Save Cedar Lake Park!
In the spring of 1989, Glacier Park Company was selling a large plot of land – 48 acres on the north shore of Cedar Lake. A group of concerned neighbors founded Save Cedar Lake Park (SCLP) with a mission to “Establish a nature park on the north and northeast shores of Cedar Lake and along the railroad right-of-way from Cedar Lake to Highway 100.” This unique urban nature preserve would link together the Chain of Lakes, Mississippi River, and western Minneapolis suburbs with a pedestrian and bicycle corridor and would complete a grand vision for the city parks.
In January 1990, the Metropolitan Council of Minneapolis unanimously approved a recommendation to add the Cedar Lake Park initiative to the Park and Recreation Board’s existing capital improvement plan. By summertime, discussions were already in motion with the Nature Conservancy, State officials, and Glacier Park Co. to accomplish early acquisition.
Market value for the land was $1.7 million. The Metropolitan Council Open Space Commission approved $1.2 million in funds if SCLP could raise the remaining, which came to roughly $560,000. For the next two years, Save Cedar Lake Park organized a massive fund-raising push involving public education initiatives, newsletters, and a benefit concert, picking up a Committee on Urban Environment (CUE) Award along the way. The Minneapolis Chapter of the Audubon Society even pledged their entire Sanctuary Fund ($15,000) to SCLP, hoping to sway legislators. The “birders” felt this was the closest they could get to having a bird sanctuary.
30 years ago, in November 1992, SCLP presented the city with $473,000 citizen-collected dollars, the largest amount of public money raised to buy a piece of land in the state of Minnesota. And on November 25th, 1992, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, adding their $1.2 million contribution, purchased the land from Glacier Park Co., securing the future of Cedar Lake Park.
In 1995, construction of Phase One of the Cedar Lake Regional Trail was completed and the corridor has continued to grow and change in the years since--with prairie, a cedar grove, and maple and basswood forest. Most recently, construction of the Southwest Light Rail Project has further changed the area.
The Cedar Lake Park Association Records are currently being reorganized and processed by Michael V., one of our archival processing assistants hired as part of a $50,000 Legacy grant received by Special Collections this year. The grant supports processing many of our Minneapolis neighborhood association archival collections.

Part One: Beginning⭕
We open on a dirt parking lot. It seems to be a busy day as the lot is filled to the brim with vehicles. Most people are here to enjoy the nearby Cloudy Quartz Lake. A few people are here to walk the gentle trails through the pines and cedars. And a further few are here to hike the surrounding mountains. Most of these mountaineers have their vehicles clustred in the south end of the parking lot, save for a light blue pickup truck.
This truck belongs to our subject, Matt. Mat is an anthro brown bear. He is about 23 years of age. His fur is a deep brown with a splotchy strip of blonde running around his neck. He is of average height and a tiny bit overweight. He is wearing a t-shirt that is nearly the same shade as his truck, a red hoodie, and a pair of blue jeans (definitely secondhand) and a raggedy baseball cap with slits cut out for his ears (Ballcap likely passed down from family member). He is fairly athletic but also fairly nerdy. He is just as likely to play video games as he is to hike a mountain.
Mat slowly stepped out of his truck. It had been a long drive to get here, but he had done it. It was his grandpa's dying wish that he returned to this park and hike the tallest peak. It was fitting as it was the first mountain matt had climbed with his grandfather. However, this time, there was a supposed surprise for Matt in the cabin near the summit.
Matt was just excited to be there. Heck, the view from the parking lot was almost its own reward. A view of the pristine lake surrounded by towering trees and craggy peaks. There was also now a cafe and a convenience store next to the parking lot and activity rental places. Matt knew his grandpa wouldn't have been a fan of the new amenities. Matt's grandpa was a hardcore hiker and didn't approve of any newfangled gizmos or locations.
"If you can't hike without city things, yer best not to leave the city" echoed the words of Matt's grandpa in his head.
The words quickly left Matt's brain as his face contorted, and a loud yawn echoed from mouth. Some of the other park patrons looked at him in surprise and / or disbelief. Matt smiled at them sheepishly, blushing in embarrassment.
Then Matt hauled his gear out of the back of the truck. It wasn't much as he didn't expect to be there for more than a day. The gear felt a little bit heavier than usual, probably due to Matt's tiredness from driving for so long.
"I should probably get something energizing to drink." Mat said to himself.

It was the morning of November 2nd– a few days after Cedar Point had closed for the 2023 season. As customary for the first days of the off-season, Steel Vengeance— also known by the nickname “SteVe”— would take things easy. One way he’d do this was through sleeping in late, turning off his alarm(s) and placing his phone in “do not disturb” mode.
However, SteVe had set his phone to shut off the “do not disturb” mode by 10:30 am— and once it did, he immediately got a call. SteVe was pulled out of a dream through the sound of his ringtone, a song Cedar Point created in the late 90s to use in their adverts.
SteVe let the call go to voicemail, wondering if he should go back to sleep and deal with it later. Then, a text notification went off— and out of the corner of his eye, SteVe noticed the number of messages that crowded his phone’s lock screen. Clearly, something had happened.
SteVe slowly sat up in his bed, groaning. “Better have a good reason to call me…” Grabbing his phone, SteVe clicked the power button to show his lock screen. He finally gets a good look at the notifications; 5 missed calls and several texts, all from his half-brother New Texas Giant. While the calls didn’t go through, SteVe can see the messages left for him— “Hey. Been tryin’ to get in touch with you but you didn’t pick up. Call back if you see this”. “Are you awake? Please call back”. “There’s something we need to talk about. Tried calling you four times, no response. If you’re up, call me”.
Still groggy from his rude awakening, SteVe didn’t think much of these messages despite their somewhat-urgent tone. SteVe had been talking with “Tex” all night— nothing seemed to be wrong a few hours ago. Regardless, SteVe decided to call him back.
“Tex, I’m trying to sleep in this week— what’s with the calls? Are the Diamondbacks holding the World Series trophy hostage or something?”
SteVe wouldn’t be prepared for what response came next.
“Cedar Fair and Six Flags are merging”.
SteVe was immediately skeptical.
“C’mon, you’re pulling my leg”.
No response.
“Right?”
Still no response.
“…Tex?”
