Malia is trying to be nice, but she’s not good at it. She doesn’t really remember how to be. The Remake got rid of the puncture wounds in her thigh where the bear trap got her, smoothed out her hair until it was no longer matted to her head, scrubbed her skin raw and clean, but it couldn’t fix the way she didn’t feel right in her body anymore. She became something else, in there, something wild and terrified. Somewhere in that arena, Malia forgot how to be human. Now she’s just an animal in a girl’s skin. Empathy is a lot to ask for from something like her.

(Malia is the youngest victor in Hunger Games history. Now she has to live with it.)

“What kind of powers?” Max asks warily, exchanging glances with El, Mike, and Will.

Allison sighs and Klaus exclaims, “Yay! Quick rundown 2.0!” He offers jazz hands to accompany his statement, earning an eye roll from Diego.

“Guess so,” Five says, clapping his hands and giving a tight lipped grin.

OR

The six Hargreeves siblings, plus Lila, land in Hawkins, Indiana circa 1986. Seven extraordinary time-traveling superheroes stuck in an ordinary place, an ordinary time. Except, it isn’t anywhere near ordinary. It might be the only place on the timeline that can hold a candle to their Hargreeves family flavor of chaos. There might even be a bit of their own history buried in the place, if they can manage to survive long enough to dig it up.

When Max finds seven strangers in her back yard, looking as out of place as El had when she’d showed up, the redhead knows there’s more to them than meets the eye. As a new threat begins to unveil itself, the Hawkins crew begins to see the strangers’ arrival means more than anyone could have realized.

Maybe a controversial take, but I think that a lot of the TUA fandom would be happier if we stopped trying to compare The Umbrella Academy to S.tran.ger Th.ings in terms of how much more attention ST gets. I know it’s frustrating when our favorite show doesn’t get the same amount of time, funding, or advertising, but it’s important to look at things from a business perspective.

According to Netflix, Stra.nger Thin.gs has been continually on the global Top 10 list since mid-May, and it's still going strong. It's also the second show in Netflix's history to surpass a billion hours viewed. They know that ST is their cash cow, it consistently has the most viewers, sells the most merch, and it is by far one of their most popular shows. Whether we like it or not, though The Umbrella Academy has done well to keep up, it just doesn't pull those kinds of numbers and its fandom is pretty small by comparison, which is completely understandable. ST thrives on nostalgia and in general is the type of story that more people are into. Meanwhile, TUA is kinda weird, kinda offbeat, kinda juvenile, and its target audience is much smaller than ST which draws horror fans, suspense fans, DnD fans, '80s kids, '80s parents, teens, etc. etc. You know what I'm getting at. ST is just way more relatable and interesting to a broader variety of people, and it many ways, that makes it a very "safe" show. So it's not entirely honest to diss ST like it's a competitor because, although there is some genre crossover, TUA and ST are two completely different pieces of entertainment that appeal to two completely different ranges of audience. It's all apples and oranges at this point.

That isn't to say that we're failing, though, or that TUA is being swept under the rug. Considering the size of the TUA fandom and the show's global popularity (or lack thereof, when comparing it to Netflix's bigger shows), I'd say we actually get a fair amount of extra content and merch. Cool promo photoshoots, figures, shirts, replica uniforms, a spin-off comic for Klaus, BTS stuff including a "making of" book, convention panels, interviews, soundtracks (including vinyl!), quite a lot of activity on Twitter and Instagram from the official accounts, and now a blooper reel... It always stuns me when I see people say we don't get anything when we've always been decently fed for a smaller community.

I'm not saying that it's not okay to be annoyed, emotions are emotions and I get the frustration, but I think we should also try to appreciate the stuff that we do get. It's easy to feel like our fandom is bigger than what it is if we always surround ourselves with other fans, but we really are quite small. I don't know anyone outside of online spaces that watches The Umbrella Academy, and the ones who tried, didn't like it and stopped before finishing S1. That's not any fault of Netflix "not caring" (TUA would be canceled by now if that were true), or that Netflix "cares more" about ST (there's really no "caring" about anything but sales in the big business side of entertainment), it's simply that one is more interesting to more people. For us TUA fans, it sucks, but that's just how it is in a slightly more niche fandom. And that's okay!

Most importantly I think we should remind ourselves that despite whether or not things could have been better with more funding or popularity, we are getting a proper ending for the series. Blackman has, to my knowledge, planned on ending the show at four seasons for a while now. This is a good thing! The show gets to end on its own terms and the writers have a chance to tie up its story rather than milking it for seasons only to be canceled without a proper conclusion or, worse, suffering season rot. Best of all, we also know that Blackman has always been intent on working closely with Gerard Way and is keen on ensuring that the show's end won't be a disservice to the source material. So whatever we get, we can rest assured that it will likely be the best translation of Way's vision for the TUA universe. Not many shows get this kind of luxury, and I feel pretty grateful for that.

I think we're alright, and we're gonna continue to be alright.

I'm in the middle of watching S3 of umbrella academy with my dad (slow going he keeps on falling asleep) and it made me think of a fic idea I've had rotting around in my brain for awhile. Like it would be a crossover- because who doesn't like a crossover-with Stranger Things. It'd pick up after S1 of TUA so instead of getting stuck in Dallas they'd get stuck in Hawkins. But like starting before S1 of ST like 1981 or something.

Allison would get there first, she'd be around for S1, Viktor would connect with El in S2 so instead of Sissy it's Becky. (I've got a whole thing planned there with 8's crew and powers and stuff.)

Diego would be mentioned briefly, my plan is to put him with Murray bc you cannot tell me they wouldn't be conspiracy theory buddies. (He'd take more center stage in S4 with the Cali crew.)

