Because the fact that he's the saviour, the Boy Who Lived, the stupid Scar-Head who was somehow grown taller and broader, doesn't mean that he can just be that rude and not ask for permission first

Under the mistletoe
"And you're sure it'll only stop the two of them?" Draco asked, his eyes narrowed and skeptical of the curly haired Gryffindor.
"Yes, Malfoy, I'm sure." Hermione replied, annoyed at the Slytherin boys skeptics.
(✿◕‿◕✿)
Theodore Nott and Y/N L/N were completely oblivious and deep in denial. The amount of times the two gushed to their respective friends about something the other did was far too many.
It was obvious that they liked each other. Everyone knew, but them it seemed, and it was unbearable. Especially for their friends who couldn't take the constant talks about how much one liked the other but 'It would never happen because he's way out of my league.' or 'She deserves better than me.'
So Harry did the unspeakable, he went and talked to Draco. The two groups came up with a plan.
It was the holidays, Theo and Y/n were already practically a couple, doing things together that no normal friends would, all they weren't doing was kissing or shagging.
The two groups knew there was no way of really forcing them to confess, but if they could get the two to kiss then they'd have to confront the obvious attraction they felt for the other, and surely they wouldn't be able to deny the face that the other liked them.
It was nearly fool proof. The just had to find a way to execute it.
"Mistletoe!" Blaise shouted, grinning as he ran into the room of requirement, the official meeting place for operation Kiss, as Blaise suggested, though no one else wanted to call it that there was no other options.
"What're you on about." Ron said, frowning.
"Mistletoe!" Blaise repeated, still grinning like a madman as he held up the tiny bundle of mistletoe, showing it to everyone in the room.
"Yeah, we get it, mistletoe." Mattheo mocked, "What about it?"
"This," He waved the thing around in his friends face, "Is how we get them to kiss!"
"Mate..." Harry said slowly, "Hate to break it to you, but they've gone under mistletoe before, the completely ignore it. Like literally everyone else does."
"Yeah, I know that." Blaise says, annoyed by the lack of enthusiasm in the room, "But what if we found a way that forced them to not ignore it!" He waited for someone to interrupt him, to say it was a dumb idea, but when no one didn't he went on, "Hear me out, what if when they both walked under it it somehow kept them there! So that they wouldn't be able to leave that spot until they kissed!"
Everyone stared at him, confused but intrigued.
"And how would we do that?"
Blaise rolled his eyes, "Well I don't know." He sassed, "I came up with the idea, you all can figure out how to do it." He huffed as he dropped himself onto one of the many sofas in the room.
As if they were all thinking the same thing they all turned towards Hermione, who looked startled by the attention, "I don't know why you're all looking at me." She frowned.
"Well you're the smartest one here..." Enzo said and the girl pressed her lips into a thin line before she rolled her eyes.
"Well, there probably is a way it's possible, we'd have to modify a potion or maybe even a spell, especially since we don't want to trap others under the mistletoe, so we'd have to find a way to keep it person specific..." Hermione then rattled on about all the ways they could go about it and soon they had a plan.
It took a week for things to be ready.

"Have your friends been acting weird lately?" Y/N asked Theo as they walked out of potions.
"More than usual actually." The boy replied and glanced down at the girl he was sure he wanted to marry.
"Same, and I swear I've seen Hermione talking with Draco so much this week."
"Maybe they're finally getting together." Theo smirked, "Salazar knows it's about time."
The girl laughed and shook her head, "Tell me about it. If they don't get together this year then I'm going to be out of ten galleons."
The pair went quiet for a moment and Y/N took the chance to look up at her best friend. He was beautiful, and quite possibly the love of her life. She had never planned on letting her feelings get this far.
It had only started as a small crush on a boy she was friendly with back in second year. But then they got closer, and the closer they got the harder she fell.
Now they're in their last year and she still hadn't confessed, she figured it was too late, and it was clear he didn't want anything other than friendship from her. He had had multiple girlfriends before, and none of them looked like her, they were quite the opposite actually.
