when she got drafted by the islanders in the 2020 nhl draft, no one was expecting it.
sure she was on the zoom with all the top prospects but she thought it was for show and really she’d only been present to watch her friend brendan get drafted.
but alas, her name was called before his. brendan jumped onto her immediately bringing her into a hug before her mother brought her into her arms .
adelaide’s brothers stood shocked as she placed an islanders hat on her head. quinn and luke congratulated her after jer interviews and jack just lifted his head in acknowledgment.
that was four years ago.
now she was in the big leagues, leaving the university of michigan in her sophomore year and finding a permanent spot on the islanders roster.
“barzy, should i do one braid or two for the game?” she asked, barging into her teammates room.
during her rookie season, mat had been tasked with looking after her. it didn’t take long before the two of them started acting like siblings, going as far as to call each other such in interviews.
“i don’t know addy. tito should she do one braid or two?” mat asked his former teammate over the phone.
“two!” tito replied.
“anthony!” adelaide squealed jumping into bed with mat. the man on the phone laughed as mat chastised the younger girl, he truly did miss the two.
“hi mon chou, how are you?” he asked.
“i’m great! super excited for the game. except for the fact that my brothers will be there and jack hasn't been in the stands to see me play like ever," she ranted.
tito and mat both gave the girl a sad look. but adelaide brushed them off, giving anthony a smile and asking "how's the checklist going?"
when the news of anthony's trade dropped, adelaide provided the boy with her personal nashville checklist. she had covered a pretty good chunk of it and wanted her friend to do the same.
"you seem distracted," tito pointed out.
adelaide shrugged, she looked over to mat hoping he didn't spill her secret. but then she was reminded that tito and mat knew her better than her brothers.
well, those two are her brothers.
"mon chou whatever it is, we're here for you," tito's toned softened and mat pulled the younger girl into her arms.
"um, there's this guy i met ..." adelaide was cut off by tito yelling
"barzy you let her near a guy! i thought we agreed no boys till she's 45!" he joked causing the two in the hotel room to scoff. tito smiled, happy to change the girls mood slightly.
"as i was saying, i met this guy and he was really tall tito and he was so sweet. he was canadian for sure, but he didn't know who I was which is awesome and he said he;s going to be in new york for a bit," she explained.
in the three years of knowing adelaide hughes, tito and mat had never seen her talk about a boy this way. she always presented a cold front and if someone tried flirting with her at a bar she'd shut them down.
"that's not all is it?" tito pressed.
"like i said earlier, my brothers are going to be there. tito, whenever I have something important jack is always there to steal the spotlight," you murmured the last part.
mat remembers the comments under your draft post about jack not wanting to be there at all, or how he hadn't even congratulated his sister for her achievement.
╭── ⋅ ⋅ ── ✩ ── ⋅ ⋅──╮
when it was time for the outdoor game, adelaide had focused her attention on the game and not on the two boys in the stands. the only thing that really threw her off was the announcement that a rookie was debuting at the game.
"oh you're kidding me," she whispered when she saw the guy making his debut.
mat looked over at adelaide and saw her staring at the new rangers players. the new player doing the same upon seeing adelaide.
the older boy kept the interaction in his head as a reminder to ask adelaide later.
the game was a bit up and down as adelaide and matt got distracted by each other. however, the former did a good job of not letting it affect her game.
the islanders lost in overtime and adelaide's frustrations were evident on her face. she skipped out on media and headed to her parents, calling the boy that plagues her mind.
"meet me at the same bar tomorrow night," she told him ending the call immediately.
ellen wrapped her arms around her daughter and praised her efforts during the game, calling the overtime goal sheer luck. luke teased his older sister about the devils win and jack was preoccupied with his phone.
adelaide didn't need jack's attention but she craved it. even when she was a child, all she wanted was to make her brother proud of her.
the awkwardness within the hughes family didn't last long as mat came around, wrapping his arm over adelaide. he greeted the parents and the two boys before stealing the girl away from her family.
he could see the hurt in her eyes when jack didn't acknowledge her. mat knew that inside her head, adelaide was listing all the bad things she could've possibly done to have her brother hate her.
"addy, the canadian guy from the bar. it's rempe isn't it," mat stated as soon as the two reached adelaide's apartment.
the hughes girl stilled. "barzy, i swear i didn't know. we never spoke about hockey and I was shocked when I saw him today," she rambled.
mat pulled her in for a hug as her eyes started to fill with tears, she was overwhelmed and mat knew she needed some comfort.
"you're the best brother a girl could ask for," adelaide whispered.
╭── ⋅ ⋅ ── ✩ ── ⋅ ⋅──╮
the next day, matt and adelaide made their way to the bar in the morning. the latter had been pacing around the entrance with a cup of coffee in her hand.
"didn't see you as a day drinker hughes," matt quipped.
adelaide couldn't help the smile that made its way on her face. however, one look at the boy's cut reminded her of why she was here.
"you didn't tell me you were a hockey player,"
"you didn't tell me either princess,"
in all honesty, the two weren't sure where the conversation was going but matt called adelaide for a walk.
the two spoke freely about everything and anything. adelaide forgot why she was angry at the boy and matt enjoyed his time with the pretty girl.
╭── ⋅ ⋅ ── ✩ ── ⋅ ⋅──╮
that exchange happened three months ago.
"is your family coming down for playoffs?" matt asked. the two of you were currently enjoying a lazy day in bed, matt was playing with your hair as you scrolled through tiktok.
you shook your head.
"well my mum and da may come down but they've got to see quinny too and he's stressed cause he's captain. then jack's got his shoulder surgery and luke's going to worlds. but I don't mind," you answered quickly.
matt's heart sunk.
in the three months he'd known you he learnt three things
one: mat barzal was more of a brother than your actual brothers
two: jack was an asshole
three: you would always blame yourself for anyone's flaws
"when you guys play at home and if I've got nothing going on I'll come watch you," he whispered, pulling you in for a kiss.
you smiled giddily at your boyfriend and snuggled into his chest. he truly was the perfect boyfriend.

CW: One small mention of death
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Hey….” “Don’t say anything Steve…just…don’t.” “Wasn’t going to say anything…but uh you ready to go or wanna stay a little longer?” “Why’d he call you? He didn’t…he shouldn’t have done that…I’m grown.” “He was worried that’s all.” “He’s not worried about me…he doesn’t care about me.” “Right…yeah…whatever you say…soooo…we staying or are we leaving?” “You’ll never leave me will you Stevie?” “No…you’re sadly stuck with me as your older brother for the rest of your life.” “I love him…and he doesn’t care.” “Hey…look at me…he cares okay? He just has to do what’s best for him and you can’t hate him for that…he needed a new start after Wayne died and…you have to let him go.” “I’m not ready…I don’t want to.” “I can’t sit here and let you be miserable all the time…you have to start to let him go and move on…it’s been six months.” “I just miss him…he doesn’t even want to come visit…” “because it’s too soon…he’s not ready to come back because he’s not sure he’ll be able to leave again if he comes back now…but please just…can we go home?” “I’m sorry Stevie…you shouldn’t have to come get your sister from a shitty bar because she’s drunk and crying over a dumb boy.” “That’s what big brothers are for…but yeah next time can you pick a place that isn’t so…sticky?” “Do you think he loves me?” “I..I think he did…yeah.” “He did? So…not anymore?” “I think he had to do what he had to do…so he’d be able to leave…and I think that meant he had to rid himself of his feelings for you..” “So he’ll never want to love me because I’m the reason he wouldn’t be able to leave?” “I don’t know…I really don’t know.” “Okay…you can take me home now…” “I love you…you’re going to be okay…I’ll make sure of it.” “I love you too…thank you.”

Enough to Go By (Chapter 6) -- a Shigaraki x f!Reader fic
Your best friend vanished on the same night his family was murdered, and even though the world forgot about him, you never did. When a chance encounter brings you back into contact with Shimura Tenko, you'll do anything to make sure you don't lose him again. Keep his secrets? Sure. Aid the League of Villains? Of course. Sacrifice everything? You would - but as the battle between the League of Villains and hero society unfolds, it becomes clear that everything is far more than you or anyone else imagined it would be. (cross-posted to Ao3)
Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5
Chapter 6
You find out what Tenko’s up to from the news – or from Kazuo, who texts you to tell you that “your friend” is making headlines again. It’s an uncharacteristic move for Tenko, who you know has been trying to keep to the shadows while he gathers allies, and it gets weirder when you find out that he showed up in a shopping center to have a conversation with one of the students from the class he attacked. You weren’t really watching the Sports Festival, but this kid made headlines for repeatedly breaking his fingers while trying to use his quirk. Every so often, quirked people make you really grateful that you don’t have one yourself.
Tenko didn’t get caught. He was long gone before the heroes and law enforcement showed up. But the incident leaves a weird taste in your mouth. He wandered into a mall to chat with a high school student. Why didn’t he talk to you? You’re supposed to be his best friend, his sidekick. He called the two of you hanging out together a date. What could he tell a high school student that he didn’t feel safe telling you?
The question consumes you more than you want it to, so you fall back on your now time-honored tradition of drowning yourself in tasks to avoid thoughts you don’t like. Work, and sitting with Yoshimi through her treatments, and ducking phone calls from your parents, who are moving the whole family – again – and want you to come home and help. Your mom threatens to throw away all your old stuff if you don’t, and even though you took everything you cared about with you when you moved away, the thought of your things being thrown out with the trash bothers you. It bothers you enough that you use your one day off in two weeks to go back to your parents’ house and clean out what’s left of your room.
When you get there, you find half the house out on the lawn, and your mother arguing with the oldest of your younger siblings. “Don’t take that tone with me, Haru,” she’s snapping. “Whatever you think you’re doing, it’s not as important as helping out your family. We need you here to –”
It’s like something snaps in your head, and you’re swamped in the memories of a hundred times where you were told the same thing. You thought that with you gone, your parents would have pulled themselves together, but it looks like not. It looks like they just dragged your brother into replace you. You step forward without thinking, right into the middle of it. “Hey, Haru. Hey, Mom. Sorry I’m late.”
Both of them stare at you. There’s something accusing in Haru’s stare, not that you blame him for that. Your mom looks more relieved than anything else, and with her temporarily neutralized, you turn to your brother. “Go do what you need to do, Haru. I’ll fill in until you get back.”
Haru doesn’t need to be told twice, and he doesn’t wait around for your mom to protest. He books it, and you turn to face your mom again, the feeling of accomplishment at defusing a conflict drowned almost immediately by your frustration with yourself. Two seconds. You’ve been here two seconds, and you’ve stepped back into the part you used to play like you never left.
Your mom hugs you. “Haru’s been just terrible these last few years,” she complains. “Any time we ask him to help, he throws the biggest fit. I can’t count the number of times I’ve told him to act more like you –”
“He’s nineteen, Mom. He’s got his own life,” you remind here, like it’ll help at all. You step back out of her embrace. “I came to sort through my stuff. Where is it?”
She gestures vaguely at one corner of the front yard, and you make your way over, at which point you discover that what your mom described as your stuff is actually only half yours. The other half seems to be every picture and keepsake your parents have of you. You knew your relationship with your parents wasn’t ideal, that they stopped being interested in you the second you stopped being useful to them, but seeing this gives you pause. “Mom –”
“We’re downsizing,” your mother explains. “Take what you want. We’ll throw the rest out.”
Fine. If that’s how they want it, that’s fine with you. The first things you dump in the throwaway pile are every photo that consists of just you and one or both of your parents. There goes the whole first year of your life, like it never happened at all. After that, it gets a little more difficult, because your siblings are in the pictures and it’s not their fault they were born. You find a partially filled photo album, start stripping the pictures you want to keep from their frames, and fit them into the remaining spaces. You don’t have a lot of space for picture frames. And this way you don’t have to look at them unless you want to.
Most of your toys and books went to your siblings as hand-me-downs, usually before you were actually done with them, so most of the things that are yours are things you had to fight to save. Your favorite books, which you rescued by carrying them around in your backpack twenty-four seven. A journal with a lock on it and no key, but you know how to pick locks now, so it doesn’t matter as much as it did before. Then there’s a box that’s been taped, glued, and stapled shut, with DO NOT TOUCH written all over it. You remember mummifying this box when you were ten or so. You just don’t remember why you did it.
You can open it once you’re home. You stack the photo album on top of it and keep hunting through all the pieces of your life that your parents are planning to throw away.
