Long Term Love with Azumane Asahi

Pairing: Azumane Asahi/Trans Male reader Warnings: Mentions of Dysphoria, references to sex Summary: Despite growing up together, despite dating since before middle school started, despite everything really, sometimes how much Azumane loves you still catches you off guard.

You've spent your whole life with Asahi, or at least all of it that your remember, he's been your next door neighbor since elementary school and your boyfriend since the summer of your fifth year. Every major milestone has been spent together. Everything that there is to feel with another person has been felt, and still, despite it all, Asahi still sweeps you off your feet. Often without meaning to. He's always been bigger than you, and when you first met him it was terrifying. You thought he was older than you, and like most older kids, was going to terrorize you, but he didn't. And once you found the bravery to stop hiding behind your mother and talk with him things changed. You learned he was in your grade, although not your class, and you went to the same school. He sought you out after that. He'd never met someone with so many things different from him and he found you interesting. You balanced each other out, his calm and quiet eased your rough and tumble tendencies. Listening as you shouted your way through arguments you could have won if he hadn't pulled you away, letting you get the anger out before finishing your walk home.

You like to think you were the one that fell first, Asahi will argue this point until he's blue in the face, but privately, you're certain. It was when you were finally sure of yourself, when you knew you were a boy not a girl. When after months of fearing what he would say you bit the bullet and brought it up. He was confused and after a lengthy explanation on your end he only smiled. "It... I'm glad you told me, but it doesn't change things between us. I'll be by your side as long as you'll have me Y/N, that's what friends are for." He put an arm over your shoulder keeping you close, "And now we can get you on the boys team for real." You couldn't help the laugh that escaped you at that, because of course that would be his main concern, "I am perfectly content watching from the bleachers thanks."

Asahi is the one that confessed first, and even then it was more of him stating a thought than revealing anything. It just came out and it felt like the world froze for a moment. You could still remember what you were doing at the time. You were both in Asahi's room going over the pros and cons of different high schools and you had made a comment about how you could pull off the Karasuno boy's uniform and probably pass in it and how nice it would be to finally just be seen as you were without having to explain things. "You know you'd look good in anything right? You don't have to say you like the uniform just because I wanna go to school there. I would still love you just as much even if we went to different schools." He didn't look up from his brochure until after you'd been staring at him for quite a while. It was only after he caught your eye that he seemed to realize what he said. "You love me?" You echo, and he nods too embarrassed to speak and you grinned, "Oh thank god, because I've had a massive crush on you since middle school." He goes red and just laughs. Things don't change too much after that since you and Asahi where already pretty free with your affections.

It's your third year and Asahi has finally rejoined the team and you were back to sitting in the bleachers as you watched practice instead of avoiding the building all together. It was nice, even if the first years were a bit much. After they'd interrogated Asahi they had moved onto you. What position do you play? I don't. Then why are you here? To support my boyfriend, and the rest of the team. Why haven't we seen you around before? Because Asa just came back. It went on and on until the warm up whistle, and without a second thought Asahi kissed the top of your head and jogged off to meet the rest of the team. And you just stood there a little uselessly for a moment, overwhelmed with affection. Then its finals season and you can't remember the last time you slept. You had to study, you had to make sure Asahi studied because you were pretty sure Takeda wasn't kidding about barring anyone with failing marks from the away games and that would break Asahi all over again and you just got him back. And then there is a cup of green tea where your studying materials had just been. It snaps you back to yourself and you look up to see Asahi standing beside your desk with a smile. "Let's have some tea, stretch a little, and then come back to this." You agree, even though you know what is going to happen after you stretch is definitely not going to be studying, and sleep will follow soon after, and tomorrow you'll try again with similar results. Finals will go fine as they always do.

Then, they're standing on the top of the world and you couldn't be prouder. The bubble bursts of course when a reckless reporter refers to you as Asahi's girlfriend. It hasn't happened in years, but the offhand remark already has your skin feeling too tight. Everyone that needs to know does, and Asa had corrected the reporter with surprising sternness, but the damage had been done. But before you can retreat too far, there is Asahi. Bent to your level with a serious expression. "Don't mind her." He says, and you almost snap about how it's not that easy, "It's hard I know. But i am with you and I will remind you how ever many times it takes that you are the boy i have loved my whole life."

