What they do for their sick s/o who can’t leave the ship
Luffy, Zoro, Usopp, Robin, Franky, Brook
Tumblr media
CW: SFW. This is just fluff. no drugs, no alcohol, no smokes, just tea and candy. Comfort. They go above and beyond for you.
Scenario: After weeks at sea, you finally reached an island, but you were unable to leave the ship. You had the flu, and because it came with a cough, fever and chills, you were not allowed to leave your bed. Your s/o went on the island to get some goods, and maybe they have a surprise for you.
Read part 2 here: Sanji, Nami, Law, Penguin & Shachi, Kid, Killer
Tumblr media
Monkey D. Luffy
- He was sad that he couldn’t take you on an adventure. - He even tried to steal you away from Chopper, who was keeping you company, in a disguise and a wheelchair, but he got caught. - At first, Luffy explored the whole island, caused some trouble, stole some food and was finally done with his adventure. It’s one of the smaller islands, so it didn’t take him long. - Then he tried to think of a cure for you. If he was sick, he would probably like some meat and he would be cured instantly. What did you like… Oh! Candy! - He went to the nearest store and bought all their candy. It wasn’t that he didn't know what you liked. He just wanted to be safe than sorry. Because if you wanted more when you're back on the open sea, you'd both be sad. Yeah, all the candy should be enough and if there are leftovers, he will gladly volunteer to eat them. - "I bought you candy! Since you like them, you will be cured in no time!" Luffy explained with his biggest smile. You were dumbfounded by his explanation and all the candy was piled up beside your bed. You chuckled at his words. Candy and smiles. This man was all you needed. - Later Luffy showered you with kisses while you both ate some candy. “Don’t kiss my mouth, idiot. I don’t want you to get sick, too!” - "But I can't get sick. I'm rubber and very immune since the incident with the poisonous guy." He smiled proudly and you just hugged him a little tighter.
Tumblr media
Roronoa Zoro
- He was lost. - Yes, he'd promised to stay close and not get lost. Now he was standing on a hill on the other side of the island, wondering how he got here in the first place. A second ago, he'd been on the beach next to the Sunny looking for a shell you'd like and now this. - On his way back, he was looking for something to comfort you, but he didn't know what or where. - Just as he was about to give up and ask someone, he passed a store that sold pillows. - The saleswoman recommended the heated ones for a sick partner. He chose a green, fluffy one, with a removable heating pad. Now all he had to do was get back to the ship. - It was just before sunset, when he returned. Everyone was annoyed that he had wandered off, but he ignored them all and went to prepare your gift. -  As he handed you your gift, the pillow was already heated. "Oh wow! Thank you Zoro, I love it. Did you heat it?" your eyes sparkled with joy. "...I had some help...from that damn curly brow." He admitted hesitantly. "You asked Sanji?" You were surprised that he asked him, but you didn’t push the matter. You let him sit behind you and snuggled up to him. - You were so proud of him and so grateful, that he had gotten you something. You kissed his cheek lightly and he wrapped his arms around you, as you both drifted off to sleep, a warm pillow in your lap.
Tumblr media
Usopp
- He was just unlucky. He wanted to stay on the ship so badly. No Marines, no tasks, just watching you and the ship sounded so good. But the odds were against him. Nami gave him a list of herbs to collect for Chopper, to stock the medicine cabinet and only he was able to gather them. - You waved him off and told him, that 'only the great Captain Usopp' could find the herbs. Your words boosted his ego and his strides became stable and proud. - He will go around the island and collect the herbs along with small things that caught his eye, like stones or leaves or abandoned things. - When he returns, he will show them to you and tell you how 'the mighty Captain Usopp got his hands on this treasure. How he fought beasts and giant ants and even tricked the devil himself to collect all the treasures and herbs.
Tumblr media
Nico Robin
- Who were you to deny Robin an expedition on the island? She sat restlessly beside you and you would have loved to join her, but you would have been of no help to her. - You talked to her, and she eventually went off on her own. You were sure that she would find places on the island that no one had seen in decades, and you were right, when she came home in the evening. - Robin would tell you everything she had discovered in the far corners of the island and you loved to listen. Her stories were always captivating you and her voice just added to that. - The smile on both of your faces was proof enough that the day was great, even if you stayed in bed and cured your sickness. - When you thought that was all, she handed you an eternal pod for this island. “I found it in the ruins and it still works. There is a huge waterfall I would like to show you one day.”
Tumblr media
Franky
- Franky saw how sad you were, that you had to stay in bed, so he locked himself in and crafted something for you before he left for the island. - He takes the little robot he crafted around the island. At every sightseeing place, or just where he came along and thought of you, he took a picture of himself and the robot in front of the place. After his sightseeing tour, he took his time to prepare your gift, before coming to see you. - He knocked and came in with a bright smile and a small box. “Suuuper evening! I have something for you.” - He handed you the box excitedly and sat down next to your bed. You opened the lid and looked at the little robot. A smile spread on your face. “It’s great, Franky, thank you.” – “I was thinking of you as I made it. Look, I even took pictures.” You investigated the box again and took out the photos. “So the two of you went on a sightseeing tour without me?” You chuckled and looked through the photos with Franky, while he told you about his island adventures.
Tumblr media
Brook
- He wanted to stay and keep you company over a nice cup of tea, but you insisted that he go to the island. He had been in the fog for so long and you would never keep him from seeing the world. - So he went for a walk, but it was not as entertaining without you. - When he came across a field of flowers, he picked a bouquet of your favorite colors and flowers. On his way back to the Sunny he stopped at a tea and spice shop. He had an excellent taste in tea and it would help you get better soon. So he chose a tea that would be to your liking and help with your sickness. - “Yooohohoho! I’m back!” He chimed as he entered the room. He handed you the flowers and placed two cups of tea on your nightstand. “Oh wow, how lovely, thank you.” You smiled at the flowers and placed them on the nightstand. “I'll have to get a vase for them.” – “You stay in bed. I’ll get the vase. Meanwhile, I got this nice tea just for you, you should try it. The right cup is yours.” You took the cup and inhaled the aromatic scent while Brook got a vase for your flowers. He told you stories about the island while you both drank your tea and smiled. The tea was delicious, and his stories warmed your heart.

Doflamingo simping for you.
Male Reader x Doffy.
Tumblr media
Summary: you are a straw hat pirate and you have to deal with Doflamingo simping for you. Male Reader.
Doffy wants to kill all the strawhats pirates except his precious Y/N.
he invited (ordered) you a thousand times to join him but you declined.
Doffy wonders why he doesn't just use his strings and kidnap you as he usually would, it would be so easy, but he doesn't want you to be mad at him.
he gets jealous asf when he thinks about how you spend your days with Luffy, Zoro and Sanji.
Your crewmates become extra protective, they don't want Doffy to take you away from them, he's still an enemy after all.
even the donquixote family are shocked by Doffy simping for someone, they noticed how weird he acts around you.
when you have to fight Doffy he teases you a lot, he really flirts with you in the middle of battle.
his eyes don't turn into hearts, but Doffy definitely does his signature sadistic smile when he sees you.
just like Luffy, you are too innocent to notice when someone has a crush on you, Doffy is just a weird guy in your opinion.
Doffy loves to send fancy gifts to his beloved y/n.
Doffy has connections all over the world so he always knows where you are and how to find you.
Doffy doesn't have nightmares anymore, now he dreams of you by his side, watching the world burn.
whoever is the unlucky marine guard who hurts you in front of Doffy will suffer the consequences. (let's just pray for their poor souls)
no matter how much you reject him or hurt his ego, Doffy will never get tired of trying to please his beloved y/n.

i know it might have been mentioned before, but if it hasn't been touched on already, could we pretty pretty pls see what a marine au for memos would look like? who would Hoku work for? would she ironically make for a good marine?
The following AU takes place in a timeline where Hoku did eventually join the Marines. After spending time on Dawn Island with Luffy, when Hoku sets off on her own journey, reuniting with Ace, meeting Hack, etc, only after fixing up Mayman/meeting Kid, does she seek out Tsuru and decide to take her up on her offer to become "an upstanding marine" and to avoid Luffy
(The scene with Shanks below takes place sometime 3D2Y post-time skip)
Hoku decides to play at being a marine because she (1) finds them constantly in the line of fire and at risk of work hazards (2) believes there's something specific she can do from the inside of the institute she'd like to explore, mainly helping other Pokians and maaaaaybe making things a bit easier for a certain king of pirates (because she knows she can always quit!) (3) it will help her avoid being a pirate with luffy and being involved further in the main story
Despite this plan, she still seems to run into one too many pirates
"What's your relationship with Straw Hat Luffy?" "Who's that?" "Our men saw him trying to kidnap you onto his ship! Was it for ransom?" "He just wanted me to try Sanji's new dish."
"But you're a marine, we're supposed to be capturing pirates?"
"I didn't see that in the handbook."
"But you never read the handbook!"
Hoku underwent rigorous training with Tsuru, mainly under the tough old lady's jurisdiction—this helps her particularly avoid discipline from several other marines. There have often been requests for her to join other commands, some from marines who want to teach her a lesson, others from marines who genuinely have fun working with her
When Tsuru isn't training her, she's being worked to near death by Garp
She has one of the highest disciplinary records in academy history
Some cadets don't understand how she can get away with getting into so much trouble, sometimes a marine grunt will see her being forced to clean out an entire base's cafeteria while someone supervises and they're like?? again??? how is she not in impel down?? tried for mutiny??
Some people eventually get the memo—it's favoritism/abuse of power/strangely good luck in some occasions
Some marines don't like it one bit, they have it out for Hoku, she doesn't really care
Garp never, ever stops talking anyone's ear off about how his beautiful, adorable granddaughter is going to be one of the best marine's the world has ever seen
Tsuru has unofficially officially made herself Hoku's grandmother in a way. She and Garp often have petty fights over Hoku stories. They fight a lot over who's squad Hoku has to be on
Over the years, she's actually made enough contributions and done quite the number of great feats, enough to land her at captain level, (rear admiral candidate at Tsuru and Garp's behest) but Hoku sometimes keeps her petty officer title, keeping the perks that come with captain status and the likes
She doesn't mind abusing her power and shrugging off her responsibilities
Whenever she's assigned missions where she has a whole squad to take care of, the marines assigned to her are usually wary, uncertain and thinking they're unlucky
Until they actually work with Hoku and are like??? we're doing work today? did we just bust this human trafficking ring? did we just liberate an entire island stuck in a pirate tyranny? and other times they come, asking her what their job is for today and she's just like? go home there's nothing to do
If they really bother her, she'll send them off to different islands and countries that need help. "Go distribute these supplies to here." "They asked for someone to help rebuild their village." "Put those dumb ships to use and go delivery this to them."
Hoku has made her way around several different bases, under several different chains of commands, (she is now infamous) usually on a sort of temp job kind of borrowed basis, but officially she's under Tsuru's wing
Smoker has gone through several different stages of mental strife and grief with Hoku, originally being distrustful when the criminal who blew up a base in Tretar became a marine, then becoming somewhat determined to help mold her into a damn good marine, then to becoming strangely fixed (obsessed) with either being in charge of ensuring she receives punishment/is not mistreated for her origins within the lower ranks, and they are even sometimes seen gambling together on occasion. They have a funny relationship these two, Hoku's too lazy to try to understand it.
