good to go!) and some folks who like some stories don't read other stories, so there's no point saying 'this is my favourite' or 'this is the best place to start' when it has all the things you hate in it! You know what I mean?
I can't do much off a single sentence, I'm afraid, and because I've written so many different series, across different genres, I have over 5 million words out there, and it's not all in the same series, and it's not all focusing on the same thing. :D
But who knows, maybe you found something this way!
I don't know if you like the dark stuff or if you're uncertain about the dark stuff. If you love kink or don't know how to feel about kink. If you find trauma recovery really squicky or if you're okay with it. And I can't make blanket recommendations on a reading order when I've written millions of words across multiple series and genres.
So I'd much prefer to target recommendations specifically to what you like, anon, because we are not all the same, so I wouldn't give everyone the same reading order to my works :D
Happy reading, if you find something you like, let me know!!

fic writer meme
I was tagged by @ziusik <3
1. how many works do you have on ao3?
between my two pseuds, 132. I started posting end of 2018 and i orphaned 1 fic so that's everything
2. what's your total ao3 wordcount?
996,548 words
3. what fandoms do you write for?
Right now various Thai BL, mostly offgun, and I'm on the docket for a DCU fic for a pal who won me in a raffle
4. what are your top 5 fics by kudos?
the top 17 of my most kudosed are all MDZS wangxian, what a powerful fandom (then a witcher then a leverage)
Love Is More Than Telling Me You Want It - the omegaverse big gender feels one
Yeah I Know How You Like It - wwx gets telepathy and lwj is horny then touching about it. love every time i get a comment on this that's like this is a pwp why am i crying. hehe
your persuasions - lwj has a big dick and wwx is a san francisco based high tech software programmer. they fuck about it
the earthquake in the room - alternate universe Canada modern university fic. In which lwj does not make wwx toast
wild for your skin - canonverse pwp
from this i suppose that most people are pretty disappointed when i update and it isn't smut
5. do you respond to comments?
always! I feel like fandom is this thing we're making together and when people reach out to me I reach back and in that way we both add stitches to the tapestry that is the community
6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I think most of my fics have a hopeful ending. So it might be Verbs are a Tragedy the Captain Marvel Carol/Maria fic about Maria grieving. Or wait! maybe the Never Let Me Go fic because it ends right before you know that Chopper is about to get his heart broken. Or the John Wick fic about Helen cause you know she dies later and isn't able to keep her promise of helping John leave the business? Ok maybe I do have some angsty endings.
7. what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
ha what is happy. Maybe the Leverage fic where Eliot has to pretend to be married to Hardison even though they are exes and that one ends with him proposing to Parker and Hardison and them being happy together
8. do you get hate on fics?
Rarely. Not usually hate at me but sometimes my fics make people pretty angry. I don't love it when people yell at the fic. the funniest though is getting an angry bookmark on a fic that i turned comments off of cause people were angry. like you do you in the bookmarks but lmao
9. do you write smut?
do i ever
10. do you write crossovers? what's the craziest one you have written?
I write fusions and crossovers! My wildest crossover is a 5x fic about Fezzik and Inigo from the princess bride meeting different other characters which actually might be the angstiest one now that I think about it because their last section is them going to the grey havens from lotr so they can sail into the west together. they also party with phryne fisher
11. have you ever had a fic stolen?
i think only onto wattpad
12. have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes, and it's so cool!
13. have you ever co-written a fic before?
Twice! One time on a leverage fic and it taught me how to use semi colons and also write introspection, a lesson i have forgotten and one time lesbian beach volleyball porn with a friend.
14. what's your all time favorite ship?
uhhhh oh no. they're all my favourites. of the ships i've written... no can't do it.
15. what is a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I dream of finishing my pacific rim x avatar fusion with mdzs. the worldbuilding was so much fun.
