Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
So we're just supposed to let people die because some algorithm says that that's supposed to happen? You realize how messed up that sounds, right?

Spidey Gang X Hyper, chaotic reader who always needs saving
Gwen, Miles, Pavitr and Hobie x Harley Quinn/Gwenpool(inspired) GN!reader Platonic and general HCs for the whole group(together)
BIG warning: unfortunately, I have never read any Gwenpool or Harley Quinn comics! Most of the things I know about them are just from pinterest, so I'm sorry if this is totally inaccurate, the reader was mostly based on my own preferences either way, I just did this inspired by them because I saved some cute icons and fragments of comics on my board and they inspired me.
Other warnings: cussing? idk if I gotta put a warning for this, but yeah, very brief mention of wounds
A/N: I made this first one with all the characters together, but I'm making one with specific sections for each character, still platonic
edit: part. 2 here!
This is how I'm healing my inner child, sorry if it seems too childish

How they met you
When you were first introduced to the Spider Society by Jess and Miguel, let's just say it was hard to not notice you
You were so excited, asking them a hundread questions and talking so fast and loud, you caught many eyes just by stepping out of the elevator while rambling to them about how you had been dealing with this whole "Spider-Person" thing
You were so focused on your super interesting story(at least for you, it was!) that you didn't even notice how the four Spideys were staring at you - so curious and intrigued by this new recruit
The three boys somehow convinced Gwen to ask Jess later about who was the new Spidey that caught their eyes
For a while, they just keep an eye out at the HQ, trying to get a glimpse of you and find out more about this new recruit
Soon enough, you all get properly introduced for a mission together
Your excitement was totally contagious, and you were so friendly and fun that it was only a matter of time until you became friends
After that mission, they just decide to adopt you basically. You're part of the group now, no escape(and you were so happy about it)
How they are with you(general group HCs)
Whenever you see them at HQ, your first instinct to greet them is to run towards them and jump into their arms or on their back, and they always catch you(specially because of their Spider-Senses), usually spinning you around before letting go of you
You are a menace to Miguel - he totally hates you, specially when Hobie teams up with you to annoy the shit outta him. But you get the job done, one way or another, so he doesn't really have a reason to kick you out of the Society
And unfortunately for him, the five of you work really well in missions, so most of the time, you all get paired together
They're always giving you piggyback rides, not only because you think it's fun, but because that's how they make sure they know where you are and they keep you from running into more problems
You also get thrown over their shoulders more times than you can count - they always gotta drag you away from trouble because you do not know when to stop messing around
They got used to you always running into trouble, so now their protectiveness is almost intuitive
Like catching you right before you trip, without batting an eye
They're not even that surprised anymore when their Spider Sense alerts them that you're in danger during missions(or other occasions), they just rescue you right in time
You tend to get easily(but briefly) distracted during missions. There's always something colorful and sparkly catching your eye, or maybe something cute like a stray cat!
So you just have to stop for a second to pet it and take a picture with it, leading it away from danger until the others are yelling at you to focus on the mission
Or once, when the five of you were in a fight in your universe, and you ended up seeing a cute little kid with a costume just like your Spider-Suit. It was the first time you saw that. You couldn't resist it, you had to go talk to the kiddo(who could blame you, though? so cute!!)
It was adorable, but you quickly lead them away from the fight because everyone was yelling at you to focus on fighting the villain
Internally, they were melting over your cute interaction, but that should be gushed over later, when no one was trying to kill all of you
They had to make deals with you at some point, because Miguel was almost done with your shenanigans: if you didn't get distracted during important missions, they'd take you to your favorite burguer joint after, or let you plan a sleepover for the five of you, or play some game you'd been begging them to play with you... anything they could bribe you with, really
You couldn't refuse, the deals were always too good not to take. They'd accept any hang out ideas you had just because you focused on kicking the villain's ass and saving people?? Oh, you'll have so much fun planning these hang outs
Also, how do you manage to always eat or drink something during missions? No idea. But you do keep everyone fed by sharing your snacks, even when you're fighting some villain in another universe
That's only for snack though, they're actually the ones to make sure you have eaten enough meals, and not only candy and chips
You never mess up that badly during missions though, if there's something you're good at(besides being a menace and causing trouble) is kicking villain ass
You're always giggling and having fun while you're fighting them, and your Spidey friends always appreciated your excitement and playful energy
You insist on taking group selfies when the mission is over, usually with the villain tied up in a web-cocoon in the background, and they just go with it lol
They'd take turns on who would patch you up after you almost got your ass beaten during more demanding missions(not that they mind it, though, because they do love you)
You keep a collection of cute band-aids and first aid items, like Hello Kitty(my personal favorites) or other cartoon themed band-aids, and they always use those for you because they know you love them(and they find it adorable, too)
And you always make them laugh when you ramble about the mission or something cute that caugh your eye while they're taking care of your scratches and wounds
You thank them with friendly kisses on the cheek and tight hugs, which they love
Your 'thank you's were also taking care of their scratches when they got hurt as well, making sure to clean them properly(because you might be reckless but you don't want any of your friends to get sick or hurt even more) and treat their bruises gently
They really appreciate how calm and focused you are in those moments, showing just how much you care for them(even though they already knew)
During Miguel's meetings and 'lecture sessions', they had to be even more careful with you lmao
You were on thin ice with him, and being bored was not something you delt well with...
So they always have to find ways to distract you, or you and Miguel will start an argument and this will last hours
Sometimes, you do that job yourself. Distracting yourself by climbing on the walls, or sitting on the ceiling, spinning around in a rolling chair... you couldn't stay still for very long
Whether in a meeting or just hanging out, though, they're always amused by the way you're always climbing and sitting in unusual places
Or swinging upside down with your webs
Once you got stuck in your own spider web, they all laughed for a while before helping you get out of it lol
(Miles kept taking pictures of you just to tease you later)(he loves you tho)
You're always saying weird, conspiratory stuff they never understand, but it always gets a laugh out of them
Like those 3am "What if..." theories, or silly questions like "can worms have feelings?"
Or even weirder things when it comes to spiritual/universe/philosophical themes, "are you real? can you prove it to me? how can you be sure? how can I be sure?"
If they have time(like, not during a mission), they'll take some time to think about your questions and continue the topic lol
It's even funnier when Miguel is around, because he's trying to get you to listen to him but the five of you are just discussing whether or not someone can prove if they're real to someone else
It's just like that scene where he's like "no puedo más, no puedo más", hilarious

Woah, I must have missed something, why are people jumping down your throat?
From what I can gather at this point, it seems like they feel like anyone who likes Anne Rice herself and the books better than the show=automatically racist. Even if they ALSO enjoy the show and support the race change of the characters and all the racial conversation the show incorporated into its adaptation.
Personally, I think it does a disservice to the fandom to assume that the only reason one could like the books over the show is because of racist reasons. Anne's books speak to so many people in so many ways, especially those who have ever felt like outcasts or apart from mainstream society, and many fans have extremely personal connections to the books for a huge variety of reasons.
Like I said in my videos, I was excited and intrigued to see this AU version of the story (I love AUs!) but my complaints with the writing of the episodes mostly came back to when the show was trying to stick TOO MUCH to the books.... Because the show was really making its own thing with its own versions of the characters and all these new ideas, but then suddenly it would shove in a scene/dialogue straight out of the books which would contradict or make no sense with everything else the show had already worked to set up with the new direction it was taking itself.
Critiquing sloppy/weak writing does not mean I or any other fan who feels the same is doing it for racist reasons. Much of my criticism was about how the scripts changed Lestat's character to make him so much worse than he was in the books (which would be fine, it's their story, whatever--except the show runners told us over and over again that the whole reason Louis was doing a second interview was so that this time we could see the real version of Lestat and how Louis felt about him instead of the mean, insulting version he gave in the first interview). There was a lot promised by the showrunners about what their adaptation would be like that was not delivered ("closer to the books than the 1994 movie," "true to the spirit of Anne Rice" etc). The entire reason I made my videos was to evaluate how well the show measured up to those promises.
Worse than making Lestat so irredeemable, the way the first season ended in a way that made so many fans believe that Louis might have been lying about everything didn't sit well with me at all--it's a harmful stereotype to make the black man a liar, especially when it comes to abuse. I know the "the DV didn't actually happen and black Louis was lying or mind controlled by his evil non-white boyfriend" became a running fan theory, but I personally don't believe it one bit. But I can see why so many fans do--again, sloppy/weak writing on the show's part.
Like I said in my video, the only thing Louis actually lied about in ep7 (and he was lying to himself, not deliberately lying to Daniel) was the depth of his love for Lestat at the end. And that's entirely canon for Louis to deceive himself about--admitting how much he truly loves Lestat always came hard for him. I personally don't think it's going to turn out that anything Louis told us in season 1 was a lie. I think the show would have revealed that at the end of the season, not waited another season (or two or three) to reveal that. And the theme of season 2's promotional material has all been about memory, not honesty. I don't think Louis could mistakenly remember getting dropped from a mile in the sky and the months/years of recovery afterward, so I personally think all those memories were real.
The first three episodes of season 1 made Louis's struggle with race its primary focus, and the series description began with how Louis was chafing at society as a black man. But then from episode 4 on, the focus of the show shifted entirely. Obviously racism still existed in Louis's world, but the show pushed it all entirely to the background with little things, like segregation on the bus, and we saw the characters quietly taking in stride, not making any plot out of it. Suddenly all of Louis's character-driving moments weren't about that anymore and we were in a whole new story, when his battle against racism had been the entire theme of the first three episodes. This was something I noticed and pointed out in my videos--I didn't say it was a bad thing (after all, seeing people be racist to Louis on screen, while "realistic," isn't exactly fun for anyone, and we'd already seen plenty), but I did think the sudden dramatic shift in story focus weakened the show's themes and throughline.
Again this comes down to writing, and the premise/script was written by white people. I think they could have done much better with much more non-white involvement on the writing level. I think the show could have been stronger with some more care taken to create consistency and smoother transitions between episodes (like when they take Claudia out to feed in episode 4, suddenly all the race riots are gone, when everything was on fire 2 hours ago). It's common for shows to have each episode written by a different person, even though they all collaborate in a writer's room, but to me it felt like the show lacked efficient script supervision to make sure all the scripts flowed into each other without any contradictions or inconsistency.
When I talked about these things in my videos, when I said I would have liked the show to do better with the way it missed the mark sometimes in handling racial aspects (even though other parts I commended as being great), and the way I critiqued the inconsistencies and contradictions, some people took that to mean I hated the show entirely. The point of my videos was to see how well the show measured up to Rolin Jones's promises that it was so faithful and respectful to the spirit of the books and that all he wanted to do was honor Anne's work. I know the books back and forth, enjoy having a ND hyperfixation that gives me near-encyclopedic knowledge of the texts and Anne as an author. So people ask me questions about them all the time, especially in comparison to the adaptations. Who better to make videos evaluating how well the show measured up to RJ's promises and claims of faithfulness? But some people took me comparing the show to the books to mean I thought it was a bad thing that they weren't the same, and I hated the show entirely for not being the same as Anne wrote it, and therefore that meant I (and anyone else who loves the books) was racist 🤷