Her outfit as a marine is a lot like her original, however she wears a black top instead of white and with black pants. Her jacket is white instead with her usual accessories, and the only thing that helps people actually identify her as a marine is the standard issue marine cap she wears
Hoku has also secretly become a huge collector of wanted posters. It originally started small, just taking the wanted posters of people she cared about, but now it's spiraled into a full-on sizable collection where she has different versions of wanted posters, original prints, first roll-outs and etc. She trades with Bradnew and other marines and hangs them all up on her wall or keeps them safe in a minted book
Hoku often abuses any and all of her rights as a marine. She's really, really good at being a bad marine.
"Hey, did you hear the news?"
The petty officer looked up from where they'd been tasked to dust and clean the entire meeting room to perfection. Several other cadets and chore boys had been called from the barracks, each ordered to ensure that the following few rooms that would be in use for the meeting would be ready at a moment's notice.
For what meeting? He had no idea.
"No," he said, because he didn't know. There was so much gossip going around base these days he could hardly keep up. "What was it?"
First there'd been the rumor that one of the Four Emperors of the sea was on the move about the Grand Line, cutting and going as he pleased. Any movement from an Emperor was grounds for mass panic. Then there'd been talk that newly appointed Fleet Admiral Akainu had almost burned another ranking marine alive. Less serious and more on the interesting side, word was floating around that the Vice Admiral Smoker was seeing someone, which was juicy gossip in its own right because Vice Admiral Smoker?
"Apparently he's always following her around," someone said.
"He requests transfers and is always grumbling about them, I think he's worried they're going to end up with someone else—"
"Even Captain Tashigi seems to be aware and they're always—"
For today, however, it seemed something different was brewing amongst headquarters. Other officers were making a ruckus while the upper brass seemed particularly miffed—which usually only happened if it involved someone outside their scope of power influence doing something they didn't like—
"One of the Seven Warlords is visiting HQ!"
The petty officer blinked, opening his mouth before closing it and then finally deciding on his next words, "Well, that's big news, but it's not unheard of news man. They're required to come for summons."
The petty officer shrugged. "Especially people like Bartholomew Kuma or First-Son of the Sea Jimbei. They're always on time."
"No, no, you don't understand," the marine looked around as though someone would hear before motioning for the petty officer to come closer. He rolled his eyes, leaning over the table. "It isn't just any of the Warlords... It's Hawk-Eye Mihawk!"
The petty officer dropped his broom, turning to his fellow marine. The other man looked smug now. "Dracule Mihawk is coming to HQ?"
"That's what I'm saying!"
"You should've said so sooner!" the petty officer scooped up his broom, renewing his cleaning with vigor. "He's not just a regular Warlord—that guy never responds to his summons! Never!"
"See what I mean! This is big news! Why now? What do you think convinced him to come?"
"It must be something big," he said, shaking his head as the two of them not-so-discreetly made their way to the wide windows overlooking the base's dock. They'd get a full view of the elusive swordsman this way. "Do you think they're mobilizing for something?"
"I don't know, man. Think they'll let us sit in on the—"
A loud clamor came from the ground level beneath them. The two marines quickly looked at each other and then pressed their faces up against the glass. Their fellow officers below them were rushing around on the docks, forming into greeting lines and looking sick with nervousness. One man seemed to be praying.
It was understandable behavior, to be honest. Dracule Mihawk was known for being an unknown man and more often then not he'd felled one too many marine ships simply because they'd been in his way.
"I see his ship!" the marine beside him said. They pressed harder to the glass, squinting for the full view. "Always gives me the creeps. Who sails around in a coffin?"
He thought about telling his fellow officer that there was quite the number of weirder ships out there, but the sudden silence below them made the two of them pause. They glanced to each other and then back down.
The dock had gone eerily silent. Marines shook at the knees while hardened captains and a single vice admiral waited to greet the Warlord of the Sea.
One figure, however, suddenly came into view along the dock, sticking out like a sore thumb compared to the rest.
Her bright white hair fluttered absently with the wind, tugged this way and that as she paced up and down the dock, looking out across the ocean. She skirted the edge of the pier, however, just shy of the water with her hands stuffed into her jacket pockets.
"Who the hell is that?" the marine beside him said. "And why isn't she falling into line? What's her rank?"
"That's..." the petty officer caught a full view of the woman's face now, freezing at the infamous half-heart curving around her eye. "Cap—Serga—Lieute—" he paused, uncertain of her current ranking now. "Officer Hoku!"
"Hoku?" the marine looked confused, "who the hell is that?"
"Officer Hoku!" the petty officer repeated, looking at the man in shock. "You haven't heard of her? Vice Admiral Tsuru's right hand woman, the officer who blew up over ten marine bases—"
"She blew up our own bases?"
"It's a long story—the woman who apparently violated the nefarious Trafalgar Law—"
"Violated?"
"I heard what she did to him was so disgusting, even the officers near her threw up themselves! The one who fought Fleet Admiral Akainu's authority multiple times, got caught gambling in Crocodile's casino, vandalized a whole part of Marineford—"
"And she's not in Impel Down?" the man said, aghast. "Are you sure she's on our side?"
"Oh, sure. She's been credited with busting the largest human trafficking rings in history! She's also brought in multiple heinous pirates, and on multiple occasions they say she's been able to deescalate several run-ins with huge bounty pirates like the Straw—"
"I guess it makes sense why they're sending her to meet someone like a shichibukai," the marine said thoughtfully. The petty officer paused, a bit offended he didn't get to finish Hoku's infamous and notorious list. "Need a crazy officer to handle a crazy pirate, right?"
A commotion finally broke out below them. The vice admiral waiting to oversee the whole affair was shouting at Hoku now, lecturing her about her lack of respect. The white haired marine simply took a seat on a wooden crate, picking at her ear and absently flicking off toward the vice admiral's feet.
The marine gaped while the petty officer stiffled a laugh with a cough.
"Look, it's him!"
Hoku seemed to have thought the same thing, turning sharply from the vice admiral and jumping to her feet. A single, haunting figure of a man stepped out from the edge of his coffin. His coat flared out dangerously about his heels, wind catching against the fluffed plume atop his head. Cadets started to shake at the knees at the sight of the man—
"Mihawk!"
The cadets around them went completely pale, jaws growing slack as Hoku flew across the dock, taking off with a flying leap and sailing through the air, arms and legs oustretched.
Dracule Mihawk did not move. He remained, still as a statue as the marine promptly wrapped her arms and legs around his head. The vice admiral's jaw dropped to the floor, one hand reaching for his saber uselessly.
Mihawk remained still, allowing Hoku to situate herself as she rubbed her cheek over the top of his hat, laughing with a sound so sweet with joy, it made the petty officer flush. She turned around, keeping herself wrapped completely over his head.
The rest of the marines continued to stare, waiting for Mihawk to throw her into the water or cut her in half.
"I didn't know you were coming to visit!" Hoku said happily, eyes shining with affection. "What's it for? You get called in by the brass or somethin'?"
"It was a whim." Mihawk neither cut her nor tossed her into the ocean. Instead, the man simply began to walk with perfect ease, toting Hoku along as though she were an added weight to his hat. "I will be departing shortly."
"Already! You've got a stay for at least a bit! Actually, aren't you hear for a meeting?"
"I heard of no such thing."
"Oh, cool then! Why don't we grab something to eat?"
"You mean to spar?"
"I-I never said that! Eat! I said eat!"
"Come, then. We shall take up arms—"
"Wait, wait, wait!"
The petty officer quickly began to add another feat to Hoku's growing list. The marine beside him continued to gape.
- - - - - - - - -
"Hmm," Hoku's brows furrowed in thought, fingers moving in a rhythmic, soothing motion. "This isn't a bad idea, right?"
"It's a bit cramped."
"Right, right, sorry about that. Just give it a few more minutes. Those guys out there are runnin' around like chickens without a head."
"Aye."
Hoku's fingers flexed. Her cheeks flushed a bit as she cleared her throat. As subtly as she could, she pressed herself tighter to the figure squeezed into the armory closet beside her. He made no move in protest, simply shuffling a bit to accommodate her and Hoku felt her cheeks flush.
"Do you need more room?" he asked.
"No, no," Hoku cleared her throat. "Sorry. Mind if I get a bit closer."
"That's okay," he said kindly. "I don't mind."
Hoku sneakily reached her arms more around his waist. He turned again in her arms and she felt her heart hammer wildly now, cheeks flushed as she slowly, carefully pressed her cheek against him.
Hoku shut her eyes in bliss. Soft. Like a cloud. And so warm. So, so warm. Ka. I don't mind staying like this for another hour—
"Shambles."
Hoku let out a squawk of surprise, her and her companion ripped clean from the closet and appearing hovering in the air for a moment. A thin film of blue surrounded the two of them, Hoku's arms and legs wrapped shamefully and scandalously around the other as her eyes went wide and then they both crashed onto cobblestone floors.
Hoku groaned, a second flick of someone's fingers leaving her on her ass before a pair of long legs. She rubbed her tailbone, looking up with a disgruntled frown as dark, brooding eyes gazed directly back at her.
"Traffy," Hoku greeted casually. "I didn't know you were here."
Law gave Hoku one long, withering look before he glanced over to the mound of soft white fur collapsed on the floor still, his fluffy cheeks flushed a soft pink.
"Were you taking advantage of Bepo?"
Hoku coughed. She refused to meet Law's eyes, fiddling instead with the top of his boot.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Captain Hoku!" Hoku blinked, looking around the side of Law's legs as a crowd of marines skidded to a halt before them. "Shall we arrest these fiends?"
"Nah," Hoku sighed, standing up as she dusted herself off. Law tipped his head to the side, regarding her coolly. "No need."
"B-But they're pirates!"
"I didn't see anything." Hoku turned on her heel, giving Bepo a wink. The polar bear's cheeks flushed a brighter pink and she grinned, saunteering off. "Let's head back to the ship—"
Tattooed fingers enclosed smoothly around her wrist. Hoku blinked, once, twice, before she glanced down to the larger hand engulfing hers. She followed it up to a calm, unreadable expression, dark, half-lidded eyes slowly meeting her own.
Something devious flickered, like a dark little shadow across Law's face.
Hoku paled.
"On an island surrounded by marines," Law said slowly, his voice low, curling around her ears. "I suppose we ought to take a hostage for safe passage, right?"
Hoku grinned nervously.
-------- ------ -------
"Cap—Officer Hoku! Officer Hoku!"
Hoku sighed, forcing her eyes to remain shut. Sunlight warmed the exposed skin of her belly, whispering temptingly to urge her into a well-needed nap in a rare moment of peace. The island they'd been called to investigate had seemed to resolved itself, no more terrorizing, plundering pirates and simply happy, cheerful townsfolk.
She didn't know what good luck had helped them out, but she wasn't about to complain over a free chance to kick back on the island before HQ called them back. They weren't expected for another week—this was the perfect chance to slack offcget some rest.
Hurried footsteps still rushed her way. Hoku kept her arms behind her head, lounging over one of her drawn hammocks. Usually ignoring them for awhile did the trick—
"Officer Hoku!" the marine finally panted, wheezing as she skidded to a halt beside Hoku. "Cap—Hoku! It's an emergency!"
Hoku kept silent, turning onto her side.
