Gotta say as someone whos been out since they were young, I'm really sick of having to defend the existence of queer people in media and explain how it's 'useful' or 'plot important' when straight ppl i know can like whatever trashy het romance they want no questions. Like does it have to be useful? Can it not just be there? It doesn't 'cheapen' anything its just there and suddenly you have to fight for your life to explain why it should get to exist. And it's always the bloody 'pandering' 'it's a trend' argument and I hate it because is it so terrible if they pander to ME for once instead of you?? Is that so terrible?? But you can't say that because then you're a fool who doesn't understand good storytelling. And then if they're real annoying, they'll pull the 'well i don't like when ANY romance is just pushed in' so then why. Is it always queer stuff you're complaining about?? And then I'm forced to be defending a (honestly poorly written) queer romance because all I said was that it couldve been handled better and somehow to straight ppl that translate to 'yeah they shouldn't have done it at all' and they don't even REALISE their bias and that SOMEHOW the ONLY FUCKING TIME we have this arguement it's about a queer character. Can I not enjoy the fact a superhero I like is bisexual while also admitting I don't like how they flattened their character after it? Can I not say 'yeah it's trashy but theyre cute' to some crap TV show? Does it always have to be perfect? Because yeah. I want good shows. I want complex dynamics. But sometimes it just feels nice when the silly comic book character is bisexual. And these motherfuckers will ALWAYS find some way to argue that it wasn't relevant and therefore they shouldn't have come out at all, which is just another way of saying that queerness should be kept away from the things they like and only be included if 'plot relevant' so then they can avoid it. I'm just so tired, so so fucking tired, of having the same argument over. And over. And over again with the same people about the same things when all I wanted to do was talk about a bisexual character WITHOUT some asshole jumping down my throat. I've been doing this shit since I was 12 and I'm just tired. Christ.

#anyway i finished the main portion of the book #all i have left is the poems and a few other small things i think? ive read pelafinas letters #im thinking of getting the full book of her letters #but also they severely messed with my head so we'll see #i will say. i do get why ppl say the book is pretentious and frustrating #there was a lot of stuff where i couldnt tell if it was supposed to be satire or if it was genuinely just that dense and pretentious #and a lot of the codes were rly obtuse imo?#like... idk. some of them were super obvious like the sos stuff or pelafina outright saying what to do #but others like. man how am i supposed to know johnny waxing poetic about pussy was coded #i mean that one is also pointed out though much later but i know i missed a lot just like it that werent pointed out #and ive heard theres a lot of shit where the message you get is just danielewski????? which gonna be real. kinda dumb.#but i did also really enjoy the book #there was a lot of stuff in it that was just so compelling or poignant or whatever other word #the minotaur stuff is good (ofc id say that though i love me some minotaur themes)#also a lot of the scenes with johnny just...... christ #idk how ppl say to skip them hes so fascinating #yeah i could do with him talking about his possibly hallucinated sex life a bit less but also his story is just plain interesting #i still think about the part where the girl he was talking to runs over a dog they had picked up........ it was fucking chilling #and his hallucinations of dying are so descriptive in just the right way to get under my skin #the uncertainty with him and his family..... did pelafina try to kill him? did his father just send her away for being a bit too overbearing #over an accident? was there something else? what was the deal with his foster family? with lude? gdansk man and kyrie?#how did it get published? who are the editors? why did the band know of the book before it should have been published?#why does his journal section end with a story from a man he admits to making up completely? the doctor from seattle doesnt exist #the chronological end is more hopeful with him saying things will be okay but then he puts a previous entry after that?#i think the burning of the book parallels the story nicely #johnny said his piece; he nurtured the book as much as he could; but it was hurting him and he had to give up on it #idk!#this book does make me feel a lil dumb ngl

Btw if you're a fan of the movie and you saw any of my criticism OR NOT I deeply encourage you to tell me why you love this movie and maybe counterpoint my takes. I'm so into getting a new perspective thru the eyes of a lover.

