DE2 VR
I've been playing with an idea for a DE sequel for a while I've been calling Video Revachol. just for fun, don't jump up my ass about any of this.
Disco = to learn and Disco Elysium = To Learn Elysium. Video = to see, so Video Revachol = To See Revachol; the story would involve tracking down Harry all over Revachol, starting at the Video Revachol rental store he kept having nightmares about.

A week after the Hanged Man case, Harry goes missing. You play as Kim, and the game kicks off with Jean visiting P57 to ask if you have any idea where Harry could have gone since you were the last person to spend any significant time with him in his new post-amnesia state.
This solves an issue I've had with the idea of a Harry POV DE sequel, that would have to pick a "canon" ending from DE to spring off of. Jean will interview Kim for details on how Harry was acting and you can describe any kind of Harry you played (or make one up wholesale), explaining to Jean what he was worked up about politically, whether he was sober or not, how well he did his job etc etc. Basically a more detailed version of Kim's assessment at the end of DE but the player is the one dictating it. This impacts what Harry is doing while MIA.
Regardless of the Harry you describe, Jean recruits Kim to help him search for him because a missing police officer is a huge deal, esp one as unstable and erratic as du Bois. Just like Kim does in DE, Jean can suggest where to go next and discuss the case with you as your partner. He obviously has a lot of insight into how Harry thinks, but you aren't dealing with quite the same Harry he's used to.
See this post for an explanation on the modified clothing mechanics Kim and Jean have. They don't steal clothes like Harry does, so you're limited to clothes they already have or can get thru legitimate means. Kim can mod some clothes he finds if they aren't too dirty or stupid looking.
The plot follows a search that goes all over Revachol, starting at Video Revachol and Harry's nearby apartment and then going from there.
Kim has his own set of skills and thought projects, but you aren't starting with a clean slate like Harry. Instead of amnesia, Kim's got a lot of repression and mental blocks compartmentalizing things that will take time to open up. One of the big ones is what happened to his old partner, Eyes.
Dominic "Eyes" Aguilar was Kim's satellite officer. The two of them were close, and it is very vague initially what happened to him. Kim *refuses* to dwell on it, and you'll need to complete a few mental exercises to even let him meditate on the subject. There are hints that Eyes might have been killed, others that he died of an overdose, or that he just quit or was fired. This is a parallel to Harry and Dora, but different because whatever happened to Dom happened very recently. Kim has not been dealing with it in a healthy way. Lots of phantom Doms crop up visually and as auditory hallucinations; his absence is fresh and Kim hasn't adjusted to it.
This affects his dynamic with Jean, a recently orphaned satellite officer. Kim tries to keep him at arm's length emotionally and you can do that successfully, or you can let Kim open up to him. I like the idea of it mirroring the "gruff older man adopts a lost child" trope that was popular in the 2010s, but the lost child is a 34 yr old cop with depression and anger issues.
Other story beats I keep thinking about:
At some point the Kineema is taken out of commission (either damaged or Kim's captain rescinds authorization to use it for some reason), so they take Harry's old motorcycle with a sidecar, inspired by this one sketch by DE's art director. Kim is a huge fan, and Jean... isn't.
When unable to tag along with Kim, Jean has a cop horse he rides around. This way he can leave the scene for various reasons without taking Kim's transport option away. Her name is something stupid like Pookie or Cookie and Jean loves her even tho she's mean. Kim does not like horses and will not attempt to ride her even if prompted.
What happened to Harry is determined by the description you give of him in the beginning. It all has something to do with the Shivers visions telling him about the very terrible thing that's going to happen to Revachol if he doesn't stop it (or, if you described a particular type of Harry, he might be trying to expedite it in a way where he'll come out with some power over what's left)
Kim has a decomptage but it's in disarray after losing Eyes. His team is also majority young women, which gets him some comments. If you eavesdrop/EDC some of his team you find out there's a whisper network among women in the RCM, and Kim's considered a good guy to work for because, quote, "He won't call you with a love confession at 3 am like the other bellends here". This can cause some conflict for Kim because obviously he wants to be a safe mentor for these officers, but female officers trying to join his team has caused some unneeded scrutiny towards him from the other men at P57. You gonna keep up the feminist thing even if it alienates you from 80% of your blue brothers? huh??
Kim's entire relationship with the RCM is framed like an abusive one. The more Kim leans into the cop identity, the more power he feels but the more paranoid and jumpy he gets. A LOT of his fellow officers treat him like shit and you can even get Kim fixated on the idea that some of his team want him dead and out of the way.
like. fucking obviously i want kim and jean to flirt. It becomes very clear that Jean's lonely and misses Harry, so he tries to get Kim to bond with him. You can shut him down or open up-- this is tied to progress on any of the thought projects/compartmentalization deconstruction relating to Eyes. Kim won't let himself get close to Jean without processing some of that grief.