"The—at the docks," the girl panted. Her eyes were round with fear, knees shaking. "Docks!"
Hoku continued to sway peacefully in the sun.
"A ship, docked!" she inhaled a great breath of air.
"It's one of the Four Emperor's of the Sea—Red Haired Shanks!"
Hoku slipped out of her hammock, slamming face first into the wood below her. The marine jumped, hands flying to her mouth as Hoku quickly shot to her feet, nose red from her fall and eyes wide in disbelief.
"Who?"
"Red Haired Shanks!" the marine cried. Hoku's jaw went slack, eyes round. "O-Our men are currently in a perimeter around him! Apparently he's been spending time on this island for the past few days and—"
"They're doing what?" Hoku squawked. "Our orders are to never engage with Emperors unless ordered—oh for—ka!"
The marine opened her mouth to deliver the most pressing part of the news, but Hoku was already running past her, racing faster than she could ever hope to catch up to.
"And he's..." the marine started weakly. "Asking for you..."
Hoku skidded to a halt before massive blockade of blue and white bodies. She scowled, quickly forcing her way through, barking out quick and concise orders as her men whirled around, eyes widening at her appearance, jumping in and shouting left and right about emperor, what do we do? and Captain Hoku, stay back! This man is—
Hoku let out a screech as she tripped into the clearing, finally pushing past the wall of bodies.
A single arm reached out, a hand wrapping gently around her arm to hold her steady.
Hoku froze, her eyes shooting up.
"Dove," Shanks said, voice thick with fondness. "It's been awhile."
Hoku's traitorous heart fluttered at the sight of that slow, cheerful grin. She pointedly coughed, dusting herself off as Shanks' eyes flickered with amusement, stepping back, fingers lingering slightly on her arm so she could straighten herself.
"Pirate," Hoku said casually, the hint of a tease in her tone. Shanks raised a playful brow in turn. "As... what rank am I right now?"she turned to her men behind her.
"Just an officer, ma'am!"
"As commanding officer," Hoku crossed her arms over her chest. Shanks hand fell back to his side, fingers curling slightly. "I'm obligated to ask what one of the Four Emperors of the Sea is doing in this humble town."
"Well," Shanks glanced over his shoulder, back toward the dock where the Red Force was waiting. He could sense the playful jeers of his crew over the lip of the bow. "Miss Marine... It isn't a crime to be stocking up on some supplies and catching a short break now, is it?"
Hoku pretened to think his words over. Shanks' eyes glimmered with mirth.
The marine surrounded them continued to gape, frozen in disbelief.
"It's interesting timing," Hoku said. Shanks hummed for her to continue. "We were originally here on a distress call, but just as we were about to dock, we found out the issue had already been taken care of..."
"What luck," Shanks said with a grin. "I suppose that leaves you with some time to perhaps... relax yourself, aye?"
Hoku's mouth parted to retort and then she paused. Hoku blinked, looking up at Shanks in stunned surprise as she tried to make the little click of what she'd just heard in her head. But when he says it like that... no, wait. There's no way he'd know—huh?
Shanks watched the gears turn, eyes crinkling at the corners. "I know how hard you marines are always working—"
"Hoku!" Shanks eyes flickered to where a man broke the ranks of the gathered crowd, shoulders squared with whatever confidence he'd mustered. Shanks regarded him easily, expression relaxed as he approached Hoku. "We should retreat! We need to leave immediately and report the situation back to HQ!"
Hoku turned back to the marine. "It's alright. It's... a bit of a long story, but you guys know how it goes these days. He's—"
"Not like one of the other pirates!" the marine continued, gaze fearfully flickering to an amused looking Shanks and back. "With the others we understood, but this is an Emperor of the Sea! Cap—Officer Hoku, we should go!"
"I know, I know," Hoku appeased. "But don't—"
A different marine broke the ranks now, reaching out a grabbing Hoku's elbow. The first marine looked shocked while Hoku remained nonchalant, expression cool.
Shanks' gaze slowly flickered to where his fingers pressed indents into her skin.
The marine scowled viciously. "I ain't gettin' fired because of—
Shanks simply glanced over the top of Hoku's head.
Hoku's knees buckled for a moment, trembling under the sheer force until she quickly rightened herself, looking up at the pirate before her in disbelief.
Left and right the marine officers behind her dropped to the floor like flies, foam spilling out of some of their mouths as they crashed onto the ground. The man who'd grabbed Hoku in particular had been the first to collapse, hacking and clawing at his head before he fell face forward, pale and ashen. Hoku watched all of them, jaw going slack until not a single man was left standing, wiped out in a manner of seconds.
Warily, she turned her gaze back to playfully dark eyes, already watching her in turn.
"...even I have to say," Hoku began slowly, "that was a bit much, don't you think?"
"I never said I was a patient man," Shanks said almost sweetly, but his tone was sly and his eyes crinkled at the corners, shameless. "Now, Dove..."
Shanks offered her his arm, lips curling at the corner into something mischievous. His eyes watched her, half-lidded and almost lazy.
They burned, never leaving her face.
Hoku felt her pulse racing beneath her skin, forcing herself to appear relaxed.
"Shall we catch up a bit?" Shanks said, a slight husk to his tone.
"...I could threaten to make quite the arrest you know," Hoku said, only because she needed time to calm down.
Shanks tipped his head to the side, seeming to humor the thought. He hummed then, shutting his eyes as though going a step further and imagining the scenario. He turned his arm toward her, offering his wrist.
"I suppose I could come willingly," he said lightly, his words curling all about her, "If it were a beautiful woman like you... but I'm afraid I've only got one hand to offer..."
Shanks grinned impishly. "You'd have to cuff me to yourself."
Hoku snorted, crossing her arms over her chest. Shanks laughed, a full, cheerful sound. "You sure that's a good idea?"
"Well, I suppose it could be quite a bit to handle."
"More than you can handle?" Hoku grinned.
Shanks' eyes glittered then, like a ripple, and Hoku felt a thin shiver run down her spine, like the playful drag of a fingertip ghosting along her back.
"I don't know," Shanks murmured into her ear, leaning down. "I'd have to find out for myself."
Weakly, Hoku hooked her arm through his, making the decision for him.
Shanks laughed, a bellowing, heartfelt sound. He pulled her along into his side, his cloak flaring out behind them, almost wrapping around Hoku as they made their way down to the port.
"Aw, dove, don't pout. I promise I won't bite."
"You might lose a tooth or two if you try that."
"Dahaha! I thought you'd be sweeter since it's been so long! Is this any kind of reunion?"
"I was never sweet to you."
"Mmm, what does a man have to do to get a woman out of his league to give him a smile half as sweet as the ones she gives to that brooding—"
"Ten million beli," Hoku said on instinct. She paused then, suddenly growing pale as she half turned to Shanks, stepping a step back but unable to get very far with her arm still hooked through his—Shanks let her go a little ways away.
(But not very far.)
"Actually, wait, I take that—"
"Why, dove," Shanks laughed, grinning almost boyishly. "I suppose that could be easily arranged—"
"Yeah, yeah, yeah," Hoku grumbled, trying to force the embarrassed red crawling up her neck to disappear. Shanks watched the dark flush along the nape of her neck with half-lidded eyes. "I know that amount ain't much these days to an Emperor of the seas—"
"It isn't that," Shanks said lightly, his words curling playfully. Hoku blinked, looking back up at him curiously.
Deep red stood out brightly against the expanse of white. Strands of Shanks' hair tickled against the side of her head as Hoku froze. Shanks leaned down, curling around her, smoothly tucking her against his side—the action forced Hoku to bend a bit, back arching ever so slightly as Shanks' lips brushed against her ear.
Hoku caught a glimpse of dark eyes beneath crimson strands. They curved, playful as always at the corners, but still a shudder threatened to run through her—the light press of Shanks' fingers on the side of her hip—when did he move his hand—
"You're worth much more than that, dove."
Hoku swallowed. She meant to say, "Oh, yeah?" but the sound that came out instead was a soft, slightly shaky, "Mmnh?"
Shanks hummed in affirmation, his eyes absently sliding behind her. "But I suppose it's easy to forget that when you've been surrounded by men who don't quite..." his gaze swept over the passed out, foaming marines at their feet, "Know how to value a woman properly, aye?"
Shanks paused briefly, brows raising slightly in surprise as he glanced down to the slender, scarred fingers now examining Gryphon, slid clean from its sheath. His sword rested with care in Hoku's hands as she inspected the current status of the blade.
Her eyes were half-lidded in faux disinterest, expression cool as she absently met his brightening gaze.
"And a heinous, shameless pirate would know better?"
"Hmm," Shanks grinned, walking the two of them back deeper into port. He remembered there being quite the delicious chef charring food in an open fire pit by the port.
"I suppose we'll have to find out."
-the shanks was too self-indulgent, anytime i think of writing a little bit of this man, he manages to steal another paragraph from me

Clinic Day
Author’s Note: This is the next installment of Cedric's story - watch him struggle to integrate into the Husbandry AU. First. Previous. Next
Tagged: @the-pure-angel @egrets-not-regrets @kit-williams
Warnings: misunderstandings
Summary: Cedric works in the Astartes run health care clinic in the town he’s found himself living in, on ancient Terra.
In the handful of weeks that Cedric has spent on Ancient Terra, most of it has been spent in one of the eight Astartes bases in the large - for the time period's - city. As an apothecary in training, most of his days were spent working alongside older Apothecaries, learning whatever they were willing to teach him... And there was almost always a squad of Imperial Fists near wherever Cedric was working, for reasons that the young Black Templar hadn't questioned. They were the closest thing  he had to direct superiors and though they weren't Black Templars, his chapter had been founded by one of the Fists' First Captains, and their presence helped immensely.
He was curious as to why he hadn't seen any other Black Templars in the area. He'd seen Ultramarines - and several different of their successor chapters - as well as Imperial Fists - he'd spoke briefly with the Fist who'd been made Chapter Master (a stern and no-nonsense older brother who went by the name Mirros)... He'd seen plenty of Blood Angels - and members of their successor chapters (Including the perpetually unlucky Lamenters - poor, poor bastards), Salamanders, the occasional White Scar or Iron Hand... Cedric had patched up more than one pack of Space Wolves, or pod of Charcarodoons... He'd seen at least two or three of every first founded Loyalist chapter, as well as some of their most numerous successor chapters. But where were his fellow Black Templars? It was a question that had been starting to bother him rather persistently, though the young Apothecary wasn't exactly sure how to ask the question, nor to whom he should ask.
"Oi! Apothecary, are you going to continue to stare off into space, or are you going to help me?" A loud, irritated voice growled out in High Gothic, snapping Cedric out of his internal musings.
Cedric dipped his head a little and responded to the growly Marine with a slightly apologetic "What have you come in for?" He was one of a half-dozen Astartes Apothecaries who were working at this medical clinic. It was available for both baseline human use as well as for any Astartes in need of help. Cedric was currently in medical scrubs - as the resources needed to make him a new suit of power armor were incredibly difficult to come by on Ancient Terra, and he had yet to gain the trust of the older brothers and cousins to earn any pieces of armor that might be handed down to hi-
Wait a fucking minute!
Cedric stared silently as he had finally registered the fact that the Marine in front of him, holding a small human child hostage was a fucking World Eater.