In the end, you can’t take much stuff. You don’t have very much room, and while Kazuo would probably agree to let you store things in his house, you don’t want to have to ask him to do that. There’s not really that much important stuff here, anyway. The books and games from when you were really little? You outgrew them a long time ago, so what would you even be keeping them for? It’s not like you’re going to have kids.
That thought came out of nowhere. You sit back on your heels, frowning at the change of tune. In spite of the shitshow of your childhood and the fact that you’d most likely pass on your quirklessness and put the next generation in the same second-class position as you are, you’ve always seen yourself having children. Not very many children. Two, most likely, and a decent difference in their ages – enough that you could let them have their own time instead of treating them like twins, not so much that you’d run the risk of parentifying the older one even slightly. You think you’d be a good parent, maybe. At the very least you know what not to do.
You’ve been sure of that since you were old enough to figure out where babies come from. This is the first time you’ve had the other thought, and it feels like a certainty. When did it change?
The answer is lurking somewhere in the back of your mind, and you decide you’re not interested in answering it right now. With your stuff sorted, you dump the things you’re not taking into the garbage pile, making sure your mom sees which photos you’re getting rid of. You really should leave after that, but then the rest of your siblings come barreling out of the house, and you don’t think you should leave without saying goodbye.
Isuzu, the oldest of your younger sisters, is in her last year of high school. Music is her thing, and she’s applying to every conservatory in the country – keeping her options open, she says, but you know she means getting away from home. The twins, Shigure and Shinji, are both at Ketsubutsu Academy, training to be heroes. They’ve enhanced their control over their quirks to the point where they can induce specific parts of the vomiting process at will, and they demonstrate it on you, making your throat burn and your mouth flood with bitter-tasting saliva before your mom catches them at it and makes them stop. The triplets, a full ten years younger than you, aren’t even out of primary school yet. They want to be heroes, too.
Your dad arrives, with Haru in tow, as you’re making your second attempt to escape. He hugs you, too, and asks why you don’t come home more – right before he asks you to get the triplets washed up for dinner and check that they’ve done their homework. You almost tell him to go fuck himself, but ultimately you don’t want the fight. You herd the triplets back inside and start with the homework.
Isuzu follows you, not speaking up until after you’ve confirmed that the homework is completed and shooed the triplets off to the bathroom. “How did you do that so fast? It takes me and Haru forever to get them moving.”
“Practice,” you say. “More than I should have gotten. More than you’ll get if you get out of here.”
“I’m working on it,” Isuzu says. She looks uncomfortable, and like she wants to say more. You wait. “I’m sorry I told on you back then. If I hadn’t, maybe –”
You shake your head. “I had to go.” You cover your upper arm, the same motion Tenko made, and a chill runs down your spine. “I didn’t leave because you told them about this. I left because I got into my apprenticeship, and they told me I couldn’t do it.”
“What?” Isuzu looks shocked. “Why?”
“They needed me at home.” You shrug, your nonchalance masking the memory of the bolt of rage that shot through you when you realized what they were trying to do. “The only way to stop it was to make sure I wasn’t home anymore. I wish it hadn’t landed on you and Haru.”
“Haru’s madder about it than me,” Isuzu says. She leans against you, her head on your shoulder. “I remember stuff he doesn’t. Like that friend you had across the street. I don’t remember his name –”
“Tenko,” you say. Your heart lurches into an unsteady rhythm. “You remember him?”
“Not really. I remember you talking about him, though. You always had so many stories to tell.” Isuzu sighs. “Did they ever find out what really happened to him?”
“No,” you say. You did, though. You might be the only one who knows what became of Shimura Tenko, and even you don’t know the details. “I’m surprised you remember. Mom and Dad didn’t like me talking about him.”
“They didn’t like you being sad,” Isuzu corrects. “They don’t like me being sad, either. I’d be sad if it was my best friend who vanished. You said you were gonna marry him.”
“I – what?” Before you can follow up on the absolutely batshit thing your sister just said, one of the triplets comes back into the living room with obviously unwashed hands. “Arisa, I know you didn’t wash those. Go back in.”
Arisa sticks her tongue out at you. “You can’t tell me what to do. You don’t even live here. And you don’t have a quirk.”
“Right,” you say, a moment before Arisa activates her quirk and wallops you with every ounce of the contempt she feels for you. It takes all your self-control to avoid bursting into tears. “I can leave, though. Mom can’t get me in trouble any more, because I’m grown up. But she can definitely get you in trouble. Risk it if you want.”
Arisa glares at you for a moment longer, then heads back to the bathroom. You clear your throat and blink hard, digging your nails into your palm to give yourself something else to focus on. “Even I felt that one,” Isuzu remarks, wincing. “How do you take this stuff?”
You clear your throat again. “Practice.”
You make it through dinner, then book it, telling Isuzu and Haru to look you up the next time they’re in Yokohama and hitting the road before the twins or the triplets can use their quirks on you again. You cry a little bit on the train home, just enough to let off steam, and text your friends, who know what your family’s like and all advised you not to go. When they ask how it went, you send back a sad face.
Mitsuko: fuck them, then. they don’t deserve you
Hirono: come over and get trashed if you want. always makes me feel better
Sho: ooh, party at Hiro’s
Sho: count me in
Yoshimi: I can’t but 💛💛💛
Mitsuru: can I bring Izumi
Mitsuru gets a resounding thumbs-down from everybody for that one. Ryuhei chimes in, saying he’s down for a party, and Kazuo moves the venue to his house from Hirono’s shitty apartment in Kamino Ward. When you get off the train in Yokohama, you head over to Kazuo’s without stopping at home first.
Your friends have varying ideas on how to make you feel better. Mitsuko and Hirono think you should get drunk, so you drink a little, and Sho thinks you should bitch as much as you want about your family, so you do. Mitsuru’s got lots of siblings, so you complain about siblings together, and Ryuhei, not to be outdone, offers to beat up the triplets for you. “My quirk is perfect for it,” he says. “They’ll never know what hit them.”
They wouldn’t – Ryuhei’s quirk is called Reflection, and it bounces any quirk-based attack right back in the face of whoever sent it. “They’re ten,” you say.
“So?”
“Wait until they’re adults and it’ll be legal,” Kazuo says blandly. “What’s in the box?”
“Oh,” you say. You haven’t let go of it, although you relinquished the photo album to Mitsuko and Hirono after extracting promises that they wouldn’t take the photos out. “I’m not sure. I guess I thought it was pretty important.”
Kazuo touches his temple, then lowers his hand. “You don’t know, so I don’t know, either.”
“Let’s open it,” Hirono suggests. Mitsuko is still flipping through the photo album. “What kind of dirty secrets have you got in there?”
“I was ten. Not a lot of dirty secrets at that age.” You hold the box out to her. “Mind doing the honors on the tape?”
Hirono’s quirk is called Slice. It lets her cut narrow lines in any substance she draws her finger over, and you know she’s used it for good and evil at various points in her life. She cuts through the tape, you pry out the staples, and you and your friends from high school look down at the things you thought were worth hiding when you were ten years old.
There’s another journal, which means the one you grabbed was probably a decoy. You don’t remember being this sneaky, but you’re guessing you had a reason, and as you look through the other things in the box, you realize what it was. “I hid this before my memory got wiped,” you say. “It’s all things about my friend.”
“I thought they were just wiping your memories of the murder scene,” Mitsuru says, frowning.
“That’s what they got, sort of.” Memories are coming back to you as you peer into the box, memories of collecting these things, squirreling them away, panic beating at the base of your throat the entire time. “They were going for all of it.”
There’s a plush toy – a corgi, the same kind as Tenko’s dog, because you’d always wanted a dog and your parents always said no. Tenko got it for you for your birthday, the same year you had to go home early from his party. There are a bunch of photos, too, stolen out of a photo album – possibly the same partially-empty album you found when you were sorting. Some are from school. Some are from parties – yours, Tenko’s, Hana’s. Some were pretty clearly taken by Tenko’s mom. Seeing them makes you want to cry.
In the pictures, Tenko’s house is still standing. Tenko’s family is still alive. There’s Tenko like he used to be, dark-haired and grey-eyed and quirkless and happy. The two of you were always happy together, even if you weren’t happy at home. “These are cute,” Sho remarks. “Lots of puppy love going on here, and I’m not talking about the dog.”
You remember that you apparently told Isuzu you were going to marry Tenko and cringe from the thought. “Don’t be weird.”
“If it helps, it doesn’t look all that unrequited,” Mitsuko says, peering over your shoulder. “Check that one out.”
The photo she’s pointing at is from your class’s Valentine’s Day party. You and Tenko are trying to trade valentines, except you’re too embarrassed to look at him while you hand yours over. He’s not embarrassed to look at you. He’s grinning, that same smile that some of the other girls called creepy, the one you still like seeing because you know that it’s real, and he’s holding out a valentine of his own for you.
The valentine Tenko gave you is in the box, although his handwriting is impossible to read when you’ve had as many drinks as you’ve had tonight. In the corner of the box is another, tinier box. It looks like a jewelry box, and when you pry it open, a memory floods over you. There’s a locket inside. You put a picture in it the day before you got your memory wiped, and when you pick it up, you find the picture staring up at you. Tenko. Even five years after he vanished, you couldn’t let him go.
You shouldn’t have had so much to drink. If you were sober, you absolutely wouldn’t be bursting into tears.
Your friends aren’t exactly clear on why you’re crying, but they comfort you anyway, Mitsuko and Hirono and Sho hugging you while Ryuhei and Mitsuru hang awkwardly back, patting your shoulders. The only person who doesn’t get in on it is Kazuo, but Kazuo was never the touchiest, even before his mind snapped. And something’s up with Kazuo tonight. Even through your own mess of emotion, you can tell.
You wait until everyone else is drifting off before you try to get it out of him. “What’s wrong?”
“The HPSC is reactivating me.”
“They – what?” The alcohol’s made you just a little slow – the anger hits before the understanding’s truly formed in your head. “No, they can’t. They can’t, Kazuo! After what they did to you –”
“My provisional license is still active. That means they can.” Kazuo extracts a letter from his pocket and holds it out for you to peruse. You can barely read it. Your vision is swimming with rage. “When All Might crippled the black market, he took down every possible informant with it. Someone is backing the League of Villains. They need to find out who. My quirk is the fastest way.”
“They can’t do this. Not with what happened last time.” Your heart is hammering. Kazuo’s work-study was in Yokohama. When he collapsed, they brought him to your clinic, and you saw firsthand what overuse of his quirk did to him. “It could kill you.”
“There are safeguards, theoretically.” Kazuo’s voice is flat, emotionless. Like it’s been for two years and counting. “If you read further in the letter, you’ll see the protocol they outlined.”
You don’t need to read it. “You’ve got a medical condition. Using your quirk will exacerbate it. They can’t just conscript you like this!”
“It’s done,” Kazuo says. You look at him, speechless with fury, still too close to tears. “I didn’t tell you so you could get angry over something you can’t solve. I told you because I’ve predicted the types of questions they’ll instruct me to ask. I can ask them in a way that will preclude you in the answers.”
You hadn’t even thought that far ahead. “But in order for me to do that,” Kazuo continues, “you must keep yourself out of their search parameters. As long as you don’t directly aid your friend in the committing of a crime, you’ll fall outside their net.”
“Directly aid,” you repeat. “What does that mean?”
Kazuo gives you a look. “Failing to stop something is not the same thing as assisting in it.”
Now you get it. Kazuo’s telling you that simply knowing what Tenko’s up to isn’t enough to get you in trouble. In order for you to come under suspicion through Kazuo’s quirk, you’d have to actually do something – not just to help Tenko, but to help Tenko commit a crime. “I understand.”
You do. But that fury is still bubbling up within you, pointless as it is, at the thought that catching some vague scraps of information about the League of Villains is worth Kazuo’s sanity, Kazuo’s life. “We’ll figure something out. I won’t let them keep using you.”
Kazuo’s eyes are blank. They’ve been blank for years. But every so often you’ve seen a flash of something within them – some feeling, something familiar, something of the boy you knew. “You can’t save both of us,” he says, and his right hand falls from his temple to rest in his lap.
He was using his quirk just then. What was he asking? What did he see? You want to ask him, but he’s just picked up a half-empty bottle of vodka and drained it, and now it’s all hands on deck to hustle him to the bathroom in time for him to throw it back up.