Y/N was counting on losing feelings for him this year, it would be for the best.
As if he could feel her eyes on him Theo turned and looked at her, his green-blue eyes meeting hers. For a moment she felt her heart stop, she was lost in them and the swirling colors.
But then she shook her head and looked forward and started to rant about whatever came to mind. It was a good thing she always had at least one thing to rant about. Or she should say two, but it would be idiotic to rant to Theo about himself. It would also make her feelings for him obvious.
The two turned into a deserted hall and as they passed beneath an arch way they found that neither of them could take a step forward.
Their feet were stuck to the ground.
Y/N turned to Theo frantically, "What's going on?!"
"I dunno, I can't lift my feet off the ground."
"Neither can I..." She went silent and found that she could pivot. She looked around, and it wasn't until she looked up that she saw mistletoe hung from the high archway. But surely that had nothing to do with it, so she ignored it.
"Did the twins do this?" Theo started to ask but then remembered that the infamous pranksters had graduated. But that was all either of them could come up with, it was something the twins would do.
So maybe it was a Weasly.
The pair ended up staring at each other, the both of them ignoring the close proximity and the fact that their chests were touching.
After ten minutes Y/N had come up with an idea. It was a stupid one and she wasn't sure if it would even work. But Theo wouldn't stop staring at her and she was sure she looked like a tomato under the heat of his gaze.
"Theo." She said.
"Y/N."
The girl took a deep breath before blurting the words, "Kiss me."
"W-what?" Theo stuttered, his heart beating ten times faster now and a light blush coating his cheeks. His eyes flicked down to the lips he dreamt about kissing, the plump lips he fantasized about at night. He swallowed thickly and met her eyes once more. "I- Why?"
"I'm just-" She paused, "Testing out a theory." She wanted to kiss him, but she didn't at the same time. She didn't want to kiss him under these circumstances, if she was going to kiss him she wanted him to know it was because she liked him.
"Okay..." Theo said slowly and Y/N looked up at him with determination in her eyes.
She took a deep breath and brought her hands up to the boys face, instinctually his hands found her waist, "I really really like Theodore Nott!" She blurted quickly before smashing her lips onto his.
Theo stood still for a moment before he realized she was kissing him, and he wasn't kissing her back. So he did.
The kiss was sloppy, and rushed, and there was passion and hunger in it. Both of them seemed t have forgotten what was happening, losing themselves in the kiss of their lives.
It was only when she tugged on the hairs at the back of Theos head and he let out a groan did Y/N realize what she was doing.
Horrified she pushed him off, and when he stumbled back a step she saw that her theory was right and she bolted off. Running far far away from the boy and her feelings.
Meanwhile Theo stood there, dazed and confused and impossible flustered, and all he could think about was that he had just kissed her. And he knew he was going to marry her.
"She likes me too." He mumbled, smiling to himself as his fingers brushed across his lips.
No clue how to go on from this. Might make part two ;3

I read many fics where the marauders where the main characters: either Harry and Co traveled back in time or it was from James', Sirius', Remus' or Lily's perspective and in most of them Sirius is either unemployed and just focusing on the war efforts or he's training with James to be an auror. But I also read few focs where Sirius decided to become a healer, both because he wanted to help Remus with his illness and because he wanted to make up for what he did to his friend.
What do you think he did during the war? Which one of the options sounds the most like Sirius?
Hmm, make up for what? I’m not sure I know what you mean by that.
Canonically, I think that Sirius was living off his uncle’s gold and doing stuff full time for the Order. I think he was really wrapped up in the war, frankly.
If Sirius were to have a job at this time, I think it would have been a Muggle one. Working in an auto shop, a pub, something with animals, etc—or potentially something where he could work sporadically, maybe, and no one would consider it weird. Maybe working in a Muggle factory job, idk.