The thing about trans headcanons is that I always forget that that's a headcanon and get mad over a character being misgendered in canon.

I can't count the amount of times I got mad at Haikyuu characters for "forgetting" that Asahi is a trans woman before remembering that it's just my headcanon. I'm hopeless.

Angst with a happy ending

This may turn into a two/three part series

This is quite long so buckle up!

This is also set when the dorms were placed

Tw: Bullying, injuries and swearing

It all started when you were openly trans in UA, everyone was supportive or just couldn't give a shit about anyone's identity. Or so you thought.

There was this one group of kids in another class that would keep picking on you, first it was just the occasional teasing but when they realised you couldn't give a fuck, they got more serious.

Blood was pouring down your mouth and nose, as your bruised body lay in the hands of Iida and deku, running towards your classroom, shouting for aizawa or any teacher that was there. You laid there, barely able to stay conscious, unable to say anything from the lack of strength and energy you had in your bones, you wondered, what did you do so wrong to deserve this? As your mind slipped into unconscious, you heard very, very shallow footsteps coming towards you.

---Flashback to the day it started---

You were walking down the empty corridors of U.A, as the evening settled in, the sunset poured through the big glass windows, casting a warm and golden glow across the almost empty corridors.

Everything was peaceful until it got interrupted by some boys laughing down the corridor. You looked towards them to see 5 of the most disobedient and troublesome boys in the entire school.

Minato, he was their leader. Always intimidating people by his "awsome" quirk or stealing peoples phones or jewellery to keep for himself.

Haruki, he would manipulate people to think his actions were their fault and spread rumors about people and it would go around the whole school

Riku, he would mock people's physical appearances and call them names, which was detrimental to their mental health and harass and be violent towards his victims.

Asahi, he would force people to do bad things for him, stealing, bullying and giving him mercy ect. And he would always blame it on the victim

Then there was Kyou, he wouldn't do anything he would just stand behind the rest when doing there antics, everyone thought that he was forced into this and other thought that he wanted to be an actual hero but never knew how to become a proper one.

You snapped out of your thoughts and walked down through corridor, every step you took got faster and faster, when they passed you, they just looked at you and continued they're day. You sighed in relief as they passed you, unnoticed by the intimidating group.

Just as you thought you were free from them, Minato stopped in his tracks and turned around, you were a few feet away from them, keeping your distance and not turning back in case of any trouble.

"Hey you, turn around" Minato demanded, your heart sunk into your stomach as your heard his words, you turned around and looked at the group, staring you down like you were some sort of insane creature.

"Your that disgusting wanna-be-boy from class 1a aren't you" Minato laughed and all his friends chuckled in the background.

You huffed and started walking down the corridor again, knowing they were only going to continue throwing slurs at you for the evening.

"OI, WHERE DO YOU THINK YOUR GOING?!" Haruki shouted at you but you ignored them until your heard multiple running steps coming your way.

You felt a shot of adrenaline pump through your veins and you ran as fast as you could, you ran so fast that you felt your shoes getting hot. You bolted out of the school gates and quickly got your bike from the bike station and unlocked the lock with the key and quickly biked off into the distance.

Just then, the boys got to the exit but you were already gone

"Don't worry boys, we'll get em' tomorrow. Let's go." Minato told his friends and they went on.

As for you, you cycled all the way into your neighbourhood, you definitely got your cardio in for the day. Though all your thoughts were surrounded by Minato and his friends, all you had to do was avoid the kids, how hard could that be.

Luckily, your patents were supportive so you didn't have two problems on your hand.

The second you walked into U.A the next day you felt heavily on edge, like someone was watching you or observing you, though it was the early hours of 7:45 and class started at 8:25 so almost no-one would be here at this time.

Suddenly a hand was put on your shoulder and you zipped around in an instant, fear having the tightest grip on you, enclosing slowly but surely though when you turned you were only met with the worried look on Izuku's face.

"Hey Y/n, you look scared, what's up" Izuku asked worriedly as you relaxed under his touch.

"I'm fine Midoriya, I'm just a bit tense," You say as you turn to him and smile "what did you come and ask me for anyways" You say taking your bag off your back.