SteVe got a text message; it was a social media post made by an officially-sanctioned Six Flags account.
“We are excited to announce a strategic combination with Cedar Fair to create a leading amusement park operator. We look forward to creating an even more engaging and accessible guest experience”.
Under the post was a link to an article detailing the plans for the merger.
As if to hammer the point in further, SteVe received another text message, this time containing a presentation used by Cedar Fair to explain their reasoning for the merger during their most recent investor’s call.
SteVe was in shock.
“You’d think I’d lie about something like this?”
“I…I’m sorry for doubtin’ you, Tex”.
“I saw an article talkin’ about the possibility of a merger yesterday, but didn’t think much of it. We’ve gone through these talks before, and not once has it actually happened. But then it did”.
SteVe rubbed his forehead.
“How many parks do they own now?”
“Forty-two. Though if it’s just the amusement parks, twenty-seven. Either way, they’re taking all of ‘em”.
“…Fuck. That’s too much”.
“That’s what I was thinkin’! The last time Six Flags got a whole bunch of parks in the chain, they ended up selling them after a few years. ‘course, this was also durin’ their spending spree, so it didn’t help their debt…”
“Yeah, and the last time Cedar Fair got some new parks, they shitcanned Geauga Lake without warning and left Big Dipper to decay while they squeezed whatever they could out of the waterpark— and then closed that once it was no longer useful”.
“I know things have changed and this is a different circumstance, but I can’t help but worry. Our parks— yours especially— should be fine, but for others…I hope another operator can save ‘em”.
“Speaking of…I guess the fact that we still got SeaWorld and Herschend means that this ain’t a monopoly. Feels like one, though”.
“Well, we still have a few months before the merger’s official. It could get blocked, but I have a feeling it won’t”.
“Then I guess this is the new reality we’re livin’ in, huh.
“I’ve already got in contact with some of the other park leaders— we’re going to hold a chain-wide summit once the merger’s complete. It’ll provide us a space to voice our concerns and introduce ourselves to one another. We’re thinking 1-3 representatives for each park; you should tell Magnum and Millennium about this when you get the chance”.
“I can do that. Though speaking of…what do we even call our parent company now? Is it some kind of mismatch between the two, or did one company win out?”
“So, the new chain will be called Six Flags— it has better brand recognition— but Cedar Fair’s CEO is the leader and its stockholders have majority, though not by much. The parks will not be rebranded one way or another, at least not right now. DC/Looney Tunes and Peanuts are sticking around, but want to keep up with the non-IP lands CF has been doing. They do want to change the skip-the-line system and have a season pass that gets you into all the parks”.
“Well, at least I won’t have to deal with seeing a “Six Flags” sign in Ohio again…”
“I’m sure they would keep Cedar Point around even if they did Six Flags-ify some of the other Cedar Fair parks”.
“True, but you never know with these corporate-types”.
There’s a pause.
“So…I guess we just. Go on with our days now. Knowing that our chains are going to be one in the same”.
“Guess so, though I’ll be tied up with contacting everyone for the summit. To think I was watching the game a few hours ago, completely unaware of what I would wake up too…”
“I think all of us are in that camp— though anyone genuinely expected this to happen, I’ll give them five dollars”.
“I think the more shocking outcome is finding someone who wanted it”.
“Well, the Great Americas might’ve— now they’re under the same chain again…until CGA gets bulldozed, cause CF didn’t even wait for the merger to fuck them over”.
“I almost forgot about that— truly saddening to see another park go the way of Astroworld”.
“Let’s just hope more don’t meet the same fate”.
Their conversation ended shortly afterwards. That day, SteVe expected to be focused on tending to his collection of indoor plants, as the temps kept him from working on his garden outside. Now, all he could think of was this merge and the uncertainty it brought with it.
“Someone’s going to get fucked over by this, aren’t they? And all I’ll be able to do is watch as it happens…”

ZYXEL 10 GSWITCH INSTALL
At first glance, these two switches look the same. S1250-8T2F is an 8 ports Gigabit PoE+ managed switch with 2 SFP ports. S1130-8T2F is an 8 port PoE switch with 2 SFP ports. Let’s compare these switches: S1130-8T2F and S1250-8T2F. PoE switch and PoE+ switch are designed based on different IEEE standards. The maximum amount of power for the 802.3af standard is 15.4 W and the maximum for the 802.3at standard is 30 W. The big difference between IEEE802.3af and IEEE802.3at is the maximum amount of power they provide over Cat5 cable. Therefore, IEEE802.3at standard was promoted to offer more power for high-power PoE devices, for instance, cameras with high-power IR illuminators, IP telephones, small network printers etc. But it can’t meet the power needs of many devices. IEEE802.3af standard supports the network devices that require up to 13 W of electrical power. IEEE802.3af standard was established in 2003, upgraded to IEEE802.3at in 2009. To answer this question, we have to learn these IEEE802.3af (PoE) and IEEE802.3at (PoE+) standards. IEEE802.3af (PoE) and IEEE802.3at (PoE+) Standards PoE+ switch? Find answers in the following article. What’s the difference between these two switch? Can we use PoE switch vs. In the market, if you are careful enough you can find some are marked as PoE switch and some are PoE+ switch. PoE technology is time-saving and money-saving for cable installation by carrying electrical power over network cable.

Another day! Whew! I was at Starbucks in Merrilville, Indiana which is in the Westfield/Southlake Mall parking lot near home in Winfield, IN.
Broke & renting an apartment from my parents out in Winfield, IN while enjoying blogging I frequented the many Starbucks in the area. Since then the Starbucks across the street from the mall & at the Radisson closed. I went to both of those Starbucks back then.
The fun up to date post board inside the Merrilville mall parking lot Starbucks was my Starbucks mermaid crown above my head where I was sitting. I was drinking my Starbucks in about the year 2016. Somewhere circa around there…
A young clean cut good looking gentleman walked in the door. He came up & posted something on the post board above my head. Casually I started talking to him. I asked him what he was doing…
It was Frank Ruvioli and he was marketing his music. He was not much older than my only daughter. I took down the info & started listening to his music immediately.
It was great!
