Garden Report & Frugal Living 24.04.12
Today we managed to get a bucket of sand from the beach before the weekend rains appear. Also planted in pots some old seeds, really crammed them in thickly because I am so late and not sure if they will even germ . Note to self: harvest dates are important especially if you have a tendency like me to over purchase/horde seeds/trade seeds. And make sure they are sealed well! I spilled a great deal of Peshawar poppies because inner glaceing bag was haphazard and another bag of some sort of bean was in open plastic (is that mold or inoculation?). I planted out the beans thickly in a glow box not wanting to take up space for about 75 bean plants. If they come up it will indeed be a pleasant surprise! and even more if the voracious creatures stay off! So here is what is planted:
Peshawar poppies
calendula
early cabbages (hope they won't bolt)
purple broccoli (hoping for cooler grow season so no bolt)
yellow mangels/beets
pole beans
spring onions
guava seed (saved seeds, idk but I am guessing they may be pineapple guava from fruit we receive every year)
giant prague celeriac (giant celery root)
white pickle cucumber
tiger toms (red paste toms with green stripes)
flat leaf parsely
basil (genovese/sweet style)
I have some black polish radish that is suppose to be sweeter than the spainish variety but those I need to direct sow.
The ants are still in grow box #2. I thought I had gotten them out last year but no such luck. I will need to find some terro boxlettes.
The purple asparagus has quickly sent up a spear. No sign of any others. I collected seeds off of it last year and I really should plant but I'm not sure I can commit to the slowness of it (about 8 weeks to germinate!).
There is so much I want to plant this year but I need a major clean and if I get settlement, there may be enough for roof but the tear off will generate a huge amount of waste and even with tarps down, many things will probably die due to impact and workers' boots so definitely can not do guerrilla gardening along the flower beds and shrubbery.
Currently foraging lilac blossoms. I dry them and place in jars for tea.
The quince is just loaded with blossoms! I have never seen this many flowers! We love quince so hoping for good pollination and much fruit. The red fleshed apple is starting to bloom as is the pears -- yes, the little asian pear may pull through! The raspberries are also starting to bloom. The pots I propagated last year need to find homes or be planted. I need to pull weeds from the white currant transplants. This is the year I need to transplant my little persimmons I grew from seed if they survived. They make a long tap root first so its essential to find a good spot -- no moving them around!!
Once again, too slow on the pruning! The birds are setting up housekeeping. The collared doves once again are trying to nest in the garden. I'm hoping that the neighbors will mellow out. They are becoming more aware of the songbirds that frequent my thicket (there really is a method to my madness... for some things).
Frugal tip: do you knit or crochet? do you want to learn but don't want to commit to a large project? got an old t-shirt? with a pair of cloth scissors, cut your t-shirt into a continuations ribbon about the width of your little finger or half that width. Roll your t-shirt 'ribbon in a ball. From the thrift store or if you have a crafters borrowering library get like maybe number 6-8mm knit needles/ crochet hook. Most craft stores also have economy priced needles/hooks if you want to invest and learn. You can knit/crochet a 'sample' sqare and use it as a wash cloth for your dishes. You can do this trying out new stitches as well with cotton yarns (look in thrift stores, rummage sales and craft discount sales). This way you are learning a new skill, recycling a spent object and hopefully being enthused and having fun. It might even become a hobby!
So my friends, get outside! Grow a garden, get a hobby and grow yourself in the process!

"Chicago’s 82-story Aqua Tower appears to flutter with the wind. Its unusual, undulating facade has made it one of the most unique features of Chicago’s skyline, distinct from the many right-angled glass towers that surround it.
In designing it, the architect Jeanne Gang thought not only about how humans would see it, dancing against the sky, but also how it would look to the birds who fly past. The irregularity of the building’s face allows birds to see it more clearly and avoid fatal collisions. “It’s kind of designed to work for both humans and birds,” she said.
As many as 1 billion birds in the US die in building collisions each year. And Chicago, which sits along the Mississippi Flyway, one of the four major north-south migration routes, is among the riskiest places for birds. This year, at least 1,000 birds died in one day from colliding with a single glass-covered building. In New York, which lies along the Atlantic Flyway, hundreds of species traverse the skyline and tens of thousands die each year.
As awareness grows of the dangers posed by glistening towers and bright lights, architects are starting to reimagine city skylines to design buildings that are both aesthetically daring and bird-safe.