The World Eater was a huge fucker too. Covered in jagged spikes and horns, likely fused to his armor. There were symbols of chaos carved into his pauldrons and cuirass. Cedric's eyes darted around the examination room - there was fuck-all he could use as an effective weapon against a Khornate Chaos Marine, especially with no fucking armor or real weapons of his own, but without armor, Cedric should be much faster than this demon-empowered, traitor. How the Fuck had he even gotten this far into the clinic? Or had the Chaos Marine used the miserable and sniffling human child as leverage against the Ultramarine who was manning the front desk, keeping the schedules and appointments in order? Oh. Oh fuck the chaotic traitor is talking. What is he saying? Cedric should probably be paying attention to the fucker.
"-nd that's when the sickness started. His parents say that it's just a common cold, but he's gotten those before. He's not been this sick for more than a couple of days. I'm worried that he's gotten something more serious. Look him over... Pease. He's my bonded and... I want to be sure that he lives as long as possible. Baseline humans live for such short periods of time..." The World Eater huffed, holding the tiny human close to his chest, surprisingly making sure not to spear the poor boy on his spikes.
What... What Chaos-fueled trickery was this? If Cedric's ears weren't deceiving him, this Traitor was genuinely concerned about the human child in his arms. And given the utter devastation his legion in particular was notorious for on formerly peaceful imperial worlds - the vicious bloodshed as they drowned whole systems in tides of blood for their false god, this felt like some sort of sick and twisted cosmic joke. Cedric counted to ten in his head as he took in a deep breath and let it out before responding through clenched teeth, aiming to keep his voice calm "When did his more serious symptoms manifest? What is the child's name? I'm not sure I caught it. Does he understand Gothic, or should I get an interpreter so he can participate in his healthcare? I am... Learning the local languages, but I have only been on Ancient Terra for... I believe the term is a month and a half."
"My name is Andrew, doctor. I do understand these words, a bit. But I speak-" The child explained, before breaking off into one of the local languages, speaking faster than Cedric could parse through, especially when trying very hard not to descend into a furious whirlwind of fists and holy wrath when faced by a Chaotic Traitor. "- much better, sir."
"Well, the first thing I need to do is give you a full examination, to check you over. Then, I'm going to use this needle to draw some -" Would the word blood push the Khornate Fucker into a frenzy? Cedric did not know and had no desire to risk the child's safety "-vital fluids, for some tests. Those tests will take about an hour, and hopefully we'll be able to figure out what's going on."
"Will the needle hurt?" Andrew asked, huge brown eyes wet with tears, fearful.
"It will hurt, but only a little, like pinching your finger." Cedric answered truthfully. He was pretty sure that the sight of fresh blood would send the Khornate Fucker into a frenzy. He'd rather avoid that if at all possible so he asks, internally gagging on how polite he has to be to a filthy traitor. His teeth were still clenched as he requests "Please set Andrew down... Older Cousin. He will need privacy as I check him over and draw a sample of his vital fluids. Please wait outside the room, ideally in the waiting room-" His eyes flicked over the other's armor, trying to figure out if the other had some sort of rank to refer to him as "... Sergeant." God-emperor forgive him, but he is trying to get this child to safety. He is going to hit the safety alarm soon, too.
Benji clearly did not like his suggestion, and looked down at the tiny human in his arms "... Are you sure that I can't stay with him? Even if I set him down on the exam table and promise not to interfere with you checking him over?"
Were he not a Treacherous Chaotic Bastard, such a compromise would be fine. But Cedric wanted him out of the room. Out of the clinic, and ideally back to whatever demon-infested pit he had crawled out of. He bit the inside of his cheek, hard. Until he could taste the metallic tang of blood in his mouth "Check-ups are done with the most amount of privacy possible. Unless Andrew asks you to stay, I am asking you to leave, per the local laws we're to abide by."
"... Fine. But if you hurt my bonded, there is nothing that will stop me from getting vengeance. If there is so much as a hair out of place... Your comeuppance will be brutal. your pleas for mercy will -" The Khornate Bastard began to threaten.
Cedric closed his eyes for a moment, taking in another deep breath, trying to shove the fury at the insult that he would be the one to harm the child of the two of them threatened to crack his composure as he interrupted the posturing Traitor "The only harm done to him will be a small prick of the needle, which is necessary for the tests that need to be run. Apart from that, I have taken oaths not to harm patients unless absolutely necessary, and on Ancient Terra, I have yet to need to give a patient the Emperor's Final Mercy, and I doubt that this patient will need such. Leave. Please."
"... Fine. I'll wait in the holding room. But -" Benji breaks off into one of the local languages, clearly telling the young baseline human something. Cedric wished he knew what the fucker was saying, but the older marine was speaking far too rapidly for him to begin to guess. Once he finished giving instructions to the child he continued "I am one shout of his away and I will break your spine if you hurt him more than absolutely necessary. Understood?"
Cedric swallowed down the challenging words that were on the tip of his tongue. Now was not the time to get into a brawl with a Chaotic Traitor. Not when he was so close to separating the two of them and being able to check to see if the child was willingly with this fucker (and thus Chaos Tainted, or at least blind to the dangers) or if he was being held hostage. "You need not threaten me, sergeant. I am not the threat to this child."
"Good." With that, the Khornate bastard finally, finally left the room, closing the door behind him with a loud bang. Cedric counted to ten ins his head before raising the room's internal shielding and kneeling down, so as to be as close to the child's level as possible. He gently held the young boy's hands as gently as he could "Listen to me. You understand, yes?"
Andrew nodded, a confused expression on his face "Yes. I understand."
"Okay, so I activated a shield that means that he can't hear us talking, so please speak truthfully. Did he kidnap you? Is he holding you against your will?" Cedric asked, doing his best to keep his voice calm and soothing "My older brothers and I can help you, if that's true. Or if he's threatening your family, so that you behave."
Andrew looked startled and confused. He shook his head "No! No, nothing like that. Benji's safe, I promise! He's very nice to me an' my family! I know he looks really mean and scary,, but he really is nice. He growls 'cause he cares."
Poor child. So young, and already tainted or at least blinded by Chaos. But it was his duty to tend to anyone who walked into the clinic, no matter their allegiance, so long as they didn't try to attack anyone inside the clinic. "Alright. If that answer changes, please come see me. My name is Cedric, and I'll help you as best I can. Now, let's see what illness is making you all sneezy and feverish, hmm?"
"Okay!" Andrew responded, smiling adorably up at him.
Cedric couldn't help but return the smile as he narrated what he was going to do next during his exam of the young human - patiently answering the questions he had, and letting him look over the instruments he was using in order to complete the check-up, as he'd been instructed to. Pediatric care was not something he'd been taught before he'd come to Ancient Terra.
~
The next several patients were adult humans. Two had work-related injuries that he helped to set initially, before giving them the paperwork they needed in order to start the process, suggesting that they speak with one of the medically-inclined Ultramarines at the front desk in case they needed help filling out the paperwork, or were confused about certain aspects of that process as it wasn't something that Cedric himself really understood. The other three adults had bad sunburns from a recent trip to the beach and an improper application of sunscreen schedule. he prescribed them burn ointments and sent them on their way.
He had just finished the write-up on the last patient he'd seen and had signaled to the front desk people that he was ready for another patient when a flirty voice called out "Oh my, well hello doctor. Aren't you a handsome, big man."
Cedric froze for a moment before spinning on his heel, shifting into a combat stance on instinct, his eyes narrowing as he spotted a fucking Emperor's Child leering up at him, his armor painted the bright and gaudy purple. The Chaos bastard's green stretched far too widely across his face and Cedric felt unclean at the way that the other was leering at him.
There was nothing visibly wrong with this... This affront to the god-emperor other than being a Chaotic Traitor, from what Cedric could see. He did not have a human with him. H could see something dripping from the other's claws, and given his last encounter with Slaaneshi-scum had ended with the death of one of his squad-mates, Cedric felt that it was entirely prudent for him to slam shoulder-first into the Emperor's Child, knocking the other off of his feet. He then pinned the pathetic excuse for a marine with one foot planted on the other's back, his gloved hands reaching for the nearest empty jar and a roll of tape. "Stay down, you Slaaneshi bastard! I don't know what nefarious fuckery has brought you here, but I will not have your poisoned touch corrupt the innocent souls here."
"Excuse me?! I came here because my -" The Emperor's Child spluttered.
Cedric shoved a stress ball in the bastard's lying mouth. It would do little to keep him quiet for more than a moment or two, but the silence was blessed "I don't care what lies you told the others to get in here, but know this, Slaaneshi whore, I will not let you corrupt the people here. I know damn well the literal poison that drips from your clawed hands, and the devastation it can bring. If you truly mean no harm, then stop struggling!"
Surprisingly enough, the Chaos bastard did, in fact, stop trying to squirm out from where Cedric had him pinned. Not that the young Black Templar trusted his apparent compliance as he finished taping empty jars to both of the Slaaneshi bastard's still-dripping hands. He called over the vox unit that he'd been given "We need a full biohazard clean up. There's Slaaneshi poison dripped all over the floor and God Emperor knows how much he's dripped all over the fucking city. I don't think that it's a contact poison, but if it finds it's way into an open orifice or wound we're going to have problems. I've got the fucker who's secreting it contained for now, but we're going to need somewhere better to keep him... Unless we can banish him back to The Eye?"
One of the Salamander Apothecaries who was working next to Cedric's assigned exam room came sprinting out, a confused looking elderly human and their Dark Angel companion peering through the door behind him. The Dark Angel immediately picked up the human and shuffled deeper into the exam room- smart.
"Cedric... Young one, you wanna explain why you've got an unresisting Marine in a headlock and jars taped to his hands? I know he's a Chaos Marine, but we've told you that things are... Different here on Ancient Terra. The Chaos Marines don't feel the pull of their false gods nearly as keenly here as they do where we are from. What do you mean by poison?"
"The substance that he is secreting out of his claws, it's one of the six most potent Slaaneshi poisons. If I am not mistaken, it's the Poison of Vainglory." Cedric explained, still keeping the Chaos Marine in place. He was trying not to think of why this particular fucker wasn't resisting the choke-hold, because Slaaneshi. He gives a quick run-down on what happens when someone is afflicted with the poison of Vainglory, voice cracking a little as he tries not to think of how one of his squad mates had nearly been corrupted beyond the Emperor's Light because of it. He finished with a miserable "As far as I know, there are no known antidotes or cures to any of the poisons. Allegedly there are certain kinds of witchery that can slow down the onset of symptoms... But once the vines begin to manifest, the afflicted being is beyond the Emperor's Light and is damned to be consumed upon death by the ruinous powers as their body twists into a horrible plant-homunculus that seeks to infect as many as possible with the poison. Which is why I taped jars to his hands - they are leaking the poison and while the poison can be cleansed in holy fire, I figured that the less of it is around to be cleansed, the better."
"Did you... Perhaps... Ask if he could stop dripping poison everywhere?" The Salamander asked, his voice gentle.
"... No? Why would he seek to do anything other than inflict his patron's wretched curse upon the innocent, and upon those of us who are loyal to the Emperor?" Cedric asked, blinking in confusion at the older apothecary. This was a Chaos Space Marine after all. Misery, cruelty and suffering was what they tried to spread to everyone they could get their corrupted hands on. Everyone knew that.