P FKN R!!! 🇵🇷 (Warning Harsh Language!)
Miles is always proud of his Puerto Rican side. Hell, he's the first one in Spider Society to burst out his Boricua music out loud. He wears his flag on his back when there's any Puerto Rican holidays or parades. Hell, he made a special suit with the Puerto Rican flag on it when he felt like showing off his culture, his Pride!
Yet today a racist asshole test him! Miles flew in the air using his venom strike, absorbing energy to give him a boost to do a flip before launching his webs to swing! The 19 year old wore his black, and red suit with the Puerto Rican flag on his chest to his torso.
Miles blasting Bad Bunny song "P FKN R" as he sings out loud as he swings from building to building: Si no sabes de dónde soy, no me ronquen, no -getting pump as he fight a rodder trying to steal from an elderly woman- Si no sabes de dónde soy, eh-eh, (ey) eh-eh, (ey, ey, ey)! -he beats up the robber as he give the purse back to the older woman before going up in the air to look for more crimes-
He sings along to his music: Yo soy de P fuckin' R (hoo)! -bangs his head as he swings- WHOA! Bad Bunny, you know me so well! -he chuckles as he went on a building keeping watch on the City's mainstream. The roads were closed off for Puerto Rican Day parade, he knew he needs to be home early to celebrate with his family. His mom took the day off for this occasion. Little Billie is probably wearing a cute dress with the Puerto Rican flag and her hair with ribbons matching the flag's colors- I should get a closer look to see if everything is good! -he saw the parade is about to start, so he should make sure no hate crimes were gonna be committed-
A familiar voice: Luv, what are you wearing? -Miles turns around to find Hobie standing behind him-
Miles happily smiles underneath his mask to find his boyfriend: OH hey, bae! -he went to hold his partner's hand- I'm glad you came! I thought you would miss today!
Hobie arched his eyebrow being masked: I never missed anything you invited me to. Now, what is this? -he eyes on the flag- A bit too Patriotic?
Miles chuckles giving him a kiss on the cheek with his mask on: Mi amor, it's my Puerto Rican pride.
Hobie: Isn't it a bit much?
Miles pouts: No! I think it's cool! -sounding a bit upset- You don't like it?
Hobie quickly change his statement: I meant, to be devoted to a country... the government, I meant. You know, how I feel about it. -he looks down at the parade seeing massive crowds- Isn't America's way to manipulate Puerto Ricans to appreciate being part of America? When they colonize your country and set up a military base! -he did a quick research on his partner's country and it's history-
Miles understood what he meant: Well, that may be true, but! -he hugs his partner's arm- Look, mi amor! You see how everyone is excited to celebrate being Puerto Rican! It runs in our blood, our pride, our culture is who we are! We may lost too much, hell Puerto Rico never had independence, but we're still here. Still Boricua! Still proud of our flag! It's who we are, and we throw the craziest parties, baby.
Hobie hears the loud music and many families gathering around to celebrate: I guess so.. you know how I am.
Miles: Hey, you're here so you're gonna get the full effect! Come on, let's check around. I know, you may judge America for their crazy ass colonization, but remember, you love protecting POC! There might be racists trying to commit hate crime!
Hobie became alert: Oh! I have no problem beating up a racist! -he grins under his mask, he follows his partner. As they got lower to the parade. The crowds cheers as they saw their Spiderman swinging by-
A random woman: Look! Mira! Mira! Es Spiderman! Boricua Spiderman!
The crowd in the parade cheers playing louder music and getting hype: Spiderman! Spiderman! Te amo!
One guy shouted: He's Puerto Rican?
Miles laughs: Por supuesto que soy puertorriqueño! -as he got low taking a balloon to give a little boy being carried by his mother-
Hobie saw the crowd wearing their flags in outfits, makeup, all sorts to show their pride. He follows Miles through the parade seeing no crime, yet. The music plays outlaid from the parade: Yo soy de P fuckin' R (P fuckin' R) Eh-eh-eh-eh-eh (ah)!
Miles turns around swinging backwards to look at his partner while singing along: Los maliante' con la' R! Prr-prr-prr-prr-prr -he chuckles- Come on, bae! Mejor que la boca cierre, ey Ah-ah-ah-ah
Some of the crowd started to sing or dance getting hype for their parade: Antes que los mío' te entierren (oye) Uh-uh-uh-uh-uh (yeh)
Hobie chuckles: You know what, I get it.
Miles smiles under his mask: I'm glad. You know, my mom made a lot of food so you can try.
Hobie: Yum, I didn't eat just to be prepare. -The two swing side by side-
Miles laughs: She made a lot of food! So you better eat like five plates! Also everyone is coming by for the roof top party! Isn't it exciting! -The loud Bomba music plays as they watch the parade starting having the female dancers following the rhythm of the music. Everyone enjoying the large floats, organizations, and other groups walking as they wave their flags.- Wow, it's bigger than last time!
Hobie saw a small group of men looking a bit suspicious: Aye, luv. Looks like we found a couple of muppets...
Miles looks over seeing them holding up microphones: Huh oh! Let's check it out! -being quick to get over the group-
The hate group had a leader preaching out about God and shouting at the Puerto Ricans: GO back to your countries! This a hate on America! You don't belong here -causing the crowd around to get upset-
A woman speaking in Spanish: No tienes derecho a estar aquí! ¡Estás arruinando el desfile! Déjanos en paz, Puñetas! Pendejos! Mama a tu culos! -some of the other crowd tried to held her back seeing they didn't want the cops to come in or worst stop the parade-
Miles flew down seeing the group of men: Hey fellas, what's going on here?
The hate group scowls at Spiderman's outfit with disgust. The leader had his microphone on: You are an American! You are disrespecting our country's belief! USA! USA!
Miles could only scowl under his mask: Hey man, people are allowed to celebrate where they come from!
The leader kept over talking Spiderman: Your just Spiderman 2! You're not even the real Spiderman! WE WANT SPIDERMAN!
Hobie crosses his arms getting super pissed off. Miles stops him: I got this. -he turns to the group- I kinda suggest you all to leave! Your ruining-
The leader of the hate group: FUCK YOU! GO BACK TO MEXICO! -the crowd behind Miles started to get super mad, almost riling up with anger. The racist insult was enough to cause them to shout back. MEXICO? Miles got mad too. This group is testing him- You and all your Mexican, pals should go back to your country! USA! USA! -the hate group chanted wearing their American flags-
Miles: I'm giving you one chance to apologize to me and my people! Before-
The leader over talks him: Or WHAT? You're gonna hit me? I'm using my first amendment! FREEDOM OF SPEECH, BUDDY! YOUR NOT EVEN A REAL SPIDERMAN WITH THAT TACKY FLAG YOU HAVE ON! -The older leader grins widely to pissed off Spiderman-
Hobie took out his guitar: That's it. I'ma beat this bloke! -the crowd behind him agrees-
Miles push him back: NO! We are better than them! -He turns to the group- you left me no choice!
The leader said: Oh yeah! You're nothing but a dirty sp- -Miles quickly uses his webs to shut up the leader then quickly uses his webs to tied the group, then he swing them high on the building-
Miles smiling happily: Ah-ah-Ah! Tsk. Tsk. I give you a chance to apologize and to go home, but since you want to harass me and everyone here. I think I have the right to shut you up! -the crowd cheers out loud as they saw the hate group being web against the building up high. Some took photos and laugh out loud-
Hobie grins widely seeing one of the dumbass racist pissing himself crying about his fear of heights: Wonderful, luv! -He slouches on Miles being a bit handsy with him-
The leader of the group shouted spotting the two Spidermen being a bit too close for his liking: UGH! YOUR NOTHING BUT A FUCKING FAGGOT! UGH, DISGUSTING! YOUR GOING TO HELL TOO!
Miles arched his eyebrow under his mask: Oh yeah? Well -He lift Hobie's mask to reveal his lips, then he lift his own mask to show his lips. A bit of his nose showing his pierced Septum. Then his lips pressed against Hobie's without a care who was watching. When he pulled his lips away then to hide his lower mouth- I RATHER BE A FAGGOT THAN A FUCKING RACIST!
Hobie froze being too in shock by his partner's action, he felt Miles' hand pulling down his mask to hide his mouth. He could've never love any more than he already did- No, he's falling in love with Miles all over again! Miles grab the Pride flag from one of the civilians having to tie it around his neck, flaunting it. Hobie could only awe at his boyfriend.
The crowd cheers having mix reactions from being shock to joy about the scene. Hell, most of their reactions were positive. The hate group were making loud taunts, until Hobie shut their mouths up with his webbing. Then he got close to the leader: Aye, mate. You're lucky if it wasn't me! I would've throw you in the Hudson River and let you all drown! -his voice low and menacing- I'll left you off with a warning, mate. Start another racist shit, and I will fucking kill you myself, huh? -the men looked horrified.- So you will stop this crap and not bother my darling, do you hear? -they all nodded- Good! -he harshly patted the leader's cheek almost slapping him-
Miles shouted: Come on, we gotta patrol some more, bae! -he launched his web shooter causing the to swing as he wave at the crowd-
Hobie follows him seeing the crowd being so happy, they can have a peaceful parade. The hate group being stuck on the building to be made an example of. As they made their rounds, the two got up on a building to watch one last time. Miles being happy by the parade, then he heard Hobie being breathless: I love you, Miles.
Miles being surprised: Huh, what made you say that? -he giggles being so bashful-
Hobie pulls Miles close to him for a close hug: You were amazing! No Spiderman would've done what you did!
Miles: Hahaha are you implying not even you would've stop them racist assholes?
Hobie shook his head: You know, what I mean. You kissing me in front of the crowd? Heh, New York City is gonna go crazy for you being bisexual, Sunflower.
Miles snorted: Pfft, good! Let them know that this bisexual boy issuing their asses! AND HE'S PUERTO RICAN! DOUBLE PUNCHES! -he chuckles- I love you, too Hobie.
Hobie: Can I get another kiss, Brooklyn?
Miles chuckles: Do you have to ask?
Hobie holding his love: Consent is important, luv.
Miles smiles widely: Sure, baby! -The two lift their mask to reveal their lips to kiss again. This time Hobie holds Miles like his special gem, being oh so gentle. The parade being loud and proud as the crowd celebrates their Puerto Rican Day while Yo Soy Boricua, Pa'Que Tu Lo Sepas by Taino plays in the background.-
(Sorry for the harsh language! Was listening to Bad Bunny and saw a post that made me inspired @babyhellboy post and comic photo also another comic post of Hobie Brown saying he rather be a F-word than a Fascist. Hehe, you know his Sunflower is heavily inspired by him😉.)

I may get hate for this but this is my opinions on characters in the spider verse movies. And feel free to disagree with me. I will only be talking about the movies portrayal of characters not the comics so I may like a character more in the comics but not in the movie. And another thing I'll take into consideration is plot importance. These are just my thoughts on the characters in general like morally, personality, and how they make me feel
Miles Morales: main character so he immediately gets some points, his story in the first movie was amazing, and it kinda leaks into the second film with him trying to find his place as Spiderman and he has had some of the best moments in the franchise. It makes me so excited for them to rap up his story in the next one. 10/10
Gwen Stacy: her story has been one of the best parts of these movies as it perfectly shows why she does and act the ways she does in the movies from the loss of her best friend and that fear holding her back till miles appears and her conflict with her dad fueling her to stay with the spider society and her later facing her problems instead of running away from them makes her and amazing character, also her fight with the vulture was one of my favorite parts of the movie. 10/10
Peter B Parker: he was good in the first film with it shows his problems in his own world and Miles helping him overcome some fears like having children and in the second him having mayday showing he got his life together, but he loses major points for the second film. He did nothing important only hurting miles and I understand her joins Gwen at the end to help him but hes constantly bringing his child to battles and did nothing when Gwen was being sent home to a place where she had no safe place to stay and where her dad had tried to shoot her. Like my guy you are an adult Atleast try and say something.4/10
Peni Parker: absolutely adorable in the first film and very helpful in making and new goober her and spider are so interesting and her dynamics with porker and noir is so cool, it made me so sad when her Fathers mech died. While she didn't do anything important in the second film the movie did a great job of showing she had changed, I can wait to see more of her in the next film. 7/10
Spider noir: I definitely think he's over rated but I can see why. his design slaps and he was quite funny in the first film, they did a great job in showing someone from a black and white world trying to adjust to a world of colours, he was a good character with some great lines despite not doing anything of much importance to the story, him throwing a car at tombstone was badass though and his relationship with peni was cute. Maybe my opinion will change on him in the next movie though. 6/10
Spider ham: I don't really feel anything towards him he had some good lines and his fight with scorpion was great but other than that he didn't really do anything, hopefully this will change in the next film. 5/10
Miguel O'Hara: here's where people may disagree with me. I like the concept for his powers and I think he's a great antagonists to Gwen and miles but other than that I don't care about him as a character. Im interesting to see what happens with him in the next film but I ain't to fond of his design, and his cannon even theory is fucking shifty, like bro the reason the world collapsed was because you replaced a dead person not because you stopped one event. Also he should not be treating children the way he does in the film , like dude you were a father wtf. And the hype around the character also puts me off him as well. 3/10
Jessica drew: I actually really like Jess, while she didn't do to much in the film, it was still enough to get me interested in her character from her first interaction with Gwen showing concern for her and later becoming her mentor. When Gwen gets sent home it shows her slowly swaying away from Miguel , the film actually shows a conflict within this character which a lot of characters seemingly don't get, and makes me wanna see how she's handled next film. 7/10
Hobie brown: I like Hobie he's just over rated as fuck. He makes the new watches for Gwen and the gang and also helps miles get free but other than that, he hasn't got much of an individual story in the movie yet, he just felt like a side character, which technically he is but most of the other spiders don't have the problem for me. I think I heard where seeing more of his world in the next film so hopefully it gives us more insight to his character, but I also feel like once again it's the fan girls which are ruining the character for me. 5/10
Pavitr Prabhakar: I loved him his introduction was incredible and and entire section of the movie in mumbattan was incredible, with the black hole forming in his world, it provides his character with a secondary story behind the main movie one. Him joining the gang at the end of the film even with his world collapsing shows how good of a friend he is, miles helped him so now he's gonna help miles, while he didn't do to much in the movie they did a great job of setting up his character for the next one. 7/10
Margo kess: I absolutely love her design and she wasn't in the film enough, the only thing she really did in the movie was let miles go but it had a big impact, I can't wait to see her on the team in the next film. I'm also sick of people putting her and Gwen against each other the besties deal with it. Her score would be higher I just haven't seen enough of her character yet. 6/10
Miles g morales: badass entrence and it was a really cool ending to the film, thought were don't know anything about him yet as a character so I can't really rate him yet. 4/10
Spider cat: 10/10 no questions asked.