Tumblr media
Pictured: Chicago's Aqua Tower was designed with birds in mind.
Some are experimenting with new types of patterned or coated glass that birds can see. Others are rethinking glass towers entirely, experimenting with exteriors that use wood, concrete or steel rods. Blurring lines between the indoors and outdoors, some architects are creating green roofs and facades, inviting birds to nest within the building.
“Many people think about bird-friendly design as yet another limitation on buildings, yet another requirement,” said Dan Piselli, director of sustainability at the New York-based architecture firm FXCollaborative. “But there are so many design-forward buildings that perfectly exemplify that this doesn’t have to limit your design, your freedom.”
How modern buildings put birds in danger
For Deborah Laurel, principal in the firm Prendergast Laurel Architects, the realization came a couple of decades ago. She was up for an award for her firm’s renovation of the Staten Island Children’s Museum when the museum’s director mentioned to her that a number of birds had been crashing into the new addition. “I was horrified,” she said.
She embarked on a frenzy of research to learn more about bird collisions. After several years of investigation, she found there was little in the way of practical tips for architects, and she teamed up with the conservation group NYC Audubon, to develop a bird-safe building guide.
The issue, she discovered, was that technological and architectural advancements over the last half-century had in some ways transformed New York City – and most other US skylines and suburbs – into death traps for birds...
At certain times of day, tall glass towers almost blend into the sky. At other times, windows appear so pristinely clear that they are imperceptible to birds, who might try to fly though them. During the day, trees and greenery reflected on shiny building facades can trick birds, whereas at night, brightly lit buildings can confuse and bewilder them...
Tumblr media
Pictured: A green roof on the Javits Convention Center serves as a sanctuary for birds.
The changes that could save avian lives
About a decade ago, Piselli’s firm worked on a half-billion-dollar renovation of New York’s Jacob K Javits Convention Center, a gleaming glass-clad space frame structure that was killing 4,000-5,000 birds a year. “The building was this black Death Star in the urban landscape,” Piselli said.
To make it more bird friendly, FXCollaborative (which was then called FXFowle) reduced the amount of glass and replaced the rest of it with fritted glass, which has a ceramic pattern baked into it. Tiny, textured dots on the glass are barely perceptible to people – but birds can see them. The fritted glass can also help reduce heat from the sun, keeping the building cooler and lowering air conditioning costs. “This became kind of the poster child for bird-friendly design in the last decade,” Piselli said.
The renovation also included a green roof, monitored by the NYC Audubon. The roof now serves as a sanctuary for several species of birds, including a colony of herring gulls. Living roofs have since become popular in New York and other major cities, in an inversion of the decades-long practice of fortifying buildings with anti-bird spikes. In the Netherlands, the facade of the World Wildlife Fund headquarters, a futuristic structure that looks like an undulating blob of mercury, contains nest boxes and spaces for birds and bats to live.
The use of fritted glass has also become more common as a way to save the birds and energy.
Earlier this year, Azadeh Omidfar Sawyer, an assistant professor in building technology in the Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture, working with student researchers, used open-source software to help designers create bespoke, bird-friendly glass patterns. A book of 50 patterns that Sawyer published recently includes intricate geometric lattices and abstract arrays of lines and blobs. “Any architect can pick up this book and choose a pattern they like, or they can customize it,” she said.
Tumblr media
Pictured: The fritted glass used in Studio Gang’s expansion of Kresge College at the University of California, Santa Cruz, depicts the animals in the local ecosystem.
Builders have also been experimenting with UV-printed patterns, which are invisible to humans but perceptible to most birds. At night, conservationists and architects are encouraging buildings turn off lights, especially during migration season, when the bright glow of a city skyline can disorient birds.
And architects are increasingly integrating screens or grates that provide shade as well as visibility for birds. The 52-floor New York Times building, for example, uses fritted glass clad with ceramic rods. The spacing between the rods increases toward the top of the building, to give the impression that the building is dissolving into the sky.
Gang’s work has incorporated structures that can also serve as blinds for birders, or perches from which to observe nature. A theater she designed in Glencoe, Illinois, for example, is surrounded by a walking path made of a wood lattice, where visitors can feel like they’re up in the canopy of trees.