Klaus (and Ben) would be S3 bc hello? a mall with Russians and drugs, and honestly just the chaos that would happen. Also Robin there so he could like have some heart to heart with her or something touching like that.

Then S4 would have Luther and Five would arrive at the end of the season continuing his whole 'stopping world ending events' thing.

I just idk I had to get it out. I wrote down ideas in a notebook y'all, like 3 pages worth of stuff that could happen, it's just that 4 seasons is a lot to cover and how??? the hell??? would I do that???

Have you seen stranger things? Because literally all I can think about is a stranger things umbrella academy crossover

I may or may not have bingewatched the entire new season yesterday (the scoops troop has all my uwus I thought there was going to be forced romance but instead there was canon LGBT+ rep #bless) but you’re very valid but there are many ways to do a crossover!!

Like a general crossover where both shows are still separate and, for example, when Five jumps he accidentally brings his siblings to the past in Hawkins, Indiana where they have to deal with the general absolute nonsense that being in the town entails while probably being mistaken for escaped experiments by the party after calling Five by his name ? I can just picture the kids trying to catch Five or something to take to El because they assume he’s her brother or something goodness (and also this one would probably differ depending on whether the squad was deaged to thirteen again or stayed at 29)

or an integrated crossover where, after numbers one through seven left/were failures Reggie-Papa (as an integrated person? the same person?) and say he joined the government (or maybe always was?) and started experiments anew with ?? both kids they find and maybe the kids of the original 43? because Kali was what, number eight? and El is eleven so technically it could line up if you just bump Kali’s age up a tiny bit (from 25 to 29) and pretend El’s mum was much younger when she was born (and of course if you fudge up timelines a little bit, but that isn’t too difficult considering despite being ‘present day’ the Umbrella Academy universe’s tech is pretty on par with Hawkins era stuff) which would mean that El actually IS their little sister that none of them knew about (and presumably that they have three more on top of that that are who knows where)

wait in an integrated au maybe Five got stuck in the upside down instead of the apocalypse hello yes and maybe instead of the Commission and stuff and him jumping back, maybe Eleven pulls him out of the Upside Down or opens the door and Five decides to take his chances and jump through himself or something and because time works differently in the upside down that’s why he’s still a kid/his powers were goofed up over there idk i’m just kind of spitballing here tbh

Klaus, looking at a demodog or demogorgan or mindflayer or whatever: wow Ben you didn’t tell me your cousins were coming round to dinner

I genuinely can’t tell whether Five/some other Hargreeves would cheerfully allow the party into life threatening danger or try and keep them away from it because, to technical adults the party must seem awfully young but also they were superheroing and yeeting themselves (or rather, being yeeted by Reggie) into danger soooo

but if they did try protect the kids, also pointing at Nancy/Jonathan/Steve/Robin like “babies. you all are babies. children.” because the difference between 17/18 and 29 is a whole world tbh and then honestly Joyce and Hopper are looking at the Umbrella Academy like “y’all are too young for this as well idk why y’all are being hypocrites” because they’re both like,, in their forties and the umbrella academy are in their twenties (even if only barely)

and if you wanted to switch up the squad’s ages as well to make ‘em different and do away with the whole 43 children born randomly bit and fully graft the umbrella squad into the stranger things universe you could probably get away with that as well in which case I have no idea how old they would be tbh though presumably Five would stay physically thirteen (or ten depending if you wanted to go comics or show canon)

heck i dunno if you want to yeet me a more specific ask about a crossover I can probably spitball up an au for that but there are just too many possibilities to get into on a single post oops

(Steve is my fav stranger things character based solely on s2/s3 since i hated him s1 lmao but Robin has also clawed a space for herself in my heart what a blessed friendship,,,, I absolutely adored the new season up until the end which ripped my heart out :( i miss alexei)

a continuation of this post and within the same au. the one in which klaus hargreeves and billy are friends who share an apartment.

“she says steve’s a lovely man, by the way.”

billy pauses, hamburger in hand, the anticipation of that juicy first bite rapidly dwindling. “the fuck do you mean?”

klaus stuffs several fries into his mouth, talks around them like a true gentleman. “your mother. she’s a joy to be around.”

“don’t be an asshole,” billy says, stretching his leg just enough that the toe of his boot more than nudges a shin. “or sarcastic.”

klaus squeaks, looks away from billy over to the empty corner of the table that’s occupied by air.

or something else.

billy follows his gaze and sighs. “she’s here again, isn’t she?”

“yes, and she agrees with me that you have no manners.”

“funny. the two of you,” he starts, swinging a finger between klaus and well, an empty space, “have no room to judge. talking about me behind my back is a dick move, klaus.”

finally, finally he takes a bite of the burger he’s been craving all day now. long hours at the construction site afford little time for such pleasantries, but klaus had insisted just as much as billy’s stomach.

“anita,” klaus says once he’s unraveled his tongue from the plastic straw in his cup, “i have to say your son is quite humble and unwilling to take a compliment on behalf of his boyfriend, and that is clearly no fault of your own.”

klaus’ hand snakes across the table, resting on what billy presumes is his mother’s hand. shit like this is still weird to him, the fact that his friend can see people he can’t, and sometimes billy does question whether klaus is telling the truth, but it’s comforting nonetheless knowing a part of billy hasn’t entirely abandoned him.

“but he’s also stubborn as hell, and i take great pity on us all for that.”

rolling his eyes, billy continues to eat, ignoring the quick, shifty glances the waitress throws their way. klaus is a nut to most people, but billy smiles around a bite, and all is well again.

“this is the equivalent of her showing you my baby pictures,” he says eventually, wiping his fingers on a napkin because unlike klaus, billy doesn’t do destructive uncleanliness.

klaus grins, smug. “and there’s nothing you can do about it.”