As a person in his early 30s, however, I think he could have done a number of things. Magizoologist, Cursebreaker, Unspeakable—if there was nothing keeping him in the UK, he probably would have traveled for work, imo. I also think he could have been an Auror but I believe he would have hated it and left eventually. I could see him as a Healer, but I really see him as a pediatrician if that were the case.
Alternatively, I could also see him falling unwillingly into fame. Like maybe he becomes a wizarding musician and accidentally gets really popular and he HATES it. But he likes making music and then just tries to hide as much as possible and once in a while releases a single that makes everyone lose their minds and then simply disappears for a few years.

"Prince Harry and the Value of Silence"
During the early stages of my father’s Alzheimer’s, when he still had lucid moments, I apologized to him for writing an autobiography many years earlier in which I flung open the gates of our troubled family life. He was already talking less at that point, but his eyes told me he understood. ...
My justification in writing a book I now wish I hadn’t written (and please, don’t go buy it; I’ve written many other books since) was very similar to what I understand to be Harry’s reasoning. I wanted to tell the truth, I wanted to set the record straight. Naïvely, I thought if I put my own feelings and my own truth out there for the world to read, my family might also come to understand me better.
Of course, people generally don’t respond well to being embarrassed and exposed in public. And in the ensuing years, I’ve learned something about truth: It’s way more complicated than it seems when we’re young. There isn’t just one truth, our truth — the other people who inhabit our story have their truths as well.
Prince William has, I’m sure, his own take on the physical fight that Harry has described. To really understand the dynamic between the brothers, to broaden the story and make it more complete, William’s truth has to be considered as well. Harry has written that, after William hit him, William told Harry to hit him back, which he declined to do. But by writing about the fight, he’s done exactly that.
Harry has also expressed a wish that his relationship with William, and with his father, heals. Maybe that will happen, but they’ll have to walk a long distance across a battlefield that he has now expanded.
Years ago, someone asked me what I would say to my younger self if I could. Without hesitating I answered: “That’s easy. I’d have said, ‘Be quiet.’” Not forever. But until I could stand back and look at things through a wider lens. Until I understood that words have consequences, and they last a really long time.
Harry has called William not only his “beloved brother” but his “arch nemesis.” He chose words that cut deep, that leave a scar; perhaps if he had taken time to be quiet, to reflect on the enduring power of his words, he’d have chosen differently.
Silence gives you room, it gives you distance, and it lets you look at your experiences more completely, without the temptation to even the score. Sometime in the years ahead, Harry may look back as I did and wish he could unspeak what he has said.
I’ve learned something else about truth: Not every truth has to be told to the entire world. People are always going to be curious about famous families, and often the stories from those families can resonate with others, give them insight into their own situations, even transcend time since fame flutters at the edges of eternity.
But not everything needs to be shared, a truth that silence can teach. Harry seems to have operated on the dictum that ‘Silence is not an option.’ I would, respectfully, suggest to him that it is.

Thoughts of Greogorovitch swam in his head as Harry stared at the ceiling in an effort to fall asleep. He always hated this stage. Being asleep was peaceful, being awake was necessary. Shuffling uncomfortably in his bed, not quite awake, not quite asleep was irritating and time consuming.
How long would Gregorovitch be able to outrun his inevitable fate? Was it inevitable? Was his own fate, whether to kill or be killed, inevitable?
Harry thought back dazedly to Hogwarts. He thought longingly of what now seemed so low stakes and easy adventures over the years. Even the drudgery of classes felt now like an unachievable beacon.
September the first. Tomorrow, the castle would be bustling again. Would McGonagall give the same lecture they’d had on NEWTs and OWLs? Would Snape still be slithering around in the shadows now that he was Headmaster? Would Flitwick fall off his pile of books? Would someone get a Howler? Would Slughorn give the same demonstration of Potions they’d gotten last year? Would someone fall off in flying lessons?
Or would all of that be overshadowed by the grimness of the climate, by the Death Eaters ruling their beloved school?