That said the fact that around 8 people saw me asking if I'd watch this movie and Fargo and everyone voted Fargo (of that group, like 2 went for nope) gives me such hope about the fans in the crowd. True lulyheads knew I was gonna hate it before I knew that. Wild.

not to bring up old amd major fandom discourse but...

okay so watching the atla live action drove me back into my 2010 zutara era, and reading all that zutara fanfic made me think of klance (the other blue/red ship we should have had) so i was reading klance fic which made me realize i forgot most of the show and made me want to rewatch the show and im about to finish season 2 again and guys??? omg????

ok i was a klance girly thru and thru like everyone else but in the early seasons like 1 and 2 (and i realize what i'm about to say is blasphemous but bear with me) allura and keith had HELLA chemistry. like they had bonding moments and had like...a lot of deep talks and skinship (like the ep where they thought they were being tracked by zarkon, or the ep where allura gets over some of her galra hatred for keith's sake, etc etc) and were honestly more compelling than allura and lance or allura and shiro. maybe it's because i'm no longer a child/i'm looking at it through a more critical lens but the dynamics are totally different than what i remember in the early seasons.

OBVIOUSLY IT'S MEANT PLATONICALLY IN THE SHOW but the chemistry is real platonically or romantically. and for fandom that ships anything with a pulse, this ship really should have been more popular.

i think ppl were just so obsessed with wanting gay characters or characters with specific sexualities that they glossed over characters that had real chemistry. and only sticking to the skinny characters was whack. lance had hella chemistry with hunk and but i think y'all are too fatphobic to properly appreciate him. i blame the show for making hunk the least fleshed out of the main characters. hunk is more than comic relief!

also? y'all butchered my boy keith in fanon. he's got way more personality in the real show than in fanon, which like i understand that usually fanon characters have less personality but the difference is wild. canon keith is not nearly as withdrawn or moody as he is in fanon, he's just kind of a grumpy guy who knows what he wants and is incredibly determined to get it. he's not as emo or depressed (or repressed) as fanon makes him either

one of the things that make bylers and miIevens view of the show utterly incompatible is the way we see el and her feelings towards mike (but more specifically her feelings towards her relationship with mike)

ive seen people say that bylers only care abt mike and will and don't give a damn abt her, but that's just a misunderstanding based on the fact that they see els arc in a totally different way than we do

for example the way i see it, el reached the peak of her pain (when it comes to her love life) at the start of s4 when she and mike fought in lenora. when mike told will that it felt like a fight you can't come back from, he wasn't exaggerating at all: it was the truth. there's no coming back from that, and the "from el" written at the end of what could very possibly have been els LAST message to mike is proof of that. she left that love behind

now why do i think that?

because of the way the whole storyline has been structured:

- el spends basically the whole season away from mike because she chooses to. she focuses on something else, her priorities lie in finding herself and the truth about her own past. once again her arc points towards self discovery and independence, and with this i don't mean to say that she has to be alone in order to be independent, but that she needs to find who she is OUTSIDE of her relationships. when mike says that she's a superhero he's once again imposing a certain view on her that she doesn't want. she needs to decide for herself. she needs to find who el hopper really is

- mike works through his internal conflict with the help of the other love interest. literally wtf lmao

- when el reunites with mike and will, she has the same reaction with both. now of course shes happy to see them, but when we get to the surfer boy place, she doesn't seem mad at mike anymore. she seems tired, contemplative, sad like she reached a conclusion........

why is that important? because if mikes monologue had to be what FIXED their relationship then she would've still been mad at him at that point. there wouldve been conflict because that's how stories work – up and down and up and down. so she would've avoided him or just kept her distance in general. but she doesn't. because she's done

IMAGINE FOR A MOMENT if the surfer boy scene went differently. imagine mike just telling her "ily" and she smiling and saying "ily too 💖💖 you finally said it 💖💖💖💖" it wouldve been so fucking anticlimactic lol

- mikes monologue doesn't fix shit because we don't see them together anymore. like yeah she puts her head on his shoulder in the hospital, but if the monologue was really meant to be this grand turning point for their relationship they would've put more focus on its aftermath.... and they didn't

- mike telling her "you're my superhero" goes against the core of els character arc throughout not only this season but the whole show. mike didn't learn anything

now im not saying ppl have to agree with me on this, even though of course i think this is the interpretation that 1) makes the most sense and 2) is most significant and compelling storytelling-wise. im just saying that once you see things this way the "byler don't care about el" argument crumbles because that's literally false: we don't want el to suffer and be alone against her will, we want her to leave mike behind because we genuinely think that it's what's best for her because her storyline SUPPORTS THAT

meanwhile wills story doesnt support heartbreak at all because of the way his feelings for mike are interwoven with his feelings about his sexuality

