Today was just me, my chemo fatigue, and 450 acres of urban eco sanctuary 💖💕🩷💖💗💘💕
(And about 62729293637282 native birds. I couldn't do the harder tracks, but even the gentler ones were still wildly Jurassic Park esque. Suuuuper cool to see so many once near extinct native species thriving again)

Everyone who misses dinosaurs I have a creacher for you :)
Tumblr media
This is a tuatara!!! They’re little tiny guys native to Aotearoa (New Zealand) and they may look like lizards but they’re actually from the Triassic era!!!
Tumblr media
They even have three eyes!!! Scientists believe it’s for absorbing vitamin D and determining day/ night cycles but it’s only really visible on babies :)
Basically little silly guys who are super easy to spot on hot days at Zealandia (wildlife sanctuary) because they love a little sunbathe :D

Getting my bearings
07-02-2023
Okay please do not expect me to keep up this rate of posting on here because I do not intend to but I just have SO MUCH NEW STUFF TO SHARE RIGHT NOW
It feels like I've been here for two whole weeks already, with how much I've been up to. I've seen the local shopping district (blown away by the caliber of the thrift shops here, I am living for it), gotten in a (minor, no worries) car accident, gone to that board game night (played Viticulture, cool but not entirely my thing) and most of the administrative process has been taken care of by now, which means:
a local phone number: much needed to get around if you want future employers to be able to reach you. I have a dual SIM phone but I've taken my Dutch SIM out anyway, because the rates are staggeringly high: 254 cents per minute of outgoing or incoming calls, 51 cents per text message and 500 cents per MB(!) of data. No thank you. I do still want to keep my Dutch number so I've just downgraded my plan to the bare minimum to save some costs.
a local bank account: it took some back-and-forth, but now I'm officially banking with Kiwibank :) I chose them for their omnipresence, and because I'd read online that they're one of the more sustainable and inclusive options out here.
a local tax ID: is on the way, this is necessary for NZ and NL to communicate about my income and any taxes that apply.
an actual job: working on it, printing CVs tomorrow but I also managed to get my hands on a beautiful guitar so busking is now officially on the table!
The time I wasn't working on these things, I spent out and about, enjoying the views and the culture shock. Yesterday's highlight was Zealandia: a 255 ha wildlife sanctuary that sits right on the fold line where two tectonic plates meet. It's home to many a species of birds, reptiles and plants, some of them endangered, and offers some killer views:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's a little selection of who I met there:
The Pied Shag / Kāruhiruhi / Phalacrocorax varius varius
Tumblr media
Not to be confused with a regular ol' penguin. Seemed very chill
The Takahē / Porphyrio hochstetteri
Tumblr media
Very sleepy, and the most reminiscent of its undoubtedly dinosaur ancestors. Also clearly a menace to keep inside its designated area:
Tumblr media
The California quail / Tikaokao / Callipepla californica
Tumblr media
Standing guard on the fence as its whānau rummage about in the garden below 💚
Tuatara / Sphenodon punctatus
Tumblr media
The Kākā / Nestor meridionalis septentrionalis
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
According to the volunteer park guide who was kind enough to give us a talk about them on her time off, the park started out with 14 of these back in 2002. At the time the Kākā hadn't been living in the Wellington area for over 100 years. Since then, over 1000 new Kākā chicks have been born in the sanctuary due to their tremendous efforts to protect these intelligent birds. The feeders they put out for them require them to step on a little pedal to lift the lid and access the food. They've done experiments with them where they put a little wooden block under the pedal to block it, and the young ones quickly learned to remove it to regain access. They've also suspended food from pieces of string hanging from the branches to see what they would do, since Kākā are unable to hover. Even this they managed to solve by sitting on the branch and pulling up the string until they could reach the food. They look like they're having great fun, hanging upside down from branches and being real acrobats in the trees as well as the air 😍
I'm definitely visiting this place again when I have the chance, because there's a lot more of the park to explore!
My current plan is to stay here in Te Whanganui-a-tara until the beginning of April. Then I can catch a ride up to Hobbiton and then Tāmaki-makau-rau (aka Auckland), after which I'll travel back down, in order to visit the South Island in May, most likely! So for now my focus will be on saving up some money and enjoying the wonderful weather while it lasts 🌞

Zealandia Birdlife 18 by ArdieBeaPhotography Via Flickr: Zealandia Wildlife Sanctuary is a valley in the city, carefully fenced against predators (domestic cats and marauding rats, mostly) that has enabled a number of bird species to return to the city. The park was open free of charge for a short while, and I got in on the final day. It was raining constantly, so this is a long way from the most vibrant photography I could do, but I'm happy with these few pics.

Zealandia
Formerly the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary, since 2009 the much cooler sounding Zealandia, is a 225 hectare predator free reserve only 3km from Wellington CBD. Formerly a water catchment area with two dams, it became a reserve in 1995 and home to the first predator proof fence in the world for creating an urban sanctuary. In 2019 Time Magazine named it one of the hundred places in the world to visit…