"Oh uhm its just that Iida saw you yesterday with Minato and his friends and we were wondering if you were hurt or anything" Midoriya asked quietly

"I'm fine really, I got away in time but no need to worry about me, I'll be fine. It was just a little dispute." You say knowing it was much more than that.

Midoriya grew skeptical by the second but let it go and said his goodbyes, you said you'd see him at the start off homeroom with the rest of the class.

You continued to get things out of your locker until another hand made its way onto your shoulder, you thought Midoriya or another one of your classmates wanted to ask you something but when you turned around you were with 5 boys surrounding you.

Without hesitation, Haruki forcefully seized your bag, flinging it aside, while Riku plucked your phone from your pocket, promptly passing it to Minato.

"Give it back, I'm not in the mood" You say, anger bubbling inside of you like a volcano ready to erupt.

"The freak isn't in the mood, just admit it, you're not a real man and you can have all your shitty stuff back." Minato challenged.

That did it, you grabbed Minato by the shirt and slammed him into the locker.

"I'm not fucking doing this shit today, give me my phone back and my stuff" You say, not up for the nonsense of the 5 boys.

"Alright, Alright. Boys give him back his stuff, here's your phone" He says while you let him down and he gives you back your phone and your bag is placed on the ground and they walk off like nothing even happened.

You were about to question it to yourself but then the bell went, you were going to be late for homeroom with Mr Aizawa

“Already it’s [difficult] for girls to get a place … But the ease with which these women’s universities are just allowing these men in is sickening,” Instead of pressuring men in suits to change Japanese society to be more accommodating to women men in dresses are pressuring women to accept men in one of the few spaces Japanese women had to themselves.

Female students at a women’s university in Japan are being asked to speak with “gender-specialist counselors” in order to convince them that men who identify as transgender are “female.”

Japan Women’s University (JWU) recently announced it would be adopting a self-identification policy that would allow men to apply for admission so long as they stated they were female. The policy will be implemented at the start of 2024, despite half of the female students currently enrolled expressing opposition or hesitation, as reported by the Asahi Shimbun.

In response to the female student’s concerns, JWU released a “Diversity Declaration” in June outlining that administrators intended to work towards convincing female students to change their views on gender ideology.

“Japan Women’s University has created an environment where ‘diversified women’ can learn together, such as formulating guidelines and manuals, assigning gender-specialized counselors, and setting up diversity weeks for students in order to accept ‘transgender women,'” reads the statement.

Satoko Oyama, a professor of social welfare at Japan Women’s University, along with her colleagues, instituted an in-house email hotline dedicated to promoting gender identity ideology. They also partnered with “gender-specialist counselors” to offer sessions to the women attending JWU. University officials have stated they intend to “dispel the anxiety of students,” according to media reports.

The testimony of an anonymous student, identified only as Y.M., is featured on the official JWU website. “I want to remember my privilege of being the majority,” writes Y.M.

“I think students at my university, being female, are the minority in this male-dominated society but are the majority when comparing ourselves to those who identify as transgender. That is, we can be both a minority and a majority depending on perspective,” she adds.

Minori Tokieda, a trans-identified male who heads the advocacy group Rainbow Tokyo Kita-ku, has campaigned extensively for women’s universities to admit men. At the beginning of the year, Tokieda presented a lecture on this topic at Tsuda Women’s University.

“An announcement by a women’s university that it will be accepting transgender students not only broadens the academic options for the target population but also sends out the heartening message that the university is their ally,” Tokieda said.

“This will also give an opportunity for non-transgender students to learn about diversity in their close surroundings,” he added.

Ochanomizu University, Japan’s first institution of higher education for women with a 142-year history, was also the first women’s university in Japan to announce that it would be admitting trans-identifying male students in 2018, with Nara Women’s University and Miyagi Gakuin Women’s University following suit. Earlier this year, Notre Dame Seishin University, which is also for women, said it would accept men who self-declare a female identity beginning in 2023.

Speaking to Reduxx, a Japanese women’s rights advocate who preferred to remain anonymous said the news “sickens” her.

“Already it’s [difficult] for girls to get a place … But the ease with which these women’s universities are just allowing these men in is sickening,” she says. “My daughter isn’t ready to apply for university yet – we are years away from that. But already I feel the tension … And now women will be fighting for even fewer spots at university. Because you can bet that in the next 10 years these women’s universities will admit more than just a few transgender applicants in their quest to look pious.”

