“You lying, cheating thief!” Ushijima rasped angrily. He was met with a blank look. If Oikawa was doing it to feign innocence, he couldn’t tell. The brunette just looked at him blankly, but in case he attempted to prevaricate, Ushijima was quick to add, “I know it was you, Tooru. Nobody else could have known where I put it, so don’t even try to get off the hook.”
Oikawa’s right brow twitched upward, a small inconspicuous gesture that screamed his defiance despite its discreetness. He said nothing and continued to stare at the olive-eyed male, his long legs crossed casually as he sipped on the drink Ushijima offered earlier. It was as if Oikawa did not hear a thing he said, not even the accusations which were otherwise hurtful under normal circumstances, but then Ushijima realized that his guest wasn’t even normal. He is Oikawa Tooru - genius extraordinaire, only heir to his father's conglomerate, but under all that, he was something no one expected him to be, someone of a darker nature.
“I trusted you,” Ushijima droned on, his tone taking a desperate lilt. “But you’re actually a thief. I have been entertaining a thief!”
His tirade was getting tedious, and Oikawa thought he owed it to him for guessing right that it was indeed him who stole the Ushijima clan’s prized possession. “The best in the world,” he said smugly, his lips curling at the sides. His chocolate eyes were still unrelentingly fixed on Ushijima, feeling no shame, not even when he was being confronted for his crimes. "And you, my sweet, are an easy target."
Ushijima paced on the floor, evidently losing his temper. “Where is it? I’m guessing you sold it to the highest bidder. And for what? What were you thinking falling into such a profession? Why are you even doing it?”
He did not understand at all. He hasn’t done anything to Oikawa for him to be motivated to steal the Starlight from him, but then again, it was the Starlight. Like its thief, it was just as extraordinary as far as heirlooms go. Anybody would want it, precisely why he had it in the first place. If it wasn’t that, he still did not understand the motivation behind it since Oikawa was twice as rich as he was and could afford to have most anything he wanted including the bejewelled necklace in question.
In the brown-haired male’s systematic manner, he answered every query thrown at him. “That, I cannot tell you, but you can be sure it’s still in my possession as of the moment. Only an insane lune would sell the Starlight to those who could actually afford it. As for the reason I stole it from you,” he straightened up on his seat, squaring his shoulders, his demeanor cold, “it’s nothing I could tell you, my dear Wakatoshi.”
The way Oikawa addressed him made him shiver in indignation. After all, Ushijima always insisted on Oikawa calling him by that name, but he never really complied being the playful little imp he was. If anger wouldn’t solve the issue, he was going to do everything just to get the jewels back.
He kneeled on the carpet, eyes imploring as he regarded Oikawa, his fingers gently brushing the latter’s porcelain skin. “Is this a disorder of some sort, Tooru? If you return the jewels to me, I’ll help you. That’s a promise, my love.”
Oikawa chuckled, looking positively evil. Ushijima found the need to inch back and straighten to his full height upon seeing that look on his face. He didn’t think Oikawa Tooru was capable of such expressions with his almost always happy if not smug demeanor.
“Why do people always assume that it’s a disorder? That’s an excuse I don’t need. The help you offer, that’s something I need even lesser, and if this is insanity, I do not care to be helped either.”
At that, Ushijima’s temper rose even higher. “But you can afford to acquire such treasures. Why don’t you just buy it?”
Oikawa tilted his head to the side in that manner which made every cell in Ushijima’s body to tingle as if they’re awakening to the call of a master he didn’t even know existed until he met the coffee-haired devil before him. “Where’s the thrill in that?”
“What?!”
Oikawa knew that Ushijima understood him perfectly, still he refused to believe it. Being born into privilege, things become trivial. Getting what one wants all the time made it less exciting to acquire things, even if they were as precious as his beloved Starlight. “Come now, Toshi, sweetheart. Think about it. This is beauty we are talking about, beauty that the earth itself yielded. To acquire such things, one must go through risks. Your kind desecrates the value and beauty of such things by equating it to money.”
“So, you just attend auctions to look for your next prospect?” he hissed, remembering the first time they met in Monte Carlo six months ago at the same auction where the Starlight was showcased.
“Why yes, of course, though I must say it is a disgrace to these entities of pure beauty. Call it an obsession, a kind of madness if you will, but personally, once I’ve set my eyes on something that I want, it is torture for me to let other people see it, touch it. I’d rather have it destroyed than have others witness its beauty, owned by others, or in this case, I simply hid it somewhere you can never find it.”
Oikawa grinned at him. “Don’t you think it adds more beauty to the Starlight now that its whereabouts is a mystery? No one knows who the current owner is or if there is actually an owner. It’s gone now and no one can ever know where it is. It’s even more beautiful now that it is the case. Isn’t it why you keep it in your silly little vault?”
“If you wanted it then you could have just told me.”
“Yes, you said you would give me anything, Wakatoshi, but then it would go against my principles. If I want something, I will get it, definitely, but not in the means that normal people would do so. I’d hate to put a price tag on these things, and I would definitely not lower its value by making it serve as a charity case offering.”
“Charity –” Ushijima was so appalled that he couldn’t continue what he was about to say, growing livid as he fixed his eyes on Oikawa, smoldering coals against the latter’s cool brown ones. “Do you really think I would give it to you out of charity? Tooru, I bared my soul to you…”
Oikawa sighed and stood up from the chair, striding towards the Ushijima leisurely, unafraid that he would come after him. “Now you know, but no matter how much I explain it to you, you will never understand. Another mystery in the grand scheme of things. Is it not beautiful?”
“Tooru!” He raised a finger towards the person in question. “Stop right there.”
Oikawa did pause under the lintel of the door, looking over his shoulder, his unspoken question loud and clear. He had nothing to do with Ushijima anymore and he was dismissing him just like that. As always, Oikawa played on his own terms without negotiating.
“Give it back to me.” Ushijima pleaded and Oikawa didn’t know whether he was asking for the jewels or the pieces of his obviously shattered heart, but he didn’t ask.
“And if I don’t?”
“Then I would have to turn you over to the authorities.” His tone was grim, but Oikawa was not moved at all.
“Do what you want. You know where to find me, my love.” He shrugged as if he had been in a state of tedium all along, but had it in him to backtrack and stand directly in front of Ushijima, gently reaching over to plant a kiss just at the side of his mouth. When Oikawa felt him responding by placing a hand on the small of his back, he grabbed Ushijima’s arm, shaking his head as he smiled evilly. It was just like him to keep baiting the other until he was begging for more, but he wasn’t about to give him anything.
Then, he leaned forward and whispered, “Your threats are empty and even if I told you that I did it, the law could only do so much. You have no physical evidence and I have no motive. We both know you won’t do it anyway.”
“Why is that?”
“Because you love me, silly.” With those words, Oikawa walked away, throwing his jacket over his shoulder and taking his time to leave.
The moment he was gone, Ushijima chuckled without humor, shaking his head as he drank the bourbon that Oikawa left. With a wicked grin adorning his face, he grabbed his car keys and walked out the door.
“I’m coming for you, you little devil. Just you wait.”