Harry thought again of the Polyjuice Potion Hermione had nicked. Slughorn would probably have been able to tell how it was different from the one he’d made. Even Ginny might, come to think of it. She hadn’t been half-bad at Potions.
His thoughts strayed to the Felix Felicis. . . How useful it would be now. And even the Amortentia. Maybe not as important, but the smell of it had been so amazing. . . So relaxing. He’d give nearly anything to get a whiff of that smell now, a day before he would be infiltrating the headquarters of the manhunt for him.
Treacle tart, the smell of a broomstick in the grass right before a match, and that flowery smell he. . . . associated with. . . . The Burrow. . . . .
Harry sat up, sleep forgotten.
Ginny. He’d smelled the combination of her shampoo and hair spray a thousand times – first at the Burrow, and then at Hogwarts, stealing away to corners to do unspeakable things.
How had he. . . What. . . .
Even at the beginning of sixth year?
Harry closed his eyes and fisted his fingers through his unruly hair.
The imaginary scent assaulted his senses – it was all he could smell, feel, think about. Ginny. He’d fancied her even before he knew it, even before the beginning of the school year.
He thought of Ginny, of what she could be doing now. Of what she had done today. Had she wrinkled her nose in that delicate way she always did? How had she done her hair? Had she worn her Gryffindor patches on her robes? Had she laughed carefreely, throwing her head back and swishing her hair? Had she liked the Welcoming Feast? Had she smiled that smug smirk, the one that always drove him crazy? Had she gotten her schedule? Had she liked that? Had her dormmates made any new drama?
Had she thought about him at all?
Ginny. Ginny. Ginny.
He felt hollow, like someone had just scooped up most of his insides. As alone as the time when he noticed Ron and Hermione’s fingers inches from one another.
He curled into himself, gasping. If he were someone else, he might cry now. Since he was Harry Potter, who had long since had the habit of crying driven out of him, he merely self-soothed, not able to express the sheer misery he felt.
He didn’t know how long he’d liked Ginny. He didn’t know if she hated him now. He didn’t know what to do about his visions. He didn’t know how to help Ron and Hermione. He didn’t know if he would survive the next day. He didn’t know how to cope with all these jumbled feelings inside him, about Ginny and Ron and Hermione and all those people he’d loved and lost. He didn’t know if his fate was going to catch up to him, the way he was certain Gregorovitch’s would.
What he did know was that he missed Ginny so fiercely, so overwhelmingly, so desperately that it was an almost physical pain.

THE BIG FIND 2023: Day 2
The Big Find is a 10-day long Drarry fic-finding marathon to celebrate the blog’s anniversary. Below is the Day 2 compilation of lost fics, both old and new, that we’ve been unable to find. Our aim is to get as much attention to these lost fics as possible, to help people finally find their missing fics! Anyone can participate by reblogging, reading through each list, providing additional fic details, and informing us the title, author, or link of a fic, and their respective number in the comment section. 2.1 I’m not confident if it was in portuguese or english. Harry was an auror and Draco was an unspeakable and they were together on a mission were eventually they were captured into a sex traffic scheme. It was HEAVILY angsty and I think they were rescued by Rabastan Lestrange (i’m pretty sure it was him, but I think that it may be Rodolphus instead). It’s been YEARS since Iast read it but it made an impression.
2.2 Fairly sure that the fic was on ao3 and a wip but could be completely off the mark. The only thing I remember is that at Gringotts: the Potters’ will is read and specifically both Lucius Malfoy and Snape’s presence is requested; which is questioned by others present at the time of the reading. The Potters are aware that there is a connection between Harry and Draco - I’m guessing soulmate, mate if creature fic hence the request of Lucius. Possibly anti-Dumbledore but again not positive.