"That's not... I came here looking for help not to be judged by a Big Baby Boy! You are very mouthy for a Son of Dorn, aren't you?" The Slaaneshi Scum spluttered in his arms.
Cedric tightened his grip, and put more of his weight on the older Marine "Still your tongue, traitor!"
"What help were you seeking?" The Salamander asked, looking genuinely concerned. Soft hearted bastard was going to get all of them killed. "Cedric, put him down. I know it goes against your training as a Black Templar to release a Chaos Marine you've gotten your hands on, but as we've told you earlier, things are very different here. I'll take over handling him. "
Cedric hesitated, torn between the clear and present danger that the Emperor's Child posed, and obeying a direct order from a superior who clearly had more experience in handling Chaos Marines in this context. "Sir?"
"My claws just started dripping this poison this morning and couldn't get it to sto-how in the fuck did you get a Black Templar in the city? I'm surprised he hasn't murdered half the humans already for heretical beliefs!" The Slaaneshi Fucker sputtered, his eyes going wide - all six of them.
"He's an Apothecary. And he's very recently appeared on Ancient Terra, and until you spooked the hell out of him, he's been adjusting fairly well." The Salamander responded, before looking directly at Cedric. "Put the Emperor's child down. Right now. I want you to go to Chapter Master Mirros and tell him what you just told me about Slaaneshi poison. That's not something I've heard of before, and will definitely be of interest to him. You've done very well. Come on now, lad. Ptu down the heretic. If he tries anything funny, I do have my flamer handy and you said that fire works to counter the poison?"
Cedric nodded, and glowered again at the Slaaneshi traitor "Yes sir, fire works very well against Slaaneshi poisons. And that which creates them." With that he lowered the Emperor's Child into the salamander's hands, before stalking off to go find Chapter Master Mirros.

for the record I AM at the timeskip now and. the fun thing about one piece is the world is so BIG that I can absolutely get away with my one piece AU taking place during canon and having just never crossed paths with it (pending the devil fruit I accidentally predicted I may have to change whichever one that is to keep to the rule of ‘only one devil fruit of any given power exists at a time’). so now I’m like… trying to imagine what my AU cast would think of the summit war, man. the entire world hears of it, after all.
do you think bigb or pearl lost anyone in the battle at marineford? they wouldn’t have time to mourn, not much; with the chaos that erupts thanks to whitebeard’s death, they have their hands full almost immediately trying to keep order on a seas filled with pirates trying to fill that vacuum. they’re both promoted; somehow, Pearl tells bigb quietly, it doesn’t feel earned at all. bigb wants to say that’s for the best, but it’s not, not with the list of names they aren’t allowed to tell anyone so the world government can claim the victory was more of a rout than it was. it’s a sudden, grim reminder of why they do this in the first place; it’s a sudden, grim reminder of the corruption and power that works against their ideals as well.
do you think the ties and clocker pirates find each other again? safety in numbers; if the marines can end the age of such mighty pirates, they’re in danger from them just as much as other pirates, and besides, etho and cleo may not be the world’s most notorious pirates, but they’ve been at this for a long time and made some enemies they’ve outlasted and outsmarted. the breakout at impel down is unlikely to have any of those enemies, right, but—well, just for a bit they’ll be one crew again, just in case. (now, if only their crews could stop fighting about the name. no, the letters don’t make a good acronym, stop trying!)
the unlucky pirates—sorry, sorry, the bad boy pirates—miss the news for multiple islands, because they think they’re too cool to keep up with the newspaper. it’s only after some unusually impassioned attempts to kidnap and/or kill jimmy that they realize something’s… changed. and it’s only stopped on an island where they have a chance to breathe that joel spots the news in the headlines and realizes why.
martyn looks at jinbe in the news and raises an eyebrow. well. he’s still helping humans, but at least he’s no longer a government dog. next to him, scott wonders what will happen at home now that whitebeard can no longer claim fishman island is under his protection from pirates. but—well, neither of them have been home in a long time. they’ll figure it out.
and for a moment, everything seems to hold strangely still for the whole world.
then they just—
move on.
they have their own lives to lead after all. and they may be changed, but they still have their own things to do.

Could you write a sickfic type thing about Luffy where like the marines or someone uses kairouseki against him in a way that just wipes him out for a while Nd the crew looks after him??? much love <3
x
Sea stone bullets are a cause for concern, but not as much of one as a person might think. Nami’s captain has always been unsettlingly perceptive when it suits him, since well before any of them had any idea what observation haki was. He knows when a bullet is coming that he can’t bounce away.
It doesn’t do him any good to know sometimes, though. Not when he disregards the warning of danger on purpose.
And there was really nothing else he could have done in this case, Nami is reluctant to admit even to herself, because if he had dodged, Chopper would have been shot in the back of the head. Luffy had, to his credit, thought to deflect the tiny missile with armament, but it only caused the glass casing to shatter and the substance inside to spill free. A few drops against his skin was all it took.
He dropped like a stone.
Usopp lunged in at the last second and caught him before he hit the deck. But then they all had to watch Luffy’s head loll, limp and unresisting. It was horrifying. It happened so fast. Despite everything Nami had seen up to this point, she had never been more afraid than in that moment.
“What is that?” Zoro bites out, an arm spread to the side to keep his nakama from getting too close to the spill.
It shimmered eerily in the late afternoon light, the sky overcast but still just bright enough for Robin to grow an expendable hand near the mess and pinch a bit of it in the corner of the picnic blanket they had all been lounging on all of ten minutes ago. She ground it between her fingers, protected by the blanket, to feel the texture. Within moments, understanding touched her face.
“Infused with sea stone,” she said.
Chopper squirmed between his nakama’s bigger bodies, shouting, “Take him to the infirmary!”
Usopp was off like a shot, Luffy in his arms, Chopper right on his heels. Sanji joined Robin and Zoro at the starboard side of the ship, staring out at the remaining warships with the same look of murder in their eyes. Franky was already at the helm, and Sunny was turning in the water to face the Marines; the cannon mouth hidden in the figurehead opening to rain destruction. Brook was laughing, high-pitched and chilling, in a way that surely carried across the distance between themselves and the unlucky bastards who thought a cheap ambush would be enough to net the Straw Hats’ collective bounty.
“A squall is coming,” Nami said, feeling the shift of the weather in her bones. “Destroy the ships but leave the soldiers alive. They’re so eager to play with sea stone—let’s give them a taste of how it feels to drown.”
“Fitting,” Jimbei rumbled. He was the most honorable person Nami had ever met, but just like the rest of them, all bets were off and morals thrown aside when it came to anyone who would try to rip Luffy away.
By the time revenge had been swiftly doled out, and Brook’s violin easily covered the sounds of the Marines in the water, Usopp reappeared on the deck to say, “He’s okay.”
Nami’s heart still didn’t settle, not until she had bullied her way into the infirmary, planted herself on the side of the bed, and held her captain’s face in her hands to see for herself.
“He’ll sleep for awhile, probably,” Chopper said. “Until that compound works its way through his system. There isn’t a counter-agent for sea stone—” yet, the glint in his eye suggests “—but it only weakens Fruit users, it doesn’t kill them outright. If it were a bullet lodged in his body, maybe ultimately it would fester and poison him, but this is just a trace. It’s like, um…like a sedative!”
“Maybe we should keep some on hand for when he’s being annoying,” Sanji said dispassionately, as if his hands weren’t trembling around the cigarette he was trying to light.
Someone nudged Nami’s shoulder. She glanced up, and Zoro said, “Storm.”
“Right,” Nami remembered. “We need to get Sunny prepared.”
She was reluctant to leave Luffy, but he trusted her to lead them safely through troubled waters, so that much she had to do. Brushing her thumb over the scar under his eye, she eased her hands away then stood up and started barking orders.
It took some effort, but Sunny danced through the wind and rain like it was all play, and hours later they came out the other side unscathed. There was a small island ahead of them, a crescent moon curve of pink sand and tropical flowers and a dilapidated, long-forgotten pier. The New World being what it was, Nami didn’t trust the peaceful picture for a goddamn second, but it would be a convenient place to moor for the time being.
Besides, Luffy would whine if they started an adventure without him.
He missed dinner and slept through the night. Sanji is prickly and short-tempered at breakfast the next morning, crafting fluffy omelets and frying potatoes and chainsmoking angrily out the window. But his entire attitude shifts when familiar voices outside bicker their way toward the dining hall, and the galley door bursts open to reveal a wobbly-looking Luffy, an irritated Chopper, and Brook, who continues serenading their journey with a tiny ukulele.
“SANJI!” Luffy calls across the room. “Feed me or I’ll die right now!”
“No you’ll die ‘cause I killed you for leaving before I said you could!” Chopper snaps.
“He’s already here,” Sanji says, across the room in seconds and frogmarching his captain to a seat at the table. “Might as well eat.”
“Lu, how are you feeling?” Usopp demands, leaning across the table eagerly and nearly sticking his elbow in the butter dish. “You look like shit.”
“Mean!” Luffy says.
“Accurate,” Nami butts in. She takes him by the chin, turning his face towards her. His brown skin has an unhealthy pallor, lethargy clinging to him despite his animated good cheer. He looks like any other flu-ridden teenager. As she studies him, he wrinkles his nose and sticks his tongue out. “Brat,” she scolds without heat, releasing him.
It’s such a relief just to have him at the breakfast table. Franky starts in on a wild story about the storm Luffy missed, and Robin discreetly pushes the platter of brown sugar glazed ham closer to his plate. The morning sun, pouring through the window, suddenly seems warmer and brighter than it did moments ago.
Still, Chopper is right. Luffy, force of nature that he is, starts to flag almost immediately following the meal. The burst of energy deserts him quietly. Nami only notices by chance, on her way toward the garden with Usopp. She casts her gaze out over the deck as she crosses it, and pauses mid-step.
Zoro is sitting back against the side of the ship the way he always does when he’s trying to catch a few extra minutes of rest, the brim of a worn straw hat tipped over his face to shade it from the sun. Nothing about that stands out.
But his strong arms are curled comfortably around Luffy, who naps sprawled against his first mate like a clumsily-thrown blanket, slack face pillowed on Zoro’s shoulder.
“Luffy’s sleeping?” Usopp says, a bit too loud in his shock. “He just woke up.”
“Chopper did say it would be a few days before that shit was out of his system,” Franky pipes up. “Poor bro must really be feeling it.”
“I told him to stay in bed,” Chopper gripes irritably. By now most of the crew has gathered, a combination of mirth, curiosity and lingering concern preoccupying their thoughts, and Nami watches Chopper cross the grassy deck and tug lightly on Zoro’s sleeve. “Hey, hey. Will you take him to the infirmary, please?”
Zoro opens his eye, a sharper gray than any blade, but never cutting when he looks at his family. After a second, he closes it again.
“Nah.”
Zoro may be a shithead at times to Sanji and Nami and Franky and—okay, most people—but all of his younger crewmates tend to get an automatic pass. Nami honestly can’t think of a time he looked at Chopper and said “nah” about anything that didn’t involve his own health. From the baffled look on Chopper’s face, neither can he.
“Huh?? Why not?”
“We’re sleeping.”
“And he can sleep in the medbay!” Chopper insists.
Zoro scoffs and moves his captain closer.
“Go get your own.”
