Would we be better off as a society, if we were devoid of religion? I see this a lot as a question, and often see the answer "no, because we do good things." come from many of my religious pers. So, I just thought I would list just a fraction of things that are caused or related to religion. Monarchy is justified under a God, sexism in history was often 'justified', by bible passages, homosexuality was persecuted and tortured, the church is used to cover up sexual misconduct with many people, including children by priests or other clergy members, it was used to justify the burning of thousands of people across the western world for 'witchcraft', it was used to oppress people due to race, sex, background, and more. I could go on for hours, but no. You can't deny the evils far out way the good done to this world after thousands of years by religion.

Donning the Mantle of Doffed Theism (or Letting Religion and God(s) be as They Are)

I sure do wish that more religiously inclined people would take up the mantle most boldly worn in our time by the Rt. Rev. John Shelby Spong in noting that the god of theism is dead. And, in this, that the of metrics upholding any anthropomorphic, tribal deity in the sky have become utterly untenable in the face of the contemporary observations of science, anthropology, and sociology (especially as expedited by modern modes of global telecommunication and travel).

This doesn’t mean, however, that religion is dead. Letting go of the desire and ignorance born projections of a bygone era doesn’t limit the positive and beneficial effects of religion as so many have experienced it both yesterday and today. It does however situate those effects and experiences in a slightly different epistemological realm.

In letting the sacred be revealed (and indeed fully manifest) in biology and psychology, poetry and prose, metaphor and objective description, ritual silence and sound, in intentional community and solace, we can more fully find ourselves and become more fully human. In this too, we can let the errs of religion belong to whom they belong (the humans perpetuating them).

At its heart, religion is about attention, intentionality, transformation, acceptance, and the wisdom to be well in the face of our collective impermanent and transitory state.

Religion is about persisting and finding comfort in the face of unknowing, while celebrating that which we can know. Nearly everything else is superfluous affectation.

And yes, I find the niche of religion to be a persistent and necessary one. There are far too few places in this world to openly dialogue with matters of practical existentialism, to build resolve and confront the shadows of our collective unconscious, and to create meaning and community. We see this demonstrated in research literature consistently- despite our more topically connected and so-called secular society, we are more lonely and depressed than perhaps ever before, in an alarming trend.

A big problem, however, is not just the (oft rational) public perceptions about the place and function of religion in our current world, it’s that religious leaders, even those who intuit these realities and are sympathetic to them, simply have no training or formation pertinent to life and vocation in the waters where they are being led. The result has been obviously lackluster, with various forms of public witness and justice work coming to entirely supplant spiritual praxis. What better to do, I supposed, with borrowed and diminishing cultural authority in the absence of knowing what else one can do?

It means keeping a special place in your mind and heart for them. The universe makes no distinction between thought and material, if you want to feel your God’s presence more in the material world, the very first step is to start THINKING about them. THINK about them and they will surely start to think about you.