2.3 veela!Draco fic. Harry is draco’s mate and is extremely unhappy about it. Draco keeps his distance and nearly die because of it (veelas, in this universe, die if they are rejected), and Harry makes a unbreakable vow (i think that it is with narcisa) that he will at least try to be around. They eventually develop a relationship and Harry starts to search a new house for them, but Draco thinks that he is been cheated and die because of the perceived rejection. Harry eventually dies because of the vow he made and they meet again in a kind of heaven, where they also meet Lily, James, Sirius, Severus, Remus and other canon dead characters.
2.4 could have been on Ao3 or Hexfiles. It’s Draco’s birthday. Harry’s pov. Draco is in love with him. They have been friends for some years (and secretly in love, even though it’s only revealed in the end that Harry fell in love too). Draco always dances with everybody at his birthday except Harry. Tonight they dance. At some point Blaise says to Harry something like he should let Draco go so he could be with someone. There are plenty of people interested in Draco. Harry is surprised someone has noticed something is going on between them. Harry is married to Ginny and has kids with her. He can’t leave her. His thing with Draco started many years ago at his birthday party, when they talked about the war in a rose garden. They suddenly kissed. My memory might be failing me here, but I think they started eating lunch together maybe every week. They became friends, but also coudn’t help falling in love. At the time of one Draco’s birthday party (in the past) Ginny was giving birth or just birthed her and Harry’s twins. Harry was at the party without her. The need between him and Draco got too strong and Harry gave him a blowjob in the bathroom. That was the only sexual encounter between them. In the end Harry maybe dashes out of the party and Draco follow and confronts him. Harry admits he didn’t fall in love alone. I’m not sure if it was a wip or oneshot. It was all angst and hurt with strong chemistry and longing.
2.5 Ron is toasting the happy couple, maybe at their engagement party or wedding. He’s giving affectionate anecdotes about Draco’s bad behavior at school. Like, “remember the time he challenged Harry to a duel in the forbidden forest and then didn’t show?” (Not the exact quote.)
2.6 probably (like 90% sure) on ao3, but I read it a long time ago so I can’t remember. The plot was basically Harry forced to be with Draco in marriage or partnership. Initially Draco was very abusive, but slowly warms up to Harry. Harry gets to know the reason behind Draco’s behaviours is Lucius’ child abuse. Draco has secret bondage dungeon. He also has a shrine of Harry. Harry gets pregnant. Lucius is the main villain here. Narcissa & Snape are also here, along with the Weasleys though the later don’t make much of an appearance. Snape is the one who supplied the pregnancy potion to Harry. In one scene Draco admires Ginny’s attitude thinking she would’ve been good for Harry. In another scene, Draco & Harry are having sex, and Draco is clutching Harry by his throat but Harry loving runs his fingers through Draco’s hair. When their child is born Lucius wants to take it away but the healer who helped deliver stands in the way. Earlier in the fic Draco forces Harry to take poly juice so he could fuck a girl. Lucius dies in a fire at the end. The fire is at Malfoy manor. Though I’m not sure, but I think they spent their Christmas at the Weasleys where Draco promises to gift something to Molly. The fic also had an Author’s note on how they’ve forgiven someone for doing something similar in real life, replying to comments on how Draco is abusive to Harry.
2.7 drarry little mermaid AU. It was a dark fic, based on the original little mermaid not the Disney version and it was dark and didn’t have a happy ending. I think Draco was an elf/fae rather than a mermaid
2.8 All I remember is that it was Draco/Astoria, Harry/Ginny. Before it becomes Drarry, it was 50 chapters, and complete, I clearly remember a tag that said everyone gets a happy ending except astoria in all lowercase letters.
2.9 What I remember of the fic is only one scene so bear with me, Draco and Harry are in relationship I think and Draco is also there when order members come to take him from privet drive. And he also attends Bill’s wedding but during the death eaters attack he gets caught and they take him away to the manor, Harry cries alot after that. I this is multi chaptered. In this fic Draco defected I guess and he attends the marriage and disguises like how Harry does, but he is revealed and he is taken to the manor. Harry is devastated and then he keeps seeing him through his connection with voldermort being tortured or something. They are already in relationship at this point.