This Chapter: “Don’t have’ta fight me anymore, Buck. I’m not gonna leave you. I’m your Headship and I’m gonna take care’a you. Just gotta trust me to do that for you, Baby.” TW: [dub-con sex at the end of this one.]

They leave for the continent the next day.
Sharon and Pietro spend the morning packing up, and when they drive to the channel harbor, Bucky seizes the first opportunity he sees to misbehave. Steve has gone off to purchase ferry tickets and left him in the first-class lounge, when Bucky spots his chance in the form of three reporters.
Society page writers are easily distinguishable from the general public. They tend to congregate in small groups in places like this, always seeming to have a low, eager chatter about them as they wait. They dress common but sharp, wear press badges on their lapels, and almost always have notepads and pens in hand, an assistant one step behind with a camera box tucked under their arm. Bucky could spot them a mile away.
They haven’t taken notice of him yet, but he quickly walks up and makes himself obvious. In the States, they would’ve jumped at the sight of him, but now it takes the senior most reporter giving Bucky a double take before anything happens. “Your … Your Lordship?” the man hedges, eyeing Bucky carefully. “Oh! Young Lord Barnes, is that you?”
Bucky acts marginally bothered at being noticed. “Yes,” he confirms. “Good day.” The other reporters perk up and act more enthused at the confirmation of who Bucky is. Eager to have discovered someone of importance, they crowd closer and start asking him about his marriage to Steve and his trip to Europe. Bucky answers their questions politely, if somewhat haughtily. He’s waiting for just the right chance to say something utterly outrageous, when the senior reporter surprises him by asking,
“And what about your father’s expulsion from the Senate? Have you spoken with your family since the ruling came down?”
Bucky freezes. “What?” he says. “His … his what?” He feels his heart thud faster in his chest. He hadn’t known the news had broken yet, hadn’t thought the inditement was supposed be made public until—
“The Senate voted to impeach days ago.” The reporter looks at him expectantly. “Don’t you have anything to say about your husband’s vote? Were you surprised?”
“Are you angry with him?” another of the reporters asks.
Bucky gapes. “His … his vote?” He knows he sounds like a stammering idiot, but he was completely unprepared for this. “My husband?” A feeling of dread is overtaking him as he begins to make sense of the reporters’ questions. Oh no, he thinks. It can’t be. Steve couldn’t … he wouldn’t have …
“What was your reaction when you heard that your husband voted ‘Yea’ for the motion to impeach?”
Bucky feels sick. “What?!”
The reporters all pause, looking taken aback at Bucky’s response. They seem to realize that this is news to him, and that just gets them more excited. They jump into another round of hasty questions: How could he not know? Hasn’t he been paying attention to the news? Has his new Alpha been isolating him?
Bucky gapes at them stupidly for another moment, before finally shouting at them to “Shut up! Be quiet!” He’s breathing heavily, face flushed with embarrassment and nerves. His mind is reeling, and all he can think about is that Steve voted ‘Yea’ for his father’s impeachment. Bucky can’t believe it! When would he even have had the time to …
Oh. He thinks of that morning several days ago, when he’d woken and Steve hadn’t been in the apartment. How Sharon had said Steve was called away to a meeting, how Steve had come home and said himself that there’d been a motion called, that he’d had to go send a telegram instructing ‘how he wanted his vote to go’.
The sick feeling in Bucky’s gut turns sour and acidic, churning itself from horror to fury in an instant. He grits his teeth and fumes over it: Steve had been out sending his vote to ruin Bucky’s family, strip them of their title and their place in Society! And all the while Bucky's been touring London with the bastard! Sleeping with him! Bucky swears he sees red.
He whirls back to face the reporters. “My husband voted the way he was expected to,” he snaps. “He followed along after his peers in the Senate, toed the party line, because that’s all he’s capable of doing. I know for a fact that he didn’t even read the indictment. I’ve seen the way he works. He inherited his family’s Seat before he was ready for the position. His aides basically do his job for him. It’s pathetic.”
The reporters’ eyes have gone huge at Bucky’s scathing remarks. They’re scribbling down his words as fast as their hands can manage, squawking out more intrusive questions like, “Some are saying that your marriage was hastily arranged in anticipation of your House’s scandal. Is this true??”
Bucky sees Steve coming over. He’s looking at the reporters and Bucky, eyes narrowed as he notices that Bucky’s giving an interview. He’ll be in earshot within seconds, and Bucky hurries to say, “Of course it’s true. I only married him for the money he promised my family. I had no idea he’d be so weak as to vote against my father, but I really shouldn’t be surprised. His character is wanting, to say the very least.”
“So it’s not a happy marriage?”
“Are you kidding me?! I can’t stand him.”
“Bucky!” Steve has arrived. He looks utterly alarmed. “What are you doing?” Bucky just glares at him. The reporters start asking Steve questions about all of the things Bucky has just said, but Steve throws up a hand and silences them, snapping, “This is over. I didn’t give permission for my Spouse to be interviewed.”
“But Senator! He—”
“Enough,” Steve growls. He takes Bucky by the arm and begins moving him away. “I’m his Headship, I didn’t authorize this. You know the law. If any of you print a word of what he just said, I’ll have you prosecuted and your publications run into the mud.”
The reporters all start complaining at that, and then when the complaining doesn’t work, they switch to begging Steve to reconsider and grant his permission after all, but it’s too late: He’s already dragging Bucky away from the lounge.
Tumblr media
“Turn around and put your hands on the wall,” Steve commands. He doesn’t shout, but it’s still his Voice and it’s absolutely no-nonsense. He’s dragged Bucky into their passenger cabin on the ferry, affording them enough privacy for discipline—and for Bucky to pitch a fit. Bucky snarls at him and jerks away, but Steve recaptures his wrists and shakes him. “Don’t make me hold you.”
“You voted against my father!” Bucky yells. He’s so mad he can practically taste it. “How could you do that, Steve?!”
“I had no choice in the matter and you know it,” Steve says lowly. “The evidence was overwhelming. Weapons smuggling, Bucky. He put our national security at risk just to pad his own purse.”
“It’s my family!”
Steve glares at him. “Put. your hands. on the wall.” When Bucky hesitates, he threatens, “If you don’t do it on your own, I’m tripling the punishment.”
Bucky swallows heavily, some of his anger replaced by trepidation. He’s never seen Steve look so mad. Doubt flashes through him and he worries that maybe he went too far with what he said to the reporters. But no, he thinks, squashing that down. Steve deserves it and more. “I hate you,” he hisses. Slowly, he turns to face the cabin’s wall. He raises both hands up to the level of his shoulders and places his palms flat against the wood paneling.
Steve steps up against his side, close enough that he can murmur in his ear, “You are never to give unauthorized comments to the Society pages, do you understand me?”
Bucky clenches his teeth together. “Whatever,” he grits out. He’s startled into a yelp when Steve’s hand comes down unexpectedly, spanking him over the fabric of his trousers. “Ow!”
“You are never to give unauthorized comments to the Society pages,” he repeats. “Do you understand me?” He hits him again, making Bucky gasp,
“Yes!”
Steve's hand comes down once more, which is almost more than Bucky can take—not physically but mentally. He’s so mad at Steve he can hardly stand it, and now he’s burning with the humiliation of being disciplined as well. When Steve steps away and tells him he can bring his hands down, Bucky whirls around with a glare. “Get away from me,” he hisses. “Don’t fucking touch me.”
Steve seals his lips tight together and says nothing. He just shakes his head in frustration at Bucky and goes to sit down on one of the cabin’s couches. “I can’t believe you,” he huffs. “Utterly disgraceful.”
Bucky feels humiliated tears prick at the edges of his eyes. He swipes at them hastily, hoping that Steve doesn’t notice. “You can say that again," he mumbles. They sit in obstinate silence for a long time. Neither one of them willing to break the stalemate as the horns blare and the ferry's engines shudders into motion.
Eventually, Steve sighs and says somberly, “Come on, Buck. You’re not stupid. You knew what they had on your father. You know how politics work.”
“Still doesn’t mean you couldn’tve—”
“He was wrong, Bucky. What he did was wrong. He deserved to be ousted.”
Bucky clenches his mouth shut, unwilling to admit that Steve’s right. It hurts too much. “My family—”
“Will be fine,” Steve finishes for him. “I’ve seen to it.” Bucky continues to fume and Steve shakes his head. “Just stop it,” he chides. “Sit down and relax.”
“Relax? You just spanked me!”
“A grand total of three times. You deserved it, and you’re fine,” Steve says. “I went easy on you.”
Bucky can’t argue that, because really? he knows that Steve did. It still infuriates him that he had to take it, though. “I hate you,” he mutters again, sitting down on the couch opposite of Steve’s. “And I hope they print every word I said.”
“It was all lies.”
“I don’t care.”
Steve inhales deeply and lets it out slowly, like he’s trying to keep his patience with Bucky. When he speaks next, his voice is surprisingly soft. “Bucky?” he says.
“What?”
“Look at me.”
Bucky glances up, meeting Steve’s eyes a little nervously at his eerily quiet tone. “What?”
“I don’t want to hit you, ever.”
“Could’ve fooled me.”
“But it’s becoming very clear to me that I’ll have to. You’re out of line.” Bucky’s eyes widen, and before he can formulate a response Steve adds, “So let me make this perfectly clear to you: The next time you act up like this, you won’t be getting off with three smacks over your clothes. Disrespecting me in public? Slandering our House?” He shakes his head. “Not happening anymore.”
“Says you.”
“Hey. I’ve never been anything but nice to you,” Steve snaps, losing his composure. “There’s no good reason for you to behave like this!”
(There’s one, Bucky thinks sorely. Though Steve doesn’t know it, yet.)
“From now on, if you insist on stepping out of your place, I’ll put you back in it.” Bucky’s nostrils flare, ready to throw out a nasty retort, but Steve beats him to the chase, Voicing, “Say: ‘yes, Husband’.”
“You do know I’m not omega, right? I don’t actually have to—”
“Bucky.”
“Fine!” Bucky snaps. “Fine, Steve. You win. I won’t talk to the press.” He already knows he shouldn’t have done it, knows he’s being outrageously disobedient and disrespectful and immature. He also knows that he’ll have to soldier on with doing just that, if he ever wants this marriage to end. After today, though, that prospect seems much more daunting than it originally had. He isn’t looking forward to it.
Tumblr media
After the episode with the reporters, Bucky is careful to choose slightly less extreme ways to act up. He needs to drive Steve away, but figures that slow and steady disobedience will win the race. No need to push Steve so hard that the alpha takes it out on his hide. So, Bucky refrains from the whole public disrespect tactic and takes a more subtle approach.
“Subtle” translates to the following:
1. Leaning too far over the edge of the Eiffel tower restaurant’s deck, even after Steve repeatedly tells him not to. Then spitting escargot into his napkin in plain sight of their waiter with an immature “Ew! Snails, seriously? French people are nuts.”
2. Touching artifacts in Venice that he very well knows he’s not supposed to be touching, in full view of their displeased tour guide. (“Sir! Please, control your Spouse!”)
3. Removing his swim trunks at the beach in Mykonos before Steve can stop him. (“It’s a nude beach, Steve. They’re used to it here. It’s no big deal!”)
That last one results in a rather flustered Steve dragging him back into their whitewashed villa and shoving him down on the bed. Bucky gasps, bouncing once on the mattress and watching with wide eyes as Steve shucks off his own swim trunks, grabs something from the bedside table and tosses it to the blankets. He climbs up over Bucky.
“What’re you—”
“Shut up.” He pushes him down by the shoulders and kisses him hotly.
Bucky moans despite himself, Steve’s sun-warmed skin feeling so good up against his own. His hands fly to Steve’s body without thought, running over the hard muscles of his back. Bucky feels his cock taking interest and he makes a questioning noise when Steve pulls back from the kiss. “I thought you were mad?” he breathes.
“I am,” Steve says, but he just goes back to kissing him hotly, running his hands all over him and rubbing their bodies together. “You’re a pain in my ass,” he tells him, flipping him over and reaching into the bedcovers for the jar of—
Oh. Bucky inhales sharply when he feels the wet swipe of fingers over his entrance. They haven’t been intimate since the night of his nightmare, back in London. “Steve,” he breathes.
“Tell me no,” Steve says quietly, voice right by his ear. “Or else spread your legs.”
Heat pools low in Bucky's gut at hearing that, and he instinctively parts his legs, wanting to please his Alpha, wanting more of that quiet, domineering tone directed at him. Steve makes a rumbling sound of approval and slots a thigh between his legs, keeping them apart. He rubs the slick around his hole, presses and works the muscle without pushing inside. He waits until Bucky starts to react, then works him open on one, two, three; fingering him until he’s gasping and humping against the bed and pleading for more. “Steve,” he whines. “Come on.”
“Come on what?” he goads. “What do you want, hm? Want me inside you?”
“Yes!” Bucky hisses, frustrated. After stripping on the beach, he thought Steve was dragging him back here to discipline him. Now that he knows he’s getting fucked, he can hardly stand waiting for it. It suddenly occurs to Bucky that he’s terribly horny, and has been for days. “Come on,” he grunts, impatient.
Steve grips him by the hair to bend his neck, weighing him down with his body and scraping his teeth over the faint mark of where he’d bitten him that night.
Bucky shivers at the possessive gesture. He so does not regret having shed his swim trunks now. “You don’t like other people seeing me naked,” he says breathily, delighting at the idea of it.
“No, I don’t.” Steve nips him again. “Your body’s for me, not anybody else.” He plants his knees outside of Bucky’s and shoves his legs together, holding him still that way. He fits his cock against his entrance, the head of it blunt and intimidating. “Say it,” he commands.
Against the covers, Bucky's mouth curls and his cock throbs. “No.”
“Say it.”
He groans, both at Steve’s Voice and at the way he’s rubbing the head of his dick against his rim—pressing but not penetrating, not quite. “Fine,” Bucky huffs, giving in because he just wants it so bad. “'My body’s not for anybody else'.” His cheeks burn hot as he admits it, but he’d be lying if he said he wasn’t aroused by the way Steve's pushing him around and demanding things of him. "Happy?" he snarks.
Steve's fingers tighten warningly in his hair, but he rewards him for the submission by pressing in, firm and slow, and they both groan in tandem as he's filled. Steve doesn’t stop until he’s fully seated, hips flush to Bucky's ass, his heavy body weighing him into the sheets.
“Fuck,” Bucky breathes. Steve is just holding still, his cock big and throbbing inside of him. “Ugh, move,” Bucky urges, trying to wiggle under his weight. “Steve, fuck, you gotta—Ah!” Steve snaps his hips back and fucks into him sharply, punching the breath right out of Bucky's lungs.
“Mine,” he growls.
“Fuck, yeah okay, whatever,” Bucky says, not really caring if Steve wants to say bossy shit right now. Just so long as he keeps moving, keeps fucking into him real firm and good. He’s so heavy behind Bucky, keeping him flat to the bed as he ruts into him. Bucky’s cock is absolutely trapped, rubbing deliciously against the sheets in a way that feels amazing, and pretty soon he feels himself ramping up towards orgasm from the stimulation. “C-close,” he gasps, wanting Steve to know how goddamn good he’s fucking him. “Oh, God.”
Steve growls and pulls them both back, pulls Bucky’s hips up off the bed and loops his forearm under his waist, holding him close. He fucks him harder and faster, his chest sealed to Bucky's back, their balls knocking together with every thrust. His hand closes around Bucky’s cock and Bucky shouts. “Yes,” Steve growls, jerking him off roughly. “Come on.”
It only takes a good few pulls until Bucky starts to come, moaning and shooting his load all over the sheets. Steve really lets himself go to town after that, dropping Bucky’s spent dick and grabbing his hips instead, pistoning his hips at a brutal pace. His hot, panting breaths collect against Bucky’s sweaty neck and their skin slaps together as he fucks into him hard. Finally, he stutters, moans turning guttural as he reaches down. Bucky feels his hand back there: the ever-familiar motion of Steve desperately squeezing his knot, milking the orgasm out of himself and into Bucky’s ass.
The mental image of it makes Bucky's balls throb and his cock twitch in a delicious aftershock. He groans against the bed, hardly caring as he collapses into his own sticky mess. “Ugh.”

