I have this theory, that the first ship you get REALLY into preps your expectations for future ships and how they're going to be handled.

For example, if your first "big ship" was Johnlock (poor thing), then you probably don't expect any of your ships to become canon. Two men could literally kiss on screen (ineffable, I know), and you'll still expect them to go through separation and pain the next season, and you're not even sure they'll end up together. You've seen something you thought would be "obviously canon", and were betrayed the worst possible way. You still have trust issues.

Meanwhile, if your first ship was Destiel, you are DETERMINED. No matter how unlikely, or how long it takes, you'd still believe in your ship. It can become canon, you just know it. But you don't trust how the writers will handle it. It will be canon, but... At what cost? You're prepared to choose a fanfic to replace canon in your mind, and to make usage of a generous dose of headcanon.

All this to say that my first ship was Tomitch, or two obscure comedy characters from an obscure french YouTube office comedy show, in an era where homophobia was EXTREMELY rampant in those spheres. I did not believe it would become canon for a SECOND. By season two, they were both engaged to their girlfriends.

Then, season three happened. And the comedy show became increasingly serious, with some drama sprinkled in. And by the end of it, not only is your ship CANON, but they're literally the prophesied lovers from a weird alien cult, and one of the girlfriends comes out as Aro/Ace (kinda, she doesn't outright say it like that).

So yeah.

That's where the bar is.

Have you ever noticed that the most popular ships you can find for a fandom on tumblr are queer ones which aren't canon (at least yet)?

Here are a few examples:

- Merlin and Arthur from BBC's Merlin

- Steve and Eddie from Stranger Things

- Wednesday Addams and Enid from Wednesday

Here are my takes on them:

- Merthur had much more chemistry than Gwen and Arthur so like this show was already not accurate to the legends and historical events they could and should have taken it a step further. In my headcanon Arthur is bi and Merlin is either bi or gay

- I love both of them, I love their individual relationships with Dustin and I think they have chemistry, especially compared to Nancy x Steve (also not a fan of the Nancy-Steve-Jonathan love triangle). The concept of Eddie x Steve would be interesting and fun and funny. They could be such a good couple. In my headcanon Eddie is pan and Steve is bi. Btw in denial that Eddie is really dead.

- I think they have the best developed relationship of those in the show. They are a whole vibe. I liked Tyler as a love interest up until the monster reveal or the foreshadowing of it cause he seemed to get how to treat Wednesday well but I think Enid does too, a little different though and a bit more bumpy but she's more than just on her way. I don't like Xavier as a character I think he's a bit annoying and doesn't seem to understand that Wednesday isn't at all interested in him romantically. I also don't think the guy Enid has a crush on suits her, he is kinda boring and they don't really have chemistry. So that's why I ship them. In my headcanon both Wednesday and Enid are either pan or bi.

no offence but the reason tumblr is “dying” is, well, yes, of course the cursed like/reblog ratio and the change in user behaviour (because of people being used to how instagram and tiktok work) BUT also the lack of weekly shows. i say it with my whole chest, they don't produce captivating and engaging stupid weekly tv shows anymore because streaming killed that so you have spikes of activity here when Something happens in general fandom or up to three days after a new season of whatever drops and then it's a wasteland. this is obviously an old woman yelling at a cloud missing supernatural and the vampire diaries and pretty little liars and all these other shows type of post but honestly give me back weekly tv shows where i have something to watch for 40 minutes almost every day of the week after work so then i can read and reblog it on tumblr give it back for the sake of my sanity