Everything else I think I've comprehensively abandoned in drafts. rip carol and maria having fun in space, jon and tormund going to winterfell, and the shl ocean's 11 au oh shit also the fic where wwx was adopted into the nie sect and it changes very little in some ways. Otherwise I tend to finish things I'm kind of a robot
16. what are your writing strengths?
smut and extended metaphors
17. what are your writing weaknesses?
description, romance, tenses, character introspection. i also think my sentence level writing is not that strong
18. thoughts of writing dialogue in another language in fics?
do whatever you want forever
19. first fandom you wrote for?
leverage! my first fanfic is on ao3 for that show. though technically i did a creative writing exercise where nietzsche and the librarian from a Borges short story hooked up as a class assignment in university so idk i guess maybe literary rpf
20. favorite fic you have written?
uhhhhh. i genuinely don't know. they're all their own little thing. im more interested in hearing which of my fics are other people's faves

look, the kingkiller chronicle (the name of the wind + a wise man's fear, by patrick rothfuss) is not a perfect series or anything, i love it a lot but i have Opinions - but. it IS one of those book series that's lodged itself very deeply into my brain for better and for worse. it lives there now, along with animorphs (a series i haven't read since i was a preteen) and some other friends. you know how it is!!
anyway every now i think about a Thing from kkc and it's like. i need to talk about this. i don't know who to talk about this to. hence: my blog. and usually the thing i need to talk about is the adem. for those who haven't read kkc, the adem is one of the people's in this fantasy setting. their country and culture is very isolationist, their only export are mercenaries (Very Good Mercenaries Who Know Martial Art Secrets), they have a very different culture than the rest of the continent and therefore come across as very strange and mysterious. from a worldbuilding perpective, i think the adem are super cool. i love that rothfuss really leaned into developing a very different culture, even if there's... Some Things That Do Not Scan.
in the story, we find out that their culture is matriarchal, and they consider their women to be better fighters than their men. in fact, we find out they regard men as lesser because they don't realize that men contribute to uh, the creation of children. their culture is very big on casual sex and i don't think they do marriages or pairings like that at all, so their belief is that women Just Get Pregnant Sometimes! which is a fresh and fascinating take on the fantasy trope of "hmm how would a matriarchal society work" but ALSO. also. this would not happen. this could not happen in a world where queer people exist. there are canonically gay and bi people in these books. obviously i was reading this as a baby ace and was like HMMMMMMMM DOUBT. i cannot suspend my disbelief enough to think that every single woman in ademre would want to have (cisheterosexual) intercourse frequently enough for this to be a believable assumption, especially if there's no societal pressure to do it for reproduction!!! IT SIMPLY DOES NOT SCAN.
like, it's not that i'm a stranger to fiction ignoring the fact that Maybe Not Everyone In The World Wants Sex, that's kind of the eternal background noise of 95% of all media. i think maybe this one instance drives me nuts because from an aro perspective, i LOVE some funky fresh Alternative Family Structure worldbuilding and separating sex from romance. but then the sex thing. this whole thing is like.... an aro W but an ace L. it made it so far and then fell flat on its face. screams!!!!
THIS WASN'T EVEN THE THING I WANTED TO TALK ABOUT THOUGH. i just can't bring up the adem without talking about What The Fuck Was Up With That. the other very cool part of worldbuilding is how the adem express themselves - they keep their faces blank, but express emotions through hand gestures. and today................... i finally made the connection between This and Autism. I SHOULD'VE MADE IT SOONER. i've been recently coming to realise i don't really watch people's body language or expressions very closely irl - i don't know if it's because i'm bad at reading it, or if i just live in scandinavia and i think we're not so big on body language/eye contact over here, so there's not much information for me to extract? a lot of people tell me that they communicate a lot better when meeting people in person, and i kind of, can not relate to this very much? i can not think of anything i get from meeting people in person that i can't get over text except the speed of conversation. like, sure, there's Tone of Voice but i don't always find it the most reliable piece of information, either. in fact text makes it easier to parse the words and gives me the time and space to reply appropriately. THIS IS PROBABLY A ME THING. I MAY BE MORE AUTISTIC THEN I THOUGHT. welcome to my favourite game of "is it the autism or is it scandinavia"
BUT. i gesture with my hands A Lot. many people have pointed this out to me. i have no idea how expressive i am with my face, but i'm Very expressive with my hands!!! i haven't really thought about this until recently and that's when. the memory of the adem struck again. THEIR NEUTRAL FACES AND THEIR EXPRESSIVE GESTURES..................... NO EYE CONTACT, WATCH THE HANDS....................................... what a fantastic concept. i would adopt this if i could. it does make me wonder though, would it be easier or harder to be autistic in a culture like that? you would still need to learn hand expressions and all the subtle social rules... but it seems more accessible to me, somehow.