Chopper gapes wordlessly. All the rest of Nami’s nakama have a similar expression on their faces, something between stupefied and offended—save Robin, who presses a secret smile behind her hand, and Jimbei, whose rumbling chuckle is just barely audible over the sound of the sea.
Nami—who knows very well what Zoro looks like when he’s trying to get a rise out of someone, who knows very well that she has a claim on Luffy that only a handful of other people in the world share, one that can never be broken or stolen or changed—feels herself bristle, too.
“HE IS OUR OWN!” the majority of one of the most infamous pirate crews in the New World shriek like schoolchildren.
Luffy’s eyes drift open in the chaos that follows, squinting through the haze until he can bring the faces of his nakama into focus. They’re all so lively, shouting and arguing about something, their ship the brightest, busiest thing under the whole sky. The sun touches his skin, warm and laughing, like it’s trying to tell him a joke.
It’s so comfy. Soon he’ll get up and shout with them, and eat some more, and fish and play and plot a new adventure. But first he’ll dream a little while longer. He knows his friends won’t mind.

I feel like if the Roger pirates ever celebrated birthdays they would forget buggy's at least once.
Hey Anon? Why???
This was the first thing I read upon waking up, and I did not need a broken heart this early in the morning. Damn!
Okay, but in all honesty, thank you so much for this. I always get so excited when people chose to share their thoughts with me 💙 Even if they break my heart! (Also, to be fair, I am a sucker for sad headcanons like this, so you don't have to hesitate when you want to share more of them!)
But now back to the subject of your message.
Firstly, yes!, I do believe that something like this could have happened. And it probably was under very unlucky circumstances. Buggy strikes me as the person who (at least as a child) would excitedly remind everyone that his birthday is coming up. But maybe that year something kept him from doing so. Maybe that year, the Roger Pirates found themselves in one bad situation after the other during the days leading up to the 8th of August. They got into multiple storms, were attacked by other pirates, hunted by marines etc. So truly there wasn't any time for Buggy to remind everyone (not that it should be a child's responsibility to remind their caretakers that it's their birthday) and with everything happening it slipped peoples minds.
Now the question, how can we make this even worse? The answer, let's include Shanks. So, the day of his birthday, Buggy wakes up and even he himself needs a few moments to recognize what day it is. But when he does, he gets super excited because he loves birthdays. Shanks doesn't say anything, which is weird, because Shanks is always almost as excited about Buggy's birthday as about his own.
But then Rayleigh doesn't say anything about it, and neither does Roger or anyone else on the crew. Buggy doesn't want to believe that they have forgotten, so he keeps asking subtle questions to random crew members about the significance of the day. And some of them are acting super weird and dodgy. So Buggy figures, all right, they are throwing him a surprise party. Which almost makes up for the crappy start to the day he had.
When night falls, Buggy ends up being right. There is a surprise party. Except, it's not for him. Turns out, during the fight the day before, Shanks finally managed to control his Haki and Roger has decided that that was an occasion that needed to be celebrated.
Buggy can't believe it and runs from the room, because he doesn't want to have a breakdown in front of all of them. The rest of the crew thinks that Buggy is jealous, because Shanks get recognition for his fighting, so for most of the night they let him hide wherever he ran off to.
Buggy spends the last few hours of his birthday curled up in the farthest corner of the storage room, behind some crates, sobbing his tiny heart out. Until, a few minutes to midnight, Rayleigh finally shows up. He asks if Buggy is truly this jealous, that he doesn't even want to spend a few moments up with the celebrating crew. And at first Buggy doesn't want to tell him, because he hates being seen as a little kid (even though he is) and surely nobody else would through a fit just because the crew forgot which day it was. But finally he breaks, and he just mutters that it's the 8th of August, and it still takes a few second for Rayleigh to understand what he means by that. But when he does, he feels incredibly bad. Because he just knows that this wouldn't have happened if it was Shanks in Buggy's place. Of course, he apologizes and he and the rest of the crew try to make up for it the next day, but you know … what's done is done. Ah yes! Pain in the morning. Don't we just love it??

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
there was a story that you heard from your mother. there used to be another deity apart from eywa, a darker being. that eywa created everyone with four arms, four legs and two heads. That it was the happiest the na'vi had ever been. The darker being, abaraxas, it was called, was jealous. So, he split them apart. The split apart Na'vi were supposed to spend their lifetime with their other half, your soulmate. That you were supposed to spend your life searching for your other half. The lucky ones found theirs, and the unlucky ones didn't.
loving ao'nung was like riding a small dingy raft in the sea. Some days, everything's calm and sweet, the waves lapping softly at your feet, and others, you were stuck in the biggest waves you've ever seen, things going up and down but in the end, you stayed on the raft.
That day, while you rode on your skimwing beside him, your eyes couldn't help getting drawn back to him over and over again, watching how he smirked to himself and how his tail swished back and forth behind him. As if he knew you were watching him.
You really wondered where he was taking you, what he wanted to show you and why today. It was around dusk and you watched the sun set, casting him in the pretty light, watching his arm muscles flex as he held onto his ilu.
After awhile, he seems to catch you watching him, and throws a mischievous grin towards you, making you flush a deeper blue. his ilu begins to slow down, and you stop as well. You drag your eyes away from him and finally seem to notice your surroundings. He's brought you to a small island, the prettiest you've ever seen. Teeming with tropical life, and the reefs before it are filled to the brim with marine life. Two different ecosystems seeming to collaborate and strive together. He pushes himself off his ilu, and helps you down from your skimwing. The touch is electrifying, and it's everything in your power that you do to stop yourself from reacting obviously to it.
He seems to feel it too, but you tell yourself you're probably overreacting. you both wade through the water to get closer to the small island, you giggling when all the marine animals seem to follow you, and a couple of hammerbrow fish brush against your thighs, making you laugh at the ticklish sensation.
you see Ao'nung's smile out of the corner of your eye and you flush, pretending not to see it. He leads the way through the beach, through the jungle while animals all stop and watch you move. He notices this and laughs.
"what's so funny?" you ask, wondering what's made him laugh and look so happy.
he smiles, "you, you really have a funny connection with all animals." pointing out your special connection with eywa.
"i guess." You respond, not really knowing what you were expected to say. But you love the way his dimples show when he smiles, so you don't really care.
you follow him in silence while he finds his way through the island. the entire time, your head is racing with thoughts. Where is he taking you? Should you say something, or should you stay quiet? you don't know but after awhile of internal debate, you speak.
"so, how'd you find this place?" you say, out of curiosity and half out of the need to say something to fill the silence.
he hums, seeming to think. "a couple years back i was in a hunt by myself and i got tired and i needed a break and i found this place."
"why'd you want to show it to me?" you ask, hoping he's about to confess his undying love and devotion to you. 'don't think that, that's so stupid' you chastise yourself
he looks away. you stare at him confused. Finally, he responds with "i thought you'd like it, since there's so much unbothered nature here."
the small part of you that just thought he was about to confess his love for you swoons. It seems to say 'see! i told you he was in love with us.' you sigh internally and push that small part of you away.
"that's sweet, thanks." you say, looking around more and noticing how crazy this place is, with so much life surrounding you, you can feel it humming in your veins.
he looks away, seemingly indifferent to your words. He mutters something under your breath that you don't quite catch, but you don't push him.
ao'nung stops at a small log on a small hill, and once again, you need to drag your eyes away from him to catch what he wants to show you.
you let out a soft gasp, at the prettiest sight you've ever seen. The sun's setting rays are shining on the water, the green flushed forest is reflecting the light back, and everything just seems so perfect and unbelievable you genuinely ask yourself 'have i died?'
"wow, ao'nung, it's beautiful" you say smiling softly.
"it is, isn't it?" he responds, looking away and turning to you.
'this is it' you think, 'maybe i should give him the necklace now.' you thumb the little pouch at your waist, giving it a little more thought, and you think 'hell, what's the worst thing that can happen?' (worst idea of ur life )
(play if hanahaki was real (only if u want) )
you decide to push forward and hand it to him anyway, and you clear your throat.
"um, Ao'nung?" you ask, hesitantly
he hums in response
"here" you say, handing him the necklace. You finished it earlier in the day, and so it's quite good timing you think.
"what's this for?" He takes it from your hands and inspects the beads.
"well, it was kind of a token of appreciation, but at the same time, it's a way of me telling you i like you. hopefully you like me too?" you say, with bated breath for his response.
he doesn't respond immediately, but your heart in your chest is thumping wildly, thoughts rushing through your head, your tail swishing anxiously from side to side.
you're praying that everything you thought could mean that he liked you too, was actually real, and not something you've imagined all this time, so lost inside your daydream, that you confused reality with fiction.
finally, he looks back up at you, your heart soaring, before you finally process the look on his face. Eyebrows pinched tight, his lips in a thin line, and he speaks, he finally speaks.
"is there something wrong with you? what would make you think that i liked you too, that i wish to be your mate? you, a outsider in your own skin? someone who couldn't even swim? a demon child?" he smiles cruelly, and you feel tears prick at your eyes. You don't know why he's being so mean, couldn't he just have said that he didn't feel the same?
with those words, he throws the necklace you spent countless hours on for him, on the ground, stepping on it violently, crushing it with his feet.
with that, you can feel your heart shatter, and you feel a scream building up in your throat. You don't want to give him the satisfaction of seeing you cry, so you whistle, calling for avarin, your toruk. She was always following you, to make sure you were okay. she instantly swooped down, and you jumped onto her back, flying away.
'faster' you urge her, wishing to get away as fast as you can. she listens, and with a flap of her powerful wings, you fly through the air.
unbeknownst to you, ao'nung watches you fly away with a sad look in his eyes, hating that he had to do that, for the sake of his clan.
once the island is out of your sight, you let out the most guttural scream you've ever heard into the sky. Tears are streaming down your face, but there's nothing you can do.
'what did i tell you?' another small part of you says 'he'd never like you. you're a demon child, remember? half avatar.' you know to never listen to that voice. that is the voice that was made to keep people humble, to destroy them. thinking of it would only weaken you, you reminded yourself.
everything onwards passed on in a blur, suddenly you were back in your marui pod, your brothers standing around you, asking you questions that you couldn't quite hear.
at this moment, the story of soulmates came rushing back to you, as you walked further into your pod, thinking; 'i don't have a soulmate, do i?'
unknown to you, your brothers throw each other worried looks, especially when you don't respond, or even lean down to pet Ta'heyla when you see her.
"y/n?" they say, neteyam and lo'ak asking after you. this time, you finally hear them
"i'm fine" you respond, and everyone knows you're lying. Lo'ak immediately knows what happened, especially from the way you're walking, somehow. Something about younger brothers.
he runs to T'sireya, who immediately searches for her brother. he's nowhere to be found, but hours later, when you're curled up in your hammock facing away from everyone else, refusing to eat, he finally comes back.
she yells and yells at him "what is wrong with you! you hurt Y/N, why'd you lead her on like that?" , he doesn't even try to argue back, the only thought running in his head, 'i wish it didn't have to be this way.'

Augmen de Lute info!
Augmen de Lute is the confident, charming, laid-back captain of the Arrowpoint Pirates, a group that enjoys throwing massive parties for any occasion. Other pirates and seafarers are encouraged to join in the fun- provided they follow the rules and not cause trouble.