Thankful 4 Welly
In an attempt to celebrate Thanksgiving, be it a week late, the Americans met up in Wellington. Wednesday night was the Wellington’s office holiday party which Greg and I just caught the end of.
On Thursday, Greg, Evan, and I joined Porter to work out of the office. It was not my most productive day. Around 11 we joined in on a trivia session, and then we played with the office’s tough rugby team. For lunch I met up with Mary, who used to work in the SF office with me. We ate on the waterfront and traded stories about what it was like being ex-pats in NZ during this wild year.
Tumblr media
I had to work late since I did nothing in the morning. When I finished up, I walked back along the boardwalk and met up with the rest of the group for sushi in Te Aro. Afterwards, we went to Heyday where we got flights of gin and beer. The vibes of the brewery reminded me of the US. I felt like we could’ve been in Denver as we sat at picnic tables listening to classics, the space illuminated by string lights. We ended the night with a few rounds of spicy uno back at Porter’s.
Tumblr media
We all took Friday off to explore Wellington and be together. The first place we went was Zealandia which is a huge wildlife sanctuary in the center of Wellington. We spent several hours there walking through the trees and birdwatching. The main finds of the day were the tuis, kākās, shags, quail, and ducklings. We also got to see tuatara which are reptiles that are endemic to NZ and descendants of dinosaurs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Porter peeled off to go help Anna with dinner while the rest of us continued on to the botanical gardens. We spotted a dope playground and rushed to try it out. Evan was being grumpy and made fun of us for wanting to play until he saw how much fun we were having. Reluctantly, he joined us and partook in the activities. We continued through and ended up in the rose garden. From there, we walked back towards town.
Tumblr media
We stopped in Midnight Espresso for a little snack and coffee to reenergise us for the night ahead. I was really into the vibe of this café. They had quality fresh juices, a wide variety of vegetarian snacks, and good coffee. It was just what I needed.
After that we freshened up and met at Porter’s for a big Thanksgiving dinner. Anna cooked up a comforting spread of Mac n’ Cheese, stuffing, twice baked potatoes, garlic bread, duck, and more. You could tell that the food was good because several of us were forced to take cat naps after dinner. To end the night and work off some of the calories, Greg, Porter, and I hiked up Mount Vic to see the stars and look out at the city.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next morning we met at Porter’s to have a leftovers brunch before walking to Oriental Bay to enjoy the beach. We sat down on benches facing the water and were immediately pelted with sand being swept off the beach from big gusts of wind. Finally, we were experiencing the classic Welly weather.
We hid for cover in Te Papa, NZ’s national museum, where we learned more about kiwi birds and saw giant lifelike sculptures of soldiers. We grabbed a cup of coffee at the café before beginning our beer crawl. Mary met up with us at the second of four bars. We enjoyed trying a variety of local brews and vibed with the hip Welly scene. Evan even bought a shirt to rep his fav brewery, Garage Project.
Tumblr media
The next day we met up at the farmer’s market, where we admired all the fresh fruits and veggies for sale. There was also a block of diverse food trucks to get lunch from. We did several laps through before choosing the best options. I ended up getting a juice and splitting a bao bun, potato swirl, and fried noods with Al. It was a swell way to end our time in Welly.

We had a nice coffee then headed for Te Papa, the national museum of New Zealand. It's a remarkable place although we only saw a fraction of it. Light and airy with lots of loos(!) and a nice café where we had lunch. We saw an exhibition featuring the wildlife of NZ, a fascinating earthquake feature which included going inside a wooden house and getting to feel what a quake would feel like (terrifying) and a most moving and beautifully done exhibition about Gallipoli which was produced by Peter Jackson. Nick and I then went to Zealandia which is a wonderful bird sanctuary surrounded by a totally mammal proof fence. The noise was deafening - cicadas mainly- and we didn’t see many unusual birds but it was a pretty walk. This was a tuatara

Upcoming travel!
Eek! I’m super excited! Tomorrow night, Wife and I are flying to New Zealand! We’re going for a conference where I will be giving a presentation, but then we will stay an extra 10 days to go sightseeing!
We won’t arrive in Wellington till Sunday afternoon, because of crossing the date line. We have plans with my coworkers to do an evening tour of Zealandia/Karori Eco-Sanctuary, which sounds like an extraordinary place. We hope to see the little spotted kiwi, which is nocturnal. However, I am trying not to get my hopes up in case we aren’t that lucky, though they do seem to think the chances are good. The conference starts Monday night, and my talk is on Tuesday.
The day after my conference ends, we’ll take the ferry to the South Island for the rest of our stay. I have strong hopes of seeing penguins, dolphins, albatrosses, and other exciting wildlife!
I’ve done a lot of planning for this trip, but haven’t started packing yet--but I have all of tomorrow afternoon to pack. I’m concerned that I might not have enough socks...
I don’t think we’ll have time for much socialising in Wellington due to the conference, but if you’re there and want to meet me, drop me a note and we can try to make it happen!

The BBC report stated these had been translocated to Zealandia in 2005, and since then they’ve been breeding efficiently.

Researchers say the introduction of land mammals to New Zealand in current centuries has severely altered its ecosystem. Native natural world are seen to have suffered from this. Zealandia seeks to deal with this, letting indigenous natural world flourish with out the specter of predators, because of the 8.6 km a pest-exclusion fence.
The area is residence to about 40 native chook species, endangered reptiles and invertebrates, stated the BBC report. Additionally dotting the panorama are a whole bunch of native crops, bushes and timber.
Win-win for the town
Wellington is gaining immensely from the ecological island. It’s a large vacationer pull. Additionally, there’s the nice spillover impact — unique birds and bugs are sometimes now noticed within the metropolis, too. Plus, there’s the massive reservoir of oxygen instantly at hand — just like New York’s Central Park, however with birds and different creatures, too. Environmentalists say Zealandia additionally helps hold extreme warmth and floods in test.
The house additional gives a ‘residing laboratory’, stated the BBC report. It permits scientists to conduct conservation analysis, pilot restoration methods and let the general public have a peep into the goings-on.
Whereas these are the short-term achievements, the long-term one pans 500 years, stated the BBC report. The plan is to revive the forest and freshwater ecosystems to their prehuman state, to the extent doable — it can take about 500 years for the unique cover to regrow.
