First of all, during Mike's monologue, El's expression literally says "Mike, I know what I'm doing, just let me do it." She doesn't need Mike's advice; she can make her own decisions, and Max completely understands this (seen in her reaction when she hears what Mike says).
Then, when Eleven says "I need you to trust me." Mike could have responded like any boyfriend would "Of course, I trust you, I'm just worried about you." However, he just turns to Max as if seeking her opinion. I don't think someone who loves their girlfriend would ask another person's opinion just to figure out what to say. And Max's reaction is like "of course you can trust her, why are you looking at me like that?"
Also, this is supposed to be an intimate scene, a conversation between just Mike and Eleven, the couple having a discussion. So why is Max in the background? Why do we see all her reactions? Why does Mike turn to her for something he should say on his own? It feels like Max is prompting him to say he trusts Eleven; it's like Max is speaking for Mike. Furthermore, this scene is a direct parallel to two other scenes.
The character placements are exactly the same - the lovers in the middle and on the right, and the other person on the left. I don't think the Duffer Brothers thought, "Let's make three scenes exactly the same, except the one with Eleven and Max is purely platonic."
Yes, yes I know. Almost everyone has seen this comparison now but I wanted to expand on it a bit more.
Both Vickie and Mike are the first to notice Robin and Will. Both of them look happy at first (I didn’t take a good picture of Vickie, but I promise she is 💀)
Then both Vickie’s boyfriend and El notice next. Vickie and Mike look more apprehensive or scared.
But why? I’ll tell you: FRUITINESS.
They both fear that they (Robin + Will) will get wrong idea and possibly get upset. To which Robin does, but Will doesn’t bc he’s excited to see El.
We know that Vickie is into Robin— so then why else would Mike have the same look on his face? [Rhetorical]
ALSO I WOULD LIKE TO POINT THIS OUT:
When El is talking about if Mike is a good kisser or not, she replies by saying “well he’s my FIRST boyfriend”. Max corrects her by saying “EX-boyfriend”.
It reminds me of this scene with Vickie and Robin:
Where Vickie says something along the lines of “my boyfriend —well— WAS my boyfriend”.
LIKE— these scenes signify that Robin still has a chance with Vickie and that El has independence from Mike.
BONUS PARALLEL:
The fact that Steve was watching every time Vickie and Robin interacted and even told Robin to go for it.
JUST like how Jonathan was watching every time Will and Mike interacted and had the talk with Will as well.
(Side-note: just now realized that Vickie and Mike on the left are wearing blue while Robin and Will on the right are wearing brown.)
Pouring this into your inbox bc I don’t go here but the ‘boobies’ script page got me thinking about how they wrote Robin as pretending to be someone else in order to impress Vickie, which like sure it could be nerves and it could be a young crush thing but also that’s usually a plot point that leads to a doomed relationship. Like even if they’re good together, they won’t last. Meanwhile Robin immediately spends the rest of the season being SO MUCH of herself in front of Nancy, who grows to like Robin for who she is when she’s 100% authentically herself. NOT TO MENTION the parallels of Robin acting out of character and trying to impress someone who might be the “safer” option to date. Hmm, who do we know who’s done that in this show?
All very very good point anon!! Robin and Vickie as far as we know have barely interacted. They don’t actually know that much about each other and as far as they do, Vickie only knows that pretend side to Robin.
And I totally agree with the Robin and Nancy point! At first Nancy was overwhelmed by Robin’s authenticity and honest, but quickly became fond of it as we see with the “you really are a weird runner!”
And true! This is defiantly giving Lucas and mike in the first season about mileven! Lucas being Steve and mike and Robin being paralleled here! Robin was so fascinated that Vickie laughed at her joke, which seems very similar as to Lucas telling Mike that he is just happy that a girl isn’t grossed out by him for once.
I’d also like to add that Jonathan has been lying to Nancy for quite a while which obviously is gonna lead to some major problems, and she said she didn’t want a relationship like her parents by just settling down with some guy from high school and have an unhappy marriage which is jancy continues, Jonathan plans to stay in hawkins (or wherever his family is) and Nancy has said she doesn’t just want to settle down and not chance her dreams for some guy. Also her relationship is showing bad communication just like her parents all tho they are still more affectionate. But then we have Robin over here who’s spilling her life story, from problems with her mom, to learning to walk later, to sharing she believes in conspiracy theories, and so on. I think that the communication Nancy and robin have would be so good for the both of them. Especially since we have seen how much happier and open Robin has been after coming out to Steve and being able to fully be herself.
The Cali group is on their way from Suzie looking for the Nina Project location (the previous scene with them we saw was actually Will's coded confession) and Argyle starts talking that Nina might be a small woman. We are shown Mike's reaction and the word "boy" behind him. Smalltown Boy.