Have been trying to see him live in the area since then. Maybe one day soon…
Tumblr media
I want to drink some nonalcoholic wine & get to know Frank live. He plays at Andersen Winery in Valparaiso, Indiana & I have tried to see him play at Rosatis pizza where my daughter & her husband have since that time I have met him have jobs in the management. They work at the one in Cedar Lake, Indiana owned by the same owners as the Crown Point, Indiana Rosatis.
Frank even does real estate.
Tumblr media
Once by surprise I ran into Frank at the downtown Crown Point, IN library and have seen this Ruvoli genius play songs live on Facebook strumming his guitar looking good.
So youthful…
Listen to his song “Butterfly” on mailchimp.com & his YouTube Christmas song below in this blog. Frank sent those to me years ago & I saved them now blogging about it.

masterlist - ao3 - day five - day seven
<3<3<3
Elide stands in the doorway of her loft apartment, empty save for the cheap furniture that was already here when she moved in.
Her slender, sloped eyes fill with tears and she folds her arms across her body, her hands gripping the opposite sweater sleeve. She doesn’t hear or sense the person walking down the hall until they’ve wrapped their arms around her shoulders and kiss the top of her head, “You good?”
Tilting her head up, she looks into Lorcan’s dark, depthless eyes. “Kind of.” Elide leans into her fiancée and sighs shakily, her vision blurring. “I’m going to miss this place.”
“Me too,” Lorcan says, resting her chin on top of Elide’s head. “We had our first kiss here.”
Elide grins, “Yeah… we said our first ‘I love you’ here, too.” They’re silent for a long moment, thinking and reminiscing. Elide is the first to move. She turns in Lorcan’s arms and smiles up at her, “I think I’m ready to go now.”
Her fiancée drops her hand to Elide’s lower back. “Ok. We have time, you know. You don’t have to rush this. I know you loved your apartment. It was your home.”
Elide lifts onto the tips of her toes and kisses Lorcan gently, her hands looping around Lorcan’s neck. “I know.” She bumps her nose into Lorcan’s and pulls back slightly, so that they still share a breath. “But I’m ready to go. To our home.”
A happy grin steals across Lorcan’s face and she presses her lips to Elide’s. Elide melts against her, one hand sliding to Lorcan’s cheek. Lorcan’s teeth graze over her bottom lip and she sucks Elide’s lip into her mouth, licking her tongue over the small hurt. The motion pulls a moan from Elide’s throat.
When they pull apart, their chests rise and fall faster than usual. Elide sweetly pushes Lorcan’s hair back and steps away, bending down to pick up the last box. It has her most valued possessions, like movie ticket stubs from dates, a rock from the lake near her childhood home, a strip of photos from a photobooth. “It’s time.”
Lorcan nods and Elide slips the key off of her keychain. She leaves it on the counter and takes Lorcan’s hand, squeezing twice. Lorcan smiles and they walk down to her truck. Elide fits the last one in the truck bed next to the others. She walks around to the passenger seat and climbs in, grinning at her fiancée.
The dark woman’s eyes sparkle and she starts the engine, reaching over to turn Elide’s face, “I love you, Lee.”
Elide smiles and bites her lip, “I love you too, L.” She kisses Lorcan’s palm and pulls the hand on her face down to her lap. As Lorcan begins to drive, Elide opens her window and leans towards it, letting the golden, brilliant sun shine across her face.
The air is warm and sunshiney, coaxing a wide grin across her face. Lorcan glances over and smiles at the sight of her girl so happy. She lifts Elide’s hand and kisses her knuckles, resting their joined hands on the centre console.
Their new bungalow is only fifteen minutes away. Lorcan parks in front of the front gate and they step out, meeting by the tailgate.
For the next hour, they move all the boxes into the living room. Elide divides different sections that relate to the different rooms and stacks the boxes that Lorcan carries in in neat piles. When Lorcan tries to put a heavy box, labelled BEDROOM, down, Elide stops her, gasping like she’s committed some crime against humanity. “Oh my gods, Lorcan, were you even listening?! That’s the kitchen pile, bedroom stuff goes over there.”
Lorcan arches her brow and slowly puts the box down in its correct spot. “Lee…”
Elide looks at her and sighs, “Yeah. I’m just- I want it to be perfect.”
Lorcan snorts and slides behind Elide, sweeping her up in a tight hug. She nips at the skin beneath Elide’s ear and whispers, “It’s us, when are things ever perfect?”
“Put me down, you big bully!”
“Oh, now, no need to be rude,” Lorcan says, finally letting Elide free. She pivots sharply and frowns up at Lorcan, her arms angrily crossed. Lorcan steps forward and cups Elide’s face, lifting it up. She strokes her thumbs over Elide’s strong jaw, “Sweetheart.”
“Lorcan.”
“I think you should step back for a couple minutes, maybe eat something, drink some water.”
“Stop trying to baby me.”
Lorcan clicks her tongue, “I am not babying you, I’m taking care of the woman I’m marrying in three months.” She bends her head to press a series of soft kisses across Elide’s face. “I got this. Go for a drive, or something. Just get out of here.”
Elide is still frowning as she begrudgingly agrees, “Fine. You’re probably right.” She closes her eyes and sighs through her nose. When she opens her eyes, she looks up at Lorcan and nods, offering her an apologetic grin. “Thank you. For taking care of me.” Elide stands on her tiptoes and kisses the sensitive spot beneath Lorcan’s jaw.
Lorcan rubs Elide’s back, “You’re very welcome.” For a moment, they remain frozen in their gentle moment. Elide rests her face in the hollow of Lorcan’s neck, breathing in that cedar perfume that is so familiar to her. Lorcan’s arms loosen, and Elide calmly steps back, the frown melted from her face.
She takes Lorcan hands and presses her lips to Lorcan’s knuckles, “I’m going. I’ll get us food.”
Lorcan grins and kisses Elide’s forehead, “Will you get me a coffee?”
“I will,” Elide promises, walking backwards towards the door after she takes the keys out of Lorcan’s pocket. Once she reaches the door, she turns and flashes Lorcan a wide grin, the freckles on her cheeks shifting, “Be back soon, babe.”
“Yeah, not too soon,” Lorcan warns, slowly making her way to the open door. “Love you, sweetheart.”
“Love you too, hon.” Elide blows her a kiss and waves her fingers. Lorcan smiles and closes the door, breathing out a sigh of relief. With Elide gone, she can actually get things done.