Like you’ve stated jj and Rafe are so so similar jj just has the pogues to keep him in check (and lack of power/resources which obviously plays a part) if it’s possible for jj to maintain a good support system why couldn’t Rafe find himself one outside of Kelce and topper who are just there and terrible as well just not psychotic

rafe does not have a healthy view of relationships everything is based on status/transactional

if his relationship with his own father is highly transactional how can he make real friends? hes friends with topper mainly to keep tabs on sarah (imo) and kelce is a yes man. he uses them to har some semblance of power

id also say barry is his truest friend and TBH i think rafe feels that way too but again hes not normal? but with barry he’s not kissing rafes ass, in face him and barry frequently go thru power struggles as their relationship develops and theres just something very compelling abt them which is why ppl ship them even jokingly because rafe can be his true self with barry, something he cant with anyone else not even his dad like despite barry mocking him its telling that the first person—outside of those who witnessed it— he told about peterkin was barry and on a level genuinely wanted his help/advice

but again barry and rafes relationship is hard to define and barrys….himself so he doesnt have the benefit that jj has of having friends who care about his well being. his only friend sold him out the second he could and that adds to his warped view of friendship and love (i dont think rafe loves barry in any capacity but their relationship factors into rafes other relationships)

and even with jjs clear resentment of kie (who i think would be the closest parallel to rafes weird relationship with barry) he still views her as someone he has in his corner when shit gets rough like if john b and pope arent there he still has kie and she wouldnt steer him wrong

rafe doesnt have topper or kelce forreal so he goes to barry. who steers him wrong everytime

I dont like the headcannon of davey being jewish.

Now listen dont get me wrong here!

Representation is so important especially for religions because in that department even the most popular ones r being bullied these days and then that religion isnt just any but the most hated one in history. The religion that was blamed for practically anything bad that has happened in the last 500-1000 years. In ww|| children didn’t even know this WAS a religion. In Germany they were taught that the word “jew” stood for a monster, like the wird rabbit stands for an animal. Idk if this makes sense but they LITTERALLY didn’t know any better which i personally find makes it worse. The ppl KNEW that they were wrong, and that they couldn’t convince poursouled children of anything unless they made up lies. The thing those children hated was justified. Anyone would hate a monster that only brings evil upon us. But they conected it to a name that describes something else.(the movie jojo rabit brings this accross extremely well and truthfull! It’s available on netflix and i think on prime!) And thats the problem. They knew they were wrong but they needed someone to blame for their own failures and problems. ANd WhO bEtTeR tHaN tHe OnEs ThAt HaVe BeeN aT bLamE fOr ThE pAsT 700 YeaRs???

This began with the germanians spreading Christianity around Europe when jews were still a majority. It was generally a seen as a sin to get along with a Christian, and as we all know in the middle age there have been some babaric events towarts (but also by) religious ppl.

In thirteen-sixty-something the thing got to a whole new level when in (i think it was italy but idk) a fountain was moisted with bacteria and brought back black plague for a lot of people, which obviously got word all around the world quickly. And with that obviously also rumours. The thing is that those rumors were LOADED.

Thats how the hatred toward jews specifically began. People thought they were witches that poisoned their food causing them all to get sick.

(Sry i didnt mean for this to turn into a history lesson hahaha)

So yeah. Representation is so important and I totally stand behind that!

That being said however i genuinely don’t like it with Davey and here’s why:

Im have no problem with the headcannon itself and obv not with people having thah headcannon. What bucks me is how that came to be.

It just feels sooo cliche taking the one character named david jacobs and saying he’s jewish.

Bakugou vent/Meta I guess lol

I really wonder if the ppl that read MHA and hate Bakugou even just the first chapters, actually get what's happening at first. Cause like... that's the WHOLE ASS POINT?? for him to be horrible.