To fund these parties, Augmen attacks Marines and merchant ships, as well as stealing from any guests who decide to break his rules or other pirates who attack. He loves attacking any Marine ships on sight, racking up quite the bounty from property damage alone.
Augmen's parties aren't traps like some other locations (Gran Tesoro), he genuinely likes throwing parties and is very serious about hospitality. He's built up a good reputation among other pirates over the years and they know his ship's a good place to visit. Some unlucky pirates think they can take advantage of the captain's generous hospitality, wanting to steal Augmen's vast treasure or kill him for the fame, those pirates rarely make it off the ship alive.
Augmen has a large crew of loyal pirates (mostly just basic pirates, no special powers) who all love and adore their captain. He in turn, loves his crew and treats them well. He may be a partier but he works hard to keep his ship running smoothly and keeps his crew and guests safe.

Devil Fruit: Mod Mod Fruit
Able to modify (strengthen or weaken) attributes of people and objects through touch.
If holding the target, the effect is stronger, the effect can last when the touch is gone but will start to fade after a few minutes. The longer something is held, the stronger the effect and the longer it will linger after the contact is gone.
Uses his left hand to strengthen and his right to weaken, this is entirely a stylistic choice by him and if needed he can use either hand.
Use Examples
Augmen’s dual pistols, powers them up so they’re a LOT stronger than a normal gun of that size, since they’re always on him, he’s always feeding a little power into it, keeping them stronger than if they were held suddenly
He does a similar thing with the cannons on his ship, feeding power into them so they hit harder than normal cannons, capable of taking down Marine ships in just a hit or two
Strengthen the ship’s defenses, cannon balls do less damage or bounce off entirely. Helpful since Augmen’s ship is a bit slow due to its size
Can buff himself and others attack/defense
Can weaken opponents if he gets they’re hands on them, for most people, they’ll feel weak and tired and if held on to long enough, pass out. Stronger opponents get their attacks debuffed and devil fruit users can have varying effects.
Doesn’t work well/at all on certain devil fruit users, specifically ones that can avoid being touched or ones that can’t really have their powers weakened
His power being touch-based means that he has to get up close to opponents to affect them, making him easier to hit in return. If he’s focusing on powering up/weakening a large target, he can’t power up himself, also making him vulnerable.
Example: powering up the entire ship makes him an easy target to be sniped or hit, relies on his crew to protect him

Flickerbeat: Prologue
Note: there are some things referred to in the prologue that you won’t know (mostly the names of guns in the future). Those will be accompanied by illustrations in the final novel.
Tumblr media
The stargazer fish is an interesting little guy. One wouldn’t necessarily call them physically beautiful like some of their other fish friends, with two bulbous eyes on top of their heads and the complexion of mottled mold. They’re an ambush fish, meaning they hide on the ocean floor, watching their prey. Poisoned spines are their weapon, but there’s another interesting aspect of the nightmarish fish. It has organs in its head capable of producing up to fifty volts of electricity, making it a deadly predator.
In the Philippine Sea, in the year 2052, there was more than one type of stargazer. While the fish hid in the dark depths of a black sea, the U.S.S. Pensacola cut through the surface, churning water and sea foam in its wake. It was an aircraft carrier, one that held over four-thousand Navy and Marine Corps personnel, and that was powered by a shoddy nuclear reactor that could go at any moment (at least that’s what engineers had been saying for the past five years… and yet she was afloat). The Pensacola had been assigned to watch for enemy activity in the area, the enemy being the Armed Forces of the Philippines. Following the second Korean War, in which the North Korean regime was dismantled, it was believed that many of the country’s weapon supply caches were moved to allied nations, hidden from the hands of the United States government. Since then, a silent war had been raging between East and West, one made up of subtle threats and espionage. That was the Pensacola’s assignment. Survey the area for enemy activity.
Of the personnel on board, most were asleep in their racks, the sheets stiff and mattress thin. After a day on board, the scratchy cloth-covered rack felt like a cloud of heavenly comfort.
However, not everyone was resting peacefully. On the flight deck, standing in the midst of the salty sea air, were a dozen sailors and their leader, one of five Force Reconnaissance Marines on board, a tall and intimidating man that went by the callsign ‘Jaws’. The sailors were performing maintenance on an experimental aircraft, the latest attempt by the U.S. military to create a combat-ready stealth jet. Meanwhile, Jaws was peering through a pair of night vision spectacles, head on a constant swivel as he watched for movement on the horizon, an XRS-52 in hand and loaded.
However, it was below deck, in the Hangar Bay - a large room with only two walls, the other two open to the night air - that the second type of stargazer could be found.
Scarlet Adams, callsign ‘Stargazer’.
Another one of the unlucky few on the night shift, she too had watch orders, her main focus being unidentified vessels. She was to look over the dark ocean, watching for any potential enemy ships coming within range of the Pensacola. This wasn’t her first time, having stood in the exact spot nearly a dozen times since leaving Amnia Bay, and it wasn’t that bad of an assignment. At this hour, the Hangar was quiet, leaving the slosh of the ocean’s wake to fill her ears. Various aircraft and a few gray shipping containers filled the otherwise empty space, the normally white fluorescent lights replaced by dim red ones.
Scarlet leaned against the frame of an open wall, though it wasn’t the sea that she was watching. It was the stars, vibrant this far out from the light pollution of civilization. Prior to joining the Corps, Scarlet had studied astronomy, igniting her passion for the celestial cosmos. She intended to further pursue her studies, but… well, the Butterfly Effect cut her time in academia short.
The catalyst was a simple request: to borrow a pen. It had been the beginning of her fourth year astronomy course, stuffed in a musty class room twelve other students. The walls had been covered in maps of the stars, with dusty bookshelves lining the bottom. If Scarlet focused hard enough, she could still smell that room, even nearly two years later.
She had been focusing on an assignment, diligently preparing it to be turned in, blocking out all other sights and sounds. It was a tap on her shoulder that gained her attention, and she quickly turned to see a familiar face. Jack Halifax, a transfer student from across the country. He had only been at the university for a few weeks, and seemed to be the ‘class clown’ type. The professor would often bring up a Holo-Graphic of the stars, using a laser pointer to circle each cluster he was speaking about. When this happened, Jack would take out his own laser pointer, and discreetly use it to mess with the professor. It was funny in a way, but always annoyed Scarlet to know end.
“Can I borrow a pen?” he had whispered, holding his up to show the clearly empty ink cell.
Scarlet, being ever prepared, reached into her bag and gave him a new one, not thinking much of it. He thanked her, and returned to the assignment.
When class had finished, Jack returned the pen with a small piece of paper wrapped around it. All it said was ‘Dinner?’ with a phone number below it. Call her sappy, but Scarlet fell for it, deciding to give this guy a chance. What could go wrong, after all?
One date turned to two, then two to four, and, before they knew it, the two had fallen head-over-heels for one another. It was a love that tamed Jack, yet freed Scarlet, opening her up to adventures she never fathomed. They were seemingly inseparable, a bonded pair that clung to one another.
So, when Jack expressed interest in joining the Marine Corps, Scarlet found herself eager to go with him. Not as a military wife, but as a fellow Marine, one that no longer feared her own death, but the death of her lover. She knew the pain of being alone all too well, having never known her father, while her mother died in a car crash when Scarlet was young. She’d been alone most of her life, and it had felt normal. Now that she had experienced the warm of Jack’s presence, the thought of reliving that emptiness sickened her. So, when Jack went to the recruitment center, Scarlet tagged along. By the end, they both had a one way ticket to Officer Candidate School.
During their training, it was determined by higher ranking officers that both would excellent candidates for Force Reconnaissance, having a knack for gathering information and being talented marksman. When offered the chance to take the Basic Reconnaissance Course and attend Marine Special Operations School, Jack accepted without hesitation. Scarlet, on the other hand, was apprehensive, having hoped to become a pilot instead. However, it was the excitement she saw glinting in Jack’s eyes that convinced her to join him once more.
Prior to the second Korean War, call signs were mainly used for aviators. However, following the capture, extortion, and subsequent execution of Reconnaissance officers by North Korea in 2038, it was determined that call signs were necessary for anyone serving with a secret security clearance. The enemy couldn’t know who was working Recon if their names weren’t used, and that was who they targeted to most.
Scarlet gave Jack his call sign — ‘Jackalope’, a nickname she’d given him back in college. Because of her astronomy degree, and her affinity for gazing up at the night sky during drills, she was dubbed ‘Stargazer’.
In the quiet Hangar, Scarlet was doing much the same, this time admiring the Orion constellation. If she had been performing her duties, she might’ve seen the silhouette sneaking up behind her, each step deliberate, planned. Instead, she was startled out of her thoughts when two hands gently slid around her waist, giving her a soft squeeze.
“Hey, lil’ Stargazer,” the voice of Jack whispered in her ear, breath hot and smelling of stale coffee.
Scarlet relaxed, leaning back against the man who held her, a content smile gracing her lips.
“You’re supposed to be on watch,” she said, though her tone had no malice, but rather a slight laugh.
“So are you,” Jack countered, his lips moving down, skirting the skin of her neck.
“I am!”
Jack pulled Scarlet in closer, resting his chin on her shoulder. His presence was more soothing to her than the stars.
“Sure you are,” he muttered knowingly, kissing behind her ear, “which one were you looking at?”
He knew her too well, aware of her tendency to focus on a particular star rather than the cluster that the sky offered.
“Meissa,” she responded, “it’s bright tonight.”
“Show it to me,” he whispered with a tone that sent goosebumps rising across Scarlet’s skin.
“You, uh, you know where it is. Professor Weldon covered that.”
“Mm, you know I never paid attention,” Jack said, his fingertips caressing her waist, “my eyes were always on something else…”
Scarlet could feel herself melting in Jack’s arms, this kind of physical touch having been foreign to her prior to their relationship. Her heart was beating a little faster.
Raising her hand up, she pointed to the sky.
“Well… well, you see Orion’s Belt?”
Jack made a sound of affirmation, his eyes following where Scarlet pointed. She moved her hand up further, tracing the invisible lines of the constellation.
“Go up on either side… those two stars are Betelgeuse and Bellatrix…”
“Mmhm,” Jack mumbled, kissing her neck.
“You’re not even looking,” Scarlet said, quietly gasping when she felt a gentle bite on the sensitive skin of her throat.
“Of course I am… keep going.”
Scarlet hesitated, savoring the slight sting from his teeth.
“And then… then the one above them, in the middle… that’s Meissa.”
Jack hummed, nodding, “Almost as brilliant as you.”
Scarlet felt her face begin to heat up, a light pink hue filling them. Her lips twisted into a lovestruck smile. Twisting in his arms, she turned to face Jack, finding her look mirrored back. She cupped his cheeks, reaching up to gently kiss him. Soft lips caressed her own, reciprocating the love received.
As the kiss broke, Scarlet sighed in content. She had never felt as safe as she did with him. There was never any pretending, no fear of judgement, just… acceptance, something she had yearned for, something she had never experienced. She was accustomed to being the outcast, the last chosen in gym class, the only one without a valentine. Alone. She had always been alone.
It was then that a twinge of sadness tugged at her heart, a common occurrence since joining the Marines. One that Jack was familiar with, easily recognizing the shift in her demeanor.
“In your head again?” he asked, knowing her all too well.