She pulls her phone out of her pocket and opens the calling app. Lorcan calls the person she always calls.
It rings for a while and Lorcan waits patiently, knowing exactly what the golden nightmare is doing.
“Salvaterre,” Aelin purrs, “how can I help you today?”
“Feel like distracting Lee?”
Aelin laughs, “She still freaking out about the move?”
“Mmm-hmm,” Lorcan leans to the side, glancing out of the living room window. She sees the truck becoming smaller and smaller. “I made her leave for food so that gives us, like… half an hour at most.”
On the other end of the line, Aelin hums in contemplation. “Ok… I’ll see where she’s at and intercept and I’ll send the cavalry to you.”
Lorcan watches the truck disappear around the corner. “‘t’s nice to know that you can be helpful once in a while.”
Aelin sniffs, “I like being unpredictable. Anyhoozles,” Lorcan hates that word, “I’m off. I’ll bring her back in, what, six hours?”
“Yep. See you then, Ash.”
Aelin says good-bye and they both hang up. Lorcan opens Spotify and scrolls through her playlists, smiling when she sees the new one Elide has to have made. It’s title simply with the date it was created. She presses shuffle play and puts it down on the fireplace mantel.
The first song that plays is upbeat and fast. Lorcan recognises it almost immediately and a smile pulls at her full lips.
I can’t remember when we met because she didn’t have a top on… top on…
I improvised a ‘lil bit - she said my references were spot on… spot on…
Softly, Lorcan starts to sing along, “‘Can I take you for a drink?’ She said, ‘Oh god, I’ll have to think, ‘cause we’re mates it doesn’t feel right?’”
And I said “It’s cool” and “I was messing”...
But it’s true, yeah it’s you
You’re the one that makes me feel right…
By the time she’s listened through seven more songs, Lorcan has unpacked the kitchen boxes. She lifts her head when she hears three obnoxious voices and frowns out the window, watching her brothers walk up to the front door.
She loves them, and they’re the closest thing to family that she has, but… they're just so irritating.
“Ay, yo, Salvaterre! Where you at?”
Lorcan pauses her music and walks into the living room, clicking her tongue, “Take your shoes off, you animals.”
They all dutifully take their shoes off and stack them to the side. Fenrys bounds over, his afro bouncing. “Hey, man, how are you?”
“I’m good,” Lorcan says, accepting the obligatory hug Fenrys traps her in. A reluctant smile appears on her face and she hugs him back, “How are you?”
“Same old, same old,” Fenrys replies, bouncing back and looking around. “So, where do you need us, boss?”
“Uh…” Lorcan thinks as she daps Rowan up. “I don’t know yet. The kitchen is done, so… any place, I guess.” Fenrys nods and sets off determinedly to the boxes taking up most of the living room space.
Connall claps Lorcan’s back as he passes, “I’ll supervise.”
“And I’ll super-supervise,” Rowan says, grinning widely when Connall and Fenrys squawk in offence.
“Oh, I see you just let anyone in your house, huh?”
Lorcan turns when she hears her cousin’s voice, sharing the same dry grin, “Yeah, you know Lee would kick my ass if I turned the strays away.”
Vaughan slings his arm around her shoulders and rests his head against hers. “How’d you convince her to leave?”
“Reason. And I sent G to stall her,” Lorcan says.
He snorts and soon they’re all unpacking boxes. Lorcan tells them to leave the bedroom and office boxes alone. The latter are Elide’s, and Lorcan knows that she’ll want to fix it just so. As for their bedroom, Lorcan wants to put it together with the woman she shares it with.
The sun has just begun to dip beneath the horizon when they’re finally finishing up. Lorcan stares at a picture of her and Elide, wondering if she should move it elsewhere.
“Lor? You ok?”
She snaps her head to the side. She forgot she was alone for a moment. “Yeah, I’m ok.” Lorcan looks around, her brows raising. Everything is unpacked. It looks like their home now. She smiles a rare smile, the one where both her dimples show. “It looks… incredible, guys. Thank you, this… it meant a lot, or whatever.” Her shoulders start to bunch up, tense. Lorcan has never been comfortable with praise or affection, but she tries. Elide makes it easier.
The boys mumble ‘You’re welcome’s, equally unused to it as she.
Rowan’s phone dings, so he pulls it out. When he sees the text Aelin sent him, he chuckles, “Apparently Aelin cannot stall Elide any longer. They’re on their way here, be here in… ten minutes.”
“Right, well, that’s our cue,” Connall says, shoving his hands into his pockets. “We’ll let you surprise your girl and stuff.”
Unwillingly, Lorcan feels her cheeks heat. As Fenrys walks out, he catches her blush and laughs, “Aww, she’s blushing. Who knew that Hellas’ heir had feelings?”
She reaches out and slaps him upside the head, “Yeah, keep pointing it out, Fen. We’ll see if I don’t beat your dumb ass.”
“Easy, easy,” Vaughan says, stepping between them and gesturing for Fenrys to leave as fast as he could. “Cool it, killer. We’re just saying that it’s, you know, it’s nice to see you like this.”
Lorcan steps back, her spitfire anger calmed. She lets a small smile show, “Thanks. It’s… it’s Elide.” Her smile grows softer and the boys laugh as they file out to their cars. Lorcan leans against the porch column, joking with them as they leave. “I’ll see you guys later.”
She waves and walks back inside, anxiously pacing in front of the door. Her phone rings and she snatches it out of her pocket, accepting the call before she sees who it is. “Hello?”
“Hi, honey,” Elide says. “I’m almost home. I’m so sorry you had to do everything alone, I saw Aelin and she needed to do a bunch of things.”
“Don’t worry about it. You had a good day, right?”
Elide sighs, “Yeah. Honestly, I’ve just been so caught up with the move and the wedding. It was nice to not think about any of it today.”
“I’m glad,” Lorcan says. “Are you going to be home soon? I miss you.”
Her fiancée laughs, “Needy, needy. I’ll be there soon. Love you, L.”
“Love you too, princess.” Lorcan pulls the phone away from her ear and ends the call. She sits down on one of the armchairs to wait and idly takes a book off of the nearest shelf. Flipping past the first few pages, Lorcan settles in and rests her chin on her fist.