The thought crosses your mind, as you’re rubbing his shoulders and offering him tissues to wipe his mouth, that it would have been easier if you’d fallen harder for Kazuo. If you’d fallen hard enough to cling to him even when his heroic ambitions pulled him away, hard enough to hold on even when the overuse of his quirk destroyed his ability to feel anything at all, hard enough to fight for him even when he doesn’t see a point to trying at anything any longer. It would have been hard, sure. But at the same time, it would have been easier for everyone involved if you’d felt for Kazuo the way you feel for Tenko.
You and Kazuo fall asleep on the bathroom floor, and in the morning, you’ve got a backache and a hangover. So does everybody else, but there’s something at least a little relieving in the fact that you’re all suffering together. You’ve got work, but it’s a half day, and it starts at noon. Plenty of time for you to go home and take a shower and try to sober up the rest of the way.
At least that’s what you think. When you step out of the bathroom in your apartment wrapped in a towel, you step directly into a warp gate, and it swallows you whole.
Kurogiri said he’d tell you what you were walking into the next time Tenko summoned you, but maybe he just forgot. You think you can probably talk Tenko into sending you back long enough to put on clothes. But once your feet touch the ground, it’s clear that you aren’t in the bar, where you’ve been nearly every time Tenko’s called for you. The air is cold and clammy, and there’s a strange smell, half antiseptic, half rot. You know this smell. You remember it from a field trip you took in nursing school. It smells like a morgue.
It smells like a morgue, and it’s pitch-black. You can’t see your hand in front of your face. Where’s Tenko? You can’t imagine him summoning you here without an explanation – which means he’s not the one who summoned you. Who did?
A voice issues from the darkness, deep and almost friendly. “Do you know who I am?”
The revulsion and terror that sweeps over you at the sound of his voice are almost enough to bring you to your knees. But you grew up in a family full of quirk users whose quirks affected the mind and body, and they loved to practice on you. Sixteen years of surviving it gives you the experience to stay on your feet. And when you think about it, you do know who this is. “You’re Sensei,” you say, and the man in the darkness makes a pleased sound. “Shigaraki’s master.”
“Very good,” the man says, but it isn’t – you only remembered to use Tenko’s new name at the last second. “Now it’s your turn. Tell me who you are – and who you are to Tomura.”
“I’m – nobody,” you say. Sensei’s influence over you intensifies, and you keep your feet with an effort. “I’m a nurse. He came to the clinic I work at last year. He’d hurt his wrist.”
“I see,” Sensei says after a moment. “Had you met Tomura before that time?”
Tomura? No. You shake your head, only to remember that Tenko’s master probably can’t see in the dark. “No.”
“But you’ve seen him since.”
“Yes,” you say. “When he’s injured, he sends Kurogiri to find me. So I can help.”
“I see,” Sensei says again. You’re tempted to point out that if the doctor, whoever the doctor is, had treated Tenko’s gunshot wounds, Tenko wouldn’t have needed to call for you in the first place. But that would escalate things. You keep your mouth shut. “Do you possess a healing quirk?”
“No.”
“That’s a shame,” Sensei remarks. “Would you like one?”
“No,” you say at once. Maybe too quickly, given the insanity of the statement. “It’s not possible to give quirks.”
“It is. And they can be taken away just as easily,” Sensei says. You stay quiet, and when he speaks again, it’s a change of subject. “It seems Tomura has taken a liking to you.”
“I – I wouldn’t know,” you stammer. How much does Tenko’s master know? “I don’t know how Shigaraki feels about anything.”
“Thankfully, I do.” Sensei goes silent for a moment. “I suppose it’s wise of Tomura to keep a medical provider in his orbit, even if you would be more useful to him with a healing quirk. What is your quirk?”
Your stomach instantly twists into a knot. “I don’t have one.”
“Mm.” Sensei’s voice takes on a reflective note. “Let’s remedy that.”
The darkness is complete. You don’t see the hand coming; all you can do is startle when it clamps down over your face, enormous and rough and hot. Your breath leaves you in a sharp gasp, too quiet to be a scream but still too close for comfort. But just as suddenly as the hand settled over your face, it pulls away with equal speed. Sensei chuckles, a low, dark sound that makes your skin crawl. “You’ve been dishonest with me, but I can’t fault you for not sharing what you don’t know.”
You’ve been dishonest, yes. It doesn’t seem like he knows about that. But what don’t you know? “Sir? I don’t understand.”
“You have manners. It’s a shame Tomura won’t appreciate them,” Sensei says. “You will understand in time. Kurogiri?”
The mist begins to billow around you – and at the same time, it clears partially, revealing the shape of the man standing before you. He’s terrifyingly large, looming over you, and his face – “I would advise against telling Tomura of our meeting,” Sensei says as you stare up at him in terror, “but that is ultimately your decision to make. You and I will have no further dealings. Tomura has chosen you as a piece in his game. I will leave you to him.”
The terror drowns you. You fight to keep your head above water. “Yes, sir.”
“Sir,” Sensei repeats. “I do like that.”
The tone in his voice breaks your composure, just as the mist closes around you. By the time Kurogiri deposits you back on the floor in your apartment – in your apartment, they know where you live – you’re hyperventilating, panicking, almost out of your mind. “Shigaraki Tomura will call for you this evening,” Kurogiri says. “I do not know his purpose. I advise you to be prepared for either possibility.”
For a date. Or for a meeting with his new allies. You’ve never felt less prepared for anything in your life. Kurogiri vanishes, and you curl up in a ball, shivering. Maybe it’s from the cold. Maybe it’s from the smell of rot. Maybe it’s from the pure terror of meeting Tenko’s master, of the lingering sensation of his hand closing over your face. Whatever it is, you have to get rid of it. And you still have to go to work. You crawl back to the bathroom, turn the shower on scalding, and climb in.

Even without it being a country album and even if it wasn’t an album “in her genre”, the idea that an artist can only create within a genre is soooo stupid and limiting. I don’t go here but a band I like went from hardcore heavy metal screamo shit to like, high concept alt pop in 10 years and they specifically have said in interview that they distanced themselves from the metal scene because they felt it was too limiting to their ability as artists to be confined by a genre.
They’re incorporating elements now, but like. That’s what you DO with art. You try new things, get good at them or decide you don’t like them, and then you take the bits you like or find useful and incorporate them elsewhere. Idk where the idea that artists are “make more of this specific kind of art only” machines in any way.
People are being hella weird because it’s Beyoncé and broader society seems to hate black people and especially black women winning, but I’ve seen this same thing with pop punk/post-emo whiteboy bands trying a new sound and having an album flop because everyone quietly just “wished it was like their last one” until a few years later when everyone realized it was good actually and they were being close minded.
Do I find her most popular song right now overplayed on the radio? Yes. I listen to a LOT of radio. But it’s a good fucking song and she can make country if she damn well wants to. I swear we all JUST did this with Lil Nas X. If I’m tired I can’t imagine how tired the people who actively follow this are cause at this point it’s goofy as hell. People getting mad over nothing with the memory of a goldfish so they can get mad over the same nothing again in three months
Ooo you fuckin said it. It's the literal fact that music as a whole can't evolve if we don't allow individual artists to evolve and especially black artists. There's a wide variety of reasons why this unjust hate is here but I feel like two of the main reasons are 1) consumers have become a little too comfortable expecting from artists as if they owe us something as opposed to just enjoying the harvest and 2) in this current rage based culture we let our dislike of someone get in the way of viewing the facts as facts. The fact of the matter is Beyonce and any artist in the world, yes including the ones you hate, can do whatever tf they want bc they don't owe us shit

This is CQL only as I haven’t read the novel or watched the donghua. I REPEAT: THIS IS CQL ONLY.
Hi! So it’s been established here that lwj did A LOT of significant things that the story chose not to show.
Written in that post is: Lan Wangji saved A-Yuan and Wen Qing and that’s why he was late at the Battle in Nevernight.
There are a few more things that I want to say:
Lan Wangji spoke up for the Wens. He openly expressed that the Wens should not be executed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For those who are saying that Lan Wangji is just as useless as anyone who did nothing for the Wens, then stop. Because HE DID something. You could argue that he didn’t do enough. But what else do you want him to do? Battle the Jins himself and lose his life? Point is, if you check the deleted scenes, Lan Wangji, in fact, DID battle the Jins (even the Lans!!!) in order to save Wen Qing’s life. He’s so much better than those who literally did nothing and let the Jins do as they please.
Tumblr media
This was already stated in the linked post above but I’m still gonna put it here: Lan Wangji saved A-Yuan BEFORE Wei Wuxian died. Not after.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When he saw A-Yuan, he didn’t have the arm injury he got from the Battle in Nevernight. When he was defending the Burial Mounds, you can see the blood on his right arm, which indicates the presence of the injury he got from the Battle in Nevernight. So this means that he saved A-Yuan before he got his arm injury— before the war— before Wei Wuxian died. So for those who’s saying that Lan Wangji only redeemed himself after Wei Wuxian’s resurrection, you’re wrong. He has always been on Wei Wuxian’s side since day one.
I’ve seen people say that Lan Wangji probably didn’t have any contribution during A-Yuan’s growth since he was recovering. Wow, idk where they got that from. They must know better than A-Yuan then?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A-Yuan openly expressed that he adores Lan Wangji. When he and Wen Ning reunited, he kept talking about Lan Wangji. A-Yuan himself said that Lan Wangji is his father/brother figure, which means that HE IS a big part of A-Yuan growing up. Look, just because the director didn’t show it, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Who says that a man can’t show love and affection to a child just because he’s injured?
Lan Wangji leaving Wei Wuxian at the end wasn’t uncharacteristic. He doesn’t deserve the hate he gets because of that.
Tumblr media
Y’all hated Lan Wangji for leaving Wei Wuxian in the end. It’s probably censorship, I agree. But for me, it wasn’t uncharacteristic. I wish you all to stop being WangXian-centered for a while and think of what just happened. Lan Xichen is currently experiencing a very devastating heartbreak. I think the reason why Lan Wangji couldn’t leave with Wei Wuxian was because he wanted to take care of his brother. Y’all hated MDZS Lan Wangji for leaving Lan Xichen just like that when he’s experiencing what Lan Wangji experienced 13/16 years ago but now that CQL Lan Wangji prioritized Lan Xichen, y’all still hated him? Whatever Lan Wangji does, he always gets hated, doesn’t he?
Lan Wangji is very dedicated to Wei Wuxian but let’s not forget that he still has a life outside Wei Wuxian. The reason why he was able to let Wei Wuxian go on his own was because Wei Wuxian’s life wasn’t in immediate danger anymore. He wasn’t a target anymore since the entire world probably heard of the news already that Wei Wuxian was actually innocent. Lan Wangji had to take care of his brother. He had to take up the role of being the sect leader. And he became the Chief Cultivator, which majority of you think is uncharacteristic. I don’t really have a say about him being the Chief Cultivator but please stop limiting Lan Wangji to what you’ve seen him capable of doing. He is surely capable of growth.
FOR THE LAST TIME: THIS IS CQL ONLY.

Someone made me get up early. 🥱
@JamesBBarnes
-Hey there!- Bucky said entering the training room while I was warming up.- I thought you weren’t coming, your snores were really loud.
I just roll my eyes and let out a little laugh- Come on! I was up until midnight last night.
Bucky joins me and sits on the floor and starts to warm up.
-yeah, I saw the light on, I wanted to see if you were okay but I don’t want people to think whatever.- he shrugs, and gets closer to me.
-I’m okay Buck, I just couldn’t put down the book you gave me, I had to finished it and I did!- I smile proudly and now he is the one who rolls his eyes.
-You know, it’s pretty early, we are the only ones here, so…- he turns to see me, smiling, and I can’t help but to kiss him, it’s a little kiss because we’re scared that someone will come in and catch us.- Hey- he argues.
-I’m sorry, I’m just paranoid that someone will see us.- he lays down on the floor watching me.
-It’s been a month yn, why are we still hiding?- i shook my head and laugh, and he’s right, we’ve been dating for a month now and getting to know each other for more time but I’m still unsure of what to expect when they know, and also, we don’t want to ruin the team and the dynamic we have.
-We have a deal James, give me time, ok?- I tell him and he finally sits down and just stares at me, so I give him another kiss- please?
Fine, fine, it’s your call- he gets up and takes my hand to help me get up- but now, let’s start to train, you are still really weak.
-Hey!- I say offended and he just laughs.
After two hours, that to me felt like 20 years, we finish the training, I like Bucky as a boyfriend but as a trainer he is so strict, and as ex military guy, he just can’t stop doing and doing exercise.