anyway that was tonight's KKC thought. it was autism

A Whovian Watches Star Trek for the First Time: Part 084 - A Transporter Ghost
Star Trek: Enterprise - Season 4 Episode 10 - Daedalus
Tumblr media
So, we're meeting on of Trip's childhood hero's, according to trip "The Father of the Transporter", a man called Emory Erickson. He seems kind enough, but the title of this episode has me thinking we're going to be dealing with something akin to the legend of Daedalus and Icarus, and someone is going to be undone by their own hubris.
After the Intro, we get a nice conversation between Trip and T'Pol. Trip tries to get T'pol to open up about how she feels about her mother dying, in a way that kinda parallels Trip's own grief struggles throughout the previous season over his sister, it was really nice to see! I like that he recognises what T'Pol is going through from himself.
We're also treated to some nice worldbuilding about the history of the transporter, and the various controversies that Emory had to get testing approved for it, which is really fun. We've had a few episodes with the crew anxious over the transporter because it's relatively new technology in this time, but hearing it from the guy who invented it is something else.
Apparently, it's not just a random visit though, Enterprise is taking Emory to a very empty region of space to test a new long distance transporter, that can send people between Planets.
Apparently, Emory had a son who passed away, and in a private conversation between Emory and his daughter, we find out that he's lying about the purpose of the experiment, and Power starts to fluctuate in the armoury, and some invisible creature is lurking about, and kills on of the members of the crew. It seems the true purpose of this experiment is to bring back Emory's son, who would be the Icarus to the title's Daedalus. Makes sense.
Outside of that thought, the long distance transport genuinely works! They manage to transport a probe 4000km out! Trip does notice the weirdness around the power situation, and reports it to Archer. Apparently this transporter is supposed to use less power than the normal one, so it doesn't make sense that it needs to be tapped into the engines.
Archer and T'Pol manage to track down the creature causing the energy fluctuations, and Archer finds out that it's definitely Quinn. Archer Confront Emory, and Archer agrees to help Emory bring him back.
Emory is very interesting antagonist, you really feel for him, and I love this kind of grieving family character arc. Trip's anger at being betrayed by his childhood hero is also really well acted, and great to see.
The Crew prepare the transporter to bring Quinn back, but unfortunately there isn't a strong enough signal to do it, and materialisation would kill him. Quinn is for all intents and purposes dead, and it's heart-breaking to see Emory refuse to accept that.
I feel like this one could have worked better if we didn't know Emory was up to something so early. A lot of the first half of the episode is just waiting for Archer and Trip to catch up to what the audience already knows, so I would definitely cut both scene of the private conversations between Emory and Danica to make things flow better.
The pacing was kinda off with this one in general, but I loved the character interactions, particular the ones furthering Trip and T'Pol's relationship, and the conflicts between Trip and Archer over whether saving Quinn is worth risking the ship. Plus, it was nice finding out a bit more about Archer's childhood. This episode could have been really good a with a bit of tweaking to it's structure, and I enjoyed it regardless of it's pacing.

id love to hear about your other wips! are they all horror too?
Not all of them are horror. But most of them contain some horror/thriller aspects
My biggest wip that has the most work done on it, the most worldbuilding and lore, the most ocs (50+) is a fantasy titled the Nine Realms that takes some inspiration from Norse/Germanic and Celtic myths. It follows several generations of one family from the dawn of humanity to its fall as this family climbs to the hight of nobility and then eventually falls into obscurity. There's Giants and Elves and Dwarves and prophets and shapeshifters and spirits and dead gods that lurk in the shadows and whisper strange things in your ear.
My second biggest wip is This Is The Way The World Ends. It's about superhumans in a world where superpowers have been normalized and are now a normal mundane thing. It follows a group of thieves who steal something very important from a mob boss in Las Vegas and have to deal with the consequences of that. A lot of weird shit happens too because superpowers are weird, at one point they kill god and it's like a normal Wednesday for them. This one is more humorous than the any of the other ones.