Headlights shine through the front window and they’re nothing but a nuisance to her until she realises who it is. Lorcan puts the book back and stands, crossing to the front door. She opens the door as Elide climbs out of the truck, a bag of takeaway in her hand. She lofts it, smiling ruefully, “Will you forgive me for abandoning you today? I got you your favourite.”
Lorcan grins as Elide walks up the stone pathway. “I might.”
Elide steps onto the porch, “We can eat and then start unpacking the rest?” She doesn’t wait for Lorcan’s response before she walks past her and pushes the door open. “I– it’s all done. How is it all done?”
Lorcan follows her in and looks around proudly. “I might’ve asked Aelin to stall you. And I called in the cavalry.” She tucks Elide into her side, “They really are helpful when you tell them exactly what to do.”
Her fiancée laughs tearfully and puts their food down so she can walk around, her eyes bright. “This… this is exactly what I wanted.”
Elide spends the next half hour looking around and getting used to their new home. She pokes around the living room and the kitchen too, fawning over the seemingly thousands of potted plants they have.
Lorcan watches with an adoring expression, completely entranced by everything Elide does.
Spinning, Elide holds her hands out to Lorcan. “Come.”
As always, Lorcan does as Elide tells her and stands up from the table chair she was sitting on. Lorcan takes Elide’s hands and looks down at her, one brow arched, “What is it, Lee?” Without a word, Elide starts to swing and sway. Lorcan follows warily, still unsure what Elide is trying to do. “Princess…”
“Just dance with me, love,” Elide says.
Lorcan hums in understanding and lifts Elide’s hands to her shoulders. Hers loosely rest on Elide’s waist and Lorcan begins to dance, leading Elide around their cosy kitchen. Elide beams and presses herself forwards, her head tipped against Lorcan’s chest. Lorcan’s heart trips over itself and she bends her head to hide her smile in Elide’s dark hair. The bergamot shampoo she uses clings to the thick, rich tresses.
The only music is their soft feet padding and sliding across the colourfully tiled floor. Elide grins wildly when Lorcan spins her out. Her head tips back and the silver light of the moon washes over her ethereal face.
Lorcan’s breath catches in her throat. She wants to be consumed by Elide. In near reverence, Lorcan cups Elide’s face. She tilts it back, slowly marking every feature. “You…”
“What,” Elide laughs, her hands squeezing Lorcan’s waist.
“The moon looks just right right now,” Lorcan murmurs, delicately tracing the way the light slides over Elide.
Elide’s smile turns tender and loving. She takes Lorcan’s hand and silently leads them into the backyard. They sit on the cool grass, Elide leaned against Lorcan’s chest, sitting between her legs.
“So,” Lorcan begins, her lips brushing against the shell of Elide’s ear, “is it everything you’ve ever wanted?”
Elide shakes her head, “No. I’ve only ever wanted one thing. And I've already got it.”
“Oh, really? Care to tell me what it is?”
“You,” Elide says, simply. “A life with you, a home…”
“And now we have a home.”
“No,” she shakes her head and turns, kneeling between Lorcan’s spread legs. “Don’t you get it?”
“Get what?”
“That you are my home.” Elide holds Lorcan’s face in her hands like the most rare of presents, “And you always have been.”

random random thoughts. id do a readmore but im on mobile sorry LOL
sometimes it's just so crazy to me that for so many years cedar point was just some memory my family would talk about here and there. i'd watch the really old tapes they had of their times there, in fascination, because i wanted to experience it too. except every year it just seemed to become a silly joke, almost a myth, i'd never get to experience this place. the closest i ever got was a road trip, where we drove past sandusky. i never saw the park, but the joke was there. this place nagged at my mind every year. every year was a "we should go to cedar point" joke, because something was so compelling about this amusement park i knew so little about.
and now, here we are. this place that seemed to be so far out of reach is now an every day occurrence in my life. i've been going to cedar point almost every single day for the past 3 years. the amusement park i knew so little about became an amusement park i know so much about. something that felt like a myth is something so real. and it saved my fucking life. without this silly park on a lake that i begged to go for years & years, i wouldn't be here. and it's all so, so wild to think about. when they say cedar point is a place like no other, they truly mean it in the most genuine way possible

Survey #374
“doctor, doctor, won’t you please prescribe me something?  /  a day in the life of someone else...”
Does someone have a crush on you but you don’t feel the same way? No. Who do you feel most beautiful around? No one. What’s one makeup item you cannot live without? I could live without any makeup. What’s the most expensive thing you own? My snake, I think. Or my laptop, idr. Are you more of a book person or a TV person? Book. Relationship status? Single. What color are most of your clothes? Black. Did you french kiss before you were 16? No, I was 16. Last song you listened to? "The Heretic Anthem" by Slipknot. Would you ever go back to any of your past relationships? Yes. What’s your favorite thing about life? That's a big question. I guess seeing acts of mass love and kindness, reminders that we're all in this together through all hardships. Who pays for the first date? Whoever asked the other person out, imo. Who has always been there for you? My mom. Have you ever written on a wall? No, at least not to my memory. Do you play any computer games, if so, what ones? I think anyone who reads these by now knows, haha. I don't much play anything else. I prefer console games. What would you name a baby boy if you had one? Probably Damien or Victor. What would you name a baby girl if you had one? Alessandra, no questions asked. What lyric means the most to you? I mean there's tons, but the first one that came to mind is "for such a little thing, you sure are in your own way" from "Get Up" by Mother Mother. Like in the big picture, we humans are so so so minuscule, but with brains that are too complicated for our own good. It's my own head that creates so many obstacles for me. Who is the smartest person you know? Probably my friend Girt. Have your parents ever been to jail? No. Do you share a bed with anyone? My cat, haha. Does it flatter you when guys open doors for you? It's flattering if anyone does, not just guys. Do you enjoy taking naps? Yeah. That's like part of my daily routine. If your friend asked you to hold their drugs, would you? Nope. Is there anyone you try to be a good influence for? My nieces and nephew, but I don't feel like I am. I'm a poor example of an adult. Do you own a pair of fishnets? No, but I have a pair of fingerless fishnet gloves. Which do you prefer: french toast, bagels, pancakes, waffles, bacon or cereal? All are great, but french toast. Yes or no: eyebrow piercings? I'd actually have one if I didn't have glasses. I think I'd look weird with one as I look now. When I say "The Beatles," what is the first song that comes to mind? "Hey, Jude." In your opinion, what is the very worst type of weather? Extremely hot and humid. You can only listen to one band for the rest of your life, who do you pick? Ozzy Osbourne, of course. Can you snap with both of your hands? Yeah, but it's harder with my left. What is something that you had to learn the hard way? For some people, promises don't mean shit. If you could re-paint your bedroom, what color would you paint it? Maybe like a light peach. When was the last time you got butterflies? I think not since Sara told me I look really pretty in eyeliner. ;_; <3 When was the last time you felt like your heart was actually breaking? There was this one time I was listening to "The Ghost of You" by MCR a while after finding out about Jason's mom's death and I just