4. He wanders off and gets lost in the biggest city in Turkey.
In all fairness, he doesn’t really mean to. He sneaks off from Steve, intending to remain close by and only make the other man think that he’s lost him. But he winds up losing track of Steve and then, well … then he gets all turned around.
He tries to remember the places he and Steve said that they would see in the city that day, thinking that maybe if he can make his way to one of those places, he might meet up with him. But going anywhere on his own proves to be quite the mistake. The roads and shop signs are all in Turkish, after all, and nobody speaks English.
Bucky gets increasingly embarrassed as he realizes that he has no clue how he’s going to find his way back to Steve or to their hotel. He’s been trying to figure out a solution by himself for over two hours and is just starting to contemplate taking himself to the nearest police station for help, when Steve shows up.
“Bucky! Thank God!”
Bucky whirls around, heart leaping at the sound of Steve’s voice, then at the sight of him. He heaves a sigh, full body, so relieved that he could laugh. He feels like he almost does. “Oh, God,” he says. “Steve!” He rushes forward, prepared to … he doesn’t know, maybe hug him out of sheer relief, but comes up short when he sees the look on Steve’s face. “Steve?” he asks. The alpha looks like he’s halfway ready to be sick, or scream. “Steve, I—”
“Did you do it on purpose?” Steve asks, tone unnaturally stiff. It’s like he’s trying with all his might to keep his voice neutral, waiting on Bucky’s answer.
Bucky gulps, wanting to lie but knowing he needs to tell the truth. That’s what’ll piss Steve off, after all. This feels dangerous though, like maybe he’s reaching a tipping point with Steve. He has to tread carefully. “I … yes,” he admits. “But I was just going to pretend! Then tail you. I didn’t mean to actually get—”
“Goddammit Bucky!” Steve hisses, hands flying up to rake through his hair. “Why do you keep doing this?! Why?!” When Bucky’s mouth opens and closes a few times, too nervous to answer, Steve says, “I don’t get you. It wasn’t like this in the beginning. You weren’t like this. What changed?”
Bucky stares at him, guts twisting in guilt at Steve’s words. “I … I just …”
“What?” Steve throws up his hands. “Ever since England it’s like you’re a different person. What are you trying to do, make me hate you?”
Bucky inhales, tensing up. His eyes flick nervously around and he instantly knows his face gives him away. He curses himself for not being able to school his expression faster. Steve’s eyes widen in understanding, and Bucky’s insides twist harder. “I didn’t—”
“That’s it, isn’t it?” Steve stares at him, slack-jawed. “That’s what you’ve been doing. Trying to get me mad enough to what? Divorce you?” Again, Bucky knows he gives himself away just by the way he stands there frozen in place, mortification coloring his cheeks. Steve’s face collapses into a scowl. “Fuck, are you serious?”
Bucky finally manages to scrounge up some sort of answer. He juts his chin out. “I never wanted this marriage and neither did you. If you just divorced me, I could have the life I wanted, my family would still have the money and you … you could marry somebody else.”
“Somebody else? Who?”
Bucky shrugs, thinking of Peggy Carter and her pretty face. “I dunno. Someone who wants this life. Someone you love.”
Steve squints at him. “Bucky … That’s so stupid.”
“It is not!”
“I want to be married to you!” Steve snaps, and the veracity with which he says it takes Bucky by surprise.
“You … you do?”
“Yes!” Steve stalks over and grabs him by the back of the neck and scruffs him, bearing his teeth at Bucky when he gasps. “Do you have any idea how worried I was when I couldn’t find you? In a city like this?!”
Bucky cringes. “I didn’t think—”
“No, you didn’t think.” Steve scruffs him again. “Look around you! We’re in freaking Istanbul, Bucky! Do you know how many Western betas and omegas are kidnapped out here? Sold into slavery?” He glares at him. “You could’ve been taken. With a pedigree like yours you’re practically a walking target!”
“Okay!” Bucky yells, jerking angrily in Steve’s hold. “Jesus. I’m sorry!”
Steve stares at him, and his face goes from angry to stony in only a few short seconds. It’s like he’s drawing into himself, gearing up for battle. It’s awful. “No,” he growls. “Not yet you’re not.” He tugs Bucky by the grip on his neck. “Come on.”
“W-where are we going?”
“Back to the hotel.”
Tumblr media
In their room, Steve points at the bed. “Sit down.”
Bucky obeys, dread curling in his gut because this is different from the time he spoke to the press, or mouthed off at that priest. Steve isn’t livid now like he was then. Oh, he’s angry all right, but this time it’s a different sort of anger. It feels quieter, more dangerous, like a storm that’s about to break. “Steve,” he tries, worried. “I’m—”
“Be quiet,” Steve says. He stands in front of him, arms crossed, face pinched. “You put yourself in real danger today, do you understand that?”
Bucky flushes and looks down. “I’m sorry.”
“Do you remember what I told you I’d do, if you ever put yourself in danger?”
Bucky’s eyes widen, but he doesn’t say anything. He remembers. In front of him, Steve nods like he’s made up his mind. Bucky has a bad feeling about this. “Steve, please—”
“Get up,” he says quietly. “I want you to stand up and take off your clothes. All of them.” His tone is calm, but it leaves no room for argument. Bucky’s either going to have to fight, or else obey.
He swallows heavily, not sure his pride can handle a struggle where he winds up losing to Steve anyway. Inhaling shakily, he stands up. “I didn’t mean to get lost,” he mumbles, hands already moving to take off his clothes.
“I know,” Steve says. “You’re not being disciplined for getting lost. You’re being disciplined for making stupid and selfish choices that wound up putting you in unnecessary danger.”
Bucky has to grind his teeth together to keep himself from talking back. If Steve’s about to spank him, he doesn’t want to make it any worse for himself. He strips down to his underwear, and with one last questioning glance at Steve, pulls those off as well. Steve looks him over dispassionately, which only makes it more humiliating.
“I want you to bend over the edge of the mattress,” he says quietly. “Grab one of the pillows and put it beneath your hips.”
Bucky flushes and glares at Steve, but he does as told, positioning himself with slow, awkward movements. Once he’s bent over and just about as embarrassed as he’s ever been in his life, Steve’s hand appears on his back. Bucky inhales in surprise, and Steve shushes him.
“I’m going to give you a choice,” he says.
“… What?”
He rubs up and down the center of Bucky’s back, eliciting goosebumps. “You can take thirty with my hand, or ten with my belt. It’s up to you.”
Bucky’s guts clench in trepidation. Both options sound horrible. “Th-thirty?” he stammers.
“Mmhm, or ten with the belt.”
Bucky’s eyes fall shut in defeat. Thirty sounds unbearable. He’s never been hit with a belt, but if it’s only ten times … He licks his lips and somehow manages to croak out, “Ten.”
Steve doesn’t say anything, he just removes his hand and stands back. It’s quiet except for the light ‘clink’ of metal and ‘whiff’ of a belt being pulled from its loops. Something strange and confusing swirls low Bucky’s belly at those sounds, at the feeling of Steve touching the folded-over length of leather against his bare ass. “I want you to count them,” he says, voice still so terribly quiet.
Bucky shivers. “Okay.”
One is such a shock that the pain isn’t even fully appreciated. He gasps and jerks where he lies, all the breath knocked out of him. “Oh!”
Steve doesn’t hit him again right away. He puts his hand on him again, large and warm in the middle of his back. “Count it,” he says.
Bucky swallows past his dry mouth and whispers, “One.”
“Good,” Steve says. “Now hold still.”
Each lash after that first one is terrible. It hurts so much that it makes Bucky feel panicked, convinced that he can’t bear it. He yells out each time, and each time Steve waits for him to calm down, strokes his back or his hair, murmuring soft reassurances. It’s intimate, awful, and mortifying—but Bucky thinks silent and distant would almost be worse. By the time the ninth strike lands, Steve is petting the backs of his fingers against Bucky’s cheek and telling him he’s good, that he can do this. And after the tenth, Bucky is crying.
“Count it, Honey,” Steve reminds him, when Bucky’s last shout has dissolved into soft sobs. “Come on.”
Bucky gulps in air and gasps, “Ten!” He’s never felt more unmoored in his life. He feels devastated. “Ten, ten, ten.”
Distantly, he registers the sound of Steve’s belt dropping to the floor, feels him moving. Steve takes the jar of lubricant from the bedside table, and Bucky’s breath catches in a tiny whimper when he sees it. He’s horrified as he feels blood pulse low in his groin, his cock awakening as if he could possibly have any interest in Steve touching him right now. “What?” he starts to ask, sniffling and wiping his messy face against the bedsheets. He tries to move, to get up, but Steve’s hand pushes down between his shoulder blades. The other slides down between his cheeks. Bucky cries out at the first touch of slick fingers at his entrance, but the sound morphs into a moan as his cock meets the soft pressure of the pillow that’s still trapped beneath his hips. “S-steve …”
“Shhh,” Steve soothes, holding him down as he wets him up and eases the tip of a finger inside. Bucky gasps and whimpers, embarrassment searing through him in a way it never has before. He shakes his head in denial, but between his legs, his cock is hardening rapidly. “Just let me do this,” Steve says. And it’s not bossy, is the thing: The way he says it is tender, almost hopeful in its assuredness. The hand that’s been holding Bucky down lets up and starts rubbing his back, up and down his spine, like he’s some skittish animal that needs to be calmed. Bucky exhales a long, shuddery breath and hears Steve’s pleased hum. “Good.” He works his finger for a long time before easing in another. “You did good, Bucky. Took your punishment just fine. It’s all over.” He works him open, curling on each drag out, humming when he hears Bucky’s gasps of pleasure. “There you go. Just relax now.”
Bucky keens miserably and scrubs his burning face against the bedcovers. He can’t stand it, hearing Steve talk to him like this, praising him and being sweet to him after he’s just humiliated him so badly. He feels like an open wound, oversensitive and raw and vulnerable. Even the pleasure that Steve’s giving him is overwhelming, and he doesn’t know what to do with it. When Steve removes his fingers and starts pressing in with his cock, Bucky lets out a tortured sob. “Oh! Steve.” The ache from the belt flares to life in his ass and his cock pulses against the pillow. He thrashes, upset. “Nngh …”
Steve folds over him, heavy and warm, pressing them together full-body as he bottoms out. “Shhh,” he soothes, holding still inside, letting Bucky feel where they’re connected. “You’re good, Buck. It’s all gonna be okay.”
Bucky shakes his head, so confused by everything that he’s feeling. He’s so embarrassed, so humiliated and ashamed, angry at Steve for hurting him like this. But he’s desperate for comfort and now Steve’s providing it and he can’t stop himself from liking it. His ass may ache, but inside it feels good: Being covered by Steve’s heavy body and held by his arms feels good, knowing that his Alpha isn't mad at him anymore feels good. “Nnuh,” he grunts again, fighting it. “Mnn, no.”
Steve starts to roll his hips, smooth, easy movements that drag his cock over Bucky’s inner walls in just the right way. Bucky moans, unable to stop the jagged little pants that escape him with every thrust in. He turns his face the other way, trying to escape Steve’s attention, but the alpha follows him, planting his forearm on the bed and dipping in close. He kisses the edge of his mouth and whispers, “Open your eyes, Sweetheart.”
Bucky whines but obeys. He blinks at Steve through tear-clogged lashes and whimpers confusedly. Steve somehow understands, and kisses him again. “S’okay, Buck,” he says, hips moving smooth and easy, keeping their bodies close, like he knows it’s what Bucky needs to keep from shattering apart. “I’ve got you, Sweetheart. I’m not mad. You’re good. You did so good.”
Bucky’s face burns and his cock jerks each time he fails to contain a moan or whimper at what Steve’s doing to him and how good it feels to submit, the humiliation and pleasure warring in his gut only driving him closer to orgasm. Steve just keeps whispering gentle things to him as he fucks him softly: “Don’t have’ta fight me anymore, Buck. I’m not gonna leave you. I’m your Headship and I’m gonna take care’a you. Just gotta trust me to do that for you, Baby.”
Mortifyingly, he can feel himself getting close the more Steve says, the coil of pleasure in his belly tightening with every humiliating promise, and his hips rutting with increasing desperation against the pillow beneath them. He moans and jerks miserably, tears still pricking at his eyes because he’s been scraped raw by this, but Steve doesn’t seem to mind. He just holds him down and kisses the tears away.
When one of his hands slides overtop of Bucky’s on the bed and laces their fingers together, Bucky cries out and goes tense, right on the edge. “Oh!” … And then Steve’s other hand slips under, wedging between Bucky and the pillow, finding his cock and wrapping around it and stroking. Bucky’s breath punches out of him in a warbled, broken sob as he starts to come.
It’s the most confusing orgasm he’s ever had.