She nodded, a slight sting burning her eyes. Without another word, Jack pulled Scarlet into a tight embrace, rubbing her back as he held her.
“Three more years,” he said, “then it’s you and me.”
“I know,” Scarlet whispered, burying her face in his chest.
The truth was, Scarlet didn’t want to be a Marine. She wanted to be with Jack, by his side wherever he went. She wanted a quiet home and an average life. Simplicity, comfort, and the knowledge that Jack, too, was happy and safe. That’s what she wanted, not watching for the enemy through the darkness of night, or traveling the oceans on a dying ship. She wanted peace. As she stood there in Jack’s arms, eyes closed, she could almost feel it.
It didn’t last long, as Scarlet suddenly registered a low buzz. Her face scrunched as she listened to it, trying to separate the crashing waves from the sound. It was becoming louder, almost like a bee buzzing near her ear. Lifting her head from Jack’s chest, she looked at him in confusion. From the look on his face, she could tell he heard the same sound.
“What is that?” Scarlet asked, turning to look out over the dark sea.
A loud rumble shook the ship, causing Scarlet to grab ahold of the wall’s edge. It was accompanied by squealing and incoherent shouts from the flight deck.
Scarlet looked to Jack, both of them wide-eyed.
“The reactor,” she muttered.
Springing into action, Scarlet ran towards the hatch, prepared to wake the crew for evacuation. She was stopped when Jack caught her by the wrist. Looking back at him, she was prepared to rip her arm away. That changed when she saw the grave expression painted across his face.
With a grim tone, Jack spoke, “That wasn’t the reactor.”
———
Atop the flight deck, a strange aircraft was powering down. It was as big as a cargo plane, yet built like a stealth fighter jet, sleek in its design. The sailors gathered around the back of the craft, where the only obvious exit was. Jaws was on pointe, aiming his rifle at the cargo hold. There were no identifiable markings on the aircraft, but it clearly did not belong on board.
Suddenly, the latch released, and the hold’s door slowly began to open. Jaws’ grip tightened, the full force of his focus on whoever was trespassing. However, as the door lowered, no discernible figures could be made out. Instead, they saw that the interior was unlit, whatever or whoever was inside hidden by the shadows.
Jaws, not known for his patience, grit his teeth and shouted, “This is a United States Naval vessel! State your intentions!”
Silence. The sailors started to shift, looking at each other nervously, their hands clamming up around their rifles.
Then, out of the darkness came a spark, and a small flame illuminated a black gloved hand.
“Intentions,” Jaws shouted, growing more enraged by the moment.
The hand lifted the flame, bringing it up to the tip of a cigarette. Beyond that, the sailors and Jaws could make out a pair of chapped lips, and two circular lenses above, barely reflecting the flickering fire.
———
Scarlet and Jack remained silent, the buzz having stopped after the ship shook. They stared at each other, frozen in place, unsure of what to do. If it *had* been the reactor, alarms should be going off, signaling an evacuation and imminent rescue from other vessels in the area. However, the only sound either could hear was the gentle lapping of waves against the ship.
That quickly changed as gunfire rang out, accompanied by shouts and screams of agony.
“Shit, get the rest of Recon up,” Scarlet said, an edge of panic to her voice.
She sprinted to where her rifle laid, near a hatch that led up to the flight deck. Picking up her weapon, she was about to pull open the hatch, when she suddenly stopped.
Jack was about twenty feet behind her, watching in confusion as she pressed her ear to the door.
“Scarlet? What —“
Scarlet shushed him. There was a consistent *thud, thud, thud* going down the ladder, getting louder as it came closer. It sounded similar to a ball rolling down a set of stairs. Then, there was a heavy *clunk* as it hit the hatch.
Silence.
*Beep.*
Suddenly, a small explosion split open the hatch, sending Scarlet flying backwards with the force. A chunk of metal slammed against her head, leaving a deep gash that ran across her cheek, blood spilling from the wound. She went limp.
“Scarlet,” Jack shouted, running to where her body laid. He knelt down, panic rushing through him as he searched for her pulse. Relief ran through him as he found the rhythmic beat, and saw her fading in and out of consciousness, but it was short lived as a new sound came from the smokey ladderwell. It was the sound of footsteps, slow and deliberate.
Grabbing the collar of Scarlet’s uniform, Jack began to drag her to the port-side opening. He kept looking to the exposed ladderwell, watching as a pair of legs came into view. With each step, more of the person was revealed. It was someone in a black combat uniform, holding a white DE-52. As they reached the last step, Jack could see a cigarette hanging from the person’s lips, the rest of their face covered by a matte black mask. It was smooth, featureless, except for two black lenses over the eyes.
Reaching the opening, Jack quickly took off his dog tags, putting them around Scarlet’s neck. He had a dreadful feeling he knew how this would end.
*Bang!*
A fiery pain radiated through Jack’s shoulder, a bullet cracking the bone. It went through to the other side, hitting the wall and leaving a small dent. Blood quickly soaked his uniform, tacky and thick. The wound left him weak, though his determination to give Scarlet a shot at survival made him push through the searing pain.
As the masked man approached, Jack gave one final shove, rolling Scarlet’s body over the side of the ship. He watched as she landed in the water, crashing through the inky black sea. Jack never considered himself a religious man, but in that moment, he prayed for her rescue.
———
Just below the surface, Scarlet could barely see the Pensacola through her blurred vision. A black tunnel was beginning to surround her vision, but she could make out moving blobs above her. She heard the muffled sound of gunfire, along with the sight of a quick, bright flash. One of the blobs fell on the extended Hangar Bay deck, barely visible at the edge.
Then, black.

(Not a request, just rambling here :’D)
Brain rot says:
What if reader were to get kidnapped.
Some poor, unlucky soul (maybe someone from the Yiga Clan) somehow slips past the chain’s defenses and bam! Manages to snatch reader away. He thinks “hah, this will lure in Link and we’ll finally end his life” and reader is like “I don’t think that’s gonna work-“
“Why not?”
“Well, cuz it’s not just one... it’s eleven...”
Cue, poor bastard looks up and sees 11 absolutely feral Links ready to m u r d e r
(“No wait hold on we can talk about it-“)
Cuz i just wanna see them react (who’d lose it, who’s trying to think things through and make a plan but is shaking w anger and so-) to reader being taken and how they’d react when reader is finally safe and back w them (who’d cry or hug reader so hard it almost hurts or who’d immediately cover them in kisses to reassure himself that they actually got reader back)
-🌱
🌱anon!
Poor Yiga ;-; Not really though. Like that had to either be some expert level planning on their part OR Hylia blessed them with ulta-good luck just to see how it would play out.
FBOBFF READER JUST STRAIGHT UP-
(Picture if you will,
"I only count ten?-"
Sage just fucking comes out of nowhere, tackling whichever Yiga is closest.)
Time is a planner at heart. He gets so scarily quiet that the others have no choice but to just stand and listen when he does speak. And when he does it's a succint and well thought out plan that doesn't leave room for survivors. And when Reader is back in their arms? He's doubling patrols, circling the Reader when they travel, there is no window of opportunity for it to happen again.
Wars is another planner. But he's almost frantic about it. Like, in his Hyrule, he's always on a time limit. So in this, he's on an even bigger time limit to get Reader back. He's pressuring himself to make their time apart as small as possible. And when Reader is back, he's vigilant in watching over them. Constantly. They very rarely ever leave his sight (even when they think they do).
Sky probably panics at first, just a bit. But the panic doesn't last long before it's turning into a bloodthirsty rage. He did in fact kill a God. He has that anger within him. Now imagine what he would do to a few measly Yiga. And he's never letting go of Reader. He's holding them to his chest at every given opportunity, clinging to them.
Legend knows what he wants to do the second the news spreads to him. He's ready to leave and damn near does, if not for Twilight. But he's a silent, and deadly type of dangerous. They probably don't even see him coming before he's taking them out. He's a lot like Wars in the sense that he doesn't let them out of his sight afterwards. Ever. Marin left him once and he will not let Reader do the same.
Hyrule is the one who's panicking. Of course, he probably has some form of fairy magic that can track Reader down, he's probably more worried about them getting hurt or sick or dying. Are they cold? Are they hungry? He should've been there. If he had only been better this wouldn't have happened. He's constantly checking over the Reader the second they're back, making sure they never stray far and that he's always within arm's reach.
Four is planning as well. Only his are so...violent that even the rest of the chain have to be like '...Dude.' He's erratic and best and downright versatile. He can't settle, every color flipping through his head over and over, screaming at him to do this or do that. He's also the type to scold Reader, out of love of course, and demand they stick close to one of them at All times.
Twilight is trying to keep the chain together. They are falling apart at the seams and he's desperately trying to hold them together because he knows that it's his best chance at getting them back. But you better believe he is just as angry, just as vicious, just as blood thirsty as they are. Wolfie becomes a staple after the fact because wolfie can get away with tearing into someone's gullet right then and there. Twilight...Not so much.
Wind is Freaking Out. That's his nibling/parent/idk you pick! And they're just...gone? He's running around, demanding they jump into action, and yelling threats when they aren't moving fast enough for his liking. Much like Sky, he is all over Reader when they're returned. Him and Sky probably get into a fight fifbnf
Wild uses his Sheikah sensor. It can track things he takes pictures of, and you know that he has pictures of Reader. He's also ripping, ready to go, just barely remaining there-- only being pinned by Twilight's gaze on him. And when they're back? He's making them whatever comfort food they wish and is practically at their beck and call. whatever they need and he is all too happy to get it for them.
Cal is internally panicking. On the outside, he still has that flat, stone faced look, but he's ready to fucking cry. He misses Reader so much. And is wiling to do anything to get them back. And when they are? Congrats! You've just got a new, full time body guard! He's your new shadow. There anytime you need it. <3
Sage is gone. The second the news spreads, he's gone. He's leaving. He's on the hunt. Out of all of them, he's the most dangerous in that moment. You can't hurt him when he's like that. He has one train of thought and nothing is stopping him. He's not like the others in the sense that when Reader is back, he's not immediately all over them. He needs to cool down. However, late at night? He's crawling into Reader's bed mat and wrapping his arms around them, kissing their neck and promising that it would never happen again.

After I bingewatched Markiplier's Subnautica let's play I made ANOTHER bot with my favorite war criminals, this time Ghost was the ai voice assistant, based on the real person, and Soap was a marine biologist who got very unlucky.
The funniest thing was when they found the remainings of the spacecraft, full of androids, and Soap insisted on taking one with them. Computer wife Ghost got all naggy and was making comments on "how outdated the software of this android is" and how he is much better than a doll with wires, but when was asked if he is jealous or not said that he "cannot possess human feelings", which sounds pretty bs but who am I to judge
And poor android who was yanked out of the water and put under mandatory virus scanning was sitting in the corner blinking like a newborn lamb, poor thing love him will name him Bob
Overall pretty funny, might end up writing that thing down

What space marine husbandry do you have to share about my favorite chapter, the lamenters.
Lamenters are friendly, affectionatr, and the safest of all the Sanguinius-line breeds to own. Unfortunately, most owners genuinely do not deserve them, as they tend to get blamed for things the have no control over, due to the rumor that they're "unlucky". Lamenters are the most likely to be returned to a shelter after adoption. But there are a few genuinely good organizations that specialize in caring for and rehoming them