like... broke. When’s the last time you were in a line? When I was getting my second COVID shot. Do you trust the media? HA! Fuck no. If you could kill off one species of animal, which would it be? At first I was appalled by this question, but like... do wasps serve a purpose? Of all fauna, they annoy me the most. I mean bees are already endangered enough, and they prey on them. They don't pollinate, so like... why are you here. I may be mistaken and they have a valuable role, in which case I take all this back. Who’d you last say I love you to? My mom. What’s the most overpaid job in your opinion? I have on idea. Most jobs are underpaid. What’s the last thing you wrote down? I was doing some paperwork at the TMS office on my first day there. When’s the last time you heard a gunshot? I don’t know. What are you looking forward to? Now that my tattoo (which looks fucking stunning, by the way) is out of the way, I can focus on other things. I'm particularly looking forward to hopefully seeing the results of TMS manifest (which should take 3-4 weeks). It sounds horrible, but I'm also keenly awaiting this dog we're stuck with to go somewhere... The person who gave her to my sister to give my mom won't take the dog back, and we can't find another option that doesn't risk her being euthanized, which we absolutely do not want. We just don't know what to do, but she's driving Mom and me INSANE. Do you listen to online radio stations? No. Have you ever done something sexual that you regret? No. Have you ever said anything to the last person you kissed that you regret? Multiple things. Have you ever ate so much you puked? Ugh, no. That sounds awful. Do you care about what others think of your physical appearance? Very much, sadly. Would you rather eat cookies or brownies? I gotta say brownies. Which YouTuber have you learned the most from? I mean, this depends on the subject. From Mark, I've learned most about life and how (I think) to be a good person, but there's a lot of pet channels I watch that have taught me loads about proper husbandry. This answer just depends on what knowledge you're talkin' about. Who would you want to be the flower girl at your wedding? Probably a niece. Do you want to be married within the next ten years? It'd be nice. Do you feel like your life is too fast-paced, or do you wish it were busier? Ugh, I wish it was busier. My days are a COMPLETE, routine drag. What are some hobbies which you want to pick up? I want to just be more artsy. I wanna draw and write more, and I'd love love love to be in healthy enough shape to handle going on walks with my camera. There are sometimes I miss editing videos, too. I'm unsure about completely new hobbies. Does anyone encourage you to go after your dreams? My family and a few friends. Oh, and definitely my psychiatrist. What group are you most active in on Facebook? None, really. I mostly just observe. Are you ashamed of anything? A number of things. Primarily not having a job at my age or even being in school. What were your favorite Disney rides as a kid? I loved Splash Mountain, I think it was called. What were your favorite rides at Cedar Point? Never been. What are some places you want to visit that you’ve never been? South Africa, Alaska, Canada, Yellowstone National Park, Bahamas, Venice, Rome... What are some places that you’ve been that you’d like to go to again? Disney World, Chicago, and this one super clear lake I swam in once a few hours away that I don't recall the name of. Have you ever owned a succulent? No. While they're pretty, I've never been much of a plant person. Do you support small businesses? I REALLY want to start doing that more when I have the option to buy my own stuff/have my own income. As someone who wants to be a freelance photographer, I get it. Starting an independent business is hard as hell. If a brand were to sponsor you, which brand(s) would you prefer? Uhhh I dunno. Have you read the entire Bible? No. Do you make bucket lists for each season? No. That does sound kinda fun, though. How old were you when you first dyed your hair? I have no idea. Do you dye your hair regularly? No. :/ I desperately want to, though. It's just not something we can afford to spare cash on. What is the most comfortable type of pants, in your opinion? Pajama pants? haha Do you think you could ever be famous? No. I'm way too boring and don't want to be anyway. What are some jobs you’ve had in the past? Sales associate, cashier, and deli worker. None lasted long whatsoever. What are some jobs you want to or would like to have? List five. FIVE? I don't know. I just know I want to be a photographer. Well, being an artist or poet would be very cool. And a reptile breeder, maybe tarantulas, too, but that makes me kinda nervous with JUST how many babies they have. What are some jobs you have considered? In rough order from youth to now: paleontologist, vet, movie director, game designer, author/poet, artist, music video editor, wildlife biologist, photographer... Maybe there's more that just aren't coming to me. Are you thankful for social media, or do you wish it didn’t exist? Depends on the day for me, but I'm generally thankful for it so I can keep up with the lives of people who are important to me. It's just that it's a breeding ground for self-doubt and rampant comparisons that can easily depress me when I see some people are "further ahead" and more "established" than me. What are some of the best medications you’ve ever had? The combined efforts of Latuda and Lamictal saved my life. What was a video you watched over and over as a kid? There were lots of movies, like The Lion King, a certain Barney one when I was very young, and I watched Finding Nemo like crazy. Do you know a lot of people who were loving, and then turned cold? Jason????????????????? Is that you??????????????????????????????????????????? Do you own anything plaid? Ha, what a coincidence, I'm wearing my red plaid pj pants. Are you good at remembering names? Definitely not. Have the cops ever gotten on to you for anything before? No. What email thingy do you use? (yahoo, gmail, rock) ... Rock? lol anyway my main is Hotmail, but I inevitably have a gmail to have a YouTube account. What game system(s) do you own? PS2, Wii, Nintendo DS Lite, and a GameBoy Advance. Are you any good at Guitar Hero? I used to be; I played most songs on Expert, then some really tough ones on Hard. I was soooooo addicted to those games. I remember when I got the first one for Christmas, I literally played it all day. Have you ever played Call of Duty? Nah, not my jam. What is your favorite/most visited website? YouTube. Is your bed comfortable? Sure. I've definitely had way worse. Do you have a garage? No. Fun fact, I've never lived in a house with one. Should you be doing anything right now? What? There's a number of things I could be doing that are definitely more productive, like finishing decorating my damn room. Do doctors or dentists make you more nervous? Not really. I only ever get nervous to hear my weight at the doctor's. Did you ever think you were about to die before? I don't quite know. When I ODed, it was more like I didn't care if I did. Have you ever really had a near death experience? Was it cool? "Was it cool." Literally fuck off. I guess you could technically consider my OD a "near death experience," especially given how many pills I took, yet I somehow experienced almost no ill symptoms. Maybe because we got to the ER for fluids quickly enough, idk. I'm just glad I didn't die. What is your favorite kind of weather? Snowy! Like a steady snowfall of large flakes with no breeze and total silence. *chef's kiss* Ever tasted beer? Ugh, no. Just the smell makes me sick. It was my dad's drink of choice when he was an alcoholic so I just have a very negative association with it. Have you ever seen a dead body? Yes, at an open-casket wake. Ever poured salt on a slug? As kids, my sisters and I would get our parents to do it because they grossed us out. So, so cruel. I still have this weird but pretty extreme phobia of them, but I wouldn't torture the things like that.