After that night in Istanbul, things are different between them. There’s a fragile peace between them as they travel back across the continent by train, as though they’ve drawn a tentative truce without speaking a word. Bucky is uncharacteristically meek, as the memory of the things Steve did to him lingers in his mind, making him blush and draw into himself whenever he thinks about it. He doesn’t know exactly how to feel. He’s baffled that he’s feeling anything other than anger and indignity, but it’s like Steve fucked those emotions right out of him, and Bucky hasn’t yet figured out what they’ve been replaced with.
The welts from Steve’s belt take two days to fade, and by the time they board the ship that’ll take them back to America, the soreness is completely gone as well.

"I'm afraid I don't understand why someone would think it's a childish hobby," Saeran admitted with a frown. It wasn't all that surprising given the fact he didn't have a typical upbringing. Everything you had experienced in life would never align with what his circumstances had been as a child, but that didn't mean he wasn't willing to listen and learn... and the same went for you.
You wanted to better understand all the things he enjoyed when he was a kid and he wanted to know what you enjoyed when you were a child. Even if he admitted that most of the things he enjoyed were... limited to paper and pencil, you were happy to hear his amusement. He kept the hobby of journaling to this day because of how much enjoyment he'd had putting his thoughts on the paper.
That's why you spared no expense to make sure he had every bit of stationary he could ever want.
You wanted him to be able to have some piece of his childhood. It wasn't like he got to hold on to many of the things that he had as a child. The only thing he had to show for many of his experiences were bushels of paper... messy ones that came with him after Mint Eye. If he left anything behind in that place, he never made a point of asking to go back to get it.
Of course, when you got around to explaining most of the things you enjoyed as a child, you had many more things to rattle off on your list. A part of you felt... guilty telling him that you had experienced so much compared to him, but his expression showed he was just as excited to be able to learn as you had been about him. Of course, you weren't used to the question. Most people left their childhood toys and games in the past, but you'd seemingly never grown past that.
You didn't want to "grow up" and let go of the things that made you happy. Where was the fun in that? It would be sad if everybody "grew up" and had to let go of the things that made them happy. It wasn't as if there was a switch that went off one day that fully transformed you from one state to another. It'd be a day like any other!
You wanted to bring them with you so you could always enjoy yourself. Even as you got older and your interests became different from what they were in the past, you couldn't just let go of those possessions. In fact, you were the kind of person that kept your favorite things on display no matter how childish they seemed. Perhaps it was the fact that you had so many things that led Saeran to ask you in the first place.
He wondered if collecting was a hobby of yours when you first moved into your new home. You had to admit that that was part of it. You did like to go and collect things that stood out to you and your interests... but, you weren't like Jumin who loved to collect old books and tomes... nor were more in the same vein as Saeyoung who wanted to have his big hands on a hot rod that could drive him for miles.
No, no.
You were enamored with dolls. From their careful sculpting and fine paint details, to the care that'd be put into their clothing and accessories. A lot of people found it creepy if not... so childish when you shared this interest of yours. It used to bother you a lot when you were younger; so, you stopped talking to people about it and kept to yourself and the few safe spaces you had!
if you didn't already know that somebody was the same as you with their likes, you figured it was a bad idea to bring it up. Too many people bullied you in the past for you to risk it. Your dolls were friends and seeing them shine made you happy. They were your friends as a kid and you couldn't imagine not having the same feelings toward them that you had back then as you were today.
You were delicate with your touch. You readjusted the positioning of your doll so she would be better suited for sitting on the edge of the table. Turning your head, you looked back at Saeran.
"A lot of people think you're supposed to become responsible and mature as an adult. Unfortunately, a lot of society thinks you're not allowed to have fun once you become a grown up. That means you leave behind all the things that belonged to your childhood and are determined to be a social pariah. So, a lot of people will internalize shame if they're caught doing childish things by other adults," you explained.
"It's kind of disheartening, actually. It's one of those things that's hard to explain out loud if you haven't experienced it firsthand so I really don't know how to put it into words. There are just a lot of people who won't let themselves enjoy anything because they don't want to be seen as childish, ridiculous, immature, or cringey. I don't share my collection with people all that often because I get a lot of... strange looks."
It was true.
Far too many people would give you strange looks and make assumptions. You knew Saeran wouldn't do that. He wasn't the type. He would never make somebody feel awful for something they enjoyed. That's why it made you feel bad that you hadn't really told him about this interest of yours before. He, out of anyone, would have understood what it felt like to have been judged for no reason.
Saeran frowned. Sometimes, you had to wonder if he felt disheartened by how much the world could be a cruel place. He never seemed to let it show if he thought it was that way, perhaps, it was because he was grateful to be alive to experience everything and anything the world had to offer. He wanted to be able to experience everything, and that meant good things and bad things.
"May I?" He asked.
You nodded, unsure of his goals this time around. Maybe he was curious? "Of course."
With a delicate hand, he touched the porcelain with immense care. His eyes were inspecting each and every element he could find. He was just like that. If he had the chance to learn about something that he didn't know anything about, he wanted to find out everything imaginable. It was one of the things you loved about him, actually.
"It must take hours for people to create one of these. These details were... hand sculpted and painted. It's astonishing, really. It's a work of art," he murmured.
His eyes never wavered from your doll. He was tracing the details to memory, at least, that's what you thought. He had the exact same look on his face whenever he was trying to learn how to piece together a recipe for the first time. He would look at the final product and guess at how somebody put it all together. "I think it's a shame that people would make you feel bad for enjoying something. They're like your friends, right?"
You nodded.
He continued, "I feel the same way about my flowers. They were there for me when nobody else was. I always had somebody to talk to and I never felt lonely when they were by my side. To me, I would say that our experiences weren't all that different. Sure, maybe the difference between us was the vessel we chose to have as our friends. But the comfort that we experienced from our friends? That's... something that nobody should be able to take away, my love. It doesn't matter what age you are, as long as you are happy with these friends, that's all that matters."
Without a single moment of hesitation, he placed your doll back in your arms and closed them around your dear friend. You looked down and then back at him. For some reason, that tingling feeling inside your chest was warmer than it had ever been. That sort of thinking could've been considered ridiculous by most people, but to you? It was Saeran through and through.
"I know, you're right." You smiled.
He took that as an opportunity to lean in and steal a tiny kiss from your lips. "So, why don't you tell me all about your friends? I mean, you've heard me talk about flowers for hours, but I haven't had a chance to hear you talk about these friends before. I want to know, my love."
Even if you were going to struggle with internalized shame about this your entire life, you knew you would always find safety in his arms.

Spider & Spot Dynamic Headcanons 2/?
Based off of my post >>> here
Part 1 of Spider & Spot Dynamic >>> here
-) Bullying is not tolerated in Johnathon's class. That goes double if the victim of such behavior is Miles. Johnathon knows how hard it is for Miles to be respected and acknowledged by his peers, so he constantly shuts down any disrespect directed toward Miles.
-) Miles and Johnathon are well-known by Spider Society and plans to contain both anomalies were called off after Johnathon calmly threatened Miguel:
"You and Morales can either come quietly or--"
"No, here's what I want you to do, Mr. O'Hara. You can either turn around and leave, or we can fight right here, right now, and I'll warp you into a dimension where you'll fall forever in a permanent loop."
"You won't--"
"You think I won't? Just ask Cletus Kasady. Now, leave, and we can both resume our respective roles as upstanding heroes of society. You keep away from my nephew, and I won't open a hole big enough to devour Nueva York. That sounds good to you?"
"...Fine, but I will keep tabs on you two."
"Just remember to keep your distance."
-) Jefferson took a long while to accept Johnathon and even longer to trust him. As a parent and an officer of the law, he has difficulty adjusting to the fact that a grown man is helping his kid fight other grown-ass adults. Jeff doesn't give a hoot that Johnathon can travel across dimensions and create holes to teleport wherever he pleases. Miles should be in school preparing for his future or at home safe with his REAL family, not putting himself in danger. The one good thing from all this is that Johnathon is upfront with him and Rio about their crimefighting shenanigans, keeps them both informed about their location and helps Miles with his homework.
-) Jefferson and Rio hate the pair's dimension travels, but so far, Johnathon hasn't taken Miles anywhere too dangerous and kept their travels safe. One time, Jeff went on a trip with Miles and Johnathon to observe, and surprisingly enough, he had a great time.
"So, this is Cyberpunk Brooklyn?"
"Of course! Miles and I stop by here all the time to shop for the latest clothes and goobers! Do you like it?"
"Huh... Johnathon, could you do me a favor and see if you can find a men's boutique in this area? I want a coat that glows in the dark."
-) One time, Johnathon and Miles built a plasma raygun using ancient tech they scavenged from an eldritch alien dimension, and during a test exercise, the weapon malfunctioned and melted half of their lair. Needless to say, Johnathon immediately disassembled the weapon and tucked it away where not even Miles could find it.
"Come on, Unc! Maybe we could use the parts to build something else!"
"No can do, kiddo. You're lucky the darn thing only managed to melt the walls into goo. We'll just build something safer...like a pen."
"..."
"What? You'd be the first kid in Brooklyn to own a pen made out of alien tech! Isn't that exciting?"