Tumblr media
Pictured: The Writers Theatre, designed by Studio Gang, includes a walking path encased in wood lattice.
Rejecting the idea of the iridescent, entirely mirrored-glass building, “where you can’t tell the difference between the habitat and the sky”, Gang aims for the opposite. “I always tried to make the buildings more visible with light and shadow and geometry, to have more of a solid presence,” she said.
Gang has been experimenting with adding bird feeders around her own home in an effort to reduce collisions with windows, and she encourages other homeowners to do the same.
“I’ve found that birds slow down and stop at feeders instead of trying to fly through the glass,” she said.
While high-rise buildings and massive urban projects receive the most attention, homes and low-rise buildings account for most bird collision deaths. “The huge challenge is that glass is everywhere.” said Christine Sheppard, who directs the glass collisions program at the American Bird Conservancy (ABC). “It’s hard to know what I know and not cringe when I look at it.”
Tips for improving your own home include using stained glass or patterned decals that can help birds see a window, she said. ABC has compiled a list of window treatments and materials, ranked by how bird-safe they are.
Whether they’re large or small, the challenge of designing buildings that are safe for birds can be “liberating”, said Gang, who has become an avid birdwatcher and now carries a pair of binoculars on her morning jogs. “It gives you another dimension to try to imagine.”"

Hi, hello! This is a strange question but would you mind summarising or at least, link some posts about diets of all the Mimic species you've done so far? It's so to reference ^^;
(PART 1) Most mimics are carnivorous and hunt skibidis for food. Most mimics don't hunt the alliance because the alliance doesn't have edible parts for them to eat (plus they mimic them for a reason so they can lure in unsuspecting skibidis) due to their primarily inorganic nature. So attacks on alliance units are more over territory then a desire to consume. Camera Mimics eat pretty much anything they can fit in their mouths. Be it a rat, bird, fish, or even an entire skibidi parasite in one bite. They hunt in packs within human-abandoned cities and towns, and primarily have carnivorous diets, so they rarely eat vegetables. They can, but it doesn't make up the bulk of their diets. They can also eat whatever has been left behind by the humans in large supermarkets and grocery stores that have primarily already been picked clean by the wondering Camera Mimic packs. They are also very hardy eaters and can eat old, expired, or (only if a mimic is desperate enough) carcasses and cadavers. Speaker Mimics are also primarily carnivores, but have a varied diet depending on where the species is located. In sanctuary (aka primarily underground), they have crops that they grow to help balance out their diets. Usually roots, tubers, bulbs, and rhubarb that can be grown in the dark and damp conditions underground. Seaside variants (like Clif) eat fish, seaweed, and invertebrates they catch in the body of water they live near. Snowy variants eat meat mostly, usually jerky and fish because it keeps really well in colder climates. Desert variants eat a much wider plant variety then meat, with cactus, avocados, chilies, and any lizards they can catch. TV Mimics aren't that picky either. Their mouths are usually large enough to consume anything in one large chomp, though they will still have to chew their food. They also frequent urban areas like Camera Mimics and reflect their diets in a similar manner. They eat rats, birds, lizards, stray animals...pretty much anything that isn't an alliance member is fit to be consumed by these mimics. They are also the most successful hunters in the mimic world, able to take down larger skibidis through their psychological manipulation that can feed themselves for days. TV mimics are also sadistic and will also eat their prey alive if they can. Some are merciful and kill their prey before consuming them, and some are not. They will rip a limb off while the prey is helpless and incapacitated, then give them medical care to make sure the prey doesn't bleed to death. In their words, it keeps their prey "fresh". Primarily meat eaters and very few will have a varied diet, one exception to this is Hypnos who lives on Elisa's farm and has a varied diet.

Title: SkillScape Chronicles: Journey of the Life Skiller
Episode 1: "The Gamer's Odyssey"
In the heart of a bustling metropolis, nestled amidst towering skyscrapers and bustling streets, lies Fellreen's cozy home. His humble dwelling serves as a sanctuary amidst the chaos of urban life, offering him a haven where he can find solace and respite after long days spent navigating the hustle and bustle of the city.
Stepping into his dimly lit room, adorned with posters of his favorite video games, Fellreen feels a sense of calm wash over him. The soft glow of his computer screen casts a warm light across the space, beckoning him to indulge in his favorite pastime.