The archive warnings on AO3 are mandatory if I don't "choose not to use archive warnings". I've often been in a situation where they sort of apply, but it's not central to the story.
For example, the story is about a major character's funeral, but his death isn't actually described. Or a character refers to underage sex they had in the past, but they're an adult in the fic and it's just a brief and non graphic reference. Or there's a body horror scene that uses sexual assault imagery but isn't actually a (non-con) sex scene.
In other words: there are plot elements that fit one of the warnings, but they're not graphic or don't exactly fit the definition. Should I use warnings then? Does it matter whether the mc death (etc) are part of the original canon or not?
On one hand, the warnings are intended to help people avoid things they don't want to read, so maybe any mention of the subject at all deserves a warning (that can be clarified in the tags). On the other hand, it feels a bit silly to warn for "major character death" if the death happens in canon and the fic is about people dealing with the fallout. I could see it going either way, so I'm asking you.

Usually, the warnings are for things that happen on-page, though I'd still warn for an off-page non-canon death.

Something I've realized recently is when I say I love romance in media, I'm not exactly drawn to the romance itself. An aroace rant
I'm not very impressed with the swooping camera angles or running through airports to catch someone or longing glances, I actually very clearly remember being young and thinking I was supposed to stare longingly at someone I liked but never understanding the appeal. First kisses never seemed that exciting and from as young as I can remember I've never believed in love at first sight cause it didn't seem real or plausible to me, how can you love someone you've never met or talked to? What if you just loved the outside and what's on the inside is someone you can't stand? Is that love? And now that I'm older and growing into my identity I'm starting to realize what I've been drawn to in romance in media has never been the flashy bits but the moments of love in small things. I could be reading a sex scene in a book and the part that sticks out to me the most is when the character narrating describes feeling fond of whoever they're with or they're true feelings can be seen by the way the describe small things about their partner. I love moments where they are completely comfortable with each other or talk about knowing each other
I don't want dramatic music and swooping cameras and running through crowded areas to reach someone, I want to be known.

OK! Thoughts on S2E2, Do you know what it means to be loved by death?

Claudia asking Louis who he is reminded me of my thoughts the other day (a very brief summary):
Louis is afraid to look deeply within himself at who he is, in case he is not perfect, as he needs to believe he is. But he does believe he deserves love.
Conversely, Lestat knows himself - for his evil especially, and despite it all, he still likes himself mainly. But he is afraid he is utterly unloveable.
Claudia talking about a new brain in her head and Armand a new body for her brain… are they *really* going to go there? It is seeming like it?
I like Madeleine from the wee bit we saw, and I love Claudia’s dress

The first meeting of Armand and Louis:
Armand is like a poem made into the form of a being - the way Assad’s Armand speaks, how he looks, how he looks at Louis: he radiates a quiet peace, calm & poetic gentleness, which gave me shivers and goosebumps. Like the beautific gaze of an angel. All added to by Daniel Hart’s divine score, reflecting exactly the same emotions. This is how Armand is often described in the books (until he’s not), but because of the extremes Armand can go to, I don’t often think of this calm, angelic, almost innocent side to him so much… but oh how I felt it
I love how the lamp lights flicker. It’s like a fairytale romance and everything about it: down to “I will not harm you” is exactly as Louis would wish to hear
SANTIAGO! I love Ben Daniels. I love Santiago’s outfit and his eyes and his theatricality and his evident cleverness.
Interesting how dilapidated the Theatre des Vampires is. Seems like it hasn’t been updated since the ’20’s - half empty; broken bulbs… I am sure we have more to hear on this in the show…
Love how Armand brought cinema into the plays
The plays though have such a tawdry, distasteful feel. I would agree with Louis’ and Lestat’s visceral dislike of them, even before the human sacrifice. Though I do like the Brecht vibes. But it is such a contrast to S1 Lestat and Louis at the Opera…

And THEY MUST LOVE EACH OTHER like Devil’s Minion which always makes me sob. (Or maybe Alice does exist, but Armand is why she wouldn’t marry Daniel?)