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks: How and when to see the 'Devil Comet'
A Mount Everest-sized ‘devil’ comet making its first visit to the inner solar system in more than 70 years could be visible to the naked eye over the next few weeks.
The once or possibly twice-in-a-lifetime object, known as 12P/Pons-Brooks, is due to make its closest approach to the Sun on 21 April, which is when it will be at its brightest.
For those in the northern hemisphere, the Halley-type comet is likely to be at its best visibility-wise between now and mid-April, although it won’t be the easiest to spot.
“Don’t expect it to be dazzlingly bright - the kind of image you see in photographs. It’s not going to be like that,” Dr Robert Massey, deputy executive director at the Royal Astronomical Society, said in a video explainer.
“This is something that might just be visible to the naked eye if you don’t have a Moon in the sky, if there’s no light pollution and if the weather is really clear, then you might stand a chance.
“But for most of us, we’re going to need to pick up a pair of binoculars.”
He added: “Ideally, look at one of the apps you can get on your phone, showing you where things are in the sky, or a finder chart of some kind. That’ll really help you to track it down.
“And when you see it, it’s likely to look like a sort of small, greyish fuzz, quite typical for many comets.
“But you will have the satisfaction of knowing you’ve seen this once-in-a-lifetime object.”
Dr Massey said stargazers should look to the west-north-west after sunset to catch a glimpse of Pons-Brooks, which completes its orbit once every 71.3 years and therefore won’t be visible again until 2095.
The icy body, which is thought to have a nucleus about 34km (21 miles) in diameter, was recognised as a comet in 1812. However, it was seen as far back as the 14th century.
It is named after the French astronomer Jean-Louis Pons - who discovered it in the early 19th century - and British-American astronomer William Robert Brooks, who observed it on its next orbit in 1883.
There has been plenty of interest and excitement about Pons-Brooks over the past few months, driven in part by a couple of unusual features.
Firstly, photographs of its approach have captured the comet’s “curious” green colour.
“That’s because it has a molecule called dicarbon,” Dr Massey explained. “What that does is it absorbs sunlight and re-radiates some of it with that characteristic green tinge.”
The other attribute that has piqued the interest of observers worldwide is its occasional "horned appearance”, earning Pons-Brooks the nickname “Devil Comet”.
The reason these pointy horn shapes appear is because the icy object is classed as a cryovolcanic comet, meaning it regularly erupts with dust, gases and ice when pressure builds inside it as it is heated.

Obituaries can't be for their subject (they're gone, and despite his name, Chompsky couldn't even read) so I guess that means they're for us. I'm trying to capture some sense of what this wonderful beast was like, trying to share both the best and worst parts of him so they can live on a little longer in all of us, and it's impossible. Can't be done! That's why we cry when people die instead of bustin' out their obits and saying "Look, it's just as good!"
That said, he was great, and I want to try.
So how about this:
***
He didn't have a name, and we were at least his third home.
On their website of adoptable dogs, Toronto Animal Services called him something like "Dog A315391". When we went in to meet him, they told us all they knew about him was that someone had come in wanting to surrender him earlier that month. Toronto Animal Services isn't the Humane Society and they don't do surrenders - they're more the "government agency you call to handle wild animals or dogs at large" people - but another member of the public was there looking for a dog, and the two of them made a deal for him right there in the parking lot.
It must not have worked out, because a week later Toronto Animal Services picked him up as a stray.
We took him home, and we named him Chompsky.

***
"Separation anxiety" is when a dog is afraid of being alone, and for a dog on his third family, in retrospect it wasn't surprising that Chompsky suffered greatly from it. He followed us from room to room, and he'd only stop crying that first night if I was touching him, so I slept on the floor, my hand on his paw until morning.
He didn't leave our sides for the next six weeks.
Jenn had to go to work during the day, but one of the perks of being a cartoonist was I could be with him 24/7 to help him work on his problem. Initially it was so bad that I'd have to give him a marrow bone - the highest-value treat I had - just to have a shower: he'd be done with it in three minutes, but if I was fast, I could be finished showering by then too.
After tons of exercises and practice, we got to the point where Chompsky was ready for his greatest test: being left alone for three hours. (Our trainer told us that anything three hours and up is just "a long time" for a dog, so if you can hit three, you're golden.) That first time we gave him a bone, but shortly afterwards we began giving him a meat stick instead: a special treat that he only got when we were going to be apart for a little while, our way of telling him it was fine to go snooze for a bit, because we were promising to return.  In any case, we left, and when we came back three hours later, Chompsky got up from his mat sleepy-eyed, yawned and stretched, and came over to say hello. He'd never fully conquer his fear of being abandoned, but he'd learned to manage it.
In the end that touch of separation anxiety was a benefit: it meant he was never a dog who'd run away at the dog park - a whistle or calling his name was usually enough to get him to come bounding back.  And on the occasions where he didn't want to leave, where he'd hold back, keeping us in eyesight but wanting to stay and play for as long as possible - I took it as a compliment, as proof of how far he'd come. Our little guy.
Tumblr media
***
He was the belle of the ball at the dog park, because he was a dog who'd play with anyone, scaling his play down for little dogs a quarter of his size and up for larger dogs.  He was just endlessly happy to be there every day, to run around and chase and herd and wrestle.  His best friend at the park was Miles, and whenever they were both there at the same time, they would wrestle for so long that they'd both end up exhausted, lying beside each other, trying to invent new ways to wrestle while lying on their backs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He loved people, and if you loved him back, it was just an endless loop of the two of you being excited to see each other.  And he was obviously super subtle about his affection:

Here's the only trick Chompsky came with: sit.
Here's some of the tricks we taught Chompsky: stay, lie down, chill, stand up, dance, come, backup, leave it, release, drop it, pick it up, sit pretty, left, right, shake, high five, high ten, go pee, spin, play dead, roll over, fetch, touch, on your mat, bow, up top, crawl, find it, catch, in the car, go see Jenn, and go see Ryan.
Here's some of the tricks Chompsky taught himself:
the apparently-distinctive way I'd say "okay, let's go" before getting up to leave the house which was thus a secret harbinger of walks
how to go for walks in such a way that his photo ends up in The Guardian
how to be an alarm clock for overnight guests
how to befriend local ice fishers in order to steal their fish when they weren't looking
then he did it a second time, oh my god
after that we stopped letting him go off-leash around Ontario's overly-trusting fisherfolk
Tumblr media
***
Like most dogs who spend time outdoors in Ontario, he had a few run-ins with skunks and porcupines.  The skunk encounter only happened once (thankfully, since it meant we both had to sleep in the garage), but he got slapped by his spikey friends several times. The first few times it happened I thought "oh wow he really got lucky!" because it was only ever just his nose. Then I realized it was his shagginess that was keeping him safe! Quills couldn't get through all his that fur, so it was just his nose (and sometimes between his toes) where he could get hit.  Anyway he never learned his lesson and enjoyed getting treats while we pulled them out, and also the porcupines never learned anything either. Nobody learned anything and everyone had a great time except for me and Jenn, the end
Tumblr media
***
When we got him he loved to countersurf, getting up on those hind legs and see if there was anything he could grab from the counter.  We did what we could to train it out of him with positive reinforcement, and that - along with keeping our counters clean - helped!  He wouldn't do it when we were in the room, but if we were in someone else's house - and especially if we were out of the room in someone else's house - he could spot an opportunity and go for it.  One time he pulled a whole Thanksgiving turkey off my parent's kitchen counter (he only got one chomp mark in the leg before we stopped him and then ate it anyway, it was still good), another time he ate so many peanuts from a tin he stole off the counter that his poops the next day were, and it brings me no joy to say this, exactly like what you see in your mind's eye when I say the phrase "Snickers: Oops, All Peanuts", and once he ate an entire pound of butter which actually gave his coat a delightful sheen but we still didn't let him do it again.
Tumblr media
***
Two weeks before he passed, I brought him to a dog park, hoping he'd poop.  It was a few days before the vet would tell us he had a very aggressive melanoma in his bowels, which was blocking him up and causing him pain - at first we just thought he was constipated and were changing his diet to softer, wetter foods. On this visit to the park, he tried several times to poop without success, but even in all that, and as uncomfortable as he was, he still picked out a complete stranger and sat down beside her. She gave him some pets, he leaned into it, and within a minute she'd crouched down and the two of them were like this:
Tumblr media
That was just who Chompsky was, making friends wherever he went. (After his diagnosis, he would finally poop on my birthday, and that bowel movement - and the laxatives he was on to make his stool soft so he wouldn't get backed up again - gave us our last perfect week together, where he didn't have to suffer. In other words, yes, a week's worth of hot-off-the-presses dog poop was my favourite birthday present this year.)
Tumblr media
***
This last one is sad.
Last week, we brought him to a cottage, and spent all our time together.  We went on big hikes, he ran and played and got special food and his own steak dinner and breakfast and everything else he wanted.  The vet was coming Wednesday at 2pm.
Wednesday morning was perfect.  October can get cold, but it was an unseasonably warm day - perfect weather for Chompskys.  We got up early, and walked out to the lake, where the sun was taking its time burning off the fog, and things were just were effortlessly spectacular.  He fetched sticks in the lake and played tug with us on the shore, and then we all walked home.
Tumblr media
We hung out and did what we could to keep it together ourselves so that Chompsky wouldn't worry about us.  Time moved slowly and quickly and not at all.
Tumblr media
He passed away outdoors, in the afternoon sun.  While he was falling asleep, we petted him and told him he was a good dog, a good boy, and we gave him treats - including meat sticks.  It was the treat he only ever got when we left him home alone, our way of telling him "we're going to be apart for a little while, Chompsky, but we promise it won't be forever."
A few minutes later, he was gone.

can I say something controversial after we just got done celebrating miles and Alex reuniting?
I think Milex is a cute ship, it is, they are an adorable pair. their chemistry is very sweet and they are like soulmates you can tell, be that platonic or not in y'alls opinions. I personally don't ship it (always been a mattlex girly myself, platonically talking). I do feel at times y'all do focus on the wrong thing with Miles and Alex. some of you lot love defending Miles and how he doesn't deserve to just be associated with Alex but please and I beg you, tell me truthfully you know Miles from his solo work and not from TLSP. there's few of us, I think Miles is great and his music is good, I saw him before AM live FFS but no I wouldn't know Miles without Alex. It's just a thing that will always exist and it's unfortunate I know but it's true. I also think documenting and cherry picking at specific moments that have literally no correlation at all to milex romantic moments and making them oddly sexual is fucking odd. like I'll give you the d, I wish you would: that's an innuendo, that's funny and you can make that sexual cuz they did. they act like an old married couple at times. the lentils joke about their bad habits for example, it's cute and domestic. it's fic material. I understand that, trust me but like sometimes they are just on coke and giggling like little boys over like bringing bread and crumpets to the studio and that's not an allegory for fucking each other (an actual real post someone made). please it's odd and fetishism of two men who are straight. I understand that being gay is still a taboo subject for some people from more oppressive countries and maybe at 14 when you found AM, milex was your first introduction to shipping culture and men being shipped together, that would be exciting to you. However the nuances of that is that it can cross a line to a degree where you aren't respecting the two real people. I was in the Dan and Phil fandom before they came out and we had an era called 2012 where Dan especially was on the defense constantly to a point where it was a taboo to us to talk about but through time, that defense became more empathetic with them coming out. we all grew up and that behaviour from when we were kids was not ok anymore and that frustration was valid. I have many straight friends who have felt that pressure to be part of the LGBT community in order to not be shamed and on the flip side, I don't even need to tell you how hard it is still for lgbtqia people to want to hide in the closet with all the problems we still as a society have to face.
what I'm trying to say is, these are straight men and it's ok for straight men to be affectionate with their friends, I know it may still be frowned upon in some cultures but we wouldn't have am without a close bond between the lads. we wouldn't have TLSP without miles and Alex being best friends. i don't think milex is wrong, plz do what you want, draw your porn art if you want, write fics upon fics but plz just think about why this makes you so happy and understand the true consequences on what you say because you could be upsetting the gay community around you by being elated that miles can kiss his friend on the cheek. let boys love each other platonically or not, it doesn't matter. If Alex or Miles came out tomorrow, I'd support them, it's just something to think about.
Plus it's ok for teenagers and younger people to see what the boys do and want that, that's valid and I hope you have fun. There's a point where you may realise that something you said was a kid that you don't agree with and that's part of growing up, I know (hence the dnp rant). I see this now as an adult and think of that as crossing a line by prying at someone's sexuality cuz that's not mine to know and I don't know that person in real life. However if you are like a long time monkeys fan in your late 20s, early 30s, please consider what you're doing and re-evaluate what this means to you because maybe it's not just Alex and Miles that make you feel this way and that's not healthy: that's a parasocial relationship you've held for so long you don't know any different.