And I honest to god don't understand why people miss that cause it's actually really fucking basic and easy to. But people quite literally took that as face value and ran with it for 300+ ass chapters. Starting from the bottom IS the whole point of MHA AND BAKUGOU. Like, sometimes I'm astounded at how genius the first chapter is as a set up and how much you need to grasp what it's ABOUT to appreciate the whole manga. Bkg is at his worst there (Deku too AND ALL MIGHT)and that's the point cause you can ONLY get up from there, it's telling you that there's a STORY here that's gonna be told.

Like NO SHIT you don't like him at first, THAT'S THE POINT. He IS terrible and you're supposed to UNPACK and understand why and HOW he will change and Hori did that perfectly, cause he's a multifaceted character that honestly you can see from the start that his insecurities already slip through the cracks in the first chapters, it's SO THERE. It's SO SIMPLE and ppl still miss the fact that you kinda do need to start at the bottom to be on the top.

And that's precisely what Bkg embodies. He has been going nothing but up, developing his motivations, actions, relationships and even morals. His story and growth is actually compelling cause he got to humble himself over and over, taking nothing but Ls the whole ass series. He did a complete 180, recognizing not only his mistakes but WHY he was wrong and has done nothing but repent and atone for those.

AND paid the ULTIMATE PRIZE TWICE and I find that fascinating.

He represents the themes of BNHA on PURPOSE, that there's MORE to people than face value, that society and expectations weigh on people and children, that redemption IS POSSIBLE. He is SO VITAL to it, precisely cause seeing him at his worst makes him more real and grounded and not just a yelling angry dude, it's so easy to see that he's just more bark than bite too lol His character is there for a reason and no wonder everyone is so enamored with him.

And to ppl that hate him, that consciously decide to keep taking him at face value and reducing him to just another archetype or angry dude, purposefully missing why he's like that in the first place, like sorry you're reading the story wrong. But well, I personally LOVE flawed, complex compelling characters.

like i always think about how ppl emphasize how ford traumatized fidds due to putting fidds in proximity to bill while downplaying fidds like. Very Much building the memory gun long before than and using it on ford AFTER FORD EXPRESSES CONCERNS ABOUT IT CAUSING BRAIN DAMAGE.

the society of the blind eye existed BEFORE ford started getting possesed. the blacklight edition heavily implies fidds had been using it on ford for a while, despite yknow. ford being Very Uncomfortable about it!

and the thing that sticks out is. fidds does this of his own volition. this is entirely his idea. no one tells him to do this.

"oh but it's a result of the trauma of the gremloblin encounter ford technically caused. and ford was dismissive of that anyways!" was he? ford definitely didn't take fidds anxiety as seriously as he should've but.... i'm not sure dismissive is the right word. ford DID feel terrible about what happened and blames himself. he does try to help fidds. it comes across as ford being unaware of how to help someone who's been traumatized, not dismissive.

and like, idk i don't think trauma is an excuse to start a cult and wipe ur friends memory after he specifically asks you not to! I love fidds and I think he's compelling BECAUSE he's a nice person who does off the wall shit like this.

fords crime here is that he was in an abusive relationship and somehow its his responsibility that fidds got caught in the crossfire and like.... idk man it rubs me the wrong way. bill was abusing ford and purposefully alienated him from fidds, and ppl argue it was fords fault??? it's victim blamey

i feel like ive seen ppl talk about the 1992 "lyla? youre back?" scene before but the context is so insanely batshit that i cant believe ive never seen anyone discuss that. lyla was "gone" because she got infected with a virus and straight up tried to kill miguel and his fiancee in a jealous rage after watching them have sex (this is not me exaggerating to be funny, lyla says "i saw what you two did last night and it was disgusting") and then when miguel finally breaks the window his apartment to get himself and his fiancee out before the security droids lyla is summoning to the apartment can kill them she projects herself out the window & loses her shit about how miguel shouldnt [love his fiancee] and should love her(=lyla) instead because lyla is beautiful and smart.

when the virus gets removed, lyla doesnt boot up correctly, so miguel brings in his techie brother to get a look at her. gabriel tells him that lyla is fried and she should just get another holoagent and miguel throws an honest to god temper tantrum about it (partially because he realizes hes going to have to go find the woman he left for his fiancee to fix lyla if he wants to see her again)

hes crying about something unrelated when lyla reveals shes back online & the exchange is "lyla? youre back?" to which lyla replies "no, miguel, this is my front!" and he gets so emotional that he jumps up and tries to hug her and just phases right through her.

but in trying to explain this i feel compelled to try to explain the fucked up and insane web of relationships that exist in spider-man 2099 (1992) which include things like "miguels fiancee has kissed his boss (who is also his dad) and also she is his brothers ex. and also she is still fucking his brother i think?"