Then there's Cosmic a low sci-fi about a woman's suicide mission to get revenge and it takes place on a circus themed cruise space ship (you know how we have cruise ships its like that but in space and with clowns... and a woman trying to blow it up). This is the web weaving for it.
Things Behind The Sun is a sci-fi about cyborgs and androids. It's also about bodily autonomy and disability and how corporations crush the poor and disabled just for a profit. Typical cyberpunk tropes.
Heaven Must Be Burning is about a witch who makes a deal with the devil but feels like she was cheated so she travels through the nine circles of hell so she can kill the devil and then god. Not sure if this one is a horror but it does have a lot of creepy stuff in it.
Now for my horror wips:
Godlings is the horror prequel to This Is The Way The World Ends. It is the villain origin story of the Big Bad of TITWTWE. It's about 5 superhumans who go on a killing spree together and then one of them turns on the other 4 and starts hunting them down and killing them one by one until he is the only one left standing.
Darkside is a sci-fi horror about a group of scientists who go to an alien planet and one of them gets possessed infected by some alien disease that makes her homicidal and makes her body rapidly decay and she tries to kill everyone.
Meet Me In The Woods Tonight is about a small town with a lot of secrets. One of them being that there's a fucked up deer creature in the woods that eats people. My icon is inspired by this wip. My hometown is also the inspiration for the setting in this.
Another wip (whose tilte I can't decide on) is about a true crime writer who gets the chance to write a book about an infamous serial killer and the during the interviews the two become obsessed with each other to the point of murder.
Between The Walls is about a haunted house that's haunted by the ghost of a cannibal and the cannibal's victims. This one started out as a uquiz which you can still take here.

Obligatory introduction time!
Hello fellow lovers of the written word! I’ve been lurking here for a minute and it seems to destroy my soul a bit less than all the other social media homes, so I may stay here for a minute.  I am Nikita (she/they), and I have been writing my entire life. Sometimes I even share that writing with others! I have a blog where I haven’t posted since before the pandemic before tonight. I posted the same story, Rya, on Tumblr, which I may or may not continue doing for shorter stories. It’s a bit of an existential piece about loneliness and connection and the places that only exist in our minds. I also am constantly submitting my stories to magazines and am writing a novel based on the idea of fairytales as propaghanda for the ruling class that I will probably be posting a lot about, as I am currently living vicariously through one of my MCs, Oak. I had no idea that her whole journey of being locked in a tower and only experiencing the world as an adult vagabond was my way of coping with a childhood of extreme isolation and probably undiagnosed autism and only truly experiencing the world as an adult vagabond because I am, among other things, utterly clueless.
I write about setting, traveling between worlds, metaphors in nature and space, blending real and unreal, insignificant moments that feel like they either weigh a thousand pounds, or could carry you away. Really I write whatever I need to get out of my head at the time.
I am interested in reading almost everything! Seriosuly, I will read the ingredients to mustard if that’s all I’ve got. I do have a love for character-based stories, unique worldbuilding, focus on non-romantic relationships (have a weak spot for sibling relationships, long-term friendships, or relationships with a huge generational gaps), switching character POVs, weird stuff that doesn’t make sense, stories that span ridiculous timelines, and any story that is basically philosophical questioning in disguise. I’m usually not a fan of romance-heavy plots, but if the relationship is good, I’ll probably love it anyways.
I am looking for writer friends, above all else! I also want to connect with artists, as I have Art Needs. Ideally I want to build relationships with people where we can honestly workshop one another’s work, discuss the craft, lament about the process, and ask the important questions we didn’t realize we needed. But I also just want to read your work! Discover indie authors! Feel less alone in this very lonely craft I have chosen to base my identity on! I’m about a year away from completing a creative writing degree, and I miss the ambience of being in a room of people who genuinely care about writing and want to help one another grow.
Also though, I am terrible at social media and Being Online in general, so please be patient with me as I break rules I didn’t know existed and use the terminology all wrong. I am hoping this is finally the time where I carve a space online where I can feel relatively comfortable and don’t burn out from the unfamilar social landscape (at least for a couple of months).  So please! Say hi! Link me to your work! Ask me a question! Rant about your characters! I want it all!  I look forward to meeting you. :)

Can we get a lore rant about the space mans
*deep inhale*
Space Keeper is one of the founding keepers. Keepers are basically my OC world’s equivalent of the Greek gods.