What peni's role will be in beyond the spiderverse perhaps beyond will do for peni like what across did for Gwen?
Hmmmm, good question…
Personally, I don’t think it’ll be much more prominent than her role in ITSV, especially now that the team is Bigger. She’ll likely be paired with Margo for tech stuff and then of course probably fall back with Noir and Ham during combat. Spider-Verse has that very fun thing I love in voice direction where it lets the VAs talk over each other and stuff so there’ll probably be a lot of that happening since Spideys are Naturally Chatty. Maybe there’ll also be a convo between Miles and Peni about her dad and how she’ll do everything she can to help Miles save his dad because he has the Chance To. Also Also!! I’m SO excited for whatever action scenes they’re cooking up cuz the team up sequences are Literally some of my Favorite parts of the films and it’ll be awesome seeing the new SP//dr suit in action!!
Now, if you’re asking me my take on how Peni could have a larger role in BTSV, we can dig into it a little.
Imagine the film opening on a computer screen, running calculations after calculations that keep being Rejected. A lone girl is working on a mech, slapping silly stickers where she wants to and letting a Spider crawl around her arms and pointing to equipment and tools she needs. A PA crackles and calls SP//dr to action.
The girl finishes up what she’s doing as Spider skitters to his spot in the mech to start it up. Putting aside the equipment, the girl listens as a man, her Uncle Ben, informs her of the situation. She climbs into the mech, stares for a moment at the computer still rejecting calculations, and lets the hatch close shut.
The console lights up. Music plays, techno pop, the volume low at first as SP//dr swings through the city and confronts a Baddie. All the while, a narration plays:
“My name is Peni Parker. When I was 9, I was bitten by Spider and followed in my father’s footsteps to become SP//dr. I didn’t know he was a hero until the day he died. He was just there, one day, and gone the next and then I met my Aunt May and Uncle Ben for the first time, and they gave me a Choice.
“To be honest, it hadn’t really felt like one.
“I made it work. I had to. What would Oscorp do without its best asset! I did everything I had to and More. I had Ben and May and Spider and that was it. I was alone.
“And then I wasn’t.”
Cuts of ISTV of Peni with everyone.
“Five other Spiders!! And the potential for so many more.”
Cut to Peni returning to her dimension and rebuilding SP//dr. Her working on how to dimension hop willingly. Her meeting Addy and eventually becoming friends.
Her going out with Addy for VE#m’s first real field mission. Her having to Fight VE#m as her Aunt May enters the mech to rescue Addy.
Her opening the mech after the fight and realizing it’s Too Late.
Her huddled on her bed with Spider and going over how to rebuild SP//dr Again.
Then, a portal opens, and Gwen steps out and finally (Finally) Peni isn’t alone again.
“The Spider Society. I thought it was everything we needed. But…”
Canon Events are explained to her. She sees the endless row of Spiders huddling over their dying loved ones and sees herself standing quietly over her father’s grave. She hadn't been with him during his last moments. He’d taken her camping the week before he died and the last thing he’d said to her after dropping her off at school was that “things will be different soon. Better.”
The last words she’d heard from Addy and her Aunt had been of terror. Not goodbyes.
And I’ve mentioned this before, but at first Peni rejects the idea that Things have to go a Certain Way. Cut to her computer that continues reject calculations. Cut to her as techno pop roars and she beats the Baddie.
She gets a message from HQ. Miles has finally (temporarily) been allowed in. They’re going to Explain, and she should be there to help Soften the Blow.
Peni knows it’s not gonna work, but she goes anyways because Miles is her Friend.
“…I was wrong.”
Miles explodes containment with his venom. SP//dr takes a moment too long to right itself and everyone else is already in hot pursuit. She lags behind and eventually stands in the Go Home room and watches Miles escape and Gwen call the Society out.
Peni shares a look with Peter B, with Margo, and then leaves for her dimension. She rips her watch off her wrist and throws it on her workbench as she turns to her computer.
She enters in a new calculation, something she hadn’t thought of before.
Miles was a factor she’d never considered.
The computer hums as Peni fiddles with a different watch with Spider. A “just in case” machine that Hobie had suggested in passing one day.
She slaps it on as a chaotic portal opens up and Gwen waits for her. Peni grabs her jacket and drapes it over her shoulders as she climbs into SP//dr.
The computer beeps.
A probability. A Chance.
Peni smiles and follows after Gwen.
(Imagine Peni handing Miles a new set off web shooters as he adjusts a punk rock dimensional watch on his wrist. She lingers in the moment and tells Miles that if she’d had a chance to save her loved ones, she’d have taken it and done everything she could. She tells him that he’s got the chance and the probability for success is Low, but when has that Ever stopped a Spidey from Trying?
Imagine her confronting Miguel as they hold him down from making Another Mistake. Lyla going over the calculation herself and agreeing. And Peni opening up her mech to look into the eyes of a still mourning father reflected in her gaze as a mourning daughter. “There’s Hope, Miguel. It doesn’t have to be this way.”
And imagine her at the end of it all, coordinating with other tech Spideys to Prevent Tragedies. They’re the good guys. They’re supposed to Help People and they will and they are and This is the feeling of Togetherness Peni was chasing and has finally Caught.)

Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1 Spoiler-Filled Review
Tumblr media
Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1, also known as Justice League x RWBY, RWBY x Justice League, or JLxRWBY for short, is an anime-inspired science fantasy action-adventure film, bringing together characters from the Justice League and those from the young adult animated series, RWBY. The latter is the flagship series of Rooster Teeth and began airing in 2013. It recently concluded its ninth season. This film was written by Meghan Fitzmartin and directed by Kerry Shawcross.
Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs and Wayback Machine. This was the thirty-second article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on April 30, 2023.
This 83-minute film begins with Superman's unexpected arrival on Remnant, since he has no idea how he ended up there. In classic crossover fashion, seven of the classic Justice League characters, find themselves in Remnant as teenagers. Soon enough the huntresses of Remnant, specifically Ruby Rose, Blake Belladonna, Weiss Schnee, and Yang Xiao Long, and their friends, work with them to learn why their planet has changed and stop a Grimm monster from destroying all that exists. Ruby, Blake, Weiss, and Yang all have superpowers of sorts, known as semblances, each unique to themselves.
I was intrigued by this film as an avid fan of RWBY and occasional watcher of superhero series like DC Super Hero Girls, Young Justice, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Stretch Armstrong and the Flex Fighters, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Birdgirl, Harley Quinn, Hamster & Gretel, Gotham Girls, Masters of the Universe: Revelation, and She-Ra: Princess of Power. My interest in the classic superheroish magical girl anime Sailor Moon and the superheroish action series such as Sym-Bionic Titan, My Life as a Teenage Robot, and OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes, further made me want to watch this film. My excitement remained even after learning that the film takes place in the first half of RWBY's Volume 7.
There are differences from RWBY. For instance, Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1, Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang wear the outfits they donned in Vale, while Weiss can master her summoning of Glyphs, Nora wears the same outfit she wore in Beacon Academy, and the CCT tower at Beacon isn't destroyed, but is active. This is all because this film takes place in an alternate universe of sorts. That makes sense as it is a crossover film which has the same voice actors as the original RWBY series. One difference is Tiana Camacho, who voices Glynda in the RWBY original anime spinoff, RWBY: Ice Queendom.
It was nice to see Ruby, Weiss, Blake, Yang, Juane Arc, Pyrrha Nikos, and Lie Ren, the latter three part of team JNR, interacting with members of the Justice League such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman/Diana, Green Lantern/Jessica, Vixen, Cyborg, and The Flash. In the RWBY show proper Ozpin has been reincarnated as Oscar, other characters have either died, like Jacques Schnee (presumably in Volume 8), or haven't appeared in the show recently, like Glynda or Kali Belladonna. They return in this film.
Two other characters also appear: Adam Taurus and Sienna Khan. Adam Taurus was Blake's abusive boyfriend. Sienna Khan was killed by Adam to take control of the White Fang, a peaceful organization originally aimed at improving conditions for the Faunus, a group of people with animal traits. Taurus aimed to change the latter organization into a violent terrorist organization which would overthrow human society and replace it with a Faunus-led one. In Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1, the latter two characters are only shown in a flashback when Blake remembers back to what actually happened during the series.
Apart from the voice actors for the RWBY characters, like Arryn Zech, Blake Dunkelman, Lindsay Jones, Kara Eberle, Miles Luna, Samantha Ireland, and Neath Oum, those who voice the members of the Justice League (Chandler Riggs, Nat Wolff, Natalie Alyn Lind, David Errigo Jr., Jeannie Tirado, Tru Valentino, and Ozioma Akagha) are just as talented. Riggs (who voices Superman) is known for his role as Carl Grimes in The Walking Dead. Wolff, the voice of Batman, has been recognized for his music, and roles in films like Paper Towns, The Fault in Our Stars, and Ashby. Lind, the voice of Wonder Woman in this film, is known for various television appearances including as Danielle Sullivan in Big Sky.
Errigo Jr., voice of The Flash, has previously done voice work in Ridley Jones, The Casagrandes, Milo Murphy's Law, and Dota: Dragon's Blood. Tirado, voicing Green Lantern, has lent her voice to characters in dubs of Fairy Tail Zero, KanColle: Kantai Collection, and Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Tru Valentino, who voices Cyborg, is known for his voice work in Madagascar: A Little Wild, Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight, and Spidey and His Amazing Friends.
I personally remember Valentino best for his role as Cuphead in the short-lived animated slapstick comedy, The Cuphead Show. Finally, Arkagha, who voices Vixen, is best known for her acting as Harper Omereoha in Delilah, and her voice acting as Shuri in What If...? and Bumblebee in Teen Titans Go!, to name a few roles.