Jonathan doubts the coordinates are correct and Mike with Will start talking about how genius Suzie is and that's why the coordinates can't be wrong, while Argyle keeps talking about a small woman. That's when Jonathan stops the car, Mike asks: "What are you doing?" and Jonathan answers: "I am stopping us before we get more lost." Hmmmm, okay. Getting lost while talking about girls? Maybe a coincidence. They get out of the car and are checking the coordinates. "Longitude is 116 degrees, five minutes, and 17-- Slow down. Slow down. All right You just go straight down. Like, straight... straight...It just doesn't make sense!" What doesn't make sense, Jonathan???? Straight...straight... Maybe, Will and Mike loving girls doesn't make sense????? I mean, look at them during that moment!!! Both are looking away. Looking miserable. Almost caught.
And you know what is even crazier and proves that I'm right???? This scene follows the one with the Hawkins group in WarZone. Do you remember what (or better say who) do we see in there that doesn’t make sense AND STEVE EVEN SAYS IT IN THE SAME EPISODE???? Vickie and her boyfriend. Vickie who is paralleled to Mike. Her boyfriend who came to Hawkins for spring break. CRAZY!!!
I'm adding the links on the posts with Byler/Rockie parallels here, here, here and here (credits to @thranduel @kaypeace21 @willandmichael and @bylerisrequited ).
Robin says: “In the face of the world ending, the stakes of my love life feel spectacularly low.” And I remembered Ted with his “It’s strike 20. You’re on the bench, son.” But Lucas who was on the bench hit the final ball and they won. But Erica who was a substitute rolled 20 and won. 10s on Mike and Will’s rollers. Only together they win.
Steve tries to convince Robin that there's something wrong with these relationships and he "still has hope." STEVE IS US. And what do we hear from Vickie in the last episode??? She and her boyfriend broke up. “I should’ve just ended things right there and then.” Does it remind you of anyone? I guess there’s no need to write who.
What I found interesting is that we see a small poster that says RELIEF AID on it (= Robin feeling relieved by knowing Vickie is single) and FOOD is written on the table. Hopper and Joyce also were talking about food before their kiss. Who we don’t see eating food in s4? Mike. El also doesn’t eat Eggo’s he brought her. But they eat pineapple pizza, though Mike calls it “blasphemous” at first (here are some food references.) And we also have these “sweetie pie” mentionings. Very and very interesting. Food and love are somehow intertwined. Vickie says: “I’m rumbling about my dumb boyfriend where there are people out there suffering. Who need…food. All you need is love. That’s what Matthew Modine posted on Twitter when being asked about s5 endgame.
Her dumb boyfriend wished her “Good luck” and Mike says finding El in the woods was “a simple dumb luck”, ARE YOU KIDDING ME????
One last thing that was already mentioned by some great minds. Steve is holding a blue & yellow (Mike and Will) t-shirt while putting a red one (El) aside. And there’s a birthday reference. Vickie gives Robin a sandwich as a gift saying: “Early birthday.” Whose birthday was forgotten and he had no presents? Will. We will have the scene where Mike gives him a gift (maybe even with a letter signed “Love, Mike”) and him saying: “Belated birthday.”
Not only the camera does the same exact movement for both of these moments slowly pulling away to create a feeling of intimacy between them but Vickie and Robin are also in the same spot as the character they are meant to create a parallel with (Vickie =Mike / Robin = Will) and they are both around food...
OMG wait…….is robin seeing vickie and her bf together at the gun store in 4x8?! if so……what if it’s worded similarly in the script to the nicki minaj forehead touch/look toward will??????
CHLOOOOO OMG WAIT I LITERALLY JUST HAD TO GO CHECK THE TRANSCRIPT FOR PAPA
ROBIN SEES VICKIE AND HER BOYFRIEND IN 4x08 BESTIE YOU ARE ONTO SOMETHING HERE
milevens desperately trying to deny the byler and rockie parallels by saying that will being blurred in the background makes it different will never not be funny to me because...they know what it means if they acknowledge that it was intentionally done. they know it would be game over for them. it would immediately debunk all their arguments that
they wouldn’t make a character queer if they’re already dating/dated someone of the opposite gender (it actually doesn’t matter if you think a character “appears straight” they can still do an uno reverse card on you!)
they wouldn’t break up a straight couple for a gay one (surprise! they’re breaking up vickie and her bf for rockie so following that pattern...)
the writers are trying to be realistic in the 80s context...because if they can give robin reciprocated love and her own happy fullfiling relationship then why wouldn’t they be able to do the same with will 🤷♀️ so much for “realism” right? because they already went to hell with that for robin!
also maybe their argument would hold a bit more water...if not for the fact that...
they pretty much even paralleled m!leven’s storyline this season with vickie and her bf’s LMFAO (and here’s a more comprehensive comparison of both relationships)
i mean...neither of those spring break visits ended up going well, did they 🤔
they used the same music for the scene of vickie ranting to robin about her relationship problems and mike ranting to will about his relationship problems in the van 😭 sawrry but this one is simply an unavoidable connection that you can’t just call an accident!
like the parallels arent just visual. the dynamics and arcs of BOTH relationships/love triangles are actively being paralleled whether people like it or not! the sooner they’re able to accept this, the sooner they’ll realize they’re setting themselves up for disappointment 🥱