2.10 harry is getting married to Ginny and he’s sorting out all of the things for the wedding and one of them is the cake. Draco works or owns the bakery that Harry is getting the cake from and they both start to talk and get closer. That’s when Harry realises that he’s not ready to marry Ginny because a certain blonde has his heart. I’m sure Harry, when ever he’s in doubt or just bored he apparates to the bakery and dracos always holding the daily prophet to see what the saviour of the wizarding world is up to.
2.11 it was on ao3 and i read it a long time ago (i wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t exist any more) but what i remember from it was pretty intense bdsm experimentation (between harry and draco) and they both started developing feelings but weren’t saying anything and i recall them fkin around in an abandoned class room? one scene i remember vividly is harry getting triggered by something draco says or did but it had something to do with his trauma with the dursleys and he calls out the safe word for the first time (which was snitch).
2.12 I’m looking for this specific drarry texting story I read on YouTube over 3 years ago. I think that it’s no longer on YouTube, but I wanted to know if it was ever posted on any other social media. The story goes like - Ron gives Harry the password to use the prefect bathroom where Harry stumbles upon Draco. Draco ends up doing some spells with the water (like a water snake like thing) and it fascinated Harry but Draco doesn’t really indulge in the conversation. When Harry tries to leave, Draco cages him and they end up having sex.
2.13 fic on ao3 where its set in 8th year and harry and draco are still fucked up meet up to (or just end up) fight(ing) a lot and one time harry takes it a bit too far and punches draco in the stomach, and draco throws up blood? And harry has to call madame pomphrey i believe. I dont think it was a particularly long fic but thats all i can remember.
2.14 harry and draco are twins but (i think) they were separated and then they got together like finding out they are twins and also dating lmao and okay then?? they became like rulers of the wizard world by making treaties and stuff w creatures and all that

A deeper dive into my 'James is Alive AU' below the cut-- I didn't forget about it, just was finally able to write some of it out lol
A story of how James continues to have the problem of wanting his cake and eating it too.
On the night of Voldemort's murder of Lily and James, James is the first to die and the first to come into contact w/ death. An actual, physical being.
Death has been trying to catch James and his friends for a while now, ever since the first time they used the invisibility cloak. A cruel joke and reminder of the brother who escaped Death for years.
James being terrified of leaving Harry and Lily alone in a possible Voldemort run world, begins to try and bargain with Death.
Being one of the keepers of the sole item that was used to humiliate them, Death is obviously not too keen on helping. Angered that he has the nerve to ask for more time.
But James begins begging heavily, saying how he's willing to give anything to see them again.
(Death senses the request is slightly more selfish and his pride in protecting his family drives it)
Weaving an idea, Death proposes a compromise.
They will allow James to return to the living to see his son, However, a price is needed from the both of them. James is a little confused on how a baby is really suppose to give anything but is glad for the deal none the less.
A gift to Death was required, something important to James now and something important to Harry later. Harry's price will be reaped during his 16th year of life, and once the toll is complete James can return to him.
They will not elaborate on what that 'thing' is. But for 16 years James belonged to Death. He is forced to miss the first crucial moments of Harry's life, forced to worry about him and Lily for 16 years.
Another punishment all its own.
And when he does return to the living, James wont be told where he will land or in what condition he will be in.
Deaths wording is always purposeful and very careful when making deals. However Death refuses to negotiate or give James a moment to really think through their offer. He has to make a choice here and now or lose the option all together.
He quickly accepts the deal. Not being told or realizing that Lily was his toll to pay. Death makes sure that while James is dead, their spirits never meet.
On that fateful day during Harry's 16th year, when he unknowingly pays his toll, James is resurrected... in Australia. He's still James, and he still looks like James although aged as if he never left Earth for a single minute. His memory is completely wiped, he doesn't remember a thing besides waking up on the side walk in some random city.
(He remembers his first name but not his last, so he is given something that isn't Potter)
It takes James 2 years start to gather more about himself and another year altogether to regain most of his senses. He immediately sets out to find Harry.