With a fervor unmatched, he settles into his well-worn gaming chair, the familiar hum of his computer filling the room as he navigates to his favorite virtual realm – SkillScape. In this digital universe, hunting, farming, woodworking, and alchemy are not just mundane tasks, but the very essence of life itself.
As he immerses himself in the immersive landscapes and vibrant communities of SkillScape, Fellreen loses himself in the thrill of the game. With each click of his mouse and press of a button, he becomes a master of his own destiny, forging his path through the virtual wilderness with unmatched skill and determination.
But little does he know, his ordinary gaming session is about to take a fantastical turn. Unbeknownst to him, the lines between reality and fantasy are about to blur, as a mysterious force begins to stir within the depths of SkillScape, beckoning him towards a destiny he never could have imagined.
With the click of a button, Fellreen embarks on a journey that will take him beyond the confines of his mundane existence, into a world of adventure, magic, and endless possibilities. And as he delves deeper into the mysteries of SkillScape, he will discover that his true journey is only just beginning.
As Fellreen delves deeper into the intricacies of the virtual forests of SkillScape, his senses are overwhelmed by the sights and sounds of the digital wilderness. The rustling of leaves, the gentle sway of branches, and the distant call of unseen creatures create an immersive experience unlike anything he's ever encountered.
Lost in the beauty of the virtual world, Fellreen's concentration is suddenly shattered by a blinding light that floods the screen. With a startled gasp, he shields his eyes, instinctively recoiling from the unexpected brightness.
When the brilliance finally fades, Fellreen slowly lowers his hands, his heart pounding with a mix of excitement and confusion. Blinking rapidly, he takes in his surroundings, his mind struggling to process the surreal scene before him.
Gone is the familiar glow of his computer screen, replaced instead by the breathtaking vista of a lush, verdant landscape. Towering trees loom overhead, their branches reaching towards the azure sky in a silent embrace. The air is alive with the melodious symphony of chirping birds and rustling leaves, a cacophony of nature's harmonious melodies.
Stunned and disoriented, Fellreen takes hesitant steps forward, his gaze sweeping over the unfamiliar terrain. Every detail is rendered with stunning realism, from the dappling sunlight filtering through the canopy to the delicate flutter of butterfly wings.
With each breath, he can feel the crisp freshness of the air filling his lungs, the earthy scent of loamy soil mingling with the sweet fragrance of wildflowers. It's as if he's been transported into a world of pure, unadulterated beauty, where the boundaries between reality and fantasy blur into insignificance.
As the initial shock begins to ebb away, a sense of exhilaration courses through Fellreen's veins. He realizes with growing excitement that he has been inexplicably transported into the very world he had been exploring through his computer screen – the world of SkillScape.
As Fellreen stands in awe of his surroundings, a profound stillness descends upon the forest, broken only by the resonant voice that reverberates through the trees like a gentle breeze.
"I am the Guardian of SkillScape," the voice intones, its timbre deep and resonant yet imbued with a sense of serene power. "Welcome, traveler, to this sacred realm."
Fellreen's heart skips a beat as he listens, his senses tingling with a mixture of apprehension and wonder. There's an undeniable aura of authority surrounding the Guardian's words, yet beneath its commanding tone lies an unmistakable sense of peace and tranquility.
"You have been chosen for a momentous task," the Guardian continues, its voice echoing through the forest with a sense of solemnity. "But I must warn you, traveler, of the looming threat that shadows this land."
Fellreen's brow furrows in concern as he listens intently, the weight of the Guardian's words sinking in.
"A dark force has arisen in SkillScape – the demon army," the Guardian explains, its voice tinged with solemnity. "Driven by malevolence and thirst for power, they seek to enslave all of mankind, plunging this realm into eternal darkness."
Fellreen's heart clenches with a sense of dread as he realizes the gravity of the situation. The fate of SkillScape hangs in the balance, and the lives of its inhabitants are at stake.
"Please, traveler," the Guardian implores, its voice softening with urgency. "I beseech you to lend your aid to the people of this world. They look to you as their champion, their beacon of hope in these dark times."
With determination burning in his chest, Fellreen nods solemnly, a newfound resolve coursing through his veins.
"I will do whatever it takes to protect this realm and its people," he vows, his voice firm with conviction.
Moved by Fellreen's resolve, the Guardian extends a hand, offering him a choice of magical weapons to aid him in his quest. Fellreen takes a moment to consider, his mind racing with possibilities.