The advocate also speculated that ‘positive discrimination’ may also be a factor with the admission of transgender applicants into women’s universities, with discrimination against female applicants being the norm in the Japanese higher education system.

Earlier this year, the revelation that mixed-sex universities in Japan were systematically lowering the entrance exam scores of female applicants in order to deny them admission sparked widespread controversy. Since the start of 2022, two Japanese universities have been ordered to pay restitution to female applicants for discrimination, and a third is currently in court proceedings.

In May, Juntendo University was ordered to pay out 8.05 million yen ($63,000 USD) in damages to 13 women after it was discovered they had been rigging entrance exam results in favor of male candidates. Months later, Tokyo Medical University was similarly forced to pay damagestotaling 18.26 million yen ($128,000 USD) to 27 women whose scores were lowered in order to place them behind male applicants.

St. Marianna University School of Medicine in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, is also currently involved in court proceedings brought by female applicants denied entry on the basis of their sex.

In 2018, the Japanese education ministry conducted an investigation after entrance exam score manipulation was first reported at Tokyo Medical University. According to their findings, nine medical schools in total had systematically lowered women’s entrance exams to favor male applicants and relatives of alumni.

The investigation found that after initial exam scores were lowered, at least 20 points were added to the scores for male applicants, and that similar entrance exam manipulations had occurred for years as universities sought to deny prospective female doctors. The justification argued that female doctors might choose to have children, and thereby shorten the length of their medical careers. The practice is believed to have begun as early as 2006 in some cases, and the government report referred to the rigging as “profound sexism.”

After the results of the government report were revealed, the gender equality minister at the time, Seiko Noda, told public broadcaster NHK: “It’s extremely disturbing if the university didn’t let women pass the exams because they think it’s difficult to work with female doctors.”

Following the international headlines on the blatant sex discrimination by top Japanese universities, The Washington Post reported on how enrollment of female students at elite academic institutions has been markedly unequal for the past two decades.

The institutional sex-based discrimination is so well-known in Japan, that there is a stereotype which suggests women who earn prestigious degrees will be unable to get married later in life. Prominent Japanese feminist Chizuko Ueno, a retired professor of gender studies, addressed the issue when speaking to freshman at Tokyo University in 2019. “Even before students enter the university, there is already hidden sexism,” Ms. Ueno said.

Dr. Caroline Norma, who lectures in the Master of Translating and Interpreting at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, spoke with Reduxx about the growing impact gender ideology is having on Japanese women’s already precarious situation.

Having written extensively on the issues impacting Japanese women, Dr. Norma said that recent efforts to coerce female students to accept trans-identified men in universities exemplify how the system has become “infected with gender identity propaganda from the West.” She specifically pointed to the humanities departments and the NGO sector as examples.

“Job opportunities for female university graduates are few, and some have picked up on the possibility of income generated through corporate ‘rainbow’ training. Most elite university campuses these days have an obligatory SOGI allies club, but most participants are aiming for jobs in the NGO sector,” she says.

Commenting on the deliberate denial of females into mixed-sex universities, Dr. Norma highlighted how profitable the medical industry is, and how women in Japan “are systematically shut out of opportunities” to earn an independent income.

“The same discrimination happens in corporate hiring processes, and top selective high schools operate ‘sex-equal’ intake policies when more girls ace their entrance exams. Now we have top women’s universities like Ochanomizu allowing male students self-identifying as women to enroll, even though such universities are elite, and so their admission means a young woman has lost a place,” Dr. Norma explained.

“Japanese women are forced to fight things like negative quotas operating for gender identity and male advancement in the absence of liberal values of women’s rights. Only 25% of Japan’s doctors are female, even though the medical system is filled with old female patients,” she says. “Birthing women are rarely given pain relief, and spycam incidents involving male doctors arise regularly in the news. But none of this is seen as reason to improve chances for women, and no particular nationwide policies are in place to reverse the situation of women in Japan.”

International rankings, including those from the World Economic Forum, consistently place Japan as one of the most unequal countries in the developed world in terms of political representation and economic opportunities for women.