The way the keepers work is each of them have control over one specific thing. In the beginning when there wasn’t really anything, there were the founding keepers that started to create stuff. As time went on, more things were being created that the keepers couldn’t keep track of, so they created (not like that-) more keepers to help them. These are the minor keepers.
Minor keepers are slightly less powerful keepers that serve mainly to adjust the work load and stabilize creation. Only founding keepers can make other keepers.
Anyway so back to Space.
Space, while having a broad range of stuff to keep in check, only has two minor keepers to assist them, those being Keeper of the Stars and Keeper of Moons. Space, like the other keepers, has their own personal realm, which is basically a really small galaxy (small as in the size of New York City).
Now to address Space’s wings.
So on Space’s ref sheet, they aren’t shown to have wings. That’s because they no longer do. Okay, we’ll technically they do but they don’t show them because they’re charred. Basically, they had these large, elegant white wings that were burned and destroyed in a fight among the founding keepers. What had happened was a disagreement between the founding keepers over how to go about with creating a universe, which spiraled into a fight, which created War.
War is not necessarily a keeper. They’re considered one by the majority of the keepers, but the founders don’t necessarily consider them one. War was not created intentionally nor by a specific keeper, and they don’t oversee a certain area of creation. Instead, they stir up trouble among the keepers and the creatures along the Timeline.
Space, while mainly uninvolved in drama unless it specifically involves them (this being one of the few times it did), was caught in the crossfire between conflicting sides, and when War made their dramatic appearance by literally blowing up the meeting hall, Space had attempted to shield Time and Energy (two other founding keepers) and ended up having their wings catch fire. When the hall collapsed, Space fell with it, all the way down to one of the planets. To the eyes of creatures in the universe, they saw a wonderful meteor shower. To the eyes of the keepers, they had just lost one of the most important keepers.
Space didn’t end up dying, but they did hide out on this planet for quite a while until Star and Moon found them and convinced them to return.
Since then, Space had been very quiet and oftentimes is found in the outer reaches of the universe or in their realm.
Anyway, feel free to check out their TH

Round them up, I say!
I've watched more stuff. Let's quickly run over it...
Stardust Telepath
A really socially awkward and shy girl fantasizes about space to find friends among the aliens. Only to meet a really strange girl (and classmate) that claims to be one! In her efforts to get her back to her home planet she befriends two more girls and they all get into launching model rockets.
Tumblr media
This is a show that teases with yuri vibes, but it is really a wholesome story about friendship and... gun powder model rockets?? I wonder if there will be a season 2. This stuff is heartwarming. Bonavuu!
Locodol
What does a small town that isn't particularly outstanding in anything do to promote itself? Besides inventing a mascot, it apparently creates a local idol group - Locodols!
Tumblr media
In the end, two girls are chosen, and two more girls (of small build) are hired on to wear the mascot costume. Again, a story about friendship with yuri-teasing vibes between the two Locodols themselves.
It also opens a bit of a window into how the parts of Japan outside Tokyo try to generate interest in themselves, especially to attract tourism, including inventing new local specialties or events. And the cute mascots battling it out on national TV were hilarious!
Bocchi the Rock!
Wow, I'm really backlogged. This one actually deserves its own article, but right now I don't have the time to do that...
A socially awkward girl obsessed with rock music and actually a secret shut-in guitar hero dreams about making friends. Her lucky star gets her roped into a band with (eventually) three other girls where.. she initially sucks. (Playing with others is a separate skill, believe me.)
Tumblr media
We not only follow her journey towards self-actualization through rock music, we also get to watch her inner world. In a hilarious twist, all her friends can too! It's what makes it one of the funniest series out there.
Bocchi the Rock! is funny and fun to watch, and contains some genuine stuff about making music and being in a band. Apparently it was an instant hit and people can't wait for season 2. Me neither! You go, Whatever-san!!
Burn the Witch / Burn the Witch 0.8
A quick warning before you watch this. The first season of this is only 3 episodes long. This series from the creator of the extremely popular series Bleach has simply not amassed enough content for more, that's why it initially was released as movie. (And then it was split into episodes.)