Drawing upon his experience in the game, Fellreen selects a yumi, a traditional Japanese bow, and a katana, a symbol of honor and strength. With these weapons in hand, he feels a surge of confidence, ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead.
And so, with the Guardian's words echoing in his ears and his chosen weapons at his side, Fellreen sets forth into the unknown, his heart filled with determination and courage. For in this enchanted forest, where the boundaries between reality and fantasy blur into insignificance, the fate of SkillScape rests in his hands, and he will stop at nothing to ensure that light triumphs over darkness.

since i moved back to the city after school there really has been a really solid push towards ecological restoration, at least in the area i live. a park i used to go to day camp at has converted a big chunk of manicured lawn to native prairie, we aren’t the only house on our block with a yard full of native plants either. a bird sanctuary that was established when I was in high school has expanded and added ADA accessible trails over the past ~5 years. it’s very heartening to see these urban ecological restoration projects succeeding and proving that there’s a place in major cities for this work

hello! was just going through the urban rescue ranch tag and saw your post from a lil while back and was just wondering if you could elaborate on why you think he's an animal abuser? I'm not any kind of expert on that sort of thing but it looks like he takes very good care of his animals, so I was wondering how you formed this kind of opinion?
hi!
Just so you know I am personally not an animal sanctuary/rescue expert, its just one of my special interests, I'm pretty sure someone who actually works in a rescue can elaborate more
Secondly I used to be a fan of his youtube channel, however I stopped watching after I learned more info about how animal rescuing actually works, I think I stopped watching when he adopted a crocodile? So there is a chance he corrected the stuff I bring up here and I just don't know
Now onto the actual list:
He keeps Kevin despite being aggressive, instead of euthanizing him like he should have (the ethics of euthanizing aggressive animals is a whole other topic I can elaborate later) he instead fights with him, which is obvious animal abuse, I personally don't know if aggression is hereditary with big birds but the fact that he also lets him breed is also slightly concerning
He doesn't properly quarantine or sex his animals, something that is basic for practically all animal rescues, there was a whole incident with Big Ounce because of this in which he didnt know his "mate" was actually another male, I have heard stories of some rabbits that died because they were not properly quarantined but I'm not fully sure
He takes his non-tamed animals outside for some reason? Once he took Big Ounce to walmart, there is really no reason to do that other than to be funny and in most cases it puts the animal in more stress
When rescuing animals he handles them with no protection, just bare handed, this is something that does not only show that he's not responsible, but that could also harm the animal in some cases (most amphibians have sensible skin)
He kinda just lets Big Ounce free roam??? Does he want him to get eaten by an eagle???
This is just the ones that come to mind right now

Save Cedar Lake Park!
In the spring of 1989, Glacier Park Company was selling a large plot of land – 48 acres on the north shore of Cedar Lake. A group of concerned neighbors founded Save Cedar Lake Park (SCLP) with a mission to “Establish a nature park on the north and northeast shores of Cedar Lake and along the railroad right-of-way from Cedar Lake to Highway 100.” This unique urban nature preserve would link together the Chain of Lakes, Mississippi River, and western Minneapolis suburbs with a pedestrian and bicycle corridor and would complete a grand vision for the city parks.
In January 1990, the Metropolitan Council of Minneapolis unanimously approved a recommendation to add the Cedar Lake Park initiative to the Park and Recreation Board’s existing capital improvement plan. By summertime, discussions were already in motion with the Nature Conservancy, State officials, and Glacier Park Co. to accomplish early acquisition.
Market value for the land was $1.7 million. The Metropolitan Council Open Space Commission approved $1.2 million in funds if SCLP could raise the remaining, which came to roughly $560,000. For the next two years, Save Cedar Lake Park organized a massive fund-raising push involving public education initiatives, newsletters, and a benefit concert, picking up a Committee on Urban Environment (CUE) Award along the way. The Minneapolis Chapter of the Audubon Society even pledged their entire Sanctuary Fund ($15,000) to SCLP, hoping to sway legislators. The “birders” felt this was the closest they could get to having a bird sanctuary.
30 years ago, in November 1992, SCLP presented the city with $473,000 citizen-collected dollars, the largest amount of public money raised to buy a piece of land in the state of Minnesota. And on November 25th, 1992, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, adding their $1.2 million contribution, purchased the land from Glacier Park Co., securing the future of Cedar Lake Park.