-I don’t like Sergeant Barnes, he’s really strict- I say falling down on the floor, in a really dramatic way, which makes Bucky laughs and rolls his eyes.- But I do like James Barnes.
I’m the only one who calls him James, besides Steve, but I know he prefers me to call him that, he lays down next to me and holds my hand.
-Oh come on! I’m not that strict, Steve handles it really well.
-He’s a super soldier, James, I’m just a weak girl as you say- I laugh and start to play with his hand, and with his bionic arm he starts to strokes my arm.- I could stay like this forever.
And it’s the truth, I’ve been in the team for 3 years now, but my favorite memories are with Bucky, all of them, as friends and now as a couple, i enjoy more stuff with him and more when we are alone.
-Me too, doll, me too- he kisses my head and we stay like that for a while, that we both fall asleep.

you guys look so cute. 🫶🏻
What wakes us up is Natasha’s voice and her camera shutting.
-Morning love birds- She says, I startled and push Bucky away.- Come on, yn, why to be like that, I have the picture.
Bucky finally wakes up, and sees Natasha, i see him trying to say something but he can’t, we just blush and I start to laugh, and Nat sits next to me.
-So, is this new?-she asks and looks at me.
-A month now.- i answer smiling and holding Bucky hand again- You are the first to know, please don’t say anything, promise us you won’t say anything, please?- she nods and laughs.
-I’m just happy to see you both happy.- She says smiling and gets up.- Now if you don’t mind, I’m here to really train.
We get up and finally leave the room.
-Starbucks?- he asks me happily, so I just nod and we head to my car.
We have been going for Starbucks every day since we started to date and I had turned him into an addict to the cafe, but it was nice to have a place for us to be a couple with no fear of being seen.

Im a Starbucks addict.
Thanks to: @yn_rosevelt
A few days later.
There was gonna be a gala, that Tony organizes every year, to receive donations and just give one and another announcement, last year, he announced his engagement with Pepper, but this year there wasn’t going to be one.
-So how are things going with Bucky?- Nat says while helping me to do my hair.
-Really good- I sigh and see Nat smile trough the mirror.
-So, when you are gonna announce it, mhm?
-I don’t know, I really want to, but I’m scared it might ruin everything.- I answer and she finishes to do my hair and sits in the bed while I finish my makeup.
-You have a point, but, also I don’t think it’s a good idea to keep it always a secret, you know, it can be private but not a secret.- I turn to see her.- You can have a private relationship but not a secret, you get me now?
I nod and know what to do.
Me and Nat arrive a little bit later, and he’s already there, in suit and tie, looking handsome than ever, I smile just by looking at him and he catches my look and smile too.
-I’ll go find Steve, ok?- I nod- See you later.
I stay there, just seeing and admiring Bucky, I take a napkin and a pen from my bag and really discreetly hand it to him.
“Meet me in secret”
-Hey handsome- I tell him as he gets closer and gives me a kiss.
-Hey gorgeous- He hugs me and we just stay like that for a few seconds- You look really pretty tonight.
-You too, I love seeing you in a suit. Wanna take a walk?- I ask him as he holds my hand and we walk through the hallways of the big building, we even arrive at the garden.- Nat told me something really wise today.
His eyes are wide open- And what’s that?- he asks me and gives a spin, making my dress look fluffy.
-That we can have a private relationship without being a secret, and I like that idea.
-I like the idea too, doll.- he hugs from behind. -Wanna post it on Instagram? I know how to repost now.
I just laugh and take his hand, taking him inside.-Wait here- I tell him, and take the microphone. -Hi, everyone, so, probably not everyone knows me, but it’s fine, this is an announcement to the ones who knows me.
And that’s how everyone found out that me and Bucky were dating and until now, years later, it’s our kid’s favorite story to hear.

Angel seeing Husk hold the twins for the first time!!
You honestly give me the best prompts, thank you so much <3
I also posted this over on Ao3, all comments are appreciated!
tw: male presenting pregnancy
------
Angel Dust opened his eyes and immediately felt like he’d been hit by a truck. Not a new sensation for him, exactly, but it still sucked.
He probably wouldn’t even qualify as awake by any definition of the word, head full of fog, his vision blurred, but his pain receptors were sure on duty. He knew the deep ache in his muscles, so fierce that he was actually trembling slightly, the rawness in his throat from crying out, louder and louder to the point where it became a pain all its own. He knew where that sickly feeling in his stomach was coming from, exhaustion only skimmed by not enough sleep to do anything more than expose more raw edges.
Angel was awake enough to feel the pain but not awake enough to remember where or when he was, every other time he’d woken up feeling so broken crowding his mind at once. What did I say to Father? What the fuck did I take last night? How long did I last on the wagon this time? How did I piss off Valentino this bad?
Already his eyes began to burn and acid rose in his throat, certain that whatever the reason was, it was only going to bring more pain with it.
“Angel?”
The voice was rough, raspy, almost as exhausted as Angel felt, but it broke through his rising panic like the sun through clouds. He swam towards it through his fractured scraps of thought, relief blunting the edges of his pain, just the thought that whatever he’d taken, whatever had been done to him, whatever bad decisions recent and ancient had landed him in this sorry state, Husk was here. Husk would forgive him, Husk would kiss it better, Husk would help him remember that things could be good. Husk was here.
“Easy, baby, easy, I got you…” Angel felt an arm slide around his shoulders, holding him up when his muscles seized painfully as he tried to rise.
Angel made a rough noise that was really several curse words trying to tumble out of his mouth at once, groping for and finding Husk’s hand. Something about that action sparked a memory, more recent, the kind he could follow back to the here and now. He practically felt indentations pressed into Husk’s palm, fitting his grasp exactly.
He felt strangely unbalanced as the other demon helped him lean against the pillows, as upright as he was going to manage in this state. His body didn’t just hurt, it felt wrong for some reason, like he was a puzzle piece with a gap right in the middle.
Like they were trying to fill that space, words he didn’t understand yet rose in his throat. He didn’t know why he asked but the words burned a little, like he’d never cared about anything so much in his life.
“Where are they?”
He could see Husk now, he got to watch the expression on his face become pure adoration. Suddenly he didn’t look so tired, he seemed to brighten from the inside out, like the answer itself was something glowing and golden.
“They’re right here, baby. Safe and sound, thanks to you.”
It was like slipping into a dream and having your brain suddenly decide it was falling, tumbling you right back out again. Dizzying freefall, sudden impact, instant relief so strong it was almost painful. That's how it felt when Husk’s words brought all of Angel’s memories flooding back.
It was because he’d said it back then too, last night, though it felt like years ago. It didn’t even feel correct to say it happened last night, to pin the moment so firmly in time when there had been no such thing. It had just been a sea of hurt and fear that threatened to swallow Angel completely but moments of love had jutted up like rocks from that raging surf, giving him something to swim towards, a way to keep going, five seconds to catch his breath. This one had come right at the end, just when the storm had spat him out and left him broken on some shore he didn’t recognise. Those same words, they’re here, safe and sound, thanks to you.
Angel remembered what happened. They had happened.
He recognised his bedroom now but it was the one difference that drew his eye, the bassinet sat next to the bed. He was pulled towards it by a force almost magnetic, his pounding heart only slowing down when he saw them there, pressed up against the soft divider between them like they were trying to reach each other. One little girl, one little boy. Two goddamn miracles.
“See?” Husk rubbed small circles on Angel’s bare shoulder, “They’re sleeping. Have been for hours now, you’d think they did all the work today.”
Angel’s initial panic fell away, leaving a kind of exhausted joy to well up in its place. The little newborns were still strangers to him, he hadn’t quite memorized their faces yet, but knowing they were there, close by and safe, filled that place inside him.
“Must be exhausting being that adorable,” Angel murmured, his voice a rasping wheeze like there was a leak in his engine.
“Well you’d know, wouldn’t you?” Husk purred so hard it would be difficult to hear his voice if he wasn’t nuzzling Angel as he spoke, the words pressed right against his skin.
“Shut up, I look like shit,” Angel scoffed, though he was suddenly grinning.
“Not to me, baby…”
Husk had a way of saying things like that, a way that made it impossible to not believe him, even when Angel could feel the bags under his red rimmed eyes, his hair stiff with dried sweat, his still rounded stomach and stiff, awkward movements as he tried to remember how to pilot his own body. But Husk said it with a showman’s conviction, reminding Angel of the moment he really did honestly believe that he’d pulled that card from thin air or that coin from behind his ear.
So Angel just tucked away those words, that smile Husk had given him, adding it to the long list of ways his husband had brought him through the last nine months when it would have been impossible without him, “Well. I feel like shit, even if I’m real good at hiding it.”
“No wonder,” Husk murmured, running his fingers gently down Angel’s spine, “You pulled off a goddamn miracle, baby. Feel like I should be on my knees worshiping you or something.”
“Maybe after I've recovered, huh?” Angel smirked, finally pulling his eyes off his babies and looking up at Husk, frowning a little, “Shit, Husky, have you slept at all?”
The guilty look the cat demon struggled to wipe off his face gave Angel all the answers he needed, “I mean…I’m okay, I was just spectating…”
“Bullshit,” Angel reached up, stroking back Husk’s whiskers, all bent out of shape from where he’d fussed with them, “You did a hell of a lot more than that. Charlie told us both to get rest, dumbass, need me to set her on you?”
Husk’s ears went back a little. Their princess had shown just how forceful she could be when she was making sure Angel stuck to the list of pregnancy do’s and don’ts. Sure, those recommendations had come from books smuggled from the mortal realm that were probably out of date and, even if they weren’t, had never meant to apply to spider demons. But Charlie had gotten to be a very scary nurse.
“I know, I know…” Husk’s eyes moved over to their two little bundles of blanket and dark fur, their four ears twitching in sleep, “I just…I can’t take my eyes off them, y’know? They’re so small and so perfect and…and I just need to protect them.”
More of the last night was coming back to Angel, as he cataloged the aches and pains that accompanied each moment. He remembered the first time he’d held Bella, the little girl and the first one to make her appearance, and the rush of emotions that had struck him, Joy, yes, enough that it outpaced any high he’d ever had, but fear too.
She’d been so small and delicate in his hands, all wet fur and high, keening cries and eyes she couldn’t open yet. As she’d laid on Angel’s chest and curled into him, somehow seeing him as safety and comfort, he’d realized how fragile she really was, now someone didn’t have to go through Angel to hurt her. He’d known then, with a heavy certainty, that if anything happened to her, it would break him beyond repair.
And then Howie, their son, had been born not breathing. It was like life was making sure he’d taken the hint, forcing Angel to live through those sickening minutes of silence and know that these fragile little things were part of him and without them, the whole thing would come down. Of course it had only been moments, thanks to a quick intervention from Charlie and Lucifer, but it was enough. Angel had survived so much, even kept on surviving after it had killed him, even when he wasn’t sure he wanted to keep going. But he wouldn’t survive losing them.
“I know how you feel,” was all he could say, groping for Husk’s hand again and holding on tight.
“It’s crazy, right?” Husk’s laugh was weak, a thin coating over a sob, “I keep thinking someone’s going to come in and take you and them away. Because an asshole like me was never meant to catch a break this lucky, someone two floors up filled out a form wrong and I got this life I never deserved. So I keep my eyes on them so…so I can remember how happy I felt when it’s gone.”
“Husk…” Angel scrambled to promise that he wasn’t going anywhere, that nothing in heaven or hell or anything in between was going to be able to take them away, to do something about the deep chasm of hurt he heard in his love’s voice.
But before he could even try, one of the swaddled lumps in the bassinet stirred, an eye opening for the very first time, a tiny golden coin dropped into their hands. It was Howie, wrapped in the little green blanket, now looking about ninety percent mouth as he cracked an enormous yawn, showing rows of tiny needle teeth. For a brief moment, Angel’s exhausted brain was glad he’d gotten rid of his tits a while back, these spiky little spiderlings would be strictly bottle fed.
“Oh,” Husk sounded more than a little relieved at the interruption of their new reality, moving towards the bassinet, “Don’t worry, baby, I’ll…”
Both his voice and his hands seemed to run out of steam in the same moment, stalling into nothing, like they knew what came next but something wouldn’t resolve. Like he’d reached the end of a chain around his neck, no more slack to pull on,
Howie blinked his gold and black eyes, pulling towards his daddy as much as he could while wrapped in a blanket and with no idea how to pilot his own limbs. When Husk didn’t get any closer, his sooty little form shuddered, breath hitching, gearing up towards a piercing cry.