Oh, the Concho watersnake (Nerodia paucimaculata)? An imperiled snake species endemic only to a small distribution range in streams and riparian habitats near the confluence of the Concho and Colorado rivers in the savanna and prairies of the Rolling Plains ecoregion of West Texas between San Angelo and Killeen? The snake that famously angers oil and gas corporation executives of West Texas?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Concho watersnake was formally listed as a threatened species in 1986, apparently in large part due to devastation of its riparian habitat; the snake was removed from the list of threatened species in 2011 (to the celebration of land developers).
On how artificial dam infrastructure degraded the snake’s habitat:
“Historically, the Concho Water Snake occurred over about 276 river miles of the Colorado and Concho Rivers in central Texas. [...] The Concho Water Snake is endemic to Texas, which means it lives nowhere else in the world. It has one of the smallest distributions of any North American snake. [...] The Concho Water Snake may once have been more widely distributed, but the E.V. Spence Reservoir upstream and Lake Buchanan downstream have inundated many miles of river habitat at both ends of the current range. [...] Larger trees and shrubs, such as pecan, cedar elm, and willow, with limbs that hang over water, provide basking sites for juveniles and adults. Common bank and shoreline vegetation used for cover and basking sites include switchgrass, devil-weed aster, greenbrier, poison ivy, willow, saltcedar, button bush, hackberry, pecan, cedar elm, and mesquite.” [Source: Texas Parks & Wildlife Department.]

Ulmus crassifloia, the cedar elm, an important species in the watersnake’s habitat:

Excerpt from: “Rally puts spotlight on impact of listing lizard as endangered species.” Mella McEwen for Midland-Reporter Telegram. 26 April 2011.
[The president of the Permian Basin Petroleum Association] called the issue [of potentially halting some fracking to save endangered reptile habitat] “one of the most important issues facing the oil and gas industry and West Texas.” [...] The stakes are also high for the nation, he said, because the listing would eliminate oil and gas operations in the nation’s most prolific oil and gas producing region. [...] J*mes B*auch*mp, president of the Motran Alliance, worked for Rep. Ch*rlie St*nholm when the Concho water snake was listed, an event that almost ended efforts to construct Lake Ivie. “Had it not been for construction of Lake Ivie in 1995, we [humans? resource extraction lobbyists?] might be the endangered species.”

Five population units of the species [“Population Dynamics of the Concho Water Snake in Rivers and Reservoirs.” Martin J. Whitting, et al. 2008.]:

From Texas State Historical Society: “The O. H. Ivie Reservoir, once called Stacy Reservoir, is impounded by the S. W. Freese Dam at the Concho-Coleman county line. It is located in Concho, Coleman, and Runnels counties. In 1938 the United States Army Corps of Engineers expressed a desire for a reservoir site near the confluence of the Concho and Colorado rivers. An agreement was finally reached in 1985, when the Texas Water Commission granted permission to impound 554,000 acre-feet of water on the Colorado River at Stacy, sixteen miles below the confluence. The project was delayed by negotiations to preserve the endangered Concho water snakes [...].“

More fun ecology, from Texas Parks & Wildlife Department:
Historically, the Concho Water Snake occurred over about 276 river miles of the Colorado and Concho Rivers in central Texas. The snake was first [described by Euro-American taxonomists] from the South Concho River and Dove Creek, which are tributaries to the Concho River west of San Angelo, Texas. When the subspecies was described in 1961, these records and one other on the Colorado River south of Robert Lee in Coke County were the only known localities for this snake.[...] The probable historic range of this snake is estimated to include, at a minimum, the Colorado River from Spence Reservoir down-stream to the vicinity of Lake Buchanan, Elm, Bluff, and Coyote Creeks (Runnels County), and the entire Concho River (Tom Green and Concho Counties) and its headwater tributaries. [...]
Large snakes consume mosquitofish, channel catfish, flat-head catfish, gizzard shad, and several species of sunfish. The bullhead minnow, sheepshead minnow, and bigscale logperch were found to be the dominant prey of snakes in Ballinger Municipal Lake. [End excerpt.]

Always Called It / Danny Torrance Imagine
Tumblr media
Request: Hello Love I hope you’re doing well! I wanted to ask if you’d be willing to make a Danny Torrance imagine where him and y/n where friends when they were little because they both have the shining but one of them moved away but reunite because of Abra and they end up getting married in the end (a happy ending please). Thank you love! 💚💚
This is honestly what I need right now ;’3 <3 Also I’ve received SO many requests for more Danny Torrance wowey
Comments are always appreciated!
The bench was once a sea boat, one that had ridden so many waves with buoyant ease, feeling the sun and letting the wind pass by with its tuneful song.
Now the colours of every year she was painted show through in rainbow flakes, rendering her all the more beautiful, safely in her earthen harbour. The bench had been exposed to the elements for many seasons, likely it was older than Danny could even count to yet on his fingers, but still he ran them over the swirls in the wood grain as he talked to DIck, his breathe tasting like brine as the old man turned on his heel and left him there alone again. He sat, not without impatience, but feeling as if his legs had been glued to the seat. He knew if he tried to move, his feet would give out, and Wendy was too far away to shout for help.