When he makes his way back to the UK so much has changed and Harry seems to be the face of it all. James becomes self-conscious and starts to believe that maybe Harry is better off not knowing him all. After everything he's been through, to just uproot it with James returning, upset him further.
James also feels unbearably guilty, knowing he was back in a different country working and living his life while his son was suffering and literally saving the world. He doesn't know how he could even begin to explain that to him.
He returns to Australia, becoming an Unspeakable for the Australian Ministry and keeping his head filled with work and pretending like his past life wasn't oceans away.
10 years later, his work finds him intertwined with the Ministry back in the UK. And feeling that he can't run from his problems forever, he finally visits Harry.

Tomorrow, it would be a year.
A year since the Dark Lord had fallen, a year since Vincent had died, a year since life had changed forever.
He tried to feel grateful, to stay positive and thankful and humble, but it was hard. It was hard to look at the bright side- that he was alive and so was his family- when he had to dodge hateful curses daily and visit his father in Azkaban on a monthly basis.
Hogwarts had been a condition of his probation- a year of being looked after and watched closely by the Professors and the other students. He'd been indifferent about it at first. At least until he'd found out Potter was returning as well.
Potter had gotten multiple offers for jobs- the Aurors, the Cursebreakers, the Unspeakables. Why he'd chosen to return to school was beyond Draco. But somehow, they both ended up back in Scotland, students again, and at a clear crossroads.
But it had been clear very quickly that neither was in any place to want to fight- Draco was done with war in any sense of the word, and Potter was shockingly forlorn for someone who had taken down the most powerful dark wizard of all time, thereby saving most of his friends and family.
Really, every time Draco witnessed someone thank Potter, or even addressed his past efforts at all, Potter seemed downright mournful.
And Draco couldn't help but staring at Potter, following his every move, watching, a tad too transfixed, as Potter blundered his way through their eighth year. Perhaps it was the way Potter seemed to want to disappear into the very floorboards of the castle when he got attention, or the way Potter seemed almost haunted in his expressions. Or maybe it was the fact that, for the first time, Draco was able to acknowledge his more-carnal emotions and admit that Potter was quite fit and not at all bad to look at.
But it was undeniable that both he and Potter were struggling.
So, with less than twenty hours until the "Battle of Hogwarts Memorial Gala," Draco was only a little surprised to see Potter sitting alone by the lake, staring out into the dark water. He was more surprised by the bottle of firewhiskey accompanying the Chosen One.
"Potter...are you drunk?" he asked before he could stop himself, making the other man jump.
Potter got ahold of himself and chuckled. "That's the goal."
Draco knit his eyebrows together. "Why?"
"It helps me forget. Care to join?" Potter muttered, waving the bottle towards Draco.
It was all he could do not to ask if he was being pranked. Instead, he sat down hesitantly, wrapping his long fingers around the bottle. Figuring if he was going to play into this insanity, he might as well go for broke, he took a large swig, relishing a bit in the burn in his throat. "Would've thought you'd be...dunno...celebrating," he murmured, passing the bottle back to Potter.
Most people were. He knew that all of the houses were having parties tonight, and there were going to be afterparties again tomorrow. Though people were obviously mourning the anniversary of the death of loved ones, the date was mostly a reminder that Voldemort was gone, and parties seemed like the most logical way to celebrate that.
Not that Draco felt he should participate.
"Can't see celebrating a night that was so devastating," Potter replied, slurring only a little.
And for once, Draco agreed. He took another drink from the bottle and didn't reply.
"They want me to make a stupid speech tomorrow," Potter offered, not meeting his eyes. "Talk about...hope and...Merlin, and bright futures and how everything's fucking lovely now."
Draco couldn't help but snort derisively.
"S'bullshit, isn't it?" Potter asked, finally turning to him. "People are dead and I--we are still...still hurting...but let's send this message of-- of like-- fucking optimism, or something. Meanwhile, I have no idea what to do with my life, we graduate in a month, and I still can't get...these images of everyone I care about dying out of my head."
