this goes out to an incredibly niche group of people, but to those who understand and appreciate audio/visual engineering and also maybe the TV show The Librarians, season 4 episode 4 has Eve and Flynn caught in an old mystery film noir, in which a significant portion of this forty minute episode had to be filmed in a 3 by 4 aspect ratio, and let me just say I feel for whoever realized they had to do that

like

the writers had to go "okay guys who used windows movie maker in 2008" and the director went very sceptically, "...why"

"because we're filming and editing the entire noir in 3/4 for historical accuracy"

when their business is threatened, she gets a chance to save it by teaming up with her best friend, a rich girl with a talent for forgery, a vampire artist, and a mysterious city guard to do a heist to infiltrate high society and collect a logbook that may reveal the extent of the corruption in the city

#a tempest of tea #aroaessidhe 2024 reads #This has a really cool concept and worldbuilding and some fantastic characters!#I like the discussion of immigration and colonialism (I appreciate a story in this niche that’s not so white)#I like arthie and jin’s relationship and Arthie is a great character.#It definitely feels like the first half of a story - like is the arthurian stuff gonna come up more or is it just...#the mc is called arthie and has a gun she pulled out of a stone. Is there more to that lmao. it does end on a cliffhanger too.#The main thing I *didn't* like is that the middle kinda turns into…miscellaneous events purely to facilitate the characters being attracted #to each other. good for them I guess but i don’t care.#(I probably should have expected that based on the author’s other duology so that's on me I guess)#(the romances also feel on the older side of YA)#I also found that the audioboook narrator paused slightly too long between sentences.#I love having author interviews at the end of audiobooks!#which also directly called me out for guessing the obvious twist but not the multiple others directly after #(granted the obvious one I was like... genuinely confused whether it was supposed to be a twist bc I thought we already knew that)#also what's up with the coconut. lol. why that specifically

#likeeee it kind of seems to me that… they got pretty close. to absolute evil. you know #like uhhh… nilfgaardian invasion detailed in baptism of fire anyone #though ok ok his point was that there is no absolute evil as in being motivated by evil itself #that evil always has its own motivations and those motivations can be evil but it’s not evil for the sake of being evil #HOWEVER that being said i feel like bonhart really was just evil for the sake of being evil #you could say for the sake of sadism or for greed (him being the anti-geralt lol and actually being a stereotyped idea of witcher ngl)#buuuut i feel like sadism and greed are just niche evils themselves #with vilgefortz and the wallcreeper and also emhyr (didnt mention his ass at first but throw him in too) they’re more just power hungry #and wanting revenge on those that wronged them (interesting because isn’t this also what our protags want—minus the power)#anyways reviewing these interviews again has me 😂😳😌 but also 🤨#sometimes i feel like (with this discussion on evil) the economics background really shines through LMAO #like well sometimes i feel like there really is evil that is evil evil. sometimes people are just hateful and targeting with their hate #and you know this yourself bc you wrote it wtf #like you’re not gonna call the human peasants who slaughtered the dwarves and elves in rivia evil? i would call that absolute evil #maybe not their entire lives but in that instance true evil manifested #i feel like the definition of evil im getting at is hate and bloodthirst #which yeah sometimes that exists for no reason whatsoever #i mean it can be based out of economic ‘reasoning’ (manipulated into propaganda) to scapegoat a population and target of hate #but it quickly excels past any reason whatsoever. yeahh i dont think evil always has a motivation outside of evil. disagree #the elbow-high diaries #also there’s more context here i’m leaving out bc its just too much to talk about in the tags of this post

a lot of communities/projects/visions are only ever meant to be a scene, not a generation-spanning thing, and that's fine, but

there is something beautiful about an entity that's mature enough & healthy enough that the passing of Some Charismatic Guy or Some Charismatic Group isn't the beginning of the end. like if you can build a system that's robust and beautiful and flexible enough to keep inspiring others to come along and take up the torch. that's fucking living babey