Ushijima attempts to be romantic by throwing rocks at Oikawa’s window to coax him out and invite him on a midnight stroll.
He ends up breaking the glass window pane because he’s so strong.

“I can give you my answer again, and again until you understand, if you’re willing,” he finally leans in, slowly as if to give Oikawa an option to retreat, to react, to push him away if he wants. To Oikawa’s own surprise, this agonizing wait feels like forever and he himself eagerly inches forward to meet Ushijima halfway.

I listened to the lyric “ill be going to this coffee shop. hear the barista call an oat milk latte in your name and I’ll look up from my phone & think theres no chance its you but it is. you’ll say hi I’ll say hi how are you youll say how’s your family how’s your sister I’ll say shannons being shannon after a minute of nonsensical chatter you’ll say well this was really nice maybe we should do this on purpose some time and… itll have been long enough… that we won’t harp on…
arguments in your garage
all the ways we sabotaged it
what it was and what it wasn’t”
and I wrote a whole ushioi fic about it…
(“it’d be so nice? right? right? if we could take it all off and just exist. and skinny dip in,, water under the bridge”)

“Surprise engagement party!” Sugawara explains, “Well, a mini-party, to celebrate you and Ushiwaka finally making it official!”
Startled, Oikawa chokes on nothing, sputtering his words until he can finally formulate his oh-so-elegant rebuttal, “Ushiwaka and I aren’t engaged, what the fuck?”
Oikawa is surprised to be thrown an engagement party. His friends are more surprised to find out that Oikawa is not actually engaged.

