i loveee the thought of Hobie Miles and Pavitr all trying to sleep in a small bed and Miles kicks them both off of it while he tosses and turns, and Hobie’s too tired to get up so he just sleeps on the floor but Pavitr gets back in the bed and kicks Miles really hard in the legs and pretends to be asleep if Miles wakes up from it.

I can't believe another month is gone, I know it's a cliche but genuinely, where did it go? All I remember is cooking in the ridiculous temperatures and here we are. I say ridiculous, but they were ridiculous for the UK, a country with no idea what an air conditioning unit it seems is. (I mean why would we need to? It rains here 90% of the time!)
I read over thirty books this month, some good, some bad, some mindlessly average, and four of them were absolutely brilliant and that's what this post is about, sharing the five star books I read in the month of August. I hope you find something interesting from this post and please feel free to let me know what books you have loved in the month of August, I always love to add your recommendations to my TBR!
A Murder Is Announced by Agatha Christie - I've seen many of the TV adaptation and movies of these books, but still I found this book as exciting and gripping as watching an adaptation of it. The characterisation is excellent, the plot twists are excellent and Christie's way with creating a story here is done so well. I loved every moment of this one and it's my favourite Marple so far.
The Disasters by M.K. England - in my review of this book I said this was like if A Long Way to Small And Angry Planet and Illuminae had a baby, and I refuse to go back on that. I love the characters so much, which are diverse and so well written, I love it but the plot, the plot gives. An incredible book which focuses on a team of well, disasters saving their space academy from terrorists, I want more this group.
Cat's Cafe by Matt Tarpley - I don't say this often, but I ended up crying over a starfish, what is my life? If you have read this collection you might know what I am talking about, but I hope achieve it's dream. Fluffy, cute and original, these cartoons are incredible and I loved every single one of them, I want to print them and put them on my walls, and as soon as I was done, I put the next one on my TBR, so good.
Blacksad #1 (Somewhere Within The Shadows) by Juan Diaz Canales - As soon as I heard about the concept of this comic I knew I had to read it. A cat detective in an animal/human hybrid world solving the murder of his ex, a famed actress. The artwork is astonishing (and reminds me of this painting my great grandmother had of dogs playing poker) but also the story, the story is so good, the characters are soo good, I need the second one as soon as possible, I really do.
These have been my favourite books this month, and I can't wait to see what I enjoy next month. My next reads are the last of the Discworld books, The Shepherd's Crown and I continue with Marple reading A Carribean Mystery.
I hope you have a wonderful September,
Vee xo.

I haven’t done a reading update for a while!
Tumblr media
Good book—reminiscent of A Marvellous Light. Author clearly has a size kink lol.
Tumblr media
This was a conclusion to a trilogy and I really loved it! It was a murder mystery, and I always enjoy lighthearted mysteries set in the ancient world.
Tumblr media
YA space adventure novel. I enjoyed it. This book definitely had the YA problem of like...I don’t really buy that these teenagers could pull all this off, but they are at least written like teens in other respects, and they were likable.
Tumblr media
I didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as TJ Klune’s adult fiction, but...I expected to enjoy it more than I did. TJ Klune is very good at writing in a teenage voice which I think was part of the problem. I repeatedly found myself cringing because the main character reminded me so much of myself at 15. It was too well done haha. I’ll probably read the other two though, because it was cute and well written.
Tumblr media
Actually a really interesting dystopian novel about a world where everyone is cloned, and you only live until you’re 30. The plot is about a clone who has just turned 30, and when you turn 30 you basically age 1 year every day, then you go to die. He meets a man at a coffeeshop and of course the scales fall from his eyes and he learns The Truth.
Tumblr media
Man I wanted to like this book more than I did. I loved the romance and the characters, but I kind of hated the writing style? There were way too many pop culture allusions and references, and they were often just awkward.
Tumblr media
I liked this one a lot, despite the extremely contrived set-up, haha (seriously you guys, a divorce involves more than sending in some paperwork). It was a really sweet story and I love romance novels with more mature characters. I also really loved that it featured a queer couple that wanted to live in the suburbs, and the acknowledgement that not all queer people want to be in the city all the time and clubbing, because some of us are introverts and like quiet.
Tumblr media
Oh man, this book was SO YA. Like...the YAest YA that ever YAed. I liked it, and I might pick up the sequel, but like...so YA. It was published in 2013, so clearly part of the Dytopian YA fiction wave. But it had an interesting premise, and I liked the two central characters.
Tumblr media
AHHHHHHHHH omg this book was so good. I loved The Queer Principles of Kit Webb, which is Cat Sebastian’s biggest title, but I actually liked this one more. It’s post WWII and that’s just not a period I read a lot of? It especially doesn’t seem prominent with MLM romances. But I loved that setting. And I LOVED the two main characters, they were so good. It was my favorite romance dynamic, too, haha.
One of the mains has PTSD (never called that as the term didn’t exist). Considering how short this book is, the mental health stuff was really well done. I just really loved it. I ordered the second one in the series and can’t wait to read it.
Tumblr media
Did not get what I expected from this book based on the cover (which is incredibly cheesy). This was a very sweet novella set in a dystopian future (lol yes I just called a dystopian novel “sweet”). The premise is that an algorithm chooses the best genetic match for people to marry. There are two districts in the city, one that gets all these tax breaks, and the Taxable District which is essentially a slum, but they have the freedom to live their lives the way they want to. The main character (who’s one of the well-off people) meets a man from the Taxable District, realizes he’s gay, and then takes control of his life to be with this guy. It was quite lovely.