“Husk…” Angel murmured, feeling like he wanted to cry himself, “Have you not held them yet?”
He knew the answer, he could remember now. It was Lucifer who’d caught them both, Charlie who’d held Bella while they’d waited for her brother, Angel himself who’d cradled them after that and wondered if this was why he’d been given two sets of arms. But Husk had just held him, surrounding their little family with his wings, giving them their own safe little world. Protecting, watching, adoring but leaving that distance.
Angel knew that fear reflected in Husk’s eyes, the same one he’d tasted when Lucifer handed him this tiny, terrified and terrifying ball of wet fur that now represented the possibility he’d carried inside himself for nine months.
The words came hard, like they scraped his throat raw on the way out, “I…I don’t know how. Every time I think about trying, I just see myself hurting them…”
Angel’s eyes followed Husk’s, to his long white fingers and the sharp points they ended in. Things that looked like they were made to kill, to threaten penniless rubes into one more hand that would take the last penny in their pocket, to grip a bottle of cheap whiskey. The two of them must be quite the sight, Angel thought. They sure as fuck didn’t look like parents, people fit to guard two miracles. They looked like exactly what they were, a porn star junkie and a washed up huckster, out of their depth and lost before they’d even really begun.
But they were parents. Neither of them had asked for this but Angel had chosen to see it through, Husk had chosen to stay by his side. And more than that, he’d carried him through so many of the roughest parts. Now it was time for Angel to repay the favor.
“Well, let’s figure it out together then?”
It felt like such a small thing, easing forward and resting his hand on Husk’s shoulder, a handful of words. But the look his husband gave him was everything.
It did take a bit of maneuvering, Husk pressing the points of his talons down under Howie and cradling him within them but they managed, Angel’s hands hovering gently underneath. Immediately their son’s unhappy squeaking turned into delighted purring, curling in against Husk’s chest the second he was close enough. A tiny tail thrashed so joyfully it was in danger of tangling in the blanket, a tiny set of wings beat, four limbs grasped hold of Husk’s fur and clung tightly, like this was all he’d been waiting for.
Husk’s expression said the same thing, tears already spilling down his narrow cheeks, “Damn…”
“See?” Angel’s voice was thick with his own tears, his smile so wide it hurt in the best way. He held Bella, who’d refused to be left out, stirring as soon as her brother was lifted up, “We just had to find our own way of doing it.”
“That’s the way it’s gonna be, huh?” Husk chuckled softly, thumb stroking the top of Howie’s head, “Figuring shit out as we go, hoping we can put out the fires we start?”
“Worked for us so fair, ain’t it?” Angel shrugged, grinning crookedly, “One foot in front of the other, try not to fuck it up and when we do…well, we just try and do better next time. Redemption and all that shit.”
Husk looked between Howie in his own arms and Bella in Angel’s, his voice softening, “I don’t know…all the good things in my afterlife have happened to me down here. If someone offered me redemption right now, I’d tell them to go fuck themselves. Nothing they got up there is better than this.”
Angel leaned in close until his head was resting against Husk’s shoulder, his free hand snaking around to rest over the paw that supported Howie’s back, wanting to be touching all of his family.
“No…no, they sure as hell don’t,” he murmured, “And we do deserve this. I know it doesn’t feel like it but we really do. These kids, they’re not a reward or punishment or anyone else’s call. They were our decision. So we deserve this and we need to fight for it like we do.”
He felt Husk’s lips brush the top of his head, pressing a firm kiss there, “You got it, baby. Together?”
Angel grinned entwining their fingers, “Together.”

The Girl Next Door
You hadn't been close with your neighbor Hazel for years. But you find her beat up in the locker room after fight club and all of that changes
Chapter 6
Isabel and Brittany question you about Hazel. Your best friends can’t help but try and push you and Hazel together, and it seems to be getting to your head. It almost seems like Hazel is treating you like more than a friend?
Word count: 4.2k
CW: Profanities, not beta read
It’s Saturday night, at Brittany’s house, with her and Isabel. Brittany is painting your nails your favorite color when she notices the beaded bracelet on your wrist.
“H?” she questions. “Why the letter H?”
“Oh. The H. It’s for Hazel, actually,” you explain, avoiding eye contact and praying your face isn’t flushed.
“Are you guys like-” Isabel starts with clear excitement but you cut her off. “No, it's not like that. Like at all. Not even a little. We were always best friends, and now we are again.”
“Ok, fine, I guess. But we had no idea you two even knew each other until like a week ago. What happened between you guys because I’ve literally never seen you two interact with each other before now? Did you do something? Did she do something? Was it the both of you? Whatever happened had to have been bad, so why are things ok all of the sudden?” Isabel looks both confused and concerned. It makes sense why your best friend would be unsure of what to make of this confusing situation. You don’t even fully understand it yourself.
You take a deep breath before coming clean. “I’ve been in love with Hazel since middle school. But right when I realized I had feelings for her, she pushed me away, and I never knew why. I was in so much pain so I forced myself to move on. Make new friends, and eventually get into a relationship. But even though I had convinced myself otherwise, I’ve been in love with her the whole time. I found her bloody in the locker room after fight club one day and I couldn’t just leave her there like that. We ended up talking and reconnecting. I eventually confronted her, so she explained everything to me. I don’t want to share stories that aren’t mine to tell, but I will say that she just thought she was doing what was best for me. She apologized and I couldn’t help but forgive her. I know that Hazel never meant to hurt me, and I love her too much to pass up the opportunity to have her back in my life. All those years it felt like a piece of me was missing, and I finally had a chance to put things back together. I don’t have her the way that I want her, but it’s so much better than not having her at all.”
“Oh, wow.” Brittany takes a deep breath. “I’m so sorry. I had no idea you had been through all of that. But are you sure that this is worth it? Hazel is a sweetheart, and she would never do anything to hurt you on purpose, but are you going to be hurting yourself?”
You run a hand through your hair and take a moment to think about it. This is kind of insane. You could potentially do some major damage to yourself. But there is nothing you want more than Hazel. “That’s a risk I’m willing to take.”
“Well if that’s the case I’m really happy for you. You guys would be so cute together.” Isabel claps enthusiastically.
You shake your head no at her. “Isabel, please, don’t get my hopes up like that. I have no reason to believe that she feels the same way about me. If anything I’ve got far more evidence for her not seeing me like that. I think she’s just happy to be friends again.”
“Hazel mentions you in the notes like all the time. Like way more than anyone else.” Brittany grins mischievously. You raise an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”
“The notes she takes every meeting and emails to everyone. Do you not get them?”
You wrinkle your nose and furrow your eyebrows. “I get them. I never noticed it. I'm sure you guys are exaggerating and didn’t even think about it until now.”
Brittany laughs. “We have been suspicious since the first time we saw you guys together. Do you not know what you look like when you look at her? Haven’t you seen the way that she looks at you?”
Isabel is quick to add “you guys started driving to school together even though you love your alone time, and remember that night you hung out at her house? You didn’t answer your phone for hours and that is so unlike you.”
Before you even get a chance to defend yourself Brittany throws at you what she believes to be some hard hitting evidence. “I have seen you guys fight each other. The sexual tension is so obvious. I have never seen two people pin each other to the ground so much. Especially not with that hungry look in their eyes.”
You are at a loss for words, so you close your eyes and flop backwards to lay down. Isabel pokes your leg. You don’t open your eyes but that doesn’t stop her from asking “were you there the day we were talking about celebrity crushes?”
“Nope.” You hear her giggle. “Well I didn’t make the connection until now, but you know that actress that everyone says you look like? That’s Hazel’s celebrity crush.”
You open your eyes and sit up, feeling defeated. “I’m sure it is just a coincidence.”
“You can believe what you want, but I’m still going to be shipping you guys so hard!” Isabel squeals.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Isabel and Brittany were not kidding when they said they would be rooting for you and Hazel. You appreciate their enthusiasm, but you would be mortified if Hazel noticed them giggling and watching you stand next to each other at the next fight club meeting. Isabel and Brittany’s eyes light up when you and Hazel are paired up for a fight. Your friend's stares were burning holes into the back of your head when you were on the ground straddling Hazel’s waist. This is only going to feed into their delusions. It seems useless at this point to hope they keep their eagerness in check.
It didn't take long for them to try and set you and Hazel up with each other, they took the first chance they got. You were unaware of their scheming until they approached you and Hazel at the end of fight club to see if you guys would want to get ice cream all together. “A little sweet treat before we all have to study for that math test tomorrow,” Isabel offers with a smile.
Brittany makes an excuse to take you with her in her car. “You forgot your shirt at my house, I need to give it back to you.” There was no shirt. Brittany just wanted to prepare you for what definitely isn’t a date, even though she seems to think it is.
Brittany glances over at you while she is driving. “Do you want to fix your hair?” She asks.
You squint your eyes at her. “Uhh.. why?”
She playfully rolls her eyes. “Don’t you want to look nice for your date with Hazel?”
That makes you laugh. “Brittany, it’s not a date if she doesn’t know that it’s a date.”
“You know what I mean. I have a hair brush in the glove box. There’s also some lipstick in there if you want to use it.”
“I’m not going to try and impress a girl who doesn’t want to be impressed”
“But isn’t it worth trying?” Without answering you pull the brush and lipstick out of the glove box and flip down the mirror.
Upon arrival, you and Brittany meet up with Hazel and Isabel before going inside. You enter first and approach the counter to order. After scanning your options you tell your friends “I can’t decide between cookies and cream and chocolate chip cookie dough.”
“Hey same!” Hazel smiles at you.
“If neither of you can decide between them, why don’t you just get both and share?” Isabel teases. God Isabel, right in front of Hazel?
“Oh… I, uh…” you begin but Hazel cuts you off. “Sounds like a good idea, right?” she asks expectantly. You just nod and force a smile. As much as you have protested it, you would love for this to be a date. But it's not, and you need to keep your expectations in check. Once the ice cream Hazel had ordered for the two of you is ready, you pull out your wallet only for her to step in front of you and pay for the whole thing without even asking. You blush and look away, accidentally making eye contact with Brittany who mouths “date” to you. Your palm meets your forehead. You really are grateful that your friends are trying to help you out, but you are going to have to explain to them that getting your hopes up will only make things worse in the end.
You intentionally sit next to Hazel, it will feel less romantic than being across from her. Not being able to stare longingly into her eyes is for the best. However, that didn’t keep you from questioning Hazel’s every move. Yes you were sharing food, but why did she sit so close to you? Seats nearly touching, practically shoulder to shoulder, knees brushing up against each other if moving more than an inch. Even worse, why did she put her arm around the back of your chair everytime she sat back to talk? Hazel talks a lot. If you weren't paying attention she would do it without you realizing and her arm would end up slung around your shoulders. You would sit there, absolutely mortified, while Isabel and Brittany failed to contain their excitement, though Hazel was none the wiser. You did your best to avoid looking over at her, that award winning smile and warm gaze far too easy to get lost in.
About halfway through the bowls of ice cream Hazel excuses herself to the bathroom.
Once Hazel is out of earshot Isabel slams her hands on the table and leans forwards. “Sooooooo…”
“So what?” You sigh.
“Come on, you know what she means,” Brittany crosses her arms and grins.
You put your hands up in the air like you have been cornered by the police. “I can’t say that I know what you guys are talking about.”
“This date!” The two yell in unison.
“Oh my god guys, could you please keep it down? I hate to break it to you, but if Hazel and I are on a date, then you two are on a date with each other. Just two best friends, eating some ice cream, that's all.”
“You are sharing ice cream!” Isabel exclaims, gesturing to the bowl in front of you.
You run your hands through your hair. “Because you suggested it.”
Brittany points to Hazel’s chair. “You guys are sitting so close together.”
“Well we're sharing the ice cream.”
“She keeps putting her arm around you!” Brittany sounds exasperated.
“You can’t ignore the way she looks at you!” Isabel pleads.
You put your hands down on the table in an attempt to further assert yourself. “If you keep getting my hopes up it's going to hurt even worse when she finally gets a girlfriend or in some other way makes it clear that she doesn't feel the same way.”
Brittany looks so disappointed. “We wouldn’t be trying to set you guys up if we didn't think there was something there.”
“I want this so bad,” slips out of your mouth as wild fantasies dance through your head.
