Hit-or-miss shrimp
Our shrimp man, never a slave to schedules, has been especially elusive this year.
We caught him once, a couple of weeks ago, at his customary pop-up market, a 15-minute walk from the condo we rent on Hilton Head. But I happened to be cashless that morning. He went AWOL until Friday.
His shrimp are jumbo, indeed - 9 or 10 to the pound. Sweet as can be. And, if you want, the shrimp man will pop their heads off for you, right on the spot.
However, he remains inflexible regarding his flexibility. “Please come back,” he says, but as soon as you ask,”When ... ?,” things turn murky.
My solution is to make sure I have money in my pocket whenever I walk that way.

The Bible
When I was very young, I was handed an International Children's Bible and told that this was the inspired, inerrant ("that means without errors, no mistakes"), perfect word of God.
I understood that God himself had dictated the words I now held in my hands.
A few years later I realized that the inspired men who had written God's words had not written them in English. God had not spoken English to them because they didn't speak English: they spoke Hebrew and Greek and Aramaic. So these were not God's words. They were translations of God's words.
Now that I speak more than one language myself, I know exceedingly well that things are always lost in translation. Even the best translation is imperfect, at the very least. So no Bible we have today is perfect.
Some years later I discovered that "inspired to write by" is not the same as "took dictation from."
These were never God's words.
They were the words of men who phrased, in their own ways, in their own words, the things God made them feel and think—or encouraged them to feel and think. This meant human error was a possibility even in the original manuscripts.
I learned later that no one has the original manuscripts. We have copies of copies of copies.
And they don't agree.
They don't match each other. There are so many differences between them. How can we tell which copies match the originals when we don't have the originals?
Even if we could, what does it matter given that the originals themselves might have been flawed?
I told myself that the word of God may have been imperfectly written by the original writers, but in that case maybe God had used copyists "mistakes" to correct those errors—but which ones? Which errors were correction, and which merely error?
Decades later I discovered some books of the Bible that weren't in my Bible. The Catholics had a fuller, more complete Bible!
Catholics are evil child molesters, of course; but they don't get that from their extra books, and even Hitler was right about one plus one equalling two. You can't reject everything a person believes just because they're a bad person. Why didn't my Bible have Tobit and Judith and so on? The Codex Sinaiticus has them, and it's 4th century, much closer to the originals than my ESV.
Why did we Protestants reject parts of the Bible?
Come to that, why did we not have the books of the Bible that the Bible seemed to think we should have?
I read the Bible assiduously, and when John told me "as the scripture has said" and then I didn't find the quote anywhere I became quite upset! Turns out the scripture referenced repeatedly, in Jude and 2 Peter and John, is the book of Enoch.
Why don't we have that in our modern Bibles?
We have old manuscripts of it in Aramaic and Hebrew and Latin and Greek and Coptic and—was God not trying to preserve it? The apostles call it scripture!
On and on the questions and problems went, and all my father could ever say was, "You think too much."
I was troubled by that as a youth.
I tried to stop thinking. To blindly accept: to believe without evidence, in the face of contrary evidence. But I couldn't.
Dad was right.
I think too much to be taken in by a lie.

My betrotheds mom is big in the SCA and does tons of hand sewing and period accurate clothes, she’s got several custom made outfits and enters competitions with her special projects.
One of them she meticulously researched and created a custom glove. I have no idea how much work goes into such a thing other than A Lot but whenever she tells us stories about these competitions she’s always slighted in favor of flashier offerings.
Her most recent endeavor was some kind of stiff collar. I’m not going to embarrass myself pretending to know the specifics but the original ones back in the day used layers of fabric and whale baleen to get a nice strong silhouette. She researched the crap out of it and wrote up a report to go along with the item.
At the judging one of the judges commented, “Well, it’s alright, but it’s so disappointing that it’s not fully authentic, why didn’t you use whale baleen?”
She sputtered out, “Well, if you’d read my report you’d know it’s because it’s illegal!”