In 1995, construction of Phase One of the Cedar Lake Regional Trail was completed and the corridor has continued to grow and change in the years since--with prairie, a cedar grove, and maple and basswood forest. Most recently, construction of the Southwest Light Rail Project has further changed the area.
The Cedar Lake Park Association Records are currently being reorganized and processed by Michael V., one of our archival processing assistants hired as part of a $50,000 Legacy grant received by Special Collections this year. The grant supports processing many of our Minneapolis neighborhood association archival collections.

Pop The Question
The parks of Chicago were a scenic, tranquil place. In the middle of the urban sprawl, the lush sanctuary provided a space of serenity. In lieu of the ever-present hustle of city life, the soft breeze and eclectic chorus of birds replaced the cacophony of car horns and chatter present in the streets. A small pocket of quiet, a reminder of natural life within the urban jungle.
However, despite the park being unusually barren that particular night, the atmosphere would not be so still. The rip-roar of motor engines cut through the usual silence, racing through the heart of the park. Two cruisers rode along the stone path, one jet black and the other dark green. The bellows of the bikes flew over the fields, blades of grass whipping violently in their wake. Eventually, the two riders slowed as they turned a bend. To their right was a hill, an old elm adorning the top. Its leaves glistened under the setting sun, a golden sheen shining against deep green.
With a click of the clutch, the two steered onto the grass, nearing the base of the hill. Squeezing their brakes, they came to a stop. They cut their engines and tapped down their kickstands. The rider of the black cruiser dismounted, removing his helmet. Large, fluffy mouse ears spilled from the polymer, green specs glinting against the sunlight.
“Well, I’ll be damned.” The rider of the other bike spoke.
From xyr helmet, light green fur was revealed. Everest’s pointy, blue ears flopped as xe shook xyr head, xyr fur flowing in the fresh air. “You were right, its a ghost town out here.”
“See? I may not be a native Ev, but I know my way around chi-town well enough.” Throttle returned, subtle snark in his voice.
“That you do,” Everest chuckled, turning to the hill. “C’mon.”
Throttle followed, smiling behind xem. As the two crested the hill, they could see across the northern section of the park. Peaceful, grassy fields sprawled all around them, overlooked by the surrounding skyline. The centerpiece to the view was a lake, spanning about forty feet wide. The skyscrapers reflected in its calm ripples, mixing with the hues of the setting sun.
Everest sat down against the elm tree, sighing slightly. “Picked a nice day at least.”
“Yep, nice of Illinois to stop raining on us for a change, huh?”
“Indeed. Of course it rains buckets the day Limburger decides to launch a scheme of his.”
“I’ll admit, using rain to channel melted steel into the sewers was creative.”
“Not creative enough to succeed anyway.” Xe chided jokingly. “You think he’d come up with some better plans with how long he’s been at this.”
“Can’t say if the stink fish has any cognitive planning ability, but we’ll be here to put a stop to whatever he’s got up his sleeve.”
“Hey, it’s what we do.” Everest turned xyr gaze to the water as xe sighed “Gotta say though, I never expected to end up as a vigilante; especially on another planet.”
“What can I say, life comes at ya in unexpected ways.” Throttle shrugged.
“That’s certainly one way to put it. One minute I’m on Caynaris, living a normal life, then the next thing I know I’m a galaxy away.”
“Guess a change like that takes some getting used to.”
“Yeah.” Xe looked up to the sky. “Do… Do you ever miss Mars?”
Throttle’s tone turned solemn. “Of course I do. Everything I knew was there. Fought a war to defend it.” He tipped his head back, admiring the orangey sky. “But, I’ve found a lot of things to love on Earth. Found Chicago, Charley, people who accept us. And I found you.” He turned to xem.
Everest blushed. “When you put it like that, guess you’ve got a point.”
“Even the small things; like this lake for example. We don’t have large bodies of water on Mars, any water that’s not in the ice caps runs in underground veins. To the people of Earth, it's just a lake like any other, but it's kind of a wonder to me.”
Throttle then stood, starting to walk towards the lake. Everest rose quickly to follow him.
“I’m no brainiac, but I’ve learned to appreciate what makes ya happy, no matter your situation. Obviously it won’t solve all your problems, but they add up in the end.”