Admittedly, I wasn't sure about Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1 at first. Surely, the fight scenes and the character designs were good, but was uneasy about the plot, even when Superman got on the scene at the film's beginning. However, the film drew me in, beginning with Grimm glitching out of control when killed, all while they still retain their goal, as soulless creatures, to destroy humanity, which as Nora puts it at one point in the film.
The humor of the characters, especially of Yang, lightened the mood. For example, Yang scoffs at the idea she will call Superman by his name, causing him to admit they can call him "Clark" (as in Clark Kent) instead. It was also funny that when Batman/Bruce Wayne fights people in the Schnee mansion, a person is playing the piano during his fight.
The fracturing and scrambling of memory, causing the characters to be confused about what actually happened, is at the crux of the Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1. It causes people, such as Ozpin, to appear, glitch into Oscar, and disappear, or others like Blake's mom, Kali, to say strange things. Some try and figure out the reality of their present predicament. Batman/Bruce Wayne, attempts this, but gets imprisoned. Others realize something is wrong, but are unsure what to do about it.
There is even a sub-theme about the power of privilege. Weiss criticizes her father, Jacques, of the ever-powerful Schnee family, for having a party rather than not repairing the CCT Tower. This bonds Weiss and Batman/Bruce Wayne together, as he says that the wealthy don't care about the plights of other people in any universe.
As would be expected, there are disagreements between heroes, with Blake and Yang annoyed that the Justice League is trying to tell them what to do, and vice versa. In fact, in a harsh scene which resonates with those who saw Volume 9, Cyborg asks Ruby who she is and she doesn't know. Although Superman says it is difficult to be a leader, he later questions her as team leader, which does not help her confidence! Even so, when Kilgore declares that Ruby is a child who is trying to be a leader, Superman reassures her, saying leadership isn't about age, but about your heart. He adds that although people will inevitably freeze and fail, that's what makes you human. The latter is a hint at the theme of self-acceptance enshrined throughout RWBY's Volume 9.
In the end, Team RWBY, Team JNR, and Justice League all work together, either by examining at holographic maps or tapping into their superpowers/semblances to fight the Grimm and save the day. Their fight is complicated by the fact that these Grimm are not ordinary, but can reboot, until they are electrocuted. This means that Ruby can't use her silver eyes, her ultimate "weapon".
This road to victory is not necessarily a simple one. One theme of Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1 is that people lose something which is a part of them. For Vixen, her necklace is missing, and for Jessica, she lost her all-powerful Green Lantern ring. In the case of the latter, it seems she is having issues tapping into her powers at first.
What stole the show in this film was Juane offering to help her, showing care, patience, and understanding in the process. Ger power is trapped, and she can't access it. Jessica says the ring grounds her, stating it is a symbol of power, belonging, and control. Hence, without it, she feels unmoored and listless, like a ship drifting across the open sea. This reminds me of how Adora felt in the final season of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, when she felt completely lost after the Sword of Protection was shattered, and even questioned whether she could help her friends. Coming back to this film, Juane tells her that her ring gets the truth of things and the truth of her, again trying to help her center herself.
At the same time, the film provides subtle hints to the trauma the characters have experienced in the past. Cyborg says at one point "what, you haven't learned to adapt thanks to childhood trauma?". Canonically, in the Marvel universe, Jessica experienced trauma herself as a kid. As such, the film's writers were not above retraumatizing the characters. For example, a person who looks like Pyrrha tricks Juane, and traps him, with Jessica, in a box, while warning them to not warn the Justice League about the reality. Juane is further affected when the Seer causes him to see Pyrrha's death, paralyzing him.
After Juane had already experienced the death of Pyrrha second-hand (Ruby saw it first-hand), seeing her in front of him caused him to lose all reason, and trust her. This isn't a surprise after all he has been through, so no one can hold it against him. It was good writing to have Juane tell Jessica about Pyrrha and still be able to help Jessica be more than her fear. In a powerful statement which is often not stated in fiction, he tells her it is fine to have anxiety flare-ups and implies she shouldn't be ashamed of them. All of this helps encourage Jessica to use her green lantern power to help them escape.
youtube
Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1 hints at the ship-of-sorts between Jessica and Juane, which could be called "Greenknight", overriding any interest Juane had in Vixen, who he seemed taken in by, at first. The film also implies there is a ship between Batman and Weiss. In fact, Weiss states various times that Batman should stay. This could very well mean that she has romantic feelings for him. Their collaboration is an important part of the film, as both work together at an Atlas' computer lab to learn the reality of the world and why everything is glitching.
Funny enough, Diana is jealous of how close Weiss and Batman are getting. It could be part of the reason she wants to pull him back to "his" world. The writing of Diana, Weiss, and Batman in the film is good. It better than what some would claim, as it is clear that a Batman and Weiss ship, at least in the forms shown in the film, is possible. Otherwise, Weiss and Batman can fight well together, even when faced with impossible odds.
While it is not directly stated, there is queer subtext between Blake and Yang. In the show proper, both are in a relationship, mutually confessing their romantic feelings in the Volume 9 episode "Confessions Within Cumulonimbus Clouds". The ship between both, known as Bumbleby, had been semi-canon before that point, but was not canonized until that episode. In the film itself, Yang hugs Blake happily, Blake gives Yang the side-eye when she describes Diana "very strong", and Blake agrees to go along with Diana to Atlas because she is jealous. Still, Blake puts this aside and fight alongside her against the Grimm while flying through the air.
At other points in Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1, Blake and Yang look at one another, with Blake explaining how she and Yang got to know each other. Furthermore, Yang worries about Blake after she talks about losing people. In a very touching scene in the film, Blake and Yang touch each other's hands through the cockpit window, with Yang saying she trusts Blake, while she pilots the aircraft. In the meantime, Blake puts aside her jealousy so she can fight alongside Diana against the Grimm even as she flies through the air.
Toward the end of the film, after Diana says she knows it is hard to fight under fire, Blake says that it is nice to kiss ass and bumps her ass with Yang. As Yang's voice actor stated in watch party for the series, "how did anyone ever think Yang was straight". Although it has not be directly confirmed, fans have stated that Yang is a lesbian. Blake was previously confirmed as bisexual. As Shawcross put it, Bumbleby moments were added because it was something the crew liked and said the moments. He also stated that "Blake and Yang had a lot that they could talk [about] with and relate to with Diana, Wonder Woman". The latter may have been a reference to past comments by those who say that Wonder Woman is a bisexual icon, later confirmed by writer Greg Rucka.
The last battle of Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1, which involves riding on bikes, and tag-team fighting (like Yang and Blake), is one of the film's strongest. In a hint at what may happen in the second part of the film crossover series, it is clear that a villain named Kilgore, who created a virtual reality by mind-controlling The Flash, is also stuck there. As such, it is implied that someone else is controlling him, although it isn't clear who.
His plan to make the Justice League into teens, when they are "vulnerable", have the world rip them apart, and cause them to deal with emotions they ignore or regress as adults seems like a weak plan. He could have, just as easily, imprisoned them on their own world, instead of Remnant. The hubris of Kilgore is what takes him down. Jessica uses the equivalent of Ruby's silver eyes on the Grimm dragon, which has Kilgore inside, causing him to almost fade from existence.
Although everyone says their goodbyes and they all go back to their respective worlds, it is clear this isn't the end. All of the main cast, which are not part of the Justice League, wake up from what was supposed to be a training mission. Ruby's concern that someone created the virtual reality/simulation, a person from their world, setting the stage for the next film.
All in all, animation of Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1 is well-done, and the designs are very colorful. There are even features that make it seem like a comic book, such as talk bubbles when characters are annoyed, and other expressions. All of the flowing animation which goes easily with the storytelling, voice acting, and the like, is no surprise as over 210 people, if not more, worked on this film. That makes it an even bigger effort than a volume of RWBY!
youtube
Unfortunately, Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1 was effectively spoiled on social media before its release, in part because it accidentally aired early on Redbox on April 20, five days before its general release. This made animators ask fans to not post spoilers until the film came out, or say they feel "pretty hurt" by people posting clips from the entire film before its release on April 25th. On the positive side, this interest will undoubtedly help support Volume 10 for RWBY, so that the show's characters can have their stories continued, even if reported review bombing on IMDB continues.
The film was available on Google Play, but was later taken down for unexplained reasons. Although the stock of Rooster Teeth's parent company (Warner Bros. Discovery) has been falling, thanks to the rebranding of HBO streaming platform, and debt continues to accumulate, the film survived the cuts. That is for the best.
Adding onto what I've said so far about the film, I personally liked the design of characters like Jessica, whether you consider her gender non-conforming or not, the White Rose scenes of sorts, Weiss summoning powerful glyphs, and it is a lot of fun. Perhaps, there will be future RWBY features in the future which are not crossovers.
In certain ways, this film made me think of Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night, which I reviewed earlier this year, as it is also set in a virtual reality. In this film, the characters are forced into a virtual reality, while in Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night, I believe they chose to be in that reality.
Hopefully, in the second part of film crossover series, Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part Two, which may come out in the summer, there is more character exploration of Superman, Batman, Diana, and Vixen. This film focused on the internal struggles of Jessica more than the other Justice League members. It would be great to see a focus on the mental struggles of the other Justice League members as well. I would not be surprised if there are additional scenes with ships such as Bumbleby, Greenknight, and Weiss/Batman, since this film set the groundwork for the next one.
As a final note, although David Levy, who has long worked on RWBY, and on series such as Red vs. Blue, Camp Camp, various bands, and independent films, does a decent job with the film's music, it isn't that memorable. Maybe, Casey Lee Williams could either compose the music score of the next film, or at least a few tracks. That would ensure that the film packed an extra punch.
Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1 can be purchased or rented on Prime Video, MoviesAnywhere, iTunes/Apple TV+, Redbox, and Vudu, or have the DVD and Blu-ray ordered from other online marketplaces.

I was super-excited to see that the best Spider-Man movie was getting a sequel, and that they were going all-out on the multiverse. Because what really set Into the Spider-Verse apart was not just its outstanding story, but the way it told it, using unique animation style to not only play with the notion that it’s a comic book adaptation, but that it’s a story featuring multiple dimensions with different feels to them.
Miles is back! It’s been a year since his last adventure, and he misses his multiversal friends. He’s trying to figure out his direction in life when Gwen comes and visits, revealing that she has been recruited to an elite group of Spider-People from all over the Spider-Verse dedicated to protecting all realities. When a new villain of Miles’s, the Spot, leaks into the Spider-Verse, Miles follows and discovers the Spider Society, a specific rule of life for Spider-People across the multiverse that brings him into conflict with the Society’s leader, Spider-Man 2099–Miguel O’Hara.
An idea which is far from tested: I think animation is the best way to tell a multiverse story. A lot of live-action attempts to depict the multiverse don’t really do much, aesthetically, with different universes. The Flash television series did try for a little bit, but as the multiverse kept expanding, they mostly gave up with obvious visual differences. Not so here! Each universe has a different animation style, design, color palette, and musical choices, and it all stands out more because it’s animated.
[I suppose Multiverse of Madness does do some ‘Different universes look different’ thing, but those changes are really weird, bizarre things like garish colors and outer architecture in the city, rather than just…. stylistic differences. It didn’t work as well for me.]
Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman is given quite a bit more focus in this story. She has a story in the first movie, but this one has a much more developed subplot about Gwen. The opening of the movie is actually about Gwen, which makes a nice change of pace because we don’t have the female character exist only to prop up the male lead–something still frustratingly common in modern Hollywood.
Miles is still the main character, and he has an incredibly strong story for the film. There’s a subtext about how his attempts to find acceptance with the other Spider-People mirrors the fan reaction to the character’s introduction to the comics (and many other characters to many other fandoms!). The last movie emphasized that anyone can be Spider-Man; this movie helps to cement that Miles, specifically, has every right to be Spider-Man, and have his own place among the greatest versions of the character.
I suspect that in the crowds of Spider-People, different audience members will pick favorites. I was surprised, for instance, about how much  I got attached to Spider-Punk? He’s loads of fun, though like Miles himself, I had some trouble understanding what he’s saying when he first appears on screen.
Truthfully, it’s downright INCREDIBLE how many different iterations of Spider-Man make it into the movie. When Sony released the trailers, different news sites had articles and slideshows displaying how so many of the Spider-People appearing in those shots were actually drawn from different comics, shows, and games. While most of them don’t have major roles in the film itself, that they’re THERE, and the makers of the film knew about them at all, is incredibly impressive.
I do have the issue though about their inclusion, though. Part of what sets up the conflict of the movie is how Miles differs with what he’s willing to go along with as part of what it means to be Spider-Man. While it’s a great story point, it does seem off that all of these versions of Spider-Man are also fine with Miguel O’Hara’s vision of how things should be done. It IS for the good of the multiverse, to be fair, but that Miguel can call all of them to attack Miles and they just do it without question doesn’t feel quite right for what we know of Spider-Man.
The Spot is a strange choice for a villain for the movie. Not only is he not a particularly well-known comic character, he’s very silly through most of his appearances in the film. That doesn’t mean he’s a bad villain though, and despite being humorous for a lot of his screen time, it’s clear that no one taking him seriously is part of what motivates him to become more of a monster. He’s a joke villain, and it infuriates him, especially because he’s so connected to Miles’s story.
Something that you need to be aware of when watching the movie! This is a cliffhanger. Across the Spider-Verse was originally going to carry the subtitle ‘Part One’, and while the next film (expected for release next year, don’t fret!) has been re-titled Beyond the Spider-Verse, it’s still a two-part film. If you were like me, you might spend a large portion of the movie wondering if THIS was the dramatic moment that would be the point where the movie cuts off for the sequel. And that can get kind of annoying.
[Also there’s no after credits scene.]
This movie is fantastic, but it’s also weirdly complex, and I strongly suspect that I should view it two or three more times to begin to get everything about it. It’s a film that certainly lends itself well to discussion and analysis. Although I don’t think it’s as good as the first movie, that’s more because it’s the first part of a story rather than a standalone installment. When the sequel drops next year, we’ll have at least slightly different ideas about THIS movie, but given the quality of the film, I eagerly anticipate all the things we’ll see and learn, and we can see how they all stack up against each other.

Yes yes yes to your Miguel and Peter b's relationship analysis. Also I rewatched ITSV recently and I just want to say, when Peter said he'd stay behind (and glitch to death) because someone has to do it, and I'm like, "thats so Miguel!!" And I'm thinking, Migs been watching a livestream of ITSV, do you think he saw that moment. Do you think he saw that and thought Peter was someone like him, and so Peter was among the early recruits?? Do you get me (I hope I make sense, I'm too excited thanks
Yeah you makes sense dw :D! Honestly it could be the case! I personally assume Miguel dimension dips relatively early into the timeskip (1-3months) because his gripes with Miles are in big part rooted in what he comes to believe post that trauma, and I think otherwise Peter would’ve just visited Miles or Gwen at the very least. Seeing as how Peter is one of only a couple spideys trying to save people from the dimension, I personally think he would’ve been one of the first couple ones recruited to the Society too!

"Cetaganda"--A Review
Another entry in the Vorkosigan Saga, once again, I find myself just enjoying the hell out of these books. I've been chewing through them on Audible and I don't know what it is, but they seem to be like perfect comfort listens. (Currently, my Audible features 'The Name of the WInd' by Patrick Rothfuss which is great so far, but with ninety-four chapters it's a bit time-consuming.) Vorkosigan books though: I race through those on Audible.
Cetaganda is another solid entry in the series and finally introduces the oft-talked about, but never actually seen Cetagandan Empire. Miles and his cousin Ivan have been sent to the Cetagandan Homeworld to represent Barrayar at the funeral of the Dowager Emperess Lisbet, the mother of the current emperor, Fletchir Giaja. Miles being Miles and this being a Vorkosigan Novel, he gets sucked into an internal Cetagandan plot involving the intricate social class structure of the empire.
The Cetagandans have three levels: the Haut (overclass), the ghem (warriors), and the ba, (sexless servants to the haut)-- Miles and Ivan, upon their arrival are bum-rushed by a ba who attempts to storm their spaceship before drops a weapon and an artifact of some kind before fleeing. Miles keeps this to himself and starts a quiet investigation to figure out what, exactly, they may have gotten themselves into.
Things are further complicated when the ba that bum-rushed them turns up dead and they learn that the artifact they dropped is a copy of the priceless Great Key, which contains the Cetagandan genomes of the Haut class that they use to guide the development of Cetagandan society. Miles realizes that an unknown enemy is attempting to frame Barrayar and potentially start a war and finds an ally in Haut Rian Degtiar, the current "Handmaiden of the Star Creche" who is charged with the duties of the Empress until a new one is chosen. Miles then learns of the real plans of the Haut class-- to evolve beyond the merely human.
In short order, Miles solves the mystery and stops a plot to fragment the Empire into eight dangerously expansionist-minded parts and finds the forces behind the conspiracy, and stops them all. For his troubles, he gets awarded the Order of Merit- one of the highest Cetagandan honors by the Emperor himself.
Overall: Another great entry in the series--- it's going to be interesting to see if Bujold keeps these fresh and interesting going forward- though I realize saying that about a novel written in 1996 seems a little strange, this is my first time going through these. But for now, the magic of Miles is still potent. I loved that we got to actually see and explore Cetaganda. I loved the depictions of Cetaganda and how starkly different and alien it seemed compared to anything we had seen before in the series.
Will I keep reading these books? Yes, I will. I haven't had this much fun with a series in a long time. They are solid, they are a pleasure to read and they continue to be entertaining and exciting science fiction at its very best. My Grade: **** out of ****