One major factor missing from most debates on Arya and Lyanna's beauty is that they're being judged by their society's extremely patriarchal values. In both looks and personality, that context is essential to understanding how others perceive them. George explores the misogyny experienced by non-conforming women, especially with Arya, and it's interesting how he plays with that regarding their physical beauty.
Her mother used to say she could be pretty if she would just wash and brush her hair and take more care with her dress, the way her sister did. (The Blind Girl, ADWD) "You never knew Lyanna as I did, Robert," Ned told him. "You saw her beauty, but not the iron underneath. She would have told you that you have no business in the melee." (Eddard VII, AGOT)
These two quotes offer a nice summation of this idea. With Arya, her supposed lack of beauty is defined by her being a non-conforming wild child. Her hair is messy, her face is dirty, and she's often in "lower class" clothing while engaging in unladylike activities. None of this says anything about her physical beauty but it tells us everything about how she's perceived. Arya could be pretty...If she conforms to society's standards for a highborn Lady. With Lyanna, however, we get the opposite. Where Arya is judged based on her personality, Robert's romanticization of Lyanna is rooted solely in her looks. He doesn't know anything about the person she really was. There is an assumption that, because she looked a certain way, her personality must fit and Robert imagines her much softer and more passive than she actually was.
That Arya isn't pretty or Lyanna wasn't wild are two perceptions that George specifically pushes back against. This is where people miss the brilliance of them being linked as literary mirrors; it is largely about us learning more about Lyanna, but it touches on more than that. The significance of them being written as wild, willful, and with their own beauty is that George isn't writing his female characters around patriarchal expectations. When people debate their beauty, that's often the trapping they fall into. Beauty and non-conformity are treated as mutually exclusive factors when the story itself never makes that point; this is also the logic that leads people to the (incorrect) conclusion that Lyanna and Arya aren't meant to be similar. Arya's self-esteem issues around her looks and being a Lady make this a topic certain to be addressed in the future; George has made it a part of the story. The conclusion shouldn't be that "looks don't matter", but that looks aren't indicative of a character's value, personality, or morality.

TIL you guys also like fish!!!! please let me introduce you to the rest of my fishy community!
first of all, these are my fish tanks:
Tumblr media
this is a 20 gallon tall tank that I will be upgrading to a 37 long next year when I find out where I’m going for residency. the 5lb pressurized cannister is a CO2 tank that I use to inject carbon dioxide into the water (on a timer)! CO2 is the limiting “nutrient” for plant growth underwater in a tank like mine (with bright light and fertilizers added), so it helps encourage plant growth and more vibrant colors in plants with red and orange tones, as well as carpeting plants.
Tumblr media
this is a 6.4 gallon tank that also has CO2 injection, and currently no fish because it is cycling (and will be for about 4 weeks). it will be her highness the betta fish’s new home once it is cycled, because she keeps murdering my shrimp in the community tank. once she is moved, I will probably get a pair of honey gouramis for the community tank.
Tumblr media
this is one of the shrimp in question! she is pregnant. (eggnant, you might say.) I love her.
Tumblr media
these are my kuhli loaches! I have 6 black and 6 banded. they are technically different species and the banded ones are much more shy. they spend a lot of time swimming circles along the glass and draping themselves over plants upside-down to make me think they are dead. they get very offended when you poke them to make sure they’re not dead.
Tumblr media
I have 8 neon tetras. they’re all fat and extremely hard to take non-blurry photos of.
Tumblr media
I also have 3 hillstream loaches, which are one of my favorite fish of all time. they’re juveniles that bred from a friend’s tank, and they look like tiny little stingrays that are frequently stuck to the side of the glass. they are aufwuchs-eaters which means they scrape algae and biofilm off the surfaces of things, but they also like sifting through sand and need sufficient protein (aka. not pure algae eaters).
here’s what they look like from the bottom:
Tumblr media
I also have snails:
Tumblr media
this is the biggest of my three nerite snails! I like nerites because they have bright colors and they don’t reproduce in fresh water. however, if you get a female (like this one), they WILL lay tiny white little sesame seed eggs everywhere, even though they can’t hatch. I used to have “pest” snails in the form of bladder snails and freshwater limpets but, uh, I have a total of 15 loaches in the tank, so. I no longer have pest snails and my loaches are all well-fed. :”)
thank u for coming to my ted talk. I love fish. I love my fish. please come talk to me about fish. I leave u with one last photo of her highness in all her glory:

PPG Wiki moment:
Tumblr media
1) How do they know his weight and birthday? Is that even canon?? And 2) is that even an actual type of banjo that exists? Why are they being so specific? And 3) is that an actual canon nickname for him? Huh? …also 4) why is hillbilly drawl” in quotes? It just seems so unnecessary.
Aside from listing some actual factoids now and then, I really feel like the wiki cannot ever be trusted otherwise. 😆