I don’t like Klaus at all so I’m probably biased but I didn’t like a second of that shit… Klaus becomes obsessed with random ppl, we already knew that from his relationship with Stefan, Caroline is not special to him, she’s vulnerable. Both her and Stefan are mentally unstable people who are desperate for attention and thus easiest to manipulate. 1-

2- I love fucked up characters, I think Damon is a good example of an evil character who is still interesting, likeable and complex without needing to be redeemed (although the writers obviously think otherwise), but I find Klaus very cliche, uninteresting and unsympathetic. 3-I also can get behind toxic relationships as a way to explore characters and themes and shit but Caroline and Klaus’ relationship is just him inserting himself into her business until she gives in, it makes me like him less and doesn’t tell us anything new about her, we already knew she was desperate for attention and easily to manipulate, that’s been her shtick since day one we don’t need to go over it again.

Season 1 Caroline, who was a teenager and a human, was naturally vulnerable to predators like Damon, a vampire who raped her, but seasons 3 and 4 Caroline was desperate for attention and easy to manipulate? She didn't seek Klaus out at all, and yes she was special to him. And no, she didn't "give in" to his advances. She gradually saw his worth and became a bit taken by him. Sometimes you just start liking people even if you don't want to, or didn't plan to. Damon grew on Elena like a weed but you seem to like him just fine. And Caroline's shtick from day 1 was being desperate for attention?! Did you skip all her scenes from season 1 onward?? This reeks of misogyny. Let's be honest, you just hate Caroline. Compare what you said about her to what you said about Stefan and Klaus. Also, since when are Caroline and Stefan mentally unstable to the point where they are easy to manipulate? Being mentally ill doesn't mean you have no agency and are manipulated by everyone???? Honestly. Stefan had his problems, but he wasn't manipulated by Klaus. He was compelled, and then he saw that Klaus, just like Damon, also had his qualities. Stefan saw the best in everyone. Caroline did too. Everyone was fucked up in TVD. Being a murderer wasn't a deal breaker for anyone, because they were all murderers.

i am currently reading the werewolf of paris and i just got to this chapter where aymar (basically stepfather relationship to werewolf bertrand) is looking for bertrand in wartime paris after he hears about a wolf digging up gravesites and. figures its probably well. the werewolf that he knows is in the city. and he ends up going to this rich ppl dinner and because of the war they serve gourmet versions of traditionally uneaten meats (rat, horse, mouse, cat etc) and there is a dog dish that they eat that kind of takes center stage. and after the meal hes talking to his friend who tells him he invited him to the meal bc he knows aymar is looking for the wolf that has been digging up the gravesites and that he thought of the meal as that wolf's funeral and final goodbye. meaning. the dog they ate. was the wolf. and aymar is so horrified by the prospect that he just took part in a dinner where they ATE the kid he raised that he walks away and just vomits on the street for a while. chapter so insane i had to put the book down for the day. anyway definitely have a lot to say abt this book (esp wrt the misogyny and treatment of women ofc) but holy shit the horror is soooooo.... like it's like the werewolf themes are explored from bertrand's perspective, you read about his confusion and disgust with himself and the thrill he experiences and his thoughts as he kills and eats people obvi. but also... like you see aymar (not a werewolf) do some !! pretty terrible horrific shit!! some accidental (he literally thinks he ate bertrand) and some entirely purposeful (sexual relationship with bertrand's barely teenage pregnant mother) and then he reacts with horror at bertrand's actions while also um! covering them up and even committing similar acts without even the excuse of youth or. u know. lycanthropy. book is so so . i am having so many thoughts forever. aymar's journey of becoming everything he hates in this world u are so compelling to me. lycanthropy as the monstrosity in men. aymar's inability to grasp his own monstrosity his hypocrisy in his desire to see bertrand punished.... compels me!!!