Given how much worldbuilding and character intro is done in this short season, one would expect a lot to follow. A season two will eventually drop. Until then we are left with a lot of concepts that have been name dropped but answers will have to wait.
Tumblr media
Burn the Witch tells the story of two young witches that work as Pipers, their job is to be first responders on dragon sightings (and lots of menial work) to secure the scene until the heavy guns (the Sabres) arrive. There are also a dude who attracts dragons (a Dragonclad) and his adorable feisty doggy. And some deranged girl named Macy that is apparently here to stay, her actual role still unclear.
Currently airing is Burn the Witch 0.8, a prequel season that explains how the witches ended up with Balgo, how Balgo ended up being a Dragonclad, and what everyone's darling doggy really is underneath. (This changes things?)
Gorgeous art, funny dialogue and scenes, great action, and some really ingenious (and horrible) dragon designs. Especially magnificient: All the fantasy elements we see in the countryside outside of Reverse London.
Tumblr media
INVADERS of the ROKUJYOMA!?
An older one - guy moves into suspiciously cheap apartment for high school, only to find it to be the battleground between a ghost, a witch from an underground civilization, a space princess, and a magical girl, all of which need the apartment for various reasons.
They of course all end up liking him or become his friends, and their rivalry gradually turns into friendship as they master individual adventures. Slight harem vibes, but mostly just good fun. How the ghost girl acts like his live-in girlfriend and actually sleeps sideways piercing through him is... unique. Good enough to deserve a season 2, but released in a time where that was rare.
(Apparently no GIFS for this one.)
Love Flops
I finished this one before HiDive actually closed shop in my country.
I'm going to spoiler on this one.
Starts out as a weird harem show where inexplicably five girls fall in love with same dude and confess to him in no time. In an even weirder move, they all end up living with him. Makes no sense, right?
Turns out, they are all AIs and he's in a virtual reality. Each one of them is the best effort of a team from a different nation to present an AI that can feel emotion. Hence their original weirdness before they start to grow into more real personalities.
Tumblr media
The story takes a more emotional turn when we learn that the base of all "personality AIs" is the protagonist's childhood love, Ai. Her father scanned her personality and brain into a computer before she died of a brain tumor.
The story resolves in a dramatic turn where the main character gets to say goodbye to his first love and they get to share the feelings with each other that they could never express while she was alive as they were too afraid and immature to handle the situation.
In a weird hurricane of a self-contained season this original anime series (not adapted from a manga) moves from explicit harem comedy with lots of fan service to action show to actually really sad and emotional drama. The ending is somewhat predictable, and that after all they put us through before.
It's watchable, sometimes funny, sometimes sad, and a whole lot stupid, too. It touches on spy action, magical girl, and even a gender-ambiguous arc. Parts of it are indeed touching. Could have done with being less things at once.
I'm Giving the Disgraced Noble Lady I Rescued a Crash Course in Naughtiness
... and that's not even the full title. And it's not shorter in Japanese, either. (The poor naming of most Japanese light novels is its own genre of comedy.)
The basic premise is that a Cinderella-like beauty gets framed for a crime, and somehow ends up in a powerful magician's care during her escape. He totally not has the hots for her, and wants to teach this innocent beauty how to be "naughty." The sublimation is powerful in this one! (Even if the search for a title wasn't.)
(No GIFs on this one, but thankfully also none for "disgraced," either. GIFs have become kind of naughty, lately.)
Crash Course presents a rich fantasy world and an evolving love story with a growing cast of characters. Breaks genre for a whole episode in the middle..? I liked it well enough. And it's about as naughty as Dark Helmet from Spaceballs is scary.
Classroom for Heroes
The great legendary hero that saved the realm gets reborn as a high school student, attending an academy where none of the students (and aspiring heroes) know his identity. He's totally overpowered, though, and quickly befriends not only the local prodigies (which he beats), but also a dragon (which he adopts), the robot guardian of an underground library (which becomes his maid), etc...
Tumblr media
A lot happens in a season and I lost track. It's generally fun to watch and has characters you end up liking. Nothing too surprising, all in all.
And that's it for now.