Besides, he could feel you in his mind, poking about, and it comforted him plenty to know you were there with him.
‘Who was that?’
He felt the wind tousle his hair, cool, refreshing and let his eyes fall on the ocean, the horizon, far away. He wondered how many had sat in this very spot and what their emotions were, perhaps some were boys with their dads on their way back from school, some the old folk come to remember a loved one who's passed. He was neither of these things, and yet somehow both at the same time.
He wondered if anyone else had felt as scared as him whilst they sat here.
‘My friend Dick. He’s trying to help me get rid of the monsters. And control the shine now that Tony’s gone.’
‘I thought I was helping you?’
Today was damp and bleak, and a light grey mist hung over the lake like a veil, clouding his view of the sun.
‘You do. You are. You’re my best friend, you know that... where are you?’
Whipping your head around to make sure your mum was busy tending to your sibling, you step a little closer up the brown crunchy grass of the slight hill by the lapping water to splay your hand against the trunk of an old tree. You watch Danny for a moment, the brown haired boy slumped against the seat, his skin so pale at first you think he’s ill before you see him slowly raise his thumb up to his mouth.
‘I miss you. I wish you were here.’
An unfamiliar, and unsettling feeling churns in the pit of your stomach as you watch his eyes dull, an unknowing blush spreading a hot red against the the brows of your cheeks as you finally dare to step out and speak.
‘Danny, I have to tell you something. We’re moving.’
~
The bench was an old brass colour that reminded Danny of a fire extinguisher. Strange, he knew, but there was something menacing about the twirling swirls of metal that wound like spikes around the top as he lets his fingers fall to the surface, feeling the heat of the day that had soaked into the metal. Only here such a thing could remain, here in the walled garden. The bench was typical of the parks, the rosy cedar browns married to the iron that curved into the great arms and grew into ever-blooming flowers to rest on.
The park covered a wide area that could fit about three small houses. It was hilly with a tall tree or two near one hill. There were benches for people to sit in every corner and jogging tracks were all around the edges of the park. The west corner had some swings too on which many children used to come and play. Flower hedges and bushes grew all around; this made the park look more pleasant and attractive. This place would have been most beautiful at this time; it would have been so pleasurable to relax here and take in some cool fresh air but only if bad things were not happening. If only his heart wasn’t hammering so harsh in his chest that he felt the sick rise up his throat in hot lumps of acid.
‘Hello, Danny.’
He feels his breathe leave his body as he turns slowly around, every nerve and every fibre of his being trembling as he spots the lady standing next to Abra.
‘Hey Uncle Dan, I told you I’d find her! Lucky she’s my teacher, huh? It would have been harder to find her if she lived miles and miles and miles away-’
Finally braving a small cough, before placing his hand against his chest with what he could only hope was a perfectly reasonable pass for a smile, Danny allows himself to fall back onto the bench as you leave Abra’s side and sit down next to him.
‘Hi-’
‘What happened to your hair?’
You laugh lightly, and Danny feels the tips of his ears burning red as you hit him gently on the shoulder. ‘It’s a good look, I’m not sure the bowl cut is super in fashion right now.’
‘Jeez, I’ve missed you Y/n.’
‘Yeah, I missed you too. I tried to find you, I swear, but it was just so difficult over such a long distance-’
‘It’s fine, it’s fine, really. I always knew this day would come.’
He pauses for a moment, his fingers lightly gliding across the cold metal, its material coarse against his skin, but as his fingers splayed closer to yours, he couldn’t care less. He held in his breathe, not daring to move or even look at you as his pinkie bumped against yours, before his trembling fingers finally find the courage to slowly slide over yours, enveloping them completely.
‘Or at least, I hoped it would.’
The night passes so quickly, Danny can hardly recall the time difference between Abra leaving the two of them with a big smirk on her face just a little past when she was meant to be home at dinner, and when the darkness blanketed them in a mist so cold Danny finally offered to walk you back home.
He had always enjoyed the nights here, the pure inky black a comfort, a blanket of generous velvet that kept him safe and illuminated the world in a light he could understand and draw upon. It is the pure black that makes the moon so beautiful, that makes a stage for her to stand upon, and gives the stars a beauty that makes the soul serene, and lights a spark in the imagination. That night was no different, but there was the added bonus that he felt after years of gazing out of his bedroom window wishing that he was out there with you, you were finally here with him.
Kicking at the gravel softly, a dopey smile on your face, you allow the short tufts of your hair to fall over your forehead, embracing the cooling breeze, but not allowing yourself to meet Danny’s gaze in case he figured out how reminiscent they had become.
Beaming like the sun, Danny gazed fondly at you, before asking ‘well, what shall we do now? The night is still young, and I don’t have to be at work for another few hours.’
‘And hopefully the day will be too’, you add, looking up at him quickly with a stiffness in your frame, an electricity surrounding you that nearly takes Dan’s breath away. Your hoarse voice continues, as you begin to bite your bottom lip, ‘and the day after that, hopefully too.’
~
You look at yourself in the mirror one last time, imagining the young girl who used to wave at the young boy she’d heard in her kindergarten class was the strange child with the dead father, the boy who’s mind used to shout at hers whenever he passed her by in the corridor. Your young mind not yet afraid of consequences or danger or in-laws, built up the courage to climb the tree outside his house and reach out to tap on his window before nearly falling out of it when his Wendy ran out the front door and caught you in the act, inviting you in for milk and cookies and asking you, next time, to just ring the doorbell. That was the day Danny had realised he felt a strange, scary but right feeling, almost as if the part of him that had been lacking or missing or longing for something in this strange town. After the Overlook, after all the monsters, he truly believed you were there to save him.
And after Abra brought you back to him, he made it his job to never lose you again, even if it meant settling down in New Hampshire (which Billy was thrilled about).
Taking Abra’s hand, you step into the Church, seeing the face of your fiance turn from anxiously sweeping the guests into a gaze of adoration and complete devotion once he had spotted you, you knew that whatever the future held for the two of you, as long as you were together, he would be alright.
And for the first time in his life, Danny Torrance wasn’t afraid of the future. In fact, he looked forward to it.