“Maybe it's time that you give this a chance,” Isabel timidly suggests.
“I wouldn’t be opposed to it, but only if she took the lead,” you admit, nervously twisting your bracelet and averting your eyes.
Isabel and Brittany’s eyes wander behind you, so with panicked eyes you sharply run your hand past your throat, signaling that this conversation is officially being cut off.
Even though there is no way she could have known what had been discussed while she was gone, you are paranoid that Hazel somehow heard everything. You worry that the feelings left behind are written all over your face. Fortunately,  nothing goes wrong as you all finish eating.
After cleaning up you are the only one to sit back down at the table. The other girls look at you, confused. You tilt your head back and groan. “I do not want to go home and study for this test. It's going to be miserable.”
“Well how much have you studied so far?” Hazel questions.
“Not enough,” you sigh. Hazel steps towards you and takes your hand. You can’t even imagine how unfortunate the look on your face is right now. She pulls you up to your feet. “Just think,” she tries to encourage you,”by this time tomorrow it will be over, right?”
“Yeah, I guess you are right.” You concede, expecting her to let go of your hand at that point, but she doesn't. Hazel holds your hand all the way to the car, and doesn’t let go until she has opened up the passenger side door and you have made yourself comfortable.
You can hardly believe it, but maybe Isabel and Brittany are onto something? Like this is absolutely mind boggling and insane. Is this even possible, or a mere delusion? Furthermore, are you actually starting to get your hopes up? You are playing a dangerous game, but you reap what you sow.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Last night you studied like your life depended on it, and it was exhausting. In the morning you hit the snooze button as many times as you can without the risk of being late, sacrificing a part of your morning routine each time you slammed on the button to make the blaring noise stop. In the end you walked out the door without a stitch of makeup in the sweatpants and sweatshirt you wore to bed.
You meet Hazel in your driveway. When you unlock the car’s doors she gets in right away. You open the door but stop to groan and pout. “I really don’t want to do this,” you whine to Hazel and she smiles and shakes her head. “Oh neither do I.”
“Then why don’t we just skip? We could stay home and binge watch something,” you suggest, half serious and half not.
Hazel sighs. “I literally couldn’t want anything more.” Your breath hitches. “But, we both studied so much that it would be a waste to miss the test. Not to mention that your mom would kill the both of us if she found out that we skipped school.” Hazel leans over the center console and reaches her hand towards you. You take it and let her pull you into the car. You are very aware of how you keep finding your hand in hers. Are you unhappy about this test? Obviously. Are you slightly exaggerating because it means Hazel might hold your hand? That’s not even a question.
You hesitate to start the car, so Hazel gently places her hand on your thigh. She tilts her head to the side, carefully observing you with a dreamy look in her eyes. Her hand placement was more than enough to snap you out of your mood. But the way she was looking at you? That just might make you risk it all. You fight off the urge to lean over and steal a kiss from the girl you love.
When you turn the key in the ignition you are expecting Hazel to pull away, so you are pleasantly surprised when she doesn’t. Previously, you would have shied away from moments like these, but Isabel and Brittany have really gotten inside of your head.
“If you want you can come hang out at my place after school. We can watch an old movie.” Hazel proposes.
You look over and meet her gaze and a smile spreads across your face. “I would love that.”
------------------------------------------------------------------
Hazel catches up with you on the way out of class after your test, putting her arm around your shoulders, causing a shock to your system. Though it’s a pleasant surprise, it isn’t easy to play it cool.
“So, how do you think you did?” Hazel smiles at you, looking at your… lips? You look down at your feet because you fear internal combustion, though still able to feel Hazel’s lingering gaze.
You are so nervous that you stutter when you answer her question. “I-I um think I actually d-did well. How about you?”
“I’m going to be honest, I was a little distracted. I was thinking about, well, things. But I still think I managed to pull it off.” Despite her claims of having been distracted, she sounds rather excited and you can’t miss the opportunity to see that look on her face, so your eyes wander back up to meet hers. That cute goofy smile is more than enough to put all the stress from this test behind you. In all honesty, Hazel could erase just about anything from your mind. You know that your own expression must be mirroring hers. “Well I’m glad that you made it through okay.”
Hazel nods at you. “I’ve got to go but I’ll see you later?”
“Yeah of course.”
Hazel pulls away from you, running her hand down your arm. The light graze of her fingertips momentarily lingers on your hand before finally drifting away and waving as she walks off. Hazel continues to look back at you until she stumbles into someone and has to turn her attention ahead of her.
------------------------------------------------------------------
When you get to Hazel’s house Mrs. Callahan is delighted to see you, and invites you to sit down with her. Hazel rolls her eyes and leans against the doorway with her arms crossed. You smirk as an image of what Hazel would look like doing THE lean crosses your mind. When you sit down next to Mrs. Callahan she slides a magazine over to you.
“I want you to have this. You don’t have to look at it now, but there is a spread that starts on page 17, it’s from one of my favorite designers and every outfit would look absolutely amazing on you! Check it out when you get the chance and definitely keep this in mind the next time you want to do some shopping.” Mrs. Callahan is beaming at you. Hazel has always been a tomboy so she loved talking about fashion with you and would join you and your mom on shopping trips.
You thank her and then Hazel clears her throat, so you start to get up.
“Can I ask you a quick question?” Mrs. Callahan asks.
“Of course.”
She leans and whispers, just low enough for Hazel not to be able to hear, “you’ve put that ex girlfriend of yours behind you, correct?”
Your eyes widen, taken off guard by the personal question. “Oh yeah, she's no longer a part of my life,” you explain, doing your best to keep your voice down because it’s clear she wants this conversation to be private.
Mrs. Callahan looks satisfied and you can only assume that your mother had divulged the details of your tumultuous relationship. She continues with her hushed tone “you deserve much better than the way that girl treated you, honey. I don’t think you will have to look too far to find the right girl for you.”
“We should head upstairs,” Hazel calls over impatiently.
“I’m actually heading out now. I won’t be back until pretty late.” Mrs. Callahan informs you. Hazel grumbles a goodbye and you wave before she walks out the door.
“I’m going to put my stuff in my room, I’ll be right back,” she tells you before disappearing up the stairs.
After entering the living room a feeling of nostalgia washes over you. There are so many memories here of blanket forts, movie nights, and playing games. After leaving your things in the corner you sit down all the way to the side of the couch, right up against the arm rest. It’s not long before Hazel appears in front of you, “Do you know what you want to watch?” You suggest a movie and Hazel thinks it’s a great idea.
She takes a seat in the center of the couch, as if to give you some space, while also testing the waters of trying to get close to you. You aren’t quite sure how you feel about this yet, but decide to live in the moment. While looking at the tv, out of the corner of your eye, you see that Hazel is watching you. She looks a little dazed, eyes soft, biting her lip. When you look over to her she quickly snaps her head towards the tv.
The movie is lighthearted but anytime you and Hazel look at each other the eye contact is intense. Whether you are laughing at a joke or reciting a quote in unison you kept getting caught up in the moment. The part of the movie you were reacting to would pass, but you would still be gazing into her beautiful eyes, and she would be staring right back. Then, the two of you would realize what you were doing and regain your composure.
You start to feel cold so you get up to get the sweatshirt you have in your backpack.
“Where are you going?” Hazel questions, and you peer over your shoulder at her. There is disappointment in her eyes, seeing you walk away.
“Just grabbing my sweatshirt,” you reassure her.
“Are you cold?” She asks, looking concerned, and you nod your head.
“I’ve got a blanket right here, if you want to use that instead,” Hazel offers, gesturing to a blanket hanging over the back of the couch.
“Uh, sure. Thanks.” You take your spot back on the couch and Hazel passes you the blanket.
“I think I’m actually cold too, would you mind sharing?” She inquires, fixing her hair even though it looks fine.
You blink rapidly, a little taken back. “No, not at all.”
“Is it ok if I, uh, sit a little closer? It would be easier to share,” Hazel asks, looking down and fidgeting with one of her rings.
You nod your head at her once again, feeling nervously excited. Hazel slides over and when she said close she meant close, she left no space between the two of you. Shaky hands drape the blanket across your laps. You feel your heart pounding in every part of your body. Isabel and Brittany’s idealistic thinking has infected your brain. Should you make a move to see how she reacts or wait and see if she does? You decide to wait and see if she takes any initiative. You meant it when you said you wanted
Hazel doesn’t leave you waiting for long. She rests her arm behind you, on the back of the couch, like she is inviting you into her. You obviously take the bait. There was no space to close between you but you lean your weight into her and rest your head on her shoulder. Hazel then wraps her arm around your waist, holding you against her. It all feels like a dream, breathing in her scent, feeling the warmth of her body next to yours. You are buzzing from the way her hand is firmly planted on your waist. Her voice is like a melody and her laugh is like a warm hug. You savor every moment with her.
After the movie is over, and you are getting ready to go, Hazel puts her hand on your arm. “You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to, but what did my mom whisper to you earlier?”
“Oh, she just asked about my ex.”
“She asked you about what?”
“My ex.”
“Sorry, I heard you the first time, I just can’t believe she would bring that up, I told her not to.” Hazel sighs.
“What do you mean that you told her not to? Have you been discussing my love life Hazel Callahan?” You laugh at her. You aren’t mad, just intrigued.
“Your mom had told my mom about your break up, so she came to me to try and get more information. She was really worried about whether or not you were ok. I told her that I wasn’t totally sure, because we hadn’t talked much about it. But she knows that I wanted us to be, uh, friends again, so she was very hopeful that you were in the right place for us to start a- I mean start over. My mom would bring you up from time to time over the years, hoping we would be friends again. When I explained to her that it was hard to tell whether or not you were also in, uh, the right place for that, she told me that we are meant to be, I guess friends, so the opportunity would present itself.”
You smile, feeling a flush across your face, knowing that Hazel has always intended to get you back in her life.
“Well, I am doing ok. I know a lot has happened between us, but I have a feeling that things are going to work out the way they are supposed to.”

You don’t understand him. In the short time you’ve known him, he’s like a square that’s trying to fit into a circle. The circle is too round to accommodate his sharp edges, but he somehow manages to get just half of the square through, even if the circle is struggling to contain it.
Not to mention the weird things that’s happened within the half hour you’ve been awake, things he’s yet to explain to you. Matter of fact, strange things has been happening since you left Abigail. The police officer, the fog, and whatever the hell was out there in it with you. You’re not even sure if that was real either.
You feel like if you focus on it, you’ll go crazy. So your mind does the only thing it can do to protect itself – pushes it away into a corner to mull over later along with everything else.
“I’d rather not.” You no longer feel the need to show him gratitude. You feel stupid, for one, why did you think trusting a random stranger would be a good thing?
Hoseok shrugs, dropping the half-eaten toast back onto the plate. He walks around you, close enough that the hairs on the back of your neck stands on end, that the warning bells are going crazy in your head again.
It’s uncomfortable being this close. The reaction is visceral, unable to ignore and you wonder why you hadn’t felt it the night before. Why you’d manage to follow him all the way here and not noticed. Maybe you had, briefly and in little moments that were small enough for you to brush them off.
You watch him watch you as he circles you like a vulture, “What are you?”
“Would you believe me if I said I was human?” He asks from behind you, and it feels like a terrible idea to have your back to him. He sounds amused, like this is nothing but a little game to him – just something to pass time while he’s bored.
As he rounds your right, your eyes meet the darkness of his. “You’re not.” It would be strange if you still thought he was after everything that’s happened already.
Hoseok hums, a twinkle lighting his eyes, “Perceptive, aren’t we?” There’s something like pride in his voice but you’re not sure what it’s for, “What do you think I am?”
“You expect me to guess correctly?” The difference in your height does nothing to stop you from glaring at him. He tilts his head at you, dark locks of his hair swaying against his forehead gently.
“No.” Hoseok smiles, “But it’ll make things interesting. I like games; play along.”
A shiver runs down your spine at his tone and the darkness in his eyes. He takes a step away from you and it feels like you can finally take a breath. His movements are fluid as he pulls the dining chair out from below the table. He sits gracefully, propping his chin in his palm as he watches you expectantly.
“Do you want a hint?” He asks, smiling sweetly.
“Why don’t you just tell me?” Your voice was barely above a whisper. You’re tired of whatever game he’s playing at, sick of the fear that keeps you standing still as he stares you down.

Chapter Twenty-Six / Masterlist
Tumblr media
What are you doing here Y/N? Your mind raced as you peered out your windshield at the old brick building with a sign that said Big Jon’s Boxing.