Just started reading this, and I love it already. I loved Boyfriend Material but I wasn’t sure if Alexis Hall could do period romance. He can! This book is really funny.

June was a heavy design month for me, but I got to read some GREAT books. The book this first illustration was based on, The Left Hand of Dog by Si Clarke, was my absolute favorite escapist read this year! PLEASE read it, I'm begging you!
Funny design note: I went through so many flag colors for the "tea." My favorite was the alternate agender flag, but we decided to go with rainbow in the end. They both look great, though!
This design is one of those that you really have to read the book to get, and I smile every time (also wish this was a real thing!).
I also really loved this texty art I did for @rainbowcrate based on The Disasters by MK England! This was used as the case design for a really cool collapsible straw! I have been keeping it on my desk because it's so cool, but I need to move it to my bag soon so I can use it!
Go read The Disasters, it's a fun ride. :)
[ID: An illustration of a universal translator that looks like an Apple watch with faded aro and ace flags on the band. The face says "Universal translator mode: Literal, Figurative. In the background are stars and flying bunny heads in pastel colors. In the foreground is a pink flying teapot pouring rainbow tea.]
[ID 2: An illustration of the words "Crime on an empty stomach seems like a bad idea" next to a glass of iced tea and a set of keys with a keychain that says "Swift kick." The second photo is of that illustration on an open oval bamboo case with a metal straw inside, on top of a sketchbook.]

Book Review: The Disasters by M.K. England
10/10. I want to keep reading this book, even after it was over. The descriptions of the characters makes me bisexually yearn, Nax makes them all sound so hot. Plus, the difference in their personalities just makes them a perfect team. I was obsessed from the first page.
Even though books always end with the good guys winning, I was shocked when they managed to save the entire universe. The odds just seemed so stacked against them. But I enjoyed the ending, with the found family vibe.

There is some pretty shocking footage out there of the Baltimore bridge collapse early this morning. I've already seen some incredibly wrong, incredibly insensitive Hot Takes about how shitty the bridge was to have fallen after being bonked by a boat, etc
Please don't be that person.
The facts will come out. Speculation is silly. In addition to loss of life, the Francis Scott Key bridge was a major arterial in that region's highway system. Its loss will be felt for years, and not just to daily commuters.
Baltimore harbor is closed. No shipping at all. This will impact supply chains in ways we cannot even assess yet.
It's pretty fucked up.

Crocodile finds a strange stray cat an 11-year old Nico Robin (AU where they met 13 years earlier. Robin's been on the run from the World Government for 3 years. Crocodile's 27 and has not set up base in Alabasta yet)
It seems like I have become possessed. By some sort of demon.
