Okay I've seen posts where they're like "If Max went to California instead of Mike she would've actually stopped Angela at the roller rink," Or they talk about how Max would've thrown hands with Angela and while I agree I offer you this take:

El would not have taken Max to the roller rink in the first place. El would not have lied about the difficult time she was having in California to Max. She would have told Max about her struggles with fitting in and talked about her grief with 'loosing' Hopper. El would not have tried to pretend to be someone she was not with Max.

Her friendship with Max runs deep despite it being relatively new. We've seen them be there for each other time and time again. Max going to California instead of Mike would have given El a chance to cling to something she knows is true and stable, unlike her rocky relationship with Mike.

If anything, Max would be the one showing El around. Maybe taking her to the beach, teaching her how to surf, taking her to Cali based fast food chains that Max had missed in Hawkins. They would have fallen back into each other, found comfort in their mixed feelings and grief. Max could've opened up about her feelings around Billy's death.

They have a very open and honest relationship and more importantly they know that one will not judge the other. This is literally canon. So yes while I love to think about Max rocking Angela's shit, I just don't think that the roller rink fiasco would have happened. El wouldn't have taken Max there because she nothing to prove to her.

elmax is insane because el is so jealous that at first she refuses to even shake max's hand but max is still just amazed by her and that dynamic presumably goes on for months before at last they hang out and immediately become great friends and part of each others happiest memories to the point where max thinks el might be an illusion her mind made to help her fight vecna (like how she made the replica of the snowball) and then el says the most romantic cliche sentence in the series that she probably heared in one of her soap operas (if you touch her again i will kill you again) and when she fails to protect her she takes the hand she rejected when they first met and she literally makes her heart beat again (as in el is literally the reason max's heart is beating) and i am just supposed to be normal about the two of them? btw dr. owens thought max was el's boyfriend.

my taste in ships for Stranger Things is so fun because for some people there’s multiple options i ship them with, for example Robin. I prefer Ronance, but I don’t mind Robin and Vicky or Robin and Chrissy. it’s like yeah just let the girl do whatever fits best for the story.

But then I look at Steve and I’m like “yeah there is now only one person I ship you with, and it’s Eddie.” Like i’m just not a fan of Stancy or Harringrove. Steddie is the only one that really appeals to me personally. (it’s fine if you do ship one of those though!! more power to ya!!)

Or like with Max. I can go down the Elmax route, or I can go down the Lucas x Max route and in that case I make El some form of aro/ace. But I can’t ship El with Mike.

It’s just something that I thought of recently is that it’s so funny how my brain accepts some ships but not others, like where the line is drawn at the flexibility of the matter.

jonathan and nancy broke up a couple months before the byers moved to california. (let’s say this universe is a no upside down au/no vecna au). the only people that know of this breakup is joyce, el, hop, will, and mike. mostly because jon and nance didn’t feel it necessary to shout it for everybody considering it was mutual. when nancy first meets robin after the days of having putt nance calls jonathan. jonathan’s hyping her up telling her that she needs to just go for it and it won’t hurt to try. both forgetting that both robin and steve think they are still together. the byers move back finding it difficult to make the new house a home. (let’s say this is 3 months after the move). will and el meet up with the rest of the party and meet hellfire while jonathan meets up with nancy and talk about her and robin.

this whole time robin has been crying to steve that nancy is leading her on because she doesn’t know that nancy is a single woman who is genuinely flirting. steve is trying to save nancy’s name saying things like “she’s not like that” and “she would never do that robs” but it just boils down to he’s still in love with nancy (even though he has a big fat crush and eddie and before that liked jonathan).

idk i just thought that would be a good fic idea or something

has anyone noticed how el and max both always wore long sleeved shirts, jackets, or multiple layers in s1 and s2 but wore short sleeves and tank tops in s3? the only season that they had someone else who saw the real them and when they became friends.

and the colors being vibrant in the only season they're together...

and then in s4, they're back to wearing long sleeves, jackets, and multiple layers. they're even back to wearing dark neutral colors like before.

el wearing a majority of blue but not wearing it when she reunites with max, when she finds the bottle her and max played the spying game with, during mike's monologue, and at the end (signifying she's not tied to mike anymore).

it's interesting how there's only small bits of color in el's outfits and max's only colorful outfit is the 'dear billy' one (and that was obviously intentional as it's the episode where she finds she's not alone and realizes her friends are there for her) which is a reference to s3 max, max finding herself again.

(elmax scenes in s4. notice how el isn't wearing any blue. she's wearing her white pants and white shirt with pink flowers on it, her new look. the all white with specks of pink, showing she's already becoming el who is independent, not el who is mike's girlfriend. and it's almost like the pink represents max, signifying that she's going to be el's main focus next season and el is going to be all about max instead of mike.)

(and no you can't say it's "because of the weather" "it's cold in hawkins" because literally other characters wear short sleeved shirts/tank tops so?)

Yes Max is allowed to be soft but she definitely struggles to be. When you grow up in a rough home you surround yourself with a wall that doesn't break down easily. Because of this it means so much that that wall does break around El and Lucas. Look I am an Elmax shipper first and foremost, maybe an Elumax shipper on some days, but I can't deny how impactful those soft moments are between Lucas and Max, how much the those moments speak of their bonding as characters. Same with El- who literally couldn't live without Max. Still fuckin insane over that.

Max just loves her people and she trusts them to such a degree that her younger self never could've imagined. She's not alone anymore.