You should wait till Curtis can come with you.
You were petrified, the gym was so daunting, but you wanted to prove that you didnt need Curtis to just come here.
Gyms were a nightmare for you, you had seen the videos people would post of bigger people working out. That was probably your biggest fear, a video of you plastered all over the internet while you struggled. You could hear Jake’s snickering laugh at your expense, the one he used whenever you embarrassed yourself in front of one of his friends.
“She can’t be brilliant all the time, can you Babe?”
“Whatever Jake, shut the hell up.” You whispered out loud to no one really, just an attempt to drive his voice out of your head.
You can do this, You want to do this.
You prepped talk yourself while pushing the door open and stepping into the parking lot.
After all, you are just checking it out today, nothing else.
You stepped into a well-lit area, wide open full of equipment and a few boxing rings scattered around. People milled around, minding their business and never glancing at where you awkwardly stood and looked around. Upbeat music played from various speakers scattered around and a few televisions were hanging above equipment with the screens fixed on different channels.
A nearby desk had a large older man sitting behind it, on his computer when he looked around it to where you were standing. “Hi, can I help you?”
You stepped towards the desk, giving a light shrug of your shoulder. “I’m just checking the place out. My boyfriend said this gym was the place to go to learn some self-defense moves.”
“We can certainly do that here, we offer some one-on-one courses or group sessions. Who is your boyfriend? He sounds like a regular here.”
“He was, his name is Curtis Everett.”
“Oh ho, Curtis! You tell him Big Jon has been wondering where the hell he has gone off to. Grey told me he met someone.” He grinned as he held out his hand towards yours to shake. Your hand felt swallowed in his as you returned the gesture. “How is he doing?”
“Oh, he is doing good, busy as always.” You said with a small smile. It was hard not to with this man’s energy. Big Jon certainly did remind you of Grey, his presence calming even though he was more vocal than your friend was. Warm eyes twinkled and the lines creased on his face as you two started talking more about Curtis.
“That sounds about right. I’ve never known him to sit around doing nothing. Always got something happening.”
“That certainly is Curtis.”
Big Jon hummed in agreement, his large arms folding over his chest and leaning back slightly against his desk. “So self-defense, smart of you to learn.” He reached behind him and grabbed a pamphlet. “Of course feel free to check out the facilities and take this with you, think over what best suits you.”
You took the pamphlet with a soft thank you. “I will be sure to.” Behind you more people came in, splitting off to talk to Big Jon. You took that moment to walk around, and get a feel for the atmosphere. Everyone was just stuck in their own headspace, mostly ignoring you or giving a brief glance as you passed by.
Maybe this isn’t so bad. You finally admitted to yourself after your tour, returning to the car and sliding in behind the wheel while your thoughts started to gain more confidence. Doesn’t even have to be a class, I can get Curtis to teach me after all. You glanced down at the gym membership card now in your hand. I did it.
This was a huge moment, you felt the exhilaration of facing this fear after a lifetime of being self-conscious about even stepping into a gym. The last time you had, Jake had made you feel so bad about trying that you had quit that very day. But not this time, this time you weren’t worried that Curtis would have some snide remark about you trying. If anything, he was going to be just as thrilled for you as you were.
Already feeling better about the whole idea of joining a gym, you started the car to head back to Curtis’s house for the night.
Tumblr media
You were just coming down the stairs after a shower when you heard Curtis’s truck pull into the driveway. Within moments his heavy steel toe boots were thumping on the steps and the front door was opening to let him in. Your steps down went a little faster, causing him to glance up from where he was unlacing his boots to watch you come down the stairs.
Dark brows shot up with interest and his blue eyes seemed to drink you in as the sundress he had picked out for you swayed around your thighs.
The little tingle of pride in making him pause zipped up your spine and gave you a buzz. “Honey, you look…”
“Cute?” You asked with a teasing tone, pausing on the last step, giving you an advantage of being closer in height when Curtis straightened.
“Cute is used when you cocooned yourself in the blankets and I have to unravel you out while you’re protesting the entire time,” Curtis smirked as he finished getting his boots off and with silent stocking feet approached that bottom step. Letting his hands flow along the curves of your hips while he brought you close to the step edge, leaving almost no space between the two of you while your arms went over his shoulders and you fiddled with the chain at the back of his neck.
“Oh god, that is not cute.” Your nose wrinkled at the image, knowing fully how you just weren’t a morning person, no way you could be cute at that moment.
“I say it is. No, right now you are beautiful and sexy as hell wearing my dress that I picked out for you.” His hands wrapped suddenly around the back of your thighs, at some point he had been able to sneak them just under your dress and with a yelp of surprise from you, he wrapped them around his waist.
“Curtis James!” You clutched at him while he gave a huff of a laugh at your response but started kissing all the sensitive spots on your neck, starting right at your racing pulse and then down towards your shoulder. “One day you’re gonna-”
“If I hurt my back, then that is on me Honey.” He was quick to cut you off your protest, clearly enjoying having made you wrap around him even if you protested. “You do realize I will never get tired of doing this to you.”
You giggled, allowing your actual happiness to take over any of your worries as your hands loosened on his upper back and you let them slide up over his shoulders and along his neck to cup his bristled face. “Guess what I did today?” You pressed a kiss to his lips, teasing him with light nips that made him groan deeply while trying to keep you in contact. You managed to pull away again to see a flush start to rise on his neck and the tips of his ears redden.
“Mmhh, what did my Pretty Girl do?” Curtis rumbled out as his fingers flexed into a tighter hold on the back of your thighs.
“I went to check out that gym you suggested. Met Big Jon and got a membership.” Your grin spread as you said it, showing him just how happy you were about it.
Curtis gave a whoop and spun enough to make your dress flare out, your outburst of a laugh melding with his praise. “Honey, you’ve made my day.” There was no missing his kiss this time, making everything in you tingle, your fingers curling around his cheeks to hold on and keep up. Within seconds your toes touched the floor as he let you lower back to a stand. “Honestly Y/N, I am so fucking proud of you for this.”
You gave a shy little shrug, the praise making you feel good and it was still such a new feeling for you. “I figured it was time.”
“Hey…” His fingers brushed against your chin, tilting you up to meet his gaze. “If it’s what you want, then it’s time.” He said firmly and you nodded to confirm that this was what you wanted and nothing else.
“Cross my heart.” You made the motion across your chest, his eyes teasing as they dropped to watch the criss cross of fingers across your cleavage.
He rumbled a bit, his tone dropping in timbre. “Quit distracting me.” Curtis teased, letting his fingers trace over your collarbone and darting in to press his lips to yours once more.
You managed to mutter between his swift kisses. “One more thing, before we get too carried away.” Your hand pressed against his firm chest and he immediately paused with an arch of his brow to have you continue with your request.
“You’re right. I should go take a shower.” He suddenly muttered, looking down at himself covered in some grime and grease from his day at the trainyard. “Shit, I wasn’t thinking Honey.” He swiftly apologized but you fisted your hand in his shirt before he could pull away.
“You know I don’t give a shit about that. Can you take me down the cellar to see what you have down there for workout equipment?”
“Of course, Honey.” He grabbed his lunch bag and your hand to lead you into the kitchen, depositing his bag by the sink. “It's a bit of a clutterfuck down there though. Some of Gram and Gramp’s very dated furniture made its way down there and I just haven’t hauled it away yet.”
You rolled your eyes playfully at him, letting him lead you down the old wooden stairs while artificial overheads started to flicker on below you. “I’m not one to judge, my apartment is currently a disaster.”
Curtis gave a chuckle while he worked his way down, you following behind him carefully. You glanced around the space as this was your first time coming down and indeed was a bit of clutter, but you could see that he had one section cleaned out around the furnace and their was a small section of that squared off with a workout bench and a dusty punching bag. A frame of weights stood near the bench, neatly aligned weights by size. When you were able to glance at the amount of weights still attached to the bar, your eyes widened a bit, from a quick count of numbers, he was certainly lifting more than you weighed.
“Holy shit…” You muttered and Curtis glanced at you to see you adding on your fingers just to be sure. Again that red crept up his neck and his hand clasped at the back of his neck, rubbing at it.
It was rare to see Curtis get a bit bashful and it made you grin. “I mean, that was back last summer Honey, I don’t know about doing that much now.”
“It probably wouldn’t be safe to just jump back into it.” You agreed while he worked some of the weights off the bar, your head tilting to admire the way his back flexed under his shirt during the process, and gave a wistful sigh at the view.
Curtis gave you a knowing look as he wiped the dust off the bench and sat down while flexing his hands before laying back to inhale deeply. You did the math from the amount of weights left on the bar and your eyes widened a bit. “Curtis you sure about…”
“I’m fine Honey.” His hands fitted on the bar and moved to lift it off the frame. Your breath held with apprehension at first, he claimed he was fine, he certainly lifted you plenty of times even though you would protest, but you also knew that sometimes his back would spasm and you would hate for him to hurt himself.
Curtis didn’t seem to struggle though. Sure all the muscles in his shoulders and chest tightened with the effort. Your worry melded into arousal at the view while, at the same time you felt almost envious in the way he was able to so easily lift that weight in such a fluid motion, like it was an ease for him. All too soon he was putting the bar back and pushing back up to a sit.
His brow arched at you, his knowing smile flirting with his slightly pink-tinged face from his workout. “Com’ere Pretty Girl.” Patting his thigh with his palm. You took a breath and approached him, glancing at his thigh with trepidation before moving to straddle him while his hands slid around to rest on the fullness of your backside. “Tell me what you were just thinking about.”
Your arms slipped over his broad shoulders, your fingers brushing against the back of his neck to brush against the hairs there. Your gaze roamed his curious face, mapping out the slight arrangement of freckles darting across his nose to his dark lashes that were almost sinful to be on a man. Dropping to the soft pink of his lips among the darkness of his trimmed beard. “I was admiring how incredibly fine you are.”
Your head dipped to his, your nose trailing against his while breathing in deeply, his cologne heightened cause he was heated up a bit more. You whispered as you pressed your lips to his. “You also smell really good.”
Curtis shifted a bit, his hands finding a stronger hold on your ass while arching you closer into him. His cerulean blues darkened slightly, the air around the two of you charging with arousal. “I should have brought you down here sooner.” He grunted while your hands slid back over his shoulders and down his chest, your hand fisting in his tee to tug it over his head.
“Yes, you should because damn if that wasn’t a turn-on.” You said earnestly as your hand twisted in his chain and you arched in close, your mouth finding his and giving a searing kiss. He ground you into him again, this time a lot harder against you, his hips pushing up to meet you. You whimpered into his mouth, your pussy starting to throb and grow wet with need to have him. You could taste him, his smell permeated your senses and made your entire mind grow fuzzy with desire. As dirty as he was from his day at work, it was now driving you mindless. You tugged at his pants while a hand slapped at your ass, making you sting.
Your dress was tugged away, roughly while your nails streaked down to grab at his belt, working it open. “How much do you like these leggings Pretty Girl?” Curtis just about growled out as your bra got yanked down, his mouth finding its way between your cleavage, the graze of his beard rough against them, and you chased after that feeling.
“These leggings?” You said with a gasp, wriggling your hips in an urgency. “Burn them off if you gotta Curtis.”
His moan vibrated into your chest where his face was buried, kissing and worshipping your breasts while he had them exposed to his tongue and teeth. You got his pants yanked open enough to pull his cock out, stroking it with one hand while you moved the other to grab at the back of his head, keeping him pressed in against you.
Everywhere you felt him nip with sharp teeth his tongue soothed the sting away and left you wanting more. His cock throbbed in your hand as you moved it just how he liked it, the slight squeezes and speeding up to give him the friction, your thumb collecting the small beads of precum collecting to suck off the pad of your finger, humming with eagerness. Curtis pulled up, taking in how your lips parted to suck, his fingers digging into your leggings like they were now pissing him off.
“No one knows just how dirty you can be, do they?” His tone dropped, a whole hunger burning in his voice as you smirked at him, popping your thumb from your mouth, now cleaned of the pearly droplets. Your hips were yanked, the fabric giving away as easily as if he was opening a present.
“Only for you Curtis.” You teased, giving a slight cry as his fingers stroked along your soaked panties, your head falling back to be able to focus on how your body was weeping to be fucked, how his fingers were pushing between slick folds to tease you to something greater than the need you were in now. Curtis was pushing up into your hand, fucking him with your touch just as he was starting to with you, his fingers thick as they filled your needy, weeping hole.