Hajime took a deep breath and knocked on the heavy oaken door.
 “...who is it?”
“It’s me, Shittykawa. You called for me?”
Through the door, he heard hurried footsteps, the door unlocking, and then it flung open, revealing his best friend, Oikawa Tooru - who looked absolutely handsome in his three-piece linen suit.
The light brown of the fabric complimented his hair and coloring, and the light purple and teal of his bowtie and pocket square just accentuated his handsomeness. He also looked about three seconds away from a mental breakdown.
“Iwa-chan!” Oikawa wailed as he grabbed him by his suit lapels and dragged him in the room, closing the door behind him.
Hajime’s eyes widened in alarm. “Whoa, Oikawa. Take a deep breath and breathe. What’s wrong?”
He gingerly removed Oikawa’s hands from his suit and started patting his back soothingly.
Oikawa sighed and looked into his eyes, “Iwa-chan, am I making a huge mistake?”
Hajime stopped patting his back. “Wait. Are you serious?”
“Iwa-chan, please tell me that I’m not making a huge mistake. I need to hear you say it.”
Hajime’s mouth fell open in disbelief. “What. The. Hell. Shittykawa. We are 1 hour away from your wedding ceremony, and you’re getting cold feet now?” He sighed. “Do you not love him?”
Oikawa gasped as if offended by the implication. “No! I love Wakatoshi with all my heart.”
Hajime sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Then, do you think that Ushijima-san doesn’t love you?”
Oikawa let out a huff. “No, I’m pretty confident that he loves me. Maybe more than I love him. Like just a little bit more.”
Hajime wanted to hit his head against a wall. Or strangle Oikawa. He couldn’t decide. “Then what’s the issue?”
“It’s just that…” Oikawa sighed. “You know how I’m competitive and can be petty at times, right?” Hajime gave him a look that said, and this is news to me...how? “And Wakatoshi knows all this! Yet he chooses to be with me? And to marry me? What is wrong with him?”
This time, Hajime really had to fight the urge to headbutt Oikawa. It wouldn’t be good to get blood on his wedding suit. “You fucking idiot. The question you should be asking is what the fuck is wrong with you?” Oikawa stared at him, eyes wide and mouth agape.
Hajime continued, “You found someone as fantastic, loving, emotionally stable, and not to mention fucking hot in Ushijima. And not only that, he’s willing to put up with you and your hot mess? You should be thanking him. In fact, we should all be thanking him that he’s willingly taking you off of our hands.”
Oikawa blinked. “You think Wakatoshi is hot?” Hajime rubbed his temples. “Fuck. If that’s the only thing you got out of that, then you’re okay. Nothing else I said was new, right?”
Oikawa shook his head, tears starting to pool in his eyes.
“Shit-” Hajime muttered, quickly handing him a handkerchief.
“No, I know all of that! I’m lucky that I have him, I really am.” Oikawa sighed and buried his head in his hands.  “It’s just that these thoughts creep into my head from time to time, y’know?”
Hajime sighed. “And how long have you had this particular thought?”
“...a while.”
“Well, dumbass, it’s a fucking stupid thought, that’s what it is. And I’m sure if you told Ushiwaka this, he would say the same thing.”
Oikawa looked up at him, eyebrow raised. “Well, he probably wouldn’t call me a dumbass.”
“He should.” Hajime retorted. He ignored Oikawa’s sputtering and continued, “From what I see - this changes nothing. You love him, he loves you. You just need to be thankful for once. Now hurry up and go get married.”
He turned to leave the room, but before he opened the door, Hajime turned back to smile at Oikawa. “You’re not making a huge mistake. If anything, this is the correct choice. Congrats, Tooru.”
Oikawa sniffled and wiped his eyes. “Thanks, Iwa-chan. I’ll see you downstairs?”
“I’ll see you there.”

Does anyone have some good finished baroaso, ushioi, oikage, bokuroo, kurotsukki, gladnis, kazumaji, vashwood, aokise, or todobaku fics to rec where the main ship is mostly healthy/functional or at least gets better as the story goes?
It doesn't need to follow canon closely, and I'll read pretty much anything as long as it's not very ooc and doesn't have a bad or sad ending. Thanks!! 🖤