Draco felt his heart clench. It was almost insane to realize, but he could relate to what Potter was saying. He had no idea what to do with himself now that the war was over. So much of his every waking thought had been wrapped around how to stay alive and keep the people he cared about alive. Now...now he didn't know what to do with all that emptiness in his brain. And celebration seemed like an odd concept with people dead and displaced and rebuilding and he still couldn't get over the feeling that Voldemort was constantly watching him- living with the Dark Lord could do that to you.
And it seemed, amazingly, Potter could understand a lot of that.
It seemed the alcohol was also starting to hit his bloodstream, because his only reply was, "What if we both go away? To...to America, or something? Just disappear. Wonder what they'd do?"
It was just the first thing he thought, the first thing that popped into his head, a wish to get away from everything and everyone. But Potter gave him an odd look. "Together?" he asked incredulously.
But now the idea was intriguing and even though they no longer fought like children, Draco still felt like he couldn't show weakness in front of Potter, so he couldn't back down. So instead, he threw Potter a challenging grin and teased, "You've gotten multiple offers from the Aurors, Potter. I think you could handle one Death Eater if things go South."
But the light in Potter's eyes faltered. "Ex Death Eater. R-right?" he corrected, a bit unsure of himself.
Draco faltered, too, smile sliding off of his face. "Merlin, Potter. Y-yes, I mean, if we're being technical-"
"But...you regret it, right?" the other man asked, studying him closely.
It was a difficult question, and one not best answered while under the influence of alcohol, but Draco took another swig and did his best. "I...I was trying to protect my family. Myself. Surely you understand...I thought I had no choice," he took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. "But I never wanted to hurt anyone. And I never...I know how wrong I was. About-- about blood, and its importance. I'm trying to learn."
It was true. Though Muggle Studies was another condition of his probation, he had thrown himself into his studies, and realized that Muggles were rather interesting. He even had developed a lot of respect for them- it took a lot of intelligence, he realized, to find ways to survive without magic.
He had also taken the time to write apology letters to every Muggleborn he'd bullied, talking extra care with Granger's letter. He still found her to be an annoying know-it-all, and he told her so, but he respected her intellect and power.
"Hmm..." Harry hummed in response to his answer.
"Why do you care?" Draco asked before he could stop himself.
"What?"
"Why do you care whether or not I regret it?" Draco clarified, narrowing his eyebrows.
Harry shrugged, but he turned a bit pink. "It...it makes it a bit easier that you do, I guess," he said vaguely.
And Draco had no idea what that meant.
"D'you ever wonder what it'd be like if he didn't exist? Voldemort?" Harry asked, laying back on the grass lazily.
Draco contemplated that. He couldn't imagine that-- what would Potter have been like if he was raised with parents and without a price on his head? "In what way?"
"Dunno. For us, for example," Harry whispered.
He chuckled. "Do you really think it would've been that different? I can't see a world in which we would've-- what?-- been childhood friends?"
Harry also laughed, but said, "You never know. The Hat considered putting me in Slytherin."
"Bullshit," Draco retorted without thinking.
"Nah. I told it not to because--" Harry started laughing in earnest, now, "--well, amongst other things, because I thought you were a prat."
And the alcohol in Draco's system stopped him from being defensive at this, instead drawing embarrassing snorts from him that made his face turn pink.
And before long, they were both in a full-blown fit of laughter, laying next to each other, tears of mirth running down their faces.
And for the first time in a very long time, Draco felt alive.
"H- Potter?" Draco asked as their laughter died down. "You- you should skip the Gala tomorrow." He wasn't sure where the suggestion had come from, but he was pretty confident it was the right idea, now.
And Harry met his eyes and looked at him for a long time before murmuring, "Only if you skip with me."
And Draco found himself giving a small smile and nodding, actually looking forward to the next day.