“Hell yes only for me.” Possessively intimate in his touch, your pussy squelching as they squeezed his fingers stroking you, touching you in the way only he could, your hips started bouncing up and down on him, one hand still on his cock, jerking him off while the other braced against his shoulder, nails digging in to get the leverage needed to ride his fingers. “Your wet needy hole needed to be filled by me, Pretty Girl.” Your head nodded to confirm as your moans of his name got louder. “So fucking messy and perfect riding my fingers. But I want you coming all over my cock as I fill that greedy hole.”
“Curtis, please.” Now that he put that image in your head, you needed more than his fingers bringing you to the edge. Pulling up enough to slide his cock between your thighs, you waited long enough for him to move his hand and then started to sink down, stretching you open and making you gasp at the burn. He was always going to stretch you, and you welcomed that feeling of him seeming to sink into your wanting pussy for so long.
“Thatta girl, you can take me.” His messy hand grasped the roll on your hip, pulling you down onto him. “Always just swallow my cock, fuck.” He hissed as he pushed up, meeting you with a pounding thrust.
It was just what you needed, bouncing now to meet him Your hands grabbed at one another to hold on, his grunts of effort were matched with your panting moans. Your body went tacky with sweat as your movements became rushed. Your pussy wept around his pounding cock, sucking him in as he hit your sweet spot over and over.
His mouth found yours, swallowing your moans as his own while you started to break for him, crying with a sharp plea. Wave after wave of pleasure consumed you, making you lose your rhythm as you fell into his chest, clinging to him. His touch turned harder, moving your body to ease you through as you buried your face into his shoulder. “Got you, Honey.” His words slurred, his movements turning rushed and desperate.
Your head lifted, your lips brushing against his ear as your arms slipped around his neck to hold onto him. “I need you Curtis, fill me up and let me feel full of you.” Your voice was soft against him, gentle quiet pleads that were all for Curtis. “You are so good at making me satisfied.”
You teased his earlobe, nibbling and kissing along the shell, he wrapped you tighter to his hold while your legs trembled and you sank in against him letting him support you. He groaned loud, muttering a curse while warm sticky cum filled you, making you hum with satisfaction that not only did you come, but he did too.
Your touch on his skin was everywhere, stroking your fingers against tensed quivering muscles and letting him hide against you for support as you did him several times, murmuring how much you love him for making you feel so safe and satisfied with him.
“I love you so much, Curtis.” You pressed kisses against his shoulder, letting your head rest in the crook of his neck, soaking in the moment. It didn't matter where you two were, it could be in the lush bed of the hotel in Florida or his dusty cluttered basement, it always felt so good being this way with him, it always ended with you feeling worshipped and satisfied.

“You got this Y/N, you're not going for power right now but just hitting in the same spot.” Grey held up his padded hands in front of you as you focused on the center of his palm and lashed out. You felt weak in your movements though, unsure as you hit against his hands one after the other, alternating which arm was throwing the punch.
“I feel like I’m not gaining any progress.” You sighed with frustration, pulling back to run your hand against your forehead to wipe away the sweat and catch your breath. Grey loosened one of the gloves, pulling it off.
“More than you think, you're more consistently hitting and a lot harder too.” His palm flexed to get the sting out. “I know it seems to take forever to notice any change though.”
You tried to take Grey’s words to heart as you wandered to your water bottle to grab a drink, leaning against the ring ropes for a breather. Your gaze fell on Curtis not too far away, his stance wide-legged as he mimicked what you were just doing, only he was hitting a heavy bag, making it swing. You hadn’t even managed to get that thing to move with your punches.
The back of his shirt clung to his upper back, dark with sweat and you could see the flush of red on the back of his neck creeping up. It didn’t escape you that you were openly admiring the scene before you and tried to subdue it a bit. But it was hard not to, what could you say… Curtis was fucking hot when he was focusing on his workout.
You still had yet to see him in the ring boxing with another opponent, claiming he was too out of shape for anything like that for now.
“Hey Curtis…” Grey called out as he started working his way out of the ring. “I gotta go pick up Soph, you wanna come take over?”
You noticed the immediate change in Curtis, his stance relaxing, shaking out his arms, and all that coiled forced power fading from notice. “Yeah… Tell my niece I will see her this weekend.”
Grey grabbed his stuff, ready to head off to the locker room. “According to Ella, she hasn’t stopped talking about you guys taking her to that butterfly exhibit.” Grey waved a hand at you in goodbye, you mimicked the move back at him.
“We’re excited to take her.” You took another sip of water, feeling your breathing start to slow back to normal.
“Keep up the good work Y/N, remember every little bit is progress!” Grey shouted over his shoulder as he disappeared. Curtis pulled himself up, slipping onto the mat while fitting on gloves.
“He is right Honey. You are stronger already.” Curtis looked you up and down, just as obvious as when you checked him out. “Still need a breather?”
You glared at him as he gave a slight grin at your expression, You were dripping sweat, hair mattered and although he was red-faced and had beads dotting his hairline on his forehead, he looked still fresh. But your breathing had gone steadier and you didn’t feel that wobble in your arms as much.
“Put them up.”
Curtis hissed in approval, eyes flashing proudly as he lifted his mitted hands, ready to block you.
“That's my girl… Don’t hold back.” You went to hit, but at the last second, you veered off, unable to make contact. Your arm jerked away, not wanting to smack the gloves held up for you.
“Damn it.” You pulled back with hesitation and Curtis shrugged it off, thinking you simply just missed.
“It’s okay Honey.” He repositioned himself to prepare for you. “Try again.”
Your nose wrinkled a bit as you tried zeroing on his hands, ignoring that you were about to hit Curtis. But you couldn’t, it was still blaring in your head and when you threw your hands into the hit, they weakly plunked off of his hands. “Ugh!” you huffed frustrated as you turned away from Curtis, putting space between you.
His own hands dropped, concern marring his features. “What’s wrong? Are you tired cause we can call it a day.”
“No, I’m not tired.” You bounced around on the heels of your toes to try to shake the anxiety that was building in your chest. Your whispers muttering to yourself. “Just do it Y/N, stop being this way, stop being weak.”
Hearing you talk to yourself bothered Curtis, the way you were so harsh to yourself. You hadn’t done that in a long time and he wasn’t about to let you continue. “Hey Baby, Look at me.” His tone was a command more than a request, he gripped at the velcro tie on one hand with his teeth and ripped it open to shake his hand out. Within a step he was standing in front of you, his freed hand cupping your cheek enough to stop you. You averted your eyes for a moment, anger making them darker but finally they flitted up to him with regret. “Deep breath in, please.”
You almost defied him, but you softened and let the air fill your lungs and his deep timbre requested an out, your exhale giving a bit of relief to all the thoughts racing in your head. “Sorry… I-I” You fizzled out a bit. Your hands went to his other glove, working it open. “You should take this off.”
He pulled his hand away from your grasp enough so you couldn’t take it off. “Talk to me Honey, what just happened.” Curtis's head tilted closer, keeping the conversation between just the two of you. His fingers brushed against your cheek, pulling his thumb away enough to show the glisten of frustrated tears at the end. “I want to help you through this.”
You struggled a moment with it, finally admitting your downfall. “I can’t hit you Curtis. I just can’t, when I even think of hitting you it makes me feel sick.”
“You’re not hitting me though Honey, this is practice. You’re not going to hurt me.” He pointed out the obvious, an arm easing around you and you stepped in closer to let your face press against his damp chest and sigh against it while you felt supported.
“It feels like it though and I can’t bring myself to follow through with what Grey has been teaching me.”
A heavy hand rubbed at your back, now that it was out there, you couldn’t just take it back. You were sure Curtis found this just as ridiculous as you.
He is gonna think you are trying to get out of exercising. That you’re fat and unwilling to make the effort. Just listen to your breath when doing the minimum.
That nasty voice plagued you, sounding so much like Jake that you felt your shame flare up all over again.
But his hand never stopped and finally, he tipped you back up to look at him. “Okay, I get it. If you asked me to do that, I would stress about that too.”
“You don’t think I’m being stupid?” You sniffled a bit and he shook his head, now brushing your loosened hair back from your face.
“No, I don’t ever think that Honey. You wouldn’t be this upset if it didn’t matter. Let’s try something else- together.” Curtis added, sweeping down to grab at the glove he had discarded earlier and led you to the edge of the ring, helping ease you out. “There is plenty of equipment here, you can punch on all that instead.” He winked at you and already you could feel the knot in your chest start to loosen up.
Curtis ended up taking you across the gym to a punching dummy, masculine in its features.
You reached out to touch it, the material firm but had some give. “Yeah, I can hit on this.”
“Mmh, I thought so.” His arm was slung around your shoulder while you explored the dummy. You gave a bit of a punch to see how it felt, grinning when you felt it sway just a bit.
“Just imagine this is that prick from the bar or your ex.” He whispered against your ear before stepping back. This time when your arm swung back, the force you hit it made it sway back. “Like a champ Honey.”
His praise replaced that anxious feeling.
Tumblr media
“Remember the hammer strike Y/N?” Grey asked from the side of the ring, Edgar standing before you while Curtis watched from the opposite side. You looked confident while Edgar jokingly teased.
“Be easy on me.”
Curtis grinned as you flashed a smirk, sensing the way your muscles were tightening as you prepared the move Grey was asking for.
“Scared Edgar?”
“Maybe a little!” He made like he was going to attack you, but you were quick on your feet, dancing back a step and striking out for his head. The helmet he was wearing blocked your attack, but you kept at it, making him back up till Grey clapped his hands together sharply to have you break apart from him.
It was a stroke of genius on Tanya’s part to suggest Edgar after Curtis was talking to Grey about how it went after he had left. He never went into details about what happened, but simply said that you had conflicting feelings about practicing the self-defense on him.
Tanya’s hint was not so subtle when she turned towards Edgar who was sneaking out a donut from the box on her desk meant for the break room. “Have Y/N practice on Edgar, you would do it, right?” She arched a brow at Edgar like she dared him to say no. “Do anything to help out, I just know you would Edgar.”
“Uh-” Edgar stuttered, being put right on the spot. “Sure, I mean of course I would. I haven’t been to Big Jon’s in ages anyway.” The donut getting crammed into his mouth quickly.
“Good man.” Tanya smirked, clapping a hand on his back.
At first, you had balked at the idea, not wanting to hit him either but Curtis was able to convince you. Last Halloween also might have been a lasting memory about why you wanted to rough Edgar up a bit. You finally relented, far more enthusiastic about training with Edgar’s assistance.
Now Curtis saw your confidence build as Grey moved you through the moves, eventually ending with you dragging Edgar down onto the mat after escaping from a bear hug, you were gasping for breath, sweat running down your face as you put your hands to your knees for a second to catch your breath, but you looked triumphant.
A big booming clap sounded right next to Curtis, making him glance over in surprise at Big Jon slamming his hands together. “Damn, that was a sight to see! Edgar getting whooped all over the ring. Good job Sweetheart.”
The grin on your face got wider as you wiped your arm across your forehead, a bit of bashfulness but happiness making you squeak out. “Thank you Jon.”
“She is doing incredible.” Jon said a lot gentler while you reached for Edgar’s hand, helping him back to a stand and retreating to grab some water.
Curtis hummed in agreement. “That’s because she is. She overcame a lot to come here for this. I’m so proud of my girl.” He pulled himself up into the ring, leaving behind Big Jon for the moment while stalking across the mat.
You were cleaning yourself up when you flung the towel around your neck, holding onto the ends as you gave him that questioning grin. “What did you think?” Your teeth snagged at your bottom lip, nervous about what he would say.
“Fucking badass is what I think Honey.” His voice was deeper than normal, his eyes darkening as his hands rested on your hips, dragging you in close. With a dip of his head towards your ear, his beard grazing along your cheek while whispering. “Driving me insane watching you, I’m not going to make it back home till I have to fuck you.”
Your eyes went wide and excitement fluttered through your chest to settle low, and then lower still while you subtly clenched your thighs together, your heart racing all over again for another reason. His mouth hotly pressed to yours, drawing out a surprised sultry moan as you got lost in the kiss, the whole gym fading away for those few seconds.

I find it hilarious that like, most popular headcanons/ideas of HMS come from something that's in the actual album. Whether its the cover art or from a lyric, it makes sense with context or a metaphor. Then there's just a random ass chicken that came from nowhere.