I just have to remind myself sometimes that no matter what anyone else says, the way a piece of media makes me feel and the positive impact it has had on my queer identity is valid, and that tearing myself apart thinking I have to defend it or questioning my own place within queer communities is not at all important when compared to the almost tangible sense of 'rightness' that piece of media helped me to feel about myself.
#just something i've been pondering the last few days#kind of like no matter how much people debate or i suppose theoretically deconstruct media featuring queer stories#the most important thing is how it makes a queer person feel#and I do think it is of course a good thing to ensure queer stories are executed with respect and authenticity#but there's this grey area in fandom spaces in which people may have found rep from a 'unreliable' source i suppose#or something which is queerbaiting- sherlock springs to mind for example yet if people have been able to explore and nurture their own#queerness through that media does that therefore mean their experience is invalid? i don't think so#and my worry is the more we focus on theory the less we focus on emotion and therefore the actual queer experience itself#and sure theory can inform the queer experience and ensure the media is a 'healthy' site of queer identity formation and identity aid#but at the same time scorning or being rude to those who have found certain media an aid is not the right approach to be taking#especially as queer experiences are so wide ranging that one person's idea of 'good' representation is someone's else's of 'bad'#and that unless a piece of media is clearly offensive in its portrayal of queer experience there has to be some benefit of doubt#I think we're still in a period of progression in media espc tv where queer creators are coming to the fore of their own stories#and we've got to 'live and let live' a little about where people are finding sights of queer validation and joy#and perhaps this a naive and simplistic way of thinking but i think queer people can either recognise when something isn't the best rep#but was helpful for them anyway and therefore in a way confer 'ownership' of the media to themselves in how they engage#or there is variety in queer experiences represented in media so that perhaps not everyone finds a 'site' of rep but that does not#therefore invalidate it or make it 'bad' representation#this is just my opinion and it'd be hypocritical for me to not now mention this is only formed from my own queer experience lol#so i'm not trying to tell anyone how to feel or anything just something i'm pondering

Hendrickson: Date of birth?
Gilthunder: August 26th, 455.
Hendrickson: Age?
Gilthunder: Can't you figure that out based on my date of birth?
Hendrickson: ....I'm a Great Holy Knight, Gilthunder, not a mathematician.

When you just learned that poplar trees are sacred to Persephone and some said Persephone and Leuce are companions
Persephone: You dated LEUCE??? Hades: Persephone, please, it was all in the past now- Persephone: What did she see in you that she doesn't see in me?!! Hades: ...What? Persephone: I tried wooing her years ago but she never reciprocate. And you just waltz in and swoop her away that easily. Hades: ... Persephone: I don't know whether to be impressed or angered that you have more charm than me.

If the Train gave all the passengers grey jumpsuits before Amelia got involved, and it usually doesn't let you take stuff from the Train home... at what point did it give your stuff back? Did One send a Steward to give your clothes back when you got your Exit? Kez seems to know about the Stewards, but she seemed surprised when it brought gifts. Did it never show up to return Jeremy's stuff? We see him wearing normal clothes in the photo, but that was given to him by Morgan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Where does the line fall between what you're allowed to keep and not? Jesse doesn't get to take the Apex harpoon pack with him. Lake gets to keep the clothes and the bank pen bracelet, but the handcuffs don't go through. They stay attached until Lake makes it all the way through, even after both arms are already on the other side. The cuffs only disappear after the door closes. The harpoon pack only falls dramatically after the last trace of the glowing doorway has faded away, even though Jesse was still wearing it when Lake last saw him. It almost lets you bring things up until the last second before snatching it back.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The determining factor seems to be if it could be used to prove the Train's existence. Maybe the handcuffs were left behind because they were from the Mirror World, which the Train seems to consider to be under its jurisdiction. It seems to let you keep the clothes on your back, but if the jumpsuits made it though then they could have been used as proof. In that case, would it just spit the passengers out with nothing? The exits seem to work like doorways, so it probably wasn't returning your stuff as you passed through.
Chances are, it lets you keep your outfit within reason. It may be a magical train that kidnaps people and forced them through therapy from hell, but it has STANDARDS! If it looks like something you could find on Earth, then there would be no reason not to let you take it. If its something completely inexplicable like a custom-made harpoon pack, then that has to stay. But some normal looking clothes you stole from an abandoned mall would probably be fair game. It also probably wouldn't let you say, throw a bunch of apples through the open Exit in an attempt to solve world hunger, as amazing as that could be. The Train doesn't care if you starve as a passenger, why would it care if you starve on Earth?
Tumblr media
Random stuff in pockets or backpacks might be up for debate. Tulip probably still had the Donut Holer in her backpack, but someone who ran away for months coming back with a pipe for self-defense doesn't seem out of the ordinary. Nobody knows where she was, for all they know she could have needed it. It was confirmed in an AMA that if Jesse's phone had remained un-smashed, then his photos would have ended up blurry and worthless as evidence. It seems important that the Train keeps itself secret under most circumstances. There are reasons it wasn't willing to let Denizens get their own numbers. If everybody knows about the Train, then they won't want to get on.
But when the hell was One planning to give back their clothes? Did Jeremey not have any need for his stuff because Morgan and Kez took such good care of him? Or did One just say "Yoink! This is mine now!" every time someone brought something on board? At what point in the pre-Amelia process were personal belongings dealt with? How many people lost their keys in the process? How many passengers never got their stuff back?