“I think that’s a very noble mindset to have.” Everest said. “You can’t control everything in your life, but you can choose to focus on what you love.”
Now standing at the edge of the lake, the two found themselves contemplating as they stared across the water.
“Though, if I’m honest, I’m most grateful that I met you.”
Xyr eyes widened. “Really?”
“That’s right. We both ended up on earth from less than favorable circumstances, but we made the best of it. You never let anything stop you, Ev. You’re one of the fiercest fighters I’ve ever seen, and can always find your way out of a tough spot. Even outside of battle, you don’t take shit and know what you want. You protect those you care about, and create a sense of stability. You’re just incredible overall, and I wouldn’t change a thing about you.”
In a rare moment, Everest smiled sheepishly at his words. “Thank you, I’m flattered you think so highly of me.”
“‘Course. I would go on, but I do have a point to this.”
Xe raised a brow as Throttle cleared his throat.
“Everest,  you’ve changed my life in so many ways. You’ve been there for me in my low points, and celebrated with me in my high points. No matter what’s been thrown at us, we’ve come out on top, together. I can’t predict the future, but I know I want you by my side when I turn to face it.”
He dropped to one knee, digging something out of his pocket. “Guess that leaves me with the question,”
He drew a small box from his pocket, and upon opening it, revealed a silver earring.
“Will you marry me?”
Everest stood in shock, mouth agape. Then, a smile spread across xyr face, tears welling as xe laughed.
“Yes.”
Throttle’s face lit up as he stood, wrapping his arms around xem and kissing xem deeply.
“You have no idea how happy I am to hear that.”
“That makes two of us.” Xe giggled.
Throttle took the earring from the box. “On Mars, it's a tradition to propose with a silver earring. Figured I’d implement a part of my own culture, heh.”
Everest studied the earring, admiring it. “It’s beautiful, I love it.”
“Glad you do.” He raised his hand slightly, looking at xyr right ear. “May I?”
With a nod, Throttle gently clasped the earring onto xyr ear. After making sure it was secure, he stared in awe as it glinted in the sunlight.
“It looks perfect on you.”
Everest grinned widely as xe looked up at him. “I love you, Theno.”
“Love you too, Everest.”
The two kissed once again, fully engulfed in their happiness and the presence of each other. They remained in the embrace for what seemed like hours, time slowing as they basked in the moment. While neither wanted it to end, they both were excited to see what their future would hold,
Together.

Urban Forests Create a Birdlife Boom in New Zealand Cities – Even Species Absent for Generations https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/zealandia-park-creates-bird-species-boom-in-wellington/
Just ten minutes beyond the center of Wellington lies a wild paradise, where the birdsong of as many as 40 species ring out above hikers.
The massive urban forest of Zealandia is helping prove that if you restore native forest in cities, native species will come back, and for a place with as unique an ecology as New Zealand, that’s all the more important.
The park, described as an eco-sanctuary, is delightful on its own, but it’s having a halo effect on bird communities in suburban, and even urban areas of the nation’s capital.
The Zealandia model drove researchers to investigate whether native tree density in and around cities resulted in an increase in native bird species. To get an answer, they examined 25 urban forest projects totaling 72 years of work. They found that the longer the reforestation work, the greater the diversity of native species.
Furthermore, populations of invasive predators like weasels, cats, possums, and rats, which were logically thought to be a reducer of population, had no affect in areas reforested with native tree species.
Opened in 1999, native birds have since increased during annual counts by 50%, while for some species that aren’t rare but shy away from cities, those figures are much higher. The numbers of kākā had increased by 250%, kererū by 186%, and tūī by 121% (the Māori accents denote a long vowel, i.e. “too-ee.”)
“In the 1990s seeing a tūī in suburban Wellington was a big deal, let alone a kākā,” Adam Ellis, a keen birdwatcher in Wellington, told the Guardian, reporting on the news. “Zealandia … created such a change in bird life that birds like tūī became a common garden bird.”

Today was just me, my chemo fatigue, and 450 acres of urban eco sanctuary 💖💕🩷💖💗💘💕
(And about 62729293637282 native birds. I couldn't do the harder tracks, but even the gentler ones were still wildly Jurassic Park esque. Suuuuper cool to see so many once near extinct native species thriving again)