OMG we’re going to actually see Nicolas play violin! I am SO SCARED! I hope I’ll adore it and I have faith in the show makers. But, I have also seen so much terrible violin miming (it makes me wonder, when people play surgeons, is what they are doing this annoyingly unrealistic too and I just have no idea!?!) and it is particularly noticeable, as usually piano miming is very good! Anyway, I know it is such a minor thing in the greater scheme of things, but I know I will be so irritated if it doesn’t look like Nicki is playing the violin. I think that writing a good sex scene means not only focusing on the characters' actions, but also on their feelings and thoughts. Describing exactly what their doing at all times is overdone. Also using the exact terms for their body parts all the time sounds way too technical and clinical. One needs to get creative when writing such scenes, this is fiction, not a wikihow guide or whatever.

bc rereading it i was like. O_O. is he. not talking about vil.
i was thinking like "the first read through you're definitely meant to think so, and vil did absolutely change rook's life, but with context from both book 6 and his halloween vignette, what he's describing here leans more towards the latter" which is like. masterful gaybait i can't even be mad. it's like that post saying "some gaybaiting is like a box propped up with a stick and a block of cheese underneath" except this has all the intricacy of a steampunk clock.
but my VERY shoddy japanese skills r telling me the line translates more to "beauty in your eyes and the darkness, lighting up your entire life for you—in a time in your existence when you'll be able to have [such an experience] (expanding on the prev line where he says they'll be able to understand his ideology in the future)"
^ and i probably mangled this so bad but the main point is i didn't hear him refer to a "someone" like he does in the english tl & i'm wondering if i missed it or if it was in fact added!!!

Sometimes I think there are certain parts of Wolf 359 that feel so familiar to me that I almost forget what they are like the first time round.
Like, I've just been thinking about how in the finale, after Minkowski gets shot, we don't hear any noise from her all through Cutter's gloating speech. We hear her gasp as the bullet hits and the show immediately cuts away to a different scene. Then when we rejoin the confrontation with Cutter, we don't hear Minkowski make any noise - not even a groan of pain or a laboured breath - for over a minute. And because it's an audio drama, this means that we don't have any direct indication of just how injured she is, of whether she's fully conscious, of whether she's even still alive. Lovelace's reactions can't tell us much while she's struggling against Cutter's control. And I wouldn't put it past Cutter to gloat to someone unconscious.
The first noise we do hear Minkowski make after being shot in the stomach - the first proof we have that she's still with us - is her gathering her strength and declaring "Renée Minkowski... and that is more than enough to kick your ass!", before punching Cutter. Productions of Hamlet where Hamlet downs Horatio’s poisoned wine himself, my beloved. Drinking the poison meant for your best friend to save their life must have felt so intimate…

trying to figure out character voices for my ocs and I think the one I have the clearest picture of rn is taituk. they speak…not quite stiffly maybe but definitely a tad formal. more connective words & full sentences than most people use when speaking. they’ve got the admirable habit of just letting silence fall until they’ve thought of the right thing to say, very little uhming or use of other filler words. they tend to be overly specific rather than vague—e.g., instead of saying something is rare or common, they might try to give a numeric indication of how rare or common it is. they talk quite slowly and quietly, but can make themself heard if so desired. absolutely hate shouting. they prefer to speak calmly, and if they’re in an emotional situation they will wait to compose themself until they know their voice will be level. because of this they can seem emotionless to the untrained eye, but they’re just good at hiding/repressing them lol

Finished watching Nimona a second time.
..... Ah... It did make me cry. Less of an "oh I am sobbing my eyes out" and more of a "there are tears on my face and they came in a subtle way I cannot pinpoint."

I will not lie I cried three times watching Mr.Harrigan's Phone. That being said when I went to review it on letterboxd I did not expect such low ratings and a lot of people were saying it was bad cause it was anti-technology but that is not what I got from this movie At All so I'm wondering if maybe I'm not processing this movie right cause I'm too hung up on the death scenes or if everybody else is just bad at analyzing this movie.
#jelly.txt#okay spoilers up ahead if you're planning on watching but anyway. i've never read the original story so i don't really know how#stephen king originally meant it to come off as but personally in the movie i saw it less as anti-technology and more as a#'be careful what you wish for' type story. like sure there are some scenes where the voice-over describes how mobile phones#have caused corps to get greedy and put valuable info behind paywalls and has changed the way we socialize with each other#whether for better or for worse (but mostly worse) but it's like. it's not anti-tech to say the internet is wasted potential#not once in the movie did they ever say 'phones bad! old stuff good!'. what they DID say though is that all the information of the world#being at your fingertips makes way for misinformation. and that the knowledge that can be found in a book can outlast technology#and it's not wrong!! it's not wrong to say that information that is made with technology will not last forever!! this is true!!#there's still plenty of people in the world who rely on or prefer physical things over digital!! that is not anti-tech!!#this movie is about a haunted fucking phone you guys. haunted. phone. remember that. and then read the letterboxd reviews